Making Spirits Bright One of my family’s favorite things to do during the holidays is to drive to see Christmas lights.

We love to ooh and ahh over beautifully decorated houses, and marvel at the way twinkling lights can turn an ordinary night into a magical one. Fortunately for us, this holiday hobby is one of the activities we can still enjoy right now, because we can share in the spirit of the season from the safety and comfort of our car.

Some of our other favorite holiday activities, such as traveling or gathering with lots of family and friends, will have to be put on hold this year. But instead of lamenting this change, I’m trying to see this as an opportunity to make new traditions and celebrate the season in a new way.

For instance, ever since my husband and I started a family, I always wanted to celebrate Christmas day at home. I imagined that we’d lazily open presents on Christmas morning and feast on cinnamon rolls and breakfast casseroles that were prepared the night before. Then, we’d lounge around in our holiday pjs, sipping cocoa and watching

Christmas movies as the day turned into night.

Well, we’ve been a family unit for almost a decade, and that quaint image has never, ever happened. Not even once. Christmas morning, pre-pandemic, was usually spent quickly opening presents that Santa brought, and then getting dressed and heading out to visit other people’s houses to partake in their traditions.

But this year? This year is different. This year, we’re staying home. And that lovely, quaint picture of Christmas that I’ve been imaging for years? It’s happening in 2020. I’m going to make it happen, people. Because if there ever was a year to stay home, relax and make a happy holiday happen with the family in your household, then this is the year.

I wish you a happy (and safe!) holiday season with the ones you love!

Higher Life Cereal Café In 1863, James Caleb Jackson, owner of a medical sanitarium in western New York, created the world’s first breakfast cereal from graham flour dough. It was so hard that it needed to be soaked in milk overnight in order to become edible.

Fast forward almost a hundred years, and Kellogg’s Cereal answers the United States’ post-World War II baby boom with its first sugary cereal called “Sugar Frosted Flakes.” Its pitchman, Tony the Tiger, appealed to kids. By the 1970s, almost all grocery stores in the U.S. had colorful cereal aisles adorned with products like Boo Berry and Fruity Pebbles.

Fast forward another 50 years to the East End of London, where Alan and Gary Keery, from Belfast, came up with the idea of a cereal café after a long night out on the town.

They called it Cereal Killer Café. It inspired countless other such cafes.

This year hasn’t brought us a lot of things to celebrate, but here is one: Indy has its very own cereal café!

It’s called Higher Life Cereal Café, and you and your hungry brood can find it on Post Road on the east side of Indianapolis.

I took my boys there for what was unanimously “the best lunch of their entire lives.” Mostly because we have never nor will we probably have a lunch so loaded with sugar upon sugar.

Because the majority of the fun at a cereal café is choosing what to put with what, I absolutely must share what we each chose to have. Please know that these menu choices were as carefully constructed as their Christmas wish list.

My oldest son ordered birthday cake ice cream with cotton candy Cap’n Crunch (who knew this flavor even existed?) and, as if that wasn’t enough, Hershey’s chocolate syrup. My middle son, a chocoholic like me, ordered chocolate ice cream with chocolate Lucky Charms, mini-marshmallows, and, of course, Hershey’s chocolate syrup. My youngest son didn’t get cereal, but instead chose a toasted cinnamon roll Pop-Tart with vanilla ice cream, mini marshmallows and whipped cream. An 80s kid myself, I went for the Eggo waffle with vanilla ice cream, Chips Ahoy cereal and Hershey’s chocolate syrup.

Higher Life Cereal Café was a fun, playful outing that I would recommend to anyone!

Start a New Holiday Tradition at The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis It might not be an official designation, but “change” is the word of the year. Time continues to tick away and the holidays are right around the corner with new ways of honoring old traditions — including those that include a certain Jolly Old Elf.

Speaking of letters to Santa, children can now send him a virtual letter! Parents can visit childrensmuseum.org/santa to get started on wish lists. After kids send their letters, grown-ups can sign children up to receive personalized updates from Santa throughout the holiday season.

Santa will be part of a unique physically distanced photo opportunity for families at The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis — perfect for Instagram, Facebook and Twitter.

