editor’s NOTE

When my father turned forty, we threw him a tongue-in-cheek funeral themed party, deck the living room with memorabilia. We laughed and laughed about it – forty back then was older than forty today. In today’s world, we’re always on the hunt of “someone young and hungry.” The connotation is lucid: if you aren’t young, you probably have very little to contribute. To be young and to make life really count is tougher than it sounds. To start with, one needs to get up from the slumber of stagnation. Productivity and creativity aside, one also needs a strong commitment to shoring up to the next level. Young Entrepreneurs in this stage are supremely motivated not just for themselves, but for others. The below-40 crowd is more likely to do work that matters not just for themselves, but also future generations. For example, Mark Zuckerberg, 33, the richest tech billionaire under 40, has pledged to give away 99 percent of his earnings on behalf of The Giving Pledge. Airbnb co-founders – Joe Gebbia, Brian Chesky and Nathan Blecharczyk, have pledged to donate wealth to the U.S. Philanthropy project. In learning about these inspiring entrepreneurs, it’s easy to see why young billionaires have more innovation potential to do what really matters.

Work from your place u s i n g Fa c e b o o k Workplace Facebook has incredibly changed our lives! By creating a virtual world, we have forgotten what is real and what isn’t. Facebook has been our friend in leisure, stress, sadness and when not! Last year, Facebook Inc. came out with something that was strictly business. You may call it something like a Facebook, but it helps keeping everyone in the office on the same page and constantly connected. But what needs to be noted is that Facebook is not the only one to come ahead with service for workplace communication. We have had Slack, Microsoft Atlassian and Asana.

Slow and steady wins the race!

Although it’s just been a year, Workplace is received quite well in some companies. It is considered to be an enterprise specifically for business organizations to communicate with their co-workers. Initially there were 1,000 businesses making use of this service. Opposed to that, Workplace now works across 30,000 businesses houses. Workplace comes forth as a collaboration programme that links

everyone in the company. A lot of Facebook Inc. products have fizzled out and so Facebook no longer works on it. But since Facebook Inc. is working to build new features it tells us that it ain’t faring that bad after all. The fact that they released new updates shows that Facebook is taking the enterprise world by a storm, even though it did not get the proper boost initially.

What’s New?

The new features that have been added to the already existing service are screen sharing and a desktop app for chatting- for Mac and Windows users. The app is a good thought because this will not waste time of the workers opening and closing the browser. The user-interface is quite similar to that of facebook messenger, making it easier for everyone to stay connected at all times. It is also said that Facebook Workplace will have group video chats/ conversations. This step makes it look like Workplace is ready to cross paths with Google’s Hangout. So who says work can’t be fun. Facebook Inc. is all set to step in and help you with your work, not just your leisure time. Although it started off on a slow note, Facebook Workplace does seem promising enough to be taken seriously by the business world. It is already 30,000 businesses strong but still needs that push to bring it into the mainstream market.

Apple acquires PowerbyProxi for an undisclosed amount Apple Inc. acquires PowerbyProxi and hits the nail right in the coffin. It seems that the company is planning to spice things up. Apple finally announced its acquisition of the New Zealand based company on Wednesday. Founded in 2007, PowerbyProxi is considered the world leading wireless power center. PowerbyProxi is into designing and developing highly efficient high density wireless power technology. Proxi-Module is a modular wireless power system developed by PowerbyProxi. It is built to adapt and integrate an ample array of products, delivering around 100 watts of power. It could even power a drone. The acquisition denotes that the multinational technology company is working on solutions for high-power for their larger devices. They include Mac and iPad. The module is still believed to be in the initial stage. Hence the charger won’t be making it into the market anytime soon.

Apple acquires PowerbyProxi for more Qi

PowerbyProxi too has been working on developing Qi wireless charging. It has received a lot of recognition and funds for the work. The project was Wireless Power Consortium’s future technology. Apple too has been a member of the Wireless Power Consortium since the February of 2017. Apple, just recently introduced wireless charging with the launching of iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone

X. The latest line-up made use of technology which is based on Qi. It is also known that Apple is planning to release a charging mat. The product is named AirPower that promises to simultaneously charge AirPods, iPhone and the Apple Watch.

