Diplomatic resolution of Ukraine conflict still far off, says Lavrov

Friday, 29 November 2024

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated that a diplomatic resolution to the ongoing Ukraine crisis remains elusive as military tensions continue to escalate. In an interview, Lavrov emphasized that the battlefield situation suggests that a political settlement is still far from reach. He accused Washington and its allies of focusing on achieving a strategic defeat for Russia rather than seeking peace.

Lavrov also responded to recent missile strikes on Russian soil, calling them an “escalatory move” and reiterating Russia’s intention to respond proportionately to such actions. While Moscow has maintained its stance on achieving its military objectives, Lavrov reiterated President Vladimir Putin’s preference for resolving disputes through peaceful means, despite the ongoing hostilities. The escalation of military actions, he said, would not deter Russia from pursuing its goals.

India calls for protection of minorities in Bangladesh after Hindu priest’s arrest

India expressed deep concern over the arrest of Hindu priest Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari in Bangladesh and the subsequent denial of his bail. Das, associated with the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), was detained by the Bangladeshi police under unclear circumstances, leading to widespread protests by the Hindu community. India condemned the arrest and highlighted ongoing violence against minorities in Bangladesh, particularly Hindus, which has included attacks on homes, businesses, and places of worship.

The Ministry of External Affairs urged the Bangladeshi authorities to ensure the safety and security of all minorities in the country and to respect their right to peaceful assembly. Protests erupted across Bangladesh, particularly in Chittagong, where protesters clashed with the police demanding Das’s release. The International Society for Krishna Consciousness also called on the Indian government to intervene and seek the immediate release of the Hindu leader, emphasizing that ISKCON is a peaceful religious organization with no involvement in terrorism.

The statement expressed optimism that this truce would help calm tensions in the Middle East, which has been severely impacted by ongoing conflicts.

US prosecutor resigns amid high-profile ‘murder-forhire’ case

amian Williams, the US federal prosecutor for the Southern District of New York, has announced he will resign on December 13, ahead of the incoming administration under Presidentelect Donald Trump. Williams, who took office in 2021, has overseen several highprofile cases, including the prosecution of Vikash Yadav, a former officer of India’s Research and Analysis Wing (RAW). Yadav was charged with plotting to hire hitmen to kill Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, a Khalistani leader. In addition to Yadav, his co-conspirator Nikhil Gupta was arrested and extradited from the Czech Republic earlier this year in connection with the plot. Gupta has denied the charges, and his case continues in court. Despite Williams’ departure, the case will proceed under the leadership of his deputy, Edward Kim, who will serve as Acting US Attorney.

Williams expressed mixed emotions about leaving, calling his tenure a “dream job” but noting the office’s high level of functioning. The transition in leadership raises questions about how upcoming cases, including international matters like the Yadav case, will be handled under the incoming administration.

Mahesh Jethmalani criticizes Congress over Adani charges, calls US indictment baseless

Rajya Sabha MP and Senior Advocate Mahesh Jethmalani has strongly criticized the Congress party for relying on the US Department of Justice’s (DoJ) indictment of Adani Group officials, calling the charges baseless and lacking evidence. Jethmalani defended Adani, stating that the indictment did not include charges related to bribery in India. He accused the US Democratic deep state of attempting to undermine India’s growth story, pointing out that the allegations were based on insufficient and sketchy evidence. He further questioned the credibility of the indictment, arguing that it was aimed at halting India’s business progress. Jethmalani urged the Congress party to substantiate its claims and refrain from using unverified legal actions as a basis for attacking Indian businesses. He also called on the opposition to focus on facts and not make reckless statements that could damage the reputation of Indian industry and economic growth.

Judge dismisses election interference charges against Trump

Afederal judge has dismissed the election interference charges against US President-elect Donald Trump, responding to a request from Special Prosecutor Jack Smith. The request followed the changed circumstances after Trump won the presidency. The charges, related to his alleged involvement in the January 6 riot and the removal of classified documents, were dismissed by Judge Tanya Chutkan in Washington. The dismissal applies to the case concerning the election interference, while the classified documents case remains pending, after another judge, Aileen Cannon, had earlier dismissed similar charges.

Smith indicated that his decision to drop the case was influenced by the Justice Department’s policy against prosecuting sitting presidents, although he maintained that the case’s

The filing clarifies that the DoJ indictment does not involve any Adani officials in bribery or corruption related to the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. The charges concern alleged securities fraud, not bribery, and the group has faced inaccurate media reports on the matter.

The clarification comes after significant media speculation regarding the Adani Group’s involvement in the case, which has impacted the company’s market capitalization. Adani Green Energy emphasized that the DoJ’s indictment only mentions other individuals connected to Azure Power, not Adani Group executives.

