his issue of Indy’s Child is dedicated to our Founding Publisher, Barbara S. Wynne, who passed away on July 18, 2026.

T

BB, as she was known by most, was also my mother and the grandmother of our Digital Publisher, Wendy Hasser. Families are the roots of our community, and BB certainly understood the importance of family. She built a strong family of her own, raising six children and becoming a grandmother to 17 grandchildren and a great-grandmother to 15 greatgrandchildren. But she also created another kind of family—a family within the Indianapolis tennis community, where she touched thousands of lives throughout her lifetime.

In 1964, she started the Indianapolis Tennis Program on the tennis courts at North Central High School which grew into one of the largest tennis communities in Indiana. One of the highlights of her life was becoming a Tennis Legend at The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis. Almost every Saturday, you could find her there teaching red-ball tennis to children. She was deeply proud of the bronze statue created in her honor at the Sports Legend Experience.

As much as BB loved tennis, she also had a soft spot for young families.

In 1983, while attending a wedding in Austin, Texas, she came across a small magazine

At the time, I had just graduated from college.

I wasn't married and didn't have children, but BB came to me with her grand idea: She wanted me to give it my all and create Indy’s Child with her. It was a very different world back then.

There was no email, internet, fax machine, cell phone or any of the modern conveniences we take for granted today. But BB had a vision, and we worked hard together. In November of 1984, we published the very first issue of Indy’s Child.

That little magazine has grown and changed tremendously over the years, but our original mission has never changed: Where to Go and What to Do in Indianapolis.

As BB grew older, she was always asking me about Indy’s Child and how it was doing. She loved every issue. She was so proud of its growth and of the place it had earned in the Indianapolis community. And she was especially proud of her granddaughter, Wendy Hasser, and the beautiful website she created, IndysChild.com, which now serves thousands of parents every day as an additional resource for Indianapolis families.

BB's influence extended far beyond the pages of a magazine or the tennis courts.

Her mission in life was simply to spread love wherever she went. Every visit with my mom ended the same way. As I would leave her apartment, I would tell her, “I love you.”

And she would always respond, “I love you more.” Those four words may be the simplest description of who BB was. She loved more. She gave more. She believed in children She believed in families. She believed in Indianapolis.

That’s the year that President Jimmy Carter designated the first Sunday after Labor Day as National Grandparents Day.

Celebrate creativity at the 9th annual Garfield Park Art & Music Festival, an outdoor event honoring the art, music and culture of Indianapolis. Highlighting and uplifting artists and musicians who are often underrepresented, the festival features local musicians and bands of diverse genres performing their original music. More than 50 local artists working in a variety of mediums will also host artist booths with their fine art and handmade wares for sale as part of a curated art fair.

Polklore Micro-Museum W O R D S B Y SAMANTHA KUPIAINEN

n the 1890s, Polk Sanitary Milk Company was the largest milk distributor in Indianapolis. Its operations were headquartered in the Martindale-Brightwood neighborhood, which is the near east side of Indianapolis at 15th Street and Lewis Street. The neighborhood encompasses Massachusetts Avenue, Sherman Drive, the Monon Trail and more.

I

Polk Sanitary Milk Company provided steady, local jobs to its employees, especially to those who called the Martindale-Brightwood neighborhood home. According to Historic Indianapolis, it hired Black workers when other local dairies would not.

In recognition of the impact Polk Sanitary had on the neighborhood and legacy it left behind for other small businesses, the Harrison Center for the Arts founded the Polklore Micro-Museum, a museum that “preserves stories that help visitors understand how this place moved milk

across Indianapolis and how it now moves ideas, skills and small businesses forward.”

The Harrison Center for the Arts is an Indianapolis-based nonprofit that exists to foster awareness, appreciation, and community for arts and culture.

The museum is located along the Monon Trail at the 16th Street corridor. It features a selection of art installations and audio and video experiences collected by artists from neighbors in the community.

The center of the micromuseum's purpose is to “engage the public in a conversation about cultural preservation,” while also celebrating Polk Dairy and the MartindaleBrightwood neighbors.

Tours of the Polklore MicroMuseum are by appointment only, and are facilitated on Mondays and Fridays only.

