Hindus in Bangladesh demand justice amid increasing violence and threats

Friday, 16 August 2024

The Bangladesh Jatiya Hindu Mohajot (BJHM), a coalition of 23 Hindu organizations, announced on Tuesday that 278 Hindu families have experienced severe violence and vandalism in 48 districts since Sheikh Hasina stepped down as Prime Minister on August 5.

In a press conference at the National Press Club in Dhaka, BJHM leaders released data detailing the attacks on the Hindu community from August 5 to August 12. Despite having lived in Bangladesh for generations, they said the community remains in fear.

The BJHM, which describes itself as “politically neutral,” presented seven demands to the interim government led by Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus, calling for urgent action during this period of uncertainty.

“The repeated incidents of vandalism, looting, arson, land grabbing, and threats to leave the country against the Hindu community are not just attacks on individuals but on the Hindu faith itself,” said Palash Kanti Dey, spokesperson and executive secretary of the alliance.

Dey mentioned that concerns were shared with Brigadier General (ret.) M. Sakhawat Hossain, the interim government’s Home Affairs Advisor, who promised to address the issue in the next Cabinet meeting.

The alliance’s demands include a comprehensive judicial inquiry into recent communal attacks, the establishment of a Minority Protection Act and Commission, the repair of damaged Hindu temples and homes at public expense, a swift trial and public disclosure of investigation results, a report on minority persecution since 2000, a three-day holiday during the Durga Puja festival, and the creation of a Minority Ministry.

BJHM President Prabhas Chandra Roy criticized the pattern of attacks against Hindus whenever there is a government change. “Though such incidents were less frequent in the past, they have become more common recently. We want to live safely in this country where we were born and have rights,” he said.

Earlier this week, Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus visited the Dhakeshwari National Temple in Dhaka and assured community leaders that upholding human rights and freedom of speech is a top priority for his administration.

“Everyone has equal rights in this country. There should be no discrimination. Please be patient and judge us based on our actions. If we fail, then critique us,” Yunus said during his visit.

Hindus in Bangladesh demand justice amid increasing violence and threats

Asif Nazrul and A.F.M. Khalid Hossain, advisors on legal and religious affairs, accompanied Yunus. Yunus emphasized that, in a democratic spirit, citizens should not be seen as Muslims, Hindus, or Buddhists but as human beings. He also highlighted the need for institutional reforms to address underlying problems.

Religious Affairs’ Advisor Hossain condemned the attacks on minorities and assured that the interim government is committed to communal harmony. He noted that a list of damaged properties is being compiled and financial aid will be provided to victims.

The interim government, which took office on August 8, faces significant challenges as violence against Hindus continues. On Saturday, thousands of Hindus gathered in Chittagong to protest the attacks and demand safety and equal rights. The Bangladesh Hindu-Buddhist-Christian Oikya Parishad sent an open letter to Yunus expressing deep concern over the violence against minorities. The letter described the situation as dire, with many Hindu families displaced, temples attacked, and women assaulted.

Similarly, the Bangladesh Hindu Jagran Mancha organized rallies to protest the recent violence, arson, and looting targeting the Hindu community.

Trump claims right to personal attacks on Harris amid poll struggles

Former US President Donald Trump on Thursday asserted his right to launch personal attacks against his Democratic opponent, Kamala Harris. Trump expressed his anger towards Harris, accusing her of weaponizing the justice system against him and others, and stated that he is entitled to target her personally due to her previous remarks about him, including calling him “weird.”

Trump has persistently criticized Harris by questioning her ethnicity, mispronouncing her name, and disparaging her intelligence at various public events and on social media. His attacks come as he trails Harris in the polls after initially leading President Joe Biden until Biden’s withdrawal and endorsement of Harris.

Despite advice from allies and advisers to focus on policy issues like the economy and illegal immigration, where Trump holds a stronger position, he continues to engage in personal attacks.

During a news conference at his Bedminster

golf club in New Jersey, Trump elaborated on his grievances, claiming Harris’s personal attacks and actions justify his own derogatory remarks. He cited her use of the term “weird”

US welcomes Bangladesh’s focus on protecting minorities

The US State Department expressed support on Wednesday for the interim government in Bangladesh, praising its focus on “protecting members of minority communities.”

Indian-American Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi recently urged US Secretary of State Antony Blinken to engage with the interim Bangladeshi government to address the targeting of Hindus in the country.

Another Indian-American Congressman, Shri Thanedar, also wrote to Blinken to raise concerns about the persecution of Hindus and other minorities in Bangladesh.

“We welcome the interim government’s emphasis on restoring security and protecting minority communities,” said Vedant Patel, a US State Department

spokesperson, during the daily press briefing.

Patel added that the US is “in contact with our Indian partners and other regional countries to discuss recent developments in Bangladesh.”

When asked about Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming visit to Ukraine, Patel stated that the US supports “India’s involvement in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, particularly in efforts to achieve a fair and lasting peace that aligns with the goals of our Ukrainian partners, who are defending their territorial integrity and sovereignty.”

Regarding the potential for a 2+2 ministerial dialogue this year or later, Patel said, “I don’t want to speculate. What I can say is that our partnership with India is strong and continually growing, a sentiment shared by our colleagues at the Department of Defense. However, I don’t have any updates on specific meetings or engagements at this time.”

against him and her running mate Senator JD Vance as a trigger for his own insults.

