Round and round we go...

Did you know that Carmel is considered the unofficial roundabout capital of the United States? Over 60 roundabouts have been installed in Carmel. These additions have been credited with reducing the number of injury accidents by about 80% and the number of accidents overall by about 40%.

Landscaping is a key element to the function and safety of a roundabout. Another fun fact? In 2011, an international group of 380 people from as far away as Japan and Australia came to study the roundabouts in Carmel.

Last year 3,320 Girl Scouts in Hamilton County sold 317,784 packages! Operation: Cookie Drop, which sends cookies to military at Stout Field, Camp Atterbury and National Guard Armories, totaled 18,494 packages!

Girl Scout cookies cost $4 per package and girls will begin taking orders on January 11th to be delivered by the end of January / first of February. Cookies will also be sold by troops in front of stores like Marsh Supermarkets and other locations each weekend in February and early March.

AN INTERVIEW WITH

Derick “Dizzy” Grant Local Harlem Globetrotter discusses life on the court

Did you know we have a member of the world famous Harlem Globetrotters living right here in Fishers?

Derick Grant joins his wife Carly and little boy Hudson on our cover this issue and talks about what it’s like to be a member of this unique basketball team.

The Harlem Globetrotters are known worldwide and have such a rich history with fans. What’s it like to be a player for this team? Was becoming a Globetrotter always a goal for you?

We have been around for 88 years, so with that comes a lot of history and tradition. It's an honor being able to put on the red, white and blue jersey every night. Ever since I was young, I had always wanted to play professional basketball.

My parents took me to see the Globetrotters when I was 7 years old, and that was my introduction to the game of basketball.

All the Globetrotters have interesting nicknames – how did you get “Dizzy”?

Nicknames are given to players for either their on the court play, or their personalities. My nickname was given to me by my coaches and teammates cause they said when I make my moves my opponents look like they're dizzy.

What is something people don’t often know about the Globetrotters?

One thing people probably don't know about the Globetrotters is that we are very influential in the communities, going to over 300 schools and hospitals a year. Whether it is visiting schools to promote our ABC's of bullying prevention program or going to hospitals visiting patients with our S.M.I.L.E. Patrol, we love to be ambassadors of good will.

What’s the best part about your job?

The best part of my job is being able to be a positive influence on people's lives. Having the opportunity to touch so many people’s lives and bring families together to have a good time is very fulfilling. The same thing the Globetrotters did for me at the age of 7 is what I am doing for the generation of children coming up today.

Does Hudson have a basketball in his crib? Could there be a second generation Globetrotter in the family?

He already has about a half dozen basketballs scattered around the house. He loves basketball, especially when I spin the ball on my finger for him. His first word was "ball" so maybe there will be a "Dizzy Jr." on a jersey one day!

Want You to Know Ten essential tips for parents

Whether your child has a few months of preschool under his belt or will be entering school in the near future, you may find yourself wondering what you can do to help him have the best possible experience. With the help of Fishers resident Debra Pierce, Professor of Early Childhood Education at Ivy Tech Community College, we’ve listed ten “musts” for having a successful year.

1. Do a little social prep work before your child starts preschool. Parents can help ease children in to the social aspect of preschool by giving them some extra practice during play dates with other children, says Pierce. She also recommends getting your child as excited as possible about starting school, and if feasible, taking him or her for an introductory visit to meet the teacher and see the environment.

2. Don’t be too concerned about academics for children in the preschool age group. “Their job right now is to play and to learn through play,” says Pierce. She notes the two most important predictors of reading success and early vocabulary growth are reading to your child regularly and carrying on conversations with him or her.

3. Avoid sneaking out at drop-off time.

Create a short goodbye ritual that ends in your leaving, that is repeated each day. While Pierce says this approach doesn’t guarantee a tear-free exit, predictability makes the transition easier because the child knows what to expect.

4. Dress your child in play clothes.

“Children learn through their senses and need to get into stuff to learn,” says Pierce. “If they are in good clothes, they will be stifled from participating.”

5. Spend time in your child’s classroom.

By doing so, you can learn firsthand what’s going on there. Research shows parental involvement in school is critical to a child’s development and academic success.