The Big talk

Financial details of the deal are yet to be disclosed by PowerbyProxi. The multinational company does not usually allow the acquired company to continue with their own sales. Beats Electronics, a subsidiary of Apple Inc. is an exception. But it’s too early to know whether Apple will allow them to continue with their independent sales. It still sells its speakers independently. Neither Dan Riccio nor Fady Mishriki delved into the details of the intentions and further plans. Nor was it specified how Apple Inc. is going to make use of the technology from PowerbyProxi. But one thing is for sure, ‘iFans’ can expect big stuff after Apple Inc. acquires PowerbyProxi.

Pixel 2 XL’s Burn Had Heads Just Turn The new Google Pixel 2 XL got all the gadget geeks do their research thoroughly and make up their minds whether they’d want to get it. With a larger screen space and an impressive camera, the phone seemed faultless at first. The phone being waterproof was like an additional perk. The phone boasts of a unique lens feature which helps you learn about your surroundings making use of Google’s search database. Within a week of its release, people already had issues with the display. For a mobile so recent in the market, Google seems to have blundered big time. Google is under fire for the growing numbers of legal as well as regulatory setbacks. This particular Pixel issue has the company biting its nails off. The phone already had customers not being satisfied about its display. Extensive discussions have taken place on the issue of grainy texture and the blue tint on the screen. But the new issue is something more than just that.

Pixel 2 XL BURNNN

The new phone in town seems to have the burn-in issue cropping up and this is just within a week of its release. Although not an uncommon occurring in OLED phones, these issues crop up after a sufficient amount of time. But since this has happened in a week, it has raised a lot of eyes.

Technowize Magazine | November 2017

017

Say What?

Alex Dobie from AndroidCentral posted a picture of Google Pixel 2 XL on his Twitter account. It showed the navigation keys on the screen even when it was not required to. His tweet was “That’s some pretty wild OLED burn-in on the Pixel 2 XL after maybe 7 days of full time use.” What seemed to be an isolated incident was not really the case. Tim Schiesser from Hardware Unboxed and TechSpot, experienced a similar issue with his Pixel 2 XL. A spokesperson from Google claims to be looking into the issue. He also claimed that all the units were put under ‘extensive quality testing’ before the handsets were launched into the market. Google has promised to actively look into the situation. It is unclear about how long they will take to come out with a solution for it. Even though OLED and P-OLED screen are known to have burn-in issues, not all the handsets are prone to get it. It is alleged that the P-OLED display was provided to the Google Pixel 2 XL by LG. A similar issue was there with Samsung phones as well. The pixel shift technique solved the issues in their Galaxy S8 and S8+ phones. It is not certain whether Google has made use of this technology or not. Technowize Magazine | November 2017

Why is facial recognition such a big deal for Apple? Just like every year, even this year was filled with speculations about the next iPhone. It was made an even bigger deal as this year marked the 10-year anniversary of the flagship phone. Along with this came the announcement that the usual fingerprint sensor of the phone will be replaced with facial recognition software. There was a lot of hue and cry about the same as Apple was finally updating its recognition medium. What is surprising is that this kind of technology is prevalent since a long time. Yet the excitement for it is undeniable just because the tech giant Apple Inc. is finally offering it. Is this a sign that technology will become acceptable only if a tech giant supports it? Taking facts into consideration, the concept of facial recognition came out in the late 19th century. It became a popular method of verification for government bodies in particular. After almost two decades of its invention, Apple has announced that all its future iPhones after the iPhone X will use this form of recognition software. Apple fans have expressed their excitement about the same but it seems that Apple is slightly late in adopting this technology, just like OLED displays and foldable phones. Facial recognition may be just another selling point. iPhone tops the list of the most popular smartphones on a global scale. Technowize Magazine | November 2017

019

People often wonder what is the reason behind its high popularity and prices. There is no denying the fact that Apple’s flagship phone comes with a high quality of technical features. The only drawback is that the tech giant is slightly late in adopting the technology. By the time Apple introduces a certain feature in its iPhone, a cheaper version of the same is already available in the market. This affects the smartphone’s sale drastically. After the launch of the iPhone X, Apple has made it clear that none of its phones in future will have the Touch ID. This means that now onwards all iPhones will come with facial recognition. This announcement is despite the fact that there are reports popping up about issues faced by the users due to this feature. It seems that Apple is keen on making facial recognition a mainstream affair in a smartphone. This is an indication that it is time technology becomes so advanced that even unlocking a smartphone will be hands-free.