The group has vehemently denied any wrongdoing and called for an end to what it views as a media misrepresentation. The company now faces efforts to rebuild investor confidence and clarify the situation in both domestic and international markets.

Trump threatens tariff hikes on China, Mexico, and Canada

President-elect Donald Trump has vowed to implement significant tariffs on imports from China, Mexico, and Canada on his first day in office. He announced plans to impose a 25% tariff on goods from Mexico and Canada unless they address the flow of illegal immigrants and fentanyl drugs into the US. In addition, a 10% tariff would be added to Chinese goods if the country does not take decisive action against fentanyl trafficking.

Trump reiterated that he would use tariffs as a tool to protect American interests, but economists have

Erdogan reaffirmed Turkey’s commitment to continuing its peace efforts, particularly as a mediator in the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia. The Turkish President also expressed concerns over the US’s decision to allow Ukraine to deploy long-range missiles, which he believes could escalate the war.

His announcement comes amid a rising drug overdose crisis in the US, largely attributed to fentanyl.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported a significant increase in fentanyl-related deaths in 2022. Trump’s proposed tariffs, though controversial, aim to pressure neighboring countries and China to take stronger action against these issues.

UK Conservative MP Bob Blackman has condemned the attacks on the Hindu community in Bangladesh and criticized the Bangladeshi interim government for failing to protect religious minorities. Blackman specifically expressed concern over the imprisonment of Chinmoy Krishna Das and the potential ban on the ISKCON (International Society for Krishna Consciousness) in the country. His comments come amidst a wider campaign of violence

against Hindus in Bangladesh since the interim government took office in August 2023.

Blackman called for global religious freedom and warned that such attacks and the possible ban on ISKCON could further threaten the rights of minorities in Bangladesh. Protests broke out in Bangladesh following the arrest of Krishna Das, a key figure in the Bangladesh Jatiya Hindu Mohajot. The situation highlights growing tensions between religious groups in the country and calls for increased international attention on the treatment of minorities in Bangladesh.

Karoline Leavitt, a spokeswoman for the transition team, stated that the threats, which were directed at Trump’s appointees and their families, included bomb threats and swatting, a practice where false emergency reports are made to trigger heavy law enforcement responses.

While the transition team did not disclose specific details about who was targeted, they confirmed that law enforcement responded swiftly to ensure the safety of those involved.

Among those targeted were Susie Wiles, incoming White House chief of staff Pam Bondi, former Florida Attorney General and Trump’s nominee for U.S. Attorney General, Congresswoman Elise Stefanik, Trump’s pick for U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Howard Lutnick, Trump’s nominee for Secretary of Commerce, and Brooke Rollins, his choice for Secretary of Agriculture. The threats prompted immediate action from authorities to protect the individuals and their families from potential harm, ensuring their safety amid the tense political environment.

A fragile ceasefire and an uncertain global order

The United States has successfully brokered a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas, but one must question whether this diplomatic intervention comes too little, too late. After weeks of relentless violence and staggering human losses on both sides, this pause in hostilities is essential, yet it raises fundamental questions about its durability and effectiveness in addressing the root causes of this age-old conflict. Without a robust roadmap for peace, underpinned by trust and tangible action, this ceasefire risks becoming just another lull in a cycle of violence.

Simultaneously, the specter of escalating global conflict looms larger. Russia’s intensified bombardment of Ukrainian territory signals that the Kremlin is far from a negotiated settlement. The Ukrainian war continues to stretch global resources and alliances, with no clear resolution in sight. This ongoing crisis underscores the fragility of global security frameworks and the glaring need for cohesive international leadership.

What happens if we enter a “Trump 2.0” era? His previous foreign policy was marked by unpredictable decisions and a transactional approach to alliances. A second term could potentially upend the delicate equilibrium in both conflicts. Trump’s closeness to Israel might embolden its leadership to adopt a more hardline stance post-ceasefire, risking reignition of hostilities with Hamas. On Ukraine, his well-documented ambivalence toward NATO could weaken Western resolve, allowing Russia to further its territorial ambitions.

Both conflicts—the Israel-Hamas struggle and the Ukrainian war— are critical tests of global unity and leadership. The future of these wars

will depend on sustained, strategic international diplomacy. Ceasefires and sanctions alone are not enough; what’s needed is a comprehensive vision for peace and security that prioritizes human lives over political expediency.

The IndoUS Tribune remains committed to spotlighting these global challenges, urging leaders to act decisively before the window for meaningful solutions slams shut.

India clarifies stance on US legal matter involving private firms

India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed on Friday that it has not received any communication from the United States regarding a recent legal matter involving private firms and individuals, as well as the US Department of Justice and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that the issue is a legal matter concerning private entities and does not involve the Indian government. He emphasized that India was not informed in advance and has not had any discussions with the US government on the matter.

