Manufacturing will bounce back after languishing in the shadow of the mining investment boom, according to a new report.

The Grattan Institute report says that far from being permanently damaged, industries sensitive to the exchange rate, such as manufacturing, tourism, education and agriculture, "survived the boom in reasonable shape."

The findings follow a spate of recent plant closures and manufacturing job losses in recent years. The car and steel industries, in particular, have been hard hit.

Despite large Government handouts Ford announced earlier this year it would

GLOBAL 3 D PRINTING GIANTS MERGE Stratasys Ltd, a leader in 3D printing and additive manufacturing, and MakerBot, a leader in desktop 3D printing, have signed a definitive merger agreement.

Privately held MakerBot has agreed to merge with a subsidiary of Stratasys in a stock-for-stock transaction.

MakerBot, founded in 2009, helped develop the desktop 3D printing market and has built the largest installed base of 3D printers in the category by making 3D printers highly accessible. The company has sold more than 22,000 3D printers since 2009.

In the last nine months, the MakerBot Replicator 2 Desktop 3D Printer accounted for 11,000 of those sales.

The combination of these two industry leaders is expected to drive faster adoption of 3D printing for multiple applications and industries, as desktop 3D printers are becoming a mainstream tool across many market segments.

Upon completion of the transaction, MakerBot will operate as a separate subsidiary of Stratasys, maintaining its own identity, products and go-to-market strategy.

The merger enhances Stratasys' leadership position in the rapidly growing

3D printer market, by enabling Stratasys to offer affordable desktop 3D printers together with a seamless user experience.

The merger is expected to be completed during the third quarter of this year. It is subject to regulatory approvals and other conditions customary for such transactions.

The MakerBot 3D Ecosystem drives the accessibility and rapid adoption of their desktop 3D printers. It includes Thingiverse.com, the largest collection of downloadable digital designs for making physical objects, and which is empowered by a growing community of makers and creators. The MakerBot 3D Ecosystem

also includes MakerWare software, MakerCare service, MakerBot Filament, the MakerBot Retail Store, the MakerBot 3D Photo Booth, and strategic partnerships with Autodesk, Adafruit, Nokia, OUYA, MoMA and Amazon. MakerBot recently announced it will further extend its 3D Ecosystem with the MakerBot Digitizer desktop 3D scanner.

“This suggests the need to examine the design of the safety eyewear and/or improve the training of workers so that they know how to properly wear the eye protection,” the report concludes.

Employers are responsible for the welfare and safety of their employees.

Caring for the health of an employees’ eyesight is crucial for their optimal performance and comfort at work.

Inadequate or inappropriate eye protection and failure to observe occupational health and safety practices are the major causes of workplace eye injuries.

An Industry Update investigation has found that many Australian workers are currently using industrial safety glasses that are not certified to Australian standards.

The use of the correct safety glasses ensures the safety of workers and helps employers avoid injury related costs.

The majority of injuries result from small particles or objects striking or abrading the eye, usually treated by the local doctor or optometrist. Examples include metal slivers, wood chips, dust, and cement chips that are ejected by tools or windblown.

Some of these objects, such as nails or slivers of wood or metal penetrate the

eyeball and may result in a permanent loss of vision. People with visual impairment are more susceptible to injury.

And some substances can seriously burn or irritate your eyes. This may happen if liquids splash into your eyes, or if you touch your eyes when your fingers have chemicals on them, or if a vapour gets into your eyes.

Some substances can pass through the eye membrane and enter your bloodstream.

Les Cameron, senior health and safety inspector with Worksafe VIC, has attended numerous incidents involving eye injuries ranging from chemical exposures to foreign objects and battery explosions.

Many of those workers suffered serious eye injuries because of inadequate protective equipment.

In one case a Victorian employee was injured when a battery exploded while jumpstarting a battery system on an excavator. The employee sustained serious injuries to the head, neck and eyes due to acid from the battery and a piece from the battery casing penetrating his eye.

Mr Cameron is himself a victim of a workplace accident several years ago.

He was not wearing appropriate eye protection at the time.

Mr Cameron sustained an eye injury when hit with a metallic foreign object while working with an air gun. This required a three-hour drive to a Darwin hospital to have the object removed.

Fortunately, he quickly recovered – and his employer purchased and enforced eye protection following the incident.

Mr Cameron says it is imperative for employers and employees to choose safety glasses that are certified to Australian standards.

“In my opinion my eyesight is more important to me than any dollar value placed on the cost of personal protective equipment,” Mr Cameron says.

Some good news at last.

After several years in the doldrums due in part to an abnormally strong Aussie dollar, there is now light at the end of the tunnel for Australia’s manufacturing industry.

A new report prepared by the Grattan Institute suggests manufacturing will bounce back from the mining investment boom.

The report says that far from being permanently damaged, industries sensitive to the exchange rate, such as manufacturing, tourism, education and agriculture "survived the boom in reasonable shape."

The report says that rather than killing manufacturing, the mining boom "temporarily accelerated" its long-term decline as a share of gross domestic product.

It’s no secret that manufacturing has been in decline in Australia for more than two decades. But despite recent plants closures and job losses they are now reasons for optimism.

The Australian dollar has fallen significantly from its lofty highs (about a15 percent fall since April). This spells good news – particularly for exporters.

If it falls even further as predicted by many economists Australia will again become very globally competitive.

The Grattan report cited 13 countries similar to Australia where manufacturing grew rapidly after the exchange rate came down.

Within three years, manufacturing exports as a share of GDP had risen by more than a third on average, the report found.

Manufacturing constitutes about 8 per cent of the economy and employs more than 950,000.

Both major parties have pledged support for the manufacturing sector.

And both sides have firm strategies in place to ensure this sector survives and prospers.

Despite the gloom and doom, both sides remain optimistic about the future of manufacturing in Australia.

The outcome of the forthcoming federal election will be vital in determining whether manufacturing will grow and flourish in Australia.

The weakening Australian dollar has given the embattled manufacturing sector – particularly exporters – some much-needed respite.

The dollar is now hovering around US.92c – its lowest level in nearly three years. But while many manufacturers have collectively blown a huge sigh of relief – there are still many challenges ahead.

Australia remains a high cost country and struggles to compete with its low cost Asian neighbours.

Ford’s decision to close its Australian manufacturing plants rams home this point.

When announcing the decision Ford president Bob Graziano said: "Our costs are double that of Europe and nearly four times Ford in Asia."

In other words, manufacturing Ford vehicles in Australia is not a viable option.

It’s not just the strong Australian dollar that has put pressure on the sector.

Manufacturing is being strangled by government red tape and regulatory duplication.

Businesses are struggling to cope with high costs, including rising unit labour costs and steeply rising energy costs.

All of these issues have reduced the competitiveness of Australian companies.

If that’s not enough, a recent AiGroup survey of 330 small business owners found that IR reform is their biggest concern.

