On behalf of the Department of Industrial Engineering, I take great pleasure in presenting to you our 2018-2019 departmental scholarship recipients. These students have proven themselves to be excellent students and citizens, and we are proud to have them as part of our program.

For the 2018-2019 academic year, we have awarded over $118,000 in scholarships to fifty-four industrial engineering students. Clearly, this would not be possible without the generous financial support of the Arkansas Academy of Industrial Engineering and several other members of our industrial engineering family. The students, faculty and staff of the Department of Industrial Engineering are most thankful for this support.

In addition to reviewing this publication, we hope you will take time to view the 2018 Scholarship Impact Video on the aaie.uark.edu website. This video gives you a concrete example of the difference you are making in these young lives.

Amin Asadi

Brisa Bartczak

Esfahan, Iran

North Little Rock, Arkansas

Amin is the son of Gholamreza and Zohreh. He was born in Esfahan, Iran. He graduated high school as the top student with degrees in both mathematics and physics. Amin received his bachelor’s and master’s degree in industrial engineering from top universities in Iran.

Brisa is a senior industrial engineering student.

She plans to graduate in May 2019 with a minor in psychology. In addition to pursuing her bachelor’s degree, Brisa is also a cadet in ROTC working towards a commission as an officer in the United States Air Force.

Having academic and professional experience, Amin moved to the United States in 2016 to pursue his Ph.D. at the University of Arkansas.

He is a member of the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers and the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences.

During the past two years, working as a research assistant, he has developed his skill of creatively thinking about various research areas of industrial engineering and optimization.

Amin also worked as a teaching assistant for Introduction to Operations Research in spring 2018, and the instructor for Applied Probability and Statistics I in summer 2018. It is his hope that these opportunities will help prepare him to fulfill his dream to become an influential faculty member and serve the industrial engineering profession.

Brisa is a member of the Institute of Industrial & Systems Engineers, Alpha Pi Mu, and the Society of Women Engineers. She also volunteers with the Fayetteville Animal Shelter taking shelter dogs to the Fayetteville Farmer’s Market each week.

This fall she will be studying abroad in Colchester, England to complete her psychology minor and experience a new culture. She hopes to utilize her industrial engineering and leadership skills in the U.S. Air Force and future careers.

Elizabeth is a junior industrial engineering student from Andrews, Texas. She chose to pursue a career in industrial engineering because of the subject’s versatility and it allowed her to apply her leadership and problem solving strengths.

Cayman plans to complete her undergraduate studies in May of 2020. Her interest in industrial engineering comes from a love of problem solving. She also likes that the discipline allows her to incorporate business, math and science and has a broad range of possible career paths.

Elizabeth, better known as “Biz” by her peers, is a mentor for the Conversation Club RSO, an active member of Pi Beta Phi, and involved in the U of A’s Society of Women Engineers chapter.

Elizabeth studied abroad in Tokyo, Japan during summer 2018.

John L. Imhoff Global Studies Scholarship - $2,000

A member of the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers, Cayman worked during summer 2018 as an engineering intern for Hall Tank, a tank manufacturer, in North Little Rock, Arkansas.

In her free time, she enjoys spending time outside and being with friends and family. Cayman is passionate about helping others and hopes to use her degree to make a positive impact on people.

Andrew Clark

Plano, Texas

Crossett, Arkansas

Andrew is starting his senior year at the University of Arkansas. In addition to his industrial engineering major, he has already completed a minor in music.

Cleondra’s love for engineering started when she was in middle school. She participated in a program called “GEE,” Girls Engaged in Engineering. The focus of the program was to illustrate to girls that engineering can be fun.

He has been a member of the university’s band program since his freshman year, because he is a firm believer in the importance of variety; “variety is the spice of life,” after all.

Andrew is very excited about completing his college education because of the career opportunities that will be available to him.

He hopes to find work in the transportation or travel industry because he has always been an enthusiast for traveling.