Jaiswal also addressed inaccurate media reports suggesting that top officials from one of India’s fastest-growing companies were involved in bribery and corruption

charges. He clarified that these reports were based on a flawed understanding of the situation. The spokesperson further explained that any legal request from a foreign government, such as summons or arrest warrants, would be considered through mutual legal assistance channels, but no such request has been made by the US in this case.

The MEA also emphasized that India upholds the rule of law and adheres to established legal procedures in matters of international cooperation. Jaiswal urged the media to refrain from speculative reporting that could harm the reputations of individuals or businesses without verified facts. He reiterated that India maintains strong legal frameworks and would act in accordance with them if necessary, while also cooperating with international partners on issues of legal assistance and justice.

DeSantis faces pressure as he delays decision on Rubio’s Senate seat

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is delaying his decision on who will fill Marco Rubio’s Senate seat, which opened after Rubio was appointed Secretary of State by President-elect Donald Trump. DeSantis is conducting a thorough vetting process and plans to announce his pick by early January. Although Trump’s allies, including Elon Musk, are backing Lara Trump for the role, DeSantis is also considering several Florida Republicans with close ties to his administration. The decision is complicated by DeSantis’ strained relationship with Trump after challenging him in the 2024 GOP presidential race, with DeSantis weighing the political implications for his potential 2028 campaign.

Bob Menendez seeks new trial after mishandling of evidence by prosecutors

Former New Jersey Senator Bob Menendez has requested a new trial following his conviction in a high-profile bribery case. Menendez’s legal team argues that the jury was improperly given evidence that should have been withheld. According to prosecutors, they accidentally loaded incorrect versions of nine exhibits onto a laptop provided to the jury during deliberations. While prosecutors claim there is no significant impact from the mistake, Menendez’s lawyers argue that this breach exposed the jury to material that could have influenced their verdict, specifically related to military aid to Egypt, which was protected under the Speech or Debate Clause of the Constitution. This clause shields lawmakers from being questioned about their legislative acts, a defense that Menendez’s team believes was compromised by the evidence presented. The former senator was convicted of bribery, fraud, and acting as a foreign agent in July, and is set to be sentenced in January 2025.

Bird flu virus detected in raw milk in California

Health officials in California have confirmed the presence of the bird flu virus in a sample of raw milk from a local dairy farm. The Santa Clara County Public Health Department detected the H5N1 avian influenza virus in milk produced by Raw Farm LLC of Fresno County. The milk was quickly recalled, and public health officials have urged consumers to avoid the affected batch of whole and cream-top raw milk. No illnesses have been reported from this lot, but authorities are advising that customers return any affected products to stores. This discovery follows a broader trend of

H5N1 outbreaks, which have impacted wild birds, poultry, and dairy cows in the U.S.

Although the risk to the general public is considered low by the CDC, people who are in close contact with infected animals are at higher risk. The detection of H5N1 in raw milk is the latest in a series of incidents involving the virus, which has been responsible for a number of human infections in workers exposed to infected animals. With several cases reported in California, including the first pediatric case in the U.S., public health authorities are closely monitoring the situation and advising caution around potential sources of contamination.

Biden warns against tariffs on Canada and Mexico

President Joe Biden has urged President-elect Donald Trump to reconsider imposing tariffs on Canada and Mexico, warning it would harm diplomatic relations and trade. Trump’s proposal includes a 25% tariff on goods from both countries, as part of a strategy to tackle illegal immigration and drug trafficking. Biden argued that such a move would be counterproductive, as the U.S. relies on these neighbors for cooperation on key issues. While officials in Canada and Mexico have expressed concerns over the economic impact, Trump’s allies suggest the tariffs could be a negotiation tactic to push these countries to act on immigration and drug control.

Elon Musk calls for the elimination of the CFPB in new post

Elon Musk has sparked controversy with a call to “delete” the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), a federal agency designed to protect consumers from financial abuses. Musk, a prominent tech entrepreneur and advisor to Donald Trump’s incoming administration, made the comment on X (formerly Twitter), labeling the agency an example of unnecessary bureaucracy. The CFPB, established after the 2008 financial crisis, monitors financial institutions and protects consumers from predatory practices. Musk’s post echoed sentiments from venture capitalist Marc Andreessen, who criticized the agency for its regulatory impact on financial firms. Musk’s call is part of a broader conservative push to dissolve the CFPB, which some argue is overly politicized and unaccountable. However, the agency has played a crucial role in securing billions of dollars in consumer relief, and its dissolution would mark a significant shift in financial regulation.

Rudy Giuliani expresses financial struggles amid legal battles

Rudy Giuliani, the former New York mayor and personal attorney to Donald Trump, erupted in federal court on Tuesday, telling a judge he could not pay his bills. The outburst occurred during a hearing regarding a defamation judgment of nearly $150 million owed to two Georgia election workers, Ruby Freeman and Shaye Moss, whom Giuliani falsely accused of election fraud. Giuliani, 80, insisted that he had no access to cash or assets due to court orders that froze his accounts.

