Trust in divine guidance to lead you to a path not yet taken, but it will be a pleasurable scenic route of self discovery and healing.

Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Gardens has been selected as the best zoo in the nation, not only is it a wonderful place to visit, the gardens are beautiful and the animals are so interesting to learn about as we observe them while they go about their day. The zoo is a great place to take your kids to teach them about each animal and learn about their habitat and the environment in which they live in.

The fascinating birds gracing our cover are listed as endangered species. The Cincinnati zoo supports the Wildlife Rescue and Conservation Association. This non-profit organization is dedicated to conserve the scarlet macaw and is the first group ever to release scarlet macaws in the wild. The birds released were bred from confiscated birds from illegal pet trades.

There are resources available to help with these fascinating birds and more of the animal kingdom, the zoo makes it possible for you by making a donation. Your donation can help even in a small way to protect endangered animals.

Each issue will be a wonderful adventure with Sage as she travels to amazing destinations. Sage will share her travels with helpful tips, interesting facts about her fun filled and relaxing get-aways!

trip. Ray and I continue our journey from Marfa, Texas into Big Bend National Park and the Ghost Town of Terlingua. Come along with us and explore the untamed vastness of the Chisos Mountans and sunbathed volcanic ridges. There’s no other place like it in Texas.

After three days in Marfa, it was time to say goodbye to this vibrant little town and prepare for our second phase of our trip. To sum up Marfa, it’s more then just a place, it’s a state of mind. It’s tough to get there, and even tougher to explain, but once you get there you, get it!

Part Two ~ Big Bend and Terlingua

Now our road trip includes Big Bend National Park, Terlingua, Boquillas de Carmen, Mexico and Marathon, Texas.

hour drive to Terlingua. as Big Bend sits just on it’s doorstep. Terlingua is Big Bend’s Ghost Town. Ray and I decided to make the town our base camp, spending our first evening in a vintage air stream and our second in a round adobe casita.

Although the town is technically a ghost town, you can find a few lively restaurants and shops mixed in with the empty buildings and abandoned cars. As soon as we rolled into town, I intuitively knew this place had magic running through its veins. First thing first was to find our Air stream named, “Josephine.” We found Retro Rents and the owner showed us to our home, Josephine, for the night.

Josephine is located in the heart of the historic ghost town. We unpacked and walked across the dirt road to have lunch at the High Sierra Bar and Grille. It was our kind of place! As we looked over the menu and ordered a couple cold Texas beers, it was obvious we were in a favorite haunt for locals. I picked up on a common story: that most everyone living in Terlingua was there to begin a new life and to leave the past behind. We struck up conversation with a local musician who moved to town years ago and become a river guide. He invited us to come return later that night to hear him and other musicians play some good country and old rock and roll. He and Ray are both Veterans and swapped stories, while I kicked back and took in the scenery.

I am obsessed with chili relleno’s and if they are on the menu in a new place I order them. We ordered the absolute best rellenos I have ever had - No joke!

The roasted Anaheim chilies were stuffed with jack cheese, coated with an egg batter and then pan-fried to perfection. They were served with green chili sauce.

This was my Zen moment! They were so good that we came back Saturday night to order them again.

After lunch, we decided to explore the ghost town.

Terlingua is the most fascinating and beautifully situated ghost town in Texas. Once a thriving mining community with some 2000 inhabitants, it was abandoned shortly after World War II. Since the 1970’s, the town has been partially restored and repopulated. A thriving colony of artists, artisans, musicians, river and mountain guides, chefs, entrepreneurs and “local

characters,” live and work together to survive the untamed mountainous desert.

The vibe, the history and the beauty of the area remains undeniable. We spent the rest of our day roaming around the ghost town, exploring the remains of houses, destroyed vehicles and the cemetery. No larger-thanlife marble angels graces the grave sites here. Instead, modest filigree crosses, in simple stonework and small grottoes with hand made embellishments, highlight this historic burial spot. This tiny site just over one acre contains marked graves from as early as 1903. It truly resembles something out of a Clint Eastwood cowboy movie!

Sunsets in Texas are unbelievable, and sunsets in Terlingua are beyond my ability to express with words. We just happened to be at the cemetery for sunset. To watch the sun set over the stunning one hundred mile view of the Chisos Mountains and the Sierra del Carmens was the Zen moment of a lifetime!

We ended our night back at the High Sierra listening to local musicians belt out great songs and we complimented with a bit of two stepping. It was a night to remember.