Movies Anywhere may have followers everywhere ‘Free’, a word that draws eyes and excites us all. Add that before ‘movies’ and we get the drools from movie buffs. Every film enthusiast knows how important their film libraries are. They also know how painful it can get to open different accounts to check and select from their film list. Movies Anywhere app seems to promise to bridge that gap.

What’s the buzz all about?

Movies Anywhere is a Disney initiative and the first Hollywood studio that came up with the concept of a ‘digital movie locker’. This free app is a must-download to bring all your favorite films strewn over different digital retailers, to one common platform. The app’s name explains itself as it allows you to carry your prized collection with you, anywhere you go to.

Partners in Crime:

The free app and the digital locker is backed with contents from the giants in Hollywood- Walt Disney, Sony Pictures Entertainment, 20th Century Fox Film, Universal Pictures and Warner Brothers Entertainment. Fans of Iron Man and Hunger Games might need to hold their breath for a little longer as talks are still going on with Paramount and Lionsgate who are not a part of this collaboration yet. Technowize Magazine | November 2017

022

The app allows a total of 7,300 films that one can search through and is available to iOS, Android and Roku users. Movie enthusiasts will be able to link their Amazon Video, Vudu, Google Play and iTunes accounts to this app. Although it looks like a cake walk, what is to be seen, is how user-friendly they make their app. The app is directed at sweeping away the trouble of going through different digital shelves just to find the right film for your mood. Imagine going through all the films you have stacked up in different accounts, by the time you open and shut through the various shelves, your buzz gets killed. This app aims to help you from wasting all that time by serving it all to you in one hub. The app -if it hits the right pulse- could be a cherry on the icing for all those who have stored films on different platforms. An additional surprise is that it allows you to search for new films. If you wish to buy them, it redirects you to the payment page of the digital retailer company. So no longer does one have to search for a film on different sites. Movies Anywhere does it all here. The app also allows you to switch onto different sites. Despite this, it will resume from where you left it last. It caters to a variety of movie enthusiasts. These can be adults, children, crime and mystery lovers, fantasy followers, and the list goes on. Hollywood has always been audience-friendly and spares no expenses in entertaining them. If the app is a success, it is sure to have a lot of people on board. With the searching activity made more convenient and user-friendly, Movies Anywhere could end up having users everywhere.

AI makes homes a safer place to live in While browsing through the internet, I reached a page which talked about various age old cultures in different parts of the world. When we talk about cultures, it is usually about the language, dress sense, or lifestyle of people belonging to a particular region or community. But I came across a culture which is related to the safety of people of a particular village. Shani Shingnapur is a village residing in the Maharashtra state in the country of India. The cultural custom over here is such that for more than 300 years, the residents of this place have maintained the tradition of not putting locks or even doors on their houses. They believe that their God will protect them from any harm. It seems like such a distant reality for us living in the urban ruckus where even a weekend away requires rigorous locking of all parts of the house and notifying the neighbors to keep an eye on the house. Despite all these efforts, a part of mind is occupied with whether our home and the valuables inside are safe or not. Technology being the absolute boon that it is, it also successfully gives us a peace of mind. We live in a decade which is majorly controlled by artificial intelligence. help of this technology. AI is considered to be a potential threat to the human race in the years to come. But currently, we are making the most of the advantages of this technology. Artificial intelligence gained popularity due to the kind of convenience it offered to the users. Coming to controlling the surroundings of an individual, this is most beneficial in keeping tabs of the safety of one’s home. It not only keeps you safe when inside the home but also keeps the house safe when you are way. You can be a watchdog for your house from any part of the world thanks to artificial intelligence. This also helps in being focused at work or enjoying a trip with a free mind.

