INDUSTRIAL MANSLAUGHTER IN THE DOCK The concept of industrial manslaughter in Australia is set to face its first test with the first prosecution launched under Queensland’s two-year-old industrial manslaughter laws. That the prosecution comes at the same time that Victoria is in the process of passing its own legislation only serves to highlight the process.

The Queensland case has been brought against Brisbane Auto Recycling Pty Ltd. And separate charges have been made against the two company directors for engaging in ‘reckless conduct’ resulting in a workplace fatality.

PRINT MEDIA CONTINUE TO BLOOM

Readership is continuing to grow for print products in Australia, with IbisWorld valuing the print-media industry at $3 billion in 2018.

Is it just me, or is there more than a little irony in the “lucky country” tag that Australia has worn with pride for so long?

Certainly, with the effects of the continuing drought devastating our rural populations and a fresh wave of bushfires tearing indiscriminately through country towns and even threatening our cities, “lucky” really doesn’t seem to be the correct adjective.

Or maybe it is.

We are certainly lucky to have the national sense of mateship and community that sees thousands of Australians volunteer for Rural Fire Services and State Emergency Services around the country.

We are certainly lucky that businesses around Australia, from the pubs and the clubs to our own manufacturing industry do more than their fair share of fundraising and good deeds for worthy causes.

And we are certainly lucky that we live in a multicultural society where bigotry on the basis of race, creed, colour or sexuality is no longer accepted.

Community is a powerful word.

And I have been delighted to see some of the good works that Industry Update readers and advertisers have been performing in the Community section of the magazine. There will be many more good news stories in that section in 2020.

However, to close the year in print, we have given over the Community section to our Christmas Giving Guide, which will hopefully give you some food for thought about the important work that our charities perform at Christmas.

Please read it, and please give generously.

So it only remains for me on behalf of everyone at Industry Update to wish all our readers a Merry Christmas and a prosperous 2020.

Looking at the recently released Safe Work Australia work-related traumatic injuries and fatalities statistics I have become rather alarmed at the prevalence of injuries and fatalities among older workers.

still working beyond that: the 65 and over group registered 3.3 fatalities per 100,000.

While the figures, which have just been released for 2018, do show a continual decline in both fatalities and in serious injury compensation claims over the preceding 15 years, certain groups of workers seem to be suffering more than others. And it’s my age group that’s coming off worst.

Interestingly, the Australian Bureau of Statistics data on the subject paint a contrasting picture, with older workers taking on average half the number of days off sick than the 25-34 age group. And with the nation’s workforce steadily getting older on average, this is no bad thing.

For example, when it comes to the frequency of serious claims, those in the prime of their years, the 30-34 age group, recorded only 4.3 claims per million hours worked. That figure jumps to 7.7 for the 60-64 age group.

The statistics for work-related injury fatalities use slightly different age groupings, but the story is similar. Out of the total of 144 work related fatalities in 2018, the older age groups were also overrepresented.

So in terms of fatality rate, the 25-34 age group registered just 0.8 fatalities per 100,000 workers, while the 55-64 group were more than double that at 1.7 per 100,000. And woe betide those who were

Or are older workers just plain unlucky?

ABS data also indicate that mature age workers are less likely to experience work-related injuries compared to younger workers.

So it seems we may be back to the old “lies, damned lies and statistics” argument that says you can use data to prove anything you want.

However, I’m certainly going to keep an increased eye out for any dangers at work as it seems I’m at “that dangerous age”.

So do keep an eye out for your older colleagues as well. Who knows what might happen to them? Hopefully, one day they’ll get to retire.

to their failure as directors to ensure that the business had those systems in place.

According to Queensland Minister for Industrial Relations, Grace Grace: “Individuals guilty of industrial manslaughter will face up to 20 years imprisonment, with corporate offenders liable for fines of up to $10 million.”

The financial penalties proposed in the Victorian legislation are even higher, with a maximum fine of $16 million in addition to the 20-year sentence.

The most significant difference between the Victorian legislation and that already in force in Queensland is in the scope of the offence. The proposed laws

will also cover deaths caused by mental injuries, including trauma from bullying or other forms of abuse that was sustained on the job.

However, Victorian AttorneyGeneral Jill Hennessy has reassured industry groups that the burden of proof for employers to be charged under the new laws will be high, saying that: "The standard is very high because the penalty is very high."

And therein lies the problem for other states (notably NSW) in introducing industrial manslaughter legislation. While existing legislation carries lower sentences, the prospect of punishment for accidents

caused by poor WH&S practices is well established.

This led NSW Better Regulation Minister Kevin Anderson to comment: "We've been watching the approach that has been taken in other jurisdictions, and to be frank, it's one thing implementing laws that sound tough, but if you can't bring a successful prosecution then it's little more than a catchy title on a page."

While opinion is divided, among the major political parties, it is only the Greens that are committed to “the introduction of strong, nationally consistent industrial manslaughter laws”.

Not surprisingly, Trades Unions

around the country continue to campaign for uniform industrial manslaughter legislation, while employers’ bodies in the main continue to resist.

Now, all eyes will be on the Queensland courts pending the case against Brisbane Auto Recycling.

SENSOR SPECIALIST HAS EXPANSION ON THE RADAR

It may have taken 32 years, but the opening of the new VEGA Australia headquarters in Caringbah “clearly shows that we’re here to stay”, in the words of Managing Director John Leadbetter.

The new facility, with its three separate buildings provides a total of 2800m2 of office and warehouse space together with a purpose designed training and conference centre. And the site has been designed and architected as a crossover between the Black Forest and Australia, combining the company’s German parenthood with its local workforce.

purchased a plot of land in Caringbah and began work with architects to design the ideal base for Vega Australia.

That design work took fully two years, with development approval being awarded late in 2017, and the construction tender awarded in July 2018.

That extra office space will give Leadbetter the green light to immediately increase his support staff to cater for the company’s growth. And while the company has doubled its turnover over the past five years, that has been achieved with limited resources due to the lack of space at Kirrawee.

“We had to become rather creative with our use of space,” says Leadbetter.

“With only one meetings room, scheduling things like training and other functions was becoming difficult. And the stores and service department were starting to fill up as well.”

John Leadbetter could envisage a much better way of doing business.

And with the approval of the VEGA management in Germany, in 2015 he

Those facilities include the latest in networking and communications equipment across the whole site, providing the bandwidth required by a company that conducts its business across multiple timezones, with three in Australia plus the corporate base in Germany.

But it’s not just space and technology that the new base will bring to VEGA Australia, the buildings have been designed to the latest buildings standards, with extensive use of skylights and cross-breezes to reduce the lighting and climate control costs. And the sustainable materials that have been used to reflect the “Black Forest meets Australia” theme include timber floors and decking with stainless-steel rails.

The sensor manufacturer’s growth in Australia has been impressive. The local company was set up in 1987 at Brookvale on Sydney’s Northern Beaches. Steady early market expansion saw VEGA Australia move to a new home at Kirrawee in the Sutherland Shire in 2000.

With a total of 480m2 of offices, stores and service, the new premises seemed made to measure for Leadbetter. But a little over decade on, the limitations started to become apparent: with a growing workforce shortage of space was becoming an issue.

This has facilities for up to 32 people at a time to receive what John Leadbetter describes as “proper training – not death

by PowerPoint”.

