billing@ohparent.com eptember is Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month, and this month’s cover is especially meaningful to me. The boy you see is my nephew, Pearson. Watching him face cancer with such courage and resilience has been nothing short of inspiring.

S

When Pearson was first diagnosed, doctors told us he would lose his hair — but for months, he didn’t. Then, nine months later, I started my own unexpected journey with breast cancer. In a twist I’ll never forget, we both lost our hair at the exact same time. We decided to face it together, shaving our heads side by side. It wasn't a typical aunt-and-nephew bonding moment, but one we’ll never forget.

Pearson’s strength gave me strength.

His bravery helped me face what was ahead in my own story. While I’ll share more about my journey next month,

this month is about him—and about all the children and families navigating the difficult road of childhood cancer.

eptember can bring fresh starts — and fresh stress. Between new routines, school demands and packed schedules, this time of year can feel overwhelming for families and kids alike.

Children experience stress just like adults do, but they don’t always have the tools to cope.

That’s where On Our Sleeves at Dayton Children’s comes in. We’re here to help you support the kids in your life with simple, effective ways to manage stress and build emotional resilience. Here are a few tips to get started.

S

Stress 101 What is stress?

Stress happens as a response to a specific situation or event. Stress often happens when a person feels that they don’t have enough resources (like support, time, skill or energy) to accomplish what they need to do.

Chronic stress is stress that continues for a long time without a way to escape it. For kids, this can come from ongoing challenges at school, such as struggling academically or being bullied. It can also come from family issues, like conflict at home or a big life change.

Not all stress is bad. Some stress can be helpful, like the nerves that kick in before a big test or class presentation. That short-term stress may actually encourage kids to prepare,

• Focus on healthy habits: Getting enough rest, staying active and eating nutritious foods all play a role in managing stress.

Help your child build routines that include time for movement, balanced meals and consistent sleep. These habits can give them a stronger foundation to handle stressful situations. focus and do their best. How to Help Kids Cope with Stress We can’t always prevent kids from feeling stress, but we can give them the tools to handle it. Sharing these tips with the kids in your life will help them cope with tough situations and build resilience.

• Recognize the signs of stress: Kids may not always notice when they’re stressed, but there are signs that can help you spot it. According to the American Psychological Association, kids might show stress through: • Acting out • Expressing anger • Trouble sleeping

• Try coping techniques: Sometimes kids need help coming up with ideas to feel better. Encourage them to explore simple strategies like deep breathing, listening to music, drawing or going for a walk.

• Promote positive self-talk: Negative self-talk happens often when children are stressed. Teaching kids that their thoughts play a role in how they handle a situation and helping them learn to reframe their thoughts to more helpful ones can make a big difference in their mental wellness.

• Make goals: One way to reduce stress is by making goals.

It teaches kids how to break big challenges into smaller pieces. Help them determine what tasks should be given priority and show your support as they work through them.

In addition to teaching kids these strategies, your support as a caring adult makes a big difference. You can show your support by: • Being a role model: Kids learn how to manage stress by watching the grownups around them. Try to show calm, constructive ways of handling your own stress, and talk openly about the things you do to take care of yourself.

• Listening with care: Sometimes what kids need most is someone to listen. Make space for honest conversations about their feelings. Try not to jump in with solutions right away — just listening can be incredibly helpful.

Experiencing stress is a normal part of life — even for kids. With the right support and tools, children can learn to cope and grow stronger through life’s challenges. However, if your child’s stress lasts longer than two weeks or begins to interfere with daily life, talk with their pediatrician, teacher or school counselor for additional support.

earson Wynne, who graces the cover of this magazine, is a warrior who is battling and defeating B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia, or B-ALL, a type of blood cancer where the bone marrow makes too many abnormal B-lymphocytes, a kind of white blood cell.

work out because I'm stressed out. And I need to get away.

And then, sometimes I go to work out because it feels good and it's healthy. But yeah, that's really all that I do for myself these days.” She shrugged.

Laughter is the Best Medicine.

Sisters are Good, Too.

One of the hardest things a parent with a child who has cancer has to do is to explain the diagnosis. But how the heck do you explain cancer to a 4-year-old?

Four-year-old Pearson is the youngest in his family, with two big sisters, Riley and Kennedy.

Naturally, they dote on him in the way only older sisters can.

Not long ago, a trip to the hospital for a fever — one of the scariest things that can happen to cancer patients and their families — turned into an unexpected laugh. As the nurse prepared to draw Pearson’s blood, she spotted a single glittery fake nail clinging to his tiny finger.

“You must have sisters at home,” the nurse said. “Is that one of the stick-on kinds?”

“No… it’s super glued!” Pearson said, proudly showing how firmly his glitter nail was attached.