The next day we got up early to see the sunrise and drink a cup of coffee. We then planned our excursion into Big Bend National Park. Ray was in charge and decided we would simply get in the truck and let the road guide us to different areas of the park. The Blue Bonnets were in full bloom across the fields and we stopped for many photos. The entire Chisos Mountains are located within Big Bend, as well as a large part of the Chihauhuan Desert. One of our favorite stops was an over look along the Ross Maxwell scenic drive, where a distinctive pair of volcanic peaks, known as Mule Ears, rise from the desert floor. We made another stop where I hung out near the river and Ray went on a nice hike above the basin. I let the sun shine on my face and watched what appeared as zillions of butterflies dance above my head. At dusk we headed back to Terlingua and quickly blended in with the locals for another night of rellenos and music. To end our night, we sat outside in front of Casa Lele. roaring fire in the desert evening chill and star gazed.

Our casita was situated along the gentle slopes of Cigar Mountain. Sweet dreams were had by all.

a road trip of a lifetime, from artists and cowboys, mountains and desert, sunrises and sunsets.

Life is good!

Sunday was our last day in Big Bend. We decided to have breakfast early at a local spot the Chili Pepper. We shared the chorizo breakfast burrito and coffee. We were fueled for our trip into Mexico. To get to Boquilles, you easily follow the signs for Boquillas Canyon, about a 30-45 minute drive form the park entrance. We got to the Boquillas del Carmen crossing and went through border control and walked down a path leading to the edge of the Rio Grande River. A man in a rowboat rowed us across the border to Mexico. Once we got across to Mexico we had some choices to make: walk one mile into town or spend $5 and choose the back of a pickup ride, horse or a donkey! We picked the donkeys. We were also offered a guide. Though not required, serving as a guide is how locals can make money, and we of course agreed. Estabon was a fabulous guide. He walked next to us into town while we enjoyed the scenery on our mules. We learned a great deal about him, his family and his village. It felt priceless to learn about his culture and his every day life. Thanks to his suggestion, we lunched at Jose Falcons. There are only two restaurants around, one on the left and one on the right. Overlooking the mountains and Rio Grande, we enjoyed margaritas and fabulous homemade green chili enchiladas. After lunch, we strolled around the village, bought some trinkets from the children and shot a few games of pool at the only bar in town! Estabon hung out with us the whole time and we ended our day with a round of tequila shots toasting Mexico, Texas and the United States. The Border closed at 5pm, so we made our way to our donkeys, headed to the river, and across we went back to Texas by rowboat. It was a day to remember!

As the sun was setting behind us, we drove out of Big Bend and headed to Marathon, Texas for a good night of sleep before our trip home to Buchanan Dam the next morning.

My Zen moments: The flawless chili rellenos at HIgh Sierra and the Texas Sunset at the Ghost Town Cemetery.

On might ask “what is ascension?” The word implies moving up. For the sake of this communication I would like to define and speak about the true meaning of ascension and the means to ascend.

First my Brothers and Sisters when ascension comes to mind, we usually think of our Beloved Jeshua who according to the Bible ascended to heaven. If one ascends to heaven what does this mean? Does one live one’s life, dies and “goes up to Heaven?” There are those who believe this is the path of being saved if one has been forgiven of all their earthly sins, lived a good life and when their end has come, dies and goes to heaven.

My Brothers and Sisters there is so much more that you have forgotten. Now is the time to remember.

Time is drawing closer for all to awaken to your enlightenment. What did Beloved Jeshua learn so he could ascend? Did he not learn how to be one with his Father, the same who is our Father? Did he not see the path to everlasting peace through the sacred heart? Did he not share all his knowledge with all he ministered, his disciples and his Beloved Mary? Did he not learn and teach the truth about death? That there is no death? Ascension is state of being, being in your heart space of love and forgiveness. Being in the Father Mother God space of holiness love.

Look around you. Have you learned the process of feeling and knowing you and everyone you encounter are one? One with Father Mother God? The process of ascension is a work of acceptance and endeavorment.

Stressed Out? Get Out(side)!

Everyone has felt the impact of stress on their bodies.

Though few of us are running away from bears, our “fight or flight” sympathetic nervous systems kicks in too often in our fast-paced, 24-hour-news world.

Negative stress, especially chronic stress, can damage health. A 2015 study in the Journal of Management Science reported that work-related stress alone costs the U.S. economy over $190 billion in healthcare costs each year. (1) Stress wears down our immune systems and makes us more prone to infection, pain, and mood disorders like depression. Stress disrupts our digestive system and our sleep patterns. Stress contributes to weight gain, skin problems, and many other health woes.

the term “fight-or-flight.” Recipients of Cayce’s readings exhibited symptoms of chronic stress as well as symptoms from their attempts to combat stress through alcohol, gambling, smoking, overeating, and opioid addiction. The readings recommended healthy coping skills like improving the diet and exercising to strengthen the person’s resilience and ability to deal with stressors. Another important healing recommendation for mental stress was to get outside. Exposure to nature, “sun, sea, sand, pines or the woods” (Edgar Cayce reading 386-1,) was recommended in more than 100 readings. Edgar Cayce reading 5618-5 Though these Cayce readings about the importance of nature to counteract stress were given more than 75 years ago, human behavior hasn’t changed much – if anything, in 2019, there are even more unhealthy “coping” options. Fortunately, there is a worldwide movement to reconsider “sun, sand, water, and pines” healing too. Though too much sun exposure can lead to skin cancer and premature aging, most of us understand the importance of Vitamin D to our health. For healthy individuals, Vitamin D is best obtained from short midday exposure to sunlight.