The Harris campaign has utilized the term

“weird” to criticize Trump and Vance, a strategy that has seemingly provoked Trump and diverted his focus from key policy issues. This shift may benefit Harris among swing voters, particularly women, according to Peter Navarro, a former Trump adviser.

Kellyanne Conway, a former Trump campaign manager, recently advised Trump to focus more on policy contrasts rather than personal insults. However, Trump appears determined to define his opponent in stark, ideological terms as part of his campaign strategy.

US VP candidates agree to CBS debate on October 1

The US Vice-Presidential candidates, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Ohio Senator J.D. Vance, have confirmed their participation in a debate hosted by CBS News on October 1.

The debate will be moderated by Norah O’Donnell, anchor and managing editor of “CBS Evening News,” and Margaret Brennan, moderator of “Face the Nation” and CBS News chief foreign affairs correspondent.

CBS News announced on Wednesday that Walz had agreed to the October 1 date after initially proposing four potential dates for the debate. “See you on October 1, JD,” Walz, the Democratic VicePresidential nominee, wrote in a social media post on X.

Vance, the Republican Vice-Presidential nominee, confirmed his participation on X as well, stating, “I accept the CBS

debate on October 1 and the CNN debate on September 18. Looking forward to both!”

Former President Donald Trump selected Vance as his running mate on July 15 during the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee. President Joe Biden withdrew from the race on July 21 and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee. Harris then secured the Democratic nomination through a delegate vote in early August and announced Walz as her running mate on August 6.

Harris and Walz began their campaign tour on August 6, visiting key swing states like Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Michigan, Arizona, and Nevada.

Additionally, ABC has scheduled a presidential debate between Trump and Harris for September 10, marking the first major debate between the two main candidates before the November election.

As we celebrate India’s Independence Day on August 15th, a moment of pride and joy for the Indian community worldwide, we must also reflect on the dire situation unfolding in Bangladesh. The IndoUS Tribune extends its heartfelt congratulations to the Indian community on this significant day. However, the celebration is tinged with a somber note due to the horrific violence being perpetrated against the Hindu minority in Bangladesh, a crisis that demands our collective attention and action.

The violence against the Hindu minority in Bangladesh has escalated to alarming levels following the ouster of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on August 5th.

The resignation of Hasina, who has since fled to India, has unleashed chaos and violence, particularly targeting the Hindu community, which has historically been aligned with her secular Awami League party.

The IndoUS Tribune expresses its profound outrage at these atrocities,

which have seen homes, businesses, and temples systematically attacked across 45 out of 60 districts in the country.

This crisis is not just a political upheaval; it is an ethnic and religious tragedy. The Hindu community in Bangladesh, which makes up about 8% of the population, has been left vulnerable to retaliatory attacks by mobs, who have met little resistance from local authorities. The violence has not only resulted in the destruction of property but has also instilled deep fear within the community, reminiscent of the dark days of the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War, when Hindus were specifically targeted.

In response to these atrocities, global outrage has surged. Massive protests have been held in cities across the world, from London and Washington, D.C., to Tel Aviv.

Even as Israel faces its own wartime struggles, a protest was held in Tel Aviv against the ethnic cleansing of Bangladeshi Hindus, demonstrating the global solidarity against these

heinous acts. Protesters carried placards reading “Save Hindus” and “Hindu Lives Matter,” calling for immediate international intervention.

Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi has taken decisive action by sending an urgent letter to the U.S. State Department, highlighting the severity of the situation in Bangladesh. His letter underscores the fact that 45 of the 60 districts in Bangladesh have witnessed brutal attacks on Hindu homes, businesses, and temples. The call for immediate international intervention is clear and urgent, as the world cannot afford to stand by while such atrocities continue unchecked.

The situation has become increasingly sensitive, with protests in the UK and the USA drawing significant attention to the plight of Bangladeshi Hindus. In London, protesters gathered outside the Houses of Parliament, while in Washington, D.C., crowds assembled in front of the White House, demanding justice for the victims and an end to the violence.

The interim government in Bangladesh has condemned the attacks as “heinous” and claims to be working with community leaders to ensure the safety of Hindus. However, the reality on the ground tells a different story, as the Hindu community remains in a state of constant fear. The international community’s response must be swift and unequivocal, demanding accountability and ensuring that such horrors do not go unanswered.

As we celebrate India’s Independence Day, let us also stand in solidarity with the Hindu community in Bangladesh. The IndoUS Tribune pledges its unwavering support and commitment to bringing global attention to their plight. We call on all nations to raise their voices, demand justice, and work towards a world where no one has to live in fear because of their faith or ethnicity.

In solidarity, Best Regards, Dr. (H) Avi Verma, Publisher, IndoUS Tribune

Canadian MP calls on EAM Jaishankar, says relationship with India remains ‘very important’

Canadian Member of Parliament Chandra Arya, a prominent critic of the Justin Trudeau administration, met with Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar in New Delhi on Monday.

After the meeting, Jaishankar expressed his appreciation on social media, stating, “Delighted to meet Canadian MP Chandra Arya. As a genuine advocate of India-Canada friendship, I value his views and insights.”

Arya, known for his outspoken stance against the Canadian government’s asylum policies towards pro-Khalistani elements, emphasized the significance of the Canada-India relationship. He referenced comments made by the outgoing Canadian High Commissioner to India, who noted that “in the long term, Canada’s strategic interests and India’s strategic interests are absolutely aligned.”