Almost a quarter (23.1 percent) said more flexible IR policies would greatly assist in boosting productivity.

Recent changes to the Fair Work Act have made it increasingly difficult for business to operate effectively.

Unions bitterly complained that the Howard Government’s controversial Work Choices laws were slanted strongly in favour of employers.

Under the Gillard/Rudd Labor government, following strong union pressure, the pendulum has swung back in favour of the worker– much to the detriment of many small businesses.

The AiGroup now rightly argues that urgent changes are now needed in a number of key areas to provide greater flexibility to employers and to “rebalance” the current “excessive weight” given to union interests.

Manufacturers are now looking for genuine commitment and action in this area from the next government.

The future of Australia’s manufacturing sector depends on it.

MANUFACTURING SET TO BOOM close its operations in Australia and last month about 400 Holden workers took voluntary redundancy.

But the Grattan report, titled The Mining Boom: Impacts and Prospects, paints an optimistic picture for the future of Australian industry.

The report notes that overall, the mining boom has been good for Australia.

“It helped the country weather the global financial crisis. It helped fund major government initiatives. Most Australians have prospered.”

Fears that the boom has benefited mining states, companies and workers, but left the rest of the country worse off, the report says. And fears that the high dollar has caused permanent damage to tradeexposed industries such as manufacturing, tourism and international education are also wide of the mark.

“Benefits have been spread across the country as the boom helped to offset the impacts of globalisation and technological change on lower-skilled workers, the report says.

“The boom has made life difficult for industries that compete internationally.

Yet history suggests that manufacturing and other trade-exposed industries will bounce back quickly after the boom.”

Australian manufacturing constitutes about 8 per cent of the economy and employs more than 950,000.

The Grattan report cites 13 examples between 1980 and 2011 “in countries comparable to Australia” in which the real exchange rate rose significantly and then fell rapidly.

In these countries, manufacturing and total exports typically hardly grew as a share of GDP in the years of high exchange rates. But within a year of a large depreciation, manufacturing and services exports usually grew rapidly. Within three years, manufacturing exports as a share of GDP had risen by more than a third on average.

ABB STRENGTHENS ITS MARKET SHARE ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, has strengthened its market leader position in low-voltage motors and continues to grow faster than the market, according to a new report.

The report, from information and analytics provider IHS, entitled The World Market for Low Voltage Motors 2013 Edition, predicts the market for low-voltage motors will grow to more than $23 billion by 2017. This is driven by regulatory requirements that stipulate higher motor efficiencies.

Last year the market size was $14.6 billion, with more than 48 million units shipped, and ABB's market share rose 1 percentage point to 14 percent, according to IHS. Since the acquisition of Baldor in 2011, when it became market leader, ABB has improved its market position by continuous investments in the development of high-efficiency motors and improvements in customer service.

Over the last two years ABB increased

its sales of low-voltage motors by more than 26 percent.

“The strengthening of our market position reflects the successful integration of Baldor in our total offering,” says Ulrich Spiesshofer, head of ABB’s Discrete Automation and Motion division. “We are now realising the synergies that were created by this deal.”

Recently ABB introduced so-called synchronous reluctance motors that can achieve IE4 levels of efficiency without the use of permanent magnets.

Compared with an IE2 motor, the energy losses are reduced by up to 40 percent.

“ABB has a strong value proposition and I am happy to see that so many customers appreciate that.” says Robert Larsson, manager of ABB’s business unit Motors and Generators.

NEW HEIGHTS: AUSSIE DELEGATION VISITS TEREX IN GERMANY A high-ranking Australian business delegation has completed a recent fact-finding trip to Germany with a visit to Terex Material Handling’s major production facility.

Representatives from major companies at Newcastle, north of Sydney and from the University of Newcastle gathered detailed information about successful German business models.

There was great interest in gaining insights into the predominant conditions influencing Germany as a business location and, at the same time, learning about best practice examples from production.

Terex Corporation is one of the world’s leading suppliers of crane technology, with Demag industrial cranes and crane components.

The inspection of its Material Handling complex at Wetter, Germany, was organised by the Australian regional subsidiary of Terex Material Handling.

In a presentation to the Australian delegates, Dr Lars Brzoska, Vice President & Managing Director of Terex Material Handling said: “As mechanical engineers, we have always focused on the subject of safety.

“With the incorporation of the Material Handling business group into the Terex Corporation, the theme of product safety and occupational health and safety has gained further weight and is now even more firmly anchored in our corporate philosophy.”

Dr Brzoska also addressed the development of the emerging markets in Asia.

“In China we have a large distribution and dealer network for Demag products.

They also enquired about general working and economic conditions in Germany, as well as co-determination in the company and the implementation of projects in ongoing production processes.

SHOULD AUSTRALIA’S MANUFACTURING FUTURE BE NUCLEAR?

It is not the first time in Australia’s economic history that a prevalent sector reaches its peak and gives way to a rapidly developing new one.

However, while the mining and education sectors have apparently hit their peaks and manufacturing continues its decline (as seen by the planned withdrawal of Ford in 2016), there seems to be no replacement underway.

There is another possibility – albeit a controversial one.

Could – and should – Australia embrace the manufacture of nuclear fuel?

More specifically, could the fabrication of nuclear fuel elements or fuel rods used in nuclear power generation plants, replace our current export of uranium oxide concentrate – so-called “yellowcake”?

Australia exports nuclear fuel anyway. It is just the matter of doing it smarter and safer, adding more value to Australia’s product before it leaves our shores, while creating more jobs for Australians and making the world more secure.

What is the reason Australia has not done this so far?

Firstly, the countries capable of exporting fuel elements, such as France, historically started their fuel element fabrication industries intending to generate nuclear-based energy for themselves.

Having abundant and easy to mine coal deposits, Australia did not have to bother about the nuclear industry. Secondly and more importantly, the nuclear industry is strictly (and rightfully) regulated. Even mining

uranium ore is a very controversial and politically charged matter.

To start producing fuel elements, a company must lobby federal and state governments; while for governments a huge task would be to face hostile antinuclear public opinion. Therefore, a vision and leadership is needed from the governments' side to support any commercial interest in this industry.

Potential market capacity Most of the yellowcake used for power generation worldwide is produced by 17 nations. Australia is the third largest producer after Kazakhstan and Canada and meets about 20 percent of the world demand.

Of the producers – Canada, the United States, Germany and France – Australia is the only developed nation producing yellowcake that does not fabricate fuel rods. However, Germany and France produce only miniscule amounts of yellowcake and import considerable amounts of it for their domestic production of rods.

Among growing energy markets, the largest – in absolute terms – potential growth of nuclear energy sectors is expected in India and China.

The World Nuclear Organisation predicts – for China alone – five-fold increase to 58 GWe (Gigawatt) by 2020, to 200GWe by 2030, and to 400 GWe by 2050.