Leadbetter explains that there’s a concept within VEGA of “design for tomorrow”, and he made sure that the new base was designed very much with tomorrow’s requirements in mind, rather than just today’s.

So, for example, while VEGA Australia’s current headcount of 26 staff includes 12 who are permanently on the road, the new office has space for 36 staff (not to mention 32 parking bays, compared with the six at Kirrawee).

The new warehouse at Caringbah is twice the size of the old one, and it has been designed with security very much in mind – which is significant as it will be holding upwards of $4 million worth of stock. And Leadbetter maintains that having that level of inventory available in Australia could make the difference between winning a contract and losing it to a competitor.

One key advance for VEGA Australia comes in the shape of the third building on the new site – a dedicated training centre.

Central to the site is an outdoor area with five mature gum trees around which the admin block, warehouse and training centre have been built, providing a quiet oasis for staff to take a break. (That’s after they have visited the new lunchroom – a facility that was sorely missing from Kirrawee.)

“People should enjoy coming to work,” says Leadbetter. “That’s a key feature of the Australian lifestyle, and we think we’ve created a workplace that reflects it.”

TRAINING SCHOOL AIMS FOR HYDRAULICS BEST PRACTICE Hydraulink has established a new training school designed to provide its hose centre staff, hydraulics field technicians and customers with top training, skills and standards of safety and environmental practice.

The Hydraulink Academy offers a range of hydraulics-focused training programmes, including a number of nationally recognised units. The training, which can be tailored to suit particular requirements, is run by qualified trainers either on-site at a customer facility, or at a dedicated Hydraulink Academy venue in Australia or New Zealand.

The initiative applies to customers and staff of Hydraulink’s 400 service points Australia and New Zealand, as well as customers, distributors, OEMs and end users.

It adds to the company’s policy of investing in its staff to ensure they have an opportunity to grow with the business, while also delivering innovative solutions and consistent standards of safety and service excellence to the advantage of customers.

“The new Hydraulink Academy training courses are a great way to ensure our staff and our customers are up to date with best

practices in safety and environmental and practice processes,” says Jim Thompson, Group HR Manager, Hydraulink Australia and New Zealand.

“Hydraulic technicians are often working with high pressures – in many cases 5000 PSI or more – so keeping up to date with the latest safety practices is essential not only for their own safety, but for those who will end up using the machine being worked on,” Thompson adds.

The Hydraulink Academy training courses involve a combination of technical, safety, environmental, communication and service skills, which have all been developed in consultation with external third party safety consultants to ensure Hydraulink staff, franchisees, distributors, OEMs and end-users are appropriately trained and competent to work in such a highly specialised field.

“The courses involve nationally recognised units of competency, which can be used by the graduate towards a later higher qualification such as a Cert II, III, IV or Diploma within the Manufacturing and Engineering Training Package,” explains

Core outcomes for graduates of the Hydraulink Academy include the ability to safely and competently identify, select, assemble, install and remove high-pressure hydraulic fluid conductor components and assemblies.

Additionally, students are instructed on the safe shutdown of equipment, identification of hazardous energy sources and how to conduct thorough pre-work risk assessments to identify hazards to individuals and the environment and implement appropriate controls for the identified hazards.

“The potential adverse outcomes of a fluid conductor product prematurely failing in service are very serious, and can include serious injuries, permanent disability or

death, loss of productivity for the equipment the fluid conductor is fitted to, additional downtime and repair costs to repair the equipment,” says Tullier.

“Hydraulink’s training staff have more than 90 years’ combined industry experience, and we have invested in capital equipment for course attendees to practice on, within a controlled environment. An online training portal is provided for easy and intuitive access to relevant information,” he adds.

Hydraulink is planning to run courses approximately every four weeks in Australia and New Zealand, and can readily add additional courses as demand rises.

LAUNCHING AUSTRALIAN INDUSTRY TO THE MOON AND BEYOND

Few things capture the imagination like space travel.

So it’s not surprising to see the excitement sparked by the Prime Minister’s recent announcement of the Government’s $150 million investment in Australia’s space industry.

But while we are all captivated by the idea of space exploration, we sometimes take for granted the fact that space activities have practical applications on Earth. We have to remember that the opportunity to explore comes with huge economic opportunity.

Our $150 million five-year investment will support Australian space businesses to seize the opportunities created by NASA’s plan to return to the Moon and go on to Mars.

This work will develop Australian capability in a range of industries, including automation and robotics, satellite technology, communications, and health.

Australian industry already has world-renowned capabilities for operations in remote and extreme environments.

In Western Australia’s Pilbara region there are mine sites being operated remotely from Perth, 1600 kilometres away. This remote asset management gives us a perfect foundation for development of space technology.

The Government is also funding the development of a command and control facility in Western Australia to support the use of robotics, artificial intelligence and automation in space.

REMOVING THE BARRIERS BETWEEN INDUSTRY AND RESEARCH

When I wrote in this magazine last month, I posed the question: What is the Morrison Government’s plan to help manufacturers to grow and become globally competitive? Unfortunately the answer to this question has not become any clearer and it’s becoming increasingly obvious there likely may not be a plan.

Those that work in the space sector may have been momentarily elated upon hearing that the government was going to put $150 million into the space industry. However that elation was short lived when it was revealed in the last round of Senate Estimates that the first tranche of that funding isn’t due to start flowing until the second half of 2020.

They would have been further deflated upon hearing that the first year’s investment is only $5 million - a far cry from the Morrison Government's initial $150 million claim. We are yet to see any detail on how the funding would be dispersed or how many Australian jobs will be created.

Universities, vocational education providers and research institutions are shifting their focus from a “research for research sake” approach to a more outward looking position that will see them provide their expertise to industry so that as a country, we all prosper.

While we are starting to see some great results from such partnerships, it is clear that there are still barriers to seeing these collaborations thrive. Industry, research institutions and government all have a role to play in removing these barriers.

We can unlock the potential of world-class researchers teaming up with world-class industries to ensure we remain at the forefront of technological developments that will create more jobs and allow us to grow and prosper.

As the Shadow Minister for Industry I will continue to listen to all relevant stakeholders and I would welcome your input into how we can unlock the full potential of our research sector that will help us become world leaders not only

in manufacturing but across all sectors of the economy.

Any industry policy that is developed must address the issues that exist that prevent this collaboration.

Many businesses have realised the huge untapped potential that lies in our higher education sector and are looking for ways to tap into this resource.

One such project is the development of an anchor called Stevshark Rex, which has been created to access hard soils and previously unconquerable places in the ocean. It is through collaborations like this that large areas are opening up for resource exploration that previously weren’t within our reach.

This approach has seen the university partner with numerous local and international companies to commercialise the research they carry out. This benefits industry twice. Once in the initial research and commercialisation phase that gets a particular product to market. And secondly it means that our tertiary institutions are turning out graduates that are skilled up and job ready for the jobs of the future.

AUSTRALIAN MANUFACTURING GROWTH CONTINUES – FOR NOW The manufacturing sector continued its positive run in October, albeit at a slower pace, with the Ai Group Performance of Manufacturing Index falling by 3.1 points to 51.6. And while the sustained growth of the food and beverage sector continues to play the leading contribution to the figures, there are indications that manufacturers may be facing troubled times in the summer.