Pearson’s mom, Maureen, sits across from me, warmly recounting this story. Her hair is still wet from her morning shower. She apologized for her wet hair, and said she had to get her run in, before our early interview time. Exercising is her way of getting through cancer.

“I try my hardest to be able to carve out special time with Kennedy and Riley, because they are going through so much,” Maureen says. “And not only are they dealing with jealous feelings of their brother getting attention and presents and stuff like that, but they're also really scared. Because this is all so hard to understand. So I try to get that special time in with each of them. Just the one-on-one time to make a bracelet, to watch a movie, or to play a game of soccer, whatever it is.”

Sometimes, taking care of yourself during this journey means prioritizing exercise over dry hair.

How To Explain Cancer to a 4-Year-Old

“What my husband and I said is that he has cancer in his blood,” Maureen says. “We've been very forthcoming about it. We told him what cancer is and how his body just had the mutations in it already. We told him that his body was a little off and he had a higher chance of getting this cancer for whatever reason. But it's not contagious. It's not genetic. It's not something he can give to his sisters or someone at school.”

It’s OK to Say “Cancer” The Wynnes have a big, beautiful family. They know how lucky they are because of this, and they also know that all of these wonderful people could also potentially carry an illness that could make Pearson terribly sick. When a child has leukemia,

their immune system is much weaker because of the illness and the treatments.

Even a common cold or mild virus that barely bothers a healthy person can make a person with cancer very sick, very fast. Of course, this might be harder for little ones to understand.

“When we're talking to our girls about it, we tell them not to be afraid to say the word cancer,” Maureen says. “Don't be afraid to ask questions about it.” In the same way they protect Pearson’s health by keeping germs away, they protect his sisters’ hearts by making sure they have the words to talk about what’s happening.

It’s Scary, But We Have Each Other One thing that is hard to reconcile as a sibling of a kid that has cancer is that sometimes jealous feelings will arise. And then guilty ones. As adults, these feelings are easy to name and digest, but kids will need help with this

Embracing Community Help Maureen wants to emphasize that the support and help from neighbors, friends and family have been a lifeline during this period of their lives. Although Pearson’s cancer is a difficult diagnosis, I feel so thankful that we have a village on our side,” she says. “Whether it has been meals, watching kids or welfare checks, our neighbors, friends and families have been more than helpful. We are forever grateful for them.”

Pearson’s journey is far from over, but his story is one of courage, honesty and a family that refuses to let cancer win. In the Wynne home, hard conversations happen at the kitchen table, sisters share both nail glue and fears, and self-care might look like a morning run with wet hair afterward.

There are hospital visits, moments of worry, and days that feel too heavy to bear, but there are also bracelets to make, soccer balls to chase, and glitter nails that stay put no matter what — kind of like this family.

Wet Hair is Awesome “I don't know if it's actually healthy or not, because that's when a lot of my anger comes out,” Maureen says. “And I work out until I cry a little bit. And then I can come home, and I've got my head on my shoulders.

Making Private School Fit Into Your Budget Here’s what to consider when trying to afford the cost of private school.

hoosing the best school for your child can be a tough decision with a lot of factors that come into play.

One of those factors that can’t be ignored is cost. If you are thinking about private school and are concerned that it may be out of your budget, you will be happy to know that there are many options available that can make private school more affordable for most families.

If you’ve been on the fence about private school because of finances, here are some smart strategies that can help you afford private school on a budget.

Payment Plans When you are researching schools, one of the things you will want to keep in mind is if the school offers any type of payment plan. These plans will allow families to budget expenses and spread the payments across the year instead of requiring it all be paid in one lump sum.

This can make a big difference for families when it comes to affordability.

Financial Aid Many private schools will offer need-based financial aid packages for families that qualify. Schools will look at factors such as the family size, yearly income, assets and more when making decisions.

Prior to applying, check with the financial aid office and see what steps are necessary for application and what amount families are typically awarded each year. They may be able to give you an idea of whether or not you will qualify for need-based assistance.

Merit-Based Scholarships If your child excels academically or in extracurricular activities, he or she may be eligible for merit-based scholarships. Some schools may also offer scholarships for students who volunteer or serve in the community in some way. When you are researching schools to find out what may be the best fit for your child, be sure to inquire about their eligibility for these scholarships. Don’t forget to look into deadlines, too, so that you can ensure the applications are turned in on time and that you aren’t leaving any potential money on the table.

Third-Party Scholarships I’m sure you have heard that third-party scholarships are available for college students, but did you know they are available for private schools, too? Look into community groups, organizations and foundations both locally and nationally to see what may be available for your child.