This is also why she chose to study at the University of Arkansas and she chose industrial engineering because of its mix of business and engineering, and the endless future job opportunities.

Cleondra is a member of the Arkansas Razorback Spirit Squads (Cheer), the PATH Program, and NSBE (National Society of Black Engineers).

In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with family and friends, watching movies, and running.

She is anxious to dive into her industrial engineering coursework!

Elisa Daniel

Springdale, Arkansas

In her time at the University of Arkansas, Elisa Daniel experimented with majoring in Animal Science or Interior Design, but she found her place in the Industrial Engineering Department. She will graduate in May 2019 with a B.S. in Industrial Engineering, and loves that she will have the skills to create efficient and effective work environments.

Kevin is a rising industrial engineering senior. Born in El Salvador, he moved to Springdale, Arkansas in 2000. He is the middle child of Ramon Diaz and Miriam Escobar.

In summer 2018 Elisa completed a co-op on the Process Engineering team at KeyTronic, EMS in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Her position with the company will continue until graduation in 2019.

Elisa is an active member of Ozark Country Endurance Riders, competing in endurance races on horseback in Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma. She hopes to be able to combine her passion for the equestrian industry and industrial engineering in an intuitive and progressive way in the future.

Along with being a full-time student, Kevin volunteers as a peer mentor in the First-Year Engineering Program and serves as the recruiting chair in the Phi Iota Alpha Fraternity. He is also working as an intern at Zebra Technologies in Bentonville, Arkansas.

Kevin says “One of the biggest reasons I chose industrial engineering was because my mother is an Architect, and my dad is a business owner. Industrial Engineering just seemed to take the best out of both their careers and put them into one.�

Thaddeus was born in Picayune, Mississippi and was raised in Northwest Arkansas. A junior industrial engineering student, he is the son of Federico and Gail Fidalgo.

Emily is a sophomore from Olathe, Kansas. As a freshman, she joined Alpha Chi Omega to be involved on campus. She also holds leadership positions for the St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Campus Ministry.

He says he chose to pursue industrial engineering because of it’s flexibility and potential to serve others and because it combines business with engineering.

The summer following her freshman year, she accepted an internship with Dassault Falcon. Along with majoring in industrial engineering, she plans to obtain a minor in psychology.

Planning to work in industry for few years, Thaddeus intends to eventually return to the University of Arkansas for graduate school.

He is a second-degree black belt in Taekwondo martial arts, likes to work out, read, fly fish and hit the waves.

Gabriel Figueroa

Prairie Grove, Arkansas

Gabriel is a soon-to-be sophomore student from Panama City, Panama. He’s the middle son of Agustin Figueroa and Yenny Correa.

Parker is a senior industrial engineering student from Prairie Grove, Arkansas. He is son of John and Lori Galligan and brother of Zak Galligan.

“Since middle school my goal was to be an agent of change in my country, I believed being an engineer would help me help others, so I decided to study industrial engineering as it combined my skills on science and math with my ambition to run a business or manage a big company. From childhood I have always felt intrigued by the STEM fields and how things could be done more efficiently. I want to be a leader for my country, to lead other people to a better life and improve manufacturing processes and international trade in my home country. I believe capable industrial engineers are what Panama needs in order to achieve its maximum economic potential. In the future I would like to study abroad in Europe and get a minor in management.”

Parker is the President of the student chapter of the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers. During the school year he works for Pratt & Whitney as a manufacturing engineering co-op and in summer 2018 he worked for Phillips 66 as a procurement intern.

When not studying in the Imhoff Study Center, he enjoys taking advantage of everything Northwest Arkansas has to offer; hiking, kayaking, and calling the hogs every Saturday in the fall.

Parker believes the University of Arkansas has provided him with the skills to succeed and he is confident that the opportunities and experiences he has had through the Industrial Engineering Department will to lead him to be successful in both life and industry.

Bria Garcia

Dallas, Texas

Bria was a member of the math honor society Mu Alpha Theta, student council, and played volleyball in high school. She credits playing volleyball for 12 years with teaching her to manage her time wisely, and to work with many different personalities.

