Former President Donald Trump has stirred controversy by questioning the racial identity of Vice President Kamala Harris during a speech at the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) convention in Chicago.
In his remarks, Trump said, “She [Harris] was always of Indian heritage and she was only promoting Indian heritage. I didn’t know she was Black until a number of years ago when she happened to turn Black and now she wants to be known as Black.” Trump continued, “So, I don’t know, is she Indian or Black?... I respect either one but she obviously doesn’t.”
Harris, who is the first Black woman and Asian American to serve as Vice President, is the daughter of a Jamaican father and an Indian mother, both of whom immigrated to the United States. Throughout her career, Harris has been an advocate for civil rights and was a member of the Congressional Black Caucus during her time as a senator.
Michael Tyler, communications director for Harris’ campaign, responded sharply to Trump’s comments. “The hostility Donald Trump displayed on stage today is consistent with the hostility he has shown throughout his life, during his presidency, and in his current campaign for president,” Tyler said. “Trump has repeatedly made personal attacks and insults towards Black journalists, just as he failed Black families and left the country in disarray.”
White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre also condemned Trump’s remarks, stating, “It’s insulting and no one has any right to tell someone who they are or how they identify.”
India will not be a formal ally of the US but can have strong ties on the global stage, says Campbell
Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell has stated that India will “never be a formal ally or partner” of the United States, emphasizing that while India is a major power with its own interests and beliefs, the two nations can still cultivate a strong partnership on the global stage. During a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing on Tuesday, Campbell noted that not being a formal ally “doesn’t preclude us from having the strongest possible relationships as allied nations on the global stage.” He added, “I do believe that we have significantly influenced India’s trajectory in ways that align with our interests.”
Campbell underscored that the relationship with India is “probably the most important relationship for the United States to get right.” His comments reflect India’s policy of strategic autonomy, as articulated by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, emphasizing India’s approach to balancing its own interests with international partnerships.
Biden calls swap of prisoners a ‘feat of diplomacy’
On Thursday, Russia released American journalist Evan Gershkovich and former Marine Paul Whelan in what has been described as the largest prisoner exchange since the Cold War. The swap involved at least two dozen detainees from seven countries: the US, Norway, Germany, Poland, Russia, Belarus, and Slovenia. The deal, mediated by Turkey, was finalized at Ankara airport.
President Joe Biden praised the exchange, calling it a “feat of diplomacy.”
He highlighted that the negotiation led to the release of 16 individuals from Russia, including five Germans and seven Russians who were political prisoners.
“Some of these individuals have been unjustly held for years. All have endured
unimaginable suffering and uncertainty. Today, their agony is over,” Biden said.
He added, “I will not stop working until every American wrongfully detained or held hostage around the world is reunited with their family. My administration has now brought home over 70 such Americans, many of whom were in captivity before I took office.”
Evan Gershkovich, a 32-year-old Wall Street Journal correspondent, was arrested by Russian authorities in March 2023 on espionage charges and sentenced to 16 years in a high-security prison last month. Paul Whelan, a 54-year-old former Marine, was detained in December 2018 on similar charges and was serving a 16year sentence.
India and Vietnam unveil new plan to strengthen strategic partnership
Minister Narendra Modi announced on Thursday that India and Vietnam have adopted a “new plan of action” to enhance their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. This development is aimed at accelerating mutual growth and expanding cooperation under India’s ‘Viksit Bharat 2047’ and Vietnam’s ‘Vision 2045’.
During a press briefing with Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh at Hyderabad House in New Delhi, Modi highlighted several new initiatives, including increased collaboration in defense and security. He noted the inauguration of the Army Software Park in Nha Trang and the provision of a US$300 million credit line to bolster Vietnam’s maritime security. The two nations also agreed to intensify cooperation in counterterrorism and cyber security.
Modi and Chinh also held bilateral talks, followed by a luncheon hosted by Modi for the high-level Vietnamese delegation, which included several ministers and business leaders.

