1. REDUCE THE SIZE OF THE STATE COURT OF APPEALS

6. GET RID OF JUDICIAL ELECTIONS AND LET THE LEGISLATURE PICK JUDGES

Three formerly Republican seats on the Court of Appeals were soon to be vacant. Instead of allowing Governor Cooper to appoint replacements— Senate leader Phil Berger called that a “partisan court-packing scheme,” which is not quite correct in any historical sense—the legislature simply eliminated those seats.

Berger has endorsed this idea, and Governor Cooper expects it to be on the May ballot: a constitutional amendment to get rid of pesky elections entirely and just let the legislature (not the governor, of course) pick judges.

2. MAKE JUDICIAL ELECTIONS PARTISAN Last year, Mike Morgan squeaked his way onto the Supreme Court, racking up margins in several deepred counties where voters apparently didn’t realize he was an African-American Democrat. The legislature quickly took care of that, making Supreme Court— and later all judicial—elections partisan. We’re now the first state in nearly a century to move toward a partisan judiciary rather than away from it.

3. GERRYMANDER JUDICIAL DISTRICTS TO GIVE MORE INFLUENCE TO RURAL, CONSERVATIVE AREAS

Alongside our new partisan judiciary comes a plan to redraw judicial districts, double-bunking a bunch of African-American judges and ensuring that Republicans have more of a say on the bench by packing urban voters together. The state House approved the new maps earlier this month; the Senate will consider them next year.

5. END ALL JUDICIAL TERMS AT THE END OF 2018

To go along with the new partisan judiciary, Republicans have proposed putting a constitutional amendment on the ballot that would end all judicial terms at the end of the year, ensuring that every judge has to run for reelection next year. That is, assuming the legislature doesn’t get rid of judicial elections altogether.

4. ELIMINATE JUDICIAL PRIMARIES IN 2018

Since the legislature plans to gerrymander the courts next year, it can’t feasibly expect to have judicial primary elections in May. Instead, it eliminated judicial primaries, meaning the November ballot could be a free-for-all— with perhaps no one getting more than a small plurality.

The Durham City Council has expanded a grant program for residents whose property tax bills have gone up because of city-backed revitalization in their neighborhood.

A program aimed at helping Southside residents is slated to roll out November 1. The council voted last week to also include some northeast central Durham and southwest central Durham residents.

Grants will cover the difference between their 2015 and 2016 bills.

The initiative was created at the urging of Southside residents affected by new mixed-income housing the city helped to develop. A 2016 property revaluation saw tax bills there go up an average of $349, according to the city. (Homeowners must have lived in their homes since July 1, 2012, to qualify for the program.)

Some of those residents came to last Thursday’s work session after seeing the details of the grant program. Nancy Grave, a lifelong Southside resident, said her bill had tripled and she wouldn’t qualify for the program under the program’s original terms.

Grave and other residents were particularly concerned about a requirement that recipients earn no more than 60 percent of the area median income, $42,420 for a family of four.

City staffers estimated that out of 133 residences that saw a tax increases, just 20 would be eligible. In response, the council unanimously raised the threshold to 80 percent of the area median income.

PERIPHERAL VISIONS | V.C. ROGERS

The council voted unanimously to expand the program to northeast central and southwest central Durham but split on whether to extend it from a one-year to a three-year program. Council members Charlie Reece, Jillian Johnson, and Steve Schewel voted against the extension but were overruled.

“We don’t know enough to make a threeyear decision on this,” said Schewel, a candidate for mayor.

The council also split on whether to have residents pay 10 percent of their tax increase to rein in administrative costs.

Schewel and outgoing council members Don Moffitt and Eddie Davis voted in favor of making residents pay—which the city staff thought was a reasonable measure— but they were outvoted.

Marie Hunter, who has lived in Southside for sixty-six years, said she and her neighbors have been asking for relief for nearly two years and will continue to push for help on behalf of other city residents.

“You’ve got to get something right for the whole city,” she told the council.

“Until you can do that, you’re going to have problems.”

+HOG MONEY

On October 12, a Wake County judge ruled against a lawsuit filed last year by Francis De Luca, the president of the conservative Civitas Institute, over a 2000 settlement between Smithfield Foods and the state to fund a multimillion-dollar experiment to find more sustainable methods of disposing of hog waste.

Filed last October, the lawsuit claimed that then-attorney general Roy Cooper had illegally diverted money from public schools.

The money at the center of the lawsuit was the result of the so-called Smithfield Agreement, in which former attorney general Mike Easley made a deal with pork giant Smithfield requiring the company to invest tens of millions of dollars into environmentally superior waste management technologies.

The dispute boiled down to whether the agreement constituted a state fine. If it did, then state law mandated that the proceeds should be put into the Civil Penalty and Forfeiture Fund and then routed to schools, rather than being dedicated to environmental improvements.

The state, however, countered that the agreement wasn’t made in lieu of penalties or fines and wasn’t triggered by an enforcement action.

De Luca’s argument failed to sway Wake County Superior Court Judge Paul Ridgeway, who concluded that the plaintiffs, including De Luca, have “failed to meet their burden of establishing their own entitlement to judgement or to forecast the existence of facts that support their claim or that rises to the level of creating a genuine issue of fact.”

“Overwhelming, Complicated, Messy” WAKE COUNTY WANTS TO MAKE ITS SYSTEM FOR TREATING PEOPLE WITH MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES MORE EFFICIENT—AND LESS COSTLY BY THOMAS GOLDSMITH

It’s easy to blame people who are dealing with mental illness. But the road to recovery is more often like a series of paths through a forest, sometimes connecting, often not touching, and too frequently leading the person needing help in the wrong direction.

Brian Klausner, an internist at WakeMed, pointed this out at a recent Wake County Behavioral Health Summit, referencing as an example a woman staying beneath a bridge, self-medicating her psychiatric disorder with heroin.

“It’s easy, it’s lazy, but it’s convenient for us to blame the patient,” Klausner said. The existing system, he added, is “overwhelming, complicated, and messy.”

The meeting, held last Thursday at the Raleigh Convention Center, brought together more than two hundred professionals, government officials, activists, and others. Their goal: to knit into a cohesive whole the array of services to help people in Wake County with mental illness.

As part of that effort, assistant county manager Denise Foreman presented a series of conclusions drawn from studies

by SAS, the multibillion-dollar software and data company, and N.C. State.

Handling these cases in a more proactive, cost-effective manner could save significant money, according to outgoing county manager Jim Hartmann and Board of Commissioners chairman Sig Hutchinson. For example, providing supportive housing for a person with mental illness costs far less than caring for him in jail. And it’s great to prescribe treatment for someone, but that person needs reliable transportation to make her appointments.

Analyses by SAS and N.C. State of hundreds of people with mental illnesses treated by Wake County have opened up new possibilities for coordinating care and information, ideally resulting in better health results and lower costs.

N.C. State found that 25 percent of people admitted to the county jail have mental health diagnoses, and those inmates tend 8 | 10.25.17 | INDYweek.com

to stay behind bars longer. In addition, about a third of those inmates have both mental illness and substance abuse issues.

They often receive treatment for one or the other, but not both.

