Manufacturers must become more innovative or face extinction, warns industry expert

Australian manufacturers must evolve with changing times if they are survive and thrive. Raymond Spencer, chairman of South Australia’s influential Economic Development Board, delivered this strong message at a special presentation in Adelaide last month. Mr Spencer told guests at the BrandSA presentation that Australian manufacturers cannot succeed “purely on cost” against low cost economies unless they work smarter. “In a high cost environment like Australia, innovation is critical,” he said. “We have to do everything the smartest

way possible. “Successful manufacturing companies have a culture of innovation in all aspects of their business.” Mr Spencer said Australia’s productivity performance in the past decade has been “absolutely abysmal.” “That must change, or we will never be successful at manufacturing.” Mr Spencer said Australia must be a country that manufactures things. “We all agree with that … but really we need to be a country that manufactures things that people will buy.” And we should not only be targeting buyers in Australia, but in selected
