Tuning into Teens

T

he changes are subtle at first – that transformation from child to teen. In our house it was the shoes. My daughter was taking mine from my closet. Did we really wear the same size now? My son’s shift to teenagerhood was more pronounced – literally, with a sudden comical crack in his voice. He couldn’t get through a sentence without his words travelling up and down the scale. Now the signs of their adolescence are all around me – especially on the bathroom sink they share with its daily accumulation of makeup and flat irons, razors and pimple cream. There is no denying that they’re on the fast track to growing up, whether I’m ready for it or not.

If you’ve got a teen or tween at home, you are likely entering into some new territory. What one issue affects their life most right now? If you said technology, you are in sync with many parents. It can be hard to compete with the buzz of incoming texts, the latest posts on social media sites and the appeal of online gaming. Radioactive Seed Offers New Option for Breast Cancer Patients A:

Getting back an abnormal mammogram scan can be overwhelming, especially if surgery may be involved. Luckily, there’s a new procedure that makes breast cancer surgery much more precise and comfortable, and the St. Vincent Carmel Women’s Center is the first in central Indiana to offer this technology. Fellowship-trained breast surgeon Dr. Erica Giblin answers questions about this new technology called radioactive seed localization (RSL).

The rationale for radioactive seed localization is to allow us to identify and remove nonpalpable (too small to feel) breast tumors during surgery. The old standard approach, which is still common in most hospitals, is to use a wire that pokes out of the skin and acts as a guide for the surgeon to locate and remove the nodule. With RSL the seed acts as a beacon that allows us to identify the nodules during surgery in a much more accurate and pain-free manner.

Q:

Why did the St. Vincent Carmel Women’s Center adopt the use of radioactive seed localization?

How does RSL differ from the standard approach to breast cancer surgery?

A:

Aside from it being more comfortable for the patient and more accurate for the surgeon, it’s also more convenient for everyone involved. With the old approach, the wire had to be inserted through the skin and into the breast by the radiologist on the day of the surgery, which could sometimes take longer than expected and lead to a delay in surgery. However, with the seed placement, we use a thin needle to place a very small iodine seed into the breast nodule up to five days before surgery. The patient can’t see it or feel it, and we remove it with the nodule at the time of surgery. By inserting the seed five days before surgery, there’s more flexibility and convenience for patients in scheduling their operation day and time.

Q:

Are there other benefits to using RSL for locating breast cancer tumors?

A:

With the level of accuracy that RSL provides, we can find the most direct access point to the area in question, which means minimal scaring that is more cosmetically preferable.

Q: A:

Who would be a candidate for RSL?

Any woman who has a non-palpable tumor that we’re getting ready to remove to see if it’s breast cancer. So, a large amount of women would be candidates for that. Now, somebody with a palpable breast tumor does not need RSL. In those cases, I can feel the tumor at the time of surgery, so I know where the area is that I need to take out.

Q:

Is there anything else women should know about RSL or breast cancer?

A:

As I mentioned before, RSL is used for detecting small tumors that cannot be felt by touch.

That means you wouldn’t detect them yourself during a self-breast exam, which really helps emphasize the importance of regular mammogram screenings. Women should have a baseline screening at age 40, and now they can find comfort in knowing that if we find any abnormalities that need removed, there’s an easy and comfortable way to go about doing that at the St. Vincent Carmel Women’s Center.

Fall Fun Awaits at the Indianapolis Zoo Enjoy four weekends of activities during ZooBoo presented by Central Indiana Honda Dealers Carla Knapp, The Indianapolis Zoo

Mild temperatures and active animals make fall one of the best times to visit the Indianapolis Zoo. Add in four weekends of activities during ZooBoo presented by Central Indiana Honda Dealers, and guests are set for a spook-tacular family outing.

The annual Halloween event runs Oct. 2-4, 9-11, 16-18 and 23-25, and provides a family-friendly experience featuring everyone’s favorite critters along with all the fun activities the season has to offer. The Zoo opens at 9 am daily, so guests are encouraged to come out early then stay late for ZooBoo activities from 2-7pm.

The little ones can wear their favorite wild costumes and bring a reusable goodie bag to collect treats throughout Plains at five stations presented by Endangered Species Chocolate, FedEx and the Goddard School. Adults are encouraged to dress up as well, though masks are only permitted for children age 12 and under.

