Conner chose to study Industrial Engineering for many reasons, but the most important factor was that it was a challenge, and one which would be a beneficial growing experience. Before moving to Arkansas, Conner worked for two years as a CNC machinist, where he made precision metal parts for all kinds of structures - from parts for nuclear reactors to window frames for the Empire State Building. Working at this job taught him the value and responsibility of engineering. He completed an internship with Michelin in Spartanburg, SC in the summer of 2019, and worked as a Supply Chain Management Intern with Walmart in summer 2020. Conner has also been working on a mobile application for people who like to travel and support local, small businesses, he is hoping that this project can one day grow large enough to be his main source of income. He had been considering doing chemical or biomedical. For the first couple of weeks of the second semester, he said he had it down to chemical or industrial. He shares, “There was something that intrigued me about industrial engineering more than the other disciplines, and I could not even name it.” Two weeks before decision day he figured out why he was so intrigued with industrial engineering. It was the focus on efficiency and making systems work as well and fast as they can is what he says pulled him in. “I realized that I do this with everything that I do!” he said. “My mom always told me that I would spend more time figuring out an easier way to do the job, than it would have taken to do it.” He said this “skill” that his mom hated finally had finally had a purpose and usefulness.