Rather than simply hearing about scientific concepts, many children learn best when they can actively engage with them. Building, experimenting, observing and problem-solving help young learners connect abstract ideas to the world around them. Whether they're testing what makes an object move, exploring patterns or figuring out how to construct something that won't fall over, children are learning to think critically while having fun.

When you visit The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis with your child, you’re giving them opportunities to explore the fundamentals of STEM. You probably already know that the museum has science-themed exhibits like ScienceWorks, Dinosphere, Beyond Spaceship Earth, and Playscape (for children age 5 and under) that provide opportunities

for young learners to build, climb, jump, touch and dig into scientific exploration. But it doesn’t stop with those exhibits. From the bangs and thuds of Rube Goldberg-inspired Ball Machine to the clicks, clacks and clunks of the brand-new play stations in the reimagined All Aboard! train-themed exhibit that reopens Saturday, Sept. 26, the museum has exploration opportunities at every turn.

Laying the Groundwork Hands-on STEM activities also encourage children to take risks and learn from mistakes. When a solution doesn't work the first time, kids have the chance to adjust their approach and try again. This process helps build persistence, confidence and resilience, important skills that extend far beyond science and math.

Cooking Matters Offering free hands-on cooking, nutrition and budget-friendly grocery shopping education to central Indiana residents.

s almost every parent is sure to attest, few skills in life are as fundamentally important as cooking a decent meal. While it’s always tempting to simply throw together a last-minute meal made from whatever you can find in your cabinets, it’s also crucial to remember to enjoy healthier meals made with all-natural ingredients.

A

Fortunately, Cooking Matters offers a firsthand learning environment that emphasizes healthy, budget-friendly dishes that the entire family can appreciate. Proving that nutritious meals can be fun, inexpensive and nurturing for every family, Cooking Matters has fundamentally changed the way people see food — not to mention all the wondrous possibilities that come from a remarkable recipe.

How It Started Originally created by the national nonprofit Share Our Strength in 2015, Cooking Matters is currently offered through the Indy Hunger Network, an organization that has faithfully served communities across the Hoosier State for the past decade.

The central aim of Cooking Matters is to teach locals how to incorporate healthy, lowcost meals to their ordinary diet. To that end, Indy Hunger Network brings mobile kitchens to numerous sites in Marion County and surrounding

Cooking Matters also fosters community engagement by having participants share the meal they cooked with the rest of their class. Attendees then leave with all the ingredients they used to make their recipe, so that they might make the same dish at home. counties, reaching a number of program attendees interested in honing their cooking skills.

Cooking Matters ends each course by handing out a folder filled with 21 budget-friendly meals capable of feeding a family of four or more for $15 or less. The program also provides a number of informational sheets detailing basic nutritional facts, food safety and handy tips to keep in mind for grocery shopping on a budget.

Who It Serves As Indy Hunger Network indicates on its website, Cooking Matters is geared toward helping residents learn about the benefits of a nutritious diet and cost-effective ingredients. To help see that mission through, the program offers a number of free in-person class options, including a one-time 1-hour course, or four-week and six-week course formats.

The goal of each Cooking Matters class is simple. Providing hands-on support from knowledgeable classroom leaders, attendees will familiarize themselves with healthy dining, from specific cooking methods to the nutritional concepts associated with certain recipes. Each class’s curriculum caters directly to adults and younger

participants alike, making it a fantastic activity for families looking to learn and grow as at-home chefs together.

hen the leaves start changing and the air gets cooler, you know what that means: Fall is coming!

From pumpkin patches and apple orchards to hikes and hayrides, there are so many ways to celebrate the season with your family. Whether you're looking for an afternoon outing or a weekend adventure, these fun fall activities will help you make the most of the season.

Enjoy the Fall Colors on a Nature Hike There's no better way to experience the beauty of the season than by getting outside. Brown County State Park offers some of Indiana's most spectacular fall foliage and is well worth the drive. Closer to home, Eagle Creek Park, Fort Harrison State Park, Holliday Park, Marott Park and Central Park in Carmel all have easy trails that are perfect for families.

Pick the Perfect Pumpkin Few fall traditions are as memorable as wandering through a pumpkin patch in search of the perfect pumpkin. Families can find plenty of pumpkins at Tuttle Orchards in Greenfield, Piney Acres in Fortville, Stuckey Farm in Sheridan and Spencer Farm in Noblesville.

