Finding Joy Close to Home

This is a summer of transition for my family. In the fall, my kids are leveling up: My oldest son is going to high school, and my youngest son is going to middle school. We have officially said goodbye to elementary school. (Insert a single tear slowly making its way down my cheek here.)

It’s also an incredibly busy summer. My oldest son begins marching band practice this summer, with a schedule that, when I printed it out, is pages long. This means no big trips for us this summer — we’re keeping any activities close to home.

And I’m OK with that, because fortunately, there are lots of opportunities for fun practically in our own back yard. If you’re also looking for ways to make this summer a spectacular one without traveling

far, then this is the issue for you. Our Summer Fun Issue is packed with ideas for making the most of this season, with articles about everything from hiking spots and paddle sports to the best places to find ice cream. There’s so much to do in Central Indiana, and you can easily fill your summer days with lots of local fun.

Get ready for an un-fur-gettable new experience at the Indiana State Museum! Through Sept. 27, families can step into the paws of their favorite furry friends and discover how pets perceive the world around them. This multi-sensory experience digs into the science behind a dog’s zoomies, decodes what cats are actually thinking and highlights how pets are surprisingly communicative for animals that cannot speak. Visitors will discover the

unique body types and physical characteristics of a range of canine and feline breeds, from the tiniest Chihuahuas to the tallest Great Danes, and from the lush Persians to the hairless Sphynx. Plus, guests can challenge their reflexes as they try to jump like a cat and weave through a dog agility course.

How Risky Play Builds Brave, Confident Kids

W hat’s your first reaction when you see your child, say, climbing a tree too high? Or “sword fighting” with sticks or play-wrestling with the neighbor kids?

If it’s to immediately put an end to it, try to refrain.

Those activities are considered risky play, which is defined as thrilling and exciting forms of free play that involve uncertainty of outcome and a possibility of physical injury.

Risky play includes playing with heights, speed, tools and near elements, such as fire and bodies of water; play where kids can wander independently; and roughhousing.

Eliminating risky play means eliminating an essential part of kids’ emotional, social and physical development.

“Any risky play helps build resilience and confidence, even when the play is challenging physically, cognitively or socially,” says Elyse Handel, early childhood education manager at The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis. “When children engage in risky play, they often become critical thinkers and problem-solvers.”

Testing the Limits

The Children’s Museum’s newest exhibit, Extreme Sports: Beyond Human Limits, opening June 6, features risky play, albeit on a larger, professional level. The immersive experience allows families to explore the physical and mental aspects of sports such as wingsuit flying, ice and rock climbing, free diving, and parkour.

Athletes will share why they participate in these sports, how they overcome challenges and persevere through failures, and the training and preparation they go through.

Put yourself in the shoes of an extreme athlete when you walk a short section of highline (inches off the ground), test your ability to stand on balance boards,

Building Confidence and Bravery

Extreme athletes need confidence and bravery to do what they do. Risky play helps kids develop those qualities, as well. When engaging in risky play, kids push their limits and go outside their comfort zones. And when they’re motivated to do so for personal reasons, they’re more determined to work through any challenges that may arise. “This practice alone shows us that children are brave and courageous and are willing to take a risk when the outcome is unknown,” Handel says. “This is

when their confidence and bravery can begin to emerge and grow. As they continue to play, they begin to feel capable, successful and independent.”

Handel gives an example of a child crossing monkey bars for the first time without help. That requires perseverance, determination and courage — especially if they've taken a tumble or two.

“When they finally achieve going across, they are now more confident in themselves and their abilities,” Handel says. Elsewhere at the museum, children can grow their confidence and bravery by trying low-risk risky play, such as:

• Trying out the climbing wall in ScienceWorks

• Roaming through the mirror maze in Carousel Wishes and Dreams

• Riding a “jumper” on the Carousel

• Digging for fragments of Terra Cotta Warriors in National Geographic Treasures of the Earth

• Reaching the top of the Tree House of Sports in the Riley Children’s Health Sports Legends Experience®

• Climbing the Pond, a structure surrounded by netting, in Playscape® (for kids 5 and under)

Nature Trails + Kid-friendly Hikes

Explore easy, scenic paths the whole family can enjoy.

Exploring the outdoors as a family is easier than ever, thanks to Indy’s wide network of parks, greenways and nature preserves designed with kids in mind. Families will find everything from stroller-friendly paved paths to wooded trails filled with creeks and wildlife. Whether you’re planning a quick afternoon outing or a longer weekend adventure, there’s no shortage of places where kids can stretch their legs and connect with nature.

Indianapolis

One of the most popular destinations for families is Eagle Creek Park , one of the largest parks in the area. With miles of trails ranging from easy loops to more rugged paths, it’s a great place for kids to explore at their own pace. The Eagle’s Crest and Red Trail loops are especially family-friendly, offering manageable distances and scenic views of the reservoir. The park also features a nature center, bird sanctuary, and open spaces perfect for picnicking.

Another great park is Holliday Park , known for its unique blend of nature and play. Families can hike short wooded trails along the White River before heading to the park’s newly reimagined naturethemed playground. The trails are relatively short and shaded, making them ideal for younger children.

For a more immersive nature experience, Fort Harrison State Park has a mix of paved and dirt trails through forests, wetlands and open fields. Trail 3 is a favorite among families, because it’s not too long and there is lots to see along the way.

If you’re looking for a paved option, the Monon Trail is a go-to choice. Stretching from downtown Indianapolis and all the way into Sheridan, this multi-use trail is perfect for walking, biking or scootering. Its flat terrain and easy access points make it especially great for families with strollers or younger kids.