Alexandra is a sophomore industrial engineering student from Dallas, Texas. She got involved early on campus by becoming a member of Phi Mu Fraternity, where she currently holds an appointed officer position, and by becoming an Honors College Ambassador. Since then, she has worked on campus as a supplemental instruction leader for Principles of Biology and a peer mentor for the College of Engineering.

When she graduated from high school, she wasn’t really sure what major she wanted to pursue. She was good at math and science, so the first major that came to mind was engineering. When she began her freshman year at the University of Araknsas, she thought chemical engineering would be her major but after learning more about the other engineering programs, she chose the Department of Industrial Engineering.

Bria is a member of the Alpha Delta Pi sorority, Alpha Lambda Delta (a freshman honor society), The Society of Collegiate Leadership and Achievement, The National Society of Leadership and Success, the Society of Women Engineers serving as the IT Manager, the student chapter of the Institute of Industrial & Systems Engineers serving as the Communications Chair, The Society of Collegiate Scholars, the Student Alumni Association, and Mortar Board (National Senior Honor Society).

She achieved the Chancellor’s List both semesters of her freshman year, both semesters of her sophomore year, and both semesters of her junior year. After graduation, she hopes to pursue her master’s in industrial engineering.

Alexandra is also involved in several student organizations including the Society for Women Engineers, Engineering World Health, Greek Life Facilitators, the Volunteer Action Committee, the Red Cross Student Organization, and will serve as president-elect for the student chapter of the Institute of Industrial & Systems Engineering in the 2018-2019 academic year.

Currently she is working on research to help improve medical decision making for congenital heart disease patients using artificial intelligence.

Alexandra spent her summer taking classes and traveling for her research.

Brianna Gomez

Brianna is a rising junior industrial engineering student from Tulsa, Oklahoma. Even as a child, Brianna performed well in math and science classes.

Fortunately, people around her noticed and helped guide her through pre-engineering courses in high school that would inevitably lead her to choose engineering as her major in college.

Oscar will be a senior in the fall of 2018. He chose industrial engineering because he grew up around a family business and innovation has always appealed to him. He is also pursuing a minor in Supply Chain Management.

She is an officer for the student chapter of the Institute of Industrial & Systems Engineers and an active member of the Society of Women Engineers. She is also apart of the Engineering Career Awareness Program and is a peer mentor for the First-Year Engineering Program.

As a first-generation college student, Brianna had a lot of obstacles in her way, but the University of Arkansas welcomed her with open arms and the College of Engineering has given her a family.

Brianna completed an internship with Hallmark Cards during summer 2018 and hopes the experience will guide her as she decides what she wants to do with her major.

He graduated from Siloam Springs High School where he has lived most of his life, although his family is originally from Mexico. Oscar is very rooted in his culture and traditions; he is sociable and loves challenging himself and others.

He hopes to work with small business and one day, possibly own one himself.

During his free time, he enjoys slowing down and thinking about his future as well as volunteering at the University. On weekends, he loves to hike and spend time with his family. When asked for words of inspiration he commented, “You can always mess up, but you can never give up.�

Morgan Hartsell

Morgan, daughter of Jeff and Brit Hartsell, just completed her junior year as an honors student in the Industrial Engineering Department, maintaining a 4.0 GPA.

Jillian is the daughter of Al and Lisa Hatfield of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. Jillian knew as soon as she arrived at the University of Arkansas she wanted to pursue an industrial engineering major, and has learned valuable knowledge and created lasting friendships within the department.

In addition to being a full-time student, Morgan is also a pole vaulter on the women’s track and field team and member of two national honor societies: Tau Beta Pi and Alpha Pi Mu. Currently she is researching the truck parking problem throughout the State of Arkansas in hopes of supplying truck drivers with adequate information to be able to abide by driving regulations and legal parking destinations. In summer 2017 and 2018 she worked as an engineering intern with J. B. Hunt.