His legal troubles stem from his involvement in spreading false claims about the 2020 election, which led to the defamation lawsuit. Despite attempts to comply with asset disclosures, including turning over a Mercedes Benz and access to his Upper East Side apartment, Giuliani’s financial woes continue as he faces further legal and financial challenges. He is set to go to trial in January regarding additional assets tied to his debts.

Senator Markwayne Mullin’s hold on Donahue’s nomination for a fourth star to command U.S. Army forces in Europe and Africa was confirmed by the Pentagon, but no reason for the block was given. Despite controversy over the

Afghanistan withdrawal, Donahue is highly regarded in the military. His image, boarding the final flight out of Kabul, became iconic. Critics, including former Special Operations head Tony Thomas, argue that Donahue is being used as a political pawn.

This hold comes amid broader Republican dissatisfaction with the Afghanistan pullout, with figures like Donald Trump pledging to hold those responsible accountable.

Australia passes social media ban for children under 16

Australia has passed groundbreaking legislation that will ban children under the age of 16 from using social media platforms by the end of 2025. The law, which has received bipartisan support, aims to protect the mental health and well-being of young people, with social media companies facing fines if they fail to comply. Under the new rules, platforms must implement age verification measures and may be fined up to $32.5 million for not adequately preventing underage users from accessing their services. The law, which excludes some platforms like YouTube and gaming services, has sparked debate, with some questioning the effectiveness of such a blanket ban. Nonetheless, it represents a global first and could set a precedent for other countries grappling with the impact of social media on youth mental health.

Mexico’s president urges Trump to rethink Cuba and Venezuela policies

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has urged U.S. President-elect Donald Trump to reconsider the trade embargo on Cuba and sanctions on Venezuela, arguing that these measures harm citizens and contribute to mass migration.

During a phone call with Trump, Sheinbaum highlighted the negative impact of these punitive policies on everyday people, especially the poor and vulnerable. She proposed ending the blockades and suggested Mexico’s comprehensive strategy for tackling migration by addressing its root causes, such as job scarcity and lack of opportunities.

This strategy has led to a decrease in migrants heading north, especially from countries like El Salvador and Honduras. Sheinbaum’s comments come in response to Trump’s earlier threats to impose tariffs on Mexican imports and conduct mass deportations of undocumented migrants.

Haji Syed Salman Chishty, the head priest of Ajmer Sharif Dargah, has called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Supreme Court to take decisive action against hate-mongers seeking to disrupt India’s communal harmony. This appeal follows the admission of a petition in a local court, which claims that a Hanuman temple exists within the premises of the Ajmer Dargah. Chishty, defending the sanctity of the Dargah, condemned efforts to mislead the public and manipulate religious sentiments for divisive purposes.

The petition, filed by Vishnu Gupta of Hindu Sena, alleges that remnants of a Shiva temple are part of the Dargah structure, citing historical texts and architectural evidence. Chishty expressed concern over the growing trend of targeting religious sites to stoke communal tensions, referencing the ongoing disputes over places like Kashi and Mathura. The Dargah committee has denied the claims, emphasizing the site’s importance as a symbol of unity in diversity. Chishty’s plea underscores the need for upholding the values of peace, love, and inclusivity promoted by the Dargah.

Lok Sabha extends Joint Committee’s tenure on Waqf Bill

The Lok Sabha has passed a resolution extending the tenure of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) reviewing the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024 until the 2025 Budget Session. The bill, aimed at reforming the management of Waqf properties in India, has been delayed due to ongoing debates and disruptions within the committee, with both ruling and opposition members at odds over the bill’s contents.

Pal defended the extension, countering opposition claims that the government was trying to rush through the bill without proper discussion. The JPC was initially tasked with submitting its report by the end of the Winter Session, but the Opposition had pushed for more time to ensure thorough deliberation. The Waqf Bill seeks to address governance issues surrounding religious properties, and the extended review period will allow for a more comprehensive examination of the proposed amendments.

Khalistani terrorist issues threat against Odisha police conference

Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, a Khalistani terrorist and leader of the banned Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) group, has issued a video threatening to disrupt the Director Generals/Inspector Generals of Police Conference 2024 in Bhubaneswar. Over 30 people were injured in a fire that broke out during a ‘mashaal’ procession in Khandwa district, Madhya Pradesh. The incident occurred late at night after participants of the procession, which was held to commemorate the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack martyrs, gathered at Ghantaghar Chowk with flaming torches. Some torches fell onto the ground, igniting a liquid substance and causing a large fire that led to panic and a stampedelike situation. The injured, many of whom were women and children, were rushed to the hospital, with some suffering from severe burn injuries. Local BJP leaders were present at the procession, which had been approved by the authorities. Despite Trump tariff threats, Bank of America sees strong future in Mexico

Bank of America remains optimistic about its future in Mexico, despite recent tariff threats by President-elect Donald Trump. The bank sees longterm growth potential, driven by the “nearshoring” trend, where companies move operations closer to the U.S. to reduce costs.