Both food and beverages, up 1.3 points to 61.8, and machinery and equipment, up 0.2 points to 54.2, increased their pace of expansion.

The chemicals sector fell slightly to 52.0, slowing its expansion. However, the continuing slowdown of the construction sector continued to weigh heavy on certain manufacturers, with building materials down 3.4 points to 48.5, and metal products still declining at 43.5.

However, it is the activity indexes that give most cause for concern, with

input prices rising again to a new high of 74.7, and the selling prices index falling by 3.9 points to 45.0. And while the lower Australian dollar can be used in part to explain some of the input price index rise, its effect on exports may also be apparent, with that index rising 2.2 to 51.8. (And a number of manufacturers highlighted increasing sales to the USA.) More worrying, though, was a sharp fall in new orders, down 8.8 to 48.3, despite evidence that pre-Christmas trade was running early this year, born out by an increase in the production index, which rose to 55.5.

Combined with audio-visual support tools for a number of large educational institutions, these products make up about 90 per cent of our business.

“We’re also Australia’s largest power distribution unit distributor and the only manufacturer, which means we compete strongly with our international counterparts, developing around 1000 units a month.”

Before smartphones, pagers were considered an advanced means of remote contact. Almost 40 years ago, they also provided a breakthrough for Melbournebased designer and manufacturer Computer Support Systems to cut its teeth in the data centre industry.

One of Victoria’s leading electronic monitoring and alarm management enterprises for the security, communications and data systems industries, Computer Support Systems embraced the thenleading technology to give its customers immediate information about the state of their computer rooms.

Known as data centres, these computer rooms form a secure, power protected, environmentally controlled space to house server, network and computer equipment for organisations.

“One customer – a mining company – had their air conditioning water systems in their data centre springing leaks,” says Computer Support Systems Managing Director and cofounder Robert Hallas.

“We realised there was nothing in the market like it so we researched, developed a tool, put it in the middle of the floor, and lit it on fire. We’ve been throwing money at that fire ever since.”

That metaphorical fire is still burning today, with research and development core to the business staying ahead of the curve in this growing industry.

“We recognised very early on that the products we manufacture must evolve to meet changing circumstances,” says Hallas.

“Electronics manufacturing is an evolving game, based on a 10-year cycle. When something is at its peak, you’re designing the next model at the same time so you can maintain the peak as long as you can.”

Proudly designing and manufacturing its products wholly in Australia, Computer Support Systems is constantly exploring

how to reduce the cost of manufacturing, increase reliability and overcome challenges of the industry.

“One of our challenges is people feeling they’re buying something inferior when they buy an Australian product,” says Hallas.

“Coupled with Chinese manufacturing being highly competitive on price, this can be an issue. We’re not the cheapest or the dearest out there, but we are a quality, reputable brand.”

With four major product lines and a fifth in production, the business supports a diverse range of industries and markets including government, manufacturing, managed services and retail. “In those days there was no data centre monitoring or mobile phones. The only remotely useful alert system was a tone pager – it would send out a tone and you’d call a number to see what was going on.

“The two-tone pager was the leading technology back then and we saw it as a way to providing real-time information to our customers, especially after hours.

So we designed a device that monitored temperature and the water underfloor in data centres using the two-tone pager as an alert system. That’s where it all began.

“Our product design is modular – a bit like ‘electrical LEGO’. So we can deploy quicker than anyone else, we stock the basic building blocks and we can tailor them to an individual client’s requirements and click them into place,” says Hallas.

The key to keeping on the innovation front foot? A support team.

“Bank of Melbourne has been great to work with,” says Hallas of his banking partnership with Victoria’s local bank. “They packaged up some of their products to better meet our needs and make it easier to facilitate transactions, especially overseas.

“They have a sleek system that allows us to do that, and it’s a great, time saving asset to our business. They also reviewed some of our loans that were costly and cumbersome and changed them to ones that are more flexible for the way we work today.

WORKPLACE TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT

Brian Hughes is a Principal Inspector with SafeWork NSW. We asked him for the official line on workplace traffic management.

IU: What do you see as the potential dangers in the interaction of pedestrians and forklifts in the workplace?

BH: The clearest danger is of a pedestrian being killed or seriously injured if they are struck or run over by a forklift. Unfortunately, this potential is realised far too frequently with pedestrians being injured by forklifts and other mobile plant in workplaces.

Pedestrians are not always aware of the risks forklifts pose to their safety, and are generally not provided with any information and training on forklift awareness when working near or around forklifts.

IU: How does workplace traffic management work?

BH: Workplace traffic management is a combination of control measures that are designed to eliminate where possible, or reduce the risk of injury to people from interactions between mobile plant such as forklifts, vehicles, pedestrians, or any other moving equipment. The control measures implemented should be in line with the hierarchy of controls.

Traffic management controls need to be tailored to suit each workplace and developed in consultation with workers. Controls need to always consider the activities being carried out such as loading and unloading of vehicles, traffic flow in the workplace, nature of the business, levels of activity, times of operation, etc to ensure risks are adequately identified.

Controls include physical controls such as barriers, exclusion zones, speed limits, induction and training of people, signage and the safety of customers or visitors from outside the workplace.

There also needs to be regular review and monitoring of controls to make sure they are, and are maintained as, effective.

IU: Is workplace traffic management mandatory in Australia?

BH: In short, yes – the longer answer is, under Work Health and Safety legislation it is a requirement to manage risk to the health and safety of people in a workplace that arise from identified risks. The risk posed by the interaction of pedestrians and moving plant – that is, vehicles of all sizes, forklifts and any other mobile equipment – is quite clear and this has resulted in a number of NOVEMBER 2019

PART ONE – WHY? Industry Update looks at the discipline of workplace traffic management and how it can be used to avoid accidents in the workplace.

Fortunately, work-related vehicle accidents are relatively rare, making up less than 10 per cent of accidents overall annually.

However, when they do happen, they are often extremely serious, and are a major cause of workplace death.

In 2017, 176 men and 14 women were killed in workplace accidents. Of these, 119 (63 per cent) were related to vehicles, either as a driver, passenger or bystander.

And 72 per cent of these fatalities were in transport, postal and warehousing, agriculture, forestry and fishing, and construction, which are all areas where vehicles operate in close proximity to workers.

In addition, the median time off work after an employee was seriously injured in 2015-16 was 5.8 weeks, and compensation payments are rising.

And that’s not taking into account injuries not requiring time off work, damage to vehicles, stock, machines and workplace infrastructure, repairs and maintenance, and administrative time.

There are also clear risks arising from the interaction of items of mobile plant with each other, particularly when it involves the risk of a forklift overturning.

There have been a number of fatalities in NSW alone over the last few years from forklifts overturning.

It is mandatory for all PCBUs to manage and control the risks associated with moving items of equipment.

There is some excellent guidance material available which provides comprehensive information on traffic management and as the regulator we are always willing to provide further information and answer any specific questions that people may have on WHS matters.

There is also the very real possibility – or probability – of WorkCover investigations and legal proceedings.

Even though the workplace fatality rate has halved since 2007, Safe Work Australia’s Australian Work Health and Safety Strategy 2012-22 aims to reduce the rate of serious injuries by a further 30 per cent, and fatalities by 20 per cent, by 2022.

And supply chains and networks have been identified as one of the seven action areas.