6. Help the teacher better understand

your child. Pierce encourages parents to let

teachers know about changes or events at home that might affect the child’s behavior or mood.

“We are tuned in to each of the children in our care and notice when things are a bit off,” she says. “Help us out so we can be the supportive and caring teachers you expect us to be.”

7. Don’t project your fears onto your child.

Preschool children look to adults when deciding how to react to situations explains Pierce. “You never know if your child may end up being an entomologist and you wouldn’t want to foil that career by screaming over a spider on the playground!”

8. Keep sick kids home.

Licensing requires that a child be fever-free for at least 24 hours before returning to school. If a child is not feeling well, parents should assess whether she is going to be able to have a good time that day or just go through the motions.

9. Don’t ask for personal information on other students or families. Pierce notes that she is bound by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) Code of Ethics to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information. She adds, “Be glad I choose ethical practice and will not share anything you tell me about your family either.”

10. Pick your child up on time. “Although young children may not yet tell time, their inner clock absolutely knows when you are expected and they feel betrayed and mistrustful when you let them down,” says Pierce.

Following these ten simple tips should help make school days easier and more fun not only for your preschooler, but for you and the teacher as well!

Some of today’s hottest design trends are reinvented classics, proving you don’t have to break with tradition to get a new look that’s perfectly on trend. Here are some ideas for using classic design elements in fresh and exciting ways.

Go for the gold Brass is back. Now, if you’ve spent the last few years banishing brass faucets and door handles from your home, do not panic. The new look of brass is warmer and richer than shiny 1980s brass. Unlacquered brass is a popular choice for faucets and door hardware. It lacks the top polished layer that kept the 1980s brass looking forever bright and shiny. Unlacquered brass will tarnish with use, causing the metal to age and develop a beautiful patina.

Brass is not only making a comeback in traditional homes. It has crossed over into sleek, contemporary spaces. Warm brass tones, golds and satin golds are showing up in furniture, accessories, plumbing and lighting fixtures, cabinet hardware and even kitchen appliances.

If you’re hesitant to embrace brass, try adding just a touch of it. Brass really pops when paired with black or navy. Yet, it looks equally at home with white and lighter colors for a crisp, classic look. Take a walk on the wild side Animal prints are a design classic that are becoming increasingly predominant in fashion and interior design. Animal prints are available in nearly every type of fabric and can be used to add exotic allure, graphic interest or a bit of whimsy to a room. This year you can expect to see beautiful animal-inspired prints on everything from wallpaper and drapes to pillows and accessories.

Popular choices for animal prints include leopard, zebra, cow, ostrich and cheetah. Leopard print is especially hot right now, and its tone-ontone design makes it a terrific neutral.

Follow the paper trail Wallpaper is back in vogue with a vengeance, and there is a veritable treasure trove of options.

Beautiful wallcoverings are available in brilliant geometric patterns, modern floral and botanical prints, subtle tone-on-tone patterns and grasscloth in every color imaginable. Metallic and textured wallpaper, faux bois and wallpaper that mimics the look of fabric are popular choices.

My home is in a constant state of disarray and I think I could use the help of a professional organizer.

What exactly does this service entail?

Getting organized is a process that involves many steps to achieve a successful outcome. First, a professional organizer will conduct an assessment with you to determine the current state in the home and what your organizing goals are. For example: How many people live in the home? What are the areas of distress? Is mail constantly being misplaced? Are bills paid late? Does it take forever to find the clothes you want to wear each morning? What systems are in place (or not)? What is your budget for purchasing necessary organizing materials? What would an organized space look and feel like to you?

With a thorough assessment, the organizer creates a plan and develops systems that fit you, your family and your lifestyle. The plan becomes the foundation for the organizing work, which is broken down into distinct steps. The first is sorting, separating items into like categories. Then the purging process begins where decisions to reduce, recycle or reuse are made. An organizer is trained to assist with the more difficult decisions associated with letting items go. Once remaining items are determined, an organizer helps with identifying the best location to store them and the appropriate storage to contain them. Finally, with an organized space and customized systems in place, establishing a maintenance routine to keep things in order is easier to accomplish. A professional organizer helps turn the chaos into calm to create an environment that supports the life you desire in your home.

