Cleaning Tips from professional cleaners
Paid cleaning help can be a wonderful short-cut to a clean and organized home--if the household budget can stand the cost. But what do you do if the Prize Patrol bypassed your door this year? Take a speed-cleaning lesson from the pros! Paid cleaning services are masters of the art of speedy, efficient cleaning. Watch professional cleaners at work: they don't waste time, cut corners or dawdle over the job--and they know how to clean fast, clean right. To speed cleaning chores in your organized home, take a tip from their copybook. Try these tips from professional cleaners.
Schedule Cleaning as A Job
Professional cleaners schedule every job, right down to the minute. Nobody hires a cleaning service that promises to arrive "some Saturday when nothing else is happening." Take a tip from the pros, and set up a regular weekly cleaning schedule. There's nothing like the feeling of a completely clean home but you won't get it by cleaning in fits and starts! The pros don't quit until the job is done, and neither should you. Schedule the job and stick to it to get the work done in record time.
Dress for Success
Professional cleaners dress for the job in comfortable, washable clothing designed for work. Check out their supportive shoes and kneepads. Goggles and gloves protect against chemicals, while a cleaning apron keeps tools and supplies at their fingertips. Clean catch-as-catch can and clothing tends to catch it! End the era of bleach-stained sweatshirts and dripping nightgowns. Set aside a "cleaning uniform", and wear it, right down to shoes, gloves and eye protection.
Invest In Proper Tools
Professional cleaners don't use gadgets. You'll never find them toting specialized, one-use tools, or gee-whiz gimcracks hawked on some television infomercial. Forget flimsy supermarket cheapies, and invest in sturdy, well-made cleaning tools. Replace the rackety sponge mop with a terry-covered Magic Mop or Sh-mop for easy, efficient floor cleaning. White terry cleaning cloths (find them in the auto parts section as "detailing towels") are durable enough to stand up to walls, counters and floors, and are easy to launder in hot water and bleach.
Pick It Up
Bambi Marshall
Randy North
Professional cleaners come to clean: counters, furniture,
appliances and floors. They can't do the job if each horizontal surface in the home is covered with papers, toys, dirty dishes and just plain clutter. Pretend that you've hired a high-priced cleaning crew. You wouldn't make them sweep the clutter to one side to do their job! Give yourself the same head start you give professional cleaners: pick up before you clean. Without the distraction caused by out-of-place items, cleaning chores will fly.
Tote Your Tools
Watch an average home manager clean the bathroom. Ooops! Forgot the powdered cleanser, so down the stairs you go. The toilet brush? It's in the kids' bathroom down the hall. Run to the laundry room for more cleaning towels, to the kitchen for a box of tissues. Where's the vacuum? Did the teenager take the squeegee to wash the car? Professional cleaners tote their tools with them--all their tools. Look in the cleaner's tote tray: all tools, cleansers, brushes and rags needed to finish the job are right there. Vacuum, mop and mini-vac wait in the doorway. A plastic bag for trash is tucked into a pocket, next to the waving feather duster. That's why the pro has finished the entire bathroom before our amateur makes it back up the stairs with the powdered cleanser.
Simplify Supplies
There's a reason professional cleaners can tote all the products they need in one tray: they've simplified cleaning products. Relying on a few multi-purpose solutions cuts time and clutter in the cleaning tote. Professional cleaners carry: • light-duty evaporating cleaner (glass cleaner or multisurface cleaner) • heavy-duty degreasing cleaner • tile cleaner • powdered abrasive cleanser That's it! No soap scum remover, no special counter spray, no single-use products designed to clean only blinds or fans or walls. The pros know that these four simple products can handle any ordinary cleaning chore.
Get Motivated
You won't find the pros pausing to follow television soap operas or check their e-mail. Amateur cleaners, too, should limit distractions as they clean. Turn off televisions and let the phone go to voicemail to stay focused on cleaning up... fast. Use appropriate motivators to energize cleaning sessions.
Play upbeat music for an energy boost. Bookworms look forward to cleaning when a book-on-tape plays in the iPod. Cleaning as a team with friends or family members can help you stay on task and ease the boredom of a cleaning session, so buddy up! Working with a parent is also the best way to teach a child skills he or she will need for life.