He will sit in his sleigh preparing for f light as good little girls and boys pose alongside with their grownups. It could be the perfect new holiday card to send to friends and family. Another picturesque option might be in front of the Yule Slide. While we can’t zip down it this year due to pandemic precautions, there will be giant stuffed animals serving as a charming backdrop. Don’t forget a festive mask that must remain on throughout the museum, including during photos.

On select days, families can join Santa’s Workshop where they can decorate and assemble their own wooden toy, create a candy cane ornament, and design their own stationery to write a letter to Santa (registration fee required for this program).

Those looking to ring in the New Year will want to mark their calendars for Countdown to Noon on December 31. Then, families can close their eyes and wash away the challenges of 2020 and splash into 2021 with North America’s largest water clock.

But not to fear: Indianapolis offers lots of fun opportunities for winter ‘staycation’ fun — you just need to know where to look!

Devote a staycation weekend to these incredible family-friendly places in Indianapolis. (Please note: most of these attractions have special COVID-19 policies in place, so be sure to check websites ahead of time and plan your trip accordingly!)

Full STEAM Ahead Indianapolis is home to the world’s largest children’s museum, and winter break is the perfect time to really experience it. The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis is home to an ever-changing carousel of special exhibits. Take Me There: Greece will satisfy your appetite for travel without ever leaving Indiana and Barbie: You Can Be Anything packs a girl-powered punch of nostalgia. Permanent exhibits include Dinosphere and an out-of-this-world space station.

And if you’re in the mood for a drive, buckle up! The Muncie Children’s Museum is an easy 70-minute trip from Indy, and is especially fun for the 6 and under crowd. Or head west to the Terra Haute Children’s Museum, three floors of STEAM-powered fun.

Take a Walking Tour Not to brag, but downtown Indianapolis is kind of the coolest. We’ve put together a fun scavenger hunt across Mile Square, and as an added bonus, all of these attractions are free to check out. Start at the heart of it all — the Indiana Soldiers and Sailors Monument. From the monument’s Observatory, you can experience panoramic views of the city skyline; it’s free to experience and can be reached via elevator or a kid-friendly, 330-step climb.

From there, head to University Park and go sculpture sighting. Have kids find sculptures in honor of presidents Benjamin Harrison and Abraham Lincoln, and former vice president Schuyler Colfax. And of course, stop by Depew Fountain for a family selfie!

All this exploring is sure to work up an appetite, and luckily, Jack’s Donuts is a quick, quarter-mile walk from Mile Square. (Get a dozen tiger buns — you won’t regret it!)

Visit Fun Tourist Attractions Cars and basketball: That’s what Indy is known for! Revel in racecars by visiting Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum and Dallara IndyCar Factory, two surefire crowd pleasers. Then show your Hoosier pride at the NCAA Hall of Champions.

And for a primer in all things Indiana, look no further than the Indiana State Museum. The coolest part of this museum is actually outdoors: along the exterior of the museum, there are artworks representing all 92 counties in Indiana.

Finally, for foodies, there’s no better place than Indianapolis City Market. This public market is a big source of Indy pride — it’s listed in the National Register of Historic Places and is a vibrant downtown event destination (see: the 2012 Super Bowl). Be sure to stop by Gomez BBQ for the best pulled pork sandwich in town.

Winter Fun Looking for an outdoor adventure? Head to Perfect North Slopes! This 200-acre ski and tubing resort offers fun for the whole family. Child, adult and adaptive lessons are offered, with a lesson included for first-timers with every lift ticket purchased. Feel the need for speed? Sign up for racing lessons. Training and practice sessions are available for ages 7 and up. Don’t leave without taking a ride down one of their 26 tubing lanes, including “super lanes” that allow your entire family to slide down together.

Meanwhile, hit the rinks at a local ice arena; the Fuel Tank at Fishers and Carmel Ice Stadium are two fun, indoor options for families. (And if you’re feeling a little extra, take a drive to see the Veal’s Ice Tree, one of the area’s coolest winter attractions.)

But don’t let the cold keep you indoors — bundle up and take a hike this winter! Holliday Park, Eagle Creek Park and Newfields boast picturesque parks and trails perfect for enjoying when the weather turns cold.