The SAS study found that 807 people during an eighteen-month period came in contact with one of the three high-cost systems: jail, EMS, and homeless shelters.

“Analysis of these 807 individuals shows that this group is between 26 and 55 years old (70 percent) and predominantly male (75 percent),” according to information supplied to summit participants. “Black or African-American males are disproportionately represented (46 percent) in this population.”

More than fifty-two hundred both spent time in jail and required help from EMS workers.

One of Wake County’s approaches, Foreman said, is to reduce interactions of the mentally ill with the criminal justice system. That can involve diverting someone who’s been detained to treatment instead of the detention center.

“If they do get convicted, we’d like to reduce the chances of their coming back into the system,” she said.

Wake County spends about $27 million annually on behavioral health, mostly for crisis services. District Attorney Lorrin Freeman said records show that most peo-

ple with behavioral problems who land in jail generally aren’t charged with murder, rape, or other violent offenses, but with low-level, nonviolent offenses. Indeed, according to SAS, more than 70 percent of people who encounter jail, EMS, and behavioral health services are booked for misdemeanor charges.

With help coming from different levels of government, nonprofits, and the business community, it’s common for a person with mental health problems to get lost in a bureaucratic maze, participants said.

“We want for there to be no wrong door,” said Katherine Hobbs Knutson, chief medical officer at Alliance Behavioral Healthcare. “There should be a seamless path to get to the right treatment at the right time.”

Wake County pays Alliance to take care of residents with behavioral health problems. The nonprofit’s officials say it would cost more than $180 million to treat people who need care at the level prescribed

by Medicaid, the federal health program for low-income people and those with disabilities.

Participants hope that these types of studies can continue—and they’d like to broaden their scope. For example, hospitals that play a major role in treatment couldn’t submit data because of federal HIPAA regulations.

Jennifer Conner, who works in local government solutions for SAS, said the company worked on the study with the help of Wake County Directors, a broad-based ad hoc group that includes former commissioner Carolina Sullivan, Freeman, Sheriff Donnie Harrison, Raleigh and its police department, many other Wake departments, and representatives of Alliance.

UNC REX, Duke, and WakeMed also provided expertise, Conner said.

“The reasons we wanted to have the hospitals in behavioral health is that they are among the stakeholders,” Conner said. “We hope we can bring them in, and the data they have, to enrich the findings.” tgoldsmith@indyweek.com

Missed the Bus

WITH DUKE UNIVERSITY PULLING ITS FUNDING, WHAT’S THE FUTURE OF THE BULL CITY CONNECTOR?

BY SARAH WILLETS Since 2010, the fare-free Bull City Connector has pinged from downtown Durham to Duke University, connecting the VA medical center, Duke’s campus, shopping, dining, and government services.

Now, amid funding changes and a study of Durham’s transit needs, there’s uncertainty about the service’s future.

That uncertainty comes on two fronts.

First, Duke University has announced plans to cease funding for the route beginning in fiscal year 2018. Second, GoTriangle and GoDurham are reexamining all of their routes with potential changes in mind.

GoTriangle is currently taking public comments as part of its transit study, and the Durham City Council will likely be briefed on that study before the end of the year.

GoTriangle and the city say no decisions have been made to alter or discontinue the BCC, but concerns remain over how the service will look going forward. These concerns stretch back to 2015, when several stops (including Durham Station, the BCC’s busiest stop) were eliminated in the name of efficiency, while more stops were added near Duke.

“That’s what I kept hearing about these changes: we want to be more efficient. But are we throwing away effectiveness for efficiency?” asks Nikki Brown of the nonprofit SpiritHouse, who documented hazards on the route after the 2015 changes.

SpiritHouse took those findings to the Durham Human Relations Commission, which issued three recommendations last year: restore service to Durham Station, restore service to clinics at Duke South, and “focus on serving the Durham community, not primarily Duke.”

“We’re still concerned about the changes that were made in 2015,” says HRC chairwoman Diane Standaert.

At the time, BCC riders were slightly older than the overall GoDurham ridership, 52 percent of BCC riders earned less than $15,000 per year, and 57 percent were Afri-

can American. Most used the service to get to work or school, as well as appointments at the VA and Duke Hospital.

Terry Bellamy, the city’s transportation director, says the route, stops, and operating hours will be considered in the context of the larger bus system. “The question we’re asking the public as we do the study is where is the service demand?” Bellamy says. “So much has happened in the last two years that there could be changes in demand.”

In the past, the city has covered about two-thirds of the $1.1 million annual bill for the BCC, with Duke contributing the other third. However, this fiscal year the university cut its funding in half, to $175,000, and indicated that would be its final allotment.

Phail Wynn Jr., vice president of Durham and Regional Affairs at Duke, says the university began funding the BCC in conjunction with grants to get the system running.

“It was never intended to be an indefinite commitment,” Wynn says.

Now, the BCC isn’t providing Duke students and faculty with adequate service, Wynn says. “To operate these new needs would probably triple the cost of the route.

We found it would actually be cheaper for Duke to go ahead and run our own shuttles from the campus to downtown and back.”

Standaert and Brown would like to see the service better serve riders who really need a fare-free bus. Brown questions why the route doesn’t go to lower-income neighborhoods in east Durham or to N.C. Central.

“Are we being equitable?” Brown says. “Are we being the people that we say we are?”

Asked whether the BCC could be discontinued, Bellamy says it’s too early to tell: “We don’t know the answer to that question yet.

That’s what the study process will tell us. I really want to hear from a lot of the users.”

The Icing on the Cake LITTLE LESSONS ON FROSTING (AND MORE) AT BIG BUNDTS

In the past month, I’ve been in a VIP lounge at a food festival in South Carolina and a cake lounge in Durham.

And I’ve got to say, while VIP-ing is pretty groovy, I’d rather spend my time in a cake lounge.

Because cake.

Every so often, I’ll use my curiosity as a food writer to appeal to a food-based enterprise for permission to visit for a “play date.”

This is where I invite myself over to tinker around in the kitchen and learn from a chef. And since most culinary people were born with a freakish generosity, they almost always say yes. I’ve hung out in the middle of the night with bakers at Guglhupf in Durham, filleted fish at the Carolina Inn, and stirred grits at Vimala’s Curryblossom Cafe in Chapel Hill.

For this cake tale to make sense, there’s something you should know about me. My two favorite foods are potato salad and birthday cake. And I mean a birthday cake with an overabundance of sweet, gooey frosting. A well-iced cake has at least a 1:3 ratio of frosting to cake (and more is always better until there is no cake left in the equation; then it just gets a little sad).

In a pretty little brushed-silver building on Broad Street, there’s a bakery called BIG Bundts & More. When I saw it the first time, I was interested, but not overly so, because I associate bundt cake with dry, boring slices passed out by fussy old ladies in the fellowship hall after Sunday church services.

But these are not your great-aunt Myrtle’s bundts. BIG Bundts come in three sizes: large, medium, and bundt bites. My favorite is the chocolate bite. It is crazy-moist with tons of serious, no-foolin’ chocolate flavor.

It’s not conventionally frosted but has a generous dollop of thick, fudgy glaze.

