Wiener Schnitzel

The Delicious Breaded Cutlet that Made Vienna Famous

W

The capital of Austria, Vienna, is known worldwide for its rich cultural heritage, including opera and the famous Sacher Torte. However, beyond these icons, one of the most emblematic and beloved dishes of the country is the Wiener Schnitzel, a delicious breaded and fried cutlet that has won over taste buds around the world

iener Schnitzel is a true culinary gem of Austria. While Vienna is famous for its opera and pastry, this dish deserves its place on the list of the city’s gastronomic treasures. At the heart of this culinary delight is a thin slice of meat, traditionally veal, although nowadays variations using pork, turkey, or chicken can be found. The history of Wiener Schnitzel dates back to bygone times, although we cannot claim that it was born in Vienna, as some legends suggest. However, what we can state with certainty is that the name “Wiener Schnitzel” first appeared in a cookbook in 1831, in Katharina Prato’s book “Die süddeutsche Küche,” which translates to “Southern German Cuisine.” Since then, this exquisite dish has been loved by generations of food enthusiasts worldwide. The preparation of Wiener Schnitzel is a meticulous process that begins with the selection of a good cut of white veal. The cutlet is lightly pounded, flattened to approximately five millimeters in thickness, although some prefer it a bit thicker. The classic recipe involves seasoning the cutlet with salt and black pepper, followed by a breading process that includes dipping the cutlet in milk, then in flour, beaten egg, and finally, breadcrumbs. The result is a tender and juicy meat, wrapped in a crispy golden coating that is simply irresistible. It is a dish that has found its place in many kitchens around the world, with variations like cotoletta alla milanese in Italy, milanesa in Argentina, or even breaded chicken versions in the United States and Korea.

In Spain, although it is not a native recipe, food lovers have adopted similar dishes, such as Asturian cachopos and libritos, which are popular throughout the country. Additionally, there is a tradition of bringing breaded chicken on outings and picnics, a delight that seems to taste even better when enjoyed in the great outdoors. A distinctive aspect of the Austrian tradition is frying Wiener Schnitzel in abundant butter or pork lard. This is because in the past, oil was a precious and scarce resource in the region. The result is a dish that combines the tenderness of the meat with the richness of butter or pork lard. To accompany this delicious dish, the options for side dishes are diverse. From fresh salads like potato salad or a mix of lamb’s lettuce and arugula, to roasted or fried potatoes, which always pair wonderfully with Wiener Schnitzel. As for sauces, Austrian tradition dictates that this dish be served without additional sauces, allowing the flavor of the meat and the crispy breading to shine. Wiener Schnitzel is much more than a simple breaded cutlet; it is a symbol of Vienna’s culinary heritage and a reminder of the richness of Austrian gastronomic culture. Over the years, this dish has traveled the world and captured the hearts of those who have tasted it, becoming a classic that continues to endure today. In Vienna, the passion for Wiener Schnitzel is palpable, with competitions dedicated to this dish and an infinite variety of ways to prepare it. From those who prefer to marinate or macerate the cutlet to those who serve it with parsley and a slice of lemon, each variation is a culinary masterpiece in itself.

The Sinister Beauty of the Unknown: A Review of “The Witch” “The Witch” (2015) by Robert Eggers is a masterpiece of modern horror. Set in 17th-century New England, it explores fear of the unknown, religious paranoia, and delivers outstanding performances. Its eerie atmosphere and religious symbolism set it apart in the genre

T

he horror genre has constantly evolved over the years, exploring themes ranging from the supernatural to the psychological. In 2015, filmmaker Robert Eggers delivered a movie that redefined the genre, a masterpiece that delves into the darkness of the past to present us with “The Witch.” This film, set in 17th-century New England, expertly combines historical elements and folklore with supernatural horror, creating an unforgettable cinematic experience. Throughout this article, we will delve deep into the highlights of “The Witch,” from its plot to its impact on the audience, and analyze how Eggers managed to reinvent horror cinema with this modern masterpiece. To fully understand “The Witch,” it is essential to immerse oneself in the historical context in which the film unfolds. The story is set in 1630 New England, a time of intense religiosity and fear of the unknown. Religious tensions and witch hunts were at their peak, and this atmosphere of paranoia and uncertainty serves as the perfect backdrop for the film’s plot. The film revolves around the family of Thomasin, who are expelled from their religious community due to theological differences. This initial event sets the premise of isolation and despair that permeates the entire film. The family settles on an isolated farm in the midst of a dense forest, where they soon begin to experience a series of strange and disturbing events. One of the central themes of “The Witch” is the fear of the unknown. The family, isolated from society and surrounded by a dense forest hiding dark secrets, becomes an easy prey for fear and superstition. Tension mounts as the characters begin to accuse one of the daughters, Thomasin, of being a witch.

