What’s not to like about April? Spring flowers, spring sunshine…spring break!

By the time April rolls around, we know that even if a cool rainy day pops up, at least we’re still headed in the right direction of enjoying warmer days outside again with our families.

April also signifies the arrival of an important campaign: Autism Awareness Month. Although your family may not be personally affected by autism, it’s likely you know someone who is.

Identifying a potential problem early on is so important with this disorder, which is why we asked local experts for their input when writing our article Detecting Early Signs of Autism. If you recognize any red flags in your child, please don’t hesitate to follow up with your pediatrician for an evaluation.

Accessibility at The Children’s Museum Ensuring that everyone has a great visit As a parent, you want to take your children to places that are fun and will make them happy but also be beneficial to their emotional and educational growth. Many museums and attractions are actively working to make visits more accommodating to those who have special needs. The best way to tell if a particular museum will be ready for you is to pre-plan the trip and do some research online.

The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis would like to help prepare your family ahead of time for some of the sights and sounds they will experience. For example, if you have a child with ASD or sensory issues, you have no doubt learned that he or she often benefits from knowing what to expect when they are facing a new and unknown experience such as visiting a museum.

Prior to your visit, you may want to read about sensory stories (childrensmuseum.org/visit/ accessibility/sensory-stories) with your child. These stories will help prepare you and your child for some of the sights and sounds you will encounter in the museum and let you determine any areas that may be over-stimulating or anxiety-producing.

the book with you and using it as a “visual agenda” for your visit may help your child with transitioning from one area of the museum to the next.

Feel free to download a sensory map or pick one up when you arrive. These maps include symbols to help guide you through your visit. The symbols indicate if a particular area is loud, quiet or bright. Designated quiet areas may be found on each floor of the museum. Fidget toy kits and noisereducing headphones are also available to check out from the Concierge Desk.

The Children’s Museum also works hard to provide barrier-free access for visitors in wheelchairs. Wheelchairs are available for free in the coat check area on a first-come, first-served basis.

There are only a handful of areas in the 500,000 square foot building that are less accessible due to the historic nature or natural habitat of certain artifacts, but the museum strives hard to ensure that visitors can experience a wide range of offerings that allow everyone to participate.

Lilly Theater productions include at least one ASL performance during the run of each show and assisted listening devices are available on a first-come, first-served basis. American Sign Language (ASL) Performances and ASL interpreters are also provided for select Lilly Theater performances.

A complimentary admission ticket to The Children’s Museum can be issued to a licensed care provider for visitors requiring medical assistance to visit. To receive a ticket, the care provider must provide an employee badge from a licensed facility and a matching photo ID.

Another convenience some folks appreciate is that families are allowed to bring their own lunches and snacks into the museum to eat in designated areas.

The Food Court offers a number of allergy-friendly menu options. Please keep in mind that most museums do not allow food in various exhibits or galleries out of respect for visitors with severe food allergies and to protect artifacts.

It’s Time for Lemonade Day! Those of us over 30 remember having a lemonade stand as a kid. It was a rite of passage.

Nowadays, in many neighborhoods, you would be hard-pressed to find kids out on the sidewalk, waving down potential customers from their lemonade stands. Lemonade Day is changing that and bringing lemonade stands back, along with a new way of thinking about them: they really are a kid’s first entrepreneurial venture. And an important experiential learning opportunity.

Now in its seventh year, Lemonade Day Greater Indianapolis is inspiring the next generation of Hoosier entrepreneurs. Simply put, Lemonade Day is about providing kids of all ages the opportunity to EXPERIENCE entrepreneurship by planning, starting, owning, and operating their own business: a lemonade stand! Online registration opened March 1st. When kids register, they get access to our fun, game-like digital curriculum called Lemonopolis. They earn points as they work through interactive lessons about starting a lemonade business and preparing for Lemonade Day, which is

Saturday, May 21st. On that day, kids all over the Greater Indy area set up lemonade stands, sell lemonade and get a taste of entrepreneurship! They keep the money (it’s their business after all!) and we encourage them to spend, save and share their profits.

Over the last six years, these budding entrepreneurs collectively have donated an extraordinary amount of money to charities of their choosing, many of them local.