Bank of America’s Mexico head, Emilio Romano, emphasized that this trend is unlikely to reverse, and that Mexico will continue to integrate economically with North America. The bank aims to double its revenue and client volume in Mexico

Romano highlighted that the nearshoring shift is aligned with the broader regional economic integration under the USMCA trade agreement, which is up for review in 2026.

While the tariff threat has caused uncertainty in markets, the bank believes the strategic advantages of Mexico’s proximity to the U.S. will continue to attract multinational investments.

As a result, many analysts now predict long-term economic difficulties for Russia, particularly if sanctions intensify.

tales and gratitude:
the fun, and the history

Every year, as the leaves fall and a crisp chill permeates the air, families across the United States come together to celebrate Thanksgiving. This cherished holiday, observed on the fourth Thursday of November, has evolved over centuries, weaving together history, culture, and modern traditions. While it’s a day marked by indulgent feasts and family reunions, Thanksgiving is, at its heart, a profound reminder to reflect on gratitude and the bonds that hold us together.

A Feast Rooted in History Thanksgiving is often traced back to the autumn of 1621, when the Pilgrims of Plymouth and the Wampanoag people shared a meal to celebrate a successful harvest. Having survived a brutal winter and relying on the knowledge and generosity of the Wampanoag, the Pilgrims hosted what is now considered the “First Thanksgiving.” This gathering featured a menu quite different from today’s dishes — wildfowl, venison, and an array of seasonal vegetables formed the centerpiece of this early celebration.

While the narrative of harmony surrounding this event has been romanticized over time, the feast represented a fleeting moment of cooperation between two vastly different cultures. The relationship between settlers and Native Americans would later be marred by conflict, displacement, and immense suffering. For many Native Americans, Thanksgiving is a reminder of the pain their ancestors endured, adding a layer of complexity to the holiday’s story.

For decades after that initial feast, Thanksgiving remained an informal tradition, celebrated sporadically in New England as a day of prayer and gratitude for blessings such as military victories or

the end of droughts. It wasn’t until the 19th century that Thanksgiving began to take shape as a national holiday.

The credit for this largely goes to Sarah Josepha Hale, a writer and editor who lobbied tirelessly for the establishment of a unified day of thanks. Her campaign spanned decades, culminating in 1863 when President Abraham Lincoln declared Thanksgiving a national holiday amidst the backdrop of the Civil War. Lincoln envisioned the day as a means of fostering unity in a divided nation, urging Americans to come together to “heal the wounds of the nation.”

Initially celebrated on the last Thursday of November, Thanksgiving’s date shifted slightly over the years. In 1941, President Franklin D. Roosevelt solidified the fourth Thursday of November as the official holiday, seeking to bolster the holiday shopping season during the Great Depression. According to History. com, Thanksgiving is commonly known as a way to commemorate the colonial Pilgrims’ harvest meal in 1621 that they shared with Wampanoag Indians, per Time, who “were key to the survival of the colonists during the first year they arrived in 1620.” Although there is controversy about whether or not the meal was originally intended to be shared.

As years passed, designating feasts dedicated to giving thanks “on an annual or occasional basis became common practice in other New England settlements as well.”

Traditions That Warm the Heart

Thanksgiving traditions have come a long way since the 17th century, yet the spirit of gratitude and abundance remains central. The holiday is synonymous with food, and for many, the highlight is the classic Thanksgiving meal. A golden, roasted turkey takes center stage,

Unpacking the feast,

of Thanksgiving

surrounded by dishes like cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, stuffing, and pumpkin pie. These staples, now iconic, symbolize the agricultural roots of the celebration.

But Thanksgiving is about more than just the food on the table. It’s a day for families and friends to reconnect, sometimes traveling across the country to be together. Whether it’s sharing stories over dinner, watching football games, or tuning in to the dazzling Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, the holiday is a time to pause and cherish the company of loved ones.

Acts of kindness also play a significant role in Thanksgiving. Many people spend the day volunteering at soup kitchens or donating to food drives, ensuring that those in need can partake in the holiday’s spirit of generosity.

A Modern Twist: Black Friday and Beyond

Thanksgiving doesn’t just mark the end of autumn; it also ushers in the holiday shopping season. The day after Thanksgiving, commonly known as Black Friday, has become a retail phenomenon. Shoppers flock to stores, both in-person and online, lured by deep discounts and limited-time deals.