So much of my “clutter” is actually very sentimental to me.

Will a professional organizer be sensitive to this?

My grandma had a vast collection of angels given to her by friends and family and collected from her travels around the world. She had them numbered and cataloged and displayed them proudly every Christmas. She died more than 20 years ago and I remember our family agonizing what we were going to do with all of grandma’s angels.

It was painful to think about giving them away. So my mom packed them away to deal with when it wouldn’t be so difficult. Had my parents not had the space to store the angels, and many other possessions, their house would have been a cluttered mess or they would have paid for storage.

It is normal to hold on to meaningful items. An organizer is a person you can trust to work with you through the emotional process, not against you. I recommend interviewing several organizers before committing to one you find online. Organizers have different personalities and approaches and you want to find one who you work well with.

You can work with an organizer or on your own to begin your de-clutter goal. If you aren’t ready to purge, take pictures of your items and put things in question boxes. You’ll have the pictures to look at if needed and the items won’t be far, packed away safe and dry. After six months take another look at the items and make choices whether to keep or give away the items.

What questions should I ask a professional organizer before hiring one? What qualifications should he or she have?

The first questions actually begin with you.

Why have you reached out for help with disorganization – what is your overall goal?

Do you have specific areas that you struggle with or is the problem more generalized? Do you need to find someone that specializes in chronic disorganization or time management?

Knowing the “type” of professional organizer you may need, before you start the interview process, can quickly help you narrow down your choices.

Two great websites to review are the National Association of Professional Organizers, NAPO, (www.napo.net) and the Institute for Challenging Disorganization, ICD, (www. challengingdisorganization.org). Both offer information that pertains to the more specific attributes of professional organizing. The area a professional organizer specializes in and the certifications they hold are just a few examples of what you may find there. There is also a “search” feature located on the main page to help locate a professional within your area.

Once you have decided on a few candidates, prepare some written questions to ask, such as: Where did they receive their training? Do they hold any certifications? How long have they been in business? Are they insured and bonded? Do they offer references? How do they charge? How many people are on site during a session? Many professional organizers offer a no-cost consultation to help answer these questions. With just a little research and directed questions, you will be on your way to finding the right professional organizer for you.

Healthful Apps Using technology to start your new year off strong!

Remember when phones were for calling people?

Today, chances are good that someone close to you is not just using their phone to text friends, surf social media or check their email, they’re also using it to help them lose weight or manage a health condition.

But are these increasingly popular health-related smartphone apps actually effective?

Questionable value The IMS Institute for Healthcare Informatics recently released results of the largest scientific study of its kind into healthcare apps.

The research team deemed around 16,200 apps in the Apple app store to be legitimate healthcare apps for consumers. They tested and ranked those apps in a wide range of categories, such as functionality and quantity and quality of information.

The results were not exactly impressive. On a 100 point scale, more than 90% of the apps received 40 points or less. But a few rose to the top. Here are just a few examples of health-related apps that the IMS Institute deemed more useful than the rest.

Weight loss One of the most downloaded health apps in the Apple app store, the Calorie Counter and Diet Tracker by MyFitnessPal HD, received high marks in the IMS Institute study. In this app, you are asked to enter the foods you eat into a diary, and the app does the math for you, along with setting exercise and weight goals and linking you to friends. The Calorie Counter PRO app by MyNetDiary Inc. also received a good rating. But although the study found the information in these apps to be useful, it’s important to note there is no solid evidence that these apps are effective in helping you lose weight.

Diabetes The IMS Institute study liked the Daily Carb app by Maxwell Software. It helps you track your daily intake of food and water, along with blood sugar levels and insulin doses. Also ranking highly in this category were Glucose Buddy by Azumio Inc., and GoMeals

by Sanofi-Aventis U.S. LLC.

Another diabetes app worth noting, Tipping Points by WellDoc Diabetes Management, is one of only about 100 health apps that are approved by the FDA. This app is also rare in that it’s been tested in a clinical trial, which found it was effective in improving patients’ blood sugar management.

Cancer Could your phone help you catch cancer at its earliest stages?

Apps like Dr. K's Breast Checker offer interactive tools and reminders to help women keep track of changes in their breasts.

