CUTTING RED TAPE TO HELP REVIVE AUSSIE INDUSTRY Ian Macfarlane MP - Industry AND Science Minister

In 30 years of meeting and working with manufacturers, small business owners and farmers, not once have I heard any one of them praising red tape.

Off course, all recognise that some level of regulation is important to ensure a safe society. However in a country like Australia where there are three levels of government and multiple regulatory bodies, red tape is too often an impediment to productivity.

That’s why our Government is committed to making it easier for businesses to focus on being productive and competitive. We are working consistently to repeal and amend costly and excessive regulation and introduce initiatives that cut red and green tape.

By implementing our regulation reform agenda we will provide savings to business so they can invest their time and resources in R&D, growing their business and building skills.

On Repeal Day on 18 March, we

announced red-tape savings worth nearly $220 million and cut 73 pieces of legislation in the Industry and Science portfolio.

These reforms will result in reduced compliance costs for businesses, community organisations, families and individuals.

Among the initiatives to reduce red tape were streamlining the way businesses interact with Government through the Single Business Service and helping businesses with strategies to grow and become more competitive.

However cutting red tape cannot be seen as a one-off effort – we need to continue to assess our current practice and ensure that future activities don’t add unnecessarily to the red tape burden.

To do this, the Department of Industry and Science will continue to identify possible areas of regulation reform across the portfolio.

It will also help policy makers consider alternative responses to regulation, develop

good quality regulation impact statements and undertake effective consultation with stakeholders.

We are also working with COAG – the Council of Australian Governments – to focus on streamlining regulation that is made and administered by the Commonwealth in partnership with State and Territory Governments, and removing processes that create double-ups between jurisdictions.

In 2014, around one quarter of the portfolio’s regulation was administered through such partnership arrangements.

We are focused on removing regulatory inconsistencies, encouraging mutual recognition and streamlining reporting requirements, where possible.

I’d also like to give you a brief update on progress in our Industry Growth Centre Initiative that has an important role in our push for ongoing deregulation.

The $188.5 million Industry Growth Centres Initiative will boost Australian industry’s international competitiveness and enhance our areas of competitive strength by building new links between businesses and researchers.

As part of their approach to addressing barriers to business success, the Growth Centres will identify opportunities to reduce regulatory burden, feeding into the Government’s deregulatory approach.

The Growth Centres are in key growth sectors: advanced manufacturing; food and agribusiness; medical technologies and pharmaceuticals; mining equipment, technology and services; and oil, gas and energy resources. During the next couple of months work will get underway on the next step – to develop a proposal to put each Growth Centre in place to begin their interaction with Australian business.

TOP HONOUR FOR DR CAROL LAWRENCE

The Australian Institute of Packaging (AIP) has awarded environmental and sustainability specialist Dr Carol Lawrence a Fellowship – the highest recognition to AIP members.

The award recognises the significant and sustained contribution to the technology, science or application to packaging in the industry.

Dr Lawrence’s experience in the label industry spans over 20 years. She started with a technical role at Jac Australia that underpinned the selection of the most appropriate label material for the required application. This role was enhanced by a

background in chemistry, including a PhD in polymer chemistry, gained in the UK. Dr Lawrence has an understanding of adhesive properties combined with developments in the packaging industry that have led to opportunities in marketing and many product innovations as self-adhesive labelling in Australia has grown in capability.

Most recently she has worked with UPM Raflatac on the environmental aspects of self-adhesive labelling, combined with the sustainability of the raw materials used. This involves new raw material selection and waste management programs to enhance the

company’s Biofore portfolio and to develop long term sustainable label solutions.

Mr Ralph Moyle, National President of the AIP, said Dr Lawrence has displayed all the requirements and more to be awarded a Fellow.

“Carol has and continues to share her knowledge and expertise with many in the industry, giving freely and willingly of her time and experiences. Over many years she has ensured that others benefit from that which has learnt, never hesitating to show and educate others so that they too will one day hopefully pass on knowledge,” Mr Moyle said.

The AIP National Board congratulated Dr Lawrence for her significant contribution to the labelling and packaging industries in Australia.

HIGH PRICE TO PAY FOR CUTTING RED TAPE

By Senator Kim Carr - Shadow Minister for Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Industry The Industry Minister, Ian Macfarlane, says that he has cut almost $220 million in redtape costs for business (Industry Update, 24/03/2015).

Feel better now? If the answer is no – and I suspect that will be the instinctive response from most Australian CEOs – it is because the Minister and his colleagues in the Abbott Government have a dubious notion of what constitutes “red tape”.

To most people, “red tape” means something like “unnecessary and burdensome regulation”.

But it’s a vague term, beloved of spin doctors. In this case, the spinners have stretched the meaning of “cutting red tape” so that it is equivalent to “cutting spending” – any spending.

The Industry and Science Portfolio Annual Deregulation Report 2014 itemises the $220 million of alleged red tape that Mr Macfarlane is so proud of having lifted from the backs of Australian businesses.

Nearly a quarter of that sum, $46 million, is the Department of Industry and Science estimate of the annual compliance costs of industry assistance programs the Abbott

Government has shut down.

We’re talking about programs such as Commercialisation Australia, Enterprise Connect and the Textile, Clothing and Footwear Structural Adjustment Program, which were part of the previous Labor government’s 10-year national innovation strategy.

These initiatives fostered investment in innovative products and business practices, and helped Australian firms bring new products to new market.

By what stretch of the imagination can enabling firms to apply for such programs be called red tape?

These programs did not hamper or restrict business in any way. No-one was forced to apply. And those businesses that received support were able to extend their operations and become more competitive.

The red-tape list in the Deregulation Report also includes the Industry Innovation Precincts, which were designed to encourage innovation by forging links between researchers and industry on a sectoral basis.

Under Labor, there were 12 precincts. The Abbott Government has abolished these

and replaced them with five “Industry Growth Centres”.

So by the Minister’s measure a Labor initiative is red tape but a Coalition copy of it is not.

The red tape list has obviously been compiled by people who aren’t fussed about facts. It was out-of-date even by the time the Minister issued his announcement.

Among the closed or closing programs listed is the Automotive Transformation Scheme (ATS), from which the Government had announced cuts of $900 million.

Last month Mr Macfarlane was forced to back down on these cuts. It was obvious even to critics of the car industry among his Cabinet colleagues that curtailing the scheme could send out of business component makers who had made investments based on ATS assistance.This collapse of the supply chain could in turn force the motor vehicle producers to leave Australia before the announced shutdown in 2017.

