Massage Therapy for Athletes and Recreational Sports An effective warm up and cool down routine is an important part of physical exercise. It can help to reduce post exercise muscle soreness and decrease the chance of injuries such as strains and sprains.

Massage therapy is becoming more acknowledged as an asset to an athletes pre/post event regime because its aids the body in preparing for physical activity, and helps muscles and soft tissues to cool down afterward.

Depending on the intended goal or outcome of treatment, techniques are generally designed to draw blood to the area, reduce spasm, decrease swelling and stimulate or inhibit the muscles contractile unit.

In terms of "sports massage" there are three basic styles or focuses of treatment.

Pre-competition massage (warm up) - Can be used during the training period leading up to the event or minutes before it starts.

- Short, brisk techniques are used to draw blood and oxygen to the area and promote optimal muscle performance.

Post-competition massage (cool down) - Can be used immediately after event or a few days/weeks after.

- Slow, rhythmic techniques are used to flush out tissues, decrease muscle activity and reduce any possible spasm.

Athletic injuries (acute or chronic) Registered massage therapists are trained to use remedial exercise alongside massage to rehabilitate athletes after an acute or chronic sports injury. Techniques are targeted at muscles, tendons (strains) and ligaments (sprains) in order to decrease pain, swelling, spasm and the formation of adhesions or scar tissue. They work to increase range of motion, strength and muscle balance as well as speed up healing times.

Using massage therapy as a fitness aid is a safe, effective way to promote optimal physical performance.