Relaxing in the ocean or on a beach is high on many peoples’ lists of vacation choices; we don’t need to be convinced of the relaxing properties of sea and sand.

The Cayce readings’ mentions of healing pine trees and oak woods anticipated a 21st century trend. Japan has become the leader, coining the term shinrin yoku, translated as “forest bathing,” in the 1990 (2). Studies done by the Japanese government affirmed the stressreducing properties of spending time in the woods and inspired the creation of the Association of Nature and Forest Therapy, an American organization that describes itself as “a research-based framework for supporting healing and wellness through immersion in forests and other natural environments.” (3) Nature and Forest Therapy, simply spending 20-30 minutes in the woods, has been associated with a 1214% decrease in salivary cortisol, a stress hormone, a 7 percent decrease in sympathetic nerve activity, a 1.4 percent decrease in blood pressure, and a 5.8 percent decrease in heart rate. Studies on people who consistently spend time in the woods have shown a 50 percent increase in the number of some specific immune cells. (3) Scientists hypothesize that the aromatic compounds released by the trees lead to calming and healing–natural aromatherapy!

Walking Produces Beneficial Changes in Your Body

Biochemical

When you take your first few steps, your body releases chemicals that give your body a quick boost of energy.

Once you get going, your heart rate will increase, from about 70 to about 100 beats per minute. This boost in blood flow will warm up your muscles. As you move, your body will also increase production of fluid in your joints, thereby reducing stiffness.

Walking for six to 10 minutes can raise your heartbeat to about 140 beats per minute and trigger your body to start burning up to six calories per minute. While your blood pressure will rise from the exertion, this increase is counteracted by chemicals that help expand your blood vessels, such as nitric oxide. This expansion in turn allows greater amounts of oxygen-rich blood to reach your muscles and organs, including your heart and brain. Over time, taking regular walks will help lower your blood pressure if it tends to be high.

Walking for 11 to 20 minutes results in an increase in body temperature and sweating as blood vessels closer to the surface of your skin expand to release heat.

At this point, you start burning about seven calories per minute. The increase in heart rate also causes you to breathe deeper. Epinephrine (adrenaline) and glucagon also begin to rise at this point to boost muscle activity. Epinephrine helps relieve asthma and allergies, which helps explain why walking and other exercises tend to have a beneficial impact on these ailments.

At 21 to 45 minutes, you’ll start burning more fat, courtesy of a drop in insulin. This is also when you’ll start experiencing greater physical and mental relaxation as your brain starts to release “feel good” endorphins.

Walking has also been shown to boost memory and creative problem-solving,4 so taking a walk when you’re puzzling over a problem may allow you to come up with better solutions. One Stanford University study found walking increased creative output by an average of 60 percent, compared to sitting still.5

After 30 to 45 minutes, you’re really oxygenating your whole body, burning more fat, strengthening your heart and cardiovascular system, and boosting your immune function. Provided you’re walking outdoors and the weather complies, an hour of sunshine will also help boost your mood and provide a number of beneficial health effects associated with vitamin D production.

Those struggling with depression would do well to get out of the concrete jungle and into nature, as nature walks have been found to be particularly beneficial for your mood by decreasing rumination — the obsessive mulling over negative experiences.

Walking Boosts Health and Longevity Several studies have confirmed that walking boosts health and longevity. For example: • In one, walking for 20 to 25 minutes per day (140 to 175 minutes per week) was found to add anywhere from three to seven years to a person’s life span.6 • Research7 published last year found that as little as two hours (120 minutes) of walking per week may reduce mortality risk in older adults, compared to inactivity. Meeting or exceeding the activity guidelines of 2.5 hours (150 minutes) of moderate activity per week in the form of walking lowered allcause mortality by 20 percent.

• Research published in 2012 found brisk walking improved life expectancy even in those who are overweight.8 • Smokers may also increase their life span by nearly four years by engaging in physical activity9 such as walking. Former smokers who kept up their physical activity increased their life expectancy by 5.6 years on average, reducing their all-cause mortality risk by 43 percent.

Smokers who were physically active were also 55 percent more likely to quit smoking than those who remained inactive, and 43 percent less likely to relapse

once they quit. A Norwegian study10 also showed that regular exercise is as important as quitting smoking if you want to reduce your mortality risk.