To put this numbers into perspective, each existing or new nuclear-powered generation facility is or will use

approximately 27 tons of the material – ready for nuclear fuel rods – per year per each 1 GWe of generation capacity, which – in current prices – is transformed into at least $40 million per year per 1 GWe of the yearly generation capacity.

Both China and India, currently have very small uranium mining and fuel rod industries compared to their current and future demand. Both are resource-hungry and would consider increasing imports of either yellowcake, or fuel elements, or both. Therefore, the growing market demand can be met by developing Australia’s own fuel element manufacturing industry.

So then, if established in Australia, to what extend would this industry be sustainable? Unlike yellowcake, fuel elements are normally fabricated to particular specifications of generation plants. Therefore, once established, producer-customer links are potentially for the life time of the generation facilities.

Adding value and employment The nuclear fuel element fabrication industry is capital, skill, and knowledge-intensive. It might add considerable value to the Australian export of nuclear fuel. It might help better utilising this country’s comparative advantage of abundant uranium deposits (up to 40 percent of known deposits in the world).

There are several stages of the very sophisticated process of nuclear fuel elements fabrication.

All the stages require huge investments in industrial design, construction and equipment. This can be a boost for the building and engineering sectors with flow-on effects on research and development, education, training and other services and on the overall economy.

This will boost the employment of the very extensive building stage and will maintain jobs at the fuel element fabrication stage.

Safety Many Australians have developed an “allergy” to the very idea of the nuclear industry in this country. There are different schools of thoughts. Some people don’t believe this industry can be safe at all, remembering well-known nuclear catastrophes in the former and the most recent one in Japan.

Others refer to the positive experience of such countries as France, Germany, Finland and Sweden and believe that the nuclear industry is cleaner and safer than any fossil fuel-based one.

Meanwhile, the general public is not very aware that mining uranium ore and the fabrication of nuclear fuel elements – from the relatively simple stage of yellowcake to the very sophisticated stage of fuel rod manufacturing – is the safest part of the nuclear energy technology with a relatively low radioactivity of materials. The major nuclear disasters have actually happened at the power generation plants; while the nuclear energy industry learns a lot from every disaster and develops considerably more advanced safety technologies and procedures.

Importantly, the mass of the nuclear fuel enriched for and locked in fuel elements is about 25 percent of the mass of the yellowcake used. Therefore, the logistics of transporting new (unused) fuel rods is cheaper and safer than of current operations with yellowcake.

International security One of the concerns related to the nuclear energy is a possibility of proliferation of nuclear weapons. Once imported, yellowcake can be potentially used for both

power generation and nuclear bomb manufacturing. The processes of transforming yellowcake into a weapongrade material can be concealed. That is why, each new country willing to import nuclear materials and start their nuclear energy industry should be a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

However, international control is still needed, but cannot be always effective.

Meanwhile, custom-made fuel elements cannot be so easily diverted to weapon manufacturing and delivering rods to designated power generation plants can be more effectively controlled.

Furthermore, converting the yellowcake export into the fuel elements one, considering this country’s potential power in this market, can give Australia a strong argument for replacing (where possible) the international movement of yellowcake with custom-made fuel elements.

Establishing this new industry in Australia would need the Federal and state governments working

together with the industry and the public. The governments need to reconsider the licensing regime.

And it is important the public realistically weigh the risks against its potential benefits. Utilising this country’s comparative advantage is imperative in maintaining the high living standards Australians have become used to.

And the argument is there that the potential new industry is sufficiently safe.

Perhaps the time has come for Australians to reconsider their nuclear stance.

HOW NUCLEAR FUEL IS MADE: THE BENEFITS AND DANGERS • T he nuclear fuel cycle is the series of industrial processes that involve the production of electricity from uranium in nuclear power reactors.

• Uranium is a relatively common element that is found throughout the world.

• It is mined in a number of countries and must be processed before it can be used as fuel for a nuclear reactor.

• Fuel removed from a reactor, after it has reached the end of its useful life, can be reprocessed to produce new fuel.

Nuclear fuel can refer to the fuel itself, or to physical objects (for example bundles composed of fuel rods) composed of the fuel material, mixed with structural, neutron moderating, or neutron reflecting materials.

Nuclear power plants use the heat generated from nuclear fission in a contained environment to convert water to steam, which powers generators to produce electricity. Nuclear power plants now operate in most US states, producing about 20 percent of the nation’s power.

Nearly three million Americans live within 16km of an operating nuclear power plant.

The various activities associated with the production of electricity from nuclear reactions are referred to collectively as the nuclear fuel cycle.

The nuclear fuel cycle starts with the mining of uranium and ends with the disposal of nuclear waste.

With the reprocessing of used fuel as an option for nuclear energy, the stages form a true cycle.

To prepare uranium for use in a nuclear reactor, it undergoes the steps of mining and milling, conversion, enrichment and fuel fabrication. These steps make up the “front end” of the nuclear fuel cycle.

After uranium has spent about three years in a reactor to produce electricity, the used fuel may undergo a further series of steps including temporary storage, reprocessing, and recycling before wastes are disposed. Collectively these steps are known as the “back end” of the fuel cycle.

Though the construction and operation of Nuclear Power Plants are closely monitored and regulated, accidents are possible.

As the nuclear disasters at Chernobyl, Russia and more recently at Fukushima, Japan, nuclear plants have shown – nuclear is never safe.

The potential danger from an accident at a nuclear power plant is exposure to radiation. This exposure could come from the release of radioactive material from the plant into the environment, usually characterized by a plume (cloud-like formation) of radioactive gases and particles.

Radiation has a cumulative effect. The longer a person is exposed to radiation, the greater the effect.

A high exposure to radiation can cause serious illness or death.

Critics claim nuclear fuel production is dangerous, dirty and does not help to solve the problem of climate change.

Also, nuclear power risks a proliferation of nuclear weapons.

And there is no effective solution to deal with the lethal high-level radioactive waste generated.

MANUFACTURERS MAKING SWITCH TO SOLAR POWER A leading Victorian based fibre-drum packaging and manufacturing company has made the switch to solar power to help control manufacturing costs.

George Panek, Managing Director of Multipac Systems, said installing a solar system was in response to rising electricity costs. The company has taken advantage of the abundant sunlight at its manufacturing plant at Echuca in regional Victoria cut its energy bills.

“Energy costs have increased exponentially when compared to CPI in recent years, said Mr Panek. “Switching to solar power provided a way to manage our power bills and stabilise manufacturing costs.

“Installing a 45 kilowatt solar technology to power our regional manufacturing plant made sense, due to Echuca experiencing some of the highest number of sunlight hours in Australia.”

Mr Panek gets a sense of pride when driving up the road towards the factory and sees 225 solar panels, all generating power from the sun.

“With reduced power costs at a time when the price of energy is rising, Multipac Systems now has more certainty in relation to costs, which is also advantageous for our customers,” he said.