Even the animals get into the spirit of the season with special animal keeper chats. The pumpkin-splattering fun of the Elephant Pumpkin Smash presented by Sam’s Club is always a guest favorite. Visitors can also watch critters throughout the Zoo enjoying Halloween-themed enrichment.

The Zoo’s rides will also feature a festive twist, including the Round-GoMerry – the carousel that moves in reverse – and the White River Junction Train presented by Marathon, which offers an enchanted ride with a special treat at the end.

ZooBoo activities are free for Zoo members and included with regular admission.

Transform Into a Pirate This Halloween Ashley Shuler

Four easy steps to get into character Pirates have sailed into our hearts for generations through classic books and movies. Their familiar eye patches and peg legs pop up most often around Halloween – an opportune time to transform yourself into a new character and embark on an adventurous journey.

Fictionally sailing in search of buried treasure with your child is a great way to learn about creating interesting costumes, following directions using a map and much more, all while having fun!

Go from saying “hello” to “ahoy” by following the pirate transformation steps below.

1 . Dress the part. When you think of a pirate, the first thing that comes to mind is how they look – their shiny hooks, bushy beards and tattered clothes. Craft your own pirate costume using materials like black face paint, aluminum foil and old t-shirts. Easily create an eye patch with black construction paper and yarn.

3. Learn the lingo. Before hoisting the sails, you and your child should learn a few key pirate vocabulary words. Replace what you say on your journey with these common pirate phrases below.

4. Create a map of your journey. Even pirate crews need directions! Create your own by helping your child draw the layout of the living room, back yard or a park.

Experiment with paper and crayons or felt and glue to make your map.

Your pirate journey is also a great opportunity to teach older children how to use a compass or ruler.

Teens Tied to Tech

Getting kids to disengage from screens and be in the moment

S

chool is in full swing and your teens are busier than ever. Between team practices, club meetings and homework, you’re lucky to get a word in edgewise with them. When you do finally come together in the same place at the same time and catch up, you find yourself competing with the constant chirp of their incoming texts, the latest YouTube video shared by a friend and the social media site that must be updated. Another chance for real connection among the people you care about most has been derailed.

Absorbed in technology “Children are able to find entertainment and leisure increasingly away from the family unit,” explains pediatric psychologist James Schroeder, Ph.D., HSPP. “There are always distractions in our lives, but [technology] has provided increased distractions away from engaging with each other.”

Mobile devices, streaming video, social media…the opportunities to plug in are ever-present and the time teens spend being connected to some form of technology is astounding. The Kaiser Family Foundation reports that young people devote more than seven hours a day to media use.

“We’re the first generation of parents who had to deal with this problem and there’s no precedent,” says Angela Hursh, mother of two. Lily, 15, has a smartphone and loves watching design and makeup tutorials online. Ella, 11, has an iPad and enjoys videos on horseback riding and veterinary care. Like many parents, Hursh often worries about the amount of time her daughters spend on their devices. This is a legitimate concern, as The American Academy of Pediatrics links excessive media exposure to behavioral problems, trouble in school, obesity and lack of sleep.

Schroeder studies and writes extensively on the impact that technology has on children, and says the neurological effect is similar to addiction. In his paper A New Vision of Technology and Our Youth he writes, “We seek to teach our kids how to use technology as rewards and aids, not necessities and crutches. It is here that mobile devices can become a deterrent to this aspiration, as their ‘constant companionship’ leads our youth to repeatedly text for reassurance, surf for pleasure or game for engagement.”

Exchange tech experiences for similar “real” experiences

With technology having such a tight hold on our kids’ attention, how can we encourage them to step away from their screens and see the advantages of “living in the moment”? Here are few suggestions for achieving a better balance.

“If you want to reduce media consumption you have to replace it with something meaningful and rewarding,” Schroeder says. For example, if your son is a gamer, rather than having a weekend glued to XBox, get a ping pong or card game tournament going. “Actively work to create family experiences not reliant on technology,” says Schroeder.