Biden calls swap of prisoners a ‘feat of diplomacy’
British-Russian dissident Vladimir Kara-Murza, who was sentenced to 25 years in prison on treasonrelated charges, was also released. President Biden was with the families of Whelan, Gershkovich, and KaraMurza at the White House while the exchange was taking place in Ankara, according to National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan.
Among those released was Vadim Krasikov, a Russian prisoner serving a life sentence in Germany for the 2019 murder of Zelimkhan Khangoshvili, a former Chechen separatist leader. Despite German reluctance to release him, reports indicate that Biden personally intervened and contacted Chancellor Olaf Scholz to facilitate the release.
India will not be a formal ally of the US but can have strong ties on the global stage, says Campbell
Campbell made these remarks in response to an interjection from Republican Senator James Risch, who criticized images of Prime Minister Narendra Modi embracing Russian President Vladimir Putin during a recent visit to Moscow. Despite this, Campbell acknowledged India’s significant role on the global stage, noting India’s “geographical location” and “historical connections” with Russia.
Campbell expressed optimism about India’s potential engagement in Ukraine, stating, “I think we’re likely to hear news of India engaging more directly in Ukraine. I’m grateful for that. I think India wants to play a responsible role globally.”
He emphasized the complexity of India’s position as a great power with its own priorities
and the unique appeal it holds in the Global South. “There are very few other countries that have such an appeal to the Global South, and their ability to engage there is unmatched. We are keen to work with them,” Campbell said.
Regarding US-India cooperation, Campbell highlighted support in intelligence and military areas, particularly along the Line of Actual Control with China and in the Indian Ocean. He acknowledged the ongoing tensions between Indian and Chinese troops, including a deadly clash in 2022.
Campbell also praised the Indian diaspora in the US, noting its role in strengthening ties between the two nations. He expressed confidence that most Indians desire a better relationship with the United States, appreciating the bipartisan efforts in education and technology collaborations.
Biden, Netanyahu discuss increased US military presence in Israel amid Iranian threats
On Thursday night, US
President Joe Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu discussed potential new deployments of American troops to Israel in response to Iranian threats of direct attacks.
In a statement following the call, the White House affirmed Biden’s commitment to Israel’s security against Iranian threats, including those from Iranian proxy groups such as Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Houthis. The President also highlighted the need to de-escalate broader regional tensions.
US Vice President Kamala Harris also participated in the call.
Meanwhile, the Israeli military has heightened its readiness following the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran on Wednesday.
Sources from the Israeli Defence Minister’s office indicated that, in response to Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei’s comments about potential retaliation, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) are preparing for any possible Iranian actions.
India and Vietnam unveil new plan to strengthen strategic
Modi emphasized the deepening of ties between India and Vietnam over the past decade, noting that their relationship has evolved into a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. He reported a significant rise in bilateral trade, which has increased by over 85%, and highlighted expanded cooperation in energy, technology, and development. Modi also mentioned improved connectivity with over 50 direct flights between the two countries, growing tourism, and the introduction of e-visa facilities.
He also praised the Archaeological Survey of India for its extensive work on the UNESCO heritage site of My Son Sanctuary in Quang Nam province, Vietnam. Modi invited Vietnamese citizens to visit India’s Buddhist circuit and encouraged Vietnamese youth to benefit from Nalanda University.
Since establishing the Comprehensive
partnership
Strategic Partnership during Modi’s 2016 visit to Hanoi, India-Vietnam relations have strengthened significantly. Modi reiterated Vietnam’s importance in India’s ‘Act East’ policy and Indo-Pacific strategy, emphasizing shared views on a free, open, rules-based Indo-Pacific and support for the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI).
To further solidify ties, the two countries have reached an agreement on digital payment connectivity between their central banks. Modi outlined future areas of focus, including green economy, emerging technologies, and the review of the ASEAN-India Trade in Goods Agreement to maximize trade potential. Both nations will also work on enhancing cooperation between their private sectors, small and medium enterprises, and start-ups. Earlier, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh was ceremonially welcomed at Rashtrapati Bhavan and paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at Raj Ghat.

South Korea and US conduct first-ever tabletop exercise on integrating nuclear and conventional forces
South Korea and the United States have conducted their inaugural tabletop exercise focused on integrating South Korea’s advanced conventional military forces with US nuclear capabilities. This exercise, aimed at enhancing responses to North Korea’s nuclear threats, took place this week at Camp Humphreys, US Forces Korea’s (USFK) base in Pyeongtaek, located 60 kilometers south of Seoul.
Named “Iron Mace 24,” the three-day exercise concluded earlier this week. This initiative follows the recent signing of a joint guidelines document on nuclear deterrence by the allies last month, as reported by Yonhap news agency.
The exercise was conducted under the framework of the Nuclear Consultative Group (NCG) guidelines, which focus on integrating capabilities to bolster extended deterrence. Extended deterrence is the US commitment to defend its allies using the full spectrum of its military capabilities, including nuclear weapons. South Korea, lacking its own nuclear arsenal, relies on this US security guarantee.
During the exercise, officials from
Top Hamas military leader eliminated last month, confirms IDF
The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) confirmed on Thursday that Mohammed Deif, a top Hamas military leader, was killed in airstrikes conducted by IDF fighter jets last month.
According to the IDF, the airstrike on July 13 targeted a location in Khan Yunis, Gaza. The strike, which was carried out based on detailed intelligence from Amman and the Israeli Security Agency, Shin Bet, successfully eliminated Deif, who was the head of Hamas’s military wing and the second-in-command of the organization. Deif was responsible for planning and executing the attack on October 7 of the previous year.
The operation was a collaborative effort between the IDF and Shin Bet. The airstrike also killed Rafe Salama, the commander of the Khan Yunis Brigade, along with other militants. Deif was known for orchestrating numerous attacks against Israel and played a key role in managing Hamas’s terrorist activities in Gaza.
The IDF noted that Deif worked closely with Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar and was instrumental in strengthening Hamas’s position in Judea and Samaria.
South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) and their US counterparts explored strategies to enhance extended deterrence. Discussions included joint planning for South Korean conventional forces to support US strategic operations in potential contingencies.
Participants, including South Korean officials involved in establishing a new “strategic command” and USFK personnel, agreed to continue these tabletop exercises to advance their
deterrence objectives.
The exercise comes amid North Korea’s intensified ballistic missile programs, aimed at enhancing its nuclear delivery capabilities. In response, the allies launched the NCG last year, as outlined in the Washington Declaration issued by South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol and US President Joe Biden during their summit in April 2023, to strengthen the credibility of America’s extended deterrence.
India protests death of fisherman to Sri Lanka after naval collision
India has lodged a strong protest with Sri Lanka following the death of an Indian fisherman in a collision between a Sri Lankan naval vessel and an Indian fishing boat. The incident occurred this week, about five nautical miles north of Katchatheevu Island.
Four Indian fishermen were aboard the vessel involved in the collision. One fisherman was killed, and another is missing, while two others have been rescued and brought to Kankesanthurai. A search operation is underway for the missing fisherman.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) summoned the Sri Lankan Acting High Commissioner in New Delhi to express India’s deep concern over the incident. The MEA emphasized the shock and anguish caused by the loss of life and reiterated India’s commitment to
addressing issues related to fishermen in a humane and humanitarian manner.
“The Sri Lankan Acting High Commissioner was called to the MEA this morning, where a strong protest was lodged. Our High Commissioner in Colombo will also address the matter with the Sri Lankan government later today,” the MEA stated.
The ministry instructed Indian Consulate officials in Jaffna to promptly assist the affected fishermen and their families in Kankesanthurai. It also underscored the importance of adhering to existing agreements between the two governments and ensuring that such incidents do not recur.
“The Indian government prioritizes the safety and security of its fishermen and has consistently raised these issues with Sri Lankan leadership at the highest levels,” the MEA added.
India urges nationals to evacuate Lebanon amid regional tensions
The Indian government has issued a strong advisory for all Indian nationals to leave Lebanon due to escalating regional tensions in the Middle East.
“In light of recent developments and potential threats in the region, Indian nationals are strongly advised against traveling to Lebanon until further notice,” stated the Indian Embassy in Beirut in its updated advisory.
The Embassy further urged all Indian citizens currently in Lebanon to evacuate immediately. Those who choose to stay are advised to exercise extreme caution, limit their movements, and maintain regular contact with the Indian Embassy in Beirut, which has provided emergency contact details.
This advisory follows recent regional conflicts, including an attack by Lebanese Hezbollah on Israel on July 27, which resulted in the deaths of 12 civilians, primarily children.
In response to the escalating situation, the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) reported the death of Fouad Shukur, a senior military commander of Hezbollah, in a targeted drone strike in Dahieh, a southern suburb of Beirut. Shukur was allegedly involved in the attack that killed the 12 children in Majdal Shams.
Additionally, Ismail Haniyeh, the head of the Hamas Politburo, was reported killed at his residence in Tehran early Wednesday morning. Haniyeh was in Tehran for the inauguration of Iran’s newly-elected President, Masoud Pezeshkian.