The origins of Black Friday, however, are less glamorous than its current commercial sheen. In the 1960s, Philadelphia police coined the term to describe the chaos of post-Thanksgiving crowds, as suburban shoppers flooded the city for early holiday deals and the annual Army-Navy football game. Merchants eventually embraced the term, rebranding it to signify profitability, as the day when businesses moved “from red to black” in their ledgers.

Though Black Friday has grown into a cultural event, its meteoric rise also

reflects the evolution of Thanksgiving itself. The holiday now exists at the intersection of tradition and modernity, balancing gratitude with consumerism.

While Thanksgiving remains a beloved holiday for millions, it is not without controversy. For Native Americans and Alaska Natives, the holiday often symbolizes loss and injustice. In the years following the Pilgrims’ arrival, Indigenous populations faced devastating consequences from European colonization, including diseases and violent conflicts that decimated their communities.

For some, Thanksgiving is observed as a National Day of Mourning — a time to honor ancestors and reflect on the enduring challenges faced by Native peoples. This perspective invites a deeper understanding of the holiday’s history, encouraging Americans to acknowledge its complexities and embrace a more inclusive narrative.

At its core, Thanksgiving endures as a celebration of gratitude. It transcends its historical roots, offering a moment to pause and appreciate the blessings of life. In a world that often feels fast-paced and fragmented, the holiday encourages togetherness and reflection, reminding us of the importance of connection and kindness.

From the humble harvest feast of 1621 to today’s grand gatherings, Thanksgiving has continually evolved, adapting to the needs and values of the times. Yet, its essence remains unchanged — a time to express thanks, share abundance, and come together as a community.

As families gather around the table this Thanksgiving, the holiday serves as a poignant reminder: no matter how much the world changes, gratitude remains timeless.

The crisis at Shri Banke Bihari mandir and Barsana temple: Negligence, corruption, and the betrayal of devotion Dharam

Shri Banke Bihari Mandir in Vrindavan and the Barsana Temple, revered for their deep connection to Shri Krishna and Radha Rani, are not just sacred sites; they are spiritual epicenters for millions of Hindus worldwide. Every year, countless devotees visit these holy places with unwavering faith to seek divine blessings. Yet, these sacred shrines are being tarnished by gross mismanagement, corruption, and an alarming lack of accountability.

At Banke Bihari Mandir, chaos reigns supreme. Poor crowd management creates near-stampede situations daily.

Police personnel, though visible at entry and exit points, are absent where they are needed most—inside the temple. Those few present inside do little to manage the crowd, standing as mere spectators. Their failure to intervene or control the situation is nothing short of gross negligence.

Pujaris, instead of embodying the sanctity of their role, openly exploit devotees’ sentiments. For amounts ranging from Rs.1,100 to Rs.5,100 in the name of “Dakshina,” they push 50–70 people into the VIP barricaded area, which is designed to accommodate only 10–15 individuals. This greed-induced overcrowding compromises the safety of devotees, turning what should be a peaceful

into a nightmare.

I recently witnessed this appalling mismanagement firsthand. The temple was overcrowded, and in the VIP section, women were screaming for help as they struggled to breathe in the suffocating chaos. The indifference of the police personnel, who stood unmoved amidst the cries for assistance, was shocking and unacceptable.

The situation at Barsana Temple, though less chaotic, reflects similar mismanagement and corruption. The VIP area at Barsana is larger and can accommodate 50–70 people comfortably. Yet, the behavior of the Pujaris and the police personnel mirrors that at the Banke Bihari mandir. Pujaris openly demand bribes to grant easier access to the VIP section, and the police stand idly by, failing to ensure order or fairness.

The lack of accountability and rampant greed at these sacred sites diminishes the spiritual experience for devotees and undermines the sanctity of these temples. Such conduct is a betrayal of the faith and devotion of millions.

The Modi-Yogi double-engine government, which prides itself on preserving India’s heritage, must act decisively to address these issues. The following measures are urgently needed:

4Effective Crowd Management: Trained personnel must be deployed at both temples to manage the flow of devotees and prevent overcrowding.

4Strict Oversight of Pujaris: Pujaris must adhere to ethical standards, with strict penalties for exploitation or misconduct.

4Accountability for Police Personnel: Police stationed inside the temples must be proactive in maintaining order and addressing devotees’ concerns.

4Reform of VIP Systems: VIP areas should be managed transparently, with strict limits on the number of people allowed at a time to ensure safety and sanctity.

These sacred temples are not just historical monuments; they are living embodiments of devotion and faith. Mismanagement, corruption, and negligence have no place in such divine settings. It is the responsibility of the temple authorities, the police, and the government to ensure that these issues are addressed swiftly and effectively.