Lemonade Day is just around the corner. You can expect to see hundreds, even thousands, of kids setting up shop and selling lemonade that day. There is nothing more local – more American even – than a kid at a lemonade stand, eager to earn their first dollar. Unlike the kids of prior generations though, who sort of “hoped for the best” with their lemonade sales, these lemonade stand owners will be armed with a business plan, maybe even a logo and a Square Reader. A new rite of passage.

Vulvodynia: The pain no one wants to talk about One in ten women (perhaps you, even?) at some point experiences something that’s incredibly hard to talk about: pain or discomfort “down there.”

If you’ve ever experienced pain with intimacy or generalized vulvar pain, you’ve likely felt uneasy talking about it with anyone – your partner, closest girlfriends and even your medical provider. It’s awkward, right?

The reality is that more women deal with vulvar pain than you realize.

Causes include infection, inflammation and neurological problems, but sometimes there’s no identifiable cause. This is called “vulvodynia,” often described as a burning pain around the opening of the vagina and can extend to other areas of the vulva.

According to the National Vulvodynia Association (NVA), the location, constancy and severity of the pain vary greatly among sufferers. For some women, the pain occurs only during sexual activity. For others, it can be constant, making tampon use or mundane activities like sitting or wearing jeans painful or impossible.

“In many cases,” the NVA writes on its website, “the pain is so severe and unremitting that it forces women to resign from career positions, abstain completely from sexual relations, and limit many physical activities, often destroying a woman’s self image.”

The NVA goes on to report a study in which: • 75 percent of women with vulvodynia feel “out of control”

• 60 percent report that it

compromises their ability to enjoy life • 60 percent cannot have sexual intercourse because of the pain

Given the high potential for life disruptions, women’s silence over this issue costs them far more than the brief awkwardness they might feel bringing up the subject with their health provider. “If a woman brings up this type of pelvic issue to a health provider and doesn’t feel like she’s getting the answers she needs, she should seek further attention,” says Cara Berg Raunick, a women’s health nurse practitioner specializing in pelvic health at the St. Vincent Carmel Women’s Center. “Some women think

pain is just a normal part of sex for them or are so embarrassed that they think they just have to live with it. You don’t. We can take steps to make it better.”

Because each woman is different and the cause of vulvar pain is unknown, finding the right treatment isn’t always straightforward. There is no one best treatment for all women, and sometimes the problem can’t be erased completely.

The bottom line? If you’re in pain, tell your health provider. “These are personal issues, and we get that,” says Raunick. “But it’s what we hear and address every single day. There is help for you.”

Hectic schedules, work drama, restless sleep, multiple family obligations…there’s no shortage of factors to make you exhausted. (The kind of fatigue that Starbucks just can’t fix.) Is being overly tired an issue for you more days than not?

According to physicians Dr. Jamie Boyce, an OB/GYN at Franciscan St. Francis Health, and Dr. Tronya Hawkins, an OB/ GYN at St. Vincent Medical Group, those heavy eyelids could mean it’s either time for a serious look at your daily routine, or a trip to your doctor for a check-up.

Tire d? Conside r health habits first Before scheduling an appointment with your physician, grab a notebook and spend at least a week tracking your sleep, diet and mood fluctuations. “I encourage women to keep a journal of these factors to help examine how they affect how they feel,” says Dr. Boyce.

• Sleep: How many hours of sleep are you getting a night, and what is the quality of your sleep?

• Nutrition: Do you consistently eat breakfast? What does your diet look like? Do you need caffeine to feel energized?

• Bedtime routine: How much time do you spend watching TV or using smartphones, tablets or the computer before bed?

• Mood: Are you frequently stressed out, anxious or depressed?

• Duration: How long has your fatigue been a problem?

With a clearer picture of your health habits, ask yourself which behaviors may be contributing to your fatigue and what changes you can make. Dr. Boyce and Dr. Hawkins offer these suggestions:

• Depression: While being depressed typically involves feelings of sadness or hopelessness, feeling lethargic is a common symptom as well.

• Make your bedroom a relaxing place. Try lighting a soothing candle, keeping the temperature cool and kicking out the TV.

• Heart or lung disease: Fatigue and exhaustion often occur when the heart and lungs are struggling to oxygenate the blood properly.

• Unwind with books or magazines at bedtime rather than bright screens (such as tablets, laptops or smartphones.)

• Ensure you’re getting at least 7-8 hours of uninterrupted sleep every night.

• Eat a protein-rich breakfast in the morning, and consider a multivitamin.