Smart cameras keep an eye for you If thought of on a general note, any kind of smart technology ensures a safer system than the usual technology which we were accustomed to using a few years back. For example, mobile phones earlier had just a lock button which could be opened by all. Then came the smartphone with the pin-based password. Even in this, one could unlock it if he knew the correct pin. Smart technology enabled taking the safety level of one’s gadget a notch higher. This was made possible by introducing the fingerprint or face ID sensor. Such a safety measure is any day more efficient than the previous ones we had. Just like smart technology can ensure better safety of our devices even in terms of privacy, it has helped in making our homes safer as well. You can survive without your smartphone or a laptop, but not without a shelter covering your head. As smart devices offered convenience, we humans got used to them. After getting over the attractiveness of this technology, we began realizing how useful they are as well. Smart technology taking its reference from artificial intelligence is not only making our homes smarter, but also safer. In terms of security, smart cameras are the most useful among the lot of other such devices. This is because they are almost as good as omnipresent. This means that these cameras can keep an eye on your home for you when you can’t. The difference between

the usual CCTVs and smart cameras is that smart cameras not only record the footage but also notify you about the same on a constant basis. There have been cases wherein the CCTV recorded a certain event but its clarity was so poor that it was useless as legal evidence. Whereas the smart cameras have 1080p clarity which actually serves the purpose of keeping tracks of an incident and that too in proper detail. CCTVs could store this footage for a definite number of days. Smart cameras automatically upload the data in your cloud which will stay there for an indefinite period and you can also have access to it from wherever you are. It also comes with compatible apps that sync the smart camera to your smartphone. Practically speaking, it is impossible to keep an eye on the footage for hours at an end. This is where artificial intelligence proves to be beneficial. This technology detects whether something apart from the usual happens and notifies the user about the same. There are cameras which can detect a human figure in certain parts of the house and alerts the owner.

Instruct your house to keep it safe When we talk about smart speakers in our homes, we are generally appealed by the fancy features it offers such as following orders to fulfilling your demands by simply calling out the voice assistant. By doing so, it acts as a central hub of the entire smart system with the help of which you can control all your other smart home appliances in a convenient manner. This synchronization is possible by having a specific smart system for the purpose. If you don’t wish to spend money on it, you can also connect your voice assistant to smart devices individually. This is the ideal solution to automate your home on an overall note and also ensure its safety at the same time.

SPOTTING

Your smartphone can control everything, even your home’s lock The best piece of technology to make sure that your home is safe at all times is the smart lock. Such locks come with a number of security benefits for your home. The biggest advantage of this is that you no more need to worry about losing or misplacing the house keys. In case it gets stolen, we need to change the locks. All this can be avoided as our smartphone is something which is with us at all times. Also, there are times wherein you get stuck in traffic on a weekend and your friend is waiting at the doorstep for you. At such a time, you can give one-time access through your friend on the smart lock which will let him into the house. In case you are unsure whether you locked the door properly while leaving, you can lock it once again on a remote basis as well. This makes it almost impossible for the thieves to break into your house with the help of a magic key.

immediately dismiss water to put out fire. The water would be all over the place and is at times not enough to put out a big fire. In such a situation, you need to start looking for the origin of the fire drenched in water once the alarm goes off. There is a smart solution to this as well. Smart smoke detectors are available in the market which is connected to your smartphone like other such devices. In case you aren’t at home and the alarm goes off, it will notify you on your phone so that you can call the fire brigade before it’s too late. It will also pinpoint the exact location from where the smoke is originating. Due to the abundance of technological innovations taking place on a regular basis, we are keen to try every new device and make our lives easier. In the case of artificial intelligence devices, they are the most appealing of them all. But it’s time we realize that this technology can be used for a specific purpose instead of just entertainment. Safety of our homes is a major concern and AI-enabled devices aim to curb the tension about the same.

Mark Zuckerberg Net worth: $71.1 billion USD How he made his billions: Facebook, Inc. Location: Palo Alto, California Age: 33 At an age where Millennials are buried in student debt and tepid income growth, some have already made some serious moolah. At the age of thirty three, chairman and chief executive of Facebook, Inc., Mark Zuckerberg has achieved more than any of us could ever dream of in one lifetime. The Facebook.com co-founder became a billionaire in 2008 at age 23. Facebook’s IPO made Zuckerberg the ‘youngest self-made billionaire’ in history until the title was snagged up by Snapchat cofounder Evan Spiegel five years later. We looked at Zuckerberg’s net worth and found that he remains atop the list of the richest individuals under 40. Technowize Magazine | November 2017