According to recent research, Multipac System's approach is robust.

Over the past three years the cost of electricity has risen by around 40 per cent nationally. *Not surprisingly, based on press from peak energy bodies, commercial solar power is at the beginning of a steep growth curve in Australia.

With the volatility of electricity costs impacting commercial businesses, a solar installation makes sense.

Companies like Multipac Systems are improving their economic and environmental viability.

Businesses looking to change to solar energy should do their research, Mr Panek suggests.

“Long-term durability and a quality build are essential," he says.

Almost 200,000 Australian jobs could be lost and up to $28 billion in economic value wiped out, unless manufacturers get access to cheaper natural gas, a new report has warned.

A coalition of Australia's largest manufacturers has urged federal and state governments to intervene to ensure competitively priced gas remains available to Australian manufacturers.

A new analysis released by Manufacturing Australia warns that a gas supply crisis is about to hit Australia’s East Coast because gas currently devoted to domestic manufacturing is being diverted to export.

This means Australians will have to pay one of the world’s highest gas prices despite having one of the world’s largest supplies, the report finds.

Natural gas is essential to many manufacturing industries, making up 1540 percent of the cost base of common products like fertiliser, alumina, cement, bricks and roof tiles.

The chairman of Manufacturing Australia, ex-Pacific Brands chief Sue Morphet, said: "We need the Government to intervene because we need to ensure that there is good, competitively-priced natural gas available in the quantities that we need.

“Otherwise, there could be almost 200,000 Australian jobs that could go over the next five years."

Ms Morphet said there could be a loss of 12 per cent of the manufacturing value-add. This is significant because the value-add of manufacturing is about $160 billion.

“We could lose up to $28 billion a year," she said.

And job losses would be spread across a broad range of energy intensive manufacturing activities. This would include agriculture (fertiliser production), aluminium, construction, glass products, bricks and paper.

“They'll all lose jobs," Ms Morphet warned.

Manufacturing Australia says the report estimates that half the jobs to be lost would be in manufacturing, while the other half would be in other sectors that will suffer from flow on impacts.

"We believe that there's about 9 per cent of direct employees, plus their add-on, which has been the big deal with Ford over the last week.

It's not just the Ford jobs that go, there's all the add-on jobs," Sue Morphet explained.

"We believe that there will be double the number of jobs in total.

So there's the 100,000 manufacturing jobs, and then there'll be the 100,000 add-on jobs."

Ms Morphet said that if Australian manufacturing was to be competitive and sustainable over the long term we need to review and rethink the way that the sector is supported.

“Rather than asking what the cost of intervention is, governments should be asking what is the cost to the nation of doing nothing,” Ms Morphet said.

Ms Morphet said there were several options available to Governments to strike a balance between exports and domestic value adding to gas.

These include introducing a National Interest Test for export such as in Canada, ‘use it or lose it’ provisions, reserving a small percentage of gas for domestic market use such as in Western Australia or other arrangements such as royalty arrangements or tax incentives.

She said such measures existed in other gas exporting countries without deterring investment in gas exports, and delivered a return to the nation much greater than Australia’s reckless policy of unfettered exports.

“The bottom line is that intervention

by State and Federal governments is urgent and necessary, before our energy advantage is sent offshore permanently.”

Many industries require surface measurements and laser camera combination technology can help.

A camera detects a laser line projected onto an object, and then a triangulation calculation determines height and width.

Many industries have applications that require smooth, sealed surfaces without gaps, ruts, or protrusions.

These industries include glass, metal processing, plastics, tire, automotive, aerospace, and even highway road construction. When it comes to meeting the needs of these different industries, quality checks and process control based on measurement play a vital role.

In the past, lasers, mechanical measuring devices, and even wedges were

used to check quality, but usually just as a spot check.

Depending on the application, 100 percent inspection was too slow and required a large capital investment.

A profile scanner, for example, has historically been very expensive and the units being scanned generally didn’t have an interface to decipher all the analog data produced by the scanner. Generally, a self-developed interface and HMI were required and the cost went up. If a company then wanted to capture the data and chart it for process control purposes, database development became necessary.

Many companies are being asked to invest in ensuring the quality of the products they are producing. For example,

the automotive industry is under the watchful eye of the consumer. Consumers expect each body panel on a vehicle to line up flush with the body panel next to it. Gap and flush measurement for quality control can take place while the body panels are placed onto the vehicle, or as a spot check on each vehicle.

Consumers don’t want leaking sunroofs, glass panoramic roofs, or windshields. Leak protection depends on measuring the glue bead being applied for thickness.

The good news is that the demand for quality control measurement has sparked a whole new set of technologies entering the market at reasonable prices.

Some laser systems now use a camera in combination with a laser for on-the-fly

measurement at .01 mm. Some offerings use a simple browser for system setup; others have computer software that sets up a server or PC with a humanmachine interface (HMI) and databases ready to go.

He is looking forward to the challenges that lie ahead with Nilfisk.

“It’s all about taking the company to the next level, he says. “It’s about accelerating growth and increasing brand awareness in the marketplace.”

And he has certainly hit the ground running. In the first two weeks on the job he visited Nilfisk offices in Melbourne, Brisbane and New Zealand, with further trips planned for Perth and Adelaide.

One of his first tasks has been to meet and greet key members of Nilfisk’s high performance team.

“My focus in the short term is to get to know our people and get to know our customers and our service offerings.”

Mr Athanas is keen to “unite and motivate” his team members. A competent, motivated, highly trained team is the key to future growth, he believes.

The main reasons for the company’s outstanding success?

“Its people and its innovation,” he says without hesitation. “Without people we don’t have a business and without innovative products and services we cannot provide solutions to our customers’ needs.”

One of Mr Athanas’ main goals is to maintain and improve customer service.

“We have always had a strong focus on our customers … we are very customer driven,” he says.

Nilfisk also prides itself on its vast product range – the driving force of its business.

Mr Athanas says the company will continue to roll out new and innovative products to complement its existing range.

“This not only includes our product offering, but also our service offering.”

QLD SAFETY SHOW ENDS ON A HIGH

Organisers reported bumper crowds and positive exhibitor feedback at the Queensland Safety Show and CleanScene exhibition in Brisbane earlier this year.

They say the innovation demonstrated by the hundreds of exhibitors during the 3-day show indicated an increase in focus to advance workplace safety and materials handling technologies.

A highlight of the show was a display of unique hand trolleys by Bailey Hand Trucks.

The hand trolleys recently won a Workplace Health and Safety Innovation Award from the Queensland Government Department of Industrial Relations.

The trolleys feature a pivoting easy tilt axle, reducing the effort required to tilt a loaded hand trolley rearward by an amazing 60 percent.

Simply due to a change in the centre of gravity, a load of 300kg feels equal to a load of only 120kg.