• Drink plenty of water throughout the day, and balance your diet by limiting sugary foods and stocking up on fruits and vegetables.

• Don’t forget to de-stress. Whether it’s daily exercise, meditation, deep breathing exercises or a gratitude journal, find an activity that helps bring balance to your emotional life.

Still tire d? Time for a c hec k- up You’ve balanced your diet, burned through all your lavender-scented candles and replaced your bedtime Facebook scrolling habit for eight solid hours of sleep. What do you do if you still feel drained?

Dr. Boyce and Dr. Hawkins suggest a visit to your doctor to find out if your fatigue is a sign that one of these underlying medical conditions might be at play: • Thyroid conditions: 1 in 8 women suffer from a thyroid condition, which can result in fatigue, depression, intolerance to cold or heat, or unexplained weight gain or loss. A blood test can help determine if your thyroid gland is on the fritz.

• Anemia: Feeling tired is the most common symptom of anemia, a condition in which the body lacks enough healthy blood cells or hemoglobin. If you have heavy menstrual cycles this may affect you.

• Medications: Certain medications can sometimes contribute to fatigue. Your doctor can help you determine if this is the case and how your prescriptions may be adjusted.

• Sleep disorders: Conditions like sleep apnea (which occurs when a person stops breathing intermittently during sleep) can contribute to fatigue and be diagnosed with a sleep study.

The bottom line: if you are continually tired, don’t ignore it. “Listen to your body,” says Dr. Hawkins. Being a parent is by definition a tiring and demanding job, but discounting your feelings of fatigue isn’t wise for you – or your family. If tweaking your daily routine doesn’t have an impact, don’t hesitate to schedule an appointment with your doctor to find out what you need to do feel rested, energized and ready to take on another busy day.

Research to Real World Do Children With Hearing Loss Enjoy Music?

easily through her body. She follows that up with nuanced performances on any of the hundreds of percussion instruments she has mastered.

Musical sounds are essentially sound waves of air particles traveling from the sound source to the listener. We typically think of sound waves stimulating the eardrum and traveling through the inner ear to create our perception of sound, but they can also be felt vibrotactically – through vibrations that are interpreted as meaningful sound. Glennie, who had been musical since childhood, mastered this skill.

I just received an email advertising the Hear Indiana Talk Walk Run, an organization that supports families and children with hearing loss, taking place later this month, which got me thinking about our general understanding of hearing loss. I have been a musician all my life, and studied how babies perceive music in graduate school, but still knew very little about hearing and hearing loss when I started a fellowship at Riley Hospital right out of grad school. My colleagues at Riley recruited me because I knew how to study auditory perception in babies.

I learned right away that there are varying degrees of hearing loss.

People may have a mild hearing loss (e.g., cannot hear birds chirping on the windowsill) and still function 20 INDYSCHILD.COM // APRIL 2016

pretty well in everyday life. Hearing loss moves from mild to moderate, severe and finally profound levels.

People with profound hearing loss cannot hear sounds quieter than a motorcycle engine revving, including all the sounds needed to hear spoken language.

Another thing I learned is that despite having a hearing loss, even at profound levels, both children and adults still enjoy music. You may have heard Evelyn Glennie perform with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra this season. She’s a professional percussionist who has had a profound hearing loss since the age of 12. Her signature performance involves walking onstage with bare feet so she can “hear” the musical vibrations more

Many parents of children who have profound hearing loss are now choosing cochlear implantation as a tool for providing access to spoken communication and music. Cochlear implants are auditory prostheses that take sound waves and translate them into electronic signals that directly stimulate the auditory system. The resulting “sounds” have similar timing and rhythm as the sounds we hear, but the pitch or melody is quite different.

Adults who have received cochlear implants after hearing loss later in life have described the signal as scratchy or robotic, and often report that music doesn’t sound very good anymore.

Children who use cochlear implants also do not hear musical pitch as well as children with typical hearing.

Despite this, they enjoy taking music lessons, playing in the school band, and going to concerts with their friends.

In fact, recent studies show that children and adults with cochlear implants can hear differences between musical notes such as the distance between a white note and a black note on a piano keyboard which is fundamental to understanding melody! In fact, some kids, particularly those who received cochlear implants at a very young age and are actively involved in musical experiences, accurately perceive and produce songs, a skill long thought impossible for children with profound hearing loss.