One visit—and this fudge—had me so undone that I literally forgot I had a family.

When I remembered, I begrudgingly chose a few items to bring back to those confectionary interlopers to whom I’m related.

But how cool is it to be in a business where you become part of something so sweet and momentous?

The bakers are used to this sort of thing, but they gather around the envelope excitedly.

Then Collier takes me under his wing. I roll up my sleeves and get to work.

We coat, drizzle, and sprinkle. One thing I’ve always loved about BIG Bundts has not changed.

All the lemon cake balls, squares, and bundts sport a tiny pink sugar heart. It’s a cute candy beauty mark that I’d miss if it weren’t there.

WITH HIS LABEL, HOT RELEASES, RYAN MARTIN HAS MADE A HOME FOR FAR-OUT MUSIC FOR NEARLY A DECADE

“I

don’t like the term ‘promoter’ that much,” explains Ryan Martin. He’s awake and on the phone, fresh from sleeping off a long drive back to his home in Chapel Hill after playing a short run of East Coast dates under his Secret Boyfriend alias.

We joke about the coke-bro music marketing stereotypes the word “promoter” can imply.

It’s unsurprising to hear Martin, a longtime organizer in the Triangle’s experimental music scene, deflect the word and its associations, given what he values in music and music communities.

Those values are front and center with Hot Releases, the amorphous label that Martin has run since 2008. Martin has slowly expanded the initially noise-focused label to include releases charting the porous boundaries of drone, sludge rock, experimental pop, coldwave, psych-folk, and a slew of other atypical zones. Like most of his pursuits, Hot Releases is a natural extension of Martin’s immeasurably strange taste and remarkable skill at grassroots community building.

Local adventurous types might know Martin as the main presence behind the anarchic Savage Weekend, a twoday, eighty-act festival held annually in May, which has grown into a weird family reunion of sorts and one of the East Coast’s larger noise events. Appropriately, Martin is ringing his label’s anniversary in with a two-day party at Nightlight comprising twenty-something national and local artists. In the last nine years, he’s released records or booked shows for almost all of them.

“Most of Hot Releases came from doing shows and meeting a lot of people who were quietly killing it who I wanted to help out.

For most of these records, things happened organically,” Martin says.

Yet, for such a varied and outré discography, Martin’s imprint hides in plain sight, under a comically unassuming moniker taken in part from a sign at a video

Hot Releases’ Ryan Martin PHOTO BY LENA SHKODA store that he used to frequent. Martin used it as a placeholder and just never came up with a better name, he says. In the beginning, it primarily served as an outpost for his own warped, handcrafted releases as Secret Boyfriend.

Over time, it grew to include other national artists, including Carlos Gonzales, aka Russian Tsarlag. Gonzales is a prolific musician who has grown into something of an underground cult figure in the last decade, thanks to his atmospheric, idiosyncratic take on lo-fi songwriting. For Martin’s own genremelting sensibilities, he was an instant fit.

Hot Releases put out Russian Tsarlag’s third album in 2009, and the two have frequently collaborated and toured together ever since.

Thanks to Martin’s ever-expanding connections, he quickly filled the Hot Releases catalog with intriguing records: LPs by Italian industrial pioneer Maurizio Bianchi and electropop jams from the excellent, now-defunct VVAQRT. Before an eventual rerelease by Mexican Summer in 2013, Hot Releases first reissued Static Crash, from Greensboro dreampop icons Ashrae Fax, on vinyl in 2011. “It used to be easier back in the late 2000s,” Martin says. “Back then, I could go to certain forums like Chondritic Sound and post about the tape and know a certain amount of people would buy them. Things are a lot different now.”

He mentions the resurgence of tapes and vinyl as boutique objects and predicts that CDs will eventually make a comeback.

Will longtime experimental labels like Hot Releases be putting out CD-Rs again eventually? Who knows, but a lot happened in the past nine years. Time will tell what another nine will bring. music@indyweek.com

“I don’t read many popular music blogs or keep up with internet trends or anything like that,” he says.

His goal is to put out the music he likes— often offbeat things that other labels won’t take risks on—rather than seek releases that will move product. Are there more reissues or tentpole artist releases coming, then?

Martin says probably not. As he points out, the releases from Bianchi sold very well and likely brought a bit of international attention to the label, but reissuing and putting out larger records from established figures doesn’t always seem worth the sweat to him.

He would rather focus his efforts on those who could use the help.

“Putting out well-known limited-release records that sell out instantly is cool but can feel kind of empty,” Martin says.

Beyond this weekend’s anniversary celebrations, Martin still plans to keep releasing music. Naturally, his business has changed a little since 2008: he now has

mentalists Unicorn Hard-On and Container, would later be canonized by Resident Advisor as an early document of the socalled “technoise” movement. As Martin goes through the discography over the phone, he sounds excited at each new item on the list, as the memories of each release flood back to him. Asked about his recent favorites, he cites the Montreal art punk band Gashrat as an example of a band he caught live and knew right away he wanted to work with. He mentions that picking favorites can be difficult when he curates everything to begin with.

Martin makes it clear that he wanted Hot Releases to be more than just a noise label, but he’s quick to point out that he has a great deal of respect for labels that “really go down the hole into one thing.” It’s a tricky line to walk for any label—do you sell directly to your audience, or take artful risks that might alienate them? Martin’s considerations have little to do with finances or trends.

VARIOUS ARTISTS Hot Comp Hot Releases HHH1/2

Life’s unpredictability is a plus for Hot Releases. The experimental label’s ninthanniversary compilation is an unprecedented exploration in both idea and execution, from the people who make it to what they make—and how they make it, too. Analog-digital lines are so blurred on Hot Comp that, outside of the context of a live performance, it’s difficult to discern what’s being done to make any given sound. “Marginal musics and peripheral visions” is the only official description the label gives to Hot Comp, leaving the task of discovery to the listener.

The set opens with Patrick Gallagher, who offers visceral noise via guitar manipulation. For the full-body experience, listen to it through headphones. It takes advantage of surround sound in a way that messes with your depth perception and makes you feel bombarded: explosions, rampages, chaos, and carnage all surround you, and it

feels as if you’ve entered a new 3-D space in the middle of an alien invasion.

After a fast-tempo rocker by Cube, Providence, Rhode Island, electronic artist Virusse steps in with an airy guitar track that showcases the artist’s and the album’s versatility. Like the fog off a mountain first clearing, “Rosemary” is so wispy that you have to strain to grasp the words before they disappear. Her vocal range lends well to this folky song and mountain tale, rife with verdant outdoors imagery. i_like_dog_face, who’s a Nightlight frequent flyer, gives us some time to reflect with the modular “Enigmatic Smile,” which brings to mind flutes, clarinets, and gentle drums. On “Celadon,” Naga’s choir-like vocals alongside simple keys take you to church in your Sunday best—but no sooner than it starts does the melody end. The song suddenly becomes spooky, as if the singer has died and returned as a ghost.

With percussion-like clinking chains and intermittent electronic pitches, this one goes in the horror category, which fits much of the rest of Hot Comp. No wonder its release is so close to Halloween.