Understand the time and place for tech Begin by setting clear limits on screen time and letting your kids know when it’s appropriate to use their device and when it’s not. Schroeder suggests establishing “time off” periods from technology, including dinner and family outings. Hursh says the policy in her family is “no screen time until homework is done.”

Challenge your family to spend a couple of days without their devices. Ask for their suggestions on activities that interest them. At the end of the weekend, talk with your kids about what they may have learned about their dependence on technology and what kind of effect spending their time in other ways had on them.

Realize the personal toll technology takes Talk to kids about how excessive screen time makes them feel – relaxed or frazzled? Energized or depleted?

Contrast this with how getting outside, being physically active or having a great conversation with a friend makes them feel. Also discuss how being in the presence of someone distracted by their device affects their relationship with that person.

What’s the best way to get your kids to change their technology-dependency? Show them how it’s done. Resist the urge you have to constantly answer your phone, check social media sites and isolate yourself in the myriad ways that technology now allows all of us to do. Let your children see how you value face-to-face relationships and in-person experiences over digital ones and they will begin to see the benefits of managing their tie to technology too.

Research to Real World: Risky Behavior

What parents can do to help kids make better choices Tonya Bergeson-Dana, PhD

I was a responsible teenager.

Mostly. I earned good grades, participated in extra-curricular activities and had a part-time job.

Still, like any other teenager, I made some less-than-stellar choices that the grown-ups in my life might have labeled “risky behavior,” like driving too fast or hanging out with kids I hardly knew. When I think about all the stressors my parents had to deal with during my teenage years, I start to panic about my eight-yearold son becoming a teenager. (I know it is still years away, but the first eight years have gone by in the blink of an eye and I have a feeling the next eight will too!)

Here’s the deal. Teenagers, on their own, are actually fairly reasonable.

Research out of Temple University has shown that teens behave like adults in a driving game in which the subject comes to an intersection when the light turns yellow. Both groups apply the brakes. However, when teens are around other teens, they take chances. In the driving game, they throw caution to the wind and run right through that yellow light. Brain scans reveal that the frontal cortex, essentially the command center of the brain that allows us to control our behavior and emotions, hasn’t fully developed yet in tweens and teens, leaving them vulnerable to the demands of the limbic system, which seeks out the kind of high you’d get from alcohol, sex or the approval of your teenage peers.

Parents can’t do much about hurrying along the development of the frontal cortex. However, another recent study suggests that there are ways we can help our children develop defenses against problem behaviors that might result from cloudy judgment and poor impulse control.

Researchers from Brigham Young University and the University of Missouri took a look at teens’ social behaviors for three years starting around age 13. Kids who demonstrated positive social behaviors (doing small favors, cheering up people) towards strangers showed fewer problem behaviors, such as aggression and delinquency, two years later.

This could be partly because helping strangers is linked with empathy, sympathy, perspectivetaking and even moral reasoning.

These researchers also found teens with positive social behaviors during the first year of the study led to higher scores of maternal warmth (e.g., responding with comfort and understanding when children are upset or spending loving moments with children) during family interactions, which then led to fewer problem behaviors in the teens. On the other hand, teens with high anxiety early on had lower maternal warmth scores in the middle of the study, and more problem behaviors than the other teens at the end of the study.

What can parents do to help their tweens and teens survive these tumultuous times? One basic intervention is to engage them in altruistic activities, such as volunteering their time to charity and community events, donating their clothing and toys, and serving meals to people in need. Families can make this type of activity a regular habit in early childhood so tweens and teens aren’t surprised by their parents’ sudden interest in helping strangers. Engaging in these kinds of behaviors as a family can serve as a second intervention, which is for parents to provide a warm and supportive environment for their tweens and teens. Parents can also encourage conversation and ask their children open-ended questions. Kids need to know their parents are sensitive to their needs, are paying attention to them and actively love them. Participating in family activities and fully engaging in your children during these activities is a good place to start.

A breast lump is usually NOT cancer.

“Most breast lumps are benign.

Sometimes, when a woman feels a new breast lump, it is really just a thickened area of normal breast tissue. This is most common when the lump is tender, and comes and goes with her menstrual cycle,” says Dr. Erika Rager, MD, a breast surgeon with Franciscan Physician Network. “Breast lumps are also frequently caused by fluid-filled cysts in the breast tissue. These don’t require any additional treatment unless they are painful.”

