Environmental Solutions

OSHA puts a weld fume exposure limit or PEL (Permissible Exposure Limit) in place in order to provide a clean, comfortable and compliant welding environment. If the air quality in your welding environment exceeds the PEL (determined by an air sample taken by an industrial hygienist), certain control measures need to be taken to ensure compliance. The OSHA Hierarchy of Controls provides a step by step process for implementing control measures, ensuring workers’ comfort and compliance.

Fume Extraction

The second most effective level of control for air quality that OSHA recommends is engineering controls, or making a physical change to the workplace environment such as increased ventilation. Fume extraction equipment by Miller® draws weld fume away from a weld operator’s breathing zone, while keeping the weld environment clean.
