FULL OF HERSELF In search of times that are past, the memory of what we were, stories to share, encountering another; connection, disconnection, the search for belonging. Images and words establish a dialogue from an identity that searches for a sense of belonging and its own place. This identity is constructed and deconstructed through a constant movement, of gaze, reflection, memory, longing and the awareness of the passing of time. Two women record themselves with a video camera on stage. The image that the camera captures is projected live on a screen which is situated upfront the stage. In this way, the perspective of the stage space unfolds, offering the viewer both his or her own point of observation and the camera’s, which mirrors the subjectivity that is brewing between the observer and the observed. The visual narrative is accompanied by a dialogue of intimate character, from which questions arise regarding how subjectivity emerges within a context where other gazes are involved. The text offers a space for this search from a poetic perspective, evoking the imagery of the listener and creating diverse landscapes along which the live images pass.

‘Full of herself’ is a dialogue and a dance that moves to the rhythm of the image and the word. A subjective gaze projected from the inside and reflected on the outside, a dialectical path that invites us to walk forward while continuing to remembering. Full of herself as presented this evening is a set form that results from a collaboration that started in the fall of 2016. This form is however not fixed and will keep growing and changing in relation to the ongoing research and new dialogues and collaborations that set the context for this project.

TEXTS I For every path I explore So many remain unwalked There’s always another life I cannot see But now and then I have a glimpse of it Other faces, other landscapes, other music, other sex; lovers, dances, faraway places... From nowhere to nowhere The sound of my guts settling down Shows me where I have yet to go Often, before, I need to go back to a familiar place. My grandmother used to be a servant for rich families in the city She would travel to many places when they took her on their holidays But if she didn’t like how they treated her, she would always leave That was her way of moving freely The much expected revolution never came. Nothing really changed until many years later, when the system deteriorated on its own. And by then she was too old Now, nobody can rule over anyone else anymore, and yet everybody seems to be waiting for instructions A spectator is full of expectations But you can’t tell him what to expect And he won’t tell you either what to do Or what’s the way… Nobody will, Because no one really knows Everyone entertains themselves.

II Prudence waits She wonders while she waits… She thinks something is around the corner, something great, something big, something she almost won’t believe. Prudence knows that if she didn’t wait nothing would happen. She would desperately try to do something in order to change the quiet around and inside her. But she stays there, before a new world is created but after the old one has gone She doesn’t know where to make her home and she’s tired of searching. Oh, sweet Prudence, I miss the daylight, I miss being alive, I miss the surprise factor… That uncertainty I used to complain about; how much I would give now for some of that not knowing and losing control. Prudence waits She wonders while she waits She imagines a smaller world, where she would feel safe and could play, like in a playground. She doesn’t want to grow up… She’s tired, she follows the song. The song is playing on a piano. The piano is in tune. She is not in tune. She’s not, but she starts to readjust her thinking as the song plays. She notices there is no hope. For her. For any of them. She will do her best. She doesn’t yet know what her best is She’s waiting for another rhythm. She thinks something is around the corner, Something great, Something big, Something that she almost won’t believe.

III From the silent throne I observe the decline of my breath The streets we pass through, are ancient stories We walk along them as if we had been imported from a different tale Streets that lead to more streets That lead to more streets That lead...where?

IV Where am I going next? It’s funny I should ask I just arrived I just arrived I don’t know what I’m doing here It may not feel good but then… You just cope with that. It’s what it is… What is she doing? - you may think Why is she pretending? What is she trying to make us believe…? That she’s Irish or something? I don’t know, that’s the thing. I don’t know. I don’t know whether this is about Irish or not… I don’t think so. I just finish each sentence in a specific way I don’t even think it sounds like Irish… It’s not about Irish. It’s not about anything. I feel responsible though This is what it is, this is it… God, I am scared of your judgment, ‘cause: what if you get it wrong?