Visit an Apple Orchard Apple picking is one of the sweetest ways to celebrate the season. Anderson Orchard in Mooresville has been a local favorite for U-Pick apples for many years, while Beasley's Orchard in Danville has dozens of apple varieties along with family-friendly fall activities. Looking for a scenic drive? The Apple Works in Trafalgar makes a great day trip. If fresh-picked apples aren't enough, stop by the Apple Store at Conner Prairie for apple cider donuts, cider slushies, caramel apples and other seasonal treats.

Get Lost in a Corn Maze Corn mazes are a fall tradition for all ages. Conner Prairie's popular maze offers a fun challenge, and visitors can even view the design from above aboard the 1859 Balloon Voyage. Waterman's Family Farm features a giant maze, while Piney Acres boasts a fun maze packed with twists and turns. Take a road trip to Exploration Acres in Lafayette, home to one of the state's largest corn mazes with miles of winding paths.

Hop on a Hayride Nothing says autumn quite like a hayride. Many local farms offer classic wagon rides through colorful fields, including Piney

three children with his wife, Hannah, the person he believes keeps things running smoothly in the fast-growing Rhodes household.

“We’ve got three boys, and they need a lot of energyburning time,” Rhodes says. Since joining the Indianapolis Colts back in 2016, the 33-year-old football player has welcomed

“Her support and dedication, and the time that she spends getting them involved in everything and signed up for activities and ready for school [means so much]. When I get home, I can kind of take over and help out in any way I can.”

Rhodes’ dedicated stance when it comes to his wife and children all trace back to his own upbringing with his close-knit family. “My dad was my coach in most of my sports growing up, and then in high school he kind of stepped back so he could just be a fan,” he says of his parents. “They might have missed one game in my whole college career.”

Nowadays, as a father himself, Rhodes tries to approach raising his children with the same thoughtful attentiveness his parents took when he was growing up.

“I would say I make sure discipline is at the front,” Rhodes says. “I make sure they know they can trust me.

Really, just giving them my time and attention and leading with love. And really showing them what it looks like for a healthy relationship and marriage. My wife and I try to give them a very good example of what they should look for.”

On Being a Role Model To that end, Rhodes has worked tirelessly to make sure that he’s serving as a role model to his own children, as well as younger fans of the NFL. Reflecting on the Colts’ summer training camp, he observes, “I can remember vividly being a kid and thinking, ‘How cool would it be to be this up close and personal and talking and interacting with an NFL player?’” Rhodes says.

“And for me, I don’t think of myself like that, but the way they look at me is different.

So I kind of put myself in their shoes and give them the experience they’re looking for, being the kind of role model I would want my kids to look up to.”

Along with trying to serve as a positive influence for the younger generation, Rhodes also remains incredibly active with various children’s charity and support groups, including the Children’s Bureau and the Children of Fallen Patriots.

“I come from a military family, so I couldn’t imagine being a little kid and losing a parent in the line of duty,” Rhodes says.

“Really, it’s about giving kids

As for a perfect night in the Rhodes’ abode, Rhodes says he prefers a quiet night of card games and TV, as well as cooking their meals together as a family. In terms of favorite recipes, Rhodes mentions that he can make a “sweet potato coconut shepherd’s pie,” a couple different stews, and plenty of steak throughout the week. “Our boys just love a good steak,” he says.

Enjoying Indy as a Family For as much work Rhodes puts into his charity efforts and accomplished NFL career, he also is adamant about spending time with his family. As a touching example of this, the first thing he does after practice is catch up with his wife and sons. Indeed, it’s not uncommon for the Rhodes family to watch Rhodes practice and play on the sidelines, in addition to exploring the outdoors and the countless activities Indianapolis has to offer.

“They love coming out here and watching practice and hitting all the parks,” Rhodes says. “You know, Indy’s just full of things for children to do around here, so that part makes it easy. There’s always something to do.”

“It is challenging to go out with three boys, one being 10 months old,” Rhodes says.

“That’s not as enjoyable as staying home and cooking and playing Uno and card games, or going for a walk or fishing. Just things that kind of wind down the night. Maybe watch a little TV show, read our books and go to sleep. That’s what we enjoy and thrive in the most.”

The list goes on and on.