Morgan is excited to see what the future holds and is determined to be a successful student and athlete. She is especially thankful for all those that have helped her along the way including her professors, scholarship donors, parents, and the Lord above.

In summer 2018 she completed an internship with NORDAM in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Jillian is an active member of the Razorback Swim Club and will serve as treasurer for the upcoming 2018-2019 swim season. She is also a member of the Society of Women Engineers and the Institute of Industrial & Systems Engineers.

Nicole Hayes

In addition to pursuing a major in Industrial Engineering, Nicole is also pursuing a minor in Spanish.

She is a native of Fayetteville growing up in a family of engineers, so her love for the Razorbacks and the University of Arkansas is deeply rooted.

Nate is a junior from Frontenac, Kansas. He plans to graduate in May 2019 and pursue a job in industry.

In May 2018 Nicole had the opportunity to study the sustainability of the Euro food system in Belgium and then returned to Fayetteville for the rest of the summer to work as a logistics engineer intern at J.B. Hunt.

She serves as chaplain of the Delta Delta Delta sorority, social chair of Alpha Pi Mu, and volunteers leading several different community groups within her church.

Nicole says she is excited to see how her engineering skills will help her impact the community around her in her career and life.

Born and raised in a town with a population of 3,500, Nate wanted to see what the world had to offer him and he has done just that during his time at the University of Arkansas.

Through a wide variety of experiences offered at the University, he has expanded his horizons and sharpened his skills to prepare him for a career in a globally-competitive market.

Nate is a member of Alpha Pi Mu and Tau Beta Pi honor societies, Beta Upsilon Chi fraternity, he volunteers on the media team at the U of A Wesley, and is the president of the Rotaract Club at the University of Arkansas.

He has studied abroad twice, participating in a servicelearning program in Mozambique, teaching poultry farmers about the importance of water sanitation. And participating in a semester exchange program with Jönköping University in Jönköping, Sweden.

Tylon Jackson

Little Rock, Arkansas

Born and raised in Little Rock, Arkansas, Tylon graduated from John L. McClellan High School in 2014.

Joy decided on engineering early in high school, but ultimately decided on industrial engineering in tenth grade.

He is involved in Student Support Services, the Academic Enrichment Program, Men of Distinction, and currently serves as the student president for National Society of Black Engineers. Tylon is also a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Incorporated.

His career aspirations consist of acquiring his bachelor’s degree and going to go work for a company that will allow him to utilize the knowledge and skills that he has developed to add value in numerous ways and showcase the true benefits of an industrial engineering education.

While working, Tylon plans to attend graduate school to obtain his master’s in business administration.

Ultimately, he would like to start his own real estate business and become a certified consultant.

In his spare time, Tylon loves to go to the gym, swim, volunteer, spend time with friends, and travel.

Her father holds degrees in both mechanical and industrial engineering from the University of Arkansas, her mother has a pharmaceutical degree from the University of Arkansas Medical Sciences, and her older brothers have degrees in biological and mechanical engineering, both from the University of Arkansas.

Joy has enjoyed her years at the University, and is ready to start applying her skills and giving back.

After completing her undergraduate degree, Joy would like to continue her education by pursuing a master’s in technical writing or economics. She would ultimately like to find a position in the Little Rock or Northwest Arkansas areas.

Her goal is to use her skills in engineering to benefit society in efficiency and productivity, while keeping true to her beliefs, ideals and work ethics.

Maria Rene Arandia Jimenez

Alexander “Zan” Johnson

Maria Rene is a sophomore student minoring in mathematics. She was born and raised in Bolivia and is the first person from her family to pursue a college degree in the United States.

Zan is a sophomore industrial engineering and economics major with a minor in mathematics. He is originally from Olathe, Kansas attending the University of Arkansas on the Honors College Fellowship.

She went to The American International School of Bolivia, where she was the class Valedictorian and successfully completed the International Baccalaureate Program, receiving the Bilingual Diploma. Maria Rene chose to continue her education at the University of Arkansas because of all the opportunities it offers to its students.

