WORDS BY NICOLE SIPE
This is a summer of transition for my family. In the fall, my kids are leveling up: My oldest son is going to high school, and my youngest son is going to middle school. We have officially said goodbye to elementary school. (Insert a single tear slowly making its way down my cheek here.)
It’s also an incredibly busy summer. My oldest son begins marching band practice this summer, with a schedule that, when I printed it out, is pages long. This means no big trips for us this summer — we’re keeping any activities close to home.
And I’m OK with that, because fortunately, there are lots of opportunities for fun practically in our own back yard. If you’re also looking for ways to make this summer a spectacular one without traveling
far, then this is the issue for you. Our Summer Fun Issue is packed with ideas for making the most of this season, with articles about everything from hiking spots and paddle sports to the best places to find ice cream. There’s so much to do in Central Indiana, and you can easily fill your summer days with lots of local fun.
Whether you’re traveling far or sticking close to home like me and my family, I hope your summer is filled with fun adventures!

Miniature indoor gardens are all the rage. They’re perfect for small spaces. They are easy to maintain. They give their creators a chance to express their individuality through the choice of container, plants and decorations. And they are a beautiful complement to any room.

And, you can purchase a DIY Kit with everything you need to create a terrarium — like Sapphire Sea, Sahara Dreams, Dinosaur Fun or Butterfly & Me — at home. Bringing music, art, dance and theatre to the Greater Cincinnati community since 1995.
ocated in a beautifully restored 1910-era home just outside Cincinnati, the Wyoming Fine Arts Center is a community hub where people of all ages, races, abilities and backgrounds can learn, create and experience the joy of the arts. Southwest Ohio Parent spoke to Brianna Matzke, executive director of the Wyoming Fine Arts Center, to find out more about this creative nonprofit.
What is the story behind the Wyoming Fine Arts Center?
The Wyoming Fine Arts Center has been part of this community for three decades. We are a place where neighbors have taken their first piano lessons, discovered a love of drawing, or found their footing on a stage. We're a nonprofit, and our mission is straightforward: to make high-quality arts education accessible to everyone. We offer private lessons, group classes, camps and performances across music, visual art, dance and theater. The building itself is part of the story, too; it's a historic home that has been lovingly maintained and adapted so it can keep serving the community for generations to come.
What types of classes do you offer for kids, teens and families?
We have something for just about every age and interest. Private lessons in piano, guitar, voice, strings, woodwinds and more, taught by working musicians
WORDS BY PAM FREEMAN

who genuinely love to teach. Group classes/workshops for adults, families, teens and children in visual art, dance and theater. And every summer, a full season of arts camps for kids and teens. Whether a child is picking up an instrument for the first time or an adult is feeling more serious about developing their craft, we try to meet them where they are.
What upcoming programs and events are you most excited about?
This summer's camp lineup is something I'm really proud of. One camp I keep talking about is called The Making Of: Sets, Props,
Costumes & Special Effects. It's hands-on, it's theatrical, and it lets kids see the full picture of how a production comes together behind the scenes. We're also aiming to launch a free Sunday concert series in our ballroom this fall, which feels like a real milestone. Good live music, open to everyone, no ticket required.
How do you ensure your programs are inclusive and welcome everyone?
We take that seriously. Thanks to generous support from ArtsWave and our community, we
are able to keep tuition affordable. In the fall, we are expanding our scholarship program for private music lessons so that it can include our after-school art and theatre programming, as well. Our building is also on an active accessibility improvement journey (we're in the middle of fundraising for a ramp and restroom renovation) because we want our space to reflect our values. And we try to program across the widest range of interests, abilities and backgrounds, so that students see themselves and their communities reflected in what we teach and perform.
Come volunteer. We just launched a program called the Care Crew, made up of community members who help us steward this building and garden we all share. Follow us on social media. Tell a friend. And honestly, just walk in. We love meeting people. You can find everything at musicartdance.org.

What could be better than coffee and chocolate?
To be honest, not much. At the Cocoa Muse in Loveland, the motto is “slow down and treat yourself.” That’s easy to do in this cozy boutique where European-style cocoa, espresso, teas, lemonade and curated chocolates reign supreme. It’s a place for the whole family to find a treat just for themselves and savor.
The drink menu at the Cocoa Muse reads like a must-sip list. It’s hard to pick. Americano, cappuccino, cold brew, cortado and European hot chocolate, flat white, French press coffee and frozen hot chocolate top the list. Specialty drinks like blonde muse, first frost latte, lotus lemonade, midnight in Dubai and pineapple fiesta lemonade are tasty. Tea lattes with names like misty muse, spiced muse and zen muse are must-tries.
Summer drinks are perfect for hot days, including bananas fosters macchiato, bees knees tea, blueberry crumble latte, frozen creamsicle cloud, shark

bite, frozen strawberry colada and strawberry shortcake matcha. Chocolate treats include truffles, fudge, and bulk candies like gummy bears, chocolatecovered s'mores and dark chocolate Rice Krispies.
Parties get a bit sweeter with a custom chocolate charcuterie board that’s perfect for celebrations of all kinds, including birthdays, graduation parties and baby showers. Oneof-a-kind mugs can be filled with candies and a gift card and are perfect for small gifts like teacher appreciation.