As the Publisher of IndoUS Tribune and a devotee, I urge the authorities to take immediate action. Let us preserve the sanctity of Shri Banke Bihari Mandir and Barsana Temple so that they may remain places of peace, devotion, and divine connection for generations to come.

Is coffee good for your heart? Exploring the health benefits and risks

Coffee, one of the most consumed beverages worldwide, has long been a topic of debate when it comes to heart health. For many, it’s a morning ritual to kickstart the day, while others enjoy its benefits throughout the day. But does coffee benefit your heart, or could too much be harmful? Recent studies provide fascinating insights into how coffee and caffeine consumption can impact cardiovascular health.

Moderation is Key for Heart Health

According to a recent study published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, consuming coffee in moderation— about 200–300 milligrams (mg) of caffeine daily, or roughly 2–3 cups— may help lower the risk of developing conditions like type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, and stroke.

The researchers found that individuals consuming this moderate amount of caffeine had a significantly reduced risk of cardiometabolic diseases compared to those who consumed little or no caffeine. The study analyzed data from over 360,000 participants, highlighting coffee’s potential role in supporting heart health.

How Coffee Might Help

The protective effects of coffee appear to extend beyond caffeine alone. Coffee and tea are complex

beverages containing various bioactive compounds such as flavonoids, alkaloids, and polyphenols. These compounds are believed to have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which may:

4Enhance insulin sensitivity.

4Boost fat metabolism.

4Reduce inflammation, supporting overall cardiovascular health.

These benefits could explain why moderate coffee consumption is linked to a lower risk of type 2 diabetes and heart-related conditions.

What About Excessive Coffee Consumption?

While moderate coffee consumption appears to be beneficial, consuming excessive amounts of caffeine may pose

risks. High levels of caffeine intake can elevate blood pressure, increase heart rate, and potentially raise the risk of stroke in individuals predisposed to cardiovascular disease.

Experts caution against overestimating coffee’s benefits, emphasizing that moderation is essential. Overconsumption could lead to adverse effects that outweigh its potential protective benefits.

Caffeine and Blood Vessel Health

Another recent study, conducted among patients with lupus—an autoimmune condition associated with an increased risk of stroke and cardiovascular disease—found that caffeine may improve blood vessel health. This research underscores the diverse benefits of caffeine and its role in promoting vascular health even in

populations at higher risk of heart issues.

What Does This Mean for Coffee Drinkers?

For most individuals, moderate coffee consumption can be part of a heart-healthy lifestyle, particularly when combined with a balanced diet and regular physical activity. However, people with pre existing heart conditions or sensitivity to caffeine should consult their healthcare provider before increasing their intake.

Takeaway for a Healthy Heart

4Stick to 2–3 cups of coffee per day to enjoy potential heart-health benefits.

4Avoid high-calorie additives like sugar and cream, which can negate coffee’s positive effects.

4Consider other sources of bioactive compounds, such as tea and cocoa, which offer similar cardiovascular benefits.

By maintaining balance and paying attention to individual health needs, coffee can be a delightful and beneficial addition to a heart-conscious lifestyle.

Alternative Investments

SENTIMENTS

ALTERNATIVES or ALTs are becoming popular - physical commodities & futures-based funds, nontraded funds, private-equity or private-credit. Things beyond the listed stocks & bonds are alts. While embraced by institutions & pension funds for years, the retail investors warmed up to these after the GFC 2008-09 & spectacular failures of the traditional stock-bond allocations to protect them in 2022; institutions allocate about 23% to alts, but individual investors are at about 5% only.

GOLD & SILVER (10/18/24) & REAL ESTATE Stocks & Funds (11/15/24) were addressed in separate articles.

A newer category of MULTIASSET funds includes stocks, bonds & alts in which small portions for alts are carved out from stock & bond allocations. This is seen as an improvement of the traditional allocation/ balanced (hybrid) funds. There are also standalone alts funds.

PRIVATE -equity, -credit & VENTURE-capital have grown as many companies remain private for longer (including several Unicorns). There is plenty of private capital available. Traditional financial firms are setting up private-market units.

Private-equity may trade on platforms such as EquityZen, Forge/ FRGE, Nasdaq Private Market, but there are few regulations or disclosures & commissions/ fees are very high. Moreover, privatecompany CFOs must approve/ reject any proposed trades within 90 days. To participate in privatemarkets, you must be an accredited investor ($200K+/ 300K+ income or $1+ million assets).

Post-IPO public companies suddenly face lots of disclosures & regulations. The number of USlisted companies has been declining for years.

LIQUID ALTs are the hedgefund type strategies available in liquid fund wrappers (listed OEFs, ETFs, CEFs). Note that hedge-fund type fees (base percentage plus percentage of profits) aren’t allowed for listed funds, but this area is still lucrative for its institutional & retail reach.

NATURAL RESOURCES is a catchall term for anything obtained from nature.