The 45-minute seminars gave visitors some practical advice and solutions to them work toward a safer, more efficient workplace.

Other speakers included Workplace Access & Safety fall prevention specialist Brenton Hampson, who presented a talk on planning and funding investments in safety.

Cristian Sylvestere from Safestart gave attendees some useful tips on “How to build a safety culture from the bottom up.”

He presented a behavioural framework that will change the way management thinks about OHS. The National Cleaning & Hygiene Expo and Advanced Logistics and Materials Handling shows held in conjunction with the Qld Safety Show also attracted large crowds.

It was the first time Cleanscene had been held in Brisbane, giving locals access to hundreds of innovative products and services.

Stuart Nichol, President of the National Cleaning Suppliers Association of Australia, said the cleaning and hygiene industry would benefit greatly by holding the show in Brisbane.

SAFETY IN ACTION SHOW HEADS TO DARWIN Safety In Action is spreading its wings to the Northern Territory, with shows planned for Darwin every four years.

Organisers Informa Exhibitions Australia (formerly AEC) announced the move as part of a name change and major revamp of safety show schedules.

The rescheduling follows feedback from visitors and exhibitors.

And from next year, all safety shows across Australia will be re-branded.

Known formerly as the QLD Safety Show, the WA Safety Show and The Safety Show Sydney, they will now come under the Safety in Action umbrella.

The new two-day regional show in Darwin will be held at the Darwin Convention Centre, Darwin from March 19-20.

Tony Francis, Exhibition Director of Safety in Action Australia-wide, says the expansion of the trade show to Darwin was driven by an increase in demand for an event in the Northern Territory.

“The whole thing was driven by the industry there. We had companies based out in Darwin wanting to be a part of the trade shows, he says.

“Darwin is a booming economy and we’ve received support from the Northern Territory government and NT Worksafe to go ahead and launch a Safety in Action event in 2014. Already we’ve received so much interest from companies wanting to be a part of the show.”

Scheduling changes would allow visitors and exhibitors nationally to get the most out of the exhibition.

Visitors registered to attend Safety In Action in their city will have access to any co-located events happening alongside the show.

This year, visitors to the Queensland Safety Show also had access to the Advanced Logistics & Materials Handling and CleanScene shows.

This meant they could network with industry specialists and inspect the latest safety-related products and services.

Safety In Action is a highlight on the Australian Safety industry calendar.

It began in Melbourne and has since spread to QLD, NSW and WA under different names such as Queensland Safety Show and The Safety Show Sydney.

Under the new schedule, one major three-day show will run in September each year, alternating between Sydney and Melbourne.

This follows the successful model of the Queensland and WA shows, which feature 2-day shows in Perth and Brisbane held in June and April across alternating years.

The next Informa safety show will be held at Sydney Showground, Sydney Olympic Park, Sydney from September 3-5.

STRATASYS CHANGES THE FACE OF MANUFACTURING Late last year two giants in 3D printing, Stratasys Inc and Objet Ltd, merged to change the global 3D printing landscape.

Stratasys now boasts a massive portfolio of 3D printing and direct digital manufacturing solutions for the Asia-Pacific region. In this exclusive interview with Industry Update, Jonathan Jaglom, Stratasys General Manager of Asia Pacific and Japan, discusses the benefits of 3D printing and explains why Australian manufacturers should embrace this revolutionary technology …

Jonathan Jaglom’s overwhelming passion for three-dimensional (3D) printing is infectious.

“I fell in love with the product from the first time I saw it, says Jaglom, the driving force behind Stratasys in the AsiaPacific region.

Jaglom says a 3D printer gives manufacturers the ability to print and use parts as well as the ability to print durable jigs and fixtures.

“This is a very rapidly growing space,” he says.

In manufacturing, a 3D printer is ideal for any business that produces tools.

US President Barack Obama helped to dramatically raise the level of global awareness when he delivered his State of the Union address earlier this year.

Obama told the world: “3D printing has the potential to revolutionise the way we make almost everything.”

“So slowly people are becoming more familiar with what 3D printing can provide, Jaglom says. “They are also becoming more familiar on why it is useful.”

Stratasys continues to grow at a frantic pace. The company recently signed a merger agreement with Makerbot, a global leader in desktop 3D printing.

MakerBot helped develop the desktop 3D printing market and the merger with a subsidiary of Stratasys is expected to drive faster adoption of 3D printing for multiple applications and industries.

When Jaglom first joined Objet in 2005 the company had about 73

employees. Today it employs more than 1,100.

“That is massive growth,” he says.

“And we are continuing to grow at an extremely fast pace.”

Jaglom says the company’s biggest challenge is to continually change and adapt to rapidly changing business environments.

3D printing has come a long way since its launch some 30 years ago.

“In recent years there has been a complete switch in the ease of use, says Jaglom.

“Previously you needed an engineering degree to develop a CAD drawing.

“Today that has changed.

“You still need a degree to design a product, but now you can get software that allows ordinary people to manipulate that file and transform it in any way they please.”

Jaglom says companies based in the Asia-Pacific region, including Australia, will reap the benefits of the Stratasys-Object merger.

“Stratasys now offers a very wide range of solutions that did not exist prior to the merge. We now have more resources in the Asia-Pacific region to serve customers.”

The end result will be improved customer service and more effective company training.

While Asia is its fastest growing region,

Stratasys is keen to grow its presence in Australia.

Tasman and Objective 3D are now the main distributors for Stratasys products in Australia.

Stratasys has its sights firmly set on the manufacturing and mining industries in Australia.

And future growth is expected to come from the aerospace, medical and education sectors.

“Basically, if you design products, you should have a 3D printer,” says Jaglom.

The technology can deliver manufacturers “speed, creativity and confidentiality.”

“This means a manufacturer can get a new product to market much faster and more cost effectively than ever before.

“Flaws can be detected at an early stage, so the cost of error is significantly reduced.

“And 3D printing gives manufacturers scope to be far more creative.

“It also means confidentiality as designs and test models remain in-house, with no need to work with an external supplier.

“This technology can give manufacturers a tremendous competitive advantage.”

Jaglom says “forward thinking” companies have been quick to embrace the new technology.

“The more innovative a company is, the more likely they are to use a 3D printer.”

3 D PRINTING RUNS RED HOT FOR FIRE INDUSTRY One of the world’s largest fire truck outfitters is literally using additive manufacturing and 3D printing techniques day and night to produce prototypes and parts to service the fire appliances market. The Stratasys Fortus 250mc 3D production system supplied by 3D printing specialist Tasman Machinery has allowed the NZ-based company to shorten lead times from many months to a matter of days …

Fraser Engineering, based in Wellington, NZ, is one of the largest machining shops in the country.

The company provides design and machining services for a range of local industries that vary from architecture to switching gear. The company prides itself as a low volume and prototyping specialist.