Next-Level Staycation Ideas Are you the kind of person who puts holiday lights up Nov. 1? Then you’ll love Santa Claus! This close-to-home destination is all Christmas, all the time. In December, the Santa Claus Land of Lights is perhaps the best outdoor light display in the area. Rent a cottage and enjoy a cozy, Hallmark-movie-level getaway in this charming city.

Or, stay closer to home and book a night or two at one of Downtown Indianapolis’s dazzling hotels. Downtown Indy boasts an amazing skywalk that connects hotels to the convention center and other attractions, so you can explore without having to brave the cold. And as you start making your winter break staycation plans, be sure to look into an Indy Attraction Pass. This new pass offers families the opportunity to plan a day (or weekend) of fun at discounted rates. Participating attractions include the Children's Museum and Indianapolis Zoo. Check it out and save big on the city’s best attractions. Plus, passes are delivered to your phone for easy, touch-free admission.

2020 is finally coming to a close, and that’s surely something to celebrate. So, organize some staycation plans and make it your best winter break ever!

he transition from daycare or

preschool to kindergarten is typically

many children. This transition can feel significant, and because of that, it can sometimes feel overwhelming for parents and children alike. So, what can parents do to make the transition from preschool to kindergarten go as smoothly as possible?

“There are lots of activities parents can do at home,” says Amanda Dillon, kindergarten teacher at Prairie Trace Elementary in Carmel and 2019 Stephen A. Backer Teacher of the Year. “Reading to children daily is at the top of the list. Playing board games and encouraging conversations during play time helps develop oral language. Turning simple academic activities into games are also ways to enrich children.”

Linda Foley, assistant director and 3s and 4s teacher at Meridian Hills Cooperative Nursery School & Kindergarten, says that even simple things, such as pointing out what you see as you go about your day, helps with growth and development.

“Make note of similarities, differences, sizes, shapes and colors,” Foley says. “Do this in everyday life, at home, on a walk, at the grocery. Verbalize what you are doing: folding laundry, planting f lowers, cutting celery. Identifying your actions.”

Maureen Weber, CEO of Early Learning Indiana, notes that with the pandemic, some kids who would normally be in preschool and pre-kindergarten programs are not, and are instead staying home.

“They are missing out on that routine of getting up and going to school,” Weber says. “But there are many things that parents and caregivers can do at home.” The Day Early Learning website offers links to resources and activities that families can do with their children to keep the learning happening at home.

There is no magic ball that will let you know when your preschooler is ready for kindergarten. But there are some signs that might indicate your child is ready for that next step.

The Mayo Clinic lists the following developmental milestones as pivotal in deciding whether a child is ready for kindergarten success. These milestones include demonstrating a curiosity or interest in learning new things, taking turns and cooperating with peers, and following instructions. Fortunately, a quality preschool will help your child meet these important milestones.

At Meridian Hills Cooperative, for example, preschoolers work on building skills that they will use once they move on to kindergarten, but are also given the freedom to play, explore and learn at their own pace.

Jill Schipp, principal of Prairie Trace Elementary School, reminds parents that “students enter kindergarten with many different experiences,” she says.

“Not all students attend preschool, and kindergarten teachers are aware of that.

Teachers assess the kids and meet them where they are academically.”

Weber emphasizes that one of the best things parents can do to help their child get ready for kindergarten is to enroll them in a quality preschool program.

“[Preschool] teaches them how to be ready for full-day school, gives them an idea of what school looks like, lets them collaborate with friends, and teaches them how not to give up when they’re faced with a challenge,” she says.

These are all skills that will help set up a child for school – and also a lifetime of learning.

earning to swim is an important developmental

milestone that leaves children feeling accomplished

and has parents breathing sighs of relief. We want our children to learn to swim, and look forward to the day when they learn to move around freely in the water. A great way to learn this valuable skill is through swim lessons. And the good news is you don’t have to wait for summer to roll back around to get your child started.

“Water is not seasonal, therefore water safety should not be seasonal!” says Lindsay Thayer, owner of Aqua-Tots Swim School in Indianapolis.

“It’s important to prioritize swim lessons year round so there is not a regression in skills over the winter, and to keep water safety at the top of your mind. With the combination of formal swimming instruction, adult supervision and conversations on water safety, drownings are 100% preventable.”

Thayer says that parents and guardians should be speaking with their children about how to be safe around, and in, water on a regular basis. “By discussing safe boundaries, we can equip our children with the knowledge they need to know the dangers of water,” Thayer says.