The Deregulation Report also names the Australian Renewable Energy Agency.

According to the Department of Industry and Science, abolishing the agency will lead

to annual savings in compliance costs of $1.8 million.

The report states that a bill for repeal of the Agency is “before the Senate”. For this read “stalled in the Senate”. The Government doesn’t have the numbers to do what it wants to do, but it has included projected savings from abolition of the Agency on its spurious red-tape list anyway.

The list does include a few items that meet the ordinary definition of removing red tape, such as passage of the Student Identifiers Bill. This allows VET students to use a single number for compiling and accessing their academic records over a lifetime, and really will result in simplified procedures.

But items like this stand out on the list because most of the savings that make up the cobbled together $220 million have nothing to do with red tape.

If the Minister wants to help Australian businesses, he should not be asking his department to produce misleading lists of supposed “red tape”.

He should be trying to persuade his colleagues to restore the industry programs the Abbott Government has abandoned.

Since 2012, Ansell has acquired Trelleborg Protective Products in Sweden; Comasec in France which has production facilities in Portugal and Malaysia; Hands International, a Sri Lanka weaver of yarns; Hércules Equipamentos de Protectção Ltda in Brazil and Midas Co with factories in Korea and Vietnam. The most recent acquisition has been Barrier Safe Solutions in the US. These strategic investments have been designed to give Ansell the control needed to produce high-performance competitive products such as those it is currently releasing.

The first three new styles are now in the market – the HyFlex “7 Series” – and will be followed by several other innovative ultra-lightweight styles, which are due for release this month.

Ansell says it is approaching the challenge of global competition by developing and manufacturing gloves in the most efficient and effective locations, with the same consistent management approach, supported by its ownership of as much of the development and manufacturing chain as possible.

The benefit of such an approach is to remove layers of margin to enable the company to compete with the price-driven house brand competitors, while offering better performing products.

It is also consistent with what is needed to prosper in today’s fast moving

global market, where strategies such as integration with offshore manufacturing should be a consideration of all manufacturers of leading branded products.

A sound business strategy for global suppliers is a commitment to compliance with the relevant standards. Ansell follows this rule rigorously by undertaking independent third-party testing of its products to give customers the assurance that their hand protection is fit for purpose.

PORT MACQUARIE’S BIRDON GROUP MAKING BIG WAVES IN THE US By thinking outside the square, a familyowned marine engineering company based at Port Macquarie in northern NSW is achieving outstanding success on the world stage.

The Birdon Group has come a long way since its humbling beginnings as a small dredging company working out of a leased building on the Hastings River nearly 40 years ago.

The company recently started work on a $US261 million ($A318 million) six-year contract to supply specialty craft to the US Army.

It was the culmination of four years of design, tender submission and prototype trials.

The winning tender is based on a design Birdon developed for a contract a decade ago to supply similar craft to the Australian army.

Birdon CFO Tammy Bugler says innovation and lateral thinking helped to get the company across the line.

“We are lateral thinkers and we encourage our team to look beyond the norm,” she says.

Tammy and her brother Jamie Bruce (Managing Director) now run the company, established by their father, Jim, in 1977.

The company slogan “Make It Happen” says it all.

“Dad originally started the company with the purchase of a single dredge, Ms Bugler recalls. “He used to extract sand from the Hastings River at Port Macquarie.”

He then expanded the company and moved into contract dredging, marine engineering, ship construction and repairs and maintenance. The rest, as they say, is history.

The company’s headquarters is now located on a 6ha site at Port Macquarie with operations in Sydney, Victoria,

Queensland and the US. More recently, it opened a new sales office in the UK. Birdon currently employs about 140 people – 90 in Australia and 50 in the US, based mainly at a new state-of-theart manufacturing facility at Denver, Colorado.

In Australia it operates four main divisions: • Marine • Engineering • Defence • Dredging It is diversification combined with a highly skilled workforce that has contributed to the company’s great success, says Ms Bugler.

“Also, we have great customer relationships, she says. “We try to be responsive to our clients’ needs and do everything to ensure their projects are successfully achieved.

“That’s what sets us apart from our competitors.”

That same success formula helped Birdon land the lucrative US defence deal.

The tender process for US defence contracts is among the most competitive in the world. To win the contract Birdon beat competition from a number of globally recognised defence contractors, including General Dynamics.

Over the next six years Birdon will supply as many as 374 Bridge Erection Boats (BEBs).

The boats are manufactured in the US, with support from Birdon’s Australian team.

Bridge erection boats are used primarily to provide propulsion and manoeuvring thrust while supporting temporary floating bridges when existing bridges have been destroyed during a military conflict.

To be eligible for the tender, Birdon had to have a US base. That base came

after Birdon purchased a group based in Arkansas, known as North American Marine Jet (NAMJet).

NAMJet’s technology proved pivotal to winning the tender. The NAMJet marine propulsion system provides significantly more thrust than other water jets on the market, while maintaining high speeds.

Ms Bugler is confident this technology will open more doors for the company globally.

“Through NAMJet we are developing new military opportunities outside the BEB program. NAMJet was recently awarded a subcontract to repower the Marine Corps Amphibious Assault Vehicle (AAV).”

Ms Bugler says one of the biggest challenges the company (and most other SMEs) has faced is in finding attractive finance.

“Being a privately owned family company it is often difficult to secure finance, particularly for an overseas project,” she says.

Ms Bugler praised the Export Finance and Insurance Corporation (EFIC), Australia's export credit agency, for its support in securing the US contract.

“Efic has been fundamental to us achieving success, she says. “With our

assets based in Australia, it was extremely difficult for us to get US banks on board, as we didn’t have any physical assets in the US. “Our local bankers were extremely supportive, but we needed more security and that’s where Efic came in.

“When the US Government did its due diligence, they placed a lot of faith in the fact that Efic were behind us. That gave them confidence we could deliver on the project.”

Efic was also instrumental in securing a US dollar facility to protect the company against currency fluctuations.

“If we were working in Australian dollars we would now be losing nearly 30 percent (following recent falls against the US dollar),” Ms Bugler said.

So what does the future hold for Birdon?

“We want to maintain sustainable growth in Australia and the US. And we want to remain a family-owned company.

“Hopefully, with the establishment of our new UK office we can extend our international footprint.

“We will continue to focus on our strengths and respond to our customer’s needs to ensure we deliver the best possible product.”