Rising tensions in the US Presidential Race 2024
Publisher
By Dr. Avi Verma, Publisher
As the US Presidential election approaches, the political landscape is becoming increasingly volatile.
Heated exchanges and personal jabs have dominated recent debates, transforming the political discourse into a contentious battle. The exchanges are not only intense but are also becoming personal, marking a new low in campaign decorum. The rhetoric from both sides is growing more combative, with accusations and insults flying freely.
Wooing Black Voters
One of the critical fronts in this electoral battle is the race to win over Black voters.
Vice President Kamala Harris has been particularly active in this area, leveraging her own heritage and track record to appeal to this crucial demographic. Her efforts appear to be paying off, with an uptick in support in key battleground states. Harris’s outreach includes policies aimed at addressing systemic racism, economic inequality, and healthcare disparities, issues that resonate deeply with Black communities.
Kamala Harris’s Uptick in Battleground States
Harris’s campaign has seen a significant boost in several battleground states, where her message of inclusion and progress is striking a chord with voters. Her ability to connect with diverse groups and address their unique concerns is proving to be a formidable strategy. This surge in support is critical as these states often decide the outcome of the
election.
Name Calling and Heated Exchanges
The campaign trail has been marred by name-calling and inflammatory remarks, particularly from former President Donald Trump. In a recent escalation, Trump questioned Harris’s racial identity, suggesting she has alternated between her Indian and Black heritage for political gain. Harris, unfazed by these attacks, has responded with a call for direct confrontation, challenging Trump to repeat his accusations on the debate stage.
GOP Caught Off Guard
The GOP machinery appears to have been caught by surprise with the last-minute replacement of the Democratic candidate at the top of the ticket. This unexpected move has forced the Republican campaign to recalibrate its strategy quickly. The Democratic National Convention, starting on August 19 in Chicago, is poised to solidify the new direction of the Harris campaign.
Upcoming US Tour and Running Mate Announcement
Kamala Harris is set to begin a nationwide tour with her soon-to-be-announced running mate, signaling that the official reveal is imminent. Speculation is rife about who she will choose, with the pool of candidates reportedly narrowed down to five. The selection is critical, as it will shape the final phase of the campaign and potentially sway undecided voters.
Trump’s Combative Stance
Donald Trump’s recent appearance at a conference of Black journalists was marked by combative and controversial remarks about Harris’s racial identity. His comments have sparked a backlash and further polarized the electorate. Trump’s questioning of Harris’s heritage reflects a broader strategy to undermine her credibility and appeal to conservative voters.
Impact of High Political Temperature
The heightened political temperature has several implications for the US political landscape. The intense and often negative campaigning can lead to increased voter fatigue and disillusionment. Polarization
may deepen, making it harder for the winning candidate to govern effectively post-election. Additionally, the constant barrage of attacks and counterattacks can overshadow substantive policy discussions, depriving voters of the opportunity to make informed decisions based on issues rather than personalities.
Where Do We Go From Here?
The path forward involves several key steps:
Restoring Civility: Both parties must work towards restoring a level of civility in political discourse. This will require a concerted effort from leaders to set a positive example and discourage personal attacks.
Focusing on Issues: Campaigns should prioritize policy discussions over personality clashes. Voters deserve to hear detailed plans on how candidates intend to address critical issues facing the nation.
Engaging Voters: Efforts to engage and educate voters on the electoral process and the importance of their participation must be intensified. This includes combating misinformation and encouraging informed voting.
Healing Post-Election: Regardless of the outcome, there will be a need for national healing. Leaders will need to bridge divides and work towards a united future, addressing the concerns and needs of all Americans.
As the election draws nearer, the intensity and stakes of the campaign continue to escalate. The upcoming announcement of Kamala Harris’s running mate and her subsequent tour of battleground states will be pivotal moments. Both parties are gearing up for a final push to win over voters, with every move and statement scrutinized and analyzed. The election promises to be one of the most fiercely contested in recent history, with far-reaching implications for the future of the nation.