Another one of those choices is schooling. Choosing the right school for your child is a big decision, and there’s no one-size-fits-all answer.

Private and public schools each have their own unique advantages, from curriculum and class sizes to cost, extracurriculars and educational approach.

Knowing the differences can help you weigh your options and find the school that best fits your child’s needs, your family’s priorities and your budget.

Teaching Styles Teaching styles can depend a lot on the teacher and the school environment. For the most part, private schools are not bound by all of the same state requirements as public schools, so teachers may have more flexibility in what they teach and how they teach it. Public schools, however, offer important strengths, as well. Teachers often follow the same learning goals and standards, which gives students a consistent and structured education. They also have access to many resources and training opportunities. Working with students from different backgrounds can also bring new ideas and perspectives to the classroom.

Curriculum One big difference between public and private school curriculum is that public schools must follow state standards and guidelines.

This helps make sure students learn important skills and knowledge, and are prepared for standardized tests. It also gives students across public schools a similar academic foundation, no matter which school they attend.

Public schools also offer a wide variety of subjects, activities and programs to meet the needs and interests of different students.

Private schools have more freedom to create their own curriculum. Some may focus on areas such as religion, STEM, the arts or languages.

They may also use different teaching approaches, such as Montessori or Waldorf.

Student Support Public schools are funded by taxes, whereas private schools are funded by tuition and donations. Because of this, the type of support can vary depending on the finances available to the schools. In public schools, you will find a lot of support in the form of school counselors, social workers and other state sponsored programs. In private schools, you might find more resources that allow for one-on-one time or specialized learning, depending on the focus of that particular private school.

If your child has learning disabilities, or other special needs, this is something you will want to discuss with the school staff. Public schools offer Individualized

Education Plans (IEPs) that are created for your student based on their needs. A team will sit down with the parents and child and review the IEP annually to make any necessary adjustments for the next school year.

Class Sizes Public schools are mapped out based on where people live, which affects the size of the classroom. With private schools, as long as you have the means and the transportation, it does not matter if you are zoned for the school.

Typically, private schools sometimes offer smaller classes with more one-on-one instruction than public schools.

Extracurricular Opportunities Both private and public schools can offer extracurricular opportunities, like sports, clubs, academics, arts, music and more. If your child has something they love that you want to encourage them to grow in, check with your public and private schools in the area to see which one may be a better fit. Some schools have specific focuses, such as art and music, that you may want to consider.

School Communities Public school communities are great because the students all come from the community where you live, which makes playdates, carpooling and getting to know the student’s families easier. If you are in a small town, you are likely to run into classmates and fam-

ilies everywhere you go. Public school communities also tend to be more diverse and rely heavily on organizations such as the Parent Teacher Association, which is a great way for parents to become involved with the classroom, and the school as a whole. With private schools, the communities may be more tailored to specific religious or philosophical beliefs. Private schools also tend to be smaller, which can create a strong sense of community and easy ways to get plugged into the school.

Costs Something to consider about private schools is the cost of tuition. Public schools are funded by taxes and do not have tuition, whereas private schools do have an annual cost. Many schools offer scholarships, grants and other aid that students may qualify for.

Be sure to contact the school to find out what options may be available for funding.

There are many benefits to both private and public schools, and what is best varies depending on each child and family. A great way to learn more about the schools you are interested in is to connect with the parents who have children attending that school currently. Is there a parent group you can join?

Or someone you can grab a cup of coffee with to learn more about their experience? These choices can feel like a lot, but remember: Nobody knows your child like you.

And if you find out it isn’t the best fit, remember that you can always switch.

y 10:30 a.m., my oldest is still at school. I'm in the carpool line to pick up my middle son, then we're off to therapy. Is today occupational therapy?

Physical therapy? Speech?

Wait... is it a co-treat?

The littlest needs (another) snack.

My phone reminds me to email a teacher, follow up on an insurance appeal, and complete paperwork before tomorrow's appointment with a new specialist.

From the outside, it looks like an ordinary school morning.

But for many neurodivergent families, the school day is only one small part of the story. While every family's journey is different, many parents know the invisible work that happens before the morning bell, after dismissal, and in all the moments in between.

Then the school day begins.