Mr Jon Hawton, Market Manager, Food & Beverage Bulk Gases explains that MAPAX_LD uses hydrogen as the detection gas and detects faulty packages which can be removed from production chain more quickly and easily.

“This globally patented technology uniquely allows 100 percent of packages to be tested in a non-destructive manner which can prolong shelf-life. This is particularly important in the food industry.

Previously production pauses and visual or water testing could only test the integrity of random samples of packages,” said Mr Hawton.

Leakage and failure often occurs when food packages are not all fully hermitically sealed. This can be due to poor sealing or physical damage such as pinholes, or when product gets caught in the seal and can lead to loss of shelf life, damaged products or poor appearance and therefore spoilage.

MAPAX_LD is used on modified atmosphere production lines for a wide range of packaged goods. It allows all products to be tested and individual defective items to be removed. This reduces spoilage and minimises environmental impact, because only the leaking packs need to be destroyed instead of the entire batch.

The Camera/communications interfaces, image processing algorithms, and other features of this complete image processing system are built into one housing.

The FH-series can increase productivity and improve profitability.

Mr Gibb and a team of experts from Omron was on hand to demonstrate the machine’s capabilities and answer industry questions.

“Visitors showed great interest in the new technology which can be used for a variety of applications, particularly for food & beverage and packaging industries.”

Visy Automation is now using Omron’s Delta Robots to replace the manual handling of products at its packaging sites across Australia.

The Omron Sysmac NJ Machine Automation Controller (MAC) is at the core of its system architecture.

Mr Gibb says unlike other systems, the high-speed Atom® based controller can drive up to eight robots.

Many of the AUSPACK exhibitors launched new and innovative solutions, including the Omniverse Group, which displayed its full 3D immersive reality packaging that brings everyday print and packaging to life.

"Omniverse Reality is about to become a very real part of our lives, said CEO Brendan Yee. “With the advent of smart phones product packaging is on the cusp of a digital revolution, Mr Yee said. “The interest shown in the technology over the four days was overwhelming with 600 interested parties registered."

BLUE SKIES AHEAD FOR MANUFACTURERS The plummeting Australian dollar has been welcomed by manufacturers, with many now moving their operations back to Australia.

“The weaker Australian dollar is starting to drive manufacturers back to Australia in a sign the economy is adjusting to a post-mining boom world,” said BlueScope Steel boss Paul O'Malley recently.

“After a very strong trend toward offshoring, we are starting to see some domestic onshoring for the first time in almost six years.”

The fall in the value of the Australian dollar could stimulate the manufacturing sector further in coming months.

This year’s Austech exhibition, with a focus on machine tools for metal cutting and forming, production systems, high-precision tools, CAD/CAM and accessories, seems perfectly timed.

International Machine Tool Show TIMTOS 2015 in March.

Some 46,000 visitors attended the biennial event, which featured 5,411 booths over 100,000sqm.

Representing Australia were the

managing director of 600 Machine Tools, Cliff Purser, and the sales manager for SE Asia, Steve Drummond.

The two Sydneysiders worked alongside Trevor Matthews, a specialised applications engineer from 600 UK Ltd – a 600 Group company.

Visiting from the US was the president of Clausing Industries – a 600 company – Kalamazoo-based Don Heselton, along with Clausing vice president Kevin Mungovan.

The international sales manager of Electrox Jim Leach brought news of the 600-owned company’s February merger with TYKMA of Ohio, US, thereby creating a global market leader in the field of laser marking and engraving.

Steve Smith, the international sales manager of Gamet Bearings – the UK’s largest manufacturer of precision-taper roller-bearings – was on hand to meet current and prospective customers.

Mr Mike Berry, the managing director of 600 UK, also attended. Mr Berry noted it was not only prospective buyers who examined the 600 Group’s large offering.

“I could not help noticing that many

of our competitors made a point of very closely examining the machines we had on display. We take that as tribute to our century-old reputation for industry-leading innovation and design, and excellence in engineering and build-quality,” he said.

“However, I was somewhat surprised when a respected figure in the industry whispered in my ear that, in his view, the Colchester Triumph VS2500 was the ‘best in show.’

“My surprise was not that it was about this excellent centre lathe, but about the source of the compliment.”

The TIMTOS show was the regional launch-pad for the new Tornado T6M series, described by Mr Berry as “the most advanced and capable range of modern turning-centres that money can buy.”

“These CNC turning centres offer high capability, productivity, and accuracy but, above all, consistency of finished product,” he said.

In addition to the “all singing all dancing” top-of-the-line machines, there is the Tornado EL range with either chuck or bar-feed configurations.

capacity of 52 mm and swing over bed of 440 mm. giving a substantially improved maximum turning length of 420 mm and maximum turning diameter of 215 mm.

These machines have a fully programmable C-axis, complete with discbrake spindle clamping, and have been designed to add radial and axial milling, drilling, boring, and tapping capabilities to the globally-popular Tornado range.

There was quite a stir when 600UK finally took the wraps off two new members of the Harrison Alpha XS Series, the powerful 1660 and 1760 models.

The renowned Alpha range has been a legend in the world’s engineering workshops for several decades, and the XS Series is designed, engineered, and built to exacting tool-room accuracy standards (DIN 8605).

All models are noted for their infinitelyvariable speed, and now have significantly enhanced technical features – with up to 85 improvements across the range.

The two newcomers have been designed to cope with the demands of “oil country” work. As visitors to TIMTOS clearly saw, the 1660XS and 1760XS are sturdily built to withstand demanding heavy-duty use, and to give years of reliable service with the minimum of maintenance.

Mr Purser said: “Whether you need the grunt of the two new models, or the highquality repeatability and superb surface finish of the proven smaller models, you will find the right machine at the right price in the Alpha range.”

internal mechanics of this type of boring bar are costly and can be difficult to handle.

Insufficient lubrication use can damage sensitive internal mechanics, and if not monitored exactly, the tool can jam or hook in the workpiece and cause damage to the machine, fixture, tool, and part.

An asymmetric solution In collaboration with a major automotive manufacturer´s engine block operations, Kennametal engineering staff has advanced the boring function with Option3.0, asymmetric line boring. This is a geometric leap forward that accentuates the advantages of reaming and line boring while virtually eliminating the disadvantages of both.

As with most advanced solutions, the principle at the foundation is quite basic.