Understanding how people “hear” music with profound hearing loss helps us understand so many things about music. One of the most important things is that music is a strong source of social and emotional bonding regardless of the ability to hear.

detecting early signs of Autism

Parenthood has always come with plent y of questions : Is my child growing normally? Is he ge t ting enough sleep ? Is she mee ting her nutritional needs ?

But today ’s moms and dads may also be asking a question pre vious gener ations did not: Could my child have autism ?

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one in every 68 children is diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD.) A government survey in 2015 puts the rate even higher at 1 in 45 children.

The developmental disorder is being detected earlier and earlier, sometimes even before babies have their first birthday, thanks to more public awareness and education programs. Spotting autism is far from an exact science however. Early warning signs can be tricky to discern from typical phases of childhood development, and they vary in severity from child to child.

“I've been in the field for 20 years, and I'm still trying to identify early red flags,” says Dr. Edward Parker, Clinical Director for Unlocking the Spectrum, which provides autism therapy across Indiana. “Before the age of 2, it can be a challenge to pick up on, compared to when [a child is] 4 or 5 years old. But by then, you’ve missed two or three years of early intervention services.”

While some behaviors are commonly associated with kids on the spectrum – such as hand flapping or tiptoe walking – experts also encourage parents to observe how their child learns, communicates and interacts with others, which are key areas in which children with autism often struggle.

Here are some red flags that may warrant a professional evaluation:

D i f f i c u lt y c om m u n i c at i n g While we typically equate communication with talking, deficits in this area can be spotted well before a child begins to speak. Pointing, babbling, smiling and making eye contact are all forms of subtle, nonverbal communication between child and caregiver, and a lack of these skills can be an early indicator of a problem.

“Individuals with ASD show challenges with such responses and alternatively appear to be aloof,

non-communicative and disinterested, as well as potentially even confused or distressed within the social context around them,” says Naomi B. Swiezy, Program Director at the Christian Sarkine Autism Treatment Center and Director of HANDS in Autism in Indianapolis.

Because of their intense focus and ambivalence to social interactions, children with autism don’t learn through observation and imitation the way most children do.

Once speech begins, a typically developing child should have several words in his or her vocabulary by 18 months, and will likely use multipleword phrases like “I go now” or “my ball” by the age of 2.

For children on the autism spectrum though, this is when a language deficit can begin to show. They are more likely to use more grunts and sounds and may just have words for “no” or “mama.” Parents may find that the child only communicates when he or she needs something. For example, a typically developing child will bring a toy elephant to a parent and say, “Elephant!” But for a child with autism, they will often only interact if they need the parent to get more toy animals or if the parent tries to take the animal away. Any other interaction about the toy will be from the parent to the child, and it won’t be conversational in nature.

If a child does acquire new words but then suddenly stops using them, this can also be an important warning sign.

T ro u b le w i t h so c i a l c u e s Another area of major difference between typically developing children and those with autism is the need for and interpretation of social cues.

Imagine a child, between 18 months and 2 years old, waiting with his mother to see the pediatrician. When

the doctor comes in, a typically developing child will look at the parent and then at the doctor to observe how his mother is reacting.

Is mom smiling? Is she tense? The child will respond to the parent’s facial expressions, perhaps hugging her closer.

A child with autism may not recognize that the person is in the room at all, or recognize the person is present but be interested in them only to see if they have something he or she wants, like a toy.

“Parents should also see their children pointing out things that they like. We call this joint attention,” says Mary Rosswurm, Director of Little Star Center, which provides therapy for children with autism at centers across the state.

“So if a child sees a dog and is excited, we would expect a typically developing child to try to get his mom or dad’s attention and pointing out the dog. Even if the child is pre-vocal, he should be trying to share his pleasures with others.”

D i f f i c u lt y w i t h i m ag i n at i v e p l ay This lack of interest in social interactions can also impact how children with autism play.

Children on the spectrum may be more interested in examining the individual features of toys – wheels, buttons, sounds – rather than playing with them in a typical way.

“They may love a toy car, but instead of pushing the car around and pretending that it is driving, they may fixate on one specific part, like the wheels that spin or the doors that open and shut,” Rosswurm says.

Likewise, common imaginative social play among preschoolers, such as cooking and eating pretend food together, do not come naturally for children with autism. “Those are things that kids with autism simply do not do; not only 2-year-olds, there are 20-year-olds with autism who can’t engage in pretend play like that,” Parker says.