Marott Woods Nature Preserve is a hidden gem, where families can explore quiet, wooded trails alongside a gently flowing creek. The trails are short but feel adventurous, with roots, small bridges, and plenty of natural features to keep kids engaged.

Families in the southern suburbs can explore Garfield Park , which features walking paths, gardens, and plenty of open space for kids to roam. The park’s conservatory is a great place to visit, especially during cooler months.

For a hiking experience in the city, White River State Park provides an easy, scenic option with paved paths along the river. It’s perfect for a relaxed walk with younger children while still enjoying beautiful views of downtown Indianapolis.

Hamilton County

In Carmel, Cool Creek Park combines easy trails with a nature center and playground. The wooded paths are well-maintained and relatively flat, making them ideal for beginners.

Fishers is home to Ritchey Woods Nature Preserve, a peaceful spot with short loop trails that wind through forests and wetlands. The preserve’s clearly marked paths and educational signage make it both accessible and engaging for kids.

In Noblesville, Forest Park offers a mix of wooded trails and open spaces. Families can enjoy a short hike before exploring the park’s playground, carousel, or picnic areas.

From paved city paths to rugged, wooded loops, Indianapolis has a wide range of trails and provides families with many ways to enjoy the outdoors together.

WORLD’S LARGEST BALL OF PAINT

One of the most famous Indiana attractions is the World's Largest Ball of Paint, located about an hour from Indy in Alexandria. It began as a baseball dipped in paint, and has grown into a massive, multi-colored sphere after decades of visitors adding layers of paint. Visitors can schedule a time to stop in and add their own layer!

OLD BEN, THE WORLD’S LARGEST STEER

Located in Kokomo’s Highland Park, the preserved Old Ben World's Largest Steer is a

massive 2.5-ton steer displayed for visitors more than a century after its death. Also in the same park is the World's Largest Sycamore Stump, a relic of what was once considered the largest tree of its kind. These stops highlight a classic roadside tradition: celebrating “the world’s largest” anything.

INDIANA MEDICAL HISTORY MUSEUM

Indianapolis also has its share of bizarre oddities. The Indiana Medical History Museum features preserved specimens, including its famously eerie “brains in jars” display, offering a mix of science, history and just enough weirdness to keep older kids intrigued.

COACH OF THE LEG LAMPS

Georgia and Meridian Sts. In downtown Indianapolis, you’ll find an unusual piece of public art: the Coach of the Leg Lamps. This sculp -

ture depicts legendary basketball coach John Wooden surrounded by disembodied legs, making it one of the more surreal roadside photo ops in the region. It’s a quick stop, but one that might leave you scratching your head.

ometimes the best laid plans can crash and burn the moment a gray cloud rolls across the sky. I’ll never forget one summer day growing up when my parents, brother and I were suddenly stuck inside because of the rain. We were disappointed at first. But before long, something shifted. We ended up outside anyway, singing and dancing in the rain and jumping in puddles like we didn’t have a care in the world. It became one of those core childhood memories that somehow turned a washed-out day into something magical.

Of course, as parents now, we know rainy day surprises don’t always feel magical at first. For special needs families especially, sudden changes in plans can completely throw off the day. A canceled outing or unexpected schedule change can feel overwhelming for kiddos who thrive on predictability and routine. Before immediately jumping into backup plans, it can help to pause and think about how our children best process change. Maybe that means reviewing a visual schedule, offering choices, allowing time to regroup, or simply slowing the pace for the day. You know your child best. Let’s honor what they need first.

Then? Bring on the fun.

Try a “B” Activity

One of my favorite rainy-day categories is what I call the “B” activities: balloons, bath tubs, and bubbles. Best of all, these are budget-friendly and easy to pull together quickly. A quick trip to the dollar or party store for balloons can instantly turn a living room into a game zone. Balloons are perfect for tossing, kicking, volleyball-style play, or simply watching float across the room.

Can’t use the water table outside? Turn bath time into an extended sensory play session instead. Add glow sticks, bath crayons, scoops, cups, or toy animals for extra fun.

And bubbles? We always keep a stash on hand. Bubble machines, bubble wands, or even blowing bubbles in the tub can go a long way on a gloomy day.

Create Indoor Adventures

Another rainy day lifesaver in our house is creating sensoryfriendly indoor adventures. Think blanket forts, couch cushion obstacle courses, scavenger hunts, dance parties, flashlight games or indoor “camping.” Sometimes the simplest ideas become the biggest hits. Painter’s tape on the floor can create roads, hopscotch paths or balance beams. Rainy days are the perfect excuse to open the imaginary restaurants, grocery stores, coffee shops, and play kitchens that take over your house. And if you read one of my previous articles, you already know about our beloved “Kitchen City” adventures.

Invite Friends

Sometimes, a little change in company can help, too. If your child enjoys social connection, consider phoning a friend and inviting another family member, neighbor or friend over to join the fun. A low-pressure playdate at home can completely shift the energy of the day without needing to brave the weather.

Release Your Expectations

And honestly? Sometimes the biggest win is letting go of expectations. Maybe the day doesn’t look productive. Maybe screen time increases a little. Maybe everyone stays in pajamas longer than planned. That’s OK, too.

And when all else fails, and safety ermits, throw on the rain boots and head outside anyway. Splash in puddles. Feel the raindrops. Watch the joy unfold. Because sometimes the backup plan becomes the memory your family talks about for years to come.