Normal guide diameters are of full material or build of three or more guide pads, providing no degree of freedom from the bore wall while feeding in and out. The Kennametal solution supports on guide pads in a setup similar to a typical guide pad reamer, but the guide pad, normally located 180° to the cutting edge, was rotated so the resulting design provides freedom to enter and exit the guide part even passing through the raw bores. This geometry allows feeding the bar through raw bores on an eccentric path.

The process, then, looks like this: • A pilot reamer is fed in and finishes journal 5 • The component (or machine table) gets rotated 180 degrees • The asymmetric boring bar is fed in offcenter using the machining center´s X-Y axis • The tool is moved to the center and

finishes journals 1 through 4 simultaneously • The tool is retracted off-center with fast feed out.

Such asymmetric line boring retains all the advantages of previous line boring efforts -- high-quality precision bores, support on both ends of the tool, while no expensive lift functions, obstructive counter bearings or critical mechanisms inside the tool are needed. It also adds the fact that complete feed-in and feed-out moves can be done at increased feed rates on conventional machining centers, adding efficiency to the process.

The indexable inserts offered with this eccentric boring bar solution are advanced.

High-precision RI8 inserts have eight cutting edges with pre-defined back taper, which allows for high feed rates. Diameter can be adjusted to the precision of 1 micron.

The high clamping force provided by the conical clamp screw avoids any settling effects.

Both inserts and the asymmetric boring bar are designed so the inserts clamp directly into the boring bar body. This eliminates the need for cartridges and the additional tolerances and space they require.

In short, this asymmetric line-boring solution increases machining robustness, process speeds, and reduces tool maintenance and handling, all while being compatible with CNC machining centers – a solution any manufacturer in search of process improvements will find anything but boring.

Kobot Systems will have a range of its latest innovative products on display at NMW in Melbourne in May. This includes the unique Amada Miyachi hand held fibre laser welder, Smartscope Vision Measuring System, Collapsible Stillages and a new water proofing methodolgy from Europlasma. Also on display on Stand 5710 will be a range of fastening solutions from Kilews, HIOS. There are many pallet type storage methodologies now being used in industry – but few offer the many advantages of the collapsible stillage. These are metal heavy duty storage stillages that can be folded and collapsed down when empty and can be stacked multiple high to be returned to depot or factory, thus saving space and costs. There are many configurations and sizes available.

They are widely used in the automotive industry, where component suppliers supply parts to the main auto-maker. The stillages can be stacked on top of each other, up to five high without pallet racking, when fully loaded. Collapsible stillages from Kobot Systems are designed specifically

for Australian conditions. They feature a 1165x1165mm base, which allows you to easily load trucks and containers with two stillages abreast.

KOCKUMS GIVES BEGA CHEESE PRODUCTION A LIFT

To reduce the risk of injury and enhance worker safety Bega Cheese in recent years has implemented three innovative handling solutions from Kockums Bulk Systems.

This includes the Tawi vacuum-assisted lifting systems and Protema hoists.

Bega currently uses Protema trolleys to pick or place rolls of labels to the rear

of a shelf. With this trolley system there is no longer a need for expensive Roll-Out racking.

With the Protema trolley rolled under the bottom shelf, the core gripper is able to reach the rear rolls. It is then inserted, and grips instantly by the touching of the control lever.

The roll is then lifted by the mast attachment, using the hand control, and the trolley enables moving it to a packaging machine.

A Kockums’ core gripper attached to a hoist is used to reposition another sized roll. The core gripper is introduced into the core, and at the touch of the lever an attachment is made, and the roll is then lifted and relocated.

At the stage of release, the core gripper is rotated through 90°, which allows the roll to be placed on the shelf, and the core gripper extracted.

Tawi vacuum operated Vacueasylifts are used to pick a pair of boxes simultaneously for de-palletising, and then positioning them onto a conveyor.

A lightweight overhead gantry allows the operator to move the boxes easily, requiring very little energy.

FREE PROGRAM TO HELP QLD WORKERS QUIT SMOKING QLD employers are being urged to help their workers quit smoking by joining a free Workplace Quit Smoking Program.

Delivered by the Queensland Quitline service, the program is part of Queensland Government’s Healthier, Happier, Workplaces initiative, which supports businesses to develop workplace health and wellbeing programs.

Queensland’s Chief Health Officer Dr Jeannette Young said: “If your workers are ready to quit smoking, they don’t have to do it alone.

“The Workplace Quit Smoking Program supports workers to quit through a combination of counselling and nicotine replacement therapy, such as patches, gum or lozenges.

“The program is for Queensland workplaces with workers in blue-collar occupations, such as trade workers, labourers, drivers or machinery operators, including industries like construction, transport, wholesale, manufacturing, mining, agriculture, fisheries and forestry.

“Best of all, the program is free and easy to administer so all eligible businesses should take advantage of this great opportunity.”

Dr Young said supporting workers to quit smoking and creating a smoke-free workplace could bring immediate business benefits.

“Helping your workers to quit smoking can boost your business, especially as a part of a wider workplace wellness program,” Dr Young said.

“Workers who don’t smoke are healthier and less prone to injury — that means lower

rates of absenteeism. It also means workers are happier and more motivated.

“A smoke-free workplace gives your business a positive, healthy image and running costs, such as cleaning and insurance, are reduced.

“Workers also take fewer smoking breaks and long-term, your business can see an increase in productivity.”

Dr Young added the Workplace Quit Smoking Program had helped hundreds of Queensland workers beat their smoking habit.

“In the last 18 months, 91 per cent of people who completed the Workplace Quit Smoking Program had either quit smoking or reduced their cigarette use by at least 14 cigarettes a day,” Dr Young said.

An estimated 500,000 Queensland adults smoke on a daily basis. By supporting people to quit smoking at work — the place where we spend most of our daily lives — we can make a real, lasting difference to the health and wellbeing of Queenslanders, while helping Queensland businesses reach new heights of success.”

AQUALUMA: A SHINING AUSSIE MADE SUCCESS STORY English historian Thomas Fuller once fittingly said: "A stitch in time saves nine."

This saying which basically means “a timely effort will prevent more work later” may well have been coined for two Australian brothers – Carl and Grant Amor.

Their hard work and diligence has certainly paid big dividends.

Fourth generation Australian-born and raised in New Zealand, the Amor brothers migrated to the Gold Coast, Queensland in 1985.

They started their first Australian business with a motor trimming/panel beating shop.

The business soon became the only approved Rolls Royce repair centre in Queensland. Their business success is a testament to their high standards of quality, time management and customer service.

