resident Donald Trump has confirmed that a 10 percent tariff on Chinese goods will begin on March 4, 2025, in addition to the tariff imposed earlier this month. Tariffs on Canada and Mexico will also take effect on the same date. Trump said these measures are necessary to address the flow of illicit drugs from these countries. Earlier, Canada and Mexico were given a 30-day delay to improve their border policies, pledging to reduce drug trafficking and illegal immigration. If they show progress, the tariffs may be reconsidered. Trump also hinted at imposing 25 percent tariffs on the European Union, particularly on car imports, accusing the EU of exploiting the U.S. in global trade. European leaders rejected this claim, stressing the EU’s role in promoting peace and fair trade. Economists have raised concerns that the tariffs could slow economic growth, with the Tax Foundation predicting a 0.4 percent reduction in long-term GDP. However, former Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross downplayed inflation fears, pointing to low inflation during previous tariffs. Financial markets reacted with mixed results, with the Dow Jones gaining 400 points, while other indexes remained stable. The market uncertainty is attributed to the rapid shifts in U.S. trade policies.

local population, in ensuring its success.
The agreement will cover a wide range of sectors, focusing on trade, technology, security, defense, and connectivity, with particular emphasis on key industries such as pharmaceuticals, batteries, clean hydrogen, and semiconductor chips. In addition to the FTA, Von Der Leyen underscored that the EU and India are looking to deepen their cooperation in defense and security. This includes the possibility of a future security and defense partnership between the two, similar to the agreements the EU has signed with Japan and South Korea. She also pointed to the growing geopolitical challenges, particularly the aggressive posture from major powers, and the uncertainties created by former U.S.
President Donald Trump’s “America First” policies, which have contributed to global trade instability. Furthermore, Von Der Leyen expressed the potential for India and the EU to become one of the defining partnerships of the century, particularly in the fields of trade, technology, and security. On the Indian side, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal engaged in discussions with European Union Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič regarding the ongoing progress of the FTA and the Trade and Technology Council. Goyal described the meeting as candid and insightful, and he expressed optimism about the future of the India-EU partnership.