About 5,700 older men were followed for about 12 years in this study, and those who got 30 minutes of exercise — even if all they did was light walking — six days a week, reduced their risk of death by about 40 percent. Getting less than one hour of light activity per week had no effect on mortality in this study, highlighting the importance of getting the “dosage” right if you want to live longer.

Other studies have shown walking can be tremendously beneficial for people struggling with chronic diseases such as obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and cardiovascular disease. As we stroll through the summer gardens, we are reminded that we are also in a state of bloom and growth. Indeed, we are The Creator’s beautiful flower cultivating our path back to God. Ascension is the goal. This is where “the knower, knowing and known exist as One (1).”

Moving into “Oneness” requires certain steps. The first is to choose to consciously live in oneness with all. This requires the understanding that love is the foundation of “oneness.” We see Mother Nature busy - all a buzz with the job of love. Love warms. Love shines. Love gives. Love provides. Love promises…

We are reminded to get busy with the job of loving.

“The spark of divine love exists in all hearts at birth,” according to Yogi Paramahansa Yogananda. We need to remember to cultivate the flame of love in our hearts.

We are provided many opportunities to let go of “the programming.” This is a healthy beginning. To move our conscious awareness from our minds into our hearts opens the door to the freedom to feel our own personal truth. We have been told that “Love is The Way and that love is the highest road that we can take. “Love” is the actual answer to every single question. Just try it. All roads circle back to love.

Part of our self discovery is to test this theory. We will discover that we are love! .

Love at its highest, stimulates joy. That’s the tickle in our belly and the bubbles of exuberance that we feel as

a result of loving and being loved. Love is our vehicle to bliss, and joy attends love. The birds sing their joyful songs, while the bees buzz with satisfaction. The animals joyfully create new life. Nature encourages us to participate in the joy as we are encouraged to sing, to be productive and to create. To be grateful for the beauty of the moment is to joyfully give “Thanks.”

Summer is the transcendence to bliss consciousness.

Bliss is the crescendo to summer’s symphony of song, to summer’s new life and to summer’s intense light.

Summer’s exhilaration is an expression of ultimate bliss. Yogananda teaches: The satisfaction of love is not in the feeling itself, but in the joy that feeling brings. Love gives joy. We love love because it gives us such intoxicating happiness.

So love is not the ultimate; the ultimate is bliss. God… ever-existing, ever-conscious, ever-new Bliss.

Bliss is the state of complete happiness. Look at the intoxicating activity in a field of flowers as the buzzing activity shows us that this is the time to feel the bliss. Adventures await as the warmth of the season invigorates and provides us with a sense of well being!

Divine goal is the nature of Bliss. Once we feel it, we must come back for more!

The colors of the season serve as motivation. Green, the foundation of warmth and abundance, combines with personality. What color are we feeling now? The pink of love? The red of passion? The calming purple of transcendence? Lavender for soft change? Yellow for inspiration? Orange of creativity? The white of purity? These gifts become a part of us as we move on in our awareness.

Musical Elements

Ancient sages devised a classification system – a set of names to describe subtle energies (tiny packets of energy or quantum energies). Likewise, today’s physicists use different names to describe elements of matter versus dark energy… each group has its own words and descriptions. Ancient masters selected descriptive names by observing their feelings at different times and places, and comparing them to things found in nature, such as water, earth, air and fire. In this way they cataloged all subtle energies.

The Hindus and the ancient Chinese both used this method, although they came up with slightly different descriptive names. The energy remains the same despite different names. The energy could be called Bob and Frank and the energy would still be the same.

Continuing with this analogy, various people perceive Bob and Frank differently and hence describe them differently. Therefore, the Hindus might call one energy ether, while the Chinese identify the same energy as air.

The impact of elemental energies can be negative or positive. For example, a good amount of fire-energy makes us exciting and dynamic. When we have too much “fire” energy we are stressed or angry. With too much “wood” or “water” energy, people label us as depressed or sad. Yet in a positive manifestation, water energy can be reassuring and kind, while wood energy carries deep strength. Balance is the key for emotional health.

Our physical bodies are comprised of all of the elements.

Likewise, we have capacity to feel ALL feelings, see all colors, and hear all notes of a musical scale. We are exposed to the entire gamut of energies. Ancient Masters identified what elements were dominant in a person by observing one’s personality, voice and disposition. Personality qualities were associated with the elements and this same energy is present in the voice. A person with a watery voice appears soothing and reassuring. A fiery voice excites people. An earthy voice appears strong, grounded and rooted. The airy voice gives an impression of someone floating in air (not grounded) and observing aerial views or perceptions.

Music was composed to represent the elements.

Listening to elemental music enables us to “feel” the elements. Music can soak us in elemental energy. We all know how music affects us. Who has not matched the beat of a lively song with a foot tap? Or calmed down to soothing music? Music softly changes us.