With an extensive history of boating in 1985 the Amor brothers bought a 53’ Southern Cross Motor Yacht Hull and Decks from the factory.

The brothers spent all of their spare time over the next four years building the aptly named Belle Amor and launched her in December 1999.

In 2003 the Automotive side of the Amor brothers business was sold and they retained their Marine Trimming Business located in the Gold Coast City Marina.

It was at this time the Amor’s decided to

add underwater lighting to Belle Amor and upon researching the products available.

They identified the many pitfalls of these products such as metal housings, glass lens, seals, external driver boxes and old technology light sources. They came to the conclusion that none of these existing products were suitable for the environment they intended to be used in.

Grant Amor designed and constructed an efficient and economical Thur Hull Underwater LED Light – and Aqualuma was launched in 2004.

Generation 1 quickly became recognized within the marine industry for its iconic indestructible polymer housing and energy efficiency. Aqualuma has dedicated an extensive amount of funds and time to their research and development section.

Late last year the two brothers launched their 4th Generation of Underwater Thru Hull LED Lights.

Aqualuma boasts patents in 127 countries and worldwide certifications; it has evolved and grown to include a comprehensive and versatile range of submersible, deck and flood lighting.

In 2011, Aqualuma was voted Australian Exporter of the Year by the Australian International Marine Export Group.

The latest achievement for the Amor brothers was the winning of the prestigious

and highly coveted, Premier of Queensland Export Awards for Environmental Solutions.

Food labelling Bill conditionally welcomed The Australian Made Campaign today welcomed the renewed focus on country-oforigin labelling in Parliament, brought about by the reintroduction of a food labelling Bill by the Greens party and independent Senator Nick Xenophon.

“While we welcome the reintroduction of this Bill, the Government is yet to announce its decisions on the food labelling enquiry undertaken last year by the House of Representatives Senate Committee on Agriculture and Industry. It would make sense to complete that review before commencing

yet another one,” Australian Made Campaign Chief Executive, Ian Harrison said.

“The current issue with imported frozen berries highlights the need for clearer country-of-origin labelling, as it appears consumers may have been confused about where they came from.”

The Australian Made Campaign is the not-for-profit organisation that administers and promotes Australia’s registered country-of-origin certification trade mark, which authenticates whether a product has genuinely been made or grown in Australia.

For a number of years the Australian Made Campaign has been calling for the regulations under Australian Consumer Law to fall into line with the more stringent rules for using the Australian Made, Australian Grown logo, thereby eradicating critical loopholes that currently exist.

“The Australian Made Campaign supports – and in fact originated - the proposal to draw up regulations to clarify the concept of ‘substantial transformation’ and to specify processes which, by themselves, do not satisfy this test,” Mr Harrison said.

“The proposal to label food in such a way that highlights significant ingredients – ‘Made in Australia from Australian milk’ for chocolate, for example – as long as all requirements for a ‘Made in Australia’ claim are met, makes good sense as well.

“We still cannot however support the Bill in its current form. We do not see the value in banning the claims ‘Australian Made’ or ‘Made in Australia’ for food products in favour of the equivalent terms ‘Australian Manufactured’ or ‘Manufactured in Australia’.”

WORLD-FIRST WAVE ENERGY FARM M The world’s first wave-energy farm off Perth has started generating electricity.

This pioneering project, developed by Fremantle-based Carnegie Wave Energy, will provide renewable electricity for Australia's largest naval base, HMAS Stirling, on Garden Island.

The same system is also used to run a small desalination plant, which will be used to supply up to one-third of the base's fresh water needs.

Minister for Industry and Science Ian Macfarlane officially switched on the new system in February this year.

The project has been supported by $13.1 million in federal government funding through the Australian Renewable Energy Agency.

"Australia has great potential for further wave energy applications, with the resources on our south and south-west coast among the best in the world,” said Mr Macfarlane. “It makes sense to tap into this renewable potential that will help diversify our energy mix.

"The Carnegie project is great evidence of a commercial success in renewable energy.

Mr Macfarlane said the government is investing an additional $13 million for Carnegie's CETO 6 Project – which is in its preliminary design phase.

"Renewable energy is an important part of Australia's energy profile, and the Australian Government is working to ensure it continues to play a role both here in Australia and through international applications."

The WA project features two buoys, 11m in diameter, below the ocean surface (with a third to follow). When waves move the buoys, it creates hydraulic pressure that is delivered to a plant onshore to be converted to power for the base.

If successful, this ambitious $100 million project could cause an explosion in wave power.

After all, Australia is blessed with abundant wave energy – perhaps more than any other country in the world.

However, there are also substantial challenges. Some estimates put wave energy 15 to 20 years behind wind energy on the development curve.

Carnegie Wave Energy CEO Michael Ottaviano said the WA units provided enough energy to power the equivalent of between 1,500 to 2,000 households.

"It's the only operating wave power station in the world," he said.

"We're really excited to be putting power into the grid to supply HMAS Stirling on Garden Island.

"It's a culmination of about 10 years work, about $100 million in funding, most of it from shareholders, and also with the support of the Federal Government and the State Government of Western Australia, and the Department of Defence."

Mr Ottaviano said it was not easy to secure financing.

"It's never a linear path to get to a point like this when you're developing a new technology," he said.

"Eight, nine years ago we were an idea in need of about

$100 million and some serious innovation, and that's really what we've been able to deliver.

"Through the ups and downs - we've had the global financial crisis in the midst, we've had renewable energy supported, not supported, and in amongst all that, the team has been able to deliver a world first."

The CEO said wave energy provided a very reliable source of energy 24/7.

"The challenge from here on is really about scale and cost.

We need to make the technology bigger, we need to make our projects bigger because that's what allows you to get your costs down," Mr Ottaviano said.

"If you built a one-megawatt coal-fired power station, it would be the most expensive ... in the world.

"Likewise with wave energy – we need to be building 20 megawatts, 50 megawatts, 100, 200 megawatt power stations and we would be cost-competitive.

"We've specifically designed the technology to be scalable and one of the main aims of this project was to show you could plug multiple wave units together and have them operating in sync.

"So, if you can do it with two or three, and it's actually harder to do it with two or three than it is with 100 because the variability is quite high – if you've got 100 units, it's much to easier to control and the footprint's very small."

He said the WA site was chosen specifically.