Zan serves as the chair of the Engagement Team for the Volunteer Action Center, director of University Philanthropy for the Associated Student Government, and as head of the Philanthropy and Community Service Committee for his fraternity. He is also a Resident Assistant in Founders Hall, President and Founder of the Running Club at the University of Arkansas, and an Honors College Ambassador.

She has achieved the Dean’s List each semester since starting at the University, and in spring 2017, achieved the Chancellor’s List.

Maria Rene is a member of the International Culture Team, where she shares important aspects of Bolivian culture with the Fayetteville community. She is also involved in many mentorship programs that help students adjust to college life at the University of Arkansas, such as the First-Year Engineering Program, where she works as a Peer Mentor, and International Student Orientation, where she volunteers as a CrossCultural Mentor.

Beginning in fall 2018, she will work for University Housing as a Resident Assistant. She is also in the Honors College and has just started doing research with Dr. Kelly M. Sullivan.

Maria Rene spent summer 2018 studying at the University of Arkansas Rome Center.

During summer 2018 Zan traveled to Dangriga, Belize where he worked on a combined engineering and economics project relating to poultry production.

In summer 2017 Zan studied abroad in Africa through a service learning opportunity in Nampula, Mozambique. During his time there he worked with the engineering team on a water quality project for a community-empowering company, Novos Horizontes or New Horizons. Working with time and budget constraints Zan and his team were able to create a water filtration process that is helping the company save thousands of liters of water per year.

John L. Imhoff Global Studies Scholarship - $2,000

Spencer Kilgore

La Paz, Bolivia

Spencer is the son of Kevin and Kristen Kilgore of Prairie Grove, and is the oldest of three children.

Esteban was born in La Paz, Bolivia, the son of Jose Luis Lopez and Velma Barrientos, both industrial engineers.

He graduated from San Ignacio School after doing a three-week long volunteering project with his class “Búfalos 2016” in Bolivia.

He is a member of Alpha Pi Mu, and has served as the Vice President of University of Arkansas student chapter for the Institute of Industrial & Systems Engineers. He believes these organizations provide a valuable supplement to the growth and education of students in the department and he feels serving with these organizations has helped him to create lasting relationships with faculty, staff, and his fellow peers.

Spencer interned with Halliburton in their Supply Chain Management Program in summer 2018.

He initially began his collegiate career as a biology major, but after switching into the Industrial Engineering Department in his sophomore year, he quickly felt at home. He believes that industrial engineering is a wonderful engineering discipline due to the diversity it offers with regard to possible career options, as well as the many opportunities it offers to make a positive impact on the world.

He traveled for the first time in August 2017 to begin his new life at the University of Arkansas. As a freshman, Esteban decided to pursue a degree in industrial engineering.

Currently he works for the Office of Student Activities and is a member of the Freshman Leadership Forum (FLF), a branch from the Associated Student Government (ASG).

Estaban was awarded with the “Golden Tusk,” an award given by the Division of Student Affairs to recognize those university members who go above and beyond for students and the campus community at-large.

Esteban is determined to be great industrial engineer and to help make a difference.

Laury Lopez

Marianna, Arkansas

Laury is the oldest daughter of Isaias Pitty and Marlin Lopez and was born and raised in Panama. She is a first generation student and the first engineer in her family.

Alicia is a single mother of three and aspires to become a project manager for the Homeland Security Operations and Intelligence Division.

In 2011, she received a full scholarship to study biomedical engineering at the University of Arkansas.

Before coming to the United States, she completed an eight-month intensive English course.

She will graduate in May 2019 and after graduation, plans to pursue her master’s in criminal justice online from Florida University.

She completed her bachelor’s degree in biomedical engineering in the spring of 2017, and started pursing her master’s degree in industrial engineering the following fall.

