Why Shop Locally While researching the benefits and consequences of shopping locally, I was astonished to find out how much of an impact shopping locally can have on our local economy. Local First. Sounds simple enough. Should be easy. I can do that. However, when I go to the doctor in Ottawa, while I'm there I'll just stop by the shopping centre and pick up a few things so I don't have to stop when I get back. Oh, and I should stop at the Hardware store and see what they have for flooring so I can get started on the renovations in the basement. And maybe I should stop at the pharmacy for that prescription in my wallet, by then I'll need lunch. And so it spirals ... Why not wait till I get back home, and spend my money where it will benefit my community? Are we saying don't ever shop out of town? No, but we are saying look at local businesses first. If the quality of the product and the quality of service is what you want, it only makes sense to shop at home. Every dollar spent in town will be re-spent seven times before it leaves your community. If we all shop local first, the spiral will be upward not downward, and we will all benefit. We want and need our neighbouring business to succeed; if they succeed, we succeed. Any and all new businesses should be welcomed with open arms. They will bring employees and customers to shop at your business. The reason for the shift from farm vehicles to super cars would be because of a feud against Enzo Ferrari—who obviously owns the Italian high-end sports car manufacturing company Ferrari. Lakes and ponds as well as moving waterways also pose an increased risk. When covered in snow, some don't completely freeze making them dangerous places for a pet who doesn't know any better than to stay away. Keep your pet on a leash, or stick to routine, solid ground pathways and areas you and your pet are well-used to. Keep pet's nails well-trimmed as longer nails don't allow for good grip and footing in icy conditions.

We've all experienced how dehydrating winter can be. Outdoor bowls will need to be freshly refilled several times a day during freezing temperatures as he'll be drinking more often to keep hydrated. If bowls are metal, they should be exchanged for unbreakable Pyrex glass or plastic that won't crack, so tongues won't get nastily stuck to the metal. The more time your pet spends in outside temperatures, the more food he'll need to keep warm. A pet left in a car, (which virtually turns into a freezer while parked) when you go shopping or holiday visiting can just as easily freeze to death in the winter as he can die from heat prostration in a hot car in summer. Leave your pet safely at home!

Helpful Tips to 'WINTERIZE' Your Pets! More pets are lost during the dark, winter months than any other time of year. Out in the cold and blowing wind, a pet can lose their way as their scenting ability may be negatively affected. If your dog or cat doesn't already wear a reflective collar with id tags, now's the time to put one on her. Whether lost or on a daily walk, the collar will help her be seen by passing motorists and id tags will help her be brought home.

Many cats and other critters cannot resist crawling up under the hood of your car seeking warmth and shelter. Before you start your car, get into the habit of 'hood banging', calling out, or even a quick honk of your horn. Make enough noise and give an extra minute or so to alert any cat that's crawled up inside your engine. This will give them time to escape and save you from the horrific consequences of an animal being caught in the brutal machinery of your car.

All pets, including birds, bunnies and reptiles need warmth and a draft-free zone for comfort in winter. If you have their cages next to a window, make sure there isn't a draft, or move them to a warmer spot for the winter months. Reptile custodians will need to be extra-vigilant in keeping habitats at the correct, warm temperature with minimal fluctuation. Remember your reptile relies on its environment to keep its body at the correct temperature. Keep all heating lamps, ceramic heating elements, etc..away from direct body-contact with your pet to avoid accidental burns. Have battery or other alternative heating sources on hand in case of power failures. It's a good idea to keep a thermometer both on the inside and outside of your reptiles cage to monitor temperature. Warmth and hydration are the two main concerns in keeping your birds winter safe and comfy. Speak to your breeder about the safest products to use in keeping your bird warm. Be extremely careful when using spaceheaters, kerosene, wood stoves, gas fireplaces or any other heaters that do not vent to the outdoors, as these can prove fatal. If you like a roaring fireplace in winter, make sure your bird is safe elsewhere, behind closed doors to avoid deadly fumes. Radiator-style electric heaters without exposed heating elements and that do not have polytetrafluroethylene (PTFE) coatings appear to be the safest. Additionally, watch for over-heating! If you see your bird panting, extending his wings or neck he is over-heated! Keep him hydrated with a bird mister, and allow him to bathe on a regular basis. Keep your home's humidity level at a comfortable level. If you are feeling the dry air, you can be sure your bird is also. Hanging your laundry inside to dry is an easy, old-fashioned way of naturally increasing moisture in the air. Be grateful for your body that is alive today with your earthly experience. Be grateful for your working mind which has a banquet of options to choose from to create a meaningful day. Be grateful for your loved ones, your job, your warm home, even your bills as they are symbols that someone trusts you and believes in your ability to pay them! After you fill your mind with gratitude, fill your heart with joy!

Take time in your day to play! To laugh! Watch a funny movie. Sing a silly song. Watch your pet, or child at play. They are great teachers of how to revel in unbridled joy! Choose to feel happy! Release your worries! There is nothing so serious in life, no illness, no debt, no regret, no worry that was ever made better by stewing in it. Relax and rejoice! There is nothing so grievous in life, that you cannot make better by pouring Light on it. Give it to God and ask Him to show you the lesson, then open to receive the knowledge and the way back into joy. Each and every Soul has the capacity to be a Light-house in darkness, not only for yourself, but for all around you. It is your assignment as well as your destiny to shine your Light exactly where you are, as brilliantly and as brightly as you can. When you do your part, the Universe will immediately respond, presenting you with even more opportunities for happiness, joy and Light.