"Our wave resource in Western Australia is the best in the world, and theoretically the resource that hits our coastline every day could power the state 10 times over," Mr Ottaviano said.

"Across the country, it's the best in the world as well, and the resource there could power the country twice over, so the opportunity is huge and Australia should be a world leader in this particular technology because we've got the best resource."

WA's Energy Minister Mike Nahan said the plant could operate in a variety of conditions.

"This technology can operate in a variety of water depths, swell directions and seafloor conditions and can generate power for both onshore and offshore consumption," he said.

The WA Government had contributed $9.96 million from its low-emissions energy development fund towards the development of the technology and the project.

Mr Hugh Wolgamot, a Research Fellow at the Centre for Offshore Foundation Systems at the University of Western Australia, said while the new project looks promising, there

MAY PROVIDE A POWERFUL SOLUTION are still many challenges ahead.

There are some problems that are unique to wave energy, Mr Wolgamot says.

“First, wave energy, while predictable, is tricky to convert into electricity, he says. “The frequency at which the waves oscillate is critical, and a device must be able to be tuned to operate efficiently at different frequencies. However, at any one time waves with a range of frequencies are present, and this distribution changes over periods of hours or days.

“Second, extreme loads in the ocean (due to large waves) are much larger than the loads in normal operating conditions. The energy in stormy seas may easily be 100 times greater than in average conditions. Therefore, the costs may be driven by the need for a device that can withstand extremes, but the revenue is dictated only by the average conditions.

“Third, converting the absorbed energy to electricity entails the relatively low-frequency wave oscillations being converted into much higher-frequency oscillations for electricity generation. Each step of the power conversion chain (if there are many) must be as efficient as possible. This is further complicated by the fact that the size of the wave oscillations change from wave to wave and over hours and days.

“Finally, maintenance of devices offshore is more difficult and costly than for devices onshore, and is therefore generally minimised to the extent possible.”

However Mr Wolgamot says much progress has been made toward overcoming these challenges.

“The earliest interest in wave energy was in the UK, Norway and Japan, and since the oil crisis of the 1970s great progress has been made in the fundamental understanding of the behaviour of wave energy devices, he said.

“The first prototype devices appeared in these countries in the 1970s and 1980s.

“The interaction of neighbouring devices in arrays is also complex. In wave energy, these interactions happen both ‘backwards’ and ‘forwards’, unlike in a wind farm where each turbine has a (negative) effect on downwind turbines only.

“Carnegie’s full-scale array deployment will provide a good opportunity to learn more.”

A recent study identified 147 different devices under development worldwide (including several in Australia) – although only a couple have reached a similar stage of

development to Carnegie’s.

Mr Wolgamot says it is encouraging that there are relationships between Carnegie and academic institutions, including Swinburne and the Australian Maritime College, the University of Adelaide and the University of Western Australia. Other wave energy companies in Australia are also involved in such exchanges of ideas.

Mr Wolgamot says it’s too early to say what a future Australian grid including wave energy would look like.

“If renewables become a large part of the national power supply, it will undoubtedly be best to have a mix, and wave energy can certainly be part of that.

“In the meantime, progress depends on more projects like Carnegie’s getting off the ground, or more accurately out to sea.”

DRINKING WATER NOT ONLY ENERGISES YOUR BODY – BUT ALSO YOUR HOUSE Who would have thought that the water we drink could also be used as an energy source?

But if you live in the US city of Portland, Oregon your lights may now be partly powered by your drinking water.

An ingenious new system captures energy as water flows through the city’s pipes, creating hydropower without the negative environmental effects of something like a dam.

Small turbines in the pipes spin in the flowing water, and send that energy into a generator.

“It’s pretty rare to find a new source of energy where there’s no environmental impact,” says Gregg Semler, CEO of Lucid Energy, the Portland-based startup that designed the new system. “But this is inside a pipe, so no fish or endangered species are impacted. That’s what’s exciting.”

For water utilities, which use massive amounts of electricity, the system can make it cheaper to provide clean drinking water. Utilities can either use the power themselves or sell it to a city as a new source of revenue.

“We have a project in Riverside, California, where they’re using it to power streetlights at night,” Semler says.

“During the day, when electricity prices are high, they can

use it to offset some of their operating costs.”

In Portland, one of the city’s main pipelines now uses Lucid’s pipes to make power that’s sent into the grid.

Though the system can’t generate enough energy for an entire city, the pipes can power individual buildings like a school or library, or help offset a city’s total energy bill. Unlike wind or solar power, the system can generate electricity at any time of day, regardless of weather, since the pipes always have water flowing through them.

The pipes can’t generate power in every location; they only work in places where water is naturally flowing downward with gravity (if water is being pumped, the system would waste energy). But they have another feature that can be used anywhere: The pipes have sensors that can monitor water, something that utilities couldn’t do in the past.

“We made electrical infrastructure really smart over the last 20 to 25 years, but the same hasn’t happened in water,” Semler says. He points to the example of a pipe that burst near UCLA last year, wasting a staggering 20 million gallons of water in the middle of California’s crippling drought.

“They didn’t really know that the pipe burst until

somebody from UCLA called,” Semler explains. “Our pipe can get indicators like pressure, a leading indicator for whether a pipe is leaking or not. So before it bursts and before we waste all the water, there are onboard information systems that water agencies can get to more precisely manage their infrastructure.”

Sensors in the pipe can also monitor water quality, making sure it’s safe to drink.

The company hopes to work with cities to install new systems as old pipes wear out. They’re also hoping to expand to the developing world. “It’s a great source of remote power,” says Semler. “So in places outside the city that don’t have an electrical grid, you’re able to use the system to generate energy.”

The biggest potential for the new system may be in places like California, where 20% of total energy use goes into the water supply—and even more electricity will be used as cities start to install desalination plants. With the pipes, utilities can generate some of their own muchneeded power.

“There’s a lot of energy in going into making sure we have safe clean drinking water,” Semler says. “Our focus is really on helping water become more sustainable.”

THE HIGH COST OF CORROSION ON INDUSTRY The economic impact of corrosion and its degradation of infrastructure and assets is estimated to be 3 to 5 per cent of GDP each year.

This represents an annual cost of many billions of dollars to the Australian and New Zealand economies.

The cost of corrosion to the water industry is one area that has been quantified. The effects on water distribution and sewerage collection pipework and infrastructure impacts many areas of the economy and covers a wide ranging list of assets owned and operated by urban and rural water utilities, industry, agricultural and domestic environments.