Laury said, “the transition from biomedical to industrial engineering was not easy, but the faculty and staff have been very welcoming. Carter is the son of the late Greg McDonald, and Robert and Angie Day. He lives in Springdale, Arkansas, but is originally from Magnolia, Arkansas.

Samuel is the son of Janet and Steve McKinney of Fenton, Missouri. He is considering a possible minor of computer science or supply chain management.

Carter has been a life-long Razorback fan, and it has been a dream come true for him to attend the University of Arkansas.

Samuel says he chose Industrial Engineering because of his passion for business, math, and problem solving.

He has decided to take advantage of the excellent business and engineering colleges by majoring in industrial engineering and minoring in business.

Carter is a member of the Honors College, Alpha Pi Mu, and the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineering.

In addition to his studies, he remains involved in the College of Engineering by serving as a First-Year Engineering Program Peer Mentor for incoming freshmen.

He intends to join to the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers along with a variety of other RSO’s in the coming years. Samuel shared, “being involved is important to me because it expands my knowledge outside of the classroom and makes me more of a wellrounded individual.”

In the future he would like to intern with a company in either the St. Louis area or Northwest Arkansas, and he hopes to pursue a study abroad opportunity.

Carlos is currently completing his M.S. in Industrial Engineering with a Graduate Certificate in Project Management.

Allison graduated from the University of Arkansas in May 2018 with a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering and a minor in finance.

Carlos’ areas of interest include project management, supply chain optimization, and industrial safety and ergonomics. He currently serves as teaching assistant for the Department’s undergraduate courses in Ergonomics and Methods & Standards.

She is originally from Lee’s Summit, Missouri, but fell in love with the University of Arkansas when she took a tour of it with her older sister in 2012.

Before joining the University of Arkansas, he completed his B.S. in Biomedical Engineering from The Ohio State University in 2016.

He has most recently interned with ThermoFisher Scientific in San Diego, working in global sourcing. He returned to ThermoFisher for summer 2018 to serve in a manufacturing setting in the Bay Area.

Allison is a member of Alpha Pi Mu, Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers, Society of Women Engineers, Society of Manufacturing Engineers, and Zeta Tau Alpha.

In March 2017, Allison was selected to be the Panhellenic Scholastic Woman of the Month out of nearly 4,000 girls.

Allison had an internship with John Deere as a performance and reliability engineer in the summer of 2017. In January 2018, Allison studied abroad in Vietnam where she worked on a marketing research project with other Arkansas students and local rice farmers.

In June, Allison started a full time position with Wells Fargo Securities as an investment banking analyst.

Eventually, Allison would like to return to school to persue an MBA. In her free time, Allison enjoys traveling, painting, and reading.

Erin was born and raised in Miami, Florida and began her graduate studies at the University of Arkansas in July of 2017.

Wesley is the proud husband of Alexandra and father of their son Wryder. He graduated from Seneca High School in Seneca, Missouri, in 2005. He was a member of the National Honor Society and graduated with honors.

Prior to becoming an industrial engineering student, she spent four years studying mathematics and architecture at a liberal arts college in western Massachusetts.

Since coming to the University of Arkansas, she has been able to indulge her interdisciplinary interests through her research in humanitarian logistics.

After a short time at Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg, Kansas and Crowder Community College in Neosho, Missouri, where he received an AA of Business Administration, Wesley began a career in the oil and gas industry.

Additionally, Erin has reveled in the various ways in which her mathematical skill set can be applied within the field of industrial engineering. With the guidance of Dr. Milburn, Erin has identified a channel by which she can apply her skills to advocate for communities in need.

Almost a decade since he last attended school, Wesley chose to continue his education at the University of Arkansas in pursuit of a more stable life for his family.

Joann is the daughter of Joe and Deb Peta of Colleyville, Texas. She is pursuing minors in mathematics and supply chain management.

Damon graduated from Parkview Arts & Science Magnet High School with honors in Little Rock, Arkansas and attended a community college before transferring to University of Arkansas.

