Having said that, let’s focus on the holiday part... I can’t say that I need holidays to get away from my job because my job comes with me on holidays most of the time! When you love what you’re doing, work doesn’t feel like work...although fatigue can accumulate over days and weeks. Those are just minor details, the upmost important thing about holidays is to be able to focus on your family, friends and siblings... catch up with them without thinking that you have to be at the office or that you’ll be late for an important meeting. It’s to be able to
sit down without having one foot out the door. I hope you will all have at least a week’s holiday during the summer and that you will be able to soak up a little sun, if he dare stays with us more than a couple hours! What are you planning to do this summer? In my book, there is no other activity that gets the whole family together like camping or boating. Enjoying life outdoors, swimming, horseshoes, eating, and sitting around a campfire. Nothing beats toasting marshmallows over a campfire at night; although, the kids just like to see them catch on fire! Summer holidays are the time to make memories. Spend the day fishing, hiking, biking, or trying to catch frogs in the pond. Whatever your pleasure, the memories will last forever. "Remember the year we went canoeing and saw the eagle?". "How about the time that the wind was blowing so hard through the notch. The chili that night never tasted so good!" Holidays makes you connect with your kids. Every year, hundreds of kids learn to ride a bike while camping or while being at the cottage! Why? Because Mom & Dad are there helping and encouraging them on. And years later when they return with their own kids, they'll remember that day when they overcame their fear, and became a "big" boy or girl. Families that camp, boat or own/rent a cottage know what quality time really is. What's it like to sit around the fire or watch the sunset from your dock without the blackberry firing messages at you? The TV is off, the email is on hold, just sit and relax. This well-deserved time off in nature gives you the chance to explore the outdoors at your pace. Whether you love to bird watch, listen to running water in the creek, or follow animal tracks through the woods, there is something for everyone to enjoy. People spend more time cooking up and eating great meals with their friends while in holidays then any other time. Wake up to the smell of coffee, bacon, home fries, and maple syrup in the morning. In the evening the smells of marinated steaks, barbecue chicken fill the air... On this note, have a great month of July, enjoy every moment rain or shine!

However, if you had to rely on the kindness of someone else's heart to supply your every drop, you'd probably think about it alot more! Hydration needs vary for different species and these needs always increase during the dog days of Summer. Your pets, be they bunnies, birds, lizards, cats or dogs have their minimum hydration requirement and must rely on YOU to provide it for them.

All pets need and deserve a clean and freshly-filled water dish. Good rule of thumb? Look at his water dish and ask yourself, 'Would I drink this?' If not, don't think it's 'good enough' for your pet. During my years as a professional Animal Communicator, it was an issue brought up by pets time and time again! It's possible that we've all been guilty at one time or another of a little heat-induced forgetfulness. However, a little forgetfulness on our part can become a very grave problem for our pets. Dehydration is a serious situation. Your pet may exhibit the signs of dehydration and you may think he's just 'laying around' because it's a hot day. He may well be, but to be certain he's not entering the stages of dehydration, ensure, don't assume he's had access to water. Here are some of the 'Universal Signs of Dehydration' you can check. Your pet may show one or several of the signs.

Lethargy. Vomiting and/or diarrhea. Loss of appetite. Panting, helps to cool, but excessive panting leads to excessive drooling/ salivation which then accelerates dehydration from loss of fluid. Weakness. 'Sunken eyes' (usually affecting both eyes equally) Pain, sometimes severe. Elevated heart rate. Dry gums and other mucus membranes. Loose or wrinkled skin (due to dryness) In bunnies watch for 'drooping ears'. In lizards, watch for 'stuck' shed skin on their legs and feet. Finally, Collapse. Unconsciousness (possible stroke). Coma. Death. Hopefully, you'll have noticed signs beforehand, but if your pet has collapsed this is a

most urgent emergency, death is near. Stay calm but move quickly! To try to save him, while en route to Emergency, use a full dropper of 'Rescue Remedy' directly onto the tongue and gums repeating every minute or so (give yourself some too!) until responsive. Wrap animal in cool, wet towels for the full on air-conditioned drive to the Veterinarian. If you notice earlier signs, test your pet with the 'Tent Test'. Gently lift the skin on the back of your pet's neck or between the shoulder blades (don't try this with birds). If the skin stays in one place rather than immediately returning to its normal position, he is dehydrated. If responsive, offer water. Immediately bring pet into shade, or better still, bring pet to air-conditioned room. Place cool, wet towels on him. It's always good to have your veterinarian check him out, as he can help him quickly in ways that you cannot so there is no permanent damage. Also, do the 'press it test' (Capillary refill time test). Use a finger to press on your pet's gums. Remove your finger and there should be a white spot. Count the seconds before the white spot returns to its normal pink colour. It should take only a few seconds. If longer, your pet is dehydrated (again, don't try this on the bird!). Remember to never, ever bring your pet out in the car on a hot day and leave him alone in the car. Your windows cannot be opened wide enough to keep him safe. It only takes a few moments for the temperature to rise to deadly levels. Believe me, your pet would rather stay home in a cool basement and live to see you another day, than die a horrible, painful death waiting for you to come back to the car from your shopping. If you ever come across a pet locked inside a car on a hot day, even if the windows are partly opened, if the custodians are nowhere insight, DO NOT HESITATE to take the license plate number and call the Police! Whatever the temperature is outside, it is significantly hotter inside the car and the pet will have only moments left. The Police will rescue the pet. There is a reason why this animal's plight came into your awareness and I am certain it was not just for you to pass him by.