During a pipeline failure event, there are also intangible costs that can have a significant effect upon the wider community.

These can include disruptions due to flooding, road closures and loss of trade.

These costs have been estimated at $91

million a year to the Australian urban water industry.

The total estimated annual cost of corrosion to the industry and the wider community in Australia is $982 million, which equates to an approximate annual cost of $60 for every adult in the country.

The water industry corrosion cost figures are contained in a report entitled Corrosion Challenges – Urban Water Industry by Greg Moore and commissioned by the Australasian Corrosion Association (ACA).

The report estimated the corrosion failure costs and identified which might be attributable to industry practices, industry skilling and regulatory frameworks. The report also looked at some potential cost reduction strategies that could be implemented.

The main infrastructure assets owned and operated by water authorities are the pipelines and treatment plants. Moore's report showed that the Australian water industry faces many challenges, particularly in the areas of asset management of ageing infrastructure and the required

training to support the prevention and remediation of corrosion. The cost attributable to the maintenance and repair of sewage treatment plants is also considerable.

The failure of a major pipeline or reservoir could have far reaching consequences.

Not only could such an event have immediate catastrophic impacts to the surrounding area, there would also be long-term economic impact on water, and possibly power, supplies to cities and towns.

Repair and rebuilding costs would also be high.

Sewage treatment plants deal with raw sewage and are subjected in most cases to more aggressive environments than water treatment plants, primarily due to the presence and corrosive effects of hydrogen sulphide.

In addition to the pipelines and treatment facilities, there are many other assets such as manholes, sewer vents, tanks, reservoirs, and pumping stations associated with water and sewerage systems which also have costs associated with corrosion. These costs can be high, especially where repairs and recoating of steel water tanks and other complex steel structures are required.

Civil assets comprised approximately 87 per cent of the reported depreciation costs for the water treatment plants discussed in Moore's study. Using this data and the premise that all of the civil depreciation was due to corrosion, an average annual depreciation figure of $600,000 per plant was estimated.

In all treatment facilities there is an ongoing program of replacement and repair to the infrastructure of the plant. It can be assumed, therefore, that this figure, or a proportion of it, could be used as a representative annual cost of corrosion.

The remit of the ACA includes educational activities such as seminars and training courses to inform and guide organisations and practitioners about topics including the latest protective technologies and processes.

A recommendation in Moore's report was to implement accredited training courses designed for water industry personnel. Such courses would cover topics such as corrosion basics for the water industry; materials and corrosion control for use in conjunction with the Water Supply Code of Australia and the Sewerage Code of Australia; and identification and assessment of pipeline failures in the water industry. In particular, there should also be increased training in cathodic protection technologies, especially as applied to aging steel water mains, tanks and other structures.

HOW EFFICIENT IS YOUR WASTEWATER PUMP? In selecting the most efficient wastewater pump, do managers of assets simply look for the pump with the best hydraulic efficiency?

If so, they may not be winning the pump efficiency game, according to leading pump supplier Hydro Innovations.

If selecting a clean water pump, energy costs amount to up to 80-90% of a pump’s overall life cycle cost.

For a wastewater pump, energy costs may only equate to 25%-35% of a pump’s whole of life cost, with blockages, downtime, ease (or otherwise) of maintenance,

reliability, and cost of repairs being the biggest cost.

A pump can be very hydraulically efficient, but if it is not an efficient solids handler, all the costs will be in maintenance and upkeep of the pump.

Factors such as blocking frequency, unblocking efficiency and ease of access should be taken into account.

Also, if the internal clearances of a pump are easily adjusted, that pump will maintain its hydraulic efficiency and also block less frequently than a pump whose clearances have “opened up” because of the abrasive

action of wastewater.

Downtime is another “killer” and a hidden cost of a poorly selected wastewater pump.

Some unreliable pumps can cause frequent overflows and production line stoppages, and if they are difficult or time consuming to repair, make the problem worse.

A pump that is a good at passing solids – including stringy materials such as rags and gloves – will be more reliable, and if it can be put back into service quickly after a breakdown, will be an asset worth having.

DAF PUMP SAVES ENERGY AND CAPITAL COSTS A single DAF pump can replace the entire air bubble system on Dissolved Air Floatation (DAF) plants, says leading supplier, Hydro Innovations.

Hydro’s Edur Multiphase pumps draw in air through a “snorkel” in the suction line, sheer the air, then feed it into the DAF plant, producing a discharge stream into the tank that is laden with 30 to 50 micron air bubbles.

The DAF system normally consists of a wastewater tank, compressor, air saturation vessel, and effluent pump. The effluent

pump draws effluent from the tank and pumps it into the air separation vessel. A compressor also pumps air into this vessel.

The air/water mixture is then fed back into the wastewater tank where fats and oils and other small wastewater particles attach to the bubbles, which rise to the surface of the tank, where they are mechanically scrapped away.

Because the Edur Multiphase pump can produce its own micro-bubbles, asset owners can do away with the compressor, the air separation vessel and any control

and/ or ancillary components for these items. This has a major impact on what asset owners need to pay for their plant.

NSW TRAINING AWARDS CELEBRATE 60 YEARS This year marks the 60th anniversary of the NSW Training Awards, which recognise outstanding achievements in vocational education and training (VET).

The Awards reward outstanding apprentices, trainees and students as well as trainers, teachers, training providers and employers throughout NSW. The event has grown from strength to strength in recent years with more than 800 applications received each year.

There are more than 95,000 apprentices and trainees currently

employed in NSW, and some 50,000 of those apprenticeships are in traditional trades.

The NSW Training Awards 2015 were launched earlier this year with 16 award categories.

This includes Apprentice of the Year, Trainee of the Year, School Based Apprentice/Trainee of the Year and Employer of the Year.

State winners of each category will be announced at the NSW Training Awards presentation event in September, 2015.

NSW winners will be eligible to compete with winners from all states and territories for the Australian Training Awards, to be held in Hobart in November.

COMMUNICATING AND CONNECTING ARE TWO DIFFERENT THINGS

During a recent sales training session I conducted, we discussed how to open a sales meeting and what to do when a prospect says: “Tell me a bit about your company and what they do.” More about how to respond to that later.

In his leadership book “Everyone communicates, Few Connect” Dr John Maxwell discusses how everyone communicates in one form or another but very few people connect.

The reason very few people connect, especially in the sales profession is, they don’t get it. They don’t get that, when they go on a sales appointment it’s not about them, it’s about the prospect.