Joann chose Industrial Engineering for her interest of math and statistics and also her love for interacting with people.

Joann is a member of the Society of Women Engineers and the sorority Alpha Chi Omega where she holds leadership positions of historian and newsletter chair.

In addition to being a full-time student, she also works as a lifeguard at the Health, Physical Education and Recreation building on campus.

She is extremely eager and determined to be a successful student, and feels receiving this scholarship would only help make that more possible.

Jaira graduated from Pulaski Academy and was a member of the National Honors Society, the National Beta Club, Mu Alpha Theta National Mathematics Honor Society, and a member of the Senior High Pom/Cheer Squad among other achievements and extracurricular activities.

Melissa is an Arkansas native, having grown up in West Memphis.

Since arriving at the University of Arkansas, Jaira has been active in the Engineering Career Awareness Program (ECAP), and at the end of her freshman year was elected to the position of Community Service Chair for the National Society for Black Engineers (NSBE). She is also a member of the Black Student Association (BSA), and Students Advocating Stronger Sisterhood (SASS).

Jaira looks forward to serving the University community by bringing the community and engineering together.

Paul will be starting his junior year in industrial engineering in the fall 2018 semester.

Dasher, daughter of Sam and Nancy Smith, is a junior industrial engineering student from Tulsa, Oklahoma and the fifth of seven children in her family.

He is from Joplin, Missouri, and chose to study at the University of Arkansas for its strategic location among large companies and employers, its outdoorsy atmosphere, and stellar academics.

Paul decided to major in industrial engineering because he is intrigued by the combination of utilizing engineering problem solving skills with diverse applications in business, medicine, and every sector of the economy.

He interned with J.B. Hunt in summer 2018 and was excited to have hands-on experience in the workforce.

Outside of the classroom, Paul is a member of Beta Upsilon Chi, Alpha Pi Mu, University Baptist Church, and enjoys hiking, kayaking, and playing the violin.

Kaitlin is the daughter of Sheri and Tracy Smithey from St. Louis, Missouri. She is pursuing a minor in supply chain management.

As a child Madison said traveling gave her a thrill. “I adored those mornings before the sun was up, as my family and I ran around the house throwing random items in over packed suitcases - this was the start to a new adventure! I imagine this summer on my study abroad trip to the U of A Rome Center, I will feel these same feelings, only intensified!”

She enjoys industrial engineering because of the broad opportunities it has to offer, and the combination of engineering and business.

She is a member of Alpha Pi Mu, the Institute of Industrial & Systems Engineers, and the Society of Women Engineers.

Kaitlin has completed internships at Nestle Purina, John Deere; and in summer 2018 with Boeing in St. Louis.

Owen says he is proud to call his hometown, North Little Rock, Arkansas. He is the son of Scott and Amanda Stuckey and just finished his freshman year.

Madeline is a sophomore pursuing a minor in business spanish. She decided to major in industrial engineering prior to arriving at the University of Arkansas because she not only wanted a challenge, but she also thrives on making things more efficient and working to save money.

He said it was the recommendation of his high school science and math teachers, that influenced his decision to pursue engineering.

Owen said the engineering classes he has completed have touched on all the different specialized engineering opportunities and disciplines. But ultimately he chose Industrial Engineering as his major because he just seemed to “fit” in this area. He loves to make things run efficiently, and he is a “people person” as well as a math and science guy.

In addition to his busy class and study schedule, he is involved in campus activities. He is a member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity, where made friends that he now considers family. He has participated in several fundraising events and put in multiple volunteer hours for their philanthropies, the ALS Association and the Cystic Fibrosis Association. Owen is also an active member of the Student Alumni Association.

An athlete in high school, he was worried that he would miss athletics in college, but he has found the University’s Intermural Sports program has satisfied his need to compete and is keeping him in good physical shape. Other hobbies he enjoys include traveling, water sports and snow skiing.

As the daughter of two social work majors and the sister of an education major, Madeline will be the first engineer in her family.