For some families, mornings include preparing preferred foods, navigating unexpected changes in routine, supporting sensory needs, remembering medications, or simply helping a child feel ready for the day ahead. Before school has even begun, parents have already solved problems, adjusted plans, and celebrated small victories that no one else will ever see.

Every child's experience is different. Some children love school. Some find it exhausting.

Some receive extensive support throughout the day, while others use every ounce of energy they have just to make it through before needing time to recover at home. There is no single neurodivergent experience, and no one story represents every family.

When the final bell rings, another part of the day begins.

The afternoon often becomes a carefully coordinated rhythm of therapy appointments, homework, communication with teachers, medical visits, feeding support, and helping a child transition from one environment to the next. Parents become advocates, schedulers,

transportation coordinators, record keepers and emotional anchors, all while trying to keep everyday family life moving forward.

There are siblings who need attention, meals to prepare, laundry to fold, and tomorrow's schedule already waiting. Many families are also balancing the financial realities of therapies, specialized supports, insurance challenges, and work schedules that revolve around their child's needs.

Much of this work happens quietly.

When someone sees a child having a great day at school, they may not realize the planning and support that helped make it possible. When a child has a difficult day, they may not see the patience, flexibility

and care that help everyone regroup and try again tomorrow.

The school day matters. It always will. But it is only part of the story.

The story also includes the unseen moments before the morning bell, the work that continues long after dismissal, and the families who show up every day with remarkable dedication. Success isn't measured only by what happens inside the classroom. Sometimes it's getting there at all. Sometimes it's making it through one more appointment, one more transition, or one more day together.

When we recognize the invisible labor surrounding the school day, we create space for greater understanding, stronger partnerships, and communities where every family feels seen.

his November, Indianapolis voters will see a question on their ballots asking them to approve or reject an operating referendum to fund the education of our city’s young people — students who live in the Indianapolis Public Schools boundary and attend IPS and charter schools.

The word “referendum” calls to mind dollars, percentages, and budget line items — and these details are important. However, as the principal of Brookside School 54 on the near Eastside of Indianapolis, I can tell you that the referendum on your ballot this November is not just about dollars and cents. It’s about children. It’s about working families. And it’s about the future we want for our city.

Every morning, nearly 400 students walk through the doors of Brookside, an IPS elementary school, carrying more than just backpacks. Some carry anxiety.

Some carry trauma. Some carry food insecurity. Some carry the weight of circumstances that no child should have to carry.

But they also carry dreams for their future selves. They dream of becoming doctors and developing cures to cancer. They dream of becoming professional athletes and scoring the winning field goal that brings pride to Hoosiers. They dream of be

coming teachers who help future generations reach their potential the way their teachers have helped them. In spite of the challenges they face, our students show up ready to learn, work hard, and build a better future.

For students at Brookside, school is more than just a place to learn. It is their support system.

It is their safe place. It is where they receive encouragement, affirmation, and hope.

As their principal, I get the privilege of seeing what most people never get to see: what happens after the morning bell rings and class is in session. I see a shy student start the year reading below grade level and, through intervention and support, begins to believe in herself again. This year, we’re celebrating the fact that four in five of our third-grade students are passing the state IREAD exam — it’s growth we’re realizing each year.

I see the child who comes to school hungry and is able to focus because their basic needs have been met through our district’s free, nutritious breakfast and lunch program and through our community food pantry, which not only serves Brookside families but also the broader Near Eastside community.

dividends to society that are unmatched by any other. Education is highly correlated with greater ingenuity and economic prosperity, lower crime rates, and higher voter participation. Every nurse, firefighter, electrician, teacher, entrepreneur, and lawyer who grew up in Indianapolis once sat in a classroom like ours. Every day when I go to work, I look into the eyes of children and I know they are worth investing in. Believe in the next generation, and they will prove to you that every penny was worth it.

I see the student struggling with behavior, grief, or mental health challenges who finds safety, stability, and support within our school walls. At every turn, our staff has shown what is possible when students receive the support they deserve.

Yes, times are hard right now, and the cost of living is going up.

But what I can tell you is that an investment in education pays

Many of our graduates live, work, and raise their own families in Indianapolis, which means that the seeds we sow today in our schools will strengthen our city years from now. For an increase of 37 cents per $1,000 of assessed property value, we have an opportunity to invest in the children who will shape Indianapolis for decades to come.