US, British airlines halt flights to Israel amid rising regional tensions
United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and British Airways have temporarily suspended their flights to Israel in response to escalating tensions in the region, according to Israel’s state-owned Kan TV news on Thursday.
Delta Air Lines has announced that its flights will be suspended until Friday due to the ongoing conflict, while United Airlines has yet to specify a resumption date.
Both airlines, which operate routes between New York and Tel Aviv, stated they are closely monitoring the security situation to assess their future operations, as reported by Xinhua news agency.
Additionally, Kan TV reported that early morning flights from Munich to Tel Aviv by German carrier Lufthansa, and Vienna to Tel Aviv flights by Austrian Airlines, were redirected to Cyprus and Bulgaria.
Lufthansa issued a statement explaining that the diversions were a precautionary measure due to security activities, underscoring that the safety of passengers and crew is their highest priority.
Earlier this week, during his visit to Tokyo for the Quad Foreign Ministers’ meeting, Jaishankar emphasized the need to increase Japanese investments in India. He highlighted that Japan currently has 1,400 businesses operating in India and expressed a desire to see that number grow. The investment target set is 5 trillion yen (approximately $42 billion) by 2027.
Jaishankar noted Japan’s significant role in India’s economic and technological advancement and stressed that both nations would benefit from enhancing resilient and reliable supply chains, as well as transparent digital collaboration.
The EAM also remarked on the untapped potential of the India-Japan relationship, particularly in light of shifting global dynamics. He suggested that leveraging skilled Indian professionals in the Japanese economy could be mutually beneficial.
US reaffirms unwavering commitment to Israel’s security and right to self-defense
During a visit to the Philippines, US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin spoke with Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant about the recent attack on Israel by Lebanese Hizballah, which resulted in 12 civilian deaths, mostly children. The discussion centered on the threats from Iranian-backed terrorist groups and reaffirmed the US’s steadfast support for Israel’s security and its right to self-defense, according to Deputy Pentagon
Press Secretary Sabrina Singh. The officials also addressed ongoing diplomatic efforts to ensure safety for residents on both sides of the IsraelLebanon border. Earlier, the Israeli Defense Forces confirmed the targeted killing of Fouad Shukur, a senior Hezbollah commander, in a drone strike in Beirut. Shukur was linked to the missile attack that killed children in Majdal Shams. Additionally, Ismail Haniyeh, head of the Hamas Politburo, was killed in Tehran while attending the inauguration of Iran’s new president, Masoud Pezeshkian.
Joe Biden offers deep condolences for Wayanad landslides
President Joe Biden extended his deepest condolences to those affected by the catastrophic landslides in Wayanad, Kerala, on Thursday. In a statement, President Biden said, “Jill and I are deeply saddened by the tragic landslides in Kerala. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families during this difficult time. We also commend the courage and dedication of the Indian service members and first responders involved in the challenging recovery efforts. We will continue to keep the people of India in our thoughts.”
The landslides, which struck Wayanad late Tuesday night, have resulted in at least 281 deaths and over 200 people reported missing. The devastation has obliterated numerous habitations. A major rescue operation is underway in the four hardesthit areas of Wayanad—Churalpara, Velarimala, Mundakayil, and Pothukalu— enlisting the help of the armed forces, police, disaster relief agencies, fire services, local volunteers, and residents. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan stated that the army has informed him there is no hope of finding more survivors in the most severely affected areas.
Iraq holds US-led coalition responsible for repercussions of airstrike in Baghdad
Iraq has held the US-led coalition responsible for the consequences of an airstrike on Iraqi paramilitary Hashd Shaabi Forces in Babil province, south of Baghdad, Iraqi military spokesman Yahya Rasoul announced on Wednesday.
Rasoul condemned the coalition forces for what he described as a “heinous crime and blatant aggression” following an attack on military bases belonging to the Iraqi security forces in northern Babil province late Tuesday night. The strike resulted in casualties among the Hashd Shaabi forces, including both deaths and injuries.
He warned that such attacks could severely disrupt efforts to combat the Islamic State (IS) group in Iraq and Syria and could potentially escalate into broader conflicts in the region. Rasoul emphasized that Iraq would pursue appropriate legal and diplomatic actions to safeguard its rights and maintain its security and sovereignty.
Earlier on Tuesday night, an Interior Ministry source reported that unidentified drones targeted a Hashd Shaabi military
base in the Jurf al-Nasr area of northern Babil province. On Wednesday, the al-Jazira Operations Command of the Hashd Shaabi forces accused the United States of carrying out three drone strikes on the paramilitary 47th Brigade in Jurf al-Nasr, resulting in the deaths of four fighters, including a commander named Ahmed Najam Abdul-Zahra.
Additionally, the Iraqi militia Kataib Hezbollah claimed that the US drones were launched from Kuwait and called on the Iraqi government to take decisive measures to end the presence of US-led coalition forces. The militia also urged Iraqi lawmakers to adopt a firm stance on expelling American troops from Iraq.

9/11 mastermind and two co-defendants agree to guilty pleas, Pentagon confirms
Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the mastermind behind the September 11, 2001 attacks, and two of his accomplices have agreed to plead guilty, the Pentagon announced on Tuesday.
The three defendants, who are being held at the US military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, have entered into pretrial agreements, according to the Pentagon. The Convening Authority for Military Commissions, Susan Escallier, confirmed the agreements with Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, Walid Muhammad Salih Mubarak Bin ‘Attash, and Mustafa Ahmed Adam al Hawsawi. Details of the agreements remain confidential at this time.
The three men, along with Ali Abdul Aziz Ali and Ramzi Bin al Shibh, were initially charged and arraigned together on June 5, 2008, and faced additional charges in a second arraignment on May 5, 2012, in connection with their roles in the 9/11 attacks.
US Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell criticized the plea deals, calling them a “national disgrace.” On X, McConnell condemned the Biden-Harris Administration, stating, “The plea deal with terrorists, including those behind the 9/11 attacks, is a revolting abdication of the government’s responsibility to defend America and provide justice.”
Vance blames Harris for illegal immigration during Arizona
During a visit to the U.S.-Mexico border in Arizona on Thursday, JD Vance, Donald Trump’s running mate, criticized Vice President Kamala Harris for failing to address illegal immigration. Vance claimed Harris, in her role as “border czar,” had done nothing to manage the situation and accused her of allowing migrants to overwhelm U.S. schools and hospitals.
Vance argued that Harris should have worked with federal agencies to tackle illegal crossings, though Harris was primarily focused on addressing migration from Northern Central America. He also criticized her policies for allegedly allowing fentanyl to enter the U.S., despite most traffickers being U.S. citizens.
Harris, in response, has supported a bipartisan Senate border security bill that Republicans rejected. Despite record migrant crossings under President Biden, numbers have decreased since new border restrictions were implemented in June.
Utah Supreme Court declines to reinstate abortion ban for now
IndoUS Tribune Newsdesk
On Thursday, Utah’s Supreme Court decided not to lift the suspension on a near-total abortion ban while a lower court evaluates a challenge from Planned Parenthood. In a 4-1 ruling, the court upheld Third Judicial District Judge Andrew Stone’s decision to block the law during the ongoing legal review. The majority opinion noted that Planned Parenthood’s challenge raises “serious issues concerning (the law’s) constitutionality.”
The case will proceed with Judge Stone continuing to oversee it. Planned Parenthood’s President, Kathryn Boyd, expressed cautious optimism, stating, “While we celebrate this win, we know the fight is not over,” and expressed hope that the law will ultimately be struck down.
Utah Attorney General Sean Reyes expressed disappointment but reiterated the state’s commitment to defending the law in court, promising a “vigorous defense.”
The legal battle began when Planned Parenthood filed a lawsuit in June 2022, claiming that the abortion ban infringes on women’s rights to bodily integrity and privacy under Utah’s constitution. Judge Stone’s preliminary injunction halted
enforcement of the ban while the case is considered.
The ban, enacted as a “trigger law” in 2020, was designed to take effect if the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the nationwide right to abortion established in Roe v. Wade. Following the Court’s reversal on June 24, 2022, Utah moved to enforce the ban, leading to this legal dispute.