Arya highlighted that economic relations

US backs India’s role in fostering peace in Russia-Ukraine conflict

The US has expressed support for India’s efforts to mediate in the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, according to Vedant Patel, Deputy Spokesperson for the US State Department. Patel made the comments on Wednesday in response to questions about potential upcoming travel by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Ukraine later this month. “I’ll leave it to the Prime Minister’s office to comment on his travel plans. I don’t have details to provide,” he said during his daily briefing.

“We are in close contact with our Indian partners on various issues and would welcome India’s involvement in the conflict, especially efforts aimed at achieving a just and lasting peace that respects Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty,” Patel added. Prime Minister Modi is expected to visit Poland and Ukraine from August 21 to 23, although no official announcement has been made yet. Previously, Modi visited Russia from July 8-9 for talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had expressed disappointment over Modi’s visit, calling it a “devastating blow to peace efforts.”

During his meeting with Putin, Modi discussed the impact of conflict on children, describing it as “heartwrenching” and expressing concern over the recent deaths of 37 children in a missile strike on a children’s hospital in Kyiv.

between the two countries, particularly Canadian investments in India, are thriving. He also noted the growing number of Indian professionals and international students in Canada. “We must do everything possible not only to maintain this but to elevate it to the next level,” he said.

Amid ongoing concerns about Canada’s hosting of extremist elements, India has warned that deteriorating relations could ultimately harm Canada. Jaishankar had previously criticized the Canadian government’s tolerance of separatism and terrorism, stating, “Freedom of speech

Maldives President Muizzu and Indian EAM Jaishankar reinforce strategic partnership during visit

Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening the long-standing relationship with India during a ceremony last week. Muizzu praised India as one of the “closest allies” and “invaluable partners,” acknowledging the country’s support and aid to the Maldives.

At the event, held at the President’s Office, Muizzu highlighted the completion of water supply and sewerage projects on 28 Maldivian islands. These initiatives were funded through India’s Line of Credit (LoC) facility provided by the Exim Bank of India. Muizzu expressed his deep gratitude to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Indian people for their generous assistance, which he noted would significantly boost local economies and contribute to the nation’s prosperity.

The President underscored that these High Impact Community Development Projects are milestones in the Maldives-India bilateral relationship and showcase both countries’ commitment to socioeconomic development. He also appreciated India’s flexibility in restructuring the LoC arrangement.

During the visit, External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar also met with Maldivian Defense Minister Mohamed Ghassan Maumoon to discuss enhanced security cooperation. Their talks focused on joint maritime security initiatives and maintaining regional stability.

Jaishankar, who also participated in a symbolic tree-planting ceremony with Maldivian Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer and Climate Change Minister Thoriq Ibrahim, emphasized the Maldives’ strategic importance in India’s foreign policy. He reiterated India’s commitment to the “Neighborhood First” policy and its Vision SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region).

“This visit is an opportunity to review our achievements and outline our future aspirations for a multifaceted partnership,” Jaishankar stated. He highlighted that both nations face shared challenges and need robust defense and security cooperation to address them effectively.

Jaishankar’s visit, his first since taking office for a second term, underscores the deep and enduring ties between India and the Maldives. The collaboration between the two countries reflects a mutual desire to enhance bilateral relations and address regional challenges together.

cannot be freedom to advocate violence or support separatism and terrorism in a foreign country.”

Jaishankar had condemned the activities of Khalistani extremists in Canada, including threats to Indian diplomats and vandalism at the Indian High Commission. “The government there should reconsider the entire situation,” he added.

Following recent incidents, including the vandalism of a Hindu temple in Edmonton, Arya stressed the need for Canadian authorities to address radicalism. He noted repeated attacks on Hindu temples and expressed concern over the growing anti-Hindu rhetoric. Arya urged Canadian law enforcement to take action to prevent this rhetoric from turning into physical violence against HinduCanadians.

“Like a broken record, I call on Canadian law enforcement agencies to take this issue seriously before these threats turn into physical attacks,” Arya wrote.

South Korea and US to launch major joint military drill next week

South Korea and the United States will kick off their annual Ulchi Freedom Shield (UFS) exercise next week, running from August 19-29. This large-scale military drill aims to enhance defense readiness in response to North Korean threats.

The exercise will feature computer simulations, field training, and civil defense drills, including a new scenario simulating a North Korean nuclear attack. The focus will be on countering threats such as North Korean missiles, GPS jamming, and cyberattacks. Approximately 19,000 South Korean troops will participate, alongside personnel from several UN Command member countries. The exercise will also include 48 field training events.

This drill comes amid ongoing tensions with North Korea, which has conducted multiple missile tests this year. North Korea has historically viewed these joint exercises as provocative, and South Korea’s military has been advised to prepare for potential provocations from the North.

Columbia University president resigns amid Israeli-Palestinian conflict tensions

Columbia University President Minouche Shafik has announced her resignation due to ongoing tensions related to the IsraeliPalestinian conflict.

Shafik’s resignation was effective Wednesday, and Katrina Armstrong, CEO of Columbia University Irving Medical Center, will serve as interim president, according to Xinhua news agency.

Shafik noted that overcoming divergent views within the Columbia community has been challenging, and the situation has taken a significant toll on her family. She has faced criticism for her handling of a campus encampment and testified before the House Committee on Education and the Workforce about antisemitism on campus in April.

Columbia University began restricting campus access on Monday, allowing only Columbia-affiliated individuals to visit.

As a British-American academic and economist, Shafik became the 20th president of Columbia University in July 2023. She is the third Ivy League president to resign amid campus protests related to Gaza, following Harvard and the University of Pennsylvania.