“Children also experience mental and health benefits such as lower stress levels, higher confidence, and happiness.”

Andrew Joseph, area manager for Goldfish Swim School in Carmel, agrees that children can retain skills, like swimming, much better if they are consistently practicing them. In addition to retaining the skills, swimming is also a great form of exercise during the dreary months.

With COVID-19 still at the forefront of everyone’s minds, some parents might feel a bit apprehensive about signing their children up for indoor lessons. However, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has stated that chlorine water is not a conductor of COVID-19. Many swim schools and places that offer swimming are also stepping up their cleaning and safety measures.

“At Goldfish, we have spaced classes six feet apart, stepped up cleaning procedures between every class, and are encouraging social distancing and mask use in the facility,” Joseph says. “We also have changed traffic flow in the facility, and ask that you arrive only five minutes prior to lessons. We are only allowing one caregiver per swimmer to promote more social distancing.”

Aqua-Tots also has systems in place to ensure the safety of those entering their building. “At Aqua-Tots, we developed our Full Circle of Safety Program to enhance our health and safety measures,” Thayer says. “These extraordinary safety protocols include limiting our visitors to one parent or guardian per child, face coverings required when in the lobby, instructors wearing face shields in the pool, a cleaning attendant on duty at all times sanitizing common surface areas, limited touchpoints and staggered swim lesson times to avoid any crowding.”

According to the National Institutes of Health, participating in formal swimming lessons can reduce the risk of drowning by 88% in children between the ages of 1 to 4 years old. Not only will year-round swim lessons teach your child the skills they need to keep them safe around the water, but they will also provide fun exercise in the cold-weather months as they splash and kick the winter blues away.

“Exercise is a mood enhancer, and doing it at Goldfish with our tropical decor can definitely help with those winter blues,” Joseph says. “The social aspect of taking lessons in our current environment can be very helpful to kids, and the developmental aspect is always underrated.

Swimming has been shown to hasten developmental abilities relating to social, spatial, cognitive and overall brain development.”

So, when should parents consider signing their children up for lessons?

There is no better time to start than the present. The earlier children are introduced to the water, the greater the chance the child will feel comfortable.

MANAGING YOUR CHILD’S MENTAL HEALTH DURING A PANDEMIC

How you can help your child cope with this time of stress and uncertainty.

It’s not news that the COVID-19 pandemic has affected our collective mental health. Quarantines, unpredictable school schedules, and general disruption of everyday life has led to increased depression and anxiety, and our children haven’t been spared. For kids, pandemic-related mental health issues can take on varied forms, including irritability and sudden outbursts, sleeplessness, whining and clinginess, worries about the future, and unexplained physical symptoms, like headaches and stomach aches.

As we manage working from home while homeschooling, among other myriad hurdles thrown onto our plates as a result of the pandemic, we parents have the extra challenge of helping our children weather these troubling times. In addition to taking care of our own mental health, we’re called to create an environment where our children can not only cope but thrive. Here are some strategies that can help.

Talk Openly Open up the lines of communication by talking with your children in ageappropriate ways about the fears and worries they’re facing. “Parents can help their children identify and name the emotions kids are experiencing and work together to find ways to cope,” says Gabriela Rodriguez, PhD, child psychologist with Riley Children’s Health. A simple picture book,

like How Are You Feeling Today? by Molly Potter, can help younger children put words to their feelings.

Keep in mind your children may ask a lot of questions during this time — sometimes the same ones repeatedly. They may be trying to wrap their heads around abstract concepts or seeking reassurance, so do your best to understand the motivation behind the questions. You might respond by asking them about their worries or what they already know about the situation to encourage them to share.

Practice Awareness If you notice differences in your child’s mood or behavior, take a moment to assess the situation. Note when mental health symptoms rise and wane. By tapping into these patterns, you can help your child anticipate these shifts and better control the outcomes. Also be aware of your own anxieties and reactions, as they can affect your child, as well.

Find a Routine The pandemic has forced us all to be flexible in many ways, and that can be good, but as Rodriguez notes, children thrive on consistency and routine. “They make kids feel safe and secure,” she says.

