Making Spirits Bright One of my family’s favorite things to do during the holidays is to drive to see Christmas lights. We love to ooh and ahh over beautifully decorated houses, and marvel at the way twinkling lights can turn an ordinary night into a magical one. Fortunately for us, this holiday hobby is one of the activities we can still enjoy right now, because we can share in the spirit of the season from the safety and comfort of our car. Some of our other favorite holiday activities, such as traveling or gathering with lots of family and friends, will have to be put on hold this year. But instead of lamenting this change, I’m trying to see this as an opportunity to make new traditions and celebrate the season in a new way. For instance, ever since my husband and I started a family, I always wanted to celebrate Christmas day at home. I imagined that we’d lazily open presents on Christmas morning and feast on cinnamon rolls and breakfast casseroles that were prepared the night before. Then, we’d lounge around in our

06

holiday pjs, sipping cocoa and watching Christmas movies as the day turned into night. Well, we’ve been a family unit for almost a decade, and that quaint image has never, ever happened. Not even once. Christmas morning, pre-pandemic, was usually spent quickly opening presents that Santa brought, and then getting dressed and heading out to visit other people’s houses to partake in their traditions. But this year? This year is different. This year, we’re staying home. And that lovely, quaint picture of Christmas that I’ve been imaging for years? It’s happening in 2020. I’m going to make it happen, people. Because if there ever was a year to stay home, relax and make a happy holiday happen with the family in your household, then this is the year. I wish you a happy (and safe!) holiday season with the ones you love!

2020

has put a damper on so many things, including many families’ winter break getaway plans. But not to fear: Southwest Ohio offers lots of fun opportunities for winter ‘staycation’ fun — you just need to know where to look!

Zoo (Hippo Cove and the brand-new Roo Valley are must-visit attractions), then head to Newport Aquarium for everything under the sea.

Devote a staycation weekend to these incredible family-friendly places in Southwest Ohio. (Please note: most of these attractions have special COVID-19 policies in place, so be sure to check websites ahead of time and plan your trip accordingly!)

Are you into the arts? Cincinnati is an art lover’s paradise! Between the Cincinnati Art Museum (CAM), Contemporary Arts Center (CAC) and Taft Museum of Art, you can easily spend a weekend immersed in the visual arts. Bonus: Admission to CAM and CAC is always free, and admission to the Taft is free on Sundays. Prefer a physically distant trek outdoors? Bundle up and take a mural tour with ArtWorks Cincinnati. Many of these stunning works of art showcase Cincinnati history, making this activity both educational and Insta-worthy.

Full STEAM Ahead Make holiday break fun and educational. The Cincinnati Museum Center is a one-stop shop for all things STEAM. Between the Dinosaur Gallery, Science Interactives Gallery, Neil Armstrong Exploration Gallery and brand-new You Are Here exhibit, there are so many reasons to visit Cincinnati Museum Center this winter. Plus, right now, Holiday Junction Featuring the Duke Energy Holiday Trains is (literally) running, making this Cincy gem a must-visit over winter break. Dayton parents, meanwhile, swear by the Boonshoft Museum. This under-the-radar gem features an impressive number of permanent and rotating exhibits, including a planetarium, next-level water play area and indoor zoo complete with meerkats and a sloth. And speaking of animals, for little animal lovers, Cincinnati packs a one-two punch: Explore the wild and wonderful world at Cincinnati

Hit Up Some Tourist Faves

While you’re in Downtown Cincy, stop by Findlay Market, Ohio's oldest continuously operated public market. Be unabashedly Cincinnati and try a goetta sandwich from Eckerlin Meats — it’s rumored to be the best in town. Do your kids prefer trains? Plan a weekend loving on locomotives in Southwest Ohio. First, check out EnterTRAINment Junction, the world’s largest indoor train display. Right now, “Christmas at the Junction” is happening and kids can pay a visit to Mr. Claus. Next, chug on up 1-75 to Dayton’s Carillion Historical Park: The James F. Dicke Family Transportation Center boasts five rail cars and a half dozen other historical modes of transportation. Most notably, the Transportation Center houses the oldest American-made locomotive December 2020 I ohParent.com

in the U.S., the 1835 “John Quincy Adams,” built by the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad and used until the 1890s.

Out-of-the-Box Faves Located in Fairfield, Jungle Jim’s is a legendary food lover’s destination in Southwest Ohio, and people travel from all over the Midwest to visit. It’s so much more than a grocery store, as they carry a diverse selection of items from all over the world, including an entire section devoted to hot sauce. Cincinnati’s American Sign Museum is a glowing treasure trove of American pop-culture history. The American Sign Museum celebrates the art (and artistry) that went into the bright, eye-catching signs in the first half of the 20th century. The signs blink, flash and spin, making this attraction an accessible and fun place to visit. And up in Yellow Springs, Youngs Jersey Dairy is a cult favorite. While activities are limited during the winter, kids will love visiting the farm animals and enjoying a fresh scoop of house-made ice cream at The Dairy Store.