Your physical activity level may impact your risk for breast cancer even more than if you smoke.

While a link between breast cancer and cigarette smoking has yet to be firmly established, body weight and activity level do seem to play a role in breast cancer risk. “Maintaining a healthy body weight with a BMI of 25 or less will lower your risk of developing breast cancer,” says Dr. Rager.

Mammograms can miss things – don’t ignore what your body is telling you.

Mammograms are able to detect very small areas of cancer that a manual breast exam may never feel. And while all women should follow the national breast screening guidelines regarding when to have mammograms, they should also listen to their bodies. If a woman finds a concerning area on her breast, she should not ignore it even if she has had a normal mammogram recently. Even technology has its limitations, and there is the possibility that something could have been missed.

Researchers have repeatedly found that children on the autism spectrum can benefit from interacting with animals, often having lower stress levels and developing better social skills as a result.

A study at Purdue University this year tracked physiological stress in both typically developing children and those with autism as they read silently, read aloud to peers, played with toys and then played with two guinea pigs. Stress levels were higher in the children with autism in every situation except for when they played with the guinea pigs, suggesting that animals may act as a kind of social buffer for those children.

“What we’re finding is that children with autism show increased social interaction when they have a positive source of interaction, such as an animal,” says Marguerite O’Haire, assistant professor of human-animal interaction at Purdue, who led the study. “That’s important because it’s often a concern that these children can be isolated and bullied by peers.”

In Canyon’s case, his mother, Jenny Rice, originally began bringing dogs home from the shelter where she volunteers, FACE Animal Clinic on Indianapolis’ near east side, to help her son overcome his anxiety of riding in the car. “He definitely had a preference for the bigger dogs. I also felt more comfortable with the stockier dogs since he doesn't always have the most gentle touch,” Jenny recalls. “These dogs were coming from a kennel environment, so Canyon's loud verbal [self-stimulatory behavior] didn't phase them.” On the days he visited with the dogs, Canyon’s therapist reported that Canyon showed few or no aggressive behaviors.

The family began raising money to find a rescue dog to train as an emotional support animal for Canyon, and Tessie, a border collie-pit bull mix who had visited from FACE, was the perfect fit.

In August, she graduated from three weeks of full-time training at Ultimate Canine in Westfield.

“Canyon couldn't be happier. When he wakes up in the morning, he instantly smiles when he sees her,” Jenny says. “They both love water, and Canyon likes to splash her. It may seem insignificant, but he doesn’t engage other people like that.”

Adding a puppy to the family hasn’t been without its challenges. For Jenny, it’s meant more work and earlier mornings, but she says she’d do it again without hesitation. “Even with all the added stress for me, watching the two of them together makes it totally worth it. Canyon still gets upset, but Tessie brings a lot more laughter and happiness to his life. She makes him happier than anyone ever has.”

For families that aren’t quite ready for the added responsibility of adopting a pet, O’Haire suggests seeking out ways to interact with animals in the community, such as volunteering at a local shelter, going to the zoo or simply visiting a friend with a pet. “It’s not a one-sizefits-all solution,” she says. “Not every child with autism will respond to animals in such a positive way, but for those who do, it can be a powerful phenomenon.”

Making Halloween a fun and safe night for everyone Maggie Loiselle

Amassing a collection of candy on Halloween night is a custom kids look forward to all year, but for parents of children with food allergies, trick-ortreating can be a truly scary proposition.

Common allergens such as wheat, milk, egg and soy are found in a wide range of popular candy, and even more sweets are manufactured in plants that process peanuts and tree nuts.

One accidental bite could be enough to cause a serious allergic reaction for some young ghouls and goblins.

“As parents, you want to carry on the traditions you had growing up. You want your kids to experience trick-or-treating,” says Lauren Kossack, an Indianapolis mom and author of the blog EpiFamily.com, whose sons Christian, 6, and Atticus, 5, both have food allergies.

Kossack encourages fellow food allergy families to use Halloween as a teaching opportunity, involving children in reading labels and sorting safe and unsafe treats. “They’re always kind of shocked when they have 50 pieces of candy and they end up with 10. It’s eye-opening,” she says. “It’s about creating a healthy fear of the allergy but not projecting your anxiety onto the experience.”

