ADULT CLASS LEVELS BEGINNING - Perfect for those artists ready to begin their art journey or those who

want a refresher on the basics. Students will learn key studio safety, skills and techniques and get acquainted with the tools and terms associated with the medium.

INTERMEDIATE - Great for those artists who are already familiar with the basics.

Students will learn next-level skills and techniques while building on the tools and terms learned in beginning level classes.

ADVANCED - For artists with working knowledge of a medium, with the necessary skills and techniques to generate artwork. Students will further develop more complex skills to advance and perfect their techniques.

ALL LEVELS - These classes are unique opportunities for beginning through advancedlevel students. Our faculty work with students individually to ensure the growth of each one of our students.

MISSION The mission of the Indianapolis Art Center is to engage, enlighten and inspire our community by providing interactive art education, outreach to underserved audiences, support of artists and exposure to the visual arts.

After a long winter it sure is nice thinking ahead to warm weather and the joys of summer. Having purchased a new home with my wife Valorie in November I am personally looking forward to see what will be growing in our new yard and taking advantage of the season to further unpack my garage studio, host cookouts and enjoy jam-sessions around the camp fire.

Summer has a lot to look forward to at the Art Center too. Our nationally recognized ArtReach program turns 30 years old this year. Make it a point to visit our 27th Annual ArtReach Exhibition on display from April 19 – June 12 to see incredible work from youth created in our tuition-free after school programs throughout the community. We hold their work in high esteem as it will be on display alongside our Creative Renewal Fellowship Retrospective featuring works by the winners of the last round of the Arts Councils of Indianapolis’ Creative Renewal Fellowship recipients. As always these exhibitions are free and open to the public seven days a week so be sure to bring a friend.

The 49th OneAmerica Broad Ripple Art Fair has a new layout! The Art Center’s largest fundraiser will be held entirely on the grounds of the Art Center. Look forward to an energetic street fair experience with improved accessibility. We are proud to host 175 incredible artists from across the country. We couldn’t do this without you as it takes over 600 volunteers to pull this off – please consider volunteering this year. Fair dates are May 18-19 – visit our website for more information and to find the link to volunteer.

Summer Camps and Studio Staycations are on sale now. I have two daughters (aged 10 and 13) and they have “agedin” to the same block of camps offered at the Art Center this summer. They are both excited to take glassblowing in the morning and jewelry in the afternoon – TOGETHER. Let’s see how excited they are about that after a few classes! In all seriousness, if you haven’t enrolled your children or grandchildren in camp yet do not delay as they are selling out fast. For adults check out our Studio Staycations. These one week offerings are a great way to give back to yourself this summer.

Mark your calendars for ArtSparkle: Chroma. ArtSparkle will take place Friday, August 16. Join us for an exclusive night of great food, a silent auction and dancing to the music of Endless Summer Band. This vibrant party is a great way to have fun while giving back to the Art Center as we dance the night away raising money to support our mission.

Learn how to cut sheet glass and use it to create interesting patterns in this introduction to glass fusing. Walk away with a fused glass tile of your own making! Spend the weekend working out your art muscles and create a brilliant glass globe with a metal stand for your yard or garden.

Spend Friday evening gathering glass in the furnace, adding color, and forming blown glass into a glass globe. Come back on Saturday to learn basic welding techniques and make a metal stand for your beautiful glass globe. No experience necessary!

Music and art harmoniously join together in this wide-ranging camp where little artists will sing, dance and have a blast making their very own sound making creations!

It is never too early for little artists to experience sensory play and art-making.

Bring your little artist to explore all the colors one can imagine in this fun, week-long camp!

We will draw, paint, and explore mixed media projects to help expand campers’ understanding of color.

You ate through a whole apple, two pears, and three plums and you are still hungry!

Come make mixed media critters with collage and painting techniques inspired by Eric Carle’s The Very Hungry Caterpillar.

Campers will learn from professional artists as they explore advanced art techniques and gain a deeper understanding for what art is. Teaching Artists will lead campers through hands-on, experimental learning in nurturing studio environments. Campers will also have opportunities to socialize with fellow artists through interactive outdoor activities, making installations at ArtsPark and exploring galleries filled with contemporary works made by Art Center students, local and regional artists.

Each week will conclude with a celebration of the campers’ work in a student-led art show for friends and family! Join us 30 minutes before the end of class on Friday. Art shows will take place in the campers’ studio.

In a time where the benefits of an art education can seem undervalued in our national economy but are growing in popularity locally, we reflect on 30 years of our community arts outreach program, ArtReach, and its impact on the people of Indianapolis.

Youth and teens who participate in arts education show more positive academic and social outcomes than students who do not. Arts programming can play an even more transformational role in the lives of youth who face disproportionate risk factors, particularly youth and teens whose families are below the poverty threshold and are food-insecure, or children whose home situation is in flux or whose guardianship is in transition.

Knowing this, and seeking to bring arts education to youth living in public housing, ArtReach was founded in 1989 as a collaborative effort between the Indianapolis Art Center and Indianapolis’ Department of Housing and Urban Development. The program quickly established a rich and meaningful arts curriculum, which expanded to meet demand in community centers, churches, schools, and other spaces serving vulnerable children. To this day, it is an out-of-school program that brings high-quality art education to students who have little or no access to it through traditional school art classes.