Make Every Movement Count
Professional cleaners don't circle a room more than once. Taking their place before the bathroom sink, they'll spray and wipe the mirror, scrub the sink, wipe down counters and polish fixtures before they move one inch to the right or left. Don't get physical with your cleaning sessions—make every movement count. Stand fast and clean everything in your path before you move on.
Two Hands Are Better Than One
Professional cleaners don't work as if one arm is in a sling, and neither should you. Get in the habit of using both hands to attack cleaning tasks. Spray a mirror with one hand, wipe it down with the other. Scrub counters with two sponges or cleaning cloths, not just one. Dusting goes twice as fast when a lambs wool duster in one hand cleans nooks and crannies while the feather duster in the other skims flat surfaces.
Think Teamwork
Two people make a bed four times faster than a single cleaner working alone. Watch the pros at work. Working in teams, they make short work of an average home. Where family circumstances permit, make cleaning a family affair. Family members are more reluctant to mess up a clean house when they have been part of the effort!
Tidy Up for Next Time
At the end? Professional cleaners wrap up each job before they leave. Tools are returned to storage areas, totes tidied, spray bottles refilled and soiled cleaning cloths take a trip through washer and dryer. Goal: to be able to hit the ground running next time they visit.
Follow their lead!
At the end of each cleaning session, return tools and supplies to their storage places. Check levels of cleaning products, noting any needed items on a shopping list; launder cleaning cloths and stow away the vacuum cleaner. The finishing touch? Spritz the newly-cleaned home with scented room spray... and enjoy the squeaky-clean feeling!

Distance to TV viewing
August 29th to September 12th, 2013
One of the most important aspects to consider when purchasing a new television is the Liz’ Tips screen size. By: Liz Quinn of Design’in-Mind What if I want to watch in 3D?
Maximum Impact with Minimal Investment Brockville, Ontario
For the optimum 3D experience our expert viewing test panel watch from a distance of four times the screen height away from the screen. Sitting close to a 3D TV reduces the chance of being distracted by the frame of the TV, and helps you feel more involved in the action overall. Fine detail on-screen tends to be of lesser importance than on HD and standard definition, as the brain concentrates more on the 3D depth effect.
Choose one too small, and you won't get the most out of the high definition that your screen has to offer. Go too big, and it will overwhelm the room… not to mention your eyes! So let's take a quick look at what you need to consider when choosing what size TV you need.
Whenever you’re shopping for a TV, remember that many salespersons are on a quota and working on commission sales. So they’re mostly interested (and pressured) in selling you the biggest & the most expensive model. Just because you can afford to buy the biggest model doesn’t mean you need to buy it. When the time is right to shop for a TV, consider: (1) your budget, (2) the size of your room, (3) the viewing distance, (4) desired picture quality.
As per Samsung: Consumers often get seduced by the lure of big-screen televisions on the showroom floor and slap down their credit cards without stopping to consider if they actually have the space to view them properly. Installing a large screen TV in any room isn't a simple matter of moving it in and powering it on.
Determining Your Optimum Viewing Distance
There are several equations and calculators available online that can help you pick what size TV would be best viewed from your couch, each using different variables, such as the model of your TV, ambient light levels, what you’re likely to be watching, and more. Measure the length from your normal sitting position to where you plan to put your display. In most rooms, this will be somewhere between six and eighteen feet. Remember, this measurement is to the front of the screen, not to the back of the cabinet, and to the area where your head (eyes) will be resting on the sofa.
What Are My Screen Size Options? Why is the Right Screen Size Important?
Choosing the right screen size should begin with learning what your options are regarding TV sizes in general. You'll find a wide variety of sizes available, ranging from under 20 inches to over 80 inches in size. Too big - or too small - could quickly lead to dissatisfaction. We've all had the experience of going late to a popular movie, to find the only remaining seats in the front row. Craning your neck at a giant image for two hours isn't really much fun, is it? On the other hand, neither is peering at a small display at the far end of a large room - think of a laptop computer screen at the far end of a long conference table. Seen from too far away, even the best video display is nothing but a window of light and color. Choosing the right one can be a perplexing task. It's not simply a matter of shoe-horning in the biggest display your room will hold. You need to think about placing it in such a way that you maximize its potential, and hence, its value to you as an owner. Sit too close to a big bright TV, and fatigue soon sets in. Sit too far away and you may suffer eyestrain. The right size in the right room is the key to viewing enjoyment.