CINEMA

Anya Taylor-Joy brilliantly portrays the role of Thomasin, a young woman trapped amidst her family’s growing paranoia. Taylor-Joy’s performance is stunning, as she effectively conveys her character’s fear, confusion, and distress. Thomasin is a complex protagonist struggling to find her place in a world that rejects and accuses her. One of the strengths of “The Witch” lies in its portrayal of the witch. Eggers opts to depart from the stereotypical image of the green-skinned witch with warts on her nose and instead presents a more realistic and sinister figure. The witch in the film is an enigmatic and terrifying being that represents the unknown and the incomprehensible. Her presence is constantly felt throughout the film but is rarely fully shown, adding to the constant sense of threat. Religious symbolism is a crucial aspect of “The Witch.” The film explores themes of sin, redemption, and the struggle against evil. Religion is intrinsically linked to the paranoia

consuming Thomasin’s family, and their fanatical beliefs lead them to suspect everyone around them. This exploration of faith and superstition adds an additional layer of complexity to the plot. The setting and cinematography of “The Witch” are breathtaking. Eggers and his production team accurately recreated 17th-century New England using historically precise techniques and tools. The result is a film that effectively transports you to that period in history. The choice of natural lighting and the use of close-ups contribute to the feeling of claustrophobia and oppression that permeates the entire film. The soundtrack of “The Witch” deserves special mention. Composed by Mark Korven, the film’s music is unsettling and haunting. String sounds and choirs significantly contribute to the atmosphere of tension and horror. The soundtrack is effectively used to create a sense of unease that persists throughout the film.

THE WITCH IN THE FILM IS AN ENIGMATIC AND TERRIFYING BEING THAT REPRESENTS THE UNKNOWN AND THE INCOMPREHENSIBLE” “The Witch” is not a conventional horror film. Its focus on atmosphere and character development over cheap scares and flashy effects sets it apart from many other films in the genre. Some viewers may find it slow or puzzling, but those who appreciate a deep narrative and careful suspense-building will find much to admire. Robert Eggers’ “The Witch” is a modern horror film masterpiece that stands out for its oppressive atmosphere, outstanding performances, and its focus on the fear of the unknown. The film is a perfect example of how the horror genre can be a powerful tool to explore deeper and darker aspects of human psychology. With its historically accurate setting and its focus on religious paranoia, “The Witch” stands as a film that challenges expectations and will redefine how we view horror cinema in the future. If you have the courage to confront the unknown, “The Witch” is a cinematic experience you won’t want to miss. Exploring the World of Fitness Supplements 32 • OCTOBER/NOVEMBER • 2023

BY SHENNAI LAROUX WWW.SHENNAILAROUX.COM • @SHENNAILAROUX

m

aintaining a healthy and active lifestyle has become a priority for many individuals. Alongside a balanced diet and regular exercise, some people turn to fitness supplements to enhance their performance and achieve their fitness goals. These supplements, available in various forms such as powders, pills, and liquids, claim to provide an array of benefits including increased energy, muscle growth, and improved recovery.

SUPPLEMENTS: 1 PROTEIN One of the most popular types of fitness supplements, protein powders offer an easy way to increase protein intake, which is essential for muscle repair and growth. Whey, casein, and plant-based protein powders are commonly used options.

2 CREATINE: Known for its potential to enhance strength and muscle mass, creatine is a naturally occurring compound that aids in the production of energy during high-intensity activities. It’s often used by athletes and bodybuilders.

3 BCAAS: Branched-Chain Amino Acids (BCAAs) include leucine, isoleucine, and valine. These are believed to aid in muscle recovery and reduce muscle soreness after intense workouts.

SUPPLEMENTS: 4 PRE-WORKOUT These supplements usually contain a combination of ingredients like caffeine, beta-alanine, and nitric oxide boosters. They’re designed to provide a surge of energy, increased focus, and improved blood flow during workouts.

RECOVERY: 5 POST-WORKOUT Supplements with a mix of carbohydrates and protein are marketed to aid in muscle recovery and replenish glycogen stores after exercise.