ArtReach not only delivers an expansive visual art and art history curriculum, but it also uses creativity as a vehicle for young people to learn academically transferrable skills, develop increased self-confidence, and express themselves in a safe space.

“ArtReach is one of, if not the primary way that the Art Center brings its mission out beyond its main campus along 67th Street,” says Michelle Winkelman, Director of Education and Outreach.

“It’s really a bridge between the Art Center and all of these neighborhoods, schools, communities … giving students a place to pursue art where they aren’t being graded, where they have access to a professional artist as their instructor, where they can experience and experiment with multiple media, where they get an exhibition opportunity at an award-winning gallery.” The program is critical to the Art Center as an “ambassador, advocate, partner, and opportunity-maker,” for the community.

Today, ArtReach serves 20 sites during the school year and an average of 10 sites in the summer. The program expects to reach 1,000 youth ages 5 to 18 during the 2018-19 fiscal year, and remains Indianapolis’ most comprehensive visual arts outreach program. While she is proud of the growth—under her leadership ArtReach has grown from 8 sites to its current size—Winkelman stresses what’s most rewarding is seeing the program’s impact on individual students, and the community support and recognition it has garnered. ArtReach partners and teaching artists also testify to the merit of the program. Asked what differences she observed in students participating in ArtReach, Niki Girls—Executive Director at partner site Concord—states, “It makes them feel good about themselves.”

Like other Art Center education programs, ArtReach has a high-quality curriculum, materials, and evaluation, and classes are delivered by skilled and compassionate art instructors. Each weekly lesson includes study of an artistic style, medium, artist, art production, criticism, history, and aesthetics. Supplies range from traditional canvases, paints, and brushes for painting lessons to digital cameras and MacBooks for the digital arts. These components play important roles in the creation and understanding of art, and extend students’ experience far beyond a simple craft to a robust creative, personal, and cultural experience.

ArtReach culminates with an exhibition in the spring where youth work is professionally displayed in three galleries at the Art Center. Every individual participating in the program has work on display, and students value the recognition and celebration of their successes.

“We can’t give our kids enough of those badges of accomplishment,” says Girls. “It’s particularly true of the more quiet youth that we serve; it gives them affirmation that they don’t get as much. This is a place for them to shine. We all want to be able to shine."

In ArtReach classes, teaching artists act as role models, creating nurturing environments for peers to communicate and connect. As Girls says, “People want to be loved, to have opportunities to succeed, go someplace where we will be welcomed; we want to be able to do things where people don’t laugh at us when we make a mistake.” This is the kind of atmosphere the ArtReach program strives to create and maintain with every class.

If you ask how the program has changed over its 30 years, folks generally will agree that while some sites and activities have changed, the core values and enthusiasm for spreading arts education has not.

“One of the strengths of the program is that the curriculum is developed by the teaching artists, and they have the ability and opportunity to respond to the needs and interests of the students in their particular class. So in a sense we have always and are continually adapting to evolving needs,” Winkelman says.

For example, it has adapted to shorter summers and the “balanced calendar” of many of the school systems by adjusting semesters without taking away any programming.

Similarly, enthusiasm from partners is mutually present. Girls states that Concord has had and does have a million partners, out of necessity, but jokes that “ours is a marriage, because we haven’t divorced! It’s been a very stable, working relationship. I don’t ever recall having any challenges with ArtReach through the years. That’s kind of an anomaly. The Art Center is not a pop-up organization or a fad. Reading is a staple, math is a staple, art is a staple," Girls finishes.

The Eugene and Marilyn Glick Foundation provides major funding for ArtReach, and the program also relies on other grants and generous donations to ensure its continuity and innovation for the next generation of artists. The Art Center sees a bright future for ArtReach.

“A best practice of after school arts programming is the notion of depth of partnership,” states Teresa Vazquez, the Art Center’s Community Programs Manager. “Therefore, we are looking for ways to become more intertwined with our ArtReach partners, to customize our programming to respond to their organizational needs while we continue to do what the Art Center does best, which is provide high-quality, multi-faceted, and high-impact art experiences,” she continues.

Via deeper relationships with community partners, the Indianapolis Art Center outreach staff hope to reverse polarity and achieve a sense of “inreach” as well, to bring the community into the Art Center and enjoy what it has to offer in-house, including exhibitions, a 9.5-acre ArtsPark, and studio experiences that cannot easily be carried out to the community.

“We always strive to have strong, meaningful partnerships that go beyond a transactional relationship—so we aim to be part of each of the communities or locations we are serving,” Winkelman says. That partnership-building takes time but is very rewarding and usually results in other ways that the Art Center can work with that community.

“I can see a vision of ArtReach in the future that, for example, hits every school in Indianapolis at or below a certain socioeconomic level. But it could also be taking our model to other communities (say outside of Marion County) and helping them develop their own local versions of ArtReach. We definitely want to continue incorporating local artists, underrepresented artists, and especially artists of color into the curriculum while building strong and long-lasting partnerships with excellent youth-serving agencies.”

The 27th Annual ArtReach Exhibition will be on display at the Art Center from April 19 to June 12, 2019.