Kids with food allergies can still be part of the night’s spooky fun. Here are some tips for keeping them safe.

No eating on the road. Dark conditions and distractions increase the risk of eating something dangerous by mistake. Pack safe snacks instead if kids need something to eat while they’re out.

Chat up the neighbors. Help educate nearby families about safe candy and food-free alternatives for Halloween. You can even buy trinkets in advance for neighbors to give your child if necessary.

Pick costumes carefully. For kids with contact-sensitive allergies, pick a costume that includes gloves and change into pajamas as soon as they arrive home.

Sort and read. Even if it’s a candy your child usually eats, double check the label for allergy warnings. Snack-size and standard-size versions of the same candy are often manufactured at separate plants, leading to different allergy warnings. If a wrapper is open or doesn’t have a label, it should be put in the pile of unsafe treats.

Switch and swap. There are lots of fun and creative ways to swap out unsafe candy.

Set up a candy trade-in program, leave it for the “Switch Witch” to pick up in exchange for safe treats or accept candy as payment for a larger toy.

“I stock up on safe treats, and [my daughter] can exchange any peanut candy she gets for something from the stash,” says Lebanon mom Amy Johnson, whose daughter, Ella, 10, is allergic to nuts. “I do this instead of simply taking the candy away because we have a non-allergic child also, and we want to keep it fair.”

Another solution is to give the candy to someone special who would really enjoy it. “It’s fun for the kids to put all the treats with nuts in a bag for their grandpa,” says Fishers mom Cathi White, whose daughter Sara, 15, and son Alex, 10, both have nut allergies.

Lead by example. Pass out non-food treats at your house.

Bought in bulk, items like glow sticks, stickers or pencils can cost the same or less than candy and offer all kids a different trick-or- treat prize.

Lions, tigers and bears, oh my! Halloween can be a fun time and a great memory for a child with autism with a little bit of practice and preparation.

Here are some tips to make your Halloween a fun event for all.

1. Choose a comfortable costume. Having a simple costume that is appropriately sized can make your child more comfortable for the entire night.

2. Practice makes perfect. Some children with autism need extra practice to prepare for Halloween. Consider a dress rehearsal to practice

wearing costumes and walking the route you plan to take for trick-or-treating. This can help children know what to expect before the big event. This can also help children practice the routine of knocking on neighbors’ doors, talking with others and transitioning to the next home.

3. Consider an alternative Halloween event. Even with practice, some children may not be ready for traditional trick-or-treating. Consider allowing your child to dress up, stay home with you and hand out candy to trick-or-treaters. This will allow your child to take part in social interaction in a familiar place, while also allowing for sensory breaks to ease into the night as needed. College Scholarships Helping your teen find avail able funds Michelle Shirk

If you have a collegebound teen, you’re probably already thinking about ways to make your child’s education more affordable. You know there’s scholarship money out there, but how do you find it? Maximize your family’s chances of scholarship success with these expert tips.

Setting the stage “The work to become eligible for many scholarships needs to begin when you enter the ninth grade,” says Deanna Ziegler, High School Counselor at Arsenal Technical High School. Naturally, good grades should be a high priority. Beth Barnette Knight, Director of the IUPUI Office of Student Scholarships, recommends students focus on academics while seeking out “above and beyond” options like advanced placement classes and research opportunities.

Ziegler also encourages students to participate in school activities like clubs, athletics or fine arts programs. Volunteering in the community is another great way to get involved and gain valuable experiences. Whichever “extras” your child chooses, try to secure documentation of his or her

participation. For example, a corporation may be willing to write a letter confirming your child’s experience with them, which can be included with scholarship applications later on. Ziegler suggests starting a file and keeping this type of paperwork in a safe place.

“Beginning to educate yourself about scholarship opportunities during [your child’s] sophomore year of high school is ideal,” adds Barnette Knight. At minimum, parents should start the process by junior year, when students will be taking admission tests and seriously considering their college choices.

Next, reduce senior year stress by planning ahead. Even before a student is eligible to apply, parents can search for and think about potential scholarships, says Ziegler.

Your scholarship road map “There are a lot of scholarships out there,” says Ziegler, which is good news for families starting to learn about the process.