When the negative aspect of an elemental energy was prominent in an unhealthy person, ancient sages played music to transform him – to balance his energy, which eventually enables the body to heal. For example, when someone showed too much “fire” or anger, then music with a watery-sound balanced the person’s energy (the water put out the fire) by calming him.

Ample quantities of appropriate music must accumulate to quickly observe an effect in matter.

With prescriptive music, you can observe someone’s personality returning to a healthy state immediately.

If the music is maintained for lengthy periods, body health follows.

Experts of Indian healing music claim that medicine, at its roots, is made of different types of elements – because it is composed of ingredients made from the elements (A pill made from a plant has fire energy from the sun, water energy and earth energy from the soil.). When you describe a chemical action with the nomenclature of subtle energy processes, we see that medicine balances elemental energy.

Various energy centers in the body are associated with the elements. When all chakras are fully open, then one’s elemental energies are balanced. Once again ancient musicians devised songs, notes, rhythms and ragas to clear and reboot the chakras – to balance elemental energies.

This ancient art could be revived today – providing free or inexpensive alternative health support. Wouldn’t it be cool to just download “help” (mp3s) on a phone or computer? Even if this was only used as a preventive health technique, it could save costly dollars from medical expenses.

Below are the ancient Hindu descriptions of elemental energies: Earth – a dim and dull sound, producing the feeling of a thrill and movement. Its form is crescent shaped and its color yellow. Instruments producing a similar harmonic pattern are percussion, drums and cymbals.

Water – The sound is deep and can be heard in the roaring sea, rain, and flowing rivers. It has a smooth and lively effect. It facilitates the imagination, dreams affections and emotions. It creates a serpent like shape and its color is green.

Air – The sound wavers and is heard in storms, the wind. Its effect is sweeping and piercing. It is found in the wind instruments made of wood, brass, and bamboo. It can kindle the heart.

Fire – This high pitched sound is heard in thunder, cackling fires and a volcanic eruption. Its form is curled and its shape is red, and it can convey impressive, exciting, arousing and awakening impressions.

Ether – The sound of ether holds all forms and colors.

It is the basis of all sounds. Its instrument is the human body. It is all pervading 0- heard and unheard. It manifests as man is healthy, emotionally balanced and loving.

Quick Chicken Piccata INGREDIENTS: •1 pound organic thin sliced skinless, boneless chicken breast •1 tablespoon flour •1/2 teaspoon salt •1/4 teaspoon hot paprika •2 tablespoons olive oil

to a boil over high heat, scraping up any brown bits from bottom of pan with a wooden spatula; boil until reduced by half, about 1 minute. Stir in lemon juice and remaining butter, strain sauce over chicken, garnish.

Carmelized Shallots INGREDIENTS:

•1 large organic lemon-half thinly sliced, half juiced

•6 tablespoons (3/4 stick) unsalted organic butter

•2 tablespoons organic butter

•2 pounds fresh organic shallots, peeled, with roots intact

•1 medium organic shallot, chopped •1/3 cup organic white wine or dry vermouth •1/3 cup organic chicken broth

•3 tablespoons organic sugar •3 tablespoons good red wine vinegar •1/2 teaspoon kosher salt

DIRECTIONS

•1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

1. Some thin-sliced chicken breast has been sliced crosswise, so they look like thin rounds and strips; others look like large cutlets. If your market has the large ones, slice them on an angle into 2 or 3 pieces, so they look like veal scallops.

•2 tablespoons chopped fresh flat-leaf organic parsley

2. Trim any fat from chicken and slice if necessary as described above; arrange chicken pieces in a single layer on a large plate or a tray. In a small bowl, mix flour, salt and hot paprika. Sprinkle half of seasoned flour over chicken. Turn pieces over and dust with remaining seasoned flour.

DIRECTIONS:

3. In a large skillet, heat oil over high heat. Add lemon slices and cook 1 minute on each side; remove and set aside. Add chicken pieces to pan in a single layer and cook until golden brown outside and white inside but still juicy, 1 to 2 minutes on each side; remove to a platter.

4. Melt 1-tablespoon butter in same skillet over medium heat. Add shallot and cook until softened, about 2 minutes. Pour in wine and broth and bring

1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. 2. Melt the butter in a 12-inch ovenproof saute pan, add the shallots and sugar, and toss to coat. Cook over medium heat for 10 minutes, tossing occasionally, until the shallots start to brown. Add the vinegar, salt, and pepper and toss well.

3. Place the saute pan in the oven and roast for 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the size of the shallots, until they are tender. Season to taste, sprinkle with parsley, and serve hot.

Pleasantly Doing Nothing

Il Dolce Far Niente: is an Italian phrase for pleasantly doing nothing.

I believe that so many by products of our modern world has led to toxicity and disease in our body.