The “hoodie” clad programming prodigy launched “thefacebook.com” from his Harvard dorm room on February 4, 2005. He was just 19 at the time and “didn’t know much about business back then.” The wonderkid turned down million dollar offers from AOL, Bill Gates, and even MTV. The Harvard-based social network is now used by more than two billion users worldwide. Despite a harrowing performance of the company’s IPO in 2012, each share has now risen more than 100 percent in the past couple of years. Mark Zuckerberg is an immensely talented strategist, and he keeps acquiring companies that continue their operation under Facebook, Inc. Some of his power purchases include WhatsApp at $19 billion, Instagram at $1 billion, and Oculus Rift for $2 billion. On the philanthropy front, Mark Zuckerberg continues to remain active using FWD.us to campaign for immigration reform and advancements in science and technology education.

Dustin Moskovitz Net worth: $13.6 billion USD How he made his billions: Facebook, Inc., Asana Good Ventures Location: Palo Alto, California Age: 33 As “thefacebook.com” started to grow, Mark Zuckerberg brought in fellow Harvard students Dustin Moskovitz and Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum, and Chris Hughes as cofounders to springboard the website into a social behemoth. What’s remarkable about Moskovitz from all the other cofounders is that he learned programming in just a couple of days to help Zuckerberg do the expansion. Facebook’s first CTO also dropped out of the Ivy League school after moving to Palo Alto, California, to work on the social network full-time. In 2008, Moskovitz left Facebook, Inc., with enough equity to make him one of the world’s youngest billionaires. A year later, he co-founded Asana with Justin Rosenstein, a former product manager at Technowize Magazine | November 2017

Google and Facebook. The earliest iterations of Asana were actually developed as a task management software aimed to foster effective collaboration between coworkers. The app has revolutionized communication itself by becoming a centralized management tool. It is free for unlimited teams of 15 within an organization, and $10/ user per month above that. Asana doesn’t disclose user or revenue numbers, although the founders say its users have created about 45 million tasks and completed about 22 million of them. Dustin Moskovitz believes the Facebook Mafia (the five co-founders) has played a monumental role in the fundamental shift towards idolization of entrepreneurship in the Valley.

Eduardo Saverin Net worth: $9.8 billion USD How he made his billions: Facebook, Inc., Self Made Location: Singapore Age: 33 Mark Zuckerberg jilted his co-founder Eduardo Saverin out of the company after trying to dilute his share to 10% without making it painfully apparent to him. Eventually, Saverin’s role was taken by entrepreneur Sean Parker, and the ousted co-founder went about his way but not before suing Zuckerberg for forcing him out of the company. Anyone who has seen The Social Network (2010) knows about Thefacebook.com’s tangled founding story, and how Facebook’s first investor and CFO eventually settled for a 5% stake of the company. We may never likely know how much Zuckerberg screwed over, as Saverin was offered an undisclosed amount and made to sign a non-disclosure as a part of the deal. Serial angel investor Eduardo Saverin now sits on board of 99.co, a Singapore-based real estate buying and selling platform. As a technology investor and mentor, he has advised and worked closely with an array of ambitious startups of all sizes and stages that share one common thread: a passion for people-centric innovation. Had Saverin kept his original stake in Facebook, he’d now be worth somewhere near $35 billion. What a pity!

Evan Spiegel Net worth: $3.2 billion USD How he made his billions: Snapchat Location: Venice, Los Angeles, California. Age: 27 The Stanford dropout keeps adding feathers to his cap: the yet to be dethroned youngest billionaire in the United States is now the youngest CEO of a public company, Snap, the parent company of Snapchat. In 2013, the headstrong and necessarily arrogant entrepreneur famously turned down a $3 billion cash acquisition offer from Facebook that would have personally netted him $750 million. Much of his wealth is tied up in shares that fetched astronomical prices when Snap went public. Evan Spiegel’s net worth has yet to find a ceiling. The app - Snapchat, which allows users to send messages that disappear shortly after being opened has come to heavy influence and defined the way young people communicate, making it integral to advertisers and anyone else looking to monetize from Millennials and Gen Z-ers. Interestingly, the Silicon Valley billionaire is very concerned with privacy and likes to stay off the grid.