As any parent of a typically developing child knows, kids are watching and listening to us all the time. Even when we don’t realize it, they repeat back words, copy mannerisms and pick up details about the world around them. Parker gives the example of his own 2-year-old son, who will look in the refrigerator and say, “I want this” while pointing at the yogurt. He doesn’t have a label for the snack yet, but he knows he has experienced it and that he liked it.

For children with autism, this is more difficult, with skills like requesting something or imitating an action taking repeated academic training to learn. “Children with autism typically learn through cause and effect. It’s rare that they’re passively exposed to things and pick them up,” Parker says. “A typically developing child is learning just from being with others and listening, but a child with autism is not going to do that.”

R e p e t i t i v e b e h av i o r s Engaging in repetitive or ritualistic behaviors can be another sign to evaluate for autism. These behaviors can involve motor movements or vocal sounds, including actions like hand flapping, flicking fingers and tiptoe walking, or self-injurious behavior, such as repeatedly banging one’s head against the wall. Having a fascination with the repetitive movement of objects also qualifies.

“One parent told me that she was first concerned that her son might have autism when he was playing in a sandbox at a birthday party.

Something else happened and all of the other kids got up and went to check it out, but her son just stayed in the sandbox and watched sand pouring out of a cup over and over again for more than an hour,” Parker recalls.

A child with autism might also spend a significant amount of time seeking sensory input, such as wedging themselves into tight spaces, slamming into objects or people or spinning in circles. While typically developing children might exhibit these behaviors near bedtime when they’re wound up and overtired for example, children with autism will engage in these actions for hours if allowed.

Extreme sensitivit y to e n v i ro n m e n t Some children with autism may be extra sensitive to the sights, sounds and smells of their environment.

Others are averse to physical interaction of any kind. Parents of babies and toddlers with autism often report that their child only stops crying if he or she is put down and left alone, the opposite of what most young children would want.

Similarly, it may be a red flag if minor changes to the child’s environment, such as moving a piece of furniture, changing the light source or playing a game in a different sequence, cause major distress.

Experts stress that autism is a spectrum disorder, so no two children will present characteristics in exactly the same way. Still, these red flags are some of the basic ways in which autism can affect how a child communicates, interacts and learns new skills.

The earlier parents and doctors pick up on a potential problem, the sooner early intervention can begin closing the gaps. “There's very little difference between a 3-year-old child with autism who has not received intervention and a 30-year-old individual who has not received intervention. It just hurts more when a 30-year old hits you,” Parker says.

“Autism is a lifelong disability, and without intervention, individuals will be more and more affected by it.”

Swiezy agrees and encourages parents not to hesitate bringing any concerns to the attention of their child’s

pediatrician or another medical professional. Screenings are fast, simple and look for other developmental delays besides autism, too. “Very simply, if there is any red flag, the most conservative thing to do is to seek a referral for diagnosis,” says Swiezy. “If the evaluation results in failing to identify a disorder or problem, that is tremendous.

However, if a disorder is present, we want to catch it early.”

When you watch TV, do you see anyone like you?

For children with autism and their families, the chance of seeing a well-rounded character who is on the spectrum have long been slim, with small-screen portrayals typically focused more on stereotypes than reality.

“A lot of times, what we get is the most extreme portrait, like the kids who can’t talk, or it’s always about overcoming a disability, instead of the difference just being a part of them,” says Allison Harthcock, Associate Professor of Critical Communication and Media Studies at Butler University.

The industry has responded, albeit slowly, by incorporating more characters into story lines where their autism diagnosis is actually confirmed or is inferred.

“It’s about the quality of representation and the variety of the representation,” Harthcock stresses.

“It’s important that we show that it’s not all happy and smiley, and it’s important for parents to see representations of special needs parents, too.”

Here are a few TV shows that feature some of the better portrayals of individuals on the spectrum:

“Parenthood” This NBC drama, which ended last year, is heralded as one of the best researched and most realistic examples of the life of a special needs family. Over six seasons, the sprawling Braverman clan rallies around Max (played by Max Burkholder), a 9-year-old with the autism spectrum disorder Asperger’s syndrome, as he navigates life at school

Abed Nadir (played by Danny Pudi) is the emotional center of this offbeat comedy, which spent five seasons on NBC before moving to the now-defunct Yahoo! Screen for its sixth, and likely final, season last year. While Abed’s diagnosis was never confirmed, creator and showrunner Dan Harmon actually discovered that he has a form of Asperger’s while researching the disorder for Abed’s development. The well-rounded character sometimes has difficulty interacting with others, but he does form meaningful relationships, and his encyclopedic knowledge of pop culture make for some of the show’s best moments.