Further along, Chucha’s “When Its Time” is a slow-moving tidal wave of auditory calm, delivering daydreams for wandering minds. But Hot Comp soon takes a hard turn with Housefire’s “lifeisbutadream,” where it pivots toward a nightmare. It’s Frankensteinian noise, an overexposed feedback disaster. In addition to conveying a whirlwind of moods, these jolting shifts in sound structure between each song are done with intentionality and precision. Smooth transitions through rough waters make the compilation complete. Hot Releases has something for every moment and mood in your life, and Hot Comp takes a romp through almost all of them. —Katie Hjerpe

n 1969, the world of rock ’n’ roll was shattered by the heavy, progressive sound of King Crimson. Following a legendary gig in Hyde Park where the band blew away the Rolling Stones, King Crimson toured the U.S. before imploding due to personality clashes and artistic differences. The band re-formed and played until 1975, when it entered another period of dormancy. In 1981, founding guitarist Robert Fripp reconvened the band, using bassist Tony Levin as the foundation for further attempts at moving rock into the future. The noirish, dystopian sound of the eighties lineup was a perfect match for the darkness of the Reagan/Thatcher era.

Beyond King Crimson, you’ve almost certainly heard Tony Levin’s playing, even if you don’t know it. He is the bass player for all of Peter Gabriel’s solo albums and appears on Alice Cooper’s first three records. He’s played with David Bowie, John Lennon, Pink Floyd, Paul Simon, and has appeared on hundreds of other landmark LPs over the years.

Now in its forty-eighth year of business, the band stops in Raleigh on Thursday with an eight-person lineup featuring Levin at its core. Levin took a break from a recording session near his home in Woodstock, New York, to discuss his continued role in the band.

INDY: You attended Eastman School of Music for classical studies. How did that affect your approach your playing?

TONY LEVIN: I was at Eastman and playing in the Rochester Philharmonic. I wasn’t that thrilled being in an orchestra. I started playing jazz, and soon after, rock. I moved to New York City back when there was a need for studio players, but what I really liked to do was play live shows on the road. I’ve done an awful lot of records, and I didn’t dislike doing the records, but my true joy and love is playing rock shows and sharing that experience with the audience.

When did you meet Robert Fripp? How did you get the King Crimson connection?

My memory is not great, but that’s easy to answer, because on the same day I met Peter Gabriel, I met Robert Fripp. It was July 1976, and Peter was doing his first solo album.

He had just left Genesis and [producer] Bob Ezrin, who liked my playing and had used me on Alice Cooper and Lou Reed records, joined me up with Peter. I did not know Peter, I did not know Genesis, I did not know King Crimson. It was an extraordinary day for me.

I’m still very engaged with making music with both after all these years.

When you joined King Crimson in 1981, the songwriting credits switched from individuals to the collective “Music by King Crimson.” How does the writing process work in the band?

It was different on each song, but generally Robert would bring in a piece or Adrian [Belew] would. It was pretty rare that Bill Bruford or I brought one in. The piece could be pretty done or it could have room for exploration and “Crimsonizing” it. One of the principles Robert introduced me to in running a band was to share the publishing equally. I don’t really love talking about the business side of music. The making of music is what I love, and that incarnation of King Crimson in the early eighties really pushed me to challenge myself as a player, something I’ve been doing ever since, and that to me is more important than all the publishing in the world.

The music on those eighties albums sounds so different than other music at the time.

It’s very forward looking, with the musicianship being in service to the music, not the other way around.

That’s what we’re trying to do. With Crimson, we were trying to actually be progressive, and not do what we had done before.

We’re still busy trying to not do what we did before. That’s not to say we’re always successful, but that’s the adventure.

Let’s talk about the current tour—you have an eight-person band for this run?

Yeah, we have three drummers. They worked out very elaborate strategies to break up the already complex drum parts.

We have Mel Collins playing flutes and saxes—he was in a much earlier incarnation of King Crimson. We also have at times three people playing keyboards, which gives us a bigger palette of sound, more orchestral. It’s hard to describe in detail the way the band will sound. If we’re allowed, we’ll play three hours with an intermission.

You’ve been interacting with fans through the internet since 1996. How has that changed for you over the years?

I started the website in the mid-nineties mainly to sell my solo records, but I quickly realized something wonderful was going on. People were coming to my site to notice what I had said about being behind the scenes at rock shows or even better, taking pictures of them. I stopped trying to sell records and I just made it what later became a blog—there was no such word then. I mostly use it just to communicate.

It’s a shame there’s a wall between us, which does not happen when I play in smaller rock bands, we just go out and say hi to everybody after the show. But with King Crimson, with Peter Gabriel, we do big shows and you just can’t say hi to everyone after the show, so there’s this unnecessary wall, and my website has taken down a little bit of that, eliminating some of the distance that we don’t really need to have.

What are you currently listening to?

My listening time seems to mostly be doing homework, things I need to learn for upcoming tours. Otherwise, it’s very likely to be classical music, just to take my mind off the rock scene and put me in a good place to write. In King Crimson, there is a tremendous amount of homework. We have a gigantic catalog now that we play.

Next week, we’re going to be rehearsing and we’re going to add other material, either new or from classic Crimson that I have never played. I need to be up on that and I need to get back to what we did on the last leg of the tour. It does involve some homework.

I could see Robert Fripp as an unhappy schoolmaster.

[Laughs] When we got out of school, we thought we were done doing homework, but it’s different. It’s something you love.

AL RIGGS

Hell House Bull City Records Presents HHHH Al Riggs decided to name his record Hell House, but he also decided, it seems, to make a sonic home blanketed with gentle acoustic guitars, cushioned with mic fuzz, and carpeted with the soft patter of percussive shakers, rather than a home engulfed in noisy inferno.

Riggs has said that part of the impetus for his latest record was living in a punk house in Chapel Hill last year, and the accompanying dissonance of being an introvert suddenly thrust into the midst of a network of musical communities.

This period of life—which began shortly before Donald Trump was elected president—may be specifically what the title alludes to, or it may refer to a more abstract conception of a tormented mental state. In any case, Riggs’s songs sound anything but hellish, and lack any sense of doom or despair. Rather, these songs invite and uplift, and even as they convey sorrow, act as channels for catharsis.

Opening track “Go When You’re Lonesome” carries a certain sadness but also offers encouragement in the form of “a room to go when you’re lonesome”—an earnest lyric led by carefully plucked guitar lines. “Christmas Parade” is a simple, bouncy number based around raggedy drums, acoustic guitar strums, and a sentimental tale of being invited to an annual holiday parade. Even “Burning Next Door,” one of Hell House’s more ominously titled songs, begins and ends with a celestial mélange of effects-laden saxophones.

“Let’s have a room full of friends with it,” Riggs talk-sings on “Let’s Have a Room.”

He does so with resolve, following the line shortly thereafter with, “If you need some air, go get it,” as if to say, “This Hell House is filling with smoke, maybe you just need to step outside.” Riggs's latest is an offering of solace, a safe house built in reaction to time spent in a darker domain.