Unlike Evan Spiegel, Murphy has maintained a low profile since the beginning of the company. He has given only a handful of interviews, and little is known about his personal life. Before starting Snapchat, Murphy worked on a failed startup called Future Freshman, a website that gave high schoolers advice on college applications. To fund Snapchat’s quick user growth towards the end of 2012, Murphy used half of his pay check from Revel until they could secure venture capital funding. After joining Airbedandbreakfast.com as the third co-founder in 2008, Nathan took charge of creating a vision, strategy and growth within the company to bring about new ways of travelling. His purpose within the company has evolved over the years. At first he was the one writing code but later he was building the team, hiring new members, reviewing products and leaving the code writing to his team. Speaking at Skift Global Forum 2017, the Airbnb co-founder and chief strategy officer said an IPO is inevitable. Indeed, the AirBnb IPO will fasttrack the three co-founders position on the list of tech billionaires under 40.

Brian Chesky is the son of social worker parents who began his career as an industrial designer and strategist at 3DID, Inc., in Los Angeles. AirBnb started out smaller; Chesky and his school friend Joe Gebbia couldn’t afford to pay rent, so they let out airbeds and breakfast in their San Francisco to conference delegates. As the business became more prominent, so did Chesky. Today, AirBnb has changed the way we holiday – and is often seen as a competitor to major hotel chains all over the world. Chesky owns a 13% stake in Airbnb, and his personal net worth is $3.3 billion – landing him 7th on the list of world’s richest tech billionaires under 40. Apple design chief Jony Ive is a big fan of Airbnb CEO – he thinks the 33-year-old founder’s “audacity is fabulous.” With Airbnb, Chesky has helped create millions of personal connections that even the best hotels in the world should envy. In June 2016, Brian Chesky along with fellow co-founders Joe Gebbia and Nathan Blecharczyk joined the group of billionaires called “The Giving Pledge,” committing half of their fortune to charity. Nine years later, the Internet startup puts an estimated 850,000 people up every night in over two million listings in 190 countries. The bow-tie wearing co-founder and chief product officer of Airbnb had founded three businesses before founding one of the biggest tech companies in Silicon Valley – currently valued at $50 billion, slightly bigger than Marriott’s $39 valuation. An avid inventor (he has designed and patented buttox-shaped portable seat cushions called CritBuns), Gebbia helped drive Airbnb deeper into the most challenging markets, including Cuba and Africa. Most people would simply whine about the inconvenience, but Camp and Kalanick instead began brainstorming for ways to fix the problem. The pair had enough money in the world after selling startups to found one and were actively in the lookout for their next BIG idea. A year earlier, Camp sold his web startup StumbleUpon, a webcurating service to eBay for $75 million. Camp’s idea was to order a cab with the push of a button on your phone. Kalanick wasn’t entirely sure of, but decided to give it a go when he saw its potential after a few iterations. The rest is history. Personality wise, Garrett Camp is Steve Wozniak to Travis Kalanick’s Steve Jobs – except that Camp has a greater sense of what customers want and how to deliver it right. Garrett Camp has also co-founded incubator Expa, which has a whooping $50 million war chest to fund the next Uber.

When the entire Silicon Valley aims to build AI chips You have caught up on the current affairs of the world. News filled with politics, war, and crime is all that you read. Along with this, you feel that it is important to stay updated in terms of technology as it has become an integral part of our lives. In order to make sure that you can contribute to such tech savvy conversations in a social gathering, it’s time to read something about technology. Instead of opening the crisp Sunday paper, you unlock your tab to scroll through the news app. This in itself is a practical example of how important technology has become in our lives. You are going through various topics to read but a term keeps popping up way often than normal. The term is Artificial Intelligence. The concept of artificial intelligence is so popular that it

is thrown around in almost every conversation related to science and technology. The term rings a bell as this is what Apple and Google were talking about while elaborating upon their new devices. If we talk about artificial intelligence, it is basically a technological concept which has now been developed on an extensive note. In the form of software, this technology is installed in various kinds of devices. To make artificial intelligence function smoothly in a device, an AI chip is mandatory. An AI chip is an instrument which carries all the necessary data for the functioning of the AI software. Without it, it is impossible to install this software in any device. This can give us an idea about the importance of an AI chip. As the demand for artificial intelligence seems never-ending in this age, the production of AI chips is also equally important. A number of tech giants have understood this and are dedicatedly working on the same. As everyone wants to try a hand at it, it is inevitable that competition is also on the rise. In this race to produce the most efficient AI chips, tech companies big and small are already on the start line. Technowize Magazine | November 2017

