Infection Prevention and Control Collec&on of a Catheter Specimen of Urine (CSU) Purpose To ensure all relevant staff are aware of the principles of collection of a catheter specimen of urine from a service user and understand the rationale that informs the principle, to prevent cross infection between service users, staff and visitors and prevent Health Care Associated Infections.

Target Group This procedure is relevant to healthcare or care staff that have received specific training in collecting a catheter specimen of urine from a service user.

Introduction Catheter samples of urine should only be taken for valid reasons such as suspected presence of infection. Samples should not be taken directly from the catheter but from the sampling port of the bag’s drainage tubing to minimise the risk of contamination.

Epic 3 National Evidence Based Guidelines for preventing Healthcare Associated Infections in NHS Hospitals in England (2013) states that the sampling port and an aseptic technique should be used to obtain a catheter sample of urine.

This guidance should be used in conjunction with other associated infection prevention and control policies and procedures such as Hand Hygiene, Waste Management, Use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and Aseptic Non Touch Technique (ANTT).

Only appropriately trained and competent healthcare or care staff should collect a catheter specimen of urine using an aseptic non-touch technique.

Sterile 5 ml syringe Blue 23G needle if the port to be sampled is not ‘needle-less’ 1 pair single use gloves and 1 pair single use sterile gloves.

Disposable plastic apron Sterile universal specimen container 70% isopropyl alcohol and 2% chlorhexidine (CHG ) impregnated wipes Laboratory request form Clamp if necessary Sharps box if necessary Hand sanitizer Clinical waste bag

Ra&onale

Assemble all equipment needed for process

To ensure all equipment is accessible during the process

Explain and discuss the procedure with the service user verbally and obtain consent

To ensure that the service user understands the procedure • Check service users identity • Check valid consent

Perform effective hand hygiene by washing hands with soap and water or using hand sanitizer if hands are visible clean

To reduce the risk of infection

Put on disposable single use gloves and To reduce the risk of infection a disposable plastic apron If there is no urine in the tubing, clamp To obtain adequate urine to sample the tubing a few centimetres below the sampling port until sufficient urine collects in the tube Remove gloves and perform effective hand hygiene by washing hands with soap and water or using hand sanitizer if hands are visible clean

Put on disposable single use sterile gloves

Clean the sample port with a 70% isopropyl alcohol wipe; allow to dry for 20 seconds

To reduce the risk of cross infection and specimen contamination

Infection Prevention and Control Collec&on of a Catheter Specimen of Urine (CSU) Either: Needle-less collection port system: Insert the sterile syringe into the port and aspirate urine and remove syringe To obtain a specimen of urine Or : If syringe collection port system: Attach needle to syringe and insert into port at 45ᵒ angle, aspirate urine and remove needle from port Remove needle from syringe using hands free removal device on sharps box Place urine into sterile specimen container and dispose of the syringe into sharps box

Label specimen container and seal securely in a specimen bag

To identify specimen correctly and provide safe transportation packaging

Perform hand hygiene with either soap and water or hand sanitizer

To reduce the risk of infection

Record all information in service user’s records including date and time and type of specimen

To ensure effective and accurate record keeping is maintained and documentation is complete

Specimens should be sent to laboratory for testing as soon as possible after obtaining them.

Where this is not immediately possible the specimen, once labelled with service user details, date, time and type of specimen and secured in a transportation bag should be retained in a refrigerator designated for specimens only and sent to the laboratory at the earliest opportunity.

Specimens must not be stored in a fridge used for any other purpose i.e. medicines or food.