In recent years, Fraser Engineering has moved into the fire truck and appliances industry with the acquisition of a business specialising in the field. The company now creates fully equipped fire trucks from the base chassis to suit a range of environments in New Zealand, Australia and neighbouring Pacific countries.

“All the components for the fire trucks are fitted in-house,” explains Martin Simpson, General Manager of Fraser Engineering. “We like to maintain control over the whole build, to ensure that our design is to specification. As a result of the various tools, parts and components that are made, it makes Fraser Engineering one of the largest in-house fire truck builders in the world.”

In order to be competitive, it is important that Fraser Engineering can turn around design and build in a short period of time – speed to market is a key priority for the company. To facilitate the need for speed, Fraser Engineering has turned to additive manufacturing to produce parts and prototypes.

The Stratasys Fortus 250mc supplied by 3D printer specialist Tasman Machinery has allowed Fraser Engineering to shorten lead times from many months to a matter of days.

“In the past, we would use a full range of CNC machines – lathes, turret punches, pressbrakes – to produce parts and prototypes, but with the Fortus 250mc 3D production system, we can now have something ready in a matter of days.

We can potentially go to testing stage overnight if we need. It is a much more cost-effective and efficient method of producing prototypes,” says Mr Simpson.

Fire trucks have a surprisingly large number of plastic components, such as components for the roller doors.

Currently, Fraser Engineering is using the Fortus 250mc to produce parts for the roller doors at as many as 100 units per day, with the machine often running overnight. “In the past, the part would have been produced using an injection mould,” Mr Simpson explains. “With injection moulding we would need to create the tool which can take a few months and many thousands of dollars. If the design should change then we would throw the tool away and start again. With the Fortus 250mc we can change the design very quickly and easily. Once the design is finalised and proven, then injection moulding can take over producing the larger volumes of the parts.”

The Fortus 3D production system has given Fraser Engineering the flexibility to produce parts to suit the vast range of specifications that cannot be produced using traditional machining processes.

With an accuracy of 0.178mm, it has enabled Fraser to produce complex designs including delicate threads.

APPRENTICESHIP NUMBERS ARE ‘FLAT-LINING’ The Australian Industry Group has called for the establishment of a National Apprenticeship Commission to help boost apprenticeship levels.

Ai Group Chief Executive, Innes Willox, said the commission should develop apprenticeship arrangements for current and emerging industries and occupations in conjunction with industry skills councils.

“The Commission must have the power to make apprenticeship policy that is binding on all jurisdictions,” Mr Willox said.

The proposal follows the recent release of a AiGroup report that indicates a “flatlining” of apprentice numbers.

The report Apprenticeships: Achieving Excellence found that more than 60 per cent of companies surveyed intend to maintain their apprentices and not hire additional apprentices.

This reflected current uncertainty about the economy.

Mr Willox said the apprenticeship system is also under strain due to a number of structural challenges.

This includes national inconsistency, poor completion rates, persistence of time-served rather than competencybased approaches to delivery and the future application of the pathway in an increasingly knowledge-based economy.

"The lack of a genuine national system is a major frustration to employers, especially those that operate on a national basis or in multiple states, he said. “There needs to be national consistency.”

A National Apprenticeship Commission would help solve these problems, he said.

Mr Willox said one of the major challenges is the long term drift away in focus from employers and apprentices, to the training provider.

According to the report technicians and trades workers represent the most significant skills shortage (33 percent).

And 41 percent of employers reported significant difficulty recruiting ‘technicians and trade workers’ with STEM skills.

Also, respondents expressed concern about school’s preparation of students for apprenticeships.

The report indicates 30 percent of businesses are dissatisfied with the numeracy skills and 29 percent are dissatisfied with basic literacy and the use of English of school-leavers.

Mr Willox said all of these business concerns affect the future growth and health of the apprenticeship system.

"The skills developed and nurtured within an apprenticeship become the essential and highly-valued, trade, technical and business skills that underpin a very sizeable part of our productive economy, said Mr Willox. “We need to be doing more as a country lift these

A key recommendation in the report is to reverse this trend and empower the core relationship between employers and apprentices.

“This would be best served by establishing the employer as the primary customer of the Registered Training Organisations (RTO) rather than the funding authority,” Mr Willox said.

“It is time to iron out these difficulties and refocus on the essence of an apprenticeship arrangement.”

NEW CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE OPENS IN QUEENSLAND FOR POLYETHYLENE WELDERS SkillsTech Australia in partnership with industry has opened a new training centre for polyethylene welders in Queensland.

The High Density Polyethylene (HDPE /PE100) Centre of Excellence at Acacia Ridge will provide students with skills needed to work in the mining and construction sectors.

SkillsTech Australia Business Manager John Mahony says the centre is another great example of the TAFE institute working with industry to provide training specific to their needs.

“This centre has been established in partnership with training organisation Polymer Fusion Technology (PFT) to train HDPE welders to benchmark industry standard and Australian best practice,” Mr Mahony said.

“Our world-class facilities, tradequalified teachers and up-to-date industry equipment result in skills that will provide opportunities to Queenslanders to work in the mining and construction sectors.

“With industry support from manufacturers Iplex Pipelines and Georg

Fischer, we are creating skills today for Queensland’s future.”

Iplex National Infrastructure Manager Michael Doyle said combining industry knowledge with the established training capability of Skills Tech Australia and PFT would help meet demand for skilled labourers.

“Together, we have established this training centre to cater not only for the industry’s demand for more of this type of training, but more importantly to develop a multi-level course structure over a period

of time,” Mr Doyle said.

“This structure will allow our industry clients the opportunity to access a program that allows the trainee to progressively gain multiple levels of accreditation.

“Each level of accreditation is designed to further increase their knowledge and advance their skill set.”

A new industry group has been formed to focus on the needs of the printing and packaging industry.

The Printing Industry Stakeholder Reference Group (SRG) will work closely with Spectra Training, one of Australia’s largest privately owned training companies.

It will advise Spectra on a wide range of matters relating to the design and delivery of print training solutions.

MPs ‘MUST FOCUS ON TRAINING’ With a federal election looming, the issue of vocational skills and training should be high on the political agenda, says leading apprenticeship training group MIGAS. MIGAS CEO David Brown says all MPs should be supporting group training to help solve Australia’s skill crisis.

A LATHE COMPANY THAT BEGAN IN QUEEN VICTORIA’S REIGN … and is now Europe’s biggest manufacturer of turning machines Visitors to the famous EMO Machine Tools Show (EMO 2013) in Hannover, Germany in September are in for a special treat. The 600 Group will showcase many of its industry-leading machines, including Harrison’s Alpha X Series – the world’s finest CNC combination lathe.

Also displayed were advanced workholding products from Pratt Burnerd International, and taper roller bearings from Gamet Bearings.