Winter Fun Looking for an outdoor adventure? Head to Perfect North Slopes! This 200-acre ski and tubing resort offers fun for the whole family. Child, adult and adaptive lessons are offered, with a lesson included for first-timers with every lift ticket purchased. Feel the need for speed? Sign up for racing lessons. Training and practice sessions are available for ages 7 and up. Don’t leave without taking a ride down one of their 26 tubing lanes, including “super lanes” that allow your entire family to slide down together.

14

ohParent.com I December 2020

Meanwhile, hit the rinks at Cincinnati’s Fountain Square Ice Rink (advance reservations are required), Summit Park’s Ice Rink (an under-the-radar fave), Dayton’s MetroPark Ice Rink or Goggin Ice Center, where the Miami University RedHawks practice. Another idea? Bundle up and take a hike! Great Parks of Hamilton County, Cincinnati Parks, Cincinnati Nature Center and Five Rivers MetroParks all boast picturesque parks and trails perfect for enjoying when the weather turns cold.

Ultimate Staycation Ideas Looking for a night away? You don’t have to travel far! Adventure awaits in Warren County (Ohio’s Largest Playground) at Great Wolf Lodge. This vacation destination has everything your family desires under one roof: an indoor water park, activities, spa, games and delicious dining options. It’s basically an all-inclusive family getaway in Ohio. Prefer more of a “rugged” experience? Travel a bit north to Hueston Woods Lodge. There you can rent a cabin in the woods and enjoy beautiful a weekend of R&R. (We recommend buying a s’mores kit and having a bonfire outdoors!)

2020 is finally coming to a close, and that’s surely something to celebrate. So, organize some staycation plans and make it your best winter break ever!

HIDDEN GEMS

WORDS BY SARAH MCCOSHAM

Summit Park Ice Rink December’s here, and this year, we’re all looking for fun things to do outside. If you’re in search of a fun, socially distant, family-approved, budget-friendly option (that’s a tall order!), you’ll find it at Summit Park. The Warm 98.5 Ice Rink at Summit Park is located underneath the park’s blue and green Glass Canopy. The rink opened for its fourth season in November, and is a welcome winter tradition for local families this year. You check in and rent your skates at a large, heated tent by the rink. Admission and skate rental are just $6 per person ages 4 and up, and there are plenty of friendly helpers to make checking in fast and easy. (If you have a group of three or more, admission and skate rental drop to just $5.)

If you’re feeling a little apprehensive about letting your kids loose on the ice, don’t be. There are large skating aids for the kids to use on the ice, available on a first come, first serve basis. They look like oversized baby walkers, and are very helpful in getting small skaters acclimated to the slippery surface. And don’t worry — the crew at Summit Park adhere to rigorous cleaning guidelines to keep your family safe! For parents worried about the logistics of ice skating, I highly recommend starting at Summit Park. With its central location, convenient parking, accessible size and reasonable rates, Summit Park’s Ice Rink makes for a fun and memorable family outing! Summit Park Ice Rink is open daily through January 3, with hours varying by day.

H OW TO H E L P YO U R LIT TLE PRESCHOOLER M A K E T H AT B I G T R A N S I T I O N .

WORDS BY STEFFY MCCOURT AND NICOLE SIPE

he transition from daycare or preschool to kindergarten is typically the start of formal, daily education for many children. This transition can feel significant, and because of that, it can sometimes feel overwhelming for parents and children alike. So, what can parents do to make the transition from preschool to kindergarten go as smoothly as possible?

18

ohParent.com I December 2020

“There are a lot of things that parents naturally do that get their children ready for kindergarten,” says Emilie Parry, owner and director of Creative Tots Mason. “Things like reading to them, fostering friendships and allowing them to explore new experiences, and explaining to them what they are seeing or doing for the first time.” Cincinnati mom Jennifer Bross’ twins, Violet and Logan, have been in preschool since they were both 1 year old. Along with a quality preschool, Bross credits their success in kindergarten to all the reading they did at home. “They’ve developed such beautiful little imaginations and great vocabularies,” Bross says. Kindergarten teachers Theresa Bell and Megan Kelly, of Children’s Meeting House Montessori School in Loveland, say that the best thing parents can do to prepare their child for preschool and kindergarten — whether in a Montessori environment or not — is to help foster their independence.

“Teach and encourage children to dress themselves, put on their own shoes and coats, and get their own snacks,” Bell and Kelly say. “Also, trust them to complete simple tasks on their own. These are great practical life skills that will help them feel prepared and comfortable within the classroom.” Parry agrees. “It is important that a preschooler is able to walk into a classroom and do things independently and think like a leader,” she says. “Parents can encourage them to try new things and ask questions when they don’t understand something or if they are really interested in something.”