Aiming to reduce these figures, Safe Work Australia has produced a Workplace Traffic Management Guide that includes checklists for traffic hazards and traffic control measures, and specific guides for warehouses, construction, shopping centres and events.

The simplest way to reduce workrelated vehicle accidents is to keep vehicles apart from people, stock, machines and infrastructure.

So special consideration has to be given to places where vehicles and people operate in close proximity. These include

IU: What would be the consequences of failing to implement a traffic management policy?

BH: The consequences can include death or serious injury of people whether they are workers, contractors or visitors to the workplace.

Serious incidents must be notified to the work, health and safety regulator, and an investigation could be undertaken by the regulator. This could result in a prosecution and conviction, with a business looking at the possibility of facing large fines.

IU: Which is more important: signage or physical barriers?

I don’t think the conversation should be limited to just those two options, there are always a range of other options

such as loading and unloading bays, parking areas and pedestrian crossings.

It is also important to consider procedures such as reversing, manoeuvring, turning blind corners and negotiating bottlenecks.

The guide lists four major steps: find out what could cause harm, assess the risk, take action to control the risk, and check your control measures.

The guide also gives examples of traffic control measures, including overhead walkways, permanent high-impact and low-impact barriers, temporary barriers, and walkways marked by painted lines and bollards.

Each of these must be “fit for purpose”, and each has up-front and ongoing costs, and provides greater or lesser protection from accidents.

In addition, administrative controls (such as scheduling delivery times and

installing warning signs) and personal protective equipment (such as hi-viz clothing) can be used in conjunction with all of these.

The guide makes it clear that operators of facilities need to consider all possible control measures and decide on those that are “reasonably practicable”, while acknowledging cost constraints.

The bad news is that this lack of specific direction appears to have led many Australian companies to take a least-cost approach to workplace traffic management – an approach that still leaves the workforce in danger.

Because while painted lines and temporary barriers do provide a visual cue for segregation of vehicles and pedestrians, they really don’t provide any protection against a runaway forklift.

In part two of this series we’ll take a closer look at the use of traffic barriers.

However, to provide an answer to that question, it depends on the specific risk you’re trying to control.

Where attempting to provide separation between pedestrians that are in the vicinity of moving plant then physical barriers will always be the preferred option. They should by no means be the only control, as control measures should consider safe operating procedures that include associated controls as pedestrians can always cross or walk around barriers.

If you’re trying to implement or indicate a speed limit for areas where there is only mobile plant, then physical separation may not be as important and

signage may play a greater role. When trying to implement a “Driver safe zone” both physical separation and some signage to identify the zone for drivers not familiar with the site can play an important part.

Powder Handling In today's world, workplaces, schools, shopping malls, or anywhere that people gather, can come under threat or have a medical emergency.

Most emergency alert systems are designed to provide for fire evacuations using sirens. But all too often, when a siren sounds in a public place, most people don’t know what it means, what they are meant to do or where they need to go.

DIRECT DRIVE FANS PROVIDE MAXIMUM AIRFLOW & CONTROL industrial HVLS fans will have a speed range from 20 to 50 RPM, the Japanese designed variable speed drive used in the Mammoth fans enables speed control from 5 to 57 RPM, allowing greater control over the airflow and hence the comfort level.

The controller is a wall-mounted unit that provides manual control of the fan speed and displays power consumption in real time.

The Mammoth Fans range comprises two models for commercial premises, sized at 3 and 4.2m, and two industrial models, at 5.5 and 7.3m diameters. All models run from single-phase 240V supplies.

MAINSTAY OF MANUFACTURING CELEBRATES THREE SCORE AND TEN Headland Machinery has celebrated its 70th anniversary as a mainstay of Australian manufacturing. The commemorative event was combined with the company’s annual Oktoberfest celebration, attended by many representatives from manufacturing industry as well as politicians from local, state, and federal government.

Joining the business and political dignitaries in the room was AMTIL CEO Shane Infanti, who articulated the exciting vision for the future of manufacturing in Australia.

Guests were taken through the story of Headland’s journey from a modest parts and machinery operation when the Kloe family first acquired it, to the leadingedge technology solutions company it has become today.

When the automotive assembly sector wound up in 2017, many people thought the Australian manufacturing story was dead and buried, but as the story of German migrant, Peter Kloe, indicates, it’s about to enjoy a resurgence.

When young toolmaker, Peter Kloe, finished his apprenticeship in 1956, he left Kassel in Germany for what young people today might call a ‘gap year’.

Hitchhiking and staying in youth hostels, Kloe wound his way through Switzerland, Italy, Greece, Turkey and France. It was in Cannes that he had a fateful meeting with a bunch of Americans, Canadians and Israelis who did some heavy spruiking for Australia.

After returning to Germany, Kloe made some cursory investigations and soon lodged some papers for Australian citizenship. In 1957 the young toolmaker arrived on Australia shores on the Flamingo with a glint in his eye and lint in his pockets.

There was no inkling that 50 years later, Peter Kloe might reflect on an amazing journey from the shop-floor to CEO, to a leader in Australia’s manufacturing sector.

And that the business he built with his wife Di, would then be inherited by his children, Richard and Annaliese.

“I went there with them once, but that was enough. I wanted to concentrate on getting ahead.”

Soon the lure of adventure tempted Kloe again, and after meeting and marrying Di in 1963, the couple headed overseas where Kloe would cut his teeth in the world of high-tech manufacturing and production methods.

Kloe set his sights on moving into production engineering and started going to night school. Two years later he went from the factory floor to the office floor, and henceforth began Peter Kloe’s ascent toward the commanding heights of Australian manufacturing.

The couple hitchhiked across Europe before settling in Germany for three years where Peter Kloe found work as a Product Engineer at engineering giant Siemens.

They then moved to North America for six years, with Kloe working as a production manager at Ford and Boeing.

Today, the technology on offer at Headland seems almost to belong to the realm of science fiction: 3D cutters and printers, machines that can make complex parts for steam engines in the time it takes to boil pasta, parts that materialise from dust and lasers, computerised vertical storage units.

Kloe saw great opportunities in Australia, but also something of a sleepy hollow.

Planning on building a family, the Kloes decided to return to Australia. In the back of Peter’s mind was a developing thought about bringing European and American manufacturing technology to Australia.

Headland sits at the leading edge of machine technology solutions, servicing such Australian and global giants as Siemens, Qantas, and Cochlear. More recently, under the stewardship of Peter and Di’s children, Richard and Annaliese, they have added information technology to the suit of products and undergone a significant growth phase.

Like Peter Kloe, Headland is very much a local product operating in a global environment. Headland’s service engineers are sent overseas for training, and return with full knowledge of the products and their capacities; a key component of Headland’s success.

The tradition of successful, multigenerational, migrant business families in Australia has some rich heritage. While the Kloes don’t have anything like the profile of a Myers or Smorgon family, their role in the manufacturing supply chain is significant and only appears set to grow.

The workplace culture then was not exactly to Kloe’s taste, notably how the lunchbreaks were sometimes spent.

Although Butko had been looking at a few other manufacturers, the Yawei Pressbrakes impressed immediately. As a result, Paul Butko purchased a PBH 630-6200 CNC5 and a PBH 300-4100 CNC7. The 630t pressbrake is for larger projects whereas the 300t machine provides intricate high-precision work.

