The Indiana Wesleyan University School of Nursing offers a four-year Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing. Indiana Wesleyan University’s first graduating nursing class was in 1975. The program is well-established and has a National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) pass rate well above the national average. The Pre-licensure Nursing program has the largest major on campus.

TRANSCULTURAL REQUIREMENT The transcultural experience is one of the unique features of Indiana Wesleyan University’s nursing program. Each student takes a transcultural theory course and participates in a transcultural practicum. This practicum will consist of working with a culture different than his/her own, a health care center in an emerging nation or a subculture in North America.

CRITERIA FOR ADMISSION TO THE PRE-LICENSURE NURSING MAJOR AT THE SOPHOMORE LEVEL Application Requirements • Complete Foundations of Nursing, Anatomy and Physiology I and II, Introduction to Organic and Biological Chemistry, Introduction to Microbiology and the University math requirement (MAT 113 preferred) with a minimum grade of C. • Take 29 semester hours with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75.

• Complete the Test of Academic Skills (TEAS) with a 65% comprehensive score.

• Acquire the American Heart Association (AHA), Basic Life Support (BLS) CPR Certification.

GUARANTEED ACCEPTANCE PATHWAY (GAP) First-time Freshman Eligibilty

• Fulfill the health clearance requirements. (see p. 12)

A direct entry program, Guaranteed Acceptance Pathway (GAP), is available as a streamlined pathway into clinical coursework for high school students who meet the following eligibility requirements.

ELIGIBILITY • High school seniors with a cumulative GPA of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale.

• Fully accepted at Indiana Wesleyan University as a fulltime, first-time freshman (not available to transfer students).

• An ACT score of 22 or higher, or RSAT of 1110 or higher.

• High school coursework that includes 4 years of English, 3 years of math including algebra, natural sciences including one chemistry and one biology course.

• Students must complete prerequisites and maintain a 2.75 GPA during their freshman year.

• Request a criminal background check through the Nursing program.

• Submit an application for admission to the School of Nursing.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHAT IS THE PRE-LICENSURE PROGRAM? The Pre-licensure Nursing program is a four-year baccalaureate program. It is located in Marion, Indiana. Our nursing courses are taught during the fall and spring semesters.

HOW DO I PREPARE FOR THE NURSING PROGRAM AT IWU? Anatomy, physiology, microbiology, chemistry, algebra and/or statistics, English and writing provide a good foundation for nursing.

ETA CHI CHAPTER OF SIGMA THETA TAU INTERNATIONAL Purpose: The Eta Chi chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International, the Honor Society of Nursing, provides leadership and scholarship in practice, education, and research to enhance the health of people worldwide. Eta Chi is a part of an international community of 260,000 nurses in more than 70 countries dedicated to scholarly activities, excellence in clinical practice, and leadership at all levels of nursing practice. A goal of Sigma Theta Tau is improved health care for all clients. The international headquarters, which includes the Virginia Henderson International Library, is located in Indianapolis, Indiana.

WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS FOR CHE120—INTRODUCTION TO ORGANIC & BIOLOGICAL CHEMISTRY? CHE120 requires either a SAT math score of 400 or above, a SATI math at or above 440, a ACT math score at or above 19, and a science course with grades of C or higher.

I DIDN’T TAKE CHEMISTRY IN HIGH SCHOOL. AM I STILL ABLE TO BE A NURSING MAJOR? Yes, Introduction to Chemistry (CHE110) is a course designed for students who didn’t take high school chemistry. This course gives students a background in chemistry before taking Introduction to Organic and Biological Chemistry (CHE120).

DO YOU ACCEPT ADVANCED PLACEMENT (AP) COURSES? Yes, credit will be given for scores of 3 or above on Advanced Placement exams. See the IWU Catalog for more information. High school AP science courses do not transfer in for our prerequisite science courses.

IS IT POSSIBLE TO FINISH THE NURSING PROGRAM EARLY BY TAKING COURSES DURING THE SUMMER? No, after students are accepted into the nursing major, it will take six academic semesters to complete the required nursing courses. We suggest nursing students use their summers to work in health care settings.

ARE MATH COURSES REQUIRED? Yes, a math course is required for admission into the nursing major. MAT107 (MAT113 preferred) or higher at IWU with a grade of C or higher will meet the requirement. Placement in math courses is determined by SAT or ACT scores. An approved college math transfer course (College Math, Algebra, etc.) may also be acceptable.

DO SCIENCE COURSES TRANSFER? The syllabi for the lecture and lab for each transfer science course must be reviewed by the University to determine transfer equivalency. If it is not approved, completion of the course offered here at IWU will be required.

WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS FOR ACCEPTANCE INTO THE NURSING MAJOR? All academic requirements must be met by Aug. 15 for the fall admission or Dec. 15 for the spring admission into the Nursing program at the sophomore level. Academic prerequisites include meeting the math requirement, passing the TEAS with a score of 65% or above, successfully passing Foundations of Nursing (NUR145), completing all four of the required science courses with a grade of C or higher, and earning a cumulative GPA of 2.75.

WHEN WILL CLINICALS BEGIN? After a student is accepted into the Nursing program, clinicals will begin the first semester during the sophomore year.

WHAT KIND OF ACADEMIC SUPPORT IS AVAILABLE? The Nursing Educational Resource Specialist is a full-time employee available to students for academic support unique to nursing students, including time management, study and testtaking strategies.

HEALTH CLEARANCE REQUIREMENTS Documentation of the following requirements is mandatory in order to be eligible to participate in clinicals. The Division of Pre-licensure Nursing uses a secure online document management system to retain these records.

1. Criminal Background Check A criminal background check is required before students may participate in clinicals. This background check must be completed through the company approved by the Division of Pre-licensure Nursing.

2. Physical Examination Students must submit a Health Clearance Form, which has been completed by a health care provider. The form is provided by the Division of Pre-licensure Nursing and available on the University website.

3. PPD/TB Skin Test The administration and results of this test must be documented and renewed annually.

4. MMR Documentation Two documented doses of MMR vaccine or positive measles, mumps and rubella titers are required. Each student’s file must contain a copy of the positive titre lab report. If the original titre is negative, documentation for additional MMR immunization is required.

CPR CERTIFICATION Certification in the American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) course is required for all nursing students. The Division of Pre-licensure Nursing uses email to notify students of the CPR workshops held on campus. The CPR offered in the First Aid class, (PHE229/PHE230) at IWU does not meet this requirement. It is the student’s responsibility to maintain active CPR certification. Students are not permitted to attend clinical if the CPR documentation is outdated.

5. Hepatitis B Immunization A series of three (3) Hepatitis B vaccine injections are required. The initial dose is given, then repeated at one month and six months after initial dose.

6. Tdap Immunization Documentation for a current Tdap (Tetanus, diptheria and pertussis) is required.

7. Varicella Documentation Two documented doses of varicella vaccine or a positive titre is required. If the titre is drawn, a copy of the lab report is required. If the original titre is negative, documentation for two varicella immunizations, given one month apart is required.

8. Flu Immunization Documentation of a flu immunization is required each year.

9. Drug Screen The Clinical Coordinator will alert students when this is needed. If administered too far in advance, it will not be considered current. Additional urine drug screens may be required prior to starting some clinicals based on clinical agency requirements. This screen is offered at the IWU Health Center.