Fitness supplements, like protein powders, creatine, BCAAs, preworkout, and postworkout supplements, aim to boost energy, muscle growth, and recovery. While beneficial, they shouldn’t replace a balanced diet and exercise. Consultation with a healthcare professional is crucial before starting any new supplement regimen, especially for those with health conditions or on medication

AND MINERALS: 6 VITAMINS Some fitness enthusiasts take supplements to ensure they’re meeting their vitamin and mineral requirements. However, it’s generally recommended to get these nutrients from whole foods. It’s important to approach fitness supplements with caution. While many can offer benefits, they are not a substitute for a well-rounded diet. Consulting with a healthcare professional before starting any new supplement regimen is advised, especially for individuals with preexisting health conditions or those taking medications. Ultimately, fitness supplements can be a tool to support an active lifestyle, but they should be used in conjunction with a balanced diet and a well-structured exercise routine. Remember that no supplement can replace consistent effort and dedication when it comes to achieving fitness goals.

n recent years, the ketogenic diet has gained popularity as an effective strategy for weight loss and improved health. This nutritional approach is based on minimizing carbohydrate consumption and increasing the intake of healthy fats, which leads the body to a metabolic state known as ketosis. In this article, we’ll explore the different ways to implement the ketogenic diet, its physiological and metabolic benefits, as well as some important considerations. As we said earlier, the ketogenic diet is a low-carb, high-healthy fat eating plan. The main goal is to induce ketosis, a state in which the body burns mostly fats as an energy source instead of carbohydrates. To achieve this, it is necessary to limit carbohydrate intake to around 20-50 grams per day, forcing the body to use fat stores as fuel.

44 • OCTOBER/NOVEMBER • 2023

There are several ways to follow the ketogenic diet, each with its own particularities. Some of the most common are: Standard ketogenic diet (DCE): It is the most traditional form of the ketogenic diet, where carbohydrate intake is strictly limited while increasing intake of healthy fats. The typical macronutrient ratio is about 70-75% fat, 20-25% protein, and 5-10% carbohydrates. Cyclical ketogenic diet (CCD): This variant involves interspersed periods of higher carbohydrate consumption, such as one day a week or longer cycles of several days. These “recharge” periods help replenish glycogen levels and can be beneficial for those engaged in intense or endurance exercise. Targeted ketogenic diet (DCD): This option involves consuming a small amount of carbohydrates before or after physical exercise to provide an extra energy boost. This can be useful for those who carry out intense workouts and need a performance boost.

PHYSIOLOGICAL AND METABOLIC BENEFITS:

Weight loss: The ketogenic diet is known for its effect on weight loss. By reducing carbohydrates, blood sugar levels stabilize and insulin production is reduced, which promotes the burning of stored fat as an energy source.

Improved insulin resistance: The ketogenic diet can increase insulin sensitivity and improve blood sugar regulation. This may be beneficial for people with insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, or type 2 diabetes. Increased satiety: Meals rich in healthy fats and quality protein tend to provide a prolonged feeling of satiety, which can help control appetite and reduce excessive food consumption. Lipid profile improvement: Although it is a high-fat diet, the ketogenic diet can lead to an improvement in lipid profile by increasing high-density lipoprotein (HDL) levels and reducing triglyceride levels. Cognitive benefits: It has been suggested that ketosis may have positive effects on brain function and cognitive performance. Some early research indicates that the ketogenic diet may be beneficial for people with neurological diseases such as epilepsy and Alzheimer’s. Although the ketogenic diet can be beneficial for many people, there are some important contraindications and considerations to keep in mind: People with severe liver or kidney disease should avoid the ketogenic diet or follow it under the supervision of a healthcare professional. Likewise, pregnant or breastfeeding women should be cautious and seek medical guidance before adopting the ketogenic diet.

HEALTH AND NUTRITION

At the start of the ketogenic diet, some people may experience temporary side effects, known as “ketogenic flu.” These include fatigue, dizziness, nausea, and changes in energy levels. These symptoms usually disappear within a few days as the body adapts to using fats as an energy source.