When she’s not studying, Madeline keeps busy with her sorority, Kappa Delta, where she serves as the Girl Scout Chair and a Panhellenic Delegate. In addition to her sorority, she is the VP of Volunteers for the RSO, Campus Civitan, a First-Year Engineering Program Peer Mentor, a Student Ambassador, and a volunteer at the Farmington Elementary Special Education Center.

Madeline hopes to study abroad in Sweden, to be immersed in a new culture and to see how industrial engineering varies between regions of the world.

As a relatively new member to the IE department, she looks forward to meeting the students and faculty and diving into her industrial engineering courses.

Jaclyn is a sophomore industrial engineering major with a planned minor in finance.

She is a member of the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers, Alpha Pi Mu, and the Society of Women Engineers.

Coming into college, Jaclyn was undecided whether a business or engineering degree would best fit her interests. After touring the Industrial Engineering Department she decided industrial engineering would be the perfect combination.

In fall 2018, Sierra will be studying at Jonkoping University in Sweden, and she is excited to experience a culture which is known for sustainability and ergonomic design. She imagines that meandering through IKEAs throughout her young life contributed to her interest in understanding the factors that make a design efficient and cost effective.

Matthew is pursuing a minor in mathematics. A highhonors graduate from Cabot, he has always loved learning and has a passion for mathematics.

Anna is a sophomore from Keller, Texas. In high school, she competed in “Team Financial Decision Making� with DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America) and placed in the top 12 in the State of Texas. Her passion for business began with this club, but she had always wanted to be an engineer.

Throughout high school, he knew that he wanted to go into the field of engineering but was uncertain of the specific discipline. Because of this uncertainty, Matthew felt the University of Arkansas offered the greatest opportunity to experience all fields of engineering.

After his first semester, it was abundantly clear which field he wanted to pursue. He chose industrial engineering because of the countless possibilities. He also appreciated that industrial engineering combined the problem-solving aspects of engineering with business and management.

During the department information sessions, she found her place in the Department of Industrial Engineering. She is now pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering and plans on graduating a year early. Anna enjoys industrial engineering because of the mix of engineering and business.

Conner is currently a sophomore at the University of Arkansas. He was born and raised in Cleona, Pennsylvania, but wanted to look for new opportunities. His pursuit led him to the industrial engineering program at the University of Arkansas.

Henley Wells is a junior from Charleston, Arkansas. He is an avid fan of all Razorback sports, but especially baseball—his favorite sport. He thoroughly enjoys keeping up with his favorite MLB team, the St. Louis Cardinals. His passion for baseball has led him to pursue undergraduate research with Dr. Ed Pohl in that area.

Before moving to Arkansas, Conner worked for two years as a CNC machinist, where he made precision metal parts for all kinds of structures - from parts for nuclear reactors to window frames for the empire state building. Working at this job taught him the value and responsibility of engineering.

With this scholarship, Conner plans to continue his high academic performance and hopes to find an internship for next summer.

He is currently working as an Resident Assistant on campus. He is also in the process of starting two small businesses back in Pennsylvania.

When he is not researching or watching sports, he enjoys bicycling and playing with his two dogs, Brody and Kayla.

Henley is also an active member of the University of Arkansas Cycling Club and the University of Arkansas Wesley Foundation where he serves on the leadership team.

Amie is a freshman industrial engineering student who was born and raised in Hot Springs, Arkansas.

Blake Yates is a senior industrial engineering student planning to graduate in the May of 2019. He is from Alma, Arkansas where he graduated in 2015 as Valedictorian of his class.

After graduating as Valedictorian of Fountain Lake High School, Amie pursued her interests in math and science by attending the University of Arkansas as an undecided engineering major.

Learning about the different disciplines of engineering through the First-Year Engineering Program, Amie quickly discovered that industrial engineering was the perfect major for her, because it combines important elements of both engineering and business.

This summer, Amie will be working as an intern at Arkansas Electric Cooperative in Little Rock, Arkansas.