New York appeals court upholds gag order against Trump in hush money case
ANew York state appeals court on Thursday upheld a gag order imposed on Donald Trump in his hush money criminal case. The decision by the Appellate Division in Manhattan prevents Trump from publicly commenting on individual prosecutors and others involved in the case until he is sentenced by Justice Juan Merchan on September 18, just seven weeks before the November 5 election.
Trump’s legal team contends that the gag order violates his First Amendment rights. They have also renewed their call for Judge Merchan to recuse himself, citing his daughter’s work as a Democratic political consultant and her connections with Kamala Harris, who is expected to be the Democratic presidential nominee. Previously, Merchan had rejected similar recusal requests.
The court’s ruling emphasized that the gag order was necessary to protect those involved in the case from potential threats and harassment. The order permits Trump to speak about Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg and Judge Merchan but restricts his comments regarding court staff, witnesses, and jurors.
Trump was convicted in May on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records related to a $130,000 payment made to adult film actress Stormy Daniels,
intended to prevent her from speaking about a past alleged sexual encounter with Trump before the 2016 election—a claim Trump denies. He faces up to four years in prison, though such sentences are rare for first-time offenders in similar cases. Trump has vowed to appeal his conviction following his sentencing.
Court argued that Planned Parenthood lacked standing to sue, but the court disagreed, supporting the organization’s right to represent its patients. Chief Justice Matthew Durrant dissented, citing concerns over third-party standing under Utah law.
Since the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2022 decision, over 20 Republican-led states have enacted or significantly tightened abortion restrictions, leading to numerous ongoing legal challenges.
US court halts Biden administration’s net neutrality rules
On Thursday, a U.S. appeals court issued a temporary block on the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) reinstatement of net neutrality rules. The decision came after the Sixth Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals expressed that broadband providers likely have a strong chance of succeeding in their legal challenge against the rules.
The FCC had voted in April to restore the open internet regulations initially adopted in 2015 but rolled back under President Trump. The court’s ruling suspends the new rules while legal arguments are scheduled for late October or early November.