The melodies are sometimes faint, the instrumentation sometimes sparse, but all the more welcoming in being so.

he thing on the floor skittered toward me grotesquely, its walk half-crab, half-spider. I didn’t think it could see; its milky white eyes were nearly the same shade as its sunless skin. But its hearing and sense of smell were clearly sharp as it cocked its head and sniffed the air, trying to locate its prey—me. I’d just solved a cryptogram from clues that had been scattered about the room, but so what? It had me cornered now, and the once-human creature grinned hideously as it slithered in my direction.

“Leg meat! Over here! Juicy, juicy leg meat!” yelled the Thin Man, my ally, hiking up a trouser leg as he tried to distract the drooling beast. Surprisingly, the ploy worked. The creature whipped its head around, growled, and crawled his way as I spun the combination lock, opened the drawer, and retrieved a precious key. But the hellion heard my progress and stopped. The room went still as the monster gracefully arced its left leg through the air and, gently but deliberately, closed the drawer with its foot.

“Just my luck,” I thought. “A zombie who likes to play with its food.” I’d seen immersive theater before. But Trapped in a Room with a Zombie at Raleigh Room Escapes had just taken it to another level.

our only options for spooky thrills. Theater, film, radio, and television followed, but they always kept their dark visions on the other side of technical or aesthetic divides. Haunted house attractions seemed to flirt with that border, but offered no real agency to those who went through them. But in recent years, first-person video games, virtual reality apps, and experiments in increasingly interactive theater forms, like Punchdrunk’s Sleep No More, have all but removed those barricades.

Since 2015, an unlikely group on Brookside Drive in Raleigh has been quietly elevating room escape games, which are plentiful in the Triangle but usually emphasize play over art, into the realm of immersive theater, in original, thrilling encounters that run forty-five minutes to an hour. Raleigh Room Escapes co-owner Rachel Carmichael says that instead of conventional performances that look in on the stories of others, they wanted to let people create their own.

“We offer the skeleton, so to speak, and they flesh it out,” she says. “Rather than watch someone they don’t know have an experience, they experience it themselves.”

When a family of theater veterans crafts a series of room escapes, the difference from the norm is evident. In Trapped in a Room with a Zombie, talented local actors plunge us into the world of their narrative, and we

become its extremely active protagonists.

Our preliminary briefing establishes ground rules and sets the stage, as Jill Cromwell— who also did the makeup design on our zombie, Sarah Moats—digs into the morbid humor of a ruthless, sexy Soviet scien-

tist who has recruited us as guinea pigs to observe her chained, zombified former colleague’s behavior in our presence.

Equally dramatic scenarios await in the group’s other adventures. It’s said that no plant life grows at the Devil’s Tramping Ground, the famous Caswell County urban legend site. But in Escape the Tramping Ground, samples taken from its surroundings have turned a biology lab into a green, leafy hell. With the site under quarantine, a military attaché to the UN’s World Health Organization gives us our orders: go in, learn the fate of the research biologists, find the research and soil samples that might check the demonic overgrowth, and then get out before they incinerate the place.

And in Stronghold, a sales tour of an intimate—and airtight—state-of-the-art security bunker goes sideways when its computerized interface malfunctions, leaving us locked inside with forty-five minutes of air to make necessary repairs.

While setting, lighting, props and sound design are all important parts of the experience, narrative is key for co-owner J. Robert Raines, building a story that organically sets the stakes and drives the action beyond merely solving puzzles for their own sake.

Raines and Carmichael think such innovations are part of a necessary evolution, both for room escapes and the theater.

“This is where we believe theater should be heading if it’s to stay alive,” Carmichael says. “Remove the fourth wall and make each person a part of the story.”

The numbers suggest no shortage of patrons who want that experience. Two and a half years after opening, Raleigh Room Escapes has more than doubled its weekly number of shows, and it triples them during holidays. To combat the one-and-done tendencies typical in the genre, the company will close for a month in January to create new shows and change and renovate existing ones.

“We’ll have new characters, new puzzles, new set designs, and a new layout. We’re gutting the entire warehouse,” Raines says.

He’s particularly gleeful about the next iteration of Trapped in a Room with a Zombie.

The creature won’t be chained in it. I make an entry in my mental datebook for February 2018.

AS THE N.C. BOXING SCENE GROWS, A BOXING WRITER FINDS IT'S STILL NOT EASY TO BE A FEMALE FAN

“W

e’re in a funky area, you know,” Paul Marinaccio tells me with a

resigned shrug.

It’s October 19, and people are filling the balcony of the Durham Armory to watch Thursday Night Fights: eight rounds of the sweet science, the warrior’s game, boxing.

Around us, Corona “ring girls” double as servers, wearing aprons over their bikinis, selling beer and bottled water. Later, they’ll stride through the ring between rounds, sans aprons, displaying the round number.

Boxing, simultaneously violent and confusing, can be a tough sell to newcomers.

It has a gladiatorial mano-a-mano aspect, but it’s not as brutal as mixed martial arts.

There are knockouts, but there are also bouts judged by decision, and the judging process is closed and complex. There’s no single national governing body, so local bouts are organized locally and don’t have the glossy seamlessness of boxing on TV. Music cues go awry, venue lights turn off at the wrong time, fighters show up late, and pauses between bouts drag on and on.

Despite this, the individualism of boxing is a thrill to watch. Once that bell rings, it’s just two men—almost always men—against each other. To see it in person is to hear the hush fall over the crowd, so quiet that a hook to the ribcage reverberates with a dull thud. It’s raw and remarkable.

But to be a woman and a fan of boxing, as I am, is to acknowledge that this sport

is built on a foundation of proving one’s strength and masculinity through an assertion of violence, as I and the photographer I’m working with will be unpleasantly reminded later tonight.

Marinaccio, a former heavyweight boxer, is light middleweight Donnie Marshall’s manager. They work out of Jawbreaker Boxing in Raleigh, where I once trained as an amateur. Marinaccio admits it’s not easy to fill seats for boxing venues in North Carolina.

“But,” he says, “people will sleep in tents for basketball.”

He’s right: we love our team sports in North Carolina, so much that Duke fans build their tent city in Krzyzewskiville to get UNC-Duke basketball tickets. North

Carolina sports fans crave affiliation with institutions that exist beyond the people who populate them. Unfortunately for promoters, boxers have themselves, and that’s it.

Most attendees I speak with have personal relationships with the fighters: friends, family members, neighbors, fellow gym rats. The Armory balcony, where tickets are cheapest, is nearly full, but the floor seats and “ringside” (the first two rows of floor seats) are only about half full, perhaps due to the steep $50 and $75 prices, respectively.

Marinaccio’s client, Marshall, is originally from Buffalo and moved to Raleigh to work and train about two years ago. Boxing’s more competitive in New York, Marshall admits, but it’s getting better in North Carolina, mostly thanks to a new insurance law in New York that requires promoters to insure each fighter for $1 million apiece.

This is doable for big-name fights but nearly impossible for local boxers working with small promoters and teams. This has led

to more travel for talented boxers. Instead of New York being the boxing destination where guys go to test their chops, they’re fighting in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and all the way down in North Carolina.

“But they’re changing it back in January,” Marshall says with a shrug.

A trainer cuts into our conversation.

“You said they’re changing it back?”