Completing the line-up were the Raptor and D-Box fibre laser-marking system from fellow 600 Group company, Electrox; Many of these machines, designed and built with the company’s huge legacy of engineering skills and technology developed since the 1890s, are to be demonstrated at EMO 2013, the world’s biggest exhibition of machine tools.

The mining industry continues to operate at full capacity requiring a demanding workload from the miners and associated businesses.

With lead times being crucial, Perth-based Ox Engineering felt it was time to look for a solution to alleviate the pressure, minimise lead times and bring outsourced plasma cutting work in-house.

Ox Engineering is a specialist company based in Perth, WA, providing products, parts, repairs and service for the drilling and exploration sector.

The company supplies customdesigned products to suit the different types of drill rigs used in exploration – some examples are: dual rotary water well rigs, large oil and gas rigs, diamond drill rigs and reverse circulation.

All of these drill rigs require different products for sampling, maintenance and safety; handrails, platforms for personnel and auto mobilising specialised equipment to take manual handling down to a minimum.

With demand for exploration high to find the next mineral source, drill rigs are put through their paces, requiring many spare parts, rebuilds or retrofits to keep them commissioned.

In order to manufacture those parts, designs are generated using 3D CAD software and then outsourced to specialist companies for cutting.

Given the robust outlook for mining, Heath Oxley, manager of Ox Engineering, felt it was time to buy a CNC plasma cutting machine and bring the plate cutting in-house.

He decided to choose the HACO Group. With other products such as pressbrakes, turret punchers and rollers, Oxley felt that the company was experienced in the type of machinery he

was after and would also offer excellent support.

As a result, Oxley chose a KOMPAKT 4020 CNC plasma cutting machine from HACO Australia.

The KOMPAKT 4020 boasts a cutting table of 4000mm x 2000mm and a positioning accuracy of ± 0.1mm and Hypertherm’s patented HyDefinition plasma cutting system.

The machine is more than capable of cutting materials of up to 32mm of mild steel and happily copes with stainless and tempered high-tensile steel.

To ensure optimum cutting accuracy and speed, the gantry of the KOMPAKT rests on over-sized linear guides and is driven on both sides by brushless AC Servo motors and rackand-pinion systems.

Two over-sized linear guides are mounted on the gantry itself for accurate Y-movement of the cutting head rest. The X-axis is also controlled by a brushless AC Servo motor with rackand-pinion system. The touch screen control panel is intuitive and allowed the team at Ox Engineering straightforward control of the cutter with minimal training. It also provides the user with information on consumable lifecycles to minimise wastage and downtime.

“Previously, our lead times were too long; by the time the drawing was finalised and then outsourced for cutting we could potentially have lost 3-4 weeks. Now, with our own plasma cutter, once the drawing is complete, it can be cut in an hour. It has cut our turnaround time to a tenth of what it was,” says Oxley.

SEVAAN EXPANDS TO MEET GROWING DEMAND Sevaan Group is growing the technical capability of its production plant to cope with growing demand.

The company has taken delivery of two new machines – a high-tech milling machine and a large press.

QUICK RETURN: CNC PLASMA CUTTER A GREAT INVESTMENT Progress Air based in western Sydney makes sheetmetal parts for airconditioning systems, servicing the local HVAC&R industry for more than 16 years.

Several years ago, Progress Air began preparations for the future of sheetmetal processing, as the industry became more competitive and customers demanded quick turnaround.

After careful investigations and evaluating various CNC plasma cutting systems, the company decided to install an ART CNCXRP4800 plasma cutter in June 2012.

The plasma cutting process is bestknown for its simplicity and its ability to cut virtually any metal. These qualities plus the productivity it yields had convinced company Director Rod Peters that it would be the right choice, and he was not disappointed.

“Our production levels have gone through the roof now, it’s incredible,” he says.

Also, the company has cut its monthly material expenses by more than half.

This is mainly due to the nesting function, which leverages the mathematical processing power of the PC to optimise material usage and reduce cost.

The company processes mild steel, galvanised steel, aluminium and stainless steel and is wrapped with the thickness the machine manages to cut (up to 20mm in mild steel).

While Mr Peters is very happy with the CamDuct software he is using, he is also considering investing in higher-level nesting software, such as ART’s in-house developed ToolShop software.

While optimising material use still is a critical task, nesting software can play additional roles in three other areas – integration, automation, and part quality.

For example, nesting software can work easily with all standard 2D and 3D CAD formats.

It can also link to a central material inventory and work order database, create highly optimised nests of all materials and thicknesses within a single job and cut better parts.

ART machines are manufactured, sold and serviced in Australia by local people.

“We looked at Chinese and Americanmade machines ... but if something goes wrong, they are 10,000 miles away in a different time zone,” Mr Peters explains. “ART’s machines are serviced from Brisbane and are Australian-made.”

According to Mr Peters, it took as little as six months for the machine to pay for itself – a sound investment for a small workshop. “The only thing I regret is my decision for a small 3-m table,” Mr Peters adds. “Once we move to bigger premises, I will look into a bigger table to process two sheets at once and improve our productivity levels even more.”

HOW PORTABLE CNC TOOLS CAN GIVE YOU A COMPETITIVE EDGE

By David White – director of Advanced Robotic Technology (ART), Brisbane Australia has historically dominated the mining industry, securing a position in the global top five for production of a majority of the world's most important minerals and metals.

Like most industries, Australia's mining sector has not been immune to the effects of the global economic downturn. But Australia's mining boom is not over, says a study commissioned by the Minerals Council of Australia, but its dynamics have changed and its policy demands are greater and more urgent.

The report by the Australian strategy consulting firm, Port Jackson Partners, suggests that over the next 20 years, demand for key minerals will increase by between 50 percent and 200 percent.

While growth in iron ore demand slows as infrastructure is developed, there is likely to be new growth in demand for products such as copper, aluminium and other minerals and metals and consumers demand more sophisticated products.

If Australia can maintain market share through the next two decades, the country's minerals revenue could increase by $121 billion per annum by 2031 – a 65 percent increase for a sector already twice the size it was in 2006, the report suggests.

Remaining at the forefront of system innovation In order for Australia to continue to reign in the market over countries such as the US, South Africa, and Canada, mining executives must remain at the forefront of system innovation and application of emerging technologies.

The Federal Government has recently announced a program to establish ten Industry Innovation Precincts to drive and support the growth and competitiveness

of Australian industries. As a highly significant sector of the Australian economy, the Mining Equipment, Technology and Services (METS) industry is built on innovation, producing technologically advanced, globally competitive products and services for mining companies worldwide.

In order to produce these globally competitive products, the METS industry needs sophisticated and highlyproductive machinery, which is most of the time sourced from overseas. But the success and rapid growth of the Australian mining industry has also relied on domestic innovation and technology developments, and Brisbane-based CNC machinery manufacturer Advanced Robotic Technology (ART) has over the last couple of years developed automated CNC machinery to make companies more productive – in the workshop or on site, where mine operators face the daily challenge of improving productivity while simultaneously reducing costs. FORD ‘DIDN'T UNDERSTAND THE VALUE OF BEING AUSSIE-MADE’ Mr Ian Harrison, Chief Executive of the Australian Made campaign is baffled why the beleaguered Ford motor company has never played the “Aussie-made card.”