“The Middle” Recently renewed for an eighth season, this ABC sitcom set in Indiana follows the daily struggles and unintentional hilarity of the Heck family, whose youngest member, Brick (played by Atticus Shaffer), isn’t specified as having autism, but struggles with social interaction and often repeats words to himself in a whisper. Brick’s quirks and unusual interests are often used to highlight the universal ways in which parents and children don’t understand each other, which provides plenty of laughs.

On “Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood,” O the Owl has sensory sensitivities and often prefers to read about things rather than experience them. The shows handle the characters’ challenges as only PBS can, through education, compassion and the celebration of differences.

Here’s a park-by-park breakdown of various policies that can help you plan a successful trip.

Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari Santa Claus, Indiana This southern Indiana amusement and waterpark is known for embracing children with special needs and their families. Each May, the park offers discounted admission to 2,500 children with special needs for Play Day, a partnership with Easter Seals Rehabilitation Center in Evansville.

Families may be required to confirm in writing that the individual requesting the pass needs the accommodation. After receiving a pass, families simply go to the exit of any accessible attraction, hold up the pass and wait for the ride operator to tell them how to board the ride. Wait times may be assigned for five of the park’s major attractions.

Before sending your child to day camp, here are 10 last minute suggestions for a great experience.

Dress your child for comfort, safety and appropriate temperatures. Proper shoes are important too, particularly if he is playing outside. Opt for tennis shoes over strappy sandals and flip flops.

1. FILL ‘ER UP. Bring one bottle of refrigerated water and a second one that has been in the freezer. As the day wears on, the frozen water will melt and provide cool refreshment.

Spray bottles are a great idea too.

They keep the face and body cool in the hot sun.

2. IT’S A SCORCHER! Apply sunscreen to your child’s skin before he leaves home and pack the tube along for later reapplication. Avoid tanning lotion with little or no SPF, or

5. NAME IT AND CLAIM IT. Any item brought to camp should have your child’s name, address and phone number on it in case it gets left behind. It also avoids confusion if identical items are brought by two children.

6. TIME OUT FROM TECH TOYS. Leave valuable items such as handheld games or cell phones at home. Day camp programs are designed to provide an enriching

experience, and your child should be engaging in these activities rather than playing with electronics. If brought, these items may be confiscated and returned at day’s end in hopes your child gets the message.

7. PILLS, PAINS AND OTHER PROBLEMS. Camps have forms for parents to list their child’s medications. But if you take your camper off a medication for the summer, the camp needs to know that too, because it could cause an extreme change in behavior.

Allergies are another issue to make counselors aware of, be it insect or food related. Equally important is to share other concerns with camp staff, such as if your family is going through a divorce or has experienced a recent death, as this might affect your child’s interactions. Camps look out for the physical and emotional needs of a child, so the more information you provide, the better equipped they will be.

8. HELP IS ON THE WAY! Having an emergency contact person is vital.

Even more important is to inform the designated person that you have written her name down. Every year camps have situations where they call the emergency contact person and she was not told in advance that she had this responsibility.

9. BEEF YER’ BRAIN. Read the materials the camp gives you – policies, procedures and planned activities. If you know what to expect and what is expected of you, things will run much smoother. Most camps have a weekly schedule so parents know what the upcoming activities are. Talk with your child about the activities planned. If she cannot participate because of health reasons, make sure you (not your child) inform the camp.

10. GETTING TO KNOW YOU. Find out if there is an open house where you can meet the staff and see the facility prior to camp. If not, make other arrangements to introduce yourself to those who will be caring for your child. It is important for the camp directors and counselors to know you so they can keep you informed on how things are going for your child at camp.

Finally, encourage your child to enjoy the experience. Mark the first day of camp on the family calendar and do a countdown.

Help your child develop a checklist of items needed. And don’t forget to share your own camp stories. Remind your child to do his best, obey the rules, be respectful of others and have a great time!

Waiting for kindergarten, gifted programs, recognizing ADD

Q:

My son just turned five and is looking forward to starting kindergarten in the fall. Several friends have asked me whether I am sending him or holding him back a year. That thought never crossed my mind! I thought all students enrolled according to the cut-offs for birthdays that the school sent out. Should I reconsider?

