Holidays along the Seaway With numerous job losses, and the economy still not yet at its best, you might be currently undecided about taking a trip abroad this coming summer. FORT WELLINGTON another educational historic site! Located in Prescott, the Fort was built during the war of 1812 to defend the St. Lawrence River shipping route between Montreal and Kingston from possible attack by the United States. Come and learn about this era. UPPER CANADA VILLAGE Tour this village and go back in time! This magical experience will transport you back in time to the 1860s. A key part of the experience is the authentic buildings that make up the village and the era-specific activities that each portray. Costumed interpreters will be happy to tell you what life was like in the 19th century. Situated between Cornwall and Morrisburg along the St.Lawrence, this day out will impress the whole family! The buildings commemorate the inundation of lands for the Hydro and Seaway projects in 1958. HISTORIC CORNWALL JAIL Built in 1833, the jail operated until 2002. Step right into a cell to experience life behind bars – at least for a few moments. There are stories of prison life from the point of view of the guards as well as the inmates. You’ll also learn about escapes, and we have many ghost stories to share! There is so much more to do, I don’t have enough space in my column to name them all...Many festivals, including the Lift-Off in Cornwall, Maxville Fair and Highland games, Williamstown Fair, the Prescott’s Shakespeare Festival and many more... I didn’t even talk about the various campsites by the Seaway for those “nature lovers”, many marinas for those “boaters” and many golf courses for the golfers! Look around we live in a beautiful part of the world enjoy it during your holidays this year!

Fear of Thunderstorms Is There Hope? (part 2) If your pet is affected by thunderstorm/ noise phobia, he is desperately trying to escape to a spot where ideally, he won't see the lightning flashes, or hear the ear piercing cracks of thunder (or fireworks). A room without windows, or one where you can close the blinds or even temporarily cover them, would do well. Also, make it a place where he cannot hear the thunder as loudly. Perhaps a downstairs room, like a basement, a den, or second bathroom. If you don't have a downstairs, then a bedroom closet would do nicely. If you can, place his crate there. Cover it, if it is an open wire crate. Throw in some blankets he can really burrow into. He wants to feel protected, especially from above. You could even use an appropriately sized, cardboard box placed on its side to create a covered, roof effect. Never lock him in there during a storm. Depending on the severity of his phobia, some pets need to feel they can still escape to another place (inside the house only!) Some will need to pace, hide under the bed or sit pressed up against you to gain relief. Be supportive, remain calm. Mothers, for thousands of years have comforted their babies by gently wrapping them in a snug blanket. For pets, the 'Thundershirt' or 'Anxiety Wrap' (google for more options) have created convenient, very effective products which supply this same premise of applying gentle yet snug pressure to the torso for immediate stress/anxiety reduction. They come in all sizes for both dogs and cats and with a 100% money back guarantee are well worth a try. Follow instructions closely for introducing your pet to this. Strong, prescription medications are not the ideal way to deal with this issue. Most have significant, undesirable side effects and many will do nothing to remove the fear, just make them too drugged to react to it. Some tranquillizers make pets more sensitive to noises. 'Rescue Remedy', is a side effect free, natural alternative Bach Flower Essence which helps fears/terror on the emotional level, calming, without drugging. For pets, they have a glycerin, not alcohol preserved base. This can be safely used on
all varieties of pets, from the largest to the smallest. Rather than trying to squirt a few drops into the mouth without contaminating the dropper by contact and making your stock bottle last much longer, I suggest using a small 4 ounce misting bottle (easily purchased at a dollar store). Add 4 ounces of good water, and empty one dropper full of the Rescue Remedy into it. Shake. Thoroughly mist the air just above your pet, do not spray it directly at him as he may think you are punishing him. Use at the first sign of discomfort and repeat misting above him every few minutes as needed until your pet calms down. According to DVM's Nicholas Dodman and Linda Aronson, an article in The Whole Dog Journal, April 2000 issue, states the hormone Melatonin sold in tablets at Health Stores has shown dramatic positive results. Research thoroughly for pure brands and appropriate dosage. Dog Appeasing Pheromone is a synthetic copy of a hormone secreted by nursing female dogs and is well worth a try. If leaving a battery-powered radio on for comfort, ensure it's on an FM station. When left on any AM station, the blaring crackles of static interference from incoming lightning strikes will negate any benefit. While most think of their dog's storm phobia, other pets can be affected as well. However, if your cat is affected, she may find her 'safe place' and be hidden away long before the storm has even arrived! However if you do see her in distress, please go ahead and utilize any of the measures in this article. If your pet is a bird, rabbit or hamster, the least you can do is move her cage away from the window and cover it. You can also freely use alcohol-free flower essences. 'Storm phobia' is progressive. Meaning if you don't help your pet as soon as he starts exhibiting signs of fear, he will get worse as time goes on... Deal with it now. Punishing or yelling at your dog, will only make it worse for him and for you. Remember, helping your pet, is at the same time, helping you!