COMMODITY FUNDS is another broad term for funds that hold physical commodities or futures (derivatives). The commodities include precious metals (gold, silver, platinum, palladium), base metals (copper, aluminum, tin, zinc, nickel, lead), ferrous materials (iron, iron-ore, steel), energy (oil, heating-oil, gasoline, natural gas), ags/softs (grains, coffee, cocoa, sugar, fruits, juices, cotton) & livestock/ meats. It’s not practical to hold most commodities directly, so many of these funds are futures-based. Commodities are very volatile but have low correlations among themselves, or with stocks or bonds.

A commodity can be in contango (with its futures-curve up-sloping) that is indicative of normal supply & demand, or in backwardation (with its futurescurve down-sloping) that is indicative of tight supplies. As these futures-based funds roll futures periodically, backwardation has roll-benefits but contango imposes roll-costs. Most commodity funds generate partnership form K-1 after the year end that make tax filings a bit complex, but there

are several commodity funds that generate regular 1099 (K-1 or 1099 is indicated below within parentheses).

General commodity index funds have static weights & rebalance on specific schedules; examples include DBC (K-1), GSG (K-1; 70% energy). Some funds dynamically select & weigh commodity sectors, PDBC (1099), COMT (1099), USCI (K-1).

ENERGY COMPLEX is a broad group of energy equities (not alts), energy futures-based funds, energy distribution entities with taxpreferences (MLPs) & alternative/ renewable energy. Energy equity ETFs can be subdivided into exploration & production (E&P –XOP, IEO, PXE), diversified energy producers (XLE, IYE, FENY, VDE, RSPG), oil-servicing (OIH, IEZ, XES) & midstream MLP ETFs such as AMLP, EMLP, MLPA, MLPX (all of these generate 1099s). For specific company names, look at the top holdings of the ETFs. Crude oil futures-based ETFs include USO (K-1), BNO (K-1), OILK (1099); natural gas ETFs are UNG (K-1), UNL (K-1).

The energy markets also affect the agricultural markets (sugarcane, corn, beets, potatoes) because large sugar producers can make

sugar or industrial ethanol (for gasohol) depending on the crops & the demand for sugar & gasoline. The use of biofuels (methane, syngas, ethanol, methanol, butanol, biodiesel, ether additives) is also increasing.

ALTERNATIVE ENERGY

sources are hydro, nuclear, wind, solar - some are listed equities, others are alts. There is a general trend towards clean/ green energy. Renewable sources (wind, solar) generate energy intermittently, so energy storage technology becomes critical. The electric-vehicles (EVs) may eventually replace gasoline/ diesel-consuming internal combustion engines (ICE); the gas-electric hybrids may be around as interim solutions. Despite these developments, the reality is that fossil-fuels based energy (oil, natural gas; also, coal in EMs) will remain dominant for the next 10-20 years in the developed countries, 30-50 years in the developing countries.

CRYPTOs (Bitcoin, Ether, Dogecoin, others) are still evolving & may be addressed in a future article.

Live the power of red, add a little oomph to your life

Red lipstick has been a symbol of strength for centuries. It has been worn by women to make a statement and highlight their resilience in the face of adversity. A nice coat of red lipstick is about as timeless as it gets for any makeup look.

For evidence, just take a look at beauty trends season after season — red lipstick is eternal and always makes an appearance. Once you find a complementary shade of red lipstick as per your skin tone, it’s one of the best products you can incorporate to accentuate your makeup look.

“To achieve bold red lips, start by applying some lip balm to ensure that your lips are not chapped. With the help of a red lip liner, outline your lips to get that perfect lip shape. While shaping your lips, don’t stray too far outside of your natural lip line. Rather, line just slightly outside the contours of your natural lip shape, and use an angled brush to reach every little space for perfect application,” says Naveen Bhalla, Brand Trainer, of Anastasia Beverly Hills India.

“Next, put on your favorite matte red lipstick with the help of a small pencil brush. Defuse any visible harsh lines of the lip liner to get seamlessly sculpted and bold red lips. This season is all about glossy lips, so top up any clear gloss at the center of your lips to add a beautiful finish to the lips. Avoid rubbing your lips together because this can smear your carefully lined edges.”

Before you walk out the door with your perfect red lips, make sure that your teeth look perfect as well.

Since red lipstick is super bright, it is also very noticeable when it ends up somewhere it should not be, like your teeth. Bhalla suggests keeping the eyes nude with red lips and applying a lot of mascara to enhance the eyes beautifully. He adds, “Brows should be filled and detailed in symmetry to frame the eyes better. The skin should be fresh and dewy with not too much blush on the cheeks. This red lip look is timeless, achievable, and can be worn with any outfit Western or Indian.”

This festive season, try out the bold red lips and slay the day!