Apart from the job losses within Ford and its suppliers, this is the biggest disappointment following the announcement to close its operations in Australia, he says.

Mr Harrison says the announcement is not a reflection on the engineering or build quality of the current models – which are brilliant – it is the marketing of Ford’s Australian-made products. The marketing for the Falcon and the Territory could have been much better.

“A campaign based around its Australian workforce could have had a huge impact,” he said.

“For some time now there has been a growing sense of uncertainty in the community about future job prospects.

“In this type of environment consumers are far more receptive to a campaign focused on the consequences of their shopping decisions. Ford never seemed to grasp this.”

DON’T CHOOSE A NEW PUMP UNTIL YOU’VE READ THIS Choosing which type of pump to use can be a daunting process given the variety of pumping technologies in today’s market.

Careful examination of the all factors involved can help you make the right choice.

The primary consideration must be the pumping application.

Here are the main differences between traditional “sealed” pumps and so-called “seal-less” pumps: The definition of a seal-less pump (The Hydraulic Institute, Parsippany, NJ) is one in which “the impeller shaft is completely contained in a sealed, pressurized vessel (called the containment shell) that contains the process fluid.”

The process fluid is prevented from getting out of the pump by static, rather than dynamic seals. Magnetic drive pumps fall into this category.

In this case, the pump’s drive shaft turns a secondary “driven” shaft, the impeller shaft, by means of a magnetically coupled system.

Sleeve bearings on the driven shaft perform the equivalent function to the dynamic primary seals used in traditional sealed pumps. To choose between a sealed or seal-less pump design, you must understand the

economics involved as well as the technologies used.

SUNNY DAYS AHEAD FOR LENCROW Lencrow Materials Handling has kept on its path of corporate social responsibility by installing a 30kW solar power system to their NSW workshops.

The unit is designed to supply enough power to run the workshop and offices during daylight hours. It also has the capacity to power the charging of battery electric forklifts prior to delivery.

“We looked at ways that we could improve our carbon footprint, says Ross Grassick Managing director of Lencrow.

“We had already looked at offering a larger range of electric powered forklifts and vehicles for sale and hire. This still didn’t create a large enough effect on our own footprint but rather the people we supply to. We then looked at our power consumption and how to reduce it, finding this a hard task, we looked at producing our own power from solar. This system was achievable at a reasonable cost with the added bonus of the system being almost totally invisible.”

The system supplied by Energo employs 120 solar panels that have a 25year warranty and is regulated through two 15kW inverters.

TURCK’S GATEWAY TO SUCCESS TURCK has expanded its BL20 I/O system with a new gateway for serial Modbus communication.

The gateway supports both the Modbus RTU as well as the ASCII protocol. The user can also choose between either RS485 or RS232 for the physical interface.

Push-in terminals for connecting the fieldbus and power supply cables quickly and directly eliminate the need for any time consuming preparation of the typical 9-pin SUB-D connectors.

The most important parameters, such as baud rate, address assignment, bus termination and RS232/RS485 can be set easily on the gateway using the DIP switches. Other functions such as ASCII mode and other baud rates can be configured using FDT/DTM with Pactware. A Mini-USB port can be used as a service interface.

FLIR, a global leader in thermal imaging systems, has released a new range of thermal imaging cameras, equipped with a cooled detector.

The A35x0sc/A65x0sc-Series from FLIR are ideal tools for industrial R&D – especially for those applications that need better image quality, more R sensitivity and a higher frame rate than from a thermal imaging camera with an uncooled detector.

When higher frame rates and better image quality are required scientists can choose among the FLIR X8000 or X6000 series.

The FLIR A35x0sc/A65x0sc-Series cameras all feature Mid-Wave Infrared Cooled detectors.

This means they can see through or at materials that no other uncooled Long-Wave camera can, including certain types of glasses or plastics.

The FLIR A65x0sc produces crisp thermal images of 640x512 pixels. Users that do not need this high image quality for their application can choose the FLIR A3520sc which produces thermal images of 320x256 pixels.

All versions have a high thermal sensitivity of <25 mK which captures the finest image details and temperature difference information. This is only achievable with cryogenically cooled infrared detectors.

External triggering allows synchronization of the image capture to the most

fleeting events. It is also possible to configure one camera to be master and others to be slave for applications requiring more than one camera.

All FLIR A35x0sc/A65x0sc-series cameras work on a snapshot mode: all pixels are registering the thermal event simultaneously. In case of moving objects or on motion applications, such cameras can avoid image blur that would occur if a non-snapshot camera would be used.

The FLIR A35x0sc/A65x0sc cameras work seamlessly together with FLIR ResearchIR/ResearchIR Max. It allows for viewing, recording and advanced processing of the infrared data provided by the camera.

THE SAFER WAY TO PICK ORDERS New to the Australian market, the Powerlift Sprint is ideal for stock picking/ stock replenishment applications.

The Powerlift Sprint is the perfect alternative to either the dangerous and time wasting ladder option or using an expensive order picker to pick light loads at low levels.

It has a platform height of 3.3m, enabling stock to be picked or placed at 5.3m and its material tray has a capacity of 90kg.

With fast travel and lift speeds and intuitive controls, the Sprint will add productivity gains to any operation.

It is particularly beneficial for those operations with inexperienced or temporary staff because it is so simple and safe to operate.

Control of forward and backward movement is proportional and can be controlled simultaneously with the raising and lowering functions without moving the hand.

HOW TO REMOVE POWDER FROM SILOS Powders pack down in a hopper or silo, and the finer the powder, the more difficult it is to remove.

Solimar fluidisers from Kockums Bulk Systems are an easy and cost effective solution to this problem.

They are found in hundreds of applications including difficult to handle products like cement, talcum powder, gypsum, flyash, titanium dioxide, calcium carbonate, carbon black, sugar and flours.

In most cases they are relatively easy to install and the problem is overcome in a couple of hours.

The latest release from Solimar makes the mounting even easier. The fluidiser is installed totally externally, from the underside of the cone.

A 50mm hole is cut in the hopper, and the fluidiser can be shaped to pass through the hole, with the use of a trailing lead to keep the fluidiser captive.

Silo fluidisers promote the discharge of dry products from storage silos, dust collectors, weigh bins and IBC’s.

Solimar fluidisers enable a uniform flow of most dry bulk materials through

aeration and slight hopper wall vibration that helps prevent the common problems of bridging, rat holing and compacting.

A good installation will ensure a regular feed of powder for process work, particularly where a constant flow pattern is desired.
