Spring is here! With it, will soon follow an explosion of spring babies. To reduce this constant overflow of innocent fur-babies to shelters, we as their caretakers must decide to step up and take responsibility. The era of 'not having the time,' just not caring enough or turning our backs and allowing 'nature to take its course' is over.

Such lower-consciousness mentality has no place in today's enlightening world.

In Europe, only a small percentage of pets are sterilized, yet somehow they do NOT experience the mass, unwanted pet explosion we here in North America have each year. Why is that? Do Europeans love their pets more than North Americans do? Not necessarily. Where they clearly have us beat, is in a word, RESPONSIBILITY. They do not leave pet reproduction up to the natural urges and judgement calls of their occasionally, hormone-driven, pets!

2. When their females go into heat, which in dogs, is only twice per year for a couple of weeks, they keep them away from unprotected sex! Why does this work for them?

In North America we relentlessly focus on butchering our animals in a seemingly neverending assembly line of sterilization. This line of thinking and action has NOT been able to control the issue of unwanted pets! We don't automatically give hysterectomies and vasectomies to our children when they become hormonally-'challenged', and we would NEVER sterilize 7 and 8 week old babies, knowing full well, they need their parts & hormones to grow into healthy adults. It is the opinion of this author (and only this author's opinion) that the current automaton method of addressing pet over-population is completely off the mark.

I keep in mind that most every Shelter is perpetually working in 'overwhelm' with an abundance of homeless animals, too little man-power and financial support. And some (not all!)Veterinarians may just be blindly following their school's out-dated training without questioning the changing times. As in every profession, there are some that do their job more for making money, as opposed to answering a 'calling.' (additionally to ridiculously over-priced sterilizations, there are some pushing far too many vaccinations as well as selling dead, kibbled foods and other

'pet store' products from their office) At best, it's a 'wham-bam, thank you Ma’am' thought process to end pet-overpopulation, IF there is any real thought put into it at all!

Here then is this author's alternative suggestions to address this very serious issue. Please, let's stop throwing our limited resources into a system that is failing! Better use of these funds would be in EDUCATING the public in the responsibilities of pet-custodianship and alternative ways of preventing unwanted pet reproduction.

• Educate children. If parent's can't/won't do it, implement school programs from kindergarten on up, reinforcing through each grade, responsible pet-custodianship. Starting them young, and positively reinforcing as they grow, will quickly produce a new generation of responsible adults.

• Create and enforce stricter laws to end puppy mills once and for all. The only reason puppy mills exist is because of human apathy and greed. These are cruel and inhumane places. If you know of one, BE RESPONSIBLE and TELL the authorities.

• END 'Franken-puppy' breeders! The world doesn't need a new 'mixed-breed'. There are more than enough qualified breeds from which to choose, for every potential need. We must focus on taking care of those that are living today! Can you guess how many puppies will be tossed aside in their quest to find the newest 'Franken-puppy'? One, is too many.

• Breeders of 'recognized breeds' should be limited as to how many litters and how many years between litters. Responsible breeders already do this, but not all are RESPONSIBLE. • Most of all, DO YOUR PART. Take 'being' as in, 'being a loving, responsible pet custodian' as an action word. If you say you love your pets as 'family members' then treat them as such.

• Watch out for them as you would any cherished, family member. Keep them safe and healthy.

• Flush out irresponsible breeders where you can. If someone is breeding each time their bitch goes into heat, or trying to create a 'Franken-puppy' tell them it's unethical and to STOP. • Speak up where you can. Have a dialogue with your neighbours if they have their pets run hodge-podge through town. If you can talk to a child, you can formulate and volunteer to give a 'responsible pet custodian' talk for a local school.

DOGPARK Responsibility is a CHOICE that begins with you and me. If you know you will not be a responsible pet-custodian, then please, by all means GET YOUR PET STERILIZED!
