Associate Professor of Music and Chair, Division of MusicTo God be the glory, great things He hath done, So loved He the world that He gave us His Son, Who yielded His life an atonement for sin, And opened the life-gate that all may go in.
Refrain:
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, Let the earth hear His voice; Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, Let the people rejoice; Oh, come to the Father, through Jesus the Son, And give Him the glory; great things He hath done.
Oh, perfect redemption, the purchase of blood, To every believer the promise of God; The vilest offender who truly believes, That moment from Jesus a pardon receives.
Refrain
Great things He hath taught us, great things He hath done, And great our rejoicing through Jesus the Son; But purer, and higher, and greater will be Our wonder, our transport when Jesus we see.

THE ACADEMIC REGALIA
The academic regalia worn on formal occasions in American colleges and universities is rooted in the medieval traditions of the great thirteenth century universities of EuropeParis, Bologna, Cambridge, and Oxford. The use of gowns, caps, and hoods reminds us of the honorable antecedents of academic life. They link the clerical dignity and importance of teaching and scholarship in the past to the vibrant life of the university in the present and are emblems of a purposeful future for university graduates.
In 1895, American universities agreed on a uniform system of academic dress. This code was revised in 1932 by the American Council on Education, but the various and distinctive local university traditions of more recent years have added great color and a variety of styles to the academic procession. The academic story is usually told in the distinctive style and color of gown, cap, and hood.
The Gown: The flowing black habit of the medieval cleric has become the normative black academic robe. It once gave warmth to the wearer in unheated monastery buildings of stone. The robe for the bachelor’s degree is usually plain with pointed sleeves. The robe for the master’s degree has long closed sleeves with a slit at the arm. The doctor’s robe has full bell sleeves with a facing of velvet on the front and velvet chevrons on the sleeve. The velvet is either black or in the color representing the appropriate academic discipline.
Robe colors other than black are the colors of the sponsoring university. The President’s robe is decorated with a dark blue panel and four chevrons on the sleeves representing the office of the president. The medallion worn by the President is a replica of the University seal and is made of sterling silver with a gold overlay.
The Cap: Most caps are in the traditional pattern of the square “mortarboard” set on the monk’s skull cap. The tassel is either black or in the color of the academic discipline. Doctors’ caps usually have a tassel of gold and vary from the traditional square to a velvet in three, four, or eight points.
The Hood: Originally a true hood for covering the head in wind and weather, the academic hood is now the colorful story of the scholar’s academic life. The hood is faced with velvet of a color representing the academic discipline. The trim and lining, often with a chevron in a second color inside the hood, is the color of the sponsoring university.
One can identify the academic discipline by the color of the velvet face trim on the hood:
INDIANA WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY
Indiana Wesleyan University is an evangelical Christian comprehensive university of The Wesleyan Church, which has its world headquarters in Indianapolis. The University was founded in 1920 and is committed to liberal arts and professional education.
With a current enrollment of more than 11,000 students, IWU is recognized by U.S. News & World Report as one of the top 30 Regional Universities in the Midwest. IWU is one of the largest institutions in the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities (CCCU) and the 2nd largest private university in the state of Indiana.
IWU is organized into three Principal Academic Units:
•The College of Adult and Professional Studies: Providing educational opportunities for working adults through instruction at locations in Indiana, Kentucky and Ohio and across the globe through online instruction, the College of Adult and Professional Studies serves approximately 8,500 students, with cutting edge undergraduate and graduate programs relevant to today’s workplace.
•The College of Arts and Sciences: Founded on a traditional, residential educational model enriched by innovative instructional programs, the College of Arts and Sciences serves approximately 2,200 students in both undergraduate and graduate programs in over 80 liberal arts, pre-professional and professional major fields.
•Wesley Seminary: With more than 500 Master of Arts in Ministry, Master of Divinity, and Doctor of Ministry students, the first seminary of The Wesleyan Church is impacting congregations throughout the country. The Master of Divinity program provides onthe-job ministry training in an innovative format both onsite and online and offers an accredited Spanish Master of Divinity program, with most of the coursework completed online.
During the past three decades, new construction and renovation have transformed IWU’s Marion campus into a low-debt, modern, student-focused facility. The addition of Ott Hall of Sciences and Nursing provides additional research opportunities for undergraduate faculty and students, houses the School of Nursing, including an enlarged and enhanced simulation lab, and the School of Health Sciences’ classrooms and labs. IWU also offers adult and professional studies programs and conference services at 10 regional sites in Indiana, Kentucky, and Ohio.
Each leading-edge education center, designed to meet the needs of busy adults, is equipped with state-of-the-art classrooms, computers, electronic library access, study rooms, and break areas.
The University’s mission is to change the world by developing students in character, scholarship and leadership. IWU employs a well-credentialed faculty that annually receives national and international recognition for teaching, research and creative performance. Many hold national leadership positions in their respective fields.
IWU’s Center for Life Calling and Leadership earned a national reputation for excellence rooted in groundbreaking research and innovative application. The Center’s work continues through the Life Calling Research Institute and the School of Life Calling and Integrative Learning. These entities provide counseling, testing, and mentoring at key transition points during the college experience to help students identify their unique sense of calling, purpose and career fit.
IWU’s John Wesley Honors College, which is recognized as a national leader in collegiate honors education, attracts students each year who have graduated at the very top of their high school classes and have scored in the highest percentiles nationally in SAT and ACT scores.
IWU faculty members have received awards from Fulbright, the National Endowment for the Humanities and the National Student Advocate.
Indiana Wesleyan University has 21 intercollegiate sports teams and participates in the Crossroads League (CL), the Mid-States Football Association (MSFA), and the Mid-South Conference (MSC) of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). Recent teams have competed in NAIA national championships in Volleyball, Men’s and Women’s Cross Country, Men’s and Women’s Soccer, Football, Men’s and Women’s Basketball, Women’s Swimming and Diving, Competitive Cheer, Softball, Baseball, Women’s Golf, Men’s and Women’s Track and Field, and Men’s and Women’s Tennis.
INDIANA WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY MACE
The mace, a stylized modification of an ancient war club, serves as the symbol of jurisdiction and authority based on moral and intellectual leadership of the university, administration and faculty. The Indiana Wesleyan University mace is hand-carved of cherry in a triangular design. The headpiece contains the current university seal, accompanied by carvings of the original seal of Marion College and the Administration Building entrance.
PHOTO INFORMATION
A professional photographer will take two individual photos of all graduates, one posed photo prior to and one as their degrees are awarded. Students will be given an opportunity to purchase prints by mail within a couple of weeks following the ceremony.
To avoid confusion with the procession of graduates, we ask that you take any pictures from your seats. Thank you. If you have any questions, an usher will be glad to assist you.
