KEY TO THE FUTURE NEW SCIENTIFIC MASTERPLAN AIMED AT DRIVING INNOVATION Australia’s peak science body, the CSIRO, has released a new five-year master plan aimed at improving innovation and to assist in dealing with global industrial changes. The strategy for 2015-2020, outlines how the CSIRO will become a global collaboration hub. CSIRO chief executive Dr Larry Marshall said Australia currently ranks 81st in the world when it comes to innovation efficiency. Australia needs to get a better return on scientific investment and improve its standing in innovation performance, he said. “We need to get more ‘bang for our buck’ when we transform innovation investment into results.” Dr Marshall said if our global

innovation ranking was a team sport ranking, we’d be outraged. “As a country, we need to work together to improve this result.” The 90-year-old science body is Australia’s largest patent holder, with many significant global achievements including fast Wi-Fi, extended-wear contact lenses and the development of the Hendra vaccine. For its strategy review, the CSIRO crowd-sourced ideas and suggestions from more than 7000 people including research partners, other collaborators, its own staff and the public. “At the core of the strategy is the need for CSIRO to be a catalyst for change and growth in the innovation system in Australia. Innovation is a
team sport,” says Dr Marshall. “We must form new bonds and collaborate across disciplines, sectors, science and business. That is where profound innovation happens – at the intersection of these areas.