A:

Some parents feel that their child will have a better chance of succeeding in school and keeping up with their peers if they wait to begin kindergarten.

Typically, schools offer registration in the spring prior to the kindergarten year. Preschool teachers usually conduct some basic assessments to test for readiness. They are trained to see red flags and recognize those children who may be better off waiting.

If your child’s preschool teacher recommends waiting to enroll, give this feedback some serious consideration. However, it is important to keep in mind that the months from April to August can bring a great deal of change in a five-year-old.

Think carefully about your child’s development. Consider how he gets along with kids his age in preschool, day care or in casual play. As you watch him in those situations, take note whether his behavior, interaction with others and his communication skills are similar to what other children

his age are doing. If he is functioning in a way that is comparable to his age-peers, he will likely have a positive experience in kindergarten.

Q:

I am very confused by the high ability/ gifted classes offered in our school corporation. If my daughter qualifies, she will be bussed to another school in our district.

Why can’t her own school meet her needs?

A:

Each school corporation determines how students qualify for high ability or gifted classes as well as what kinds of services they will provide. Some schools decide that the top 3-5% qualify; others use a test score to determine which students may participate. While some schools offer full classes for gifted students (referred to as self-contained), others have weekly pull-out programs for special topics of study, and others cluster small groups of similarly leveled students in a classroom where they will have varied amounts of more challenging curriculum.

By pooling all of the gifted students from your district into one classroom, the teachers can provide a genuinely enriched and accelerated environment that will meet the needs of this group of children consistently and effectively.

These programs are typically not stressful for students, but engage and excite them.

If your daughter qualifies, you will have to investigate the type of program that will be provided and then make the determination if the change of schools and the extra bus time is worth her involvement in the program.

Q:

My son hates school and is constantly being called out for not paying attention and acting like the class clown. His teacher says he doesn’t focus on the task at hand and interrupts her all the time. I have talked with him many times about this problem, but there has been no change.

What else can I do?

A:

Your son’s struggle to pay attention probably leads him to interrupt and distract others, which in turn gets a negative reaction from the teacher.

That negative reaction has probably made him feel disliked and not enjoy school. The key to making school a positive experience for him is to get to the bottom of what is causing his lack of focus. If only one teacher has observed this behavior, your son may be making a series of bad choices in her class alone. However, if other teachers have reported similar issues, something else may be at play.

Because you have already tried discussing this problem with your son to no avail, your next step may be to consult your pediatrician to determine if Attention Deficit Disorder is a factor here. Your doctor can put your son’s behavior into the context of normal childhood development and help determine through various rating scales if ADD is something your child is dealing with.

Parents often bristle at this diagnosis, or dismiss it all together, but ADD is very real. Acknowledging this issue removes the label of “ornery” or “class clown” from a child and instead turns the focus from lectures and consequences to development of strategies to improve likelihood of success. Medication may be required, but not necessarily.

If it is determined that your child does not have ADD, ask for a meeting with your child’s teacher and school counselor to develop a behavior plan.

Select one or two very specific behaviors at a time to target with an obvious way to quantify progress.

This approach can take a long time to achieve the across-the-board changes that you seek, but with a great deal of patience, you will see your son’s behavior move in the right direction.

Footnotes: Thoughts from the margins of a mom's life Matchy matchy

In the mornings, I have a pint-sized fashion plate on my hands. My daughter wants tights, a flouncy skirt, a sparkly shirt and a hair clip. Getting her to choose shoes can be excruciating, especially if we’re running late. I’ve been known to literally wring my hands with frustration when she’s choosing rain boots or sneakers. But eventually we get to the diva’s final accessory: a pair of sunglasses perched at the end of her nose. Her purse swings from her shoulder as she dances down the sidewalk toward the car.

In the evenings, though, the role abruptly shifts. It’s time to relax. Moments after crossing the threshold, my threenager’s tights unroll. Coat, skirt, sunglasses and boots are discarded. Feet patter up the stairs and a few minutes later she emerges in what I now think of as her night uniform: blue-andwhite striped cotton pants paired with a navy tee.

Sometimes, especially on the weekends, I find it difficult to persuade her to take them off at all. If she can’t find them, she goes fishing through the dirty clothes. When I close my eyes and picture my daughter, I automatically also imagine those pants.