Shafik will lead a review of the British government’s approach to international development, according to her announcement.

Aplane that crashed last month in Glacier Bay National Park, Alaska, was a few hundred feet below a high ridge when it hit the mountainside, killing three people on board, according to an official preliminary report from the US National Transportation Safety Board. The 1948 Beechcraft Bonanza left Juneau on July 20 en route to Yakutat but crashed into the east side of Mount Crillon in the Fairweather Range, Xinhua news agency reported, citing the US National Transportation Safety Board.

The plane’s tracking signal ended at about 10,875 feet, 345 feet below the ridge top, according to the report, which also mentioned a forecast warning of clouds obscuring mountaintops in the area. An aerial search on August 5 discovered “portions of highly fragmented airplane wreckage” at approximately 6,200 feet, over 4,500 feet below the suspected crash site. The plane was found more than two weeks after the US Coast Guard had suspended a large-scale search. Clint Johnson, NTSB’s Alaska chief, stated that the report is preliminary. A more detailed report, including the probable cause of the crash, is expected next year.

US denies involvement in Bangladesh’s political crisis

The US has rejected allegations of its involvement in the political crisis in Bangladesh, including recent protests that have resulted in hundreds of deaths.

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre stated in a media briefing on Monday that reports suggesting US government involvement in these events are “simply false.” She emphasized that the future of the Bangladeshi government should be determined by the Bangladeshi people.

Jean-Pierre addressed protests outside the White House regarding violence against

Hindus in Bangladesh, stating that the US will continue to monitor the situation. She reaffirmed the President’s commitment to human rights but provided no specific details on engagement.

Bangladesh is facing a fluid political situation following Sheikh Hasina’s resignation as Prime Minister on August 5 amid protests, primarily led by students demanding an end to a quota system for government jobs. Protests against violence targeting minorities have also taken place outside the White House.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called for the protection of Hindus and other minorities in Bangladesh, expressing hope for a return to normalcy.

California Governor Newsom calls for immediate smartphone restrictions in schools

California Governor Gavin Newsom has urged all state school districts to implement smartphone restrictions in classrooms as the new academic year begins. In a letter to school leaders on Tuesday, Newsom highlighted the need to create an optimal learning environment and address growing concerns about excessive smartphone use among students, according to Xinhua news agency.

“Excessive smartphone use among youth is linked to increased anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues,” Newsom said, calling for immediate action to help students focus by limiting smartphone use. This call follows mounting evidence linking smartphone use to mental health issues. A Pew Research Center survey cited by Newsom found that 72% of high school teachers and 33% of middle school teachers reported cell phone distractions as a significant problem.

Research from Common Sense Media found that 97% of US students use their phones during the school day for a median of 43 minutes. Newsom referenced AB 272, a 2019 law granting school districts authority to regulate smartphone use during school hours. He encouraged districts to utilize this legislation, stating that reduced phone use in class leads to better concentration, academic outcomes, and social interactions.

The Governor also praised districts like Los Angeles Unified School District, Santa Barbara Unified District, and Bullard High School in Fresno for their successful implementation of smartphone restrictions. Newsom is working with the California legislature to further limit student smartphone use, emphasizing that there is no reason for schools to delay action. This initiative aligns with recent warnings from US Surgeon General Vivek Murthy about social media risks for youth.

Harvard settles lawsuit alleging it ignored sexual harassment

Harvard University has settled a significant lawsuit accusing the institution of overlooking sexual harassment claims against former professor John Comaroff. The lawsuit, filed by three graduate students who claimed Comaroff threatened their academic careers if they spoke out, was voluntarily dismissed on Wednesday following mediation.

The lawsuit drew national attention for detailed allegations of inappropriate behavior by Comaroff, including kissing, groping, and retaliatory threats. Comaroff, who retired earlier this year, has denied the allegations, calling them false.

The settlement terms are undisclosed. The plaintiffs’ law firm, Sanford Heisler Sharp, commended the students for their bravery in addressing the issue. Harvard and Comaroff’s representatives have not commented on the settlement. The case underscores the ongoing challenges of addressing sexual misconduct in academic settings.

Trump calls Harris a ‘radical left lunatic,’ Biden ‘close to vegetable stage’

DTrump criticized Harris, saying she is far more liberal than Senator Bernie Sanders. He claimed she would lead the country into chaos and criticized her stance on issues like defunding the police and fracking. Trump also attacked Harris’s tenure as San Francisco’s mayor and California’s Attorney General, suggesting she had a negative impact on both.

Since Biden’s endorsement of Harris as the Democratic nominee, Trump has fallen behind in the 2024 presidential race. Harris has energized the Democratic Party, attracted large crowds, and raised more funds, gaining a lead in the polls.

Trump also criticized Biden, describing him as “close to the vegetable stage” and questioning why he is allowed in public due to his physical condition.

Army sergeant pleads guilty to selling U.S. military secrets to China

Sgt. Korbein Schultz, a U.S. Army intelligence analyst, has pleaded guilty to charges of selling sensitive military information to China. Schultz admitted to providing dozens of documents on topics such as rocket systems and Chinese military tactics, in exchange for at least $42,000.

Schultz, who initially pleaded not guilty, changed his plea in federal court in Nashville on August 13. He faces sentencing on January 23, 2025. The indictment against him included charges of conspiring to disclose defense information and bribery.