New fad diets popping up daily, a change in how we farm and crop, pesticides, modern medicine and increased use of antibiotics, ignoring medicinal traditions and herbs our ancestors used, lack of sleep, work stress, taking work into the home and most of all, the fact that the North American society likes to worship busyness. We don’t understand the concept in finding the pleasure and beauty of doing nothing, it makes us feel guilty if anything. All these things together create an unhealthy imbalance in our life.

Whether we want to admit that or not. We are no longer present and conscious in our everyday life.

Think of our life like a spider web - each web leads to different aspects and obligations we choose to devote our time too; family time, friendships, work obligations, groceries, meal prep and cooking, eating out, house maintenance, get togethers, physical activity, SLEEP (so important), taking care of our furry friends, hobbies and more. If we overload this web with too much of something or not enough down time- it creates an imbalance thus breaking the web (our body) and it all comes crashing down leading to disease, physical and emotional ailments, lack of money and resources, stress, anxiety and more. We become burnt out, spiritually broken, unconscious, fragile, distant and sick of it all.

For me I had to learn the hard way about imbalance from a tender age. Although I’m thankful I went through these trials and tribulations it has taken 20

quite some time to figure out what a good balance is for me and how to unravel from being stuck in an imbalanced body and life. I will say this, it’s trial and error and it’s different for everybody.

Unfortunately, society places a high value on the super man or wonder woman image. The idea that you can have it all, be it all and do it all. In the process of having it all or doing it all – we lose our health and vitality.

When I was younger, I thought I wanted to be a professional dancer. I spent at least 3-4 mornings per week in high school at the studio before classes. I spent every free evening as well as most of the day Saturday at the studio. Sometimes I even spent Sundays there if it was competition season. Don’t get me wrong though, I LOVED dancing, I loved being on the stage, I loved the makeup, sparkly costumes and spending time with my dance friends and I created some amazing memories however the older I got and the more I thought about the fact that I didn’t even realize what I was missing out on, the more I grew distant of it all.

I started to resent dance. And I hated feeling that way. Not to mention I was diagnosed with a thyroid condition very young and became easily burnt out. I wanted to know that I could be good at more than just dance. I wanted to try new things. Most of all I just wanted to be STILL for a second. I wanted to eat my meals at a table - not in the car on my way to dance. I wanted to hang out after school with friends, I wanted to catch my favorite TV shows, I wanted to spend some time outside. I wanted to go to bed early and not be sore all over from 6 hours of dance class the next morning. I was a high school student who wanted to “play” outside. I missed most of my youth with hours logged in the studio. I wanted to enjoy my favorite foods without guilt of gaining weight or fear of not fitting into certain costumes.

I wanted to NOT be an emotional mess all the time. I wanted to experience the simple things that every young person should.

I just wanted to be happy and carefree. I wanted to be healthy. Reality was, I was a burnt-out teenager and it all manifested through autoimmune issues.

At a young age I realized I could NOT function the way I had been living anymore and I remember the moment I quit - it was a shock to my parents and dance family - and quite understandable that it upset the people who meant the most to me but I remember in that moment despite all the hurt I had caused others I felt like a free bird. And I decided at the young age of 16 to never get so busy again. To never say yes to things that I no longer wanted to do or participate in.

People these days don’t really get my philosophy on this topic; to this day I still strive to live my life in this way, but then again they didn’t live my life and they have not walked in my footsteps. I think some might see it as lazy, I’ve also heard people suggest that I’m not motivated to achieve things in my life (bigger house, better job, more “stuff”)...but I don’t feel that way at all. I am steadfast in not allowing anything to create that imbalance that I felt back then into my life. I can feel my anxiety and stress creep up when things get too busy and too hectic in my life. And I will shut it down quite quickly. I know sometimes we go through hectic periods in life which can be unavoidable but overall I feel like we can control our environment and what we agree to participate in.

North American Society has us glorifying busy so much so that we don’t even know why we are busy. We aren’t even being productive! And make no mistake busyness is not productivity. People act

like it’s cool...like it’s a “thing” to keep busy. And why do we do it? To mask the real issues we might be facing in our lives? Perhaps there is always a root cause to our madness. Are we afraid to be alone with our thoughts? Afraid to disconnect?

Afraid to be kicked out of our social circles?

Afraid to be the black sheep? Afraid to realize how toxic our busy bodies have become? We are afraid to be still, afraid to feel our feelings, afraid to acknowledge our emotions, afraid to observe what is happening around us and we just continue to fill the void. Most of the time doing nothing can lead to immense happiness and inner break throughs. We just must be ok with being still for awhile. It goes against “the norm” which can be difficult for us. We are hardwired to always have something in our hands or always being on the go.

A few years ago, when the book and movie Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert was released I resonated with it so deeply and took the catch phrase from that movie which I found perfectly summed up my philosophy on life...

“Il Dolce Far Niente” Italian for...the sweetness of doing nothing.