Colleges themselves offer a variety of different scholarships to prospective students. These can include scholarships designated for first generation attendees, valedictorians and honors students, or students with a particular career focus.

Local businesses and organizations provide another potential funding source. Students may be able to receive scholarships from employers, churches and civic groups, says Barnette Knight. Some high schools even offer scholarships. In addition, the State of Indiana awards funds to various categories of learners. “Never pay to apply for scholarships,” says Barnette Knight. “Most legitimate scholarship programs have a free application process.”

Tips for the perfect pitch Once you find a great scholarship opportunity, help your child stand out from the crowd of applicants. In cases where an essay is required, make sure the final product is appealing and uses correct grammar, says Ziegler. She notes that teachers and counselors are willing to review scholarship essays for their students.

If the application process involves an interview, your child should “be sure to dress professionally and be prepared,” says Barnette Knight. She suggests the student write a script discussing his or her educational goals and how the scholarship will help achieve them, as well as the unique personal qualities he or she has to offer.

Don’t let a technical glitch eliminate your child from consideration. Follow up on applications sent by fax or at the last minute, urges Barnette Knight. “Sometimes, just taking this extra step will demonstrate your seriousness with the details.” For scholarships that require a showing of financial need, FAFSA paperwork must be submitted by March 1st.

Applicants should also keep in close contact with those writing letters of recommendation to answer questions and ensure the letters are timely submitted.

Ask the Teacher Bullying programs, math facts, grammar problems Deb Krupowicz

Q:

I have a hard time imagining that bullying is any worse than it ever was. Some kids are just mean. Why is so much school time being devoted to this topic?

A:

Bullying has been on the landscape of every childhood; you are right that there have always been mean kids who make life difficult for others. However, technology and social media have brought about an increase in the number of incidents of bullying and have added another mechanism by which bullying occurs. The speed with which vicious posts spread far surpasses anything we have ever known. In no time, a student can become a victim of a large number of taunts and jabs.

Because of the pervasive and very public nature of bullying now possible through technology, public health agencies, school counselors and child psychologists have felt compelled to develop multi-faceted programs to address this issue. Students learn how to avoid becoming victims by building self-confidence and developing specific strategies to use in response to bullies. Classmates learn to recognize when behaviors escalate from teasing to bullying and are given ideas on how to stand up for others. Kids also come to understand their responsibility in reporting bullying to trusted adults for the protection of others.

Social media emboldens kids who would likely never have surfaced as “bullies” a generation ago.

Kids consider their negative posts as harmless because they are not physically hurting anyone.

They simply do not understand that the pain inflicted on others in this way can result in much more damage than a playground fight. Parents should monitor their child’s email and social media accounts to make sure their child is not being bullied and also, to ensure that their child’s actions could not be perceived as inflicting harm on others.

Q:

When I attended Parent Night for my third grade son, I was surprised when the teacher said that she would not be emphasizing math facts during third grade. She said it was not a priority of the math program they use.

Why would this not be considered important?

A:

Some math programs place a heavier emphasis on mathematical concepts and abstract thinking than on the skill and drill that has been typically emphasized in math instruction. There is

a great deal of research that indicates that development of algebraic reasoning lays a stronger foundation for the indepth math that is taught later.

Common sense still indicates that the better a child masters basic facts in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, the more adept he will be when computation becomes more complex. Adding, subtracting and multiplying multi-digit numbers will be done more successfully when a child knows basic math facts. Applying those three mastered skills to solving long division problems will minimize the frustrations of learning that very challenging concept.

You can provide the opportunity for math fact mastery using flashcards or by using a free website for practice and games such as www.factmonster. com/math/flashcards.html or www.playkidsgames.com/ games/mathfact/mathFact. htm. Five to ten minutes of practice several times a week will provide a great foundation for confident math computation.

Q:

We have been in three different schools due to job transfers over the last eight years. Our seventh grader has coped with the moves well and has been successful in school. However, she has not gotten a good grasp of grammar. I do not know this subject well enough to help her, and I am seeing that she is having a tough time in her Spanish class because of it.

What can I do to help her?

A:

The importance of direct instruction in grammar is highly debated. However, a student doesn’t have to spend much time in a challenging writing class or as a new foreign language learner to understand that these courses would be much easier with a better understanding of the building blocks of English.