03.06.2017 - Project(ion) Room - Brussels

Here, there’s no control whatsoever of the situation It may not feel good But it’s not about feeling good all the time...is it? Or is it? Is it about feeling good? I don’t know… I don’t know… Then, this is the point when the thunder comes and kills her. - Do you mean a thunderbolt? - The thing that hits the trees and breaks them? - Yes... But it didn’t kill her… - How do you know? - Cause I’ve watched the movie

V Run, run, run… As if it was your last chance! Run or he’ll catch you! You have to be faster! You have to be faster than him ‘Cause if you’re not he’ll get you! Don’t let him! He’s very powerful but you can do it C’mon! You can do it C’mon! Through the hole…! Through the hole...Now! Look! Look at me When I count to three look at me 1… 2… 3... When I count to 5 you Will look at me… 1… 2… 3… 4… (5)

VI - Are you cold? - I noticed I hadn’t noticed anything all the way here I hadn’t even looked at people’s faces I hadn’t seen… - A man walks down the street and finds a dwarf a man walks up the street and finds a giant when the two meet, the dwarf looks up and the giant looks down they smile: ‘have a nice day’ Then each one follows their own path. - If one day I get lost remind me... ‘this is unlike you’ - Listen…We have to move to the North They will soon be here We have to go now or it’ll be too late We cannot fight now…there aren’t enough of us If we stay we’ll die We have to move to the West; there we’ll find some allies I don’t know much about battles and strategy but… If I know one thing..is that we have to stay and fight Because if we don’t do it now They will always come after us So...we will spread out and surround them And when they least expect us… attack! The chances of winning are not great; but we have to go on till the end… Don’t be afraid, we are alone… We are alone here… It’s getting late… Why don’t you try to sleep? You need to get some rest and save your strength for tomorrow Tomorrow will be a long day. It won’t be easy.

03.06.2017 - Project(ion) Room - Brussels

You need to get ready for it. - I noticed I hadn’t noticed anything on my way here I hadn’t even looked at people’s faces. I hadn’t seen… - Once... every night a different man would enter my chamber. He would entertain me and introduce me to different kinds of pleasure… I would entertain him too… And I didn’t love one... but many. The man I loved had many names, And he rewarded me with love. But his love had other names too. I feared for so long about losing such a love… But never was that love stronger Than what I can feel knowing nothing. - Is that true? - Well... not exactly. They would have to pay. But I wouldn’t get much at all. I think the flat fee was like 60€ and that would include a hot dog and a beer and unlimited access.

03.06 .2017 - Project(ion) Room - Brussels

VII If I had been a man I would have gone for it, just do, not hesitate so much I would have gone for one thing without questioning it so much Maybe, if I had been a man but not every man, not any man, just a man, like, for example, you I would have concentrated on that thing that gave me pleasure and not questioned why, why this one not another and just spent time doing it. If I had been a man I would have move not so slowly, nor so carefully I would have chosen one direction, not so many. And if had been a woman maybe I would have been the same But not every woman, not any woman, another woman A woman that didn’t doubt A woman that didn’t wait A woman who knew what she wanted A woman unlike me A woman like you, maybe, who seems so confident.

VIII I chose the solitude of a palm tree in a pine forest. I didn’t feel alone. When I heard voices instead of language I wondered ‘where are my people?’ They were not back home Home was not back, where it was. Here, the sun is further away And the space is quieter People speak softer. This morning, I entered a bar It was completely silent. This city is like a library. I’m curious to read every book’s title But I rarely pick one up and start reading it I don’t belong here But somehow I have become this place.

03.06 .2017 - Project(ion) Room - Brussels

IX D’you know what I was thinking? Like…do you remember when you were 15? And you just dressed like, however you wanted; you were trying… and sometimes you would wear like these weird combinations, with funny colours or whatever I was thinking like…back then I really thought I was gonna conquer the world And be…the queen Not the queen, but you know… Like you have the feeling that your whole life is in front of you… Like ...everyone is waiting for you because you’ve come here to do something… Amazing. And like you’re running away all the time from home, ‘cause you just want them to leave you alone, and see the outside world... So you end up in these weird places all of a sudden, meet funny people And you feel special because every day is a different story. Just having fun! Like that was the point! Having a good party… Just with yourself, wherever you went… Just doing weird things or like… Even if you got into trouble, it didn’t matter because anyway, You knew the best part of life was still to come I don’t know… Maybe it’s still to come?