The machines have made a good impression on the operators. “After a few months in use, we have found them to be solid, reliable and good to use,” says Paul Butko. “They are also very user friendly; and are value for money,” he adds.

With an average annual turnover today of $35 million, it is now the region’s largest general engineering company.

Born to Ukrainian immigrant parents, John Butko was apprenticed as a fitter and turner in Melbourne before returning to Wodonga and joining Milos Metrol & Sons. In 1972, Butko was named as Albury/Wodonga’s top apprentice. Soon afterwards, he rented a small shed in Kendall Street, Wodonga and invested heavily in machinery, including a lathe, guillotine and a set of rollers. And the rest is history.

Recent growth has come about as a result of working on larger projects throughout Australia (mostly the East Coast) and overseas (including the USA, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea).

Paul Butko, son of John, is the company’s Commercial Manager and has worked with the company for the past seven years. He previously worked for 5 years in construction with LendLease, which was excellent grounding for his current role in the business.

A true family business, Paul’s brother Michael is the Director/Engineering Manager who has been with Butko for the past 14 years.

“My parents and brother, along with the support and dedication of current and previous employees have done an amazing job to get the company where it is today; I can’t reinforce that enough,” says Paul Butko.

The company undertakes diverse projects including large structural steel, tanks, pipe spooling, conveyor systems, food/materials handling systems and pressure vessel work in either mild steel

or stainless steel.

“Our work is a 50/50 split between mild and stainless steel as well as a 50/50 split between fabrication and site installation,” Paul Butko explains. Tanks and pipes are the company’s forte and it also works with water, food production and dairy among other areas.

Butko prides itself on its one-stopshop service from design through 3D modelling to installation and ongoing maintenance. “This is our bread and butter,” says Paul Butko. “We work with clients from the beginning to end of a project, providing a sense of reassurance,” he adds.

When the company came to increase its work capacity and scope, the management had heard about Yawei Pressbrakes through a service contractor, who was performing maintenance on the existing equipment.

DOOSAN MACHINES EXCEED EXPECTATIONS Formerly known as Liberty OneSteel, InfraBuild's Workshop/Roll Shop in Mayfield NSW has recently installed three Doosan machines to increase productivity by reducing machining times. Andrew Norton checked them out.

According to Robert Fenwick, Superintendent REMS of the Workshop/Roll Shop, the three South Korean-made machines supplied by Hare & Forbes have performed better than expected and have proved to be excellent value, being priced well below competing Japanese machines.

Fenwick said that life cycle costs were considered over a ten-year operating period with the option to keep the machines longer before replacement. He also said that tooling life can be up to four times longer on the new machines, which makes investing in Doosan even better value.

Fenwick says the training and after sales service provided by Hare & Forbes is better than the competition and he particularly likes is the positive nature of the company, which doesn't criticise the competitors. He says that Hare & Forbes' Cameron Hart and Clive

Tallentine visited InfraBuild on many occasions and the Hare & Forbes CNC team completed in-house training on all three machines.

One example of the after sales service occurred when a part being machined in the Puma 2600 SY broke loose and shattered the laminated glass viewing window. Hare & Forbes arranged to fix the window immediately to reduce down time.

InfraBuild has set up computer monitors at workstations showing what the finished component should look like, with the raw material superimposed over it. Operators can see at a glance where raw material has to be machined to achieve the end result to enable CADCAM programming of the machines, together with standard conversational programming on the machines.

DNM5700 Apart from the safety factors inherent in the design of this machine, the main benefit has been the 12000rpm spindle speed. For example an 8mm diameter tool needs a spindle speed

metal shavings straight onto a chain-type swarf conveyor. These sloping walls make the machine easier to clean than the DNM 5700

Puma 2600 SY This machine was only three months old when I toured the InfraBuild workshop. of 8000rpm, which the DNM 5700 can handle easily, whereas the machine it has replaced had a spindle speed of only 3000 to 4000rpm. The DNM5700 is used for making tool parts from high carbon, high chromium steel blocks.

Certainly the finish of the parts I examined machined by the DNM 5700 was superb. I've seen plenty of machine parts, but the way the components fitted together was pure precision, helped by software programming that offers a 45 to 50 per cent improvement in accuracy over older machines. And of course the skill of the operator Greg, who has a feel for machinery and how it should operate.

One component InfraBuild added to the DNM 5700 was the optional coolant gun, which sprays a vegetable-based liquid (Hangsterfer's Machine tool coolant) on metal shavings to flush them towards augers, which feed a chain-type swarf conveyor. The swarf is then recycled. Robert Fenwick said using the vegetable based coolant was more expensive than other coolants but non-carcinogenic to safeguard the operators. The only complaint that Greg had was that compared with the old unguarded machines accessing the back of the machine to remove all the swarf was more of a task than before, although he appreciated the safety features built into the new Doosan machine.

Puma 5100 This machine skims rolls machined for Australian Tube Mills and with its heavy-duty design and overall rigidity increases tool life by more than two times while job time is reduced by 30 per cent. Tools can be changed easily and Fenwick said the machine is straightforward to program. As with the DNM 5700, the plastic covered programming screen is large and programming stages are easily seen.

The 2600 SY makes punches and dies for wire and fencing industries from hardened steels having a high carbon and chromium composition. The detail of the finished products has to be seen to be believed with perfect holes through machined blocks.

But one aspect of the 2600 SY I really liked was the ambient temperature thermal compensation of the machine. For example, on hot days the machined steel may expand slightly, which can affect the extremely fine tolerances required, while on cold days the steel may contract slightly, also affecting tolerances.

The 2600 SY can provide compensate for these variations within the machine to maintain tolerances: just another example of the thought that has gone into the design of Doosan machines.

Again like the 5100, the 2600 SY has sloping internal sides that in conjunction with the coolant gun fitted make removal of swarf very easy. Rob Fenwick said that programming the 2600 SY is easy and as with its counterparts and reduces set up times before machining runs.

Final words Of course no machine is any good without competent operators, and certainly the guys I met on the floor were dedicated to their work and have a feel for the machines, indicated by the sounds of the machines and the colour of the metal shavings. The workshop had an easygoing atmosphere and this was reflected in operators like Greg having spent most of their working life at InfraBuild. Robert Fenwick has been with the company 13 years and told me he has no desire to leave.

He also said that the biggest part of InfraBuild 's output is for the construction sector. Much of the tooling I viewed was for the rural markets and Waratah Fencing. In conjunction with other companies InfraBuild produces silos that come complete with engineers' reports on structural integrity, which can reduce insurance rates in the long term.

However the main outputs are long products in bar and coil, reinforcing products, spring steels and wires, wire for rope and other rural products.

WIRELESS GATEWAYS TAKE SENSOR DATA TO THE CLOUD

UNDERSTANDING INDUSTRIAL ETHERNET can vary across the site meaning that industrial devices must have a wide input range to cater for multiple power requirements.

Many Industrial Ethernet switches also often have redundant power inputs. This allows the weakest link (the power supply) to have a redundancy via a backup power supply, ensuring maximum up time.

Taking the Industrial Internet of Things into the cloud, Turck has released a series of universal wireless gateways specially designed for industrial automation.

The TCG20 Series gateways offer combinations of Wi-Fi and 3G cellular (UMTS) connectivity to help connect machines, plants and remote measuring points to automation networks.