“Yeah,” Marshall says. “That’s what I heard.” (A representative from The New York Department of State denied the rumor.) But insurance money and winner’s purses are certainly on everyone’s minds.

Joe Jackson, the coheadliner in a bout with Monreco Goldston, stares straight ahead.

He’s a svelte 154 pounds, very still when seated. Two talented boxers, both taking a risk and putting their undefeated status on the line, is enough to warrant a headlining spot.

“It’s all about the money,” Jackson tells me. “If the money’s right, the fights are right.”

Local bouts don’t have huge purses.

They’re contingent on ticket sales, and the fighters are responsible for selling those tickets themselves—hence the overrepresentation of friends and family in the crowd. But a fight like this, with exciting cards, builds interest. With interest comes exposure. With exposure comes the opportunity to book bigger fights in places with more boxing fans and, therefore, larger purses.

I ask Marinaccio if the New York law contributes to the quality of North Carolina boxing. “One hundred percent,” he says.

But promoter and event organizer Michelle Rosado gives a hard no to the same question. “It’s easier to get guys to drive down because they can’t get fights in New York,” she concedes. But she says the law isn’t driving the up-and-coming success of Tar Heel boxing. “[The fighters] bought into the program. They have to fight better to get better.”

North Carolina was once a great place for fighters to come rack up wins. Rosado saw talent in North Carolina and—more important—no one capitalizing on that talent.

“It’s an open market here,” Rosado says.

“An opportunity to do it my way.”

Tonight’s card has eight competitive bouts featuring fighters from Michigan, New York, Wisconsin, Philadelphia, and Maryland, culminating in a bout for the North Carolina lightweight championship.

In the penultimate bout, Jackson and Goldston, both North Carolina boys, move quick and catlike on their feet. The bout has just begun when the photographer I’m working with approaches me. I’m only half paying attention to her until she tells me that, as she was capturing photos of spectators, one of her subjects physically assaulted her, grabbing her roughly and refusing to let go.

“This conversation isn’t over,” she says the man told her. “You’re cute.”

I miss the entirety of the second round as we discuss how to proceed. Behind the photographer, Jackson lands a punch. I miss it, but I see Goldston fall, and the Armory explodes with noise as the crowd rises to its feet.

When you strip away the fanfare, the money, the promotion, the belts, everything, boxing is glamorized violence. It’s a riotous, booze-filled environment, hypermasculine, built on the celebration of male strength, exaggerated by the intentional foils of objectified women. Ring girls are part of the tradition. Women are for decoration, or background support, or paid service—we’re not fully present. Boxing treads the line between sport and spectacle, but the spectacle, in many ways, is solely for men.

Before the lightweight championship bout, Rosado told me, “I can’t even tell you who will win.” She was right. It ended in a stunning first-round knockout of the Bull City Bully by Stevie “The Answer” Massey, of Charlotte.

By then, however, I was distracted, being a woman in a space that had brutally reminded me that it was for men.

History recalls the infamous list Senator Joseph McCarthy claimed to possess of 205 Communists employed in the State Department in 1950. Less well known, though, is the roll of ninety-one names John Purifoy circulated that same year as evidence of a “homosexual underground” in the government. That sparked the “Lavender Scare,” an organized effort to root out gays and lesbians in federal employment. According to Senator Alan Simpson, that effort “harmed far more people” than McCarthy’s Red Scare. By the end of the Truman era, 425 State Department employees had been dismissed, and another five thousand workers, contractors, and military personnel would be fired and publicly disgraced after Eisenhower signed a similar executive order in 1953. HAILU MERGIA

As a member of Ethiopia’s Walias Band in the seventies, Hailu Mergia built up his chops as the architect of an intoxicating strain of jazz. The band steeped its approach in some of the musical styles of its home country but, after a first tour of the U.S., chose to remain stateside rather than return to their dictator-controlled home. On keys and accordion, Mergia’s airy, intricate additions straddled the familiar and the futuristic. SOUTHERN CULTURE ON THE SKIDS

Southern Culture on the Skids might not be the first act that comes to mind when you think of big-time North Carolina bands, but the Chapel Hill group certainly earns high marks for longevity and originality. For nearly thirty-five years, the group has powered through with its weirdo, Southern-stained approach to rock music that invites no comparisons (save for Weird Al, who nodded toward the band’s biggest hit, “Camel Walk,” with his 2014 song “Lame Claim to Fame”). The band issued its fourteenth LP, The Electric Pinecones, last September, and it’s rife with wiggly riffs, groovy bass lines, and, of course, a whole track that celebrates flying your freak flag at full height. Southern Culture on the Skids is as good as it’s ever been, so it’s no surprise that The Electric Pinecones has yet to disappear from Billboard’s roots rock chart, even a year later. DWIGHT YOAKAM

Pour yourself into a pair of ripped-knee jeans you’d have to use a surgical saw to get off, then wriggle suggestively to a throbbing backbeat, cowboy hat tilted down over the eyes. That’s Dwight Yoakam’s recipe for success, as he demonstrated in the video for his 1993 single “Fast as You.” But Yoakam had already wriggled and moaned his way onto the charts with his 1986 debut, Guitars, Cadillacs, Etc., Etc. His twang, a product of his Kentucky roots, comes naturally. But Yoakam borrowed from Buck Owens’s Bakersfield sound, too, which got him branded as “too country” in eighties-era Nashville. But Yoakam stayed true to his roots, racking up three consecutive No. 1 albums from 1986 to 1988, and he’s sold more than twenty-five million albums since.

Now critics are after him again, this time for not being bluegrass enough. Yoakam had the audacity to put out what he labeled a bluegrass album, Swimmin’ Pools Movie Stars…, which takes its title from the second verse of Flatt and Scruggs’ “The Theme From The Beverly Hillbillies.”

Traditionalists are all aflutter because they think its not really bluegrass, just the addition of a few ’grassy instruments like banjo and fiddle with the same old arrangements of some of his older material. But that’s not quite the case. Yoakam’s cohorts on the record—guitarist Bryan Sutton, fiddler Stuart Duncan, banjo player Scott Vestal, mandolinist Adam Steffey, and bassist Barry Bales—are all bluegrass superstars who made the recordings as authentically bluegrass as humanly possible. But Yoakam can’t change his distinctive voice or his delivery, so it bleeds country all over the place.

The bluegrass remake of “Two Doors Down” has a banjo plunking alongside Yoakam and a fiddle weeping underneath instead of the pedal steel on the original, but the vocal still sounds great, with Yoakam’s moaning hiccup intact on this classic barroom tearjerker. It’s slowed down a bit, but still powerful as ever, country as all get-out. “Gone” gets the most extensive makeover, its Bakersfield lope discarded for a rattly bluegrass ramble.

Both renditions of “Sad, Sad Music” are fiddle-driven, but the Swimmin’ Pools version gets transmogrified into a waltz, or a two-step if you’re hopped on caffeine and ready to trot.

Just like when newgrass came around in the seventies, some folks resisted change. Grassy or not, Yoakam remains the real deal, here to stay. —Grant Britt CAROLINA THEATRE, DURHAM | 8 p.m., $80–$110, www.carolinatheatre.org

for melody and a real eye for character, Nashville’s Rayland Baxter regrettably adorns his romantic roots-rock laments with heavy synths and gated drums. It smacks of an attempt to fit his modest compositions into the hellishly brick-walled sound of contemporary country radio. Kate Rhudy opens.