Try starting the morning by letting kids know what the day holds, she recommends. Hold a meeting over breakfast or post a daily schedule like teachers do — in words for older kids or visuals for younger ones. This doesn’t have to include hour-by-hour detail, just enough information to let them know what’s expected of them.

Find a rhythm for normal activities, such as family meals and reading together at bedtime, to allow a focused time for connection.

On weekends, when schedules are more relaxed, try to keep sleep and wake times within an hour of weekdays to regulate their internal clocks and help sleep come easier.

Focus on What Can Be Controlled The pandemic has left many kids feeling out of control, exacerbating feelings of anxiety or depression. However, helping children focus on what they can control can help provide a sense of grounding.

In moments of stress, this may look like using coping strategies, like breathing exercises or deep muscle relaxation, Rodriguez says. For the first, take slow, deep breaths together, providing a visual, like a pinwheel or bubbles, to help guide younger children. For the latter, slowly tense and relax each muscle or muscle group, working your way through the body until the uncomfortable emotions have quelled.

Search videos online for help with either of these techniques.

When grieving cancelled birthdays and holidays, it might be helpful to imagine together what these celebrations will look like when the pandemic is over. You can also think creatively about ways to create a sense of normalcy even when social distancing is required. Host birthday celebrations on Zoom, plan an online family game night between your children and their grandparents, or set up a fun outdoor scavenger hunt.

“We don’t want to wait until we are feeling extremely stressed to start practicing these strategies,” Rodriguez says. “It’s most helpful to build practicing these strategies into our regular routine, so that we are ready to use them when we need them.”

Find Professional Help, If Needed If distress increases, daily life becomes disrupted or family relationships are affected, you may need to seek out additional help for your child. Talk with your child’s pediatrician or school for help locating resources.

Pandemic life has posed many challenges for parents and children alike. Don’t forget to allow yourself some grace as you work to figure out this new way of living and keep the sanity within your household.

Help your child manage the chaos of the holidays, while also making the most of this joyous season.

When you think of the holidays, what comes to mind? Maybe it’s decorating cookies, gathering around the table with loved ones, or singing your favorite songs. The holidays are filled with joy, but they can also bring on a lot of other emotions, including stress. Parents aren’t the only ones who feel the complicated emotions of the season.

Children are susceptible to them, too. And this especially can be the case for children with special needs who rely on structure and consistency to feel secure.

So, what can parents can do to help their children with special needs to prepare for the holidays? Child/ adolescent therapists at Indy Child Therapist Aaron N. Hensley MSW, LCSW and Charity Rose MSW, LSW, have some tips to help parents make the season merry and bright for their children.

could be coloring, listening to music, drawing or anything your child sees as calming. Second, process with them. Ask them what caused the stress. Lastly, review expectations, tell them you love them and return to desired activities.

Rose: Do something with them they like to do, and then talk to them about what is making them stressed. You may be able to alleviate some of that stress once you figure out what is causing it.

How can I help prepare my child for the excitement, and stress, of the holiday season?

Having clear expectations allows children to know what is expected, and how they can get help if they start feeling overwhelmed.

Hensley: The best thing parents can do is to set schedules, communicate daily plans and set clear expectations. These three seemingly small suggestions will make a world of difference.

Children do best when they know what to expect, what is expected of them, and how their day will go.

Setting a schedule allows your child to have routine, which helps alleviate stress of “what's next?”

Communication is crucial with children. Communicating with children about daily plans allows children to process changes to their schedule, and also makes them feel like they are part of the planning process. Lastly, let them know what you expect of them.

Rose: Do holiday activities that help remind your child what the holiday typically looks like. Have fun things to do around the holiday, and leading up to it, to make it a good experience for your child. Looking at pictures from past holidays may help them remember the fun of the season.

When my child is overwhelmed, what can I do to help alleviate that stress?

Hensley: First, reduce sensory input — extreme lighting, loud noises, large crowds — and engage them in calming activities. That

Hensley: I frequently use the saying “dysregulated adults lead to dysregulated children.” We all know the holidays can be a very stressful time, and this year will be no exception. However, to keep kids calm and stress-free, parents need to be calm and stress-free.

Children will mimic the behavior and emotions of their parents, so it's very important that we show them how to manage stress. Take time to enjoy your family this holiday season, and remember that nothing is more important than the well-being of your children.
