Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) Spillage of body fluids Chlorine-releasing agents fall into two groups: • Sodium dichloroisocyanurate (NaDCC), e.g. Presept®, Haz Tabs®, Actichlor®, Actichlor-Plus®, Chlor-Clean® • Sodium hypochlorite (NaCIO), e.g. Milton®, Domestos®

The use of NaDCC is recommended for blood / blood stained body fluid spillages. It is less resistant than hypochlorite’s are to organic matter, less corrosive, has a longer shelf life, because it is manufactured as tablets or granules. Some also contain a compatible detergent e.g. Actichlor-Plus®, Chlor-Clean® which cleans and disinfects at the same time.

Different concentrations are required in different circumstances. Always refer to the manufacturer’s instructions to ensure appropriate concentration is achieved when making up the solution. For blood spills a concentration of 10.000 parts per million (ppm) available chlorine is needed.

Chlorine-releasing agents should never be mixed with acids or used directly on spills of urine as this could result in the release of toxic fumes.

For Blood Spillages

• Disposable gloves • Disposable apron • Face protection if risk of splashing into face and eyes • Clinical waste bag • Disposable paper towels • Disposable scoop if appropriate • Chlorine releasing agent eg Presept®, Haz Tabs®, Actichlor® solution or granules with a concentration of 10,000ppm available • Colour coded bucket with warm water and neutral detergent solution e.g. Hospec®.

For Other Body Fluids Spills