Sean Kelly A singer-songSYNTH POP writer from the ascendant Charleston-based power-pop band A Fragile Tomorrow, Sean Kelly struck out on his own this year with Time Bomb Baby. He dabbles in everything from Berlin-era Bowie sonics to straight-up Duran Duran come-ons, all to great effect. Peter Holsapple and Danielle Howelle open.

MONK@100: Ethan Iverson Trio & Ravi Coltrane POWER It’s hard to top the SAX tenor saxophone power featured in the first nine days of the MONK@100 Festival. But this final installation does just that with the great Ravi Coltrane. He’s the son of Alice and John Coltrane (himself a one-time Monk sideman), but Ravi has stood on his own legs as a composer and improviser for a quarter century. Joined by the trio of Ethan Iverson, Victor Lewis, and David Williams, this one should rock. —DR [DURHAM FRUIT & PRODUCE COMPANY, $10–$25/7 & 9 P.M.]

yet weirdly anonymous all the same, Portland’s Portugal.

The Man gravitates toward a repeatable formula of big beats, repetitive hooks, and stridently insipid lyrics. It’s definitely tedious, but it’s probably what we deserve.

Reckless Kelly COUNTRY With brothers ROCK Willy and Cody Braun up front, Reckless Kelly has been churning out rough-hewn, no-nonsense country-rock from its Austin headquarters since the late nineties, becoming one of the best-known exponents of the grassroots-oriented Red Dirt country movement. The band’s most recent record, last year’s Sunset Motel, maintained its hard-hitting sound while making room for some more reflective tunes.

San Fermin CATCHY Classical training POP can’t make you a melodious songwriter, but if you’ve got a tuneful ear already it surely doesn’t hurt.

San Fermin’s lead songwriter, Ellis Ludwig-Leone, studied classical composition at Yale but continues to write from and for the gut. The vocal and horn arrangements on songs like “Sonsick” show a complexity rare in pop music but are as catchy as those on most chart-toppers. Toxic Moxie GLITTER Musical kin to GROOVE early-2000s

dance-punkers such as Franz Ferdinand and The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Toxic Moxie delivers the cathartic aggression of angular guitars alongside the groove of a syncopated bass line. The band embraces the same charmingly overblown sounds as many of its peers: laserbeam synths, offbeat hi-hat hits sparkling like glitter, and cool shout-sung vocals. While not markedly improving upon the dance-punk genre, Toxic Moxie still guarantees a high-energy live set. Wake Forest trio Julia. marinates itself in both the riff-crazed delirium and high-stakes conceptual baroque of seventies rock, recalling at times the most melodramatic gestures of Pete Townshend and Pink Floyd to alternately grating and successful effect.

However silly things get during the spoken-word monologues and piped-in sound effects, this is a killer band capable of recalling everything from the Allmans to the Jimi Hendrix Experience when its members forget the theatrics and allow themselves to concentrate on ruling all. The Shivers open.

Grammy-winning rapper Mr. Cheeks of nineties beat makers Lost Boyz headlines a show that also features Tuscon, Lazarus, and Shame.

If you’re more inclined to rock, you have some solid options.

Living Colour, the alt-metal crew led by Vernon Reid best known for mid-eighties hits like “Cult of Personality” will light up the Lincoln Theatre. Another hot ticket for those seeking the heavyduty is Screaming Females, the fierce New Jersey trio led by the lion-voiced guitar shredder Marissa Paternoster, whose show at The Pinhook is pretty much guaranteed to be high-grade TNT. If you seek something a little less cathartic, there’s the Ratboys at Cat’s Cradle Back Room, a five-piece led

The grown-ups stole Halloween just as surely as the Grinch stole Christmas. What was once a kid-centric, trick-or-treat-for-UNICEF affair confined mainly to the suburbs now resembles New Year’s Eve in its scope, nocturnal exclusion of children, and implicit invitation to misbehave. Halloween in 2017 also involves planning, quite possibly an outlay of dough, and, if you’re dressing up, a certain pressure to innovate and be all Instagram-worthy. You may get your likes, but let’s face it, dressing up as a fidget spinner or Sarah Huckabee Sanders or the throwing-up rainbow emoji takes some commitment. So consider the following alternatives to the expected Halloween machinations, in which dancing is broadly encouraged but by no means mandatory. Hey, it’s your Halloween.

Dance, of course, is a wide field, and the Triangle has many bases covered. Harnessing the dark implications of the day, Nightlight will serve up a bill of chilly synth-pop from Boy Harsher, righteous punk fury from Natural Causes, and d.j. sets from Magical Body and Sponge Bath. Over at the Station in Carrboro it’s Skalloween, with a ska-loving bill featuring The Spectacles, The Scotch Bonnets, and, naturally, a costume contest sure to be heavy on porkpie hats, wingtip creepers, and other sartorial benchmarks of the 2-Tone era.

Duke Coffeehouse offers up a triple bill of dance-party veterans: Chicago-based d.j. Orange Drink, who prides himself on mashing up any number of genres, and local favorites Luxe Posh and Treee City.

At Motorco, the Paranormal Party takes a similarly groove-centric approach with a seamless mix courtesy of DJ Rang and DJ Forge along with Birdgherl. It’s all about hip-hop at The Pour House, where

River Park Concert FAMILY Over in HillsborFUN ough, the town’s arts council has put together a full day of family-friendy music and fun. After a set from the Walker Family Band, Seth Walker offers mild, bluesy rock, followed by Alan Youngblood Hart’s fingerpicked Piedmont-style blues, and even more smooth blues-soul from Eric Lindell.

A CONVERSATION WITH ANDRÉ LEON TALLEY On October 28, the North Carolina Museum of Art opens a large, exciting new exhibit, Inspiring Beauty: 50 Years of the Ebony Fashion Fair. It showcases half a century’s worth of stunning looks by big-name designers (Christian Lacroix, Yves Saint Laurent, Vivienne Westwood) from Ebony magazine’s traveling fashion show, which helped redefine concepts of beauty for African Americans throughout the second half of the twentieth century. We’ll have indepth coverage of the exhibit next week, but for now, we want to point you toward this exceptional auxiliary event featuring legendary Vogue editor (and, later, America’s Next Top Model judge) André Leon Talley, who is originally from Durham and was a fashion editor at Ebony early in his career.

He’ll discuss his behind-the-scenes memories of the Fashion Fair with Audrey Smaltz, who was the voice of the fashion show for years. —Brian Howe

LAST Juxtaposition: CHANCE Married couple Donald Martiny and Celia Johnson create a profound visual language in this exhibit.