Panel recommends suspension of Trump ally Clark’s law license
AWashington legal panel recommended on Thursday that Jeffrey Clark, a former senior U.S. Justice Department official under Donald Trump, should have his law license suspended for two years due to his dishonesty in attempts to overturn the 2020 election results.
The three-member committee of the District of Columbia Board on Professional Responsibility found that Clark acted with “extraordinary recklessness” by attempting to send a false letter in December 2020 and January 2021, alleging that the Justice Department had identified issues with election integrity.
The panel’s recommendation will be reviewed by the full D.C. Board on Professional Responsibility and subsequently by a Washington appeals court. Unlike the D.C. Office of
U.S. Justice Department finds Texas violated juvenile detainees’ civil rights
The U.S. Justice Department revealed on Thursday that Texas has repeatedly violated the civil rights of youths in five detention centers. The investigation, which began in October 2021, uncovered the excessive use of force, including frequent pepper spray usage, failure to protect against sexual abuse, and discrimination against children with disabilities.
The report highlighted issues such as the routine use of solitary confinement, including an instance where a child named Abigail was held in isolation for eight days. It also exposed a troubling environment of sexual abuse, inadequate staff accountability, and poor training.
The five facilities investigated were Evins Regional Juvenile Center, Gainesville State School, Giddings State School, McLennan County State Juvenile Correctional Facility, and Ron Jackson State Juvenile Correctional Complex. While no consent decree was announced, Justice Department officials met with Texas state officials to discuss necessary reforms.
The Texas Juvenile Justice Department stated it is committed to improving conditions and has already implemented measures such as hiring more mental health professionals and enhancing staff training and salaries. The department has been under conservatorship since 2007 due to ongoing issues.
Disciplinary Counsel’s recommendation for Clark to lose his law license entirely, the panel’s proposal stops short of revocation.
Clark’s conduct was deemed less severe than that of former Trump lawyers John Eastman and Rudy Giuliani, who also faced ethics charges for their efforts to
challenge the election results. Clark, who was considered by Trump for the position of acting attorney general in the final days of his presidency, denies violating ethics rules. His legal team described the ethics case as “unlawful on many grounds” and criticized its intrusion into confidential discussions between Justice Department officials and Trump.
Colorado wildfire claims one life as California blaze surges to historic levels
Arapidly spreading wildfire in the Rocky Mountain foothills of Colorado has resulted in at least one death and destroyed five homes near Rocky Mountain National Park. The Stone Canyon Fire, located about 20 miles north of Boulder, has burned over 1,500 acres since Tuesday and was 20% contained by Thursday evening, according to the Boulder Office of Disaster Management. Evacuation orders for the town of Lyons and surrounding areas were lifted on Thursday afternoon.
In California, wildfire activity has surged dramatically compared to last year, with fires burning 29 times more acreage, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire). The Park Fire, the largest in the state, has consumed over 600 square miles (1,550 square km) as of Thursday morning, making it the fifth largest fire
in California’s history. Nearly 6,000 firefighters are battling the blaze in a remote area of the Central Valley, about 90 miles north of Sacramento. The fire has destroyed 437 structures and damaged 42.
The Quarry Fire near far southwest Denver has also been active, burning 420 acres and threatening nearby homes. Firefighters are working to contain it and protect residences.
Governor Jared Polis has activated the Colorado National Guard to aid in recovery efforts amid the state’s challenging wildfire conditions. The national wildfire season has seen an intense start, stretching firefighting resources thin. To address this, the National Interagency Fire Center has requested assistance from firefighters in Australia and New Zealand, who will begin arriving on August 7 to support efforts in Oregon and Washington.
Delta CEO reveals $500 million cost of IT outage
Delta Air Lines CEO Ed Bastian disclosed that the recent IT outage, which occurred earlier this month, has cost the airline approximately $500 million. Bastian explained that this total encompasses not only lost revenue but also “tens of millions of dollars per day” in compensation and hotel expenses incurred over five days, according to Xinhua news agency. The outage, which lasted through July 25, resulted in the cancellation of more than 5,000 flights. It was triggered by a problematic software update from CrowdStrike, which led to widespread disruptions of Microsoft systems globally.
This incident was an unusual occurrence for Delta, and the airline’s slower recovery compared to other carriers has prompted a US Department of Transportation investigation. According to the airline, Delta’s systems responsible for coordinating flight crews with planes were unable to adapt to the ongoing changes, causing additional disruptions. In an interview with CNBC on Wednesday, Bastian stated that Delta plans to seek compensation for the damages incurred, saying, “We have no choice.” As of now, CrowdStrike has not offered financial assistance to Delta, and a spokesperson for CrowdStrike stated they were “unaware of any lawsuit and had no further comment.” Microsoft has not yet responded to requests for comment, CNBC reported.
Bastian emphasized the need to safeguard the interests of shareholders, customers, and employees, highlighting not only the financial costs but also the reputational damage to the airline.

US continues to expect accountability from India on assassination bid
The United States has reiterated its expectation for accountability from India concerning the alleged involvement of an Indian government employee in a failed assassination attempt against a Sikh separatist on US soil last summer.
In November of the previous year, US federal prosecutors charged Indian national Nikhil Gupta with collaborating with an Indian government employee in a thwarted plot to assassinate Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, a Sikh separatist with dual American and Canadian citizenship, in New York. Gupta, who was arrested in the Czech Republic in June last year, was extradited to the US on June 14.
State Department Deputy Spokesperson Vedant Patel stated, “We continue to expect accountability from the government of India regarding the alleged role of an Indian government employee in the failed attempt to assassinate a US citizen on US soil that occurred last summer.” Patel added that the US continues to address its concerns directly with senior Indian officials.
India has denied these allegations but has formed an internal investigation team to review the claims. Patel declined to
comment on a news report suggesting that Canadian authorities have arrested five Indian nationals for planning to target a Sikh separatist at a wedding ceremony, directing inquiries about this matter to the

Indian lawyer struck off UK solicitors’ register for ‘sham marriages’ conviction
A44-year-old Indian lawyer has been removed from the UK solicitors’ register by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) following a tribunal’s review of his conviction for organizing sham marriages for migrants seeking to settle in Europe.
Mathew Moghan Rajamohan Chellam, who qualified as a lawyer in India, faced disciplinary charges by the SRA. The tribunal’s ruling, dated July 5, highlighted that Chellam had breached professional obligations by engaging in fraudulent activities for monetary gain. His actions, including orchestrating sham marriages to exploit immigration laws, were deemed to have caused significant harm to the reputation of the legal profession.
According to the tribunal’s judgment, Chellam had returned to India, and his current address was unknown. The tribunal ordered his removal from the roll of solicitors and imposed costs totaling GBP 4,058. The tribunal noted that Chellam’s misconduct, driven by financial
gain, involved careful planning and direct control over the fraudulent activities.
Admitted to the UK Roll of Solicitors in February 2013 through the Qualified Lawyers Transfer Test (QLTT) as he was already a legal advocate in India, Chellam was convicted in September 2016 at Snaresbrook Crown Court in London. His convictions included assisting unlawful

The family is now seeking assistance from the Indian and Punjab governments to facilitate the return of the bodies to India.
Ranjit Singh Somal and his brother Mandeep Singh, the children’s parents, are deeply distressed. Mandeep Singh’s son Rajpreet Singh Somal is also settled in Canada.
Harman Kaur had been in Canada for about five years, while Navjot had arrived there recently on April 17. The Somal brothers regret allowing their children to go to Canada, where they struggled with the new lifestyle despite their initial hopes for a better future.
Ranjit Singh expressed his anguish, stating, “We used to talk to Navjot and Harman almost every day. They often complained about difficulties adjusting to life in Canada. Though I urged my son to return if he was unhappy, we never anticipated such a tragic outcome.”
Rajpreet Singh Somal has mobilized the Punjabi community in Canada to help fund the repatriation of the bodies. Fatehgarh Sahib MP Dr. Amar Singh Boparai has contacted Foreign Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar, who has assured that efforts will be made to expedite the process of bringing the bodies back to India.