SOCIAL LIFE AND KETO DIET

This diet can present some challenges when it comes to maintaining it long-term, especially in social situations where food and interactions may revolve around foods that are not compatible with this way of eating. However, with proper planning and some clever tricks, it is possible to enjoy a full social life while following the KETO diet. Below, I’ll elaborate on why it can be difficult to maintain long-term and share some practical tips for overcoming challenges and staying on the path to success. ■ DIETARY RESTRICTIONS: The KETO diet requires avoiding or significantly limiting carbohydrate-rich foods such as bread, pasta, rice, sugar, and processed foods. These foods are usually common in many meals and social celebrations, which can make it difficult to adhere to the diet. ■ SOCIAL PRESSURE: At social events, you may encounter

comments or criticism about your choice to follow a ketogenic diet. Pressure from others to try certain foods can be challenging and tempting. ■ LIMITED RESTAURANT OPTIONS: Some restaurants may not offer many ketogenic diet-friendly options on their menus, which can make it difficult to find a suitable option when eating out.

TRICKS TO FOLLOW THE DIET WITHOUT PROBLEMS IN SOCIAL LIFE:

■ PLANNING AHEAD: Before attending a social event or dining out, find out what food options will be available and plan ahead. If necessary, consider bringing your own ketogenic foods or snacks to make sure you have adequate options. ■COMMUNICATE YOUR NEEDS: It’s always helpful to communicate your dietary needs ahead of time to hosts or restaurants. This will allow them to prepare options compatible with the ketogenic diet or adapt existing dishes as needed. ■ EMPHASIZE PROTEIN AND FAT: At social events where food options are limited, look for dishes with a good amount of protein and healthy fats, such as meats, fish, avocados, olive oil, nuts and seeds. These foods will help keep you satiated and in ketosis.

THIS NUTRITIONAL APPROACH IS BASED ON MINIMIZING CARBOHYDRATE CONSUMPTION AND INCREASING THE INTAKE OF HEALTHY FATS, WHICH LEADS THE BODY TO A METABOLIC STATE KNOWN AS KETOSIS”

■ MAKE SMART MODIFICATIONS: If you find yourself in a restaurant where dishes contain non-ketogenic ingredients, don’t hesitate to make modifications. For example, order a hamburger without bread or a salad without sugary dressing. Most places will be willing to adapt to your needs. ■ FOCUS ON COMPANY AND NOT JUST FOOD: Remember that social interactions aren’t just about food. Enjoy the company of your loved ones and participate in conversations and activities instead of focusing exclusively on the food available. ■ EXPERIMENT WITH KETOGENIC RECIPES: If you’re worried about not finding suitable options at social events, learn how to prepare your own delicious ketogenic recipes and share them with your friends and family. Not only will this help you stick to the diet, but it will also show them how tasty and versatile it can be. Although it can be challenging to maintain the ketogenic diet in social situations, it is not impossible. Remember that every choice you make brings you closer to your health and wellness goals, and it’s always helpful to have the support of family and friends to keep you motivated on your path to ketogenic success. It is important to remember that each person is unique and may respond differently to this diet. It is always advisable to seek the advice of a health professional before making significant changes in diet. To learn more you can request your previous assessment appointment in @ totalhealthylife. Born on July 22, 1932, in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, Oscar de la Renta was the youngest of seven siblings. His multicultural heritage, with a Dominican mother and Puerto Rican father, introduced him to a world filled with cultural influences and richness. His mother’s side of the family was prominent in Dominican society, filled with artists, diplomats, and merchants, while his father’s lineage traced back to renowned Puerto Rican politicians. At an early age, Óscar showed an interest in the arts and began exploring painting.