Explore easy, scenic paths the whole family can enjoy.
Exploring the outdoors as a family is easier than ever, thanks to southwest Ohio’s wide network of parks, greenways and nature preserves designed with kids in mind. Families will find everything from stroller-friendly paved paths to wooded trails filled with creeks and wildlife. Whether you’re planning a quick afternoon outing or a longer weekend adventure, there’s no shortage of places where kids can stretch their legs and connect with nature.
Cincinnati’s parks blend natural beauty with fun amenities for children, making them ideal for families with kids of all ages. A standout destination is Cincinnati Nature Center, a preserve with more than 16 miles of trails that wind through forests, streams and fields. Trails like the Discovery Trail are especially popular with families, with hikes that are not too long and interactive features, like creek crossings and nature-themed play areas.
Another favorite is Sharon Woods, where paved paths circle a lake and have a smooth walk-
ing surface for strollers and beginner hikers. The Shared-Use Trail offers a flat, scenic loop, while nearby playgrounds and picnic spots make it easy to play after the hike.
Winton Woods is the best of both worlds, with both paved and natural trails. The Kingfisher Trail is a short, wooded loop perfect for younger kids, while longer paths give older children room to explore. The park’s blend of forest, wetlands, and open space keeps things visually interesting.
Closer to downtown, Smale Riverfront Park offers a different kind of outdoor experience, with paved walking paths along the Ohio River. This park is great for casual strolls, and the park’s fountains and climbing structures make it especially great for younger children.
For families seeking a bit more adventure, Mount Airy Forest provides shaded trails such as the Beechwood Loop and Red Oak Trail. These paths have gentle elevation changes and more natural terrain while being manageable for kids.
French Park is a hidden gem, with short, wooded trails and a lovely creek. It’s a quiet park, and a good choice for families looking for a peaceful walk without large crowds.
On the west side, Miami Whitewater Forest offers a mix of paved and dirt trails, including the Shaker Trace Trail, which is wide and mostly flat, so it’s ideal for biking, walking or strolling.
Dayton’s MetroParks system is known for its accessibility and variety, offering plenty of options for families. Taylorsville MetroPark features the Orange and Yellow Trail Loop, which follows the Great Miami River. The paths are well-marked and relatively easy, with just enough variation to keep kids engaged.
Sugarcreek MetroPark stands out for its beautiful trees and different trail lengths. Families can opt for shorter loops or explore longer paths with gentle hills and scenic overlooks.
At Aullwood Audubon Center and Farm, hiking is an educational experience. The trails connect woodlands, prairies
and farmland, allowing kids to see animals, gardens and natural habitats all in one visit.
Cox Arboretum MetroPark has paved and natural trails that go through gardens and native landscapes. The Tree Tower is a highlight for kids and adds a bit of adventure to the hike.
For something interactive, Grant Park features a popular storybook trail designed for younger children. As families walk along the path, they can read pages of a story and engage with prompts along the way.
Possum Creek MetroPark is another family-friendly option, with easy trails that wind through meadows and around ponds. The open landscape makes it a great spot for spotting wildlife and enjoying wide views.
Englewood MetroPark offers a mix of short trails, waterfalls and scenic overlooks. The Englewood Dam area is especially popular, with easy access and plenty of space for kids to explore.
From paved city paths to rugged, wooded loops, Indianapolis has a wide range of trails and provides families with many ways to enjoy the outdoors together.

E. Stewart St., Dayton
On the campus of University of Dayton is Kennedy's Eternal Flame, a sculpture that creates the illusion of an eternal flame honoring President John F. Kennedy. It’s a quick roadside stop, but its abstract design makes it memorable and a little mysterious.

1330 Monmouth Ave., Cincinnati
In Cincinnati, one of the standout stops is the American Sign Museum, a colorful celebration of vintage signage. Inside, families can wander through glowing neon displays, retro advertising, and massive restored signs that feel like stepping into a different era. 14 Market St., Brookville
If you like animal oddities, then head to the basement of the Samuel Spitler House Community Museum near Dayton. At this small museum, visitors
can see Andy D-Day and the 2Headed Calf, a strange but fascinating display featuring a two-headed calf and other unusual specimens. It’s a classic roadside attraction that leans into curiosity and the slightly bizarre.
1000 Carillon Blvd, Dayton
Located in Carillon Historical Park, the Carousel of Inventions celebrates the inventive spirit of the Wright brothers with creative displays and historical context. It’s both educational and engaging, making it a great balance of fun and learning.
2911 Woodside Dr., Cincinnati
Triceracopter is a life-size half-dinosaur, half-helicopter, located on the fourth floor of the University of Cincinnati’s Langsam Library. Its full name — “Triceracopter: Hope for the Obsolescence of War” — was built by artist Pat Renick, a former faculty member at the university.