Another cancer-related app ranking high in the study was SkinKeeper. This app helps users monitor moles, assess their risk factors through personal and family skin history and share their data with their doctor.

Fertility Whether you’re hoping to expand your family, or to ensure that you DON’T add three more years of diapers to your life experience, apps like the Ovulation Calendar can help you predict your fertile days by tracking your menstrual cycle, body weight and temperature. If you have a baby on board, your phone can also help you learn about and celebrate each stage of pregnancy with apps like Pregnancy Tracker from WhatToExpect.com, which the study ranked highly.

Diagnosis Answers to your medical questions can be found at your fingertips through HealthTap, an app that provides free, vetted health information from doctors for any symptom, condition, medication or health concern. Also ranking highly in the study was WebMD for iPad, which offers a symptom checking program, plus information on drugs and treatments, first aid and local health listings.

Healthy skepticism Any health app is only as good as the data you provide it, and, keep in mind, it will likely be less personalized and less private than a health care professional. What has your experience been?

Recently, my daughter asked to make dinner for our family. Normally when we cook together, I take the lead and she helps. This time we switched roles; she took charge and I only assisted. When we sat down together as a family to enjoy the meal she prepared, not only were our bellies filled, but also her spirit from the compliments she received on the tasty meal. If you are looking for a new year’s resolution, consider getting your children more actively involved in meal preparation once a week. By taking part in the process, not only will they be more likely to finish their meal, but family memories will be made as well. Here’s an easy recipe for getting started.

9 whole wheat lasagna noodles 1 cup part-skim mozzarella, divided 1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese 2 cups total of finely chopped vegetables of choice (broccoli, carrots, red peppers, spinach, mushrooms, squash, etc.)

• 2 cups 1% low-fat cottage cheese • 1 tsp Italian seasoning • 1 1/2 - 2 cups of your favorite marinara or tomato sauce *Planning Tip: Go to www.eatright.org/kids for healthy recipes and ideas to help get your children involved in the kitchen.

STEPS 1. Cook lasagna noodles according to package directions. Drain and rinse well under cold water. Place in a single layer on aluminum foil.

2. Place chopped vegetables in a microwave safe dish. Add 2 tablespoons water to vegetables, cover loosely with plastic wrap. Microwave for 1 1/2 minutes. Let the vegetables sit covered after cooking for about 5 minutes. Drain excess water.

3. In a mixing bowl, combine low-fat cottage cheese, 1/2 cup mozzarella cheese, parmesan cheese and Italian seasoning. Mix well. Stir in chopped vegetables to make filling.

4. Spray a 12 x 8-inch baking pan with non-stick cooking spray and set aside.

5. Spread about 1/3 cup filling over each lasagna noodle. Roll up noodles and place seam side down in baking pan. Spoon about 1/4 cup of marinara sauce over each lasagna roll.

6. Cover with the foil and bake at 375º for 20 minutes. Remove from oven and take off foil.

Sprinkle each roll with remaining mozzarella cheese. Bake an additional 10 minutes or until cheese is melted.

Expect the Unexpected Pregnancy body talk – girlfriend style

A little bundle of joy is on the way – you’ve read the pamphlets and talked to your doctor so it’s no surprise when you experience nausea, weight gain, fatigue and unusual food cravings. Then without warning, you develop Fred Flintstone feet, your breasts feel as heavy as Mount Rushmore and your memory is as fuzzy as a Georgia peach. All of this causing you to think to yourself, “Well, I never expected that to happen.”

Although the physical and emotional changes that arrive with pregnancy differ from woman to woman, most agree that several of these changes are unexpected. Some Hamilton County moms were willing to share – girlfriend to girlfriend – their own pregnancy experiences that were surprising to them.

Stacy Y. is one of those moms who never got a proper heads up about what to expect the day her breast milk came in. “I was never told that my breasts would become hard as rocks…how about leaking through your nursing pads but not knowing it until the cashier at the grocery store subtly tells you.”

Lisa M.’s mother in-law taught her a natural remedy for drying up her breast milk with the use of cabbage leaves inside each bra cup. “I smelled like cabbage for a week, but it worked!”