Multiple interface options include serial RS232/RS485 ports, a CAN port and up to five Ethernet ports, with support for CANpen, Modbus TCP, Modbus RTU, OPC UA and Codesys network variables.

An integrated web server allows each gateway to be set up online at any time using easy graphical menus, and there is an Edge-PLC Editor to handle simple controller tasks and configure the data for transmission.

There are many different challenges in an industrial environment that standard commercial switches are not able to solve. Industrial Ethernet switches are designed for the harsh conditions and environments that are generally present in control networks, such as dust, dirt, vibrations, sweltering heat and freezing cold. Industrial switches don’t have the advantage of clean air-conditioned rooms and must be designed to operate in these extreme conditions.

In terms of functionality today, there is very little difference between an industrial switch and a commercial switch. Both are designed to pass IP traffic and provide a backbone for communication between the devices connected to them.

Industrial networks have different priorities when compared with a commercial network, which means that industrial switches need to be more robust, not just to the environment, but also when it comes to the transmitting data. An industrial network must prioritise the delivery of data to ensure that the control network, for example a mine or factory, is able to operate safely and to minimise any downtime.

Many legacy devices and protocols must also be integrated into modern control network and use multiple types of cable, including Ethernet fibre and even integrated serial ports.

Another unique feature of an industrial switch is the fact that most industrial switches are powered via DC. A typical industrial switch will operate between 12 and 48V DC, which

Communication is required in some extremely harsh environments, and an industrial switch must be able to not only withstand heat and dust, but do so without any moving parts, such as venting fans which reduce the mean time between failures of the device.

Industrial switches are built using components that can withstand temperatures ranging from -40 to +85˚C and are designed to last a lot longer than commercial switches, usually with MTBF figures calculated well over 10 years.

Unmanaged switches such as Hirschmann’s Spider range are meeting the harsh requirements of any industrial network, with plug-and-play technology built into the Spider III range for extremely fast installation and start-up and without any tools required.

Although there are many factors that separate industrial switches from commercial switches, the reality is that as things like the IoT and Industry 4.0 become more popular and more industrial networks are connected to the Internet, industrial switches and commercial switches are coming closer in terms of software, management and cybersecurity, while continuing to differentiate themselves to meet the requirements of their environment.

CRC Industries Australia has added seven leading Ados adhesives to its product portfolio. The Ados brand was founded in New Zealand 60 years ago and purchased by CRC in 1996.

CRC Stuff Off is a powerful adhesive remover designed to soften or dissolve most adhesives and paints as well as uncured laminating resins and uncured sealants. Finally, CRC MS Sealant is a highperformance single-component neutral curing adhesive sealant based on MS polymers. It has excellent primerless adhesion to all materials commonly used in the demanding building, construction and engineering industries.

Omron has expanded and improved its successful 1S servo range with further models designed to increase machine productivity and reduce downtime.

The new servos are easily tuned, with 2 degrees of freedom. And several servos can be tuned at once, meaning overall setup time has been reduced by 50 per cent.

New data from the International Federation of Robotics (IFR) show the global demand for industrial robots continuing apace, with 422,000 units shipped globally in 2018, amounting to a total value of US $1.6 billion in new orders. This level is slightly surprising given that the automotive and electronics manufacturing sectors remain the biggest users of industrial robots, and neither sector was particularly buoyant during 2018.

The new 1S series offers simplified machine design and maintenance. It is compact with a smaller motor size and can be easily mounted, with no external terminal rail needed.

Geographically, there remain five major markets for industrial robots: China, Japan, the USA, the Republic of Korea, and Germany. These countries account for 74% of global robot installations.

The new 1S range features a 23bit multi-turn absolute encoder with battery backup to ensure it retains position information when power is removed.

And cabinet size has been reduced.

The compact servo drive is the same height throughout the power range from 0.1 to 7.5kW.

The range comes with Omron’s exclusive Sysmac Studio programming software, which provides a full suite of integrated functions.

China remains the world´s largest industrial robot market with a share of 36% of total installations. In 2018, about 154,000 units were installed. This is 1% less than the previous year but more than the number of robots installed in Europe and the Americas together. The total value of installations reached US $5.4 billion – 21% higher than in 2017.

The original 1S servo (up to 3kW) has been expanded and is now available up to 15kW. Improved drive technology optimises the full cycle, through the machine design, installation and commissioning tasks and finally to the maintenance once in production.

In addition to the traditional motion solution, the 1S servo offers network-based safety (Safety over EtherCAT) as well as its standard hard-wired safety input. Loop control has also been improved for greater accuracy and higher machine productivity.

The servo can be easily connected to a controller via EtherCAT, with a 125μs communications cycle.

However, new growth markets are emerging. Sales of industrial robots in India reached a new record, with 4771 new units installed in 2018 - an increase of 39 per cent over the previous year. India now ranks eleventh worldwide in terms of annual installations.

The automotive industry remains the largest customer industry by far in India, with a share of 44 per cent of total installations. But the strongest growth driver in 2018 was general manufacturing industry, increasing by 28 per cent.

However, the nation remains relatively lightly automated. For example, the robot density in India’s automotive industry is a low 99 robots per 10,000 employees, compared with Indonesia (440 per 10,000), China (732), and the frontrunner Korea (2589).

Datalogic’s optical character recognition can read characters in trickier locations or on harder to read surfaces, such as the side of a metal housing, the VIN number on the frame of a car or the date/lot code on a package. The tool can be set up to read characters of different fonts or text that is slanted, slightly blurred or displayed on a noisy background.

Datalogic’s latest Impact software was designed with a focus on traceability and guidance, with upgrades to performance, ease of use and flexibility, to save time and improve productivity.

“Key customer advantages include swift and simple calibration, reducing learning and programming times and accurate robot guidance, all with full end-to-end traceability to ensure product quality and transparency,” says Weber.

Over the past 30 or so years I have seen some highly innovative and even world-class robotic solutions employed in Australian and NZ industry. And when you consider the size of our manufacturing industry the population of robots employed is pretty good compared with other developed nations.

The fact is that the modern industrial robot is ideally suited to the difficult manufacturing landscape that exists in our part of the world today even more so than 30 years ago. Low volumes, small batch sizes and ever-changing requirements are all in the robot DNA. Indeed, I have often thought that if robots had not already been invented elsewhere somebody down-under would have come up with the concept as it’s such a perfect fit for our industry. And here are ten good reasons why (in no particular order):

• Robots are highly flexible tools that can be adapted to ever-changing client requirements.

• There is a huge range of payload and reach options from which to choose.

• Today’s robots are really simple to program - virtually anybody can grasp the basics of robot programming.

• And that programming is so user friendly that end users can edit or change programs themselves if they choose to.

• Today’s communications options make it really easy for a robot to fit into an existing plant.

• Robots commonly have 50 thousand hours MTBF so are very reliable.

• And last but not least is price. You get a lot more robot nowadays for far less outlay, simply because of the sheer volumes the robot manufacturers produce.

Actually, the robot manufacturers look like they’ve really got it made. They use their own robots to make more robots, working 24 hours a day with minimal “thermal unit input” (human labour) and with no need to turn on either the lights or the heating!

That’s a business model we could all learn from. So if you haven’t yet got around to looking at what robots can do for your plant then now is as good a time as any.