Oscar’s life took a decisive turn when, at the age of 18 and following his mother’s death, he moved to Spain to study painting at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando in Madrid. While studying, Oscar began earning a living by creating fashion illustrations for newspapers and small fashion brands. It was his talent as an illustrator that caught the attention of Francesca Lodge, an Italian actress and dancer, and the wife of the American ambassador in Madrid, John Davis Lodge. Impressed by Oscar’s illustrations, she commissioned him to design a dress for her daughter. When that dress appeared on the cover of LIFE magazine, Oscar gained the interest of fashion buyers and became even more deeply involved in the industry. Oscar de la Renta continued to follow his passion and became an apprentice to the renowned Spanish designer Cristóbal Balenciaga. This period of learning under Balenciaga marked the beginning of a meteoric career in the fashion world. During that time, he also worked as an assistant to Antonio del Castillo at the Lanvin fashion house. His European experience and apprenticeship under these masters of European fashion laid the foundation for his future greatness. In the early 1960s, Oscar decided to move to New York, a city that would become his home and the epicenter of his career. It was the influential Vogue editor, Diana Vreeland, who advised him to work for Elizabeth Arden due to the reputation it would bring him. Diana believed that working for anyone else at that time would keep him in the shadow of the iconic Christian Dior. In 1965, Oscar de la Renta founded his eponymous fashion house in New York. His designs, marked by his love for color and the influence of his Caribbean and Spanish heritage, quickly captivated New York society. Vibrant colors, bold patterns, and the unique fusion of cultural elements in his creations set his brand apart in an unparalleled way. Oscar de la Renta played a pivotal role in shaping the identity of American fashion. His designs became a go-to choice for influential women and public figures of the time. He not only dressed celebrities but also changed the image of American First Ladies. Nancy Reagan, Hillary Clinton, Laura Bush, and Jacqueline Kennedy were some of the powerful women who wore his creations, cementing his status as a top-tier fashion designer. The success of Oscar de la Renta’s brand was reflected in its steady growth. In 1977, he launched his first fragrance, OSCAR, which remains one of the brand’s most iconic fragrances. Expansion continued with the introduction of an accessories line in 2001 and a home goods line in 2002. Additionally, in 2004, he introduced the “O Oscar” line, designed to cater to a diverse

audience and bring a high-fashion approach to a wider audience. Throughout his career, Oscar de la Renta maintained his commitment to the Latino community, supporting noble causes and charitable organizations. In 1982, he founded “La Casa del Niño,” a shelter for needy Dominican children, and built a school in Punta Cana. He also played a significant role in cultural management in both the Dominican Republic and New York. He was part of renowned cultural committees and served as president of the CFDA (Council of Fashion Designers of America) in two terms, leaving a lasting mark on the fashion industry. Today, the Oscar de la Renta brand continues to thrive under the creative direction of Fernando García and Laura Kim. They keep the essence of the Dominican designer alive, reviving iconic styles such as nautical collars, caftans, and embroidery while experimenting with a new, fluid, and comfortable tailoring for contemporary women. The brand’s designs continue to celebrate Latin sensuality and combine old-world techniques with modern attributes. Over the years, the Oscar de la Renta brand has been characterized by its timeless and classic silhouettes, influenced by his love for color, Caribbean inspiration, and exquisite detailing. Oscar de la Renta dresses stand out for the elegance of their silhouettes, prominent bows, artfully placed ruffles, and pleats. His focus on details and bold exploration of materials such as leather and various fabrics has brought his designs into modernity. In 2006, Oscar de la Renta launched his bridal dress line, creating a range of dresses that have adorned celebrities like Amal Clooney, Allison Williams, Amanda Hearst, and Kate Bosworth. In addition to his success in bridal fashion, Oscar also left a mark on the fragrance industry. His first fragrance, OSCAR, launched in 1977, is still a beloved and distinctive fragrance for many. Furthermore, fragrances like Bella Essence and Bella Rossa continue to draw inspiration from Oscar’s garden in New York. In summary, Oscar de la Renta was the Dominican designer who contributed significantly to the creation of the identity of American fashion. His ability to combine the refinement of European design with American versatility made him an influential figure. His legacy endures through the brand that bears his name, which remains synonymous with elegance, sophistication, and timeless beauty. Oscar de la Renta was, and continues to be, an icon in the fashion industry, and his influence will endure for generations to come.

To fully grasp the essence of Cabo San Lucas, it’s essential to understand its rich history. The region now known as Cabo San Lucas has been inhabited by various cultures over the centuries. Before the arrival of Europeans, indigenous tribes like the Pericúes populated this arid and rugged land. The arrival of the Spanish in the 16th century marked a significant change in the region’s history. The conquest brought with it the construction of missions, such as the Mission of San Lucas, founded in 1730 and still standing, albeit in ruins. These missions were important landmarks for the colonization of Baja California. During the 18th century, Cabo San Lucas became a refuge for pirates, who took advantage of its strategic location and sheltered bays to hide and plunder ships passing through the region. This turbulent period in Cabo’s history has been immortalized in stories and legends that are still told today. However, as time progressed, Cabo San Lucas transformed into a quiet fishing village, where the primary means of livelihood were fishing and pearl collecting. In the 20th century, the construction of roads and airports opened the doors to tourism, and the town began to attract visitors from all over the world. Today, Cabo San Lucas’s legacy as a meeting place for cultures and historical events is reflected in its architecture, museums, and local festivities.
