of the news was immense, shaking us to our very core. Losing someone that young that suddenly made no sense. And to lose her just four days before Christmas seemed outright cruel. The funeral was surreal. Sitting in a church on Christmas Eve with all of the wreaths and garland and candles can be a serene experience. But, place a casket for a teenager in the midst and the mood of the sanctuary is one that is hard to describe. Imagine a huge, wet, cold blanket wrapping itself tightly around you so that you can hardly breathe. It kind of felt like that. There is something about pain that forces us to reevaluate our lives. these questions, I assure you answers will begin to flow. It is important to mention as our life changes with time, our purpose does too. If in this stage of your life you are given the great gift of becoming a parent, then your purpose is, without a doubt, to be the best care taker for your little one. It is our attitude that determines how much our actions will transcend in the people we love. Regarding how I found my true purpose in life one night, I was sitting at my dining table with my husband discussing a problem he was having with a coworker. After a couple of hours of deep conversation, I shared my point of view and offered different strategies to resolve the problem. I still remember the way he looked at me and told me: “Have you ever thought about being a life coach?” It only took this question to realize my true and real passion has always been to listen to others’ problems and help them bring out the best in themselves for the situation. Thus, since that day, that has been my purpose. As we all know, studio lights and TV cameras can be intimidating, especially if you have to speak in front of them. For this reason, I decided my purpose as a TV host will always be every interviewee who comes to my show feels comfortable and confident to speak on camera. The result of this change of attitude has been great as the interviews

started to look a lot more natural and relaxed. The best part of this change has been the reward which is to see the faces of excitement and happiness of my interviewees and hear them say, “Thank you for helping me to do this, I was so nervous that thought I could not do it.” That is the

She brings to the table leadership, organizational and communicationskills, as well as, the art of socializing in order to bring people together to support a singular cause or action. As a result, the entire community benefits. HOW TO ADAPT TO CHANGE: Broadcast journalism was rewarding but restrictive. Campos’ “new” career provides cherished freedoms: She’s able to voice her opinion, pursue her passions, and set her own work schedule. Before switching professional paths, her expert advice is to review your strengths, re-invent yourself with those in mind and don’t look back. PHILANTHROPIC SPIRIT: Not everyone can write a check, but everyone can give of themselves. Campos’ philanthropic spirit comes from serving on non-profit boards and committees. Focus on an area of interest and volunteer! Attend events! Introduce yourself! Soon YOU will be the one setting policies and budgets and making great things happen. MAKING AN IMPACT: Journalism instilled in Campos the desire to find facts and drill for details. Those two professional skills are necessary when building a leadership presence in any setting. Be informed before you speak publicly. Also, encourage others to ask questions of you. A lively, informed two-way conversation is a sure sign of success. HOW SHE CELEBRATES LIVING WELL: Physical exercise is important to living well, but so are emotional and cerebral work-outs. Traveling, reading, savoring excellent cuisine, taking in films and live performances, laughing out loud, enjoying time with loved ones (including pets), exploring the outdoors and renewing your spiritual faith are all easy and inexpensive ways to celebrate living well in the ATX.

WHO HE IS: An executive leader who builds and grows nonprofits. Smith’s entire career has been in the public sector, helping good causes become great, and sustainably growing services to benefit the community. He is a teacher, a social worker, a native Austinite, and a proud father of three daughters. APPROACH TO RESOLVING CHALLENGES WITHIN THE COMMUNITY: Smith’s leadership philosophy stems from two beliefs: bring in great people and support and empower them to succeed; and be present, visible, and accessible. Financial skills (from an MBA) coupled with social work skills (from an MSW) help give him the foundation to personally succeed and help others to flourish in social service leadership. PHILANTHROPIC SPIRIT: Smith’s role model is his grandmother, Bert Kruger Smith, who was an Austin icon in philanthropy. Her example led him to the social services. In addition to his role as Executive Director of ACGC, he serves on non-profit boards, including four years on the board of Austin Groups for the Elderly, an agency his grandmother founded. Smith says, “Issues in our community need to be addressed, and through the efforts of the many organizations of which I am affiliated, that’s what we do.” WHY FAMILY IS IMPORTANT: Supporting families is key to his work at ACGC. The Center works with children in the context of their families and communities. This is a key value Smith holds as a social worker, a father, and as a community leader. RECENT CAUSES FOR CELEBRATION: In the professional realm, Smith is proud of the growth and success of ACGC which continues to expand its ranges of services year after year. The positive feedback from the community affirms the impact ACGC is having within the communities served is much needed and valuable. In the past year, he and two colleagues have developed and taught a series of classes on non-profit leadership. From a personal perspective, Smith started cycling two years ago, and completed his first MS150 this past April.

WHO HE IS: A husband, father and nonprofit leader with a passion for sharing the experience of opera with Austin. Specter draws his strength from his family and friends and is energized by working with others to build a community around the work Austin Opera brings to the stage and beyond. WHY CELEBRATING THE ARTS IS IMPORTANT: Personal experience as a performer at a young age taught Spector about the power art has to transform lives. Opera’s unique combination of voice, orchestra, acting, dancing, sets, and lighting holds the potential to awaken the mind, imagination, and joy for people of any background or experience. GENEROUS SPIRIT: Without generosity, art cannot exist— certainly this is the case with opera. That reality extends from the artist who gives herself tirelessly every day to the perfection of her craft, to the donors who—through their deep connection with the art—make so much possible for all Austinites to enjoy. MAKING AN IMPACT:

Specter believes a spirit of

experimentation and play is critical to success, perhaps most especially in the more traditional arts. It is about embracing your art and finding creative ways to build curiosity and excitement while not sacrificing authenticity. Enjoyment is a pathway to transformative experiences, and it is to be embraced. Increasing awareness of the arts is exactly what Specter is called to do through his affiliation with Austin Opera. BIG REWARDS TO CELEBRATE: An incredible number of people bring opera to life and make sharing this art form possible. Austin’s support is allowing Austin Opera to expand over the next year, to bring American masterworks back to the stage, and to ensure that the best singers continue to perform here for Austin’s enjoyment. The rebranding of Austin Opera, and through strategic alliances with various media and supporters, Specter looks forward to enriching the community through the influences of Austin Opera. Cause for celebration for certain. 44

Initially, it was easy to slip on discipline and leadership because he was not being surrounded by the familiar “team” environment. “It was helpful to reflect on best practices learned from the camaraderie of the sports environment and incorporate these into my corporate skillset portfolio.” Even with the shift in career focus, finding and creating opportunities to give back to the community are always at the forefront.