There is no magic ball that will let you know when your preschooler is ready for kindergarten. But there are some signs that might indicate your child is ready for that next step. The Mayo Clinic lists the following developmental milestones as pivotal in deciding whether a child is ready for kindergarten success. These milestones include demonstrating a curiosity or interest in learning new things, taking turns and cooperating with peers, and following instructions. Fortunately, a quality preschool will help your child meet these important milestones.

“We work a lot on helping the students to be independently ready for the kindergarten classroom,” Parry says. “We encourage them to be leaders through the choices they make, following instructions the first time, taking care of our environment and respecting others and ourselves. We help to lay the foundation for reading and writing as well as fundamental math concepts. The students are little sponges and love learning new things that interest them.”

And if a child isn’t quite the age for kindergarten? Preschools can help with that, too.

“The beauty of a Montessori classroom is that we can meet each child where they are,” Bell and Kelly say. “If the child is soaring academically but is too young to be in kindergarten, we get to give them lessons on the same things the kindergarten children are working on. We can take any child wherever they are able to go academically since we educate to the individual needs of each child.”

These are all skills that will help set up a child for school – and also a lifetime of learning.

RACHAEL DUPREE

MANAGING YOUR CHILD’S MENTAL HEALTH DURING A PANDEMIC

How you can help your child cope with this time of stress and uncertainty. It’s not news that the COVID-19 pandemic has affected our collective mental health. Quarantines, unpredictable school schedules, and general disruption of everyday life has led to increased depression and anxiety, and our children haven’t been spared. For kids, pandemic-related mental health issues can take on varied forms, including irritability and sudden outbursts, sleeplessness, whining and clinginess, worries about the future, and unexplained physical symptoms, like headaches and stomach aches.

name their emotions and work together to find ways to manage them. A simple picture book, like How Are You Feeling Today? by Molly Potter, can help younger children put words to their feelings. Keep in mind your children may ask a lot of questions during this time — sometimes the same ones repeatedly. They may be trying to wrap their heads around abstract concepts or seeking reassurance, Strawn says, so do your best to understand the motivation behind the questions. You may respond by asking them about their worries or what they already know about the situation to encourage them to share.

Find a Routine The pandemic has forced us all to be flexible in many ways, and that can be good, but children also thrive on consistency to feel safe and secure.

As we manage working from home while homeschooling, among other myriad hurdles thrown onto our plates as a result of the pandemic, we parents have the extra challenge of helping our children weather these troubling times. In addition to taking care of our own mental health, we’re called to create an environment where our children can not only cope but thrive. Here are some strategies that can help.

Try starting the morning by letting kids know what the day holds. Have a meeting over breakfast or post a daily schedule like teachers do — in words for older kids or visuals for younger ones. This doesn’t have to include hour-by-hour detail, just enough information to let them know what’s expected of them.

Practice Awareness

“Carve out special time to do normal things or do things to replace what’s been taken by the pandemic,” Strawn says, such as family meals and reading together at bedtime, allowing focused time for connection.

If you notice differences in your child’s mood or behavior, take a moment to assess the situation, recommends Dr. Jeff Strawn, MD, FAACAP, from the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neuroscience at the University of Cincinnati. Note when mental health symptoms rise and wane. By tapping into these patterns, you can help your child anticipate these shifts and better control the outcomes. Also, be aware of your own anxieties and reactions, he says, as they can affect your child, as well.

Talk Openly Open up the lines of communication by talking with your children in age-appropriate ways about their fears and worries. Help them identify and

On weekends, when schedules are more relaxed, try to keep sleep and wake times within an hour of weekdays to regulate their internal clocks and help sleep come easier.

Focus on What Can Be Controlled The pandemic has left many kids feeling out of control, exacerbating feelings of anxiety or depression. However, helping children focus on what they can control can help provide a sense of grounding. December 2020 I ohParent.com

In moments of stress, this may look like using coping strategies, like breathing exercises or deep muscle relaxation. For the first, take slow, deep breaths together, providing a visual, like a pinwheel or bubbles, to help guide younger children. For the latter, slowly tense and relax each muscle or muscle group, working your way through the body until the uncomfortable emotions have quelled. Search videos online for help with either of these techniques. When grieving cancelled birthdays and holidays, Strawn says it may be helpful to imagine together what these celebrations will look like when the pandemic is over. You can also think creatively about ways to create a sense of normalcy even when social distancing is required. Host birthday celebrations on Zoom, plan an online family game night between your children and their grandparents, or set up a fun outdoor scavenger hunt. The important thing to remember is to not wait until points of extreme stress to start practicing these strategies. Instead, start working them into your life now, so you can draw on them when necessary.

Find Professional Help, If Needed If distress increases, daily life becomes disrupted, or family relationships are affected, you may need to seek out additional help for your child. Talk with your child’s pediatrician or school for help locating resources. Pandemic life has posed many challenges for parents and children alike. Don’t forget to allow yourself some grace as you work to figure out this new way of living and keep the sanity within your household.