“A lot of it is our culture. In this country, we don’t spend a lot of time talking about the actual functions of the human body. So many people have no understanding of a menstrual cycle or how pregnancy works. You may not have heard about some of these symptoms from your sister, mother or girlfriends because they may not have realized it was normal and they just thought they were the weird ones.”

Dr. Craig’s philosophy is that it takes a long time to grow a baby, so it may take a long time to get your post-baby body functions back to normal. She found the book The Girlfriends’ Guide to Pregnancy

by Vicki Iovine helpful to her personally when expecting her own children, as even medical school only covers the clinical basics. Dr. Craig believes more emphasis should be placed on having an open dialogue with mothers on what it is like to bring a baby home, newborn care, taking care of themselves and breastfeeding rather than just labor and delivery.

So, while for some moms pregnancy brings luxurious hair, strong fingernails and a general “glow”, many others will wonder what strange symptom will befall them next. Veteran moms can help moms-to-be by sharing these lesser known experiences – letting them know that not only are they not alone, but actually part of a very special sisterhood now.

Another possible side effect of pregnancy? Uncontrollable intestinal gas. Karla F. referred to this experience as a “I’m sorry, it just slipped” moment.

Post-birth swelling can result in a few unexpected problems as well. Tracy G. shared, “Clearly you're going to use the hover method in a public restroom. No one told me that your urine no longer goes in a nice stream. It's kind of spraying all over – which does not work when you're trying to hover.”

According to Candace B., “I was so swollen ‘downtown’ that I thought I was sitting on something. I told the nurse and pointed it out and she said ‘honey, that's just you.’”

With nearly 4 million births a year according to the Centers for Disease Control, why aren’t these symptoms common knowledge?

Mommy Magic Patience versus Panic How do you react to the world? by: Mary Susan Buhner, mom of 3

Recently I was sitting at a stop light off of 116th Street. I was first in the lane and when the light turned green, before I could even step on the gas pedal, the driver behind me honked. I was not dilly-dallying, but apparently wasn’t moving fast enough for the car that was waiting.

I assumed if the driver was honking he must have an emergency and would pass me. He did not. We stopped again at the next light. Again, I was the first car in the lane and he was behind me. The light turned green and immediately he honked for me to go. This time he honked longer as if to express with his horn, “GOOOOOOO!” This silly experience got me thinking about patience versus panic.

Patience or panic – two very different perspectives for managing family, work, schedules and interactions with others. Patience is actually not something I was born with a lot of 42 years ago. Although it doesn't come naturally to me, I have learned this quality over the years. First, I married the world's most patient man ever. So patient in fact, it can make me impatient just watching him being so patient!

Secondly, I have three children. This experience in and of itself has been a boot camp for patience over the past decade. Each child has their own set of circumstances that has stretched me to develop this characteristic. My youngest daughter has a genetic eye issue and struggles to sound out words and read due to her vision. As I sit and listen to her, I am reminded to be more patient with her. My middle daughter was born legally deaf.

This experience has definitely taught me to be more patient. My oldest daughter is a teenager and a good kid, but nonetheless a teenager and I am often taking deep breaths to exercise more patience with her.

Those who don’t try to be patient always seem to be in a panic.

We all know someone who makes a big deal out of something

small. They speak fast and run all their words together like there might not be enough time to finish their thought. Exhausting. I don’t like to witness panic, let alone to feel panicked. I really believe how you handle the little things in life says a lot about how you handle the big stuff.

Do you have patience while checking out at the grocery, sitting in traffic or helping kids with homework? If so, than you probably have the same temperament with more complicated things.

If not, try to exercise more of it – for yourself and as an example to your children. Let them see you offering patience to others – even if it only means waiting a few seconds for someone to go on a green light.

It can be amusing – or exasperating – when our kids act just like us. There’s a reason for that old saying “the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.” Do you have a “mini me” in your household?

What quirk or funny characteristic do you see in your child that you can identify in yourself or your spouse?

A terrible sense of humor (awful puns) and jokes that don't quite make sense – this would be like their dad. – Julie G. My 6 year old daughter has to sleep in socks every night, just like me. She eats her salads with no dressing, just like me and she sleeps with her mouth wide open, just like me!! – Kelly B. My son and husband have the exact same birth mark in the same spot.