Martiny’s works are nonrepresentational, heavily textured three-dimensional shapes that he creates on the floor. It’s a physically taxing process. He uses brushes, brooms, mops, and his hands to push paint into abstract

swoops. The power of pure paint, combined with simple but strong, emotive strokes, is a dazzling convergence, unbound and unrestricted by the shape of a canvas. And Johnson has long been intrigued by moving around shapes and colors to create puzzles. Her well-organized geometric compositions blend modern sophistication with clarity and economy. Photography Festival exhibit by Alex Harris is representative of the festival’s national-caliber, local-focus bent. Harris, a founder of Duke’s Center for Documentary Studies who has been collected from MOMA to NCMA, has photographed the American South for four decades, and looks through a distinctly Southern perspective even when shooting in Alaska, Havana, or Mumbai. This selfselected retrospective palpates the theme of distance, a paramount concern for photographers both technically and ethically. The SuperNatural: We’ve lost sight of the seams, once considered inviolable, between nature, technology, and commerce—though we sometimes imagine we are crossing a boundary when we take thousand-dollar bikes into deceptively wild

woods with our smartphones and moisture wicking socks.

The SuperNatural wades into this liminal zone, exploring how we see and shape the contours of our planet as the physical refuse of the industrial age shades into the digital refuse of the present. The show includes a generative digital video by Tabor Robak, a virtual reality installation by Jakob Kudsk Steensen, and photos by Lars Jan, among many others.

Brooklyn artist Chris Doyle created “Dreams of Infinite Luster,” a digital animation, for the exterior vitrines. In it, “All the elements are rendered in gold, the color of lucre—the product, engine, and goal of capitalism.” Is a luxury hotel an odd site for post-capitalist critique? Sure. (I did.) But he’s actually refracting an area of downtown Chicago through his photographs and illuminated digital collage.

This underscores the essential sameness beneath the superficial variety of the urban pedestrian’s experience, as buildings, streets, and other walkers weave complex lines and parallax perspectives into an ungraspable sensory medium of form, motion, and space. The difference between looking at Hoffman’s photos and his digital collage, where the code from original photos is smashed and reassembled, is like the difference between walking with a destination and walking without one, with paths of necessity decaying into enclosing abstractions of color and shape. We’ve Met Before: Handwoven cloth has a certain rigor, a requirement for stitches to interact with structural integrity rather than spontaneity. Ink, meanwhile, has a quicksilver impulsiveness, a tendency to slip and run unbounded.

Andrea Donnelly holds this contrast in tension. “Cloth, in its infinite variety and varied significance, is deeply linked to our histories and emotions through the body,” she writes in her artist statement.

“Whether it’s woven to hang on the wall or to grace the neck and shoulders, I make cloth that creates connection.”

The images on these large textile pieces evoke bodies, Rorschach blots, abstract flora, and, most of all, memory.

LAST  Darkside: CHANCE Looking for nostalgia and laser lights?

Burning Coal’s production of Tom Stoppard’s Darkside, based on Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side of the Moon, is not that kind of trip.

At first, there is an air of playfulness in central character Emily McCoy’s not entirely guided tour through Philosophy 101 thought experiments. But when it burns off like the morning haze, the doors of perception open onto something closer to a full-force bummer. Theatrically, Stoppard’s work, originally written as a BBC radio play in 2013, is problematic in ways guest director Pálína Jónsdóttir cannot solve. Some will take it as the ultimate snub that this field trip through the frontal lobes actually isn’t for or about the boomers who first came of age to the album. It’s about the political and ecological threats that generation either never solved or made worse, which now loom above us all. $5-$25.

Sense and Sensibility: By all accounts (and a surprising YouTube video or two), last

year’s smash off-Broadway production of Sense and Sensibility was a cinematic whirlwind that swept through Jane Austen’s novel of social intrigue in eighteenth-century England. It kept the Dashwood sisters and their community of suitors, supporters, and detractors in perpetual play— and motion—as actors propelled them about on rolling chairs through equally mobile set pieces. “We wanted to make it not all porcelain teacups and politeness, but fun and exciting and unexpected,” said adapter Kate Hamill, who also starred as Marianne, in a 2016 interview. The PlayMakers production occurs between that run and a scheduled Broadway engagement next year; Durham native Taibi Magar directs a cast including Shanelle Nicole Leonard and Emily Bosco as Elinor and Marianne Dashwood, and Ray Dooley as Mrs.

But among these new works, we also find improbably thought-provoking interpretations. Though resident choreographer Zalman Raffael’s title ballet mainly sticks to the surfaces of Washington Irving’s story, it still provides sly social commentary with imaginative, repurposed musical selections.

The most unexpected and touching part lies in Raffael’s new vision of Crane as he realizes that prospective bride Katrina Van Tassel (Alyssa Pilger) has rejected him. In Lady in the White Veil, Ross Kolman’s

lights and Jeff A.R. Jones’s set design help portray the title character as a dark beauty who is literally lighter than air. As dancer Richard Krusch pursues his veiled desire (Lily Wills) across the stage, his insistent character unwisely convinces her of his sincerity. And in The Raven, the evening’s triumph, Weiss probes the destabilizing psychology of grief. In this imaginative retelling, Nikolai Smirnov’s black bird doesn’t travel the night’s Plutonian shore alone. When he invades the dwelling of a scholar, the raven brings with him a spectral but all too real Lenore. Thru Oct 29.

Charlotte and Jonny are such a cute young couple. They’ve known each other since they were nine, and they’re still spending all their time together in college. She’s white, he’s black. She’s Jewish, he’s Baptist. She’s bisexual (well, theoretically); he’s a virgin. She wants to sleep with him; he really isn’t after that. Her parents, a Southern mother and a liberal Jewish father from New York, approve. Somewhat. Aside, that is, from Dad’s latent racism and homophobia. Can any of these relationships be saved? Certainly, since people change so much in their twenties—and forties—when they finally learn something big about one another and themselves.

On Sundays, the surpassingly droll writer and actor John Hodgman holds court on The New York Times Magazine’s ethics page, presiding exclusively over matters of the “Might a coffee cake be defined as a pie?” variety. Hodgman somehow manages to imbue the conceits with dignity through the conviction of his responses; even when calling readers out, he always takes their demonstrably inconsequential conundrums seriously and seems to genuinely care. That underlying humanity is on full display in his book Vacationland. Describing treks over three distinct landscapes from different periods of his life, including the “dark forest of middle age,” Hodgman employs the dry, not quite deadpan, self-deprecating but not insecure voice that is his signature. Ruminating on the mundane, occasionally soul-sapping demands of adulthood is darker territory than the absurdism that marked earlier works like the bestselling The Areas of My Expertise, but the acuity of Hodgman’s observations makes the prospect of his serious contemplations look like an enticing prospect. KEMTIYU: CHEIKH ANTA UNC’s long-running Diaspora Festival of Black and Independent Films has presented a range of carefully curated features and documentaries that reflect the black experience in its innumerable permutations, from films about the role of hip-hop to relationships between African Americans and South Asians. The featured film in this community screening at the Hayti Heritage Center is a documentary about Cheikh Anta Diop, a Senegalese scientist born in 1925 whose devotion to Africa inspired his research, in which he used carbon dating and linguistic studies to posit the idea that the ancient Egyptians were in fact black people and that Africa, therefore, was the wellspring of civilization. Rated R.  The Snowman—Less a whodunit than a “who cares,” this senseless adaptation of one of Norwegian crime author Jo Nesbø’s Harry Hole books is truly abominable.