Arrested in March at Fort Campbell, Schultz was charged with conspiring with an unnamed individual—referred to as “Conspirator A”—to disclose classified materials since June 2022. Schultz, who held a top-secret security clearance, was allegedly recruited for his access to sensitive information.

FDA sets new sodium reduction targets for packaged foods

The FDA has announced new goals to reduce sodium in packaged and processed foods by 20% over the next three years. This follows early successes from previous guidelines established in October 2021, which aimed to lower sodium intake to combat chronic diseases linked to high salt consumption.

The new target aims for an average daily sodium intake of 2,750 milligrams, which is 20% lower than pre-2021 levels but still above the recommended 2,300 milligrams. Major food companies, including PepsiCo, Kraft Heinz, and Campbell Soup, along with fast-food chains like McDonald’s and Taco Bell, are expected to be impacted by these guidelines.

The FDA reports that 40% of food categories have already met or are close to meeting the initial sodium reduction targets.

The indictment revealed that Schultz provided details on various military capabilities, including rocket systems and counter-drone tactics. His initial engagement involved sharing information on lessons from Russia’s war with Ukraine,

which led to further demands for more sensitive materials.

Brigadier General Rhett R. Cox of the Army Counterintelligence Command emphasized that the case serves as a warning for current and former Army personnel to report any requests for classified information promptly.

Trump’s interview with Musk marred by tech issues

Donald Trump’s highly anticipated two-hour interview with Elon Musk on X faced significant delays due to technical difficulties. Musk attributed the disruptions to a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack, though this claim could not be independently verified.

The interview, which eventually attracted up to 1.3 million listeners, allowed Trump to discuss a range of topics, including his criticisms of Democratic candidate Kamala Harris. Trump repeated various grievances and made several controversial statements, including unfounded claims about bacon prices and immigration. Despite his long-standing criticism of electric vehicles, Trump described Tesla’s electric cars as

“incredible.”

Musk, who has previously supported President Joe Biden but has shown support for Trump following an assassination attempt, did not challenge Trump’s claims during the interview. Musk has also initiated a super PAC to support Trump’s campaign, which is now under investigation in Michigan for potential violations related to gathering voter information.

40% of Biden’s major IRA manufacturing projects delayed, report finds

Asignificant portion of major manufacturing projects under President Joe Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) and the Chips and Science Act have faced delays, according to a Financial Times report. Approximately 40% of the largest investments announced in the first year of these initiatives have been delayed or paused. These acts, introduced in 2022, aimed to boost U.S. cleantech and semiconductor industries with over $400 billion in incentives.

The report highlights that out of more than $220 billion announced, $84 billion worth of projects are either delayed by months to years or paused indefinitely. Issues such as slow government rollout of funding and unclear IRA regulations

have contributed to these setbacks. For instance, Nel Hydrogen halted its $400 million factory project due to uncertainties over hydrogen tax credits, while Anovion delayed its $800 million battery parts factory by over a year because of unclear electric vehicle regulations. These delays raise concerns about Biden’s ability to meet his job creation promises.

FBI investigates Trump campaign’s claim of Iranian cyberattack

The FBI has confirmed it is investigating allegations from the Trump campaign that Iran was behind a recent cyberattack targeting its internal communications. The campaign disclosed the hack on August 13, claiming it was orchestrated by the Iranian government. This assertion follows a Microsoft report indicating foreign interference attempts in the 2024 US election, including a June incident where an Iranian military intelligence unit used a compromised email account to send a spear-phishing email to a senior campaign official.

Despite the Trump campaign’s allegations, no specific evidence linking Iran to the breach has been provided. The campaign’s claims are likely influenced by longstanding tensions between Trump and Iran. The FBI’s brief statement acknowledged the investigation but did not offer further details.

Muslim group sues US government over alleged discrimination against Palestinian Americans

AMuslim advocacy group has filed a lawsuit against the FBI and other US government agencies, alleging discrimination against two Palestinian Americans. The lawsuit claims Mustafa Zeidan was placed on the no-fly list, while Osama Abu Irshaid had his phone seized and was subjected to extra screening by federal agents.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) argues that these actions are unconstitutional and discriminatory. The lawsuit names leaders from the Homeland Security Department and State Department as defendants.

The FBI has declined to comment, maintaining that their lists are not based on race or religion. Human rights advocates cite increasing Islamophobia and anti-Palestinian sentiment in the US, exacerbated by recent Middle Eastern conflicts.

Father of murdered British Indian teen calls for inquiry into mental health care failures

DSanjoy Kumar, father of Grace O’Malley Kumar, a British Indian medical student who was murdered in Nottingham last year, has criticized the mental health care system for its failures in managing the attacker’s condition. Grace, 19, was killed alongside her friend Barnaby Webber by Valdo Calocane, who has pleaded guilty to manslaughter. A review by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) highlighted significant errors and omissions in the care provided to Calocane, who had a history of psychosis and medication issues.

Dr. Kumar and the victims’ families are now advocating for a statutory public inquiry to address systemic failures and improve mental health care practices. The CQC review, ordered by the former health secretary Victoria Atkins, found that the mismanagement of Calocane’s condition could have potentially prevented the attack. The families are pushing for accountability and reforms to ensure such tragedies do not occur in the future.

The party aims to challenge the perceived collusion between financial regulators and major corporations, following accusations of misconduct and conflicts of interest.

Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal announced that party workers will stage demonstrations at ED offices across state capitals, underscoring the party’s call for a JPC investigation and the resignation of SEBI’s chief. The Calcutta High Court has directed the state Health Department to refrain from appointing Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of R.G. Kar Medical College, to any medical college position until further notice. This decision follows the recent rape and murder case involving a junior doctor at R.G. Kar, which has drawn widespread attention and outrage.

Ghosh’s sudden resignation from R.G. Kar and his subsequent appointment as principal of the Calcutta National Medical College triggered protests and raised concerns about the handling of the case. The court’s decision reflects ongoing scrutiny and dissatisfaction with how the case has been managed, and the state Health Department will need to navigate this directive carefully.

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has announced a 24-hour nationwide withdrawal of medical services from 6 a.m. on Saturday, August 17, to 6 a.m. on Sunday, August 18, in protest of the rape and murder of a junior doctor at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9.

The shutdown will affect non-essential services, including routine outpatient departments (OPDs) and elective surgeries, while emergency care will continue.

IMA National President R.V. Asokan criticized the handling of the case by the medical college and Kolkata Police, leading to widespread protests. “This withdrawal is in

The Federation of Resident Doctors’ Association (FORDA) also announced it would resume its strike, citing ongoing issues and violence. FORDA expressed regret over the earlier decision to suspend the strike, acknowledging the distress it caused within the medical community.

Thousands to attend PM

Modi’s diaspora meet in New York next month

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to address the Indian diaspora in New York next month during his visit for the United Nations summit. The event, scheduled to take place at an open-air venue on Long Island, is expected to draw around 18,000 attendees and will celebrate the achievements of the Indian community in the US.

This approach follows past instances where Modi’s overseas rallies stirred political debate, ensuring that the focus remains on celebrating the diaspora’s contributions without domestic political implications.

Supreme Court denies interim bail to Delhi CM Kejriwal

The Supreme Court of India has refused to grant interim bail to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in connection with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) case related to the alleged excise policy scam. The court has issued a notice to the CBI and scheduled further hearings for August 23, but declined to release Kejriwal on interim bail at this time.

Kejriwal’s legal team argued that the Chief Minister was previously granted interim bail by the Supreme Court in a money laundering case, but was unable to be released due to the CBI’s “insurance arrest.” The Delhi High Court’s earlier decision, which denied bail and upheld the CBI’s grounds for detention, remains contested. The Supreme Court’s decision on Kejriwal’s bail request underscores ongoing legal battles related to this high-profile case.

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida announced on Wednesday that he will not seek re-election as president of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) in the upcoming September election. Kishida’s decision to step down follows a series of political scandals and declining public support, exacerbated by issues such as inflation and a weak yen.

During a news conference, Kishida explained that his departure was a necessary step to signify a new direction for the LDP. Despite his efforts to address corruption within the party and improve political fund management, his approval ratings have plummeted to a record low. Kishida’s resignation is aimed at facilitating a fresh start for the party and restoring public trust.

The election for the new LDP leader will determine the next prime minister. Candidates such as former LDP Secretary General Shigeru Ishiba and Digital Minister Taro Kono have already announced their intentions to run. The election date and process will be decided by LDP leaders in the coming week.

He pleaded guilty to charges of conspiring to support JeM and engage in violence against U.S. military forces.

The case highlighted the severe conditions he endured and influenced the sentencing recommendation.

TikTok has filed an appeal challenging a US law that requires its Chinese parent company, ByteDance, to sell its US assets or face a ban. The company disputes claims made by the US Department of Justice, arguing that the department has misrepresented its ties to China and overstated national security risks.

The law, signed by President Joe Biden, demands ByteDance divest TikTok by January 19 or face a ban. TikTok asserts that its content and user data are managed in the US by Oracle, and moderation decisions affecting US users are also made domestically. The appeals court is set to review the case on September 16, placing the decision’s timing close to the November 5 presidential election.

TikTok argues that the law infringes on its free-speech rights and criticizes the Justice Department’s claim that its content curation is not protected by the US Constitution. The law also impacts app stores and internet hosting services, restricting their support for TikTok unless the company divests.

Ex-Twitter board member sues Elon Musk’s X for $20 million

Omid Kordestani, a former executive chairman of Twitter, has filed a $20 million lawsuit against Elon Musk’s social media platform X. Kordestani claims that after Musk acquired Twitter and rebranded it as X, he refused to pay out more than $20 million worth of shares that were part of Kordestani’s compensation package. The lawsuit, filed in San Francisco’s California Superior Court, alleges that X is trying to benefit from Kordestani’s seven years

of service without fulfilling its financial obligations.

Kordestani joined Twitter’s board in 2015 and oversaw the company’s sale to Musk in October 2022. The lawsuit accuses Musk’s company of failing to meet its obligations and adding to a list of unpaid bills. This legal action follows another lawsuit involving former Twitter executives Parag Agrawal, Ned Segal, Vijaya Gadde, and Sean Edgett, who are suing Musk for $128 million in unpaid severance. They claim Musk vowed to withhold their severance payments when he took over the company.

The annual inflation rate for July fell to 2.9%, dipping below 3% for the first time since March 2021. This significant decrease could pave the way for a potential rate cut by the Federal Reserve next month.

The latest data marks a notable shift from the 8.6% inflation rate observed in June 2022, which had prompted a

series of interest rate hikes by the Fed. As inflation eases, President Joe Biden acknowledged ongoing economic challenges but emphasized progress, citing rising wages and efforts to tackle high prices through various policy measures.