Many parents lack confidence in providing grammar instruction, largely because they have been away from it for so long.

An easy way to help reinforce the basics of grammar is to find an Internet site that provides explanations and examples as well as practice. The format of these websites is typically quite engaging. Before your daughter starts on the website, try the exercises yourself so that you can see how the site handles incorrect responses. An explanation is very helpful! If you prefer something other than screen-time, go to an education resources store and ask for a workbook recommendation.

Look for a book that has easy-tounderstand explanations as well as examples, opportunities to practice what was explained and a complete answer key. Finally, working with a tutor may be necessary until your child learns the basic parts of speech and usage skills. The investment will pay off not only in a better foreign language experience, but also in a better understanding of the essential elements of writing.

Footnotes: Thoughts from the margins of a mom’s life The Mommy Buffer Kelly Blewett

After my son’s birthday, he and I sat down to write thank you notes. We had the presents in front of us on the dining room table next to a stack of cards and stickers. William had a lot to say and his pencil couldn’t keep up. Writing felt time intensive, and fitting all the words he wanted to use on the small space of a notecard seemed impossible. So I was handling the writing. My son was talking in a fast flow of words I was supposed to take down directly, and then he’d sign the note at the bottom and decorate with a few stickers. The trouble was, some of the words he was using were not exactly appropriate thank-you card material.

I wrote, “Thank you for the trainset, I love it.”

“Tell her thank you for the trainset and I love it, but that the top piece is really hard to get in place and I hate that.”

Even little tasks like thank you cards arrive with unstated rules. Or, to put it another way, writing a thank you card isn’t just about learning how to write, it’s also about learning what to say. Fortunately, due to my

Next he dictated, “Tell him the lunchbox is great, but that I tried popcorn inside and I hated it.”

I wrote, “The lunchbox is great.”

I was my son’s silent censor that day. I felt particularly sneaky altering his writing and knowing he couldn’t read it and catch me. He signed his name proudly at the bottom of each note. Eventually I tried to talk about it. “Sweetie, you don’t put the bad stuff in a thank you note, just the good stuff.” Though I’m sure this was the right thing to say, I’m not sure he really heard me.

sneaky moves, all the words we put there were worth sharing. We talked about the rules together, and I’m sure we’ll talk about them again.

All of this made me think about how we are buffers for our children. We cushion, protect and absorb little problems, giving kids time to think about the unstated rules at home before they misstep out in the world. As I noodled on the metaphor, I realized how many types of buffers there are. In rail transport, for instance, there are two kinds of buffers: a buffer to cushion the impact between two vehicles, and a buffer stop, which enables the vehicles to say on the tracks. Though I’m no train conductor or engineer, I too want to help my child in these ways – to protect him from unintended collisions and to keep him focused on how to best move in the world.

Reality: If you even have the energy to attempt running once you have kids, start by knowing that running with a child in a jogging stroller is no easy task.

Even the smallest incline you've run up hundreds of times before, now feels like a miniature Mount Everest. As you run, your child will likely toss items out of the stroller while on route. This usually occurs when you finally have a decent pace going and forces you to not only stop, but turn around to retrieve a prized stuffed animal, lovey, container of 1,000 goldfish crackers or whatever the item may be.

In between things being launched from the stroller, your child is also likely to spend the entire time talking. Not talking to themselves either, but talking to you, asking questions you MUST answer in order to make them stop.

Even as you struggle with every breath, you're still forced to reply to practical questions like "Why are stop signs red?" and not so practical questions like "Do glitter fairies really exist?”

Almost as bad as the talking stroller passenger is the sleeping stroller passenger. You may be wondering, "Why is a sleeping child a bad thing?"

Think about it. Your child is sleeping while you completely exhaust yourself exercising. When you do finish your run and are ready for a break, your child will be fully refreshed and ready to play. Also, you may have botched nap time, so the chance of you napping or even showering later just diminished to almost nothing.

I don't want to be completely discouraging about running with a jogging stroller, just be prepared for things to be difficult, especially at first as you try to develop a routine. If nothing else, running with a jogging stroller really makes you appreciate the days when you can exercise alone in sweet, sweet silence.