075

When AI chips initially came out It is often believed that artificial intelligence is a novel concept of this decade. This is a case of misconception as the demand for AI increased in this decade but its inception took place around more than two decades ago. A researcher at Bell Labs, Yann LeCun built an AI chip in the year of 1992. At that time, the importance of this innovation was not understood. One of the major reasons behind this is the lack of knowledge about the same. Being an iconic R&D lab situated right outside New York City, LeCun had a team of efficient scientists to support him in this vision. This AI chip was designed in order to run deep neural networks. These networks are complex mathematical systems. The AI helps these systems learn tasks independently with the help of data analysis. This neural network worked well in certain cases but had its limitations. Despite this, the innovation sowed the seed of artificial intelligence which turned out to be useful after 25 years.

base, various tech companies are developing this AI chip even further. This development is done taking into consideration the demands of the present day and how artificial intelligence can enhance the experience their device would offer. As he is said to be the father of AI chips, LeCun currently heads the artificial intelligence lab at Facebook. LeCun confidently believes that such neural chips are the need of the hour and need to be worked upon on an immediate basis.

Using this neural network as a Technowize Magazine | November 2017

076

The importance of artificial intelligence discovered One may have noticed that in the past few years, artificial intelligence has become a growing trend in the technological sector. Keeping this in mind, tech giants are willingly investing in this field to make sure they lead the market. As artificial intelligence is software, people assume that it will gradually shut down any scope of hardware. What we fail to notice is no software can exist without the base of hardware in order to carry that information. In this scenario, an AI chip is the necessary hardware. This is why all companies of this field are hell bent on creating a niche as the best AI chip manufacturer in the business. Right from budding startups to well established giants, each and every organization is working upon it.

Companies like Google and Microsoft who have earned themselves a name in the tech business as pioneers of innovation with expertise are also forced to run in this race to retain their position. This is the time when the need to build an AI chip for almost every function in a device is high. Not only this, but an AI chip has the ability to carry out certain functions which would be possible by a huge manual workforce. For example, Google recently produced the TPU chip. It said that this chip could do the job which would usually take 15 extra data centers. This means that transfer of data from the source to the devices can be much smoother as it will cut down on the long route of first sending the data to the data centers and then transferring it to the respective devices. The delay of shuttling data can be eliminated thanks to these AI chips. Due to this, companies are jumping at the opportunity of creating AI chips because it not only cuts down on the overhead cost but also provides a more efficient solution to tech services.

Companies venturing into specialized AI chips Intel, the name which is considered the father of computer software, acquired a startup called Nirvana. This acquisition is in order to carry out the production of a chip which will only focus on machine learning. Similarly, IBM is working on hardware architecture which resembles the theory of neural network. Along the same lines, Qualcomm is busy developing chips based on LeCun’s exact principles of neural work. Facebook is doing the same with the help of LeCun himself. The foundation that was built 25 years ago is now undergoing development and that too at a rapid pace. Despite all these attempts, there is one organization that has the upper hand when it comes to production of AI chips. nVidia has earned itself a reputation in the Silicon Valley as the leader of this field. Its expertise in graphic processors (GPU) can easily crunch massive amount of data without any flaws. This GPU chip is mainly in charge of accelerating the training

stage. Once the device is well acquainted with the users’ needs and demands, all it has to do so follow instructions. GPUs are considered to be the best option for this task. GPUs do the job which usually needs an entire ecosystem for proper functioning. Following the trend, Apple Inc. may also soon produce AI chips on an independent note. It won’t be wrong to say that almost all tech devices use artificial intelligence. This functioning also takes place through AI chips. But till a few years back, not all these companies produced the hardware required for this technology. They usually handed over the work to another organization and later installed it in their devices. But looking at the need of the hour, companies have decided to take the development of AI chips in their own hands. This has resulted in a number of acquisitions in the Silicon Valley and will also prevent loopholes in technology that were earlier caused by data centers.