With inflation becoming a focal point in the 2024 presidential election, both President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris are addressing the issue. Biden criticized large corporations for not doing enough to lower prices, while Harris is expected to outline her economic strategy in the coming week.

Apple allows developers to use in-app NFC transactions with fees

Apple has announced that developers can soon integrate near-field communication (NFC) contactless transactions into their iOS apps, moving beyond Apple Pay and Wallet. Apple emphasized its commitment to user privacy and security by utilizing advanced technologies like the Secure Enclave and biometric authentication for these transactions.

Venture capitalist Vinod Khosla has criticized Elon Musk’s recent climate change tutorial to Donald Trump, calling Musk’s explanations about CO2 levels “dumb.” Khosla argues that Musk’s focus on the discomfort caused by high CO2 levels overlooks the more serious risks of climate change associated with CO2 concentrations exceeding 500 ppm. He believes Musk’s approach fails to address the broader and more urgent climate threats.

Khosla also expressed frustration with Musk’s handling of the climate issue, suggesting that focusing on immediate human discomfort is misguided compared to the more severe long-term impacts of climate change. He accused oil and gas companies of hiding crucial climate research and stressed the need for greater transparency and urgency in addressing climate issues.

CAS rejects Vinesh Phogat’s appeal for shared silver; IOA president expresses shock

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has dismissed Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat’s appeal challenging her disqualification from the women’s 50kg final at the Paris Olympics. that they do not adequately consider the physiological and psychological pressures faced by athletes, especially female competitors.

The IOA is committed to supporting Phogat and is considering further legal avenues to challenge the decision. The association remains dedicated to advocating for fairness and justice in sports and protecting the rights and dignity of athletes.

MARKETS

The US market turmoil continued due to change in outlook from

goldilock to possible Fed error & soft landing or recession.

There have been wide swings in stocks, fear gauge VIX, bond yields, yen. High tech concentration in SP500 (LC-blend) is making it more volatile & it may soon become nondiversified (the LCgrowth became so in mid-2022).

Indexing phenomenon is making the big bigger. The questions about the US FED’s autonomy or independence are creating uncertainties. Most global markets, including INDIA, also sold off. Japan was very volatile.

PRIVATE-CREDIT is looking beyond the Western world to Asia ex China (US-China tensions), ex Japan (plenty of easy credit there) – so, mostly, Australia, INDIA, etc. Banks still dominate lending in Asia (79%) vs the US (33% only). Private-credit provides funds to companies that cannot tap bank

credit for various reasons.

A recent Barron’s story on Whole Foods (AMZN) & the fresh & healthy food revolution it launched in the US mentioned several Asian stores - H Mart (Korean), Patel Brothers (INDIAN), 99 Ranch (Chinese).

ECONOMY

CHINESE products keep coming to the US, tariffs & trade restriction notwithstanding. China has been stealthily tapping the US markets. Think Midea (bought German Kuka, etc) & Haier (bought GE Appliances) appliances, Anker & TenCent mobile games, Dirt Devil vacuums (Techtronic Industries), Geely (bought Swedish Volvo cars), Shein (low-priced retail), TikTok (ByteDance; banned in INDIA along with many other Chinese apps), Shenzhou (supplies Adidas, Nike), etc. Apple and Tesla have large manufacturing presence in China (although Apple is gradually shifting some operations to INDIA & elsewhere).

Chinese economy remains exportdriven, & it is finding indirect ways to ship products globally & evading tariffs & other restrictions. Several Chinese companies have set up production in Europe, Middle East, Lat Am, EMs, even in the US. There is also the huge Belt & Road Initiative (BRI, 2013- ) involving dozens of countries & international organizations (notably missing is INDIA). Several Chinese companies hit by nearterm by tariffs will eventually find ways around those tariffs. The US technology export restrictions didn’t hurt Huawei.

RETIREMENT

SOCIAL SECURITY needs fixing before 21% cuts in the SSA payouts are triggered in 2033. Both parties have differing plans for fixes, but neither wants to be specific about those before the election. Ad-hoc ideas like eliminating the Social Security tax for higher-income earners may harm Social Security. Conservative Heritage Foundation Project 2025 Report is another wild card (it wasn’t commissioned or endorsed by the GOP). A comprehensive SSA reform is urgently needed.

FUNDS

EM BONDS are attractive. Almost 60% of the EM debt is investmentgrade sovereign debt with spreads over the US Treasuries. The EM corporates and HY have wider spreads. The EM debt has sold off on concerns about the slowing global economy, and the EM localcurrency debt is more attractive now. Global EM indexes now include INDIAN bonds.

Several INDIA ETFs trading in the US were mentioned in a previous article. The biggest among these is the iShares INDA with the AUM of $11.15 billion. Its ER is 0.65%. It has about 70 large- & mid- cap holdings & the Top 10 holdings account for 37% of the AUM; it’s nondiversified.

FDA approves Neffy: A groundbreaking needle-free alternative to EpiPen for anaphylaxis treatment

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recently approved Neffy, the first epinephrine nasal spray designed to treat anaphylaxis, a severe and potentially life-threatening allergic reaction. This new treatment option offers a significant advancement in the management of anaphylaxis, providing patients with a needle-free alternative to the widely used EpiPen.

EpiPen: The Standard in Anaphylaxis Treatment

For many years, the EpiPen has been the primary treatment for anaphylaxis. It is an auto-injector device that delivers a life-saving dose of epinephrine (adrenaline) into the muscle, quickly counteracting symptoms like swelling, difficulty breathing, and a sudden drop in blood pressure. The EpiPen is designed for ease of use, allowing individuals to self-administer the drug quickly, even through clothing, in emergency situations.