The tribunal concluded that Chellam’s actions constituted severe criminal offenses and caused extensive damage to the legal profession’s reputation.
An Indian-origin woman was sentenced to ten years in prison by a court in south-west England after being convicted of extensive fraud and shoplifting. Narinder Kaur, also known as Nina Tiara, 54, was found guilty of 26 counts of fraud, money laundering, and perverting the course of justice in March 2023.
Prosecutors revealed that Kaur engaged in large-scale shoplifting and defrauded retailers by obtaining refunds for items she had not purchased. At Gloucestershire Crown Court, she was sentenced for stealing from over 1,000 shops across the UK.
Steve Tristram, a fraud investigator from West Mercia Police’s Economic Crime Unit, remarked, “This sentence today sends out a clear message that West Mercia Police will deal seriously with prolific fraudsters.” Tristram described Kaur as a calculated individual who showed no remorse for her actions and attempted to deceive the court with false documents. The investigation into Kaur began in 2018, involving a multi-agency approach with the UK’s National Business Crime Solution and other police forces. The investigation uncovered fraudulent activity in Kaur’s bank accounts, leading to her conviction.
Kaur was found to have traveled extensively
across the UK, stealing from high street stores and falsely claiming refunds. Between July 2015 and September 2019, she allegedly obtained around GBP 2,000 in refunds weekly, totaling over half a million pounds in fraudulent refunds and stolen goods.
She also attempted to defraud other businesses using stolen credit card details. In March 2023, she was convicted of fraud, possessing and transferring criminal property, and perverting the course of justice at Gloucester Crown Court. The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) West Midlands used financial data, retail records, witness evidence, and CCTV footage to establish her pattern of offending.

NSCN-IM reiterates demand for separate flag and constitution amid Naga political issue
The Isak-Muivah faction of the National Socialist Council of Nagalim (NSCN-IM) has reaffirmed its demand for a separate flag and constitution for Nagalim, rejecting the Indian Constitution. The NSCN-IM asserts that the 2015 Framework Agreement (FA) with the Indian government acknowledges Nagalim’s unique history and sovereignty, and that a distinct flag and constitution are integral components of this agreement. The group criticized the Indian government for not fully implementing the FA’s provisions, arguing that the historical context and sovereignty of Nagalim are not adequately recognized. They emphasized that the agreement represents a commitment to a shared-sovereignty principle and should be upheld as such.
The NSCN-IM plans to observe the ninth anniversary of the FA on August 3, 2024, viewing it as a testament to the Indian government’s recognition of Nagalim’s aspirations. The organization remains firm in its demands for a separate flag, constitution, and integration of Naga-inhabited areas across multiple northeastern states.
Netizens criticize Rahul Gandhi’s visit to Wayanad as a ‘Fashion Show’ amid crisis

BJP leader Shivam Tyagi took to X (formerly Twitter) to denounce Gandhi’s visit, describing it as a spectacle with 232 cameras and 20 guards, and suggesting that it was more about polishing his image than addressing the needs of the affected communities. Other users echoed this sentiment, with one user expressing disapproval over what they perceived as a photo opportunity in the wake of the disaster.
In response, Gandhi and Vadra met with victims’ families, offered condolences, and pledged to assist in the recovery efforts. Gandhi emphasized his commitment to supporting the people of Wayanad, while Priyanka Gandhi assured that the Congress party would provide all necessary help. The landslides have severely impacted four villages, with ongoing rescue operations facing challenges due to continuous heavy rainfall.

Thakur’s remarks, which included comments about the Leader of Opposition and a criticism of the caste-based census, have intensified the dispute. In a televised address, al-Houthi condemned the assassination of Haniyeh as a gross violation of international norms and a blatant disregard for human rights. He also criticized the Israeli airstrike in Beirut, which he termed a “dangerous escalation.”

Algeria withdraws ambassador from France over Western Sahara autonomy recognition
Algeria has decided to recall its ambassador from France immediately in response to France’s recognition of Morocco’s autonomy plan for Western Sahara, the Algerian Foreign Ministry announced. The ministry condemned the French government’s endorsement of what it termed a “colonial reality” imposed on Western Sahara, a stance it claimed was unprecedented among French administrations.
The ministry accused France of making this decision “with great disdain and indifference” and without adequately considering its implications. It criticized the French support for Morocco’s plan as a violation of
international legitimacy and an affront to the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination. Additionally, the ministry argued that France’s position undermines the UN’s efforts to complete the decolonization of Western Sahara and shirks its responsibilities as a permanent member of the UN Security Council.
As a result, Algeria will be represented in France by a charge d’affaires. French President Emmanuel Macron had previously recognized Morocco’s 2007 plan to grant autonomy to Western Sahara under Moroccan sovereignty in a letter to Moroccan King Mohammed VI. The move has further strained the long-standing rivalry between Algeria and Morocco over the disputed territory.

Storms disrupt high-speed rail in France, affecting 80,000 travelers
Severe storms have disrupted traffic on the LGV South-East high-speed rail line, which connects Paris and Lyon, causing significant delays for approximately 80,000 passengers. The storms caused several trees to fall onto the tracks in the Yonne department of central France. One of these trees struck a TGV high-speed train, leading to a power outage and immobilizing trains on the line.
The French National Railway Company (SNCF) reported that efforts are underway to clear the debris and restore service, but trains are currently stranded. Passengers are being taken to stations to ensure their safety and comfort. This disruption follows a similar incident on the Paris Olympic Games opening day when arson attacks affected other highspeed rail routes, though the South-East line was spared due to thwarted malicious acts.