AGVS GAIN THE FLEXIBILITY TO RULE THE WAREHOUSE

If there was ever a technology that has failed to live up to its potential in Australia, the Automatic Guided Vehicle or AGV is a prime case in point. Long-heralded as the next big thing in materials handling, AGVs have been proposed for years as the ideal alternative to fixed solutions such as conveyors.

But while programmable robots have successfully been deployed in countless manufacturing and materials handling applications, their mobile counterparts, the AGVs have failed to get traction.

But that is just about to change, according to Colin

Wells, MD of Robotic Automation, thanks to a new generation of AGVs that are every bit as flexible as their robot cousins.

“So much of Australian industry and logistics is based on flexible working that it’s not hard to see why the AGVs have been lagging the robots,” says Wells, whose company has been working with AGVs for 15 years.

“While robot manufacturers have invested in operating systems that allow the user to use one robot for multiple tasks, the majority of AGVs have been stuck in a single task environment, going from A to B to C over and over

again,” he explains. “And that’s no more flexible than the conveyors they’ve been put in to replace.”

The game-changer comes in the form of the Max control system that runs the new crop of AGVs from MAX AGV. The Swedish company produces a full range of AGVs, from a range of forklift types to carrier types and specialpurpose designs.

Max runs on a standard client server Windows environment, and being Windows based is user friendly and easy to configure. This means that any user can reprogram new tasks for an AGV without learning a whole new language.

It not only helps all the AGVs in a facility to keep track of each other and to assign the AGVs with new work tasks, it makes sure that loads are transported to the correct destination, at the right time and in the most efficient way.

Effectively, this MAX AGV software is a warehouse management system in its own right and can also control an automated storage and retrieval system if required.

Traditional surface-mount aerators are located in the body of water, meaning specialist equipment and skills and certifications, along with higher safety risks for operators.

Today, it's unlikely that you would see somebody going about their morning commute on a penny farthing. However, advancements in technology and the need for light, portable transport mean that the 19th century bicycle is making a comeback.

Could manufacturers learn a lesson from holding on to older technology?

The cyclopic is an electric, foldable bike that’s set to be the most compact on the market. The invention takes inspiration from the penny farthing. Its handles are fixed on the larger front wheel, and the back wheel folds inwards so the bike can fit into a portable bag that rolls along. The cyclopic is designed to offer users with a space-saving, lightweight solution to city travel.

While manufacturers don’t use equipment that has been around as long as the original penny farthing, most facilities do still rely on older equipment in their production lines.

As the first generation of factory automation comes to an end, the future of many control systems may seem bleak.

In fact, a 2019 survey carried out by Dell Technologies found that 91 per cent of midsize and larger organisations face major hurdles to digital transformation.

The notion that these organisations should scrap all their legacy systems in favour of new infrastructure is impractical.

Instead, manufacturers should consider how their existing equipment can connect to the Internet of Things (IoT).

same need.” Those are the words of Dick Morley, the father of the programmable logic controller (PLC) as he reflected on his invention, 40 years later.

When the PLC was invented in the late 1960s, it was built to give manufacturers better insight into their plants’ processes.

This need hasn’t changed very much in subsequent years. Real-time machine control is still a necessity, but the adoption of new technologies means that older PLCs may be lagging behind.

So, are these legacy systems destined for the scrap heap? Not necessarily, they just need to be able to monitor more processes.

If we consider the monitoring needs of a variety of industries, it is clear that each one has its own set of requirements. A water utility may be required to monitor the health of its phone lines to make sure they’re working in case of an emergency; while a packaging facility that uses injection moulding may need to retrieve data on the speed of its machines.

While control systems such as the PLC won’t be made redundant any time soon, their functions and capabilities will need to extend in order to manage these increased data requirements.

Smarten up Manufacturers may need some support to take their control systems into the future. Modern PLCs often come with an Ethernet interface, which older or less expensive systems do not have. Instead, many legacy systems adopt a sometimesbewildering range of serial communications and proprietary protocols that lack the interoperability most manufacturers require.

This can make any modifications that integrate add-on IoT connectivity

seem complex, but this does not mean it’s impossible. A convertor that can both interact with and extract sensor data from PLCs, and then communicate this data to external systems, could be employed.

The convertor acts as an IoT edge node that is able to communicate data to the cloud through an IoT gateway, which is particularly useful for PLCs with wiring constraints as it involves no interruption to functioning systems.

Connecting the unconnected Control systems are not the only pieces of legacy equipment that require an upgrade. If we think of a commonly found piece of automation equipment, such as a motor, the fundamentals of its technology have not changed over the last century. Motors are inherently simple, so it’s tempting to think that they operate without any major problems.

However, motors are extremely energyintensive and maintaining their efficiency is an important priority. To manage motor maintenance, smart sensors can be placed on the equipment to convert it into a connected device that reports on vibration, temperature and other characteristics that may signify unhealthy behaviour.

By enabling the predictive maintenance of hardware, manufacturers can plan maintenance according to the actual needs of the equipment, rather than fulfilling generic maintenance schedules. This extends equipment lifetime, meaning that it’s able to integrate into a smart factory without the risk of unplanned downtime due to breakdowns.

4.0 is dealing with the unique, one-off characterises of each legacy situation.

Manufacturers often have to work with dated (or no) documentation for older equipment and must be careful not to create new issues. If the legacy system uses an older communication protocol, care must be taken to avoid overloading the bandwidth or the processor.

Equipment obsolescence presents another challenge. As a natural consequence of continuous advancements in technology, obsolescence is impossible to eliminate completely and can lead to compatibility issues with new technologies.

This presents not immediate concerns for manufacturers that have a plan and strategy in place for how they wish to upgrade. But, in cases where equipment breaks down, manufacturers may feel they have no choice but to purchase a new, expensive alternative.

This solution would undo all efforts to migrate existing systems towards Industry 4.0, lead to extensive downtime and require the retraining of staff on how to use this new piece of equipment. Instead, manufacturers should prepare to continue the legacy of obsolete equipment by building a relationship with a reliable parts supplier who can source and send obsolete equipment so that a facility can continue to enjoy the benefits of retrofitting.

While the thought of riding a penny farthing might seem to belong in the past, its electrified reinvention with the cyclopic demonstrates that older technologies needn’t be left behind.

When planning a facility’s Industry 4.0 strategy, it’s easy to get caught up in the idea that control systems need a complete upgrade to keep pace. However, it is possible to teach old equipment new tricks, and investing in technologies that can convert older equipment into intelligent devices will help bring any plant up to speed.

SHOPPING TROLLEY CASTORS HAVE SUSTAINABLE DESIGN A shopping trolley covers thousands of kilometres in the 10 or so years of its service life, so its castors are subject to significant wear and tear. When carrying out necessary maintenance, the aim should always be to conserve valuable resources and reduce the burden on the environment. So Tente has developed a castor design that enables worn or damaged parts to be replaced – a sustainable design that reduces costs.

ShopBox Group of Heilbronn, near Stuttgart, Germany specialises in the maintenance and repair of shopping trolleys, serving supermarkets in 10 European countries. Its employees maintain and repair soiled grids, jammed child seats and, of course, wheels that shudder, jam or head in the wrong direction.

There are more than 20 million shopping trolleys in use in Germany alone, all of which require regular maintenance.