Now, I’m not saying you need to take a trip to Italy, India and Bali like the character in this movie to find yourself and realize what sort of balance you must create in your life to really appreciate it or to figure out what’s important to you. But have you ever just taken a moment to sit and really think about it? Are all the things you try to cram into your day or feel necessary to say “yes” to really necessary? Do they improve your well being? Do they help you sleep at night?

I’m going to guess - NO. Mostly not. When you feel busy is it stroking your ego? Probably, yes.

I had to get to the point of breakdown, physical and mental exhaustion to realize what a mess “busy” had created in my young life. My break down looked like thyroid disorder, adrenal fatigue and candida issues. This is what manifested in my body. I wouldn’t wish that on anyone else and it is easily avoidable.

I truly believe that living your best life is an art form. People in certain European countries like France and Italy have it down to a fine art. In these areas it is almost mandatory to take a twohour lunch and dinner, to savour each moment and regain that balance that might have been lost through work or other obligations. It’s going back to the basics, the way our grandparents lived. Sitting out on the porch watching your kids play...or in my case my fur baby. Feeding the birds. Admiring the flowers that have popped up over night. Being able to say no to unnecessary obligations and events without explanation.

Cooking a meal for yourself using the best ingredients (not from a box) and sitting at a table to slowly eat it, alone with your thoughts. Reading the newspaper, walking to the library, checking out some books and getting lost in another world.

It’s being able to unwind from the hectic life that we have created for ourselves. It’s about carving out downtime and making the most of it. Our body, mind and spirit deserve and demand it.

Ban the B Word – Boredom: How to Get Children to Turn Off Screens & Tune into Summer Fun

by Jody Johnston Pawel, LSW, CFLE Do you remember summers as a child? What did you do? Did you spend several hours each day outside, running around, riding bikes, or hanging out with friends? Did you ever read a book under a shade tree and fall asleep for a nap in the breeze?

Do you remember summers as a time of freedom, free play, relaxation, exploration, adventure and discovery?

“Those were the days,” right? You have such great summer memories that you want your children to have that kind of summer experience, too.

Instead, from the first day of summer and all day long your children just want to lay around playing video games or be attached somehow to their electronic devices. You are just as tired of hearing yourself nag them to go out and play as they are!

If you are concerned about how your children spend their free time, you have good reason! A recent UK study found that most children spend half as much time playing outside as their parents did. The average is only 4 to 7 minutes a day!

According to a 2015 study, children ages 8 to 12 years spend an average of 4 hours, 36 minutes looking at screens and in 2017 children ages 0 to 8 spent an average of 2 hours 19 minutes looking at screens.

It doesn’t take rocket science to figure out such a sedentary lifestyle and passive mental activity isn’t good for children who are still growing and developing mentally, physically and socially.

Studies show direct connections to childhood obesity, sleep disorders, eye problems, headaches, delays in brain and social development, lack of coordination, attention disorders, learning delays and disorders, and behavior problems such as being atypically aggressive, rude, and impatient.

So how can you to get those children off their duffs and outside, without nagging them all day?

You probably already have rules about screen time, but get complaints, hear whining about being “bored.”

It’s helpful to plan a few day trips or outings throughout the summer, which don’t have to cost a lot of money. Memberships at pools, museums, or similar places often payoff in long-term savings and break up the monotony of always doing the same thing.

Beyond these, however, you want to avoid accepting responsibility for entertaining your children all day. It prevents them from learning to entertain themselves and solve problems independently. It’s your job, as the parent, to teach your children how to entertain themselves.

After that, it is up to your children to keep themselves busy.

So before setting rules about screen time, support your children in figuring out what they can do to stay busy in productive, age-appropriate ways.

Sit together with paper and pen and do some brainstorming. List all the activities the child can do independently. List both indoor and outdoor activities, active and sedentary (arts & crafts). Get whatever supplies are needed; you can get a few each paycheck to spread out having new things all summer. Then post the list on the fridge. Whenever you hear the “B” word, “I’m Bored,” refer them to their list.

Once the child has the ideas and means for selfentertainment, you are ready to set rules about your children’s use of electronic entertainment.

Since electronic devices are a privilege, not a right, they need to be connected to responsibilities that need met to earn or keep the privilege.

That means you want to have three key parts to your screen-time rules: The child’s responsibilities, the parent’s responsibilities, and some choice or control for the child. For example, here’s what an effective screen-time rule might look and sound like:

Healthy, so I need to limit screen-time (two hours maximum is recommended) because it isn’t good for you and insist you do some kind of physical activity each day.

Using age-appropriate games and platforms (Snapchat, Facebook, etc.) that I have reviewed and approved.

Safe, by seeing what you are doing and who you are doing it with anytime I want, to provide supervision and protection from cyber bullies, stalkers, and predators. So there are no screens allowed in bedrooms or the car.