Key Features of EpiPen:

• Delivery Method: Intramuscular injection via an auto-injector.

• Mechanism: Epinephrine works by relaxing the muscles in the airways, tightening the blood vessels, and reducing swelling.

• Availability: EpiPen is widely prescribed for individuals with severe allergies, ensuring they have access to emergency treatment at all times.

Neffy: A Needle-Free Alternative Neffy represents a major breakthrough by offering a nasal spray alternative to the traditional EpiPen injection. Developed by

ARS Pharmaceuticals, Neffy is designed to address the needs of individuals who may delay or avoid treatment due to a fear of needles, including children and adults.

Key Features of Neffy:

• Administration: Neffy is administered through a single spray into one nostril. A second dose can be given in the same nostril if symptoms do not subside.

• Effectiveness: Clinical studies have shown that Neffy delivers similar levels of epinephrine in the blood as injected epinephrine, with comparable improvements in critical measures such as

heart rate and blood pressure.

• Target Audience: Approved for use in adults and children who weigh at least 30 kilograms (about 66 pounds).

Implications of Neffy’s Approval

The approval of Neffy by the FDA is a significant development, particularly for individuals who fear needles or find it challenging to administer an injection. Dr. Kelly Stone, the associate director of the division of pulmonology, allergy, and critical care in the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, noted that “the availability of epinephrine nasal spray may reduce barriers to rapid treatment of anaphylaxis,” potentially saving more lives by ensuring quicker, more comfortable administration.

What Is Anaphylaxis?

Anaphylaxis is a severe allergic reaction that can be triggered by certain foods, medications, insect stings, or latex. It is a medical emergency that requires immediate treatment with epinephrine to prevent severe complications or death. Symptoms can escalate rapidly and include hives, swelling, difficulty breathing, vomiting, and loss of consciousness.

Neffy Nasal Spray: Side Effects and Considerations

While Neffy offers a promising alternative, it is not without side effects. Common side effects include throat

irritation, tingling in the nose, headache, and nasal discomfort. Additionally, Neffy may be less effective for individuals with certain nasal conditions, such as nasal polyps or a history of nasal surgery.

However, Kathy Przywara, vice president of community at the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, emphasized the potential benefits of Neffy, stating, “The needle-free device removes the fear of needle-based injections and may be easier to use. This may increase confidence among people managing life-threatening allergies.”

Conclusion

The introduction of Neffy provides a valuable alternative to the EpiPen, especially for those who are uncomfortable with needles or face difficulties in administering injections. With the FDA’s approval, Neffy expands the options available for managing anaphylaxis, potentially increasing the speed and ease with which individuals can access life-saving treatment. As more patients gain access to Neffy, it could play a crucial role in reducing the barriers to effective anaphylaxis management and saving lives.

Are smartphones frying our brains? Understanding the impact on brain health

The advent of smartphones has revolutionized the way we live, but it has also sparked concerns about their impact on our mental and emotional well-being. With constant notifications, social media updates, and endless opportunities for engagement, the question arises: Are smartphones frying our brains?

The Science of Smartphone Addiction

Smartphones are designed to be addictive. The constant stream of notifications, likes, and new content triggers the release of dopamine in the brain’s reward centers, similar to the effects of gambling. This continuous stimulation creates a craving, leading to compulsive behaviors like frequently checking our devices. Over time, this constant need for stimulation can rewire neural pathways, potentially limiting brain growth and plasticity.

The phrase “frying our brains” metaphorically captures the

overstimulation and potential harm caused by excessive smartphone use. The constant exposure to dopamine hits not only overstimulates the brain but may also atrophy the neural pathways responsible for empathy, emotional intelligence, and genuine human relationships. Our reliance on smartphones could be impairing our brain’s ability to function optimally in real-world social situations.

Mental Health and the Decline of Human Connections

The impact of smartphones extends beyond addiction, contributing to rising levels of anxiety, depression, and a decrease in meaningful human interactions. This effect is especially pronounced among young people, particularly adolescent girls, where increased screen time correlates with spikes in anxiety and depression. The instant gratification from likes and social media engagement leads to constant comparisons and unprecedented stress.

Moreover, the decline in face-to-face interactions diminishes our ability to form deep, empathetic connections. Digital interactions fail to engage the brain in the same way as real-

world socializing, leaving key regions of the brain underutilized. This lack of genuine human connection is concerning for brain health and emotional well-being.

Strategies for Healthier Smartphone Use

To counter the negative effects of smartphones, experts recommend several strategies:

1. Digital Detox: Taking long breaks from smartphones can help reset habitual behaviors and reduce the compulsive need to check devices.

2. Physical Activity: Engaging in regular physical activity, such as a simple 10-minute walk, can significantly reduce anxiety and depression levels while providing a natural mood boost.

3. Mindful Meditation and Conscious Breathing: These practices help activate the brain’s relaxation response, countering the stress from constant connectivity. Even a few deep breaths can initiate a calming effect on the body.

4. Reframe Anxiety: Rather than eliminating anxiety, view it as a tool for personal growth. Understanding and reframing anxiety can help manage stress and foster resilience.

By adopting these practices, we can mitigate the negative impact of smartphones on our brains and foster healthier relationships with our devices and the people around us. Understanding the effects of smartphone use is the first step toward ensuring that our digital habits enhance, rather than diminish, our mental and emotional well-being.