When designing wheels, it is important to focus on environmental factors and how resources are used.

Usually, a trolley’s wheels and forks are riveted together, making it impossible to continue to use the remaining intact components if just one part of the unit is defective. But replacing the whole castor is necessary only in about 30 per cent of cases. In the remaining 70 per cent it is only really the wheel that needs to be replaced.

If a wheel needs replacing but the fork is riveted to the wheel, then there is no alternative than to dispose of the fork along with the wheel. This results in unnecessary waste, the loss of resources and increased costs. The alternative is to use castors made by Tente.

ON A ROLL – QUIETLY Elsewhere in supermarkets, and in the warehouses that supply them, employees move stock on rolling containers that can soon become very noisy, not only for the employees, but also for shoppers and the public.

When deliveries are made at night or early in the morning, the noise of containers – loaded or empty, and moving on uneven surfaces – often leads to complaints from local residents. Noise is not only a nuisance, but also has a harmful effect on health: exposure to noise of more than 50dB can increase the risk of developing high blood pressure and cardiovascular problems.

Logistics specialist Gebhardt Logistic Solutions, based in the German town of Cham, near the Czech border, has been a family business for six generations and 185 years, and now employs about 500 people at five production sites worldwide.

It has established itself as a market leader in warehousing and transport solutions, developing and producing efficient logistic solutions for supermarkets, hotels and restaurants.

The company does everything that it can to reduce noise, including insulating and suspending the containers’ base plates, using stretch film when attaching the goods to be transported, and using low-noise Duratech wheels from Tente.

This combination of materials results in significantly reduced noise emissions – 10dB quieter than comparable wheels, which sounds like half the volume.

This enables ShopBox to replace the components separately. If only the wheel is damaged, the fork can still be used.

Duratech wheels are also designed for stability and durability, and have been extensively tested to prove it. For example, heavily loaded roll containers are pushed over thresholds and obstacles, and have forklift trucks bump into them. The wheels also have to withstand cold and heat, dirt and rainwater, and show no signs of weakness even in snow.

As a result, they have a service life more than twice that of comparable products, which are used for an average of only two years. In contrast, Duratech low-noise wheels are often used for up to five years, saving costs both in purchasing and maintenance.

The bolted connection offers further advantages, for example, when attaching the fork to the shopping trolley. Because the fork is not riveted to the wheel, it allows easier access for fixing. The wheel and fork can also be cleaned more easily when separated, as the dirty areas are easier to reach.

CRANE ENGINEERS ARE UP FOR A CHALLENGE Nonstandard appears to have become the new standard for Bomac Engineering.

Indeed, according to Bomac engineer Tate McFarlane: “We find we’re getting more and more requests for non-standard layouts for our Altrac cranes and fall arrest systems. Either that, or it’s customers who know what they want to move but aren’t sure about the best way to go about doing it,” he adds.

While, of course, the team is more than happy to provide stock-standard jib cranes and H-shaped gantry cranes,

the engineers do enjoy working through challenges where these standard designs just don’t quite work.

Engineers Tate McFarlane and Victor Lim have recently set their creative minds to solving some unusual customer requests. These have included an inverted gantry crane that will sit 8m off the ground, driven by remote-controlled motorised trolleys. And there has been a fall arrest system featuring a dizzying array of nonstandard bends to suit some seriously modern architecture.

CASTORS HAVE GREAT THINGS IN STORE The design of displays in department stores is determined by a range of factors, notably the space available, flexibility and durability.

For world-famous UK-based retailer Marks & Spencer Group it is important that the retail spaces in its stores are designed in a highly flexible manner, while making optimal use of the space.

Added to this, special promotions for occasions such as Christmas, Easter and Valentine’s Day require varying levels of space in the stores. So M&S needs the flexibility to allow merchandise to be quickly and easily rearranged, added to or reduced at any time, in any section and any department.

Gondolas and shelves, racks and rails, displays and stands are moved regularly, and each of these display pieces needs to last for five to seven years. So the company needed a compact castor that could be easily integrated into the display equipment and yet was extremely durable.

Thirdly, there will be more mobile malware attacks. This malware can steal payment data, credentials and funds from victims’ bank accounts, and new versions are available for widespread distribution by anyone that’s willing to pay the malware’s developers.

Check Point Software Technologies has come up with its list of cyber security predictions for the coming year. Here are some of the highlights (or should that be lowlights).

First, there will be an increase in targeted ransomware. Attackers are spending more time gathering intelligence on their victims, to ensure they can inflict maximum disruption, and ransoms are scaled up accordingly.

Secondly, phishing attacks will go beyond email. Increasingly, phishing involves SMS texting attacks against mobiles, or use of messaging on social

Fourthly, there will be an increase in cyber insurance. More cyber-insurance policies will be bought by businesses and public-sector organisations. However, this may well be counter-productive.

Insurance companies will continue to guide their policyholders to pay ransoms, as this can be cheaper than the costs of recovering from an attack. This will in turn drive more attacks, and fast growth for the cyber insurance industry.

The main message, though, is that today’s hyper-connected world creates more opportunities for cyber criminals, and every IT (and OT) environment is a potential target: on-premise networks, cloud, mobile, and IoT devices.

“Oxygen and gas have a big role to play in creating the sensory profile of wine, including the aromas, structure and colour, and can be the difference between a good and a bad wine,” says Daniel Malki, General Manager, Jet Technologies.

ATOMISING SPRAY NOZZLES INDUCTIVE AND PHOTOELECTRIC SENSORS STOP WITHOUT DRIPS FOR INDUSTRY 4.0 When spraying any type of liquid, post-spray liquid flow can cause big problems. Unwanted drips can ruin product function on sealing or mating surfaces and ruin the appearance of painted or coated finishes. LATERAL THINKING LEADS TO NOVEL HYBRID LINEAR SYSTEM When used in applications such as sliding doors, monitors or even panels, linear systems need to be able to cope with forces lateral to the intended movement. A novel linear system developed by igus and available from Treotham Automation incorporates hybrid bearings that provide low-friction adjustment with polymer rollers and tribopolymer slide elements.

When combined with an easy-to-fit rail adapted to the new roller bearings, this hybrid linear system offers a cost-effective and visually appealing solution.

Igus drylin linear guides have been widely used in packaging machinery, furniture and even in machine tools. On tribologically optimised liners, the linear carriages slide on the rail, ensuring precise and long-lasting adjustment.

In cases where a low driving force is required for manual adjustments, rollers are used in the bearing element.

However, where lateral forces are present, the position of the rollers for the force absorption is crucial. The new hybrid roller bearings overcome this, providing smooth adjustment with low drive forces and maximum support at the same time.

There are two versions: the WJRM41-10 has two offset polymer rollers with optimised alignment for better force absorption and easier rolling. The WJRM-

31-10 has a single roller, matching the supporting bearing on the opposite side.

By using the two roller bearings, the user can minimise the coefficient of friction by half and increase the service life of the application.

Both bearings incorporate sliding elements made from iglidur J low-friction tribopolymer, which provides lubricationfree and maintenance-free operation.

With the addition of a top plate, the two new roller bearings can be expanded to a linear carriage. And igus has developed a new low-profile hybrid roller rail to accommodate this with a special geometry optimised for the hybrid roller bearing.

The rail has a simple design without visible holes and can be attached from the back with sliding blocks.