It’s not about what the sales persons company does, it’s about what the prospects company does.

Now this is a tough concept for most sales people to swallow. After all, the first 5 to 10 minutes of every sales meeting they have ever been to is talking about

their company’s background, history, how long they have been in business and anything else they can think of that is self-serving. Why wouldn’t they do that?

This is the approach they have taken their entire sales career and it’s always worked, (so they think) why change?

In today’s high tech world, with so much information freely available on the net, the chances are, your prospect will know as much as they need to know about what your company does and what products or services you offer, before you even get to the appointment.

The purpose of a sales meeting is not to talk about what your company does, who they do it with and how good they are. The purpose of a sales meeting is to find out what your prospect’s company does, who they do it with, why they do it that way and how can your company help them do it better.

When you focus your attention on

your prospect, take a genuine interest in what they do and how you can help them do it better, you improve your chances of connecting, building trust and creating a customer for life.

So when a prospect says “tell me a little about what your company does” try replying with: “What exactly would you like to know?”

When you do this, listen to the answer give a brief but informative reply and then turn the focus on the prospect. By taking this approach, you eliminate the chance of wasting valuable “face to face” time with your prospect by giving an answer you only thought they wanted.

What you need to know is, your prospects don’t care about you. They only care about their business, what that means is, the faster you hone in on key business issues they have, the quicker you will get their attention and distance yourself from your competition.

Alternative versions of the question you can use “What part of xyz background interests you?”

“What aspect of XYZ would you like me to focus on?”

“Before I answer that — have you had any experience with our organization or a similar one in the past?”

“What if I started by describing work we have recently with clients similar to you.”

HIGH PRESSURE SENSORS FOR CYLINDER APPLICATIONS In response to a growing need for sensors that can withstand high pressure applications, TURCK is extending its CRS series with a new offering of high pressure inductive sensors.

Customers now have an enhanced offering for applications regarding cylinders with an operating pressure rating of 3000 psi.

Previously, it allowed for only 1500 psi.

AIRSKATE HOVAIR MAKES LIGHT WORK OF 32 TONNE MOVE moved out of the client's old smaller machine shop factory and into the permanent base alongside the 32 tonne milling machine.

These moves were successfully carried out by Sippel Group's Hire Set of 4 x AS34HP trademarked AIRSKATE HOVAIR Air Flotation Load Movement Equipment.

In the third part of this Rotacaster mini-series, the focus is on the revolutionary omniwheel and how it can benefit manufacturers …

Omni-wheels have been used in conveyor transfer stations and also as an alternative to ball transfer units for some time now, however they are still relatively unknown in the broader manufacturing and logistics world.

While it is hard to say exactly why they haven’t previously fulfilled their true potential in these areas, Rotacaster Wheels’ Managing Director, Peter McKinnon believes the answer lies in a question continually asked by those that have used omni-wheels in the past.

That is: “How do we get a replacement roller?”

“Their need to ask this question is driven by their experience of having lost rollers on similar products, says Mr McKinnon. “They are pleasantly surprised when we advise that there is no need, as you either have to wear the wheel out or destroy it.”

While similar products use rollers on inserted steel axles, Rotacaster’s patented method of manufacture uses a wheel frame incorporating the hub and outer roller axles, which are injection moulded as a single part.

This results in a light but extremely impact resistant wheel structure, and

over-moulding is used to encapsulates the remaining elements. Previously, the risk of lost rollers would have made the use of omniwheels untenable in mission critical applications given the time and cost impact of potential shutdowns and maintenance. The dependability of the Rotacaster wheel however, opens the door to deployment in a host of environments, providing a low cost solution to many of the more mechanical and power intensive systems. They are finding success as an alternative to ball transfer applications, air tables, and multi-directional pipe rollers for threading and spiral welding.

Australia Post recently replaced its ball transfer tables at its International Mail Exchange Hubs for both Melbourne and Brisbane to overcome staff injuries incurred while handling 40kg mail bags.

Given the soft and random nature of the surface of these bags, Rotacaster devised a combination of 48mm rotacaster wheels and low friction rollers to minimise the drag and effort required to successfully meet an ambitious maximum force/effort target. The result is a system that can effectively provide multi-directional movement for soft

packaging such as bags and sacks.

The 125mm wheel is also being used for pallet transfer stations in South Africa and Australia, multidirectional pipe threading and welding in the US, steel plate feed tables and light precast panel production in Australia and Canada.

Manufactured entirely of resins, the Rotacaster wheel is non-corrosive and offers a range of roller materials to cater for different needs, including driven applications. Rotacaster plans to add two new wheel diameters to its range this year – 35mm and 80mm. Its current 48mm wheel offers bores up to 12.7mm, making it one of the few that can be shaft mounted over a span. This allows easy retrofitting to existing conveyor frames or T-Slot aluminium sections.

MULTIPROTOCOL I/O MODULES FROM TURCK TURCK Australia has unveiled the first ultracompact, digital block-I/O modules of the new TBEN-S (Small) series.

The fully potted IP67 modules are only 1.25” x 5.6” and allow assembly directly on the machine. With their extended temperature range from -40 °C to +70°C, the devices are highly versatile.

Even with the new compact design every TBEN-S module can be operated without additional gateways in each of the three Ethernet systems PROFINET®, Modbus TCP or EtherNet/IP. Additionally, thanks to TURCK’s multiprotocol technology, the devices recognize the used protocol automatically by listening to the communication during the start-up phase. An integrated switch allows the use of the devices in line topology.

“The release of the digital TBEN-S provides our customers with a flexible solution that can be mounted directly to

machine, and at a smaller size than anyone else on the market,” said Product Manager Noah Glenn. “Additionally, the digital TBEN-S is availble in a wide variety of options so customers can have exactly what their application needs.”

The TBEN-S modules are available in five variants: four digital inputs and outputs, eight digital inputs with module diagnostics, eight digital inputs with channel diagnostics, eight digital outputs as well as eight universal digital inputs and outputs.

THIS TINY WHEEL LIFTS BIG LOADS The new Tente Linea Light Series is a castor that offers a load capacity of 100kg, with a low overall height of 50mm.

It is the only highest dynamic load capacity for a double wheel synthetic castor. The load capacity is tested according to EN12530 institutional castors.

The castor is also available with Smart Brake Lever, so when the brake lever is engaged, this part is in contact with the ground.

This significantly reduces the risk of damaging the brake lever.