Developing properly, including learning how to interact with real people in the real world, so there are no digital devices during family fun, meals, or conversations.

You (the child) can play on electronic devices, choosing which device you are on and what you do on it, after you do two things: 1. Take care of your responsibilities, like doing homework, cleaning your room, done a chore, etc. (This is the classic, “Work before Play!” rule.)

If your homework involves being on the computer or a screen, then the total time per day can’t exceed three hours.

You don’t have to complete all your work tasks before you can turn on a screen, just one. Then you can rotate work and play as you choose, as

If you don’t budget your time well and complete your daily responsibilities, then you may need to complete them all before getting screen-time.

Once you’ve covered those three bases, you can “Ban the B word --- Boredom” If they complain, you can reply, “It’s up to you to keep yourself busy and productive. What are your options?” Best of all, your children will know what they can do and how.

No one finds the true meaning of Joy or Life in an electronic box. It’s inside our heads (imagination, creativity, thinking) and out “there” in the world (involvement with people and causes).

So encourage your children to disconnect from electronics and connect to Life in ways that will be fun for them and allow for some freedom and choice.

In this article, I would like to share with you a unique and rare experience in partnership and healing.

Equine assisted therapy is a rapidly growing field in which horses help human heal. There have been therapeutic riding programs in existence for some time, of course, and these programs have helped many children and adults improve their confidence, coordination, and mobility. Equine assisted therapy focuses on allowing the horse to interact with a person in a variety of ways ranging from humans engaging with horses to do simple tasks to simply being with the horse. In these situations, the horses are free to interact or not with the humans, and their gift is exactly that – they mirror back what they are receiving from the human they are with. Horses are the most sensitive domestic animal in the United States. Because they are prey animals, they are astute at reading body language and sensing emotions in human beings almost immediately. In addition, energetically they have large energy fields; when a human enters that field, the horse instinctively reacts to the human on an energetic level. In essence, the horse mirrors the emotional and energetic presence of the human they are with.

I had the rare privilege of spending some time with Melanie Wiechel and her horse Jasmine. Melanie is a licensed social worker and has over 10 years of experience working with people of all ages and abilities. She is also a life coach, psychic-medium, animal communicator, as well as an energetic healer.

Melanie’s primary focus currently is her life coaching and workshops. In Melanie’s life coaching practice, she sees clients in person and virtually. Melanie offers transformational workshops, spiritual development courses, one on one mentorship, and hosts An Evening with Spirit where she delivers messages of healing from our loved ones and angels to groups of 10 or more people. Jasmine entered her life 10 years ago as a 2 year old horse, who had been living in a less than ideal situation. She grew into a lovely bay mare, with a shining coat and a love of taking trail rides with Melanie as a way of enjoying time together. As they grew together and developed their relationship, Melanie quickly realized that Jasmine was very astute

to identify physical and emotional blockages. Both Melanie and Jasmine found assisting others to be rewarding and begun to work together as a team with adults, children, and families specializing in releasing trauma. I asked Melanie and Jasmine to tell me about what they did. They decided to show me, so I could experience it myself.

Melanie and I stood in Jasmine’s stall together with her. Melanie connected with me energetically, and then asked Jasmine to connect with me. Jasmine stood next to me, and her head extended up and over mine. I was able to lay my hand on her neck, and felt her body tighten. Jasmine showed me how she was connecting with me – I saw a beautiful ribbon of light come from her heart to mine; the ribbon extended out and surrounded me with its beautiful golden light. I felt like I was being grounded to the earth and connected to the Divine all at the same time. Melanie continued to hold space and facilitate the healing process, talking to me quietly. I then saw my body surrounded by iron bands that constricted me. The bands began to loosen and fall away one by one. Jasmine then shifted her feet and stepped away from me. She was done working with me. Melanie explained some things that she had seen while they were working with me, and she was spot on. I felt much lighter and freer after the experience, it was truly amazing and uplifting.

Melanie and I talked afterwards while Jasmine was having her dinner. She explained more about the process I had just experienced, and we discussed what she felt Jasmine did during a session. Once Jasmine was done with her dinner, I asked them both to share what they liked most about doing this work. Jasmine said she loved the connection and helping, and Melanie said that they most rewarding thing for her is to see the progression of people walking into a session feeling weighed down leave standing a little taller, feeling lighter, and they walk away with a new sense of direction or purpose. I asked what the most difficult thing was about their work. Melanie said that for her, it was creating a safe space for people that are not able or ready to release something and holding that space until they are ready for the next step. Jasmine shared that sometimes she had to energetically take the person

down to the core of Mother Earth to help them feel safe and grounded and that it was hard when she had to do that.

I was honored to have had the opportunity to spend time with this healing team. They do amazing and powerful work for those who need help. They are a wonderful example of how humans and animals can partner together to help others.