Tax Benefits Did you know that 529 plans can be used for K-12 private schools up to a certain limit? Recent changes in federal law now allow these tax-advantaged savings accounts to help with private education in addition to college costs. Putting money into a 529 savings account is a great way to take advantage of a tax-free education. Some states also offer Education Tax Credits for private school tuition and educational costs. If you are considering private school, this is definitely worth looking into.

Grants and Assistance Programs In addition to scholarships, there are also many grants available for students attending private schools.

Like scholarships, grants do not need to be repaid and are often awarded based on financial need, family size, income and the specific criteria that are laid out by each grant.

Loans If you are still in need of assistance, another option is to consider taking out a loan. In addition to private loans, some schools offer loans for families. Be sure to look into interest rates and weigh the cost versus benefit when applying for loans. Another option is to take out a HELOC (Home Equity Line of Credit) if you currently find yourself with a large amount of equity in your home.

Talk with people in your community and join parent groups This may go without saying, but a great resource is other parents in your community who have children in private schools near you. Join social media groups, post your questions and connect with other parents who have been where you are. They may be able to give you ideas and suggestions based on their personal experience navigating private schools and finances. And who knows? Maybe you and your family will make some great friends in the process.

If you are a parent to a school-age child, you may not always notice the rapid brain development that happens during these years. Day by day, they’re strengthening their ability to complete homework, take tests, and tackle increasingly complex assignments. No matter your child’s age, knowing how to study can make a big difference in their academic success.

Good study habits can help students manage their time, stay organized and build confidence. The best part?

These skills can be developed (and strengthened) at any stage! Take a look at these practical tips to make studying easier, more effective and less stressful for your child.

1. Create a Dedicated Study Space The right environment can make all the difference. Encourage your child to have one specific spot for studying. Ideally, this will be somewhere quiet, well-lit and free from distractions. A desk in their bedroom, a beanbag chair in the den, or even a seat at the dining table can work, as long as it’s consistent.

They might prefer right after school or their bodies might need a snack break first. Younger kids will probably need help setting an ending time for their study sessions, while older students can learn to focus for longer stretches.

The key is helping your child find a rhythm that works with your family’s after-school schedule and their overall commitments.

3. Teach Time Management For many students, the biggest challenge isn’t the material itself, but finding the time to study. Show your child how to break large projects into smaller, manageable steps. Use a calendar or planner to map out assignments, due dates and presentations.

Older students might benefit from digital tools like Google Calendar or Trello. Younger ones might prefer to use colorful paper planners or homework charts. Encourage them to start assignments early so they can avoid last-minute stress!

4. Limit Distractions Phones, TV and social media are major attention stealers. Encourage your child to put devices on silent or leave them in another room while studying. For older students who need a device for research, suggest using website blockers to avoid tempting distractions.

Music can be helpful for some, but it’s best to stick with instrumental or ambient background sounds, which are less likely to pull focus than songs with lyrics.

5. Encourage Active Learning Simply rereading notes isn’t always the most effective way to learn.

Maybe they need an earlier study time, a different location, or new strategies for certain subjects. Being flexible ensures the habits they develop will serve them well in the long run!

Where are meetings held and what are they like?

ince 1996, Oak Tree Corner has provided a nurturing and supportive environment for children and teens in the greater Dayton area who are coping with the loss of a loved one. It provides a space where they can share their experiences with peers and build resilience for a healthy future through guidance and support.

We currently have two locations of Oak Tree Corner. We split up into groups depending on age. We feed the kids and their guardians, and we introduce ourselves and get to know each other. We do group activities to help navigate our grief. It could be an art project or it could be a physical activity. We play games, read stories, share memories, and let participants know that they are not alone. We let them talk, laugh, cry and even scream if they need to let it out. People feel like coming to Oak Tree might be a sad experience, but when they get here, they find the experience can be joyful and happy with kids getting the chance to be around others who have the same shared experience.

Who can come to Oak Tree Corner, and is there a cost?

Oak Tree Corner is for grieving children ages 3 to 18 years old, who have experienced a loss.

There is no cost. To prepare properly, facilitators do have an intake meeting with each participant before attending.

Other than volunteering, how can people help?

We are always looking for donations. Pizza gift cards (Papa John's or Domino's), grocery store gift cards, paper products, plasticware, small bags of chips, cookies, arts and crafts materials, or a monetary donation to help with the cost of facility upkeep and other necessary expenses.

Also, if you do not feel the call to volunteer at the group meetings, we are always looking to add diversity to our executive board. The board is crucial for planning and fundraising for the future of Oak Tree Corner.

How can people volunteer to help, and is training offered or needed?

Does Oak Tree Corner offer therapy and counseling?

OakTree Corner does not offer professional therapy or counseling. We are a nonprofit organization that meets bi-weekly in a group setting where we can listen and be there for the children to help them learn to live with grief.

We offer volunteer training twice a year. We welcome anyone who is interested to reach out, and we
