Smoke Alarm and / or Carbon Monoxide detector: complete with fresh batteries Music and favourite book & beverage: a favourite CD or DVD of their Christmas favourites along with their most enjoyable coffees or teas, and perhaps a selection of mini bottles of liqueur (Kahlua, Baileys, Amoretto, etc)…setting the mood for a relaxing evening. You can buy new books; however, a second-hand book store has a variety of great books for a fraction of the cost.

Consider a visit to a care home and bring cheer to a lonely person who has no family close by. Their eyes will let you know how much joy your unselfish gift has brought them.

Here are some safety tips when hanging your outdoor seasonal lighting: • Power down: Before working with outdoor wiring, turn off the electricity to the supply outlet and unplug the connection.

• Look for the CSA International certification mark: Ensure that light strings, cords, spotlights and floodlights are certified by CSA International and marked for outdoor use or wet locations.

• Hang 'em high: When hanging lights outdoors, keep electrical connectors above ground, out of puddles and snow, and away from metal eaves troughs.

• Don't nail it: Use insulated fasteners rather than metal nails or tacks to hold light strings in place. There are new easy pinch-style clips available at your favourite Hardware store; easy to clip onto eavestroughs.

Various Mason jars filled with: nuts, dried apricots, sunflower seeds, pine nuts, and mixture of unsalted peanuts for those on low or no-salt diets, mixture of sugar-free candies & cookies for the diabetics on your list, dried cranberries, gluten-free products, granola, specialty rice, spices & herbs... The Bulk Barn & Natural Food Stores are excellent places to shop for everyone on your list. The jars can be refilled year after year…and goes directly from the store to the cupboard to the table.

• Be weather wise: Remove outdoor lights promptly after the holiday season to avoid damage caused by extended exposure to harsh weather conditions.

Baked goods: find out what their favourite treat is and either bake it or buy it fresh from the local pastry shop. Maybe an arrangement of different squares or cookies for those who no longer bake. Keep in mind any peanut allergies..

• The right receptacles: Whenever possible, connect all outdoor lighting into receptacles protected by weatherproof ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCI). These can provide protection from electric shock by sensing ground leakage and cutting electrical power.

Cheese / meats / poultry / turkey: fresh and wholesome variety from your local butcher shop.

• Save $$$: Start your Christmas light show on December 1st and end it on January 15th. It will save you money, it will save hydro, and it will help save your planet. ~ If you cannot wait till Dec 1st to switch on, then please give consideration to our veterans; wait until AFTER the November 11th memorial day.

Gluten Free products: many local stores offer gluten-free products.

Decorative Christmas tray filled with specialty crackers / cheese / paté / cold cuts / fruit, complete with cheese knife & festive paper napkins Soaps & hand towels: scented or unscented soaps in a decorative glass dish & a couple of hand towels to complement their bathroom scheme. Sears offer personalized towels.

Flowers: fresh or artificial poinsettia or a Christmas cactus or favourite plant…add miniature (or rice) red lights & wrap the pot in colourful paper for a festive look.

Your local Art Centre: a season’s pass or a ticket to their preferred show.

• Time it: Use an outdoor timer certified by CSA International to switch lights on and off. Lights should be turned on after 7 p.m. to avoid the electricity rush hour.

To reduce holiday “baking stress” and save time, here is an easy cookie recipe to whip up when you have company coming and absolutely have no time to bake.

UNBAKED COOKIES - combine 2 cups sugar, 4 TBSP ml cocoa, 1/2 cup butter and 1/2 cup milk in a saucepan. Bring to a boil. Add 1/2 tsp of vanilla. Remove from heat. Blend in 3 cups Instant Oats and 1 cup grated coconut-optional. Drop by the spoonful onto waxed paper or cutting board. Chill until firm. Eat, freeze or hide them.