But why? I wondered to myself recently. Why love for the striped pants?

Last Sunday morning I may have found my answer. I came downstairs early with kids. I made coffee, turned on a favorite episode of “Thomas,” and settled on the couch beside them. “Look Mom!” my daughter said. “We match!” I looked down at our laps. The night before I had grabbed a pair of pajamas from the back of the drawer, a thin cotton pair that I usually wear in the summer. And she was right: our pants were identical, down to the width of

the stripes and the texture of the fabric and the fit of the legs. We were unintentional twins. I smiled at her, the wheels in my mind turning.

Is she mimicking me? But how could that be, when the last time she saw the pants was practically a lifetime ago for her? Also, when I see the purse swinging from her shoulder, am I seeing a version of myself? What other fashion habits am I unintentionally passing down to this sharp-eyed child? All I know is this: I’ve got to go through my loungewear with a discerning eye and, more importantly, start emphasizing how flexible I am when it comes to footwear. Until then, I’ll start breaking out my summer pajamas a little bit more often, pair them with my favorite slippers, and remind myself that a mother’s influence is pretty powerful stuff.

A Dad Influence Puppy or Baby: Which is Harder?

Is it harder to raise a puppy than a baby?

Although I've raised three babies, when my wife brought up the idea of getting a puppy, I balked. I'd never spent any time with a puppy before; we got our first dog when he was two. With him, all the hard work was already done. But a new puppy, that sounded like a lot of work.

A few years back, I remember a friend telling me a puppy was harder to take care of than a baby. I had a six-month-old child at the time and this friend had no kids of his own. Once I realized he was being serious, I stopped laughing at his absurd statement. Now however, I could put his theory to the test. We've had our eight-week-old puppy for a week now, and I’m finding that there are many similarities between babies and puppies. Here are my conclusions so far.

• Both are as cute as can be. No doubt, God made babies and puppies adorable because let’s face it, they're both kind of a pain to deal with.

• Both treat urination like a full-time job. The only difference is that there's no diaper on the dog. It's a pee-for-all, free-for-all.

• Both are very fragile. Every time I pick up a baby or a puppy, I feel like Lenny from Of Mice and Men. • Both can be dangerous. A baby’s tiny fingernails are razor sharp, ditto puppy teeth.

• Both use their appendages to attach themselves to your body without letting go, like spider monkeys.

The one major difference in caring for a baby versus a puppy? There's no child equivalent to a puppy crate.

Yes, I know there are cribs and pack & plays, but I'm talking about a “this-dog-is-making-me-crazy-I'mputting-her-in-her-crate-so-I-can-go-to-Starbucks-andchill” type of enclosure. Until there is a legal version of that for kids, don't come to me with the theory that it's easier to take care of kids than puppies. Been there, done that and have the Starbucks receipts to prove it.

Annual Pinewood Derby Through April 3 Location: Indiana State Museum, downtown Indianapolis, indianamuseum.org/ On your mark, get set… for the second greatest spectacle in racing! The Indiana State Museum and Boy Scouts of America, Crossroads of America Council invite you to race your derby cars and watch as they zip down the two-story, 125-feet of track to cross the finish line. The track will be open to the public all week with the official race on Saturday, April 2. All participating cars must be registered by 1pm on race day.

Enter a derby car by 2pm for the ‘Best of Show’ competition. Cars will be awarded based on visual design. The track will remain open for Fun Runs on Sunday. Visit indianamuseum.org to view the Saturday competition rules and ‘Best of Show’ categories. Cost is $4/Scout and family.

Nickelodeon’s CG-animated series breathes new life into the popular characters and now families will be able to join the team at The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis.

Follow The North Star with Conner Prairie April 22-23, 29-30 Location: Conner Prairie Interactive History Park, Fishers, Connerprairie.org Become a fugitive slave on the Underground Railroad, fleeing from captivity, risking everything for freedom. Follow the North Star plays out as an intense, living drama where guests become actors on a 200-acre stage, running from slave hunters and working together to navigate the Underground Railroad to freedom. Tours leave every 15 minutes beginning at 6:30 pm. The entire experience lasts approximately 1 hour, 45 minutes. This activity is recommended for children ages 12 and up.

Kalila and Dimna is a classic Arabic collection of such fables, and this unique glimpse into why it was created and its similarities to tales in Western folklore invites conversations between two cultures.