A Solution for an Optimum Size
There is an optimum size TV for every room - and an easy way to determine how big a TV you need. • How big is your room?
• How is the furniture arranged? Will the windows interfere with your viewing pleasure?
• How far away will you be sitting? (measure from potential TV location to where your head will be resting on the front-side of the sofa…and not the backside of the sofa) • Do you want a CRT (cathode ray tube), DLP (digital light processing), LCD, or Plasma TV?
TVs located in large entertainment units that occupy floor space can bring the screen closer to your viewing position. You need to take all this into account when figuring exactly the right size TV for you.
Where will your new TV live?
If you're still undecided, we recommend screen sizes to consider depending on which room you're planning putting it in.
• TV for kitchens, bedrooms and smaller living rooms - Look for 19 to 26-inch TVs here. Anything bigger may dominate your room and clearly display the lines and pixels that make up the picture, especially if you're watching in standard definition. Digital TV is compressed for broadcast resulting in this loss of quality and other common problems such as a granular effect known as 'picture noise'. The closer you sit, the more apparent this may become.
• TV for living rooms - Mid to large size TVs are usually great if you plan to watch in high definition (HD) in your living room. A 40-inch screen is best watched at around 2.5 metres when watching in HD. If you're watching in standard definition, a 32-inch TV is best from the same 2.5 metre viewing distance. The extra detail of HD means you can watch from the same viewing distance as you normally do but with a bigger screen, and at the same time have less chance of seeing adverse side effects. All manufacturers have a wide range of TVs between 32-inch and 42-inch.
• TV for larger rooms - If you're looking for the perfect home cinema experience, bigger TV screen sizes tend to do the most justice to the extra detail of HD. They also provide the most immersive experience when watching films or a big sports event. Make sure your room is big enough though.
While these are all helpful, following all their advice at once could get complicated, so the best place to start is with the following guidelines:
Important: When installing a DLP* TV you need to have at least 4" of space between the back of your DLP TV and the wall for ventilation purposes. Poor ventilation may cause an increase to the internal temperature of the product, resulting in a shortened component life and degraded performance. *DLP is Digital Light Processing which is a type of projector technology that uses a digital micromirror device.
According to online research, there are many formulas and guidelines to choose from. To finetune the best possible viewing distance when setting up your TV, you may need to try a few experiments, starting with the following 4 formulas and adjusting the distance from there. 1) An effective yet uncomplicated way to determine which TV size to purchase: Calculate the distance from your sitting area to the TV location, i.e. 10.5 feet 10.5 feet x 12 inches = 126 inches / 126” ÷ 2.5 = 50” approx. TV size
2) The second option is to take the diagonal size of the TV, multiply that by 1.5. Then multiply the same measurement by 3. Your TV should sit somewhere between those two numbers from your head. 3) The third option is to take the distance and divide it by 3.5 (which is a compromise between 3 and 4) to get your screen height. For example: 8' divided by 3.5 = 2.28', or 27.36". To determine your screen size for a widescreen display, multiply this by 2. The result: 54.72". To find your screen size for a "legacy" 4:3 model, multiply the screen height by 1.4. The result: 38.3". The disparity between these two sizes isn't as great as it appears. Basically, with eight feet of distance between you and the screen, you should be shopping for a set somewhere between 38" and 55" diagonally.
4) Fourth example: TV size is 50 INCHES DIAGONAL
VIEWING DISTANCE = DIAGONAL x 1.63 = 50 x 1.63 = 81.5 INCHES (6 FEET-10 INCHES)
Armed with these simple formulas, you can use the calculator in your cellphone for some quick figuring in a store and determine the set size that’s perfect for you. Still need help? A qualified electronic salesperson should have the correct information to help you make the right purchase.