Is Social Media Dumbing us Down? Be on line with what’s going around you and not just online. We make use of the social networking sites on a daily basis. It brings to us new ideas and news from all across the globe. But it is also a fact that social media can never be trusted with whatever you read. We hate to admit that we too make use of the social networking sites more than we should but then at least we know (or we feel so) that we need to be more cautious than ever! Technology has taken over humans in a way that is shocking and mind-boggling. The internet then came into play and took over people’s lives in unimaginable ways. What is really freaky is how the young don’t know the difference between the real and virtual, usually thinking that they mean the same. The erosion of the real world is something that must really be the concern of our times. Technowize Magazine | November 2017

092

Language has gone for a toss, boss! The first thing that bothers us a lot is the language of the digital natives. The general internet culture has also had its effect on the English language, which breaks our heart. Social media has the effect of dumbing down people. We have heard instances where people have lost the art of talking and more so, talking elaborately and eloquently. Oh the charm of writing and receiving letters! The conversations online are really scarring, to say the least. There seems to be no such thing vowels in words. They are left upon the reader of the text to add them wherever required. So words like ‘text’ become ‘txt’ and ‘road become ‘rd’. This is just the beginning. Another thing that is amusing is how numbers become a smaller part of a bigger word. So forward becomes 4wrd and great becomes gr8. Let’s not discuss the acronyms they use for phrases. This affects children in their studies as well because they do not seem to know the real spelling at all. It is also sad how people no longer use their brains to come up with better usage of adjectives. Everything we see is ‘just awesome’ or ‘way sexy’ according to the social butterflies. What happened to coming up with words and sentences that have an uncanny yet an elegant flow. There is a lot that is circulated on the net these days. It is not uncommon to want to belong to a community. It is healthy in fact, to be a part of a group and indulge in conversations. But in all of this we must choose wisely about what we take in and Technowize Magazine | November 2017

what we communicate. A lot of debates and war of words that take place online should not be given the credibility they deserve because not everyone is an expert. Baseless arguments made online can be extremely harmful to consume. Technowize Magazine | November 2017

Dumber Ways to Die “Let’s take a selfie!” This phase is repeatedly used. Everyone wants to update their WhatsA pp, Facebook and Instagram stories. They yearn to join the rat-race. What they don’t realise is that they are being foolish enough to let people into their time and space. There is also the other kind of Selfie culture which instigates people to post dangerous selfies. And the persuasion of it has driven many people to fall to their own deaths. According to the Daily Caller, U.S ranks third in the number of deaths by selfie. Forbes states that most of the “killfie” take place on buildings, mountains and places with extreme heights. The second highest selfie deaths are the ones which are water related. Yes, it is good to keep up with the times but not everyone takes it in the way they should. Let’s take the game The Blue Whale for example. The Russian founder of the game specifically targeted youngsters who were vocal, in the wrong way, on social networking sites. He went through the posts of his would-be victims and targeted

Technowize Magazine | November 2017

095

those who had statuses and posts claiming they were depressed or fed up of life. We can understand you open up about your troubles so that people can help but there is a way to go about it. To those who want to be heard, go to people who actually care about you, are concerned and know how to help out. They are called parents, police and shrinks. The stupidity behind it all is that they either feel it’s cool to be vocal or they want attention. But what they fail to see is that there is someone out there looking at your vulnerabilities and waiting for the right time to pounce on you. When dealing with stressful situations and depression, announcing on social media is the most foolish thing to do. We are reminded of a saying which we will loosely translate- don’t share your troubles with everyone because 90% of the people won’t care and 10% of the people will be glad that you have them.

Be mobile. Not - in your mobile. “One key area that appears to have been affected is reflection”, states Marc Prensky in his write-up ‘Digital Natives, Digital Immigrants’. The net has gotten us into the habit of instant gratification. We no longer like to take time by going and reading up in the library. Also, once we get what we want, we don’t think about it and reflect over it, we move on to something else. Reading books (not digital, please), listening to music, sharing time with your parents and grandparents, talking with people face-to-face is something that goes a long way and teaches us more than what the online world has to offer. So keep that darned screen aside and go outside in the open, feel the fresh breeze and the warm sun. Play in the snow or just sit by the pond. This will help you think and ponder over things, make you ask questions, debate on various subjects and most importantly it will also help you think creatively and critically. Our words may not seem to make sense now, but, we quote a line from Boyzone’s song “It’s only words, and words are all I have...” We end by saying please choose to be discreet when online. Be careful and be wise, not otherwise.