India’s small and medium enterprises advised to exercise caution in dealings with Chinese firms
The Indian Embassy in Beijing has issued a cautionary advisory for Indian small and medium enterprises (SMEs) regarding business transactions with Chinese companies. The advisory highlights recurring issues faced by Indian businesses when dealing with Chinese entities and recommends several precautionary measures.
Indian SMEs are advised to contact the Indian Embassy or consulates in Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Hong Kong to verify the credentials of any Chinese business entity before entering into agreements. Verification requests should be sent to com.beijing@mea.gov.in, ccom.beijing@ mea.gov.in, hoc.shanghai@mea.gov. in, com.guangzhou@mea.gov.in, and commerce.hongkong@mea.gov.in, with responses typically provided within 4-5 working days.
For significant transactions, the advisory suggests consulting a Business Service Company to obtain a report on the Chinese entity’s transparency, financial stability, reputation, and credentials. Additionally, it is recommended that
Parents of motorcyclist killed in crash with Tesla sue company, alleging defects in Autopilot
The parents of a motorcyclist killed in a 2022 crash involving a Tesla Model 3 on Autopilot have filed a lawsuit against Tesla and the vehicle’s driver, claiming that the driver assistance software and safety features are “defective and inadequate.” Landon Embry, 34, died at the scene after the Model 3, operating on Autopilot at 75-80 miles per hour, collided with his Harley Davidson motorcycle, throwing him from the bike.
According to the lawsuit filed in Salt Lake City state court last week, the driver of the Model 3 was “tired” and “not in a condition to drive as an ordinarily prudent driver.” The complaint alleges that the Autopilot system’s sensors, including cameras, “should have identified the hazard posed by Decedent’s motorcycle.” It further argues that a “reasonably prudent driver” or an adequate auto braking system should have been able to avoid the collision.
Tesla has not yet commented on the lawsuit. This case adds to the growing scrutiny of Tesla’s driver assistance systems, including Autopilot and Full Self-Driving. Earlier this year, a Tesla Model S in “Full Self-Driving” mode was involved in a fatal accident with a 28-year-old motorcyclist in the Seattle area.
Indian companies collect and retain copies of the Chinese entity’s Resident Identity Card and passport of key representatives.
The embassy notes that trade disputes frequently involve companies from Shandong, Hebei, Guangdong, Jiangsu, and Zhejiang provinces, urging extra caution with firms from these areas.
The advisory includes annexures detailing common issues, a checklist for precautionary measures, typical deceptive practices by some Chinese entities, and a list of Chinese firms involved in trade disputes with Indian companies from 2009 to April 2024. The advisory is available on the Indian embassy’s official X (formerly Twitter) account.
US national debt surpasses $35 trillion for first time
The US federal government’s total public debt has surpassed $35 trillion for the first time, raising new concerns about the nation’s growing debt crisis and its impact on the economy. According to the latest Daily Treasury Statement released by the Treasury Department, the national debt reached $35 trillion on Friday.
This milestone comes just seven months after the US debt surpassed $34 trillion in December 2023, and three months after it exceeded $33 trillion. Maya MacGuineas, president of the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, criticized the continuous increase in borrowing, stating, “The borrowing just keeps marching along, reckless and unyielding.” She emphasized the urgent need for serious action on the debt, particularly in election years.
Chip giant Intel to lay off 15,000 employees and cut spending by $10 billion
Intel announced on August 2 that it will lay off about 15,000 employees, representing roughly 15% of its workforce, as part of a cost-cutting measure. The company plans to reduce spending by $10 billion by 2025 following poor quarterly earnings and a challenging financial outlook.
CEO Pat Gelsinger indicated that these layoffs are necessary to address high operational costs and low margins, particularly in light of stagnant revenue growth and the need to better capitalize on trends like AI.
The company will offer retirement packages and voluntary departure programs to manage the workforce reductions. Intel reported a 1% decline in revenue for the second quarter compared to the previous year.
US Fed keeps interest rates unchanged, hints at September cut
The Peter G. Peterson Foundation reported that the national debt of $35.001 trillion equates to nearly $104,000 per US citizen. The foundation attributed the deficits to structural factors such as an aging population, rising healthcare costs, and an insufficient tax system. Desmond Lachman from the American Enterprise Institute warned of the “unsustainable” budget deficit and its potential effects on the dollar and longterm inflation.
Economists and financial experts have expressed deep concerns. E.J. Antoni of the Heritage Foundation highlighted that interest payments on the national debt now represent 76% of all personal income taxes collected. Elon Musk and BlackRock CEO Larry Fink have also raised alarms, with Fink urging global attention to rising deficits and their implications for interest rates and inflation.
On August 1, the US Federal Reserve decided to keep its interest rates unchanged at 5.25%-5.5%, maintaining a 22-year high. The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) noted that while inflation has eased, it remains above the 2% target.
The Fed hinted at a possible rate cut in September, depending on future economic data. Fed Chair Jerome Powell acknowledged improvements in inflation but did not make definitive plans for future rate changes. The Fed will also continue reducing its holdings of Treasury and mortgage-backed securities. Powell suggested that the economy is nearing the point where a rate cut might be appropriate if inflation continues to trend downward.

Bank of Japan hikes policy rate and reduces bond purchases
On July 31, the Bank of Japan (BOJ) raised its policy rate to 0.25% from a previous range of 0-0.1%, marking its first rate hike since February 2007. This decision follows a shift away from its negative interest rate policy, which ended in March.
In addition, the BOJ will cut its monthly government bond purchases to 3 trillion yen (around $20 billion) from 6 trillion yen by March 2026. This move aims to normalize monetary policy amid a weakening yen.
After the announcement, the yen briefly rose to its highest level in over four months against the U.S. dollar. The BOJ emphasized that these changes are necessary to achieve a sustainable 2% inflation target and indicated that further rate increases could occur based on future economic conditions.
Toyota receives first corrective order for falsified test data
Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism issued a corrective order to Toyota Motor Corporation on July 31, following revelations of improper vehicle testing procedures. Initially discovered in June, the issue involved falsified performance test data for seven models, leading to the suspension of production for three models.
An investigation by the ministry uncovered further malpractice involving seven additional models. Toyota President Koji Sato was summoned and instructed to implement fundamental changes within a month to prevent future incidents. This is Toyota’s first corrective order under the amended Road Transport Vehicle Act of 2019, and the company must provide quarterly progress reports.
Boeing names new CEO to steer turnaround amid safety crisis
Boeing has appointed Kelly Ortberg as its new president and CEO, effective August 8, 2024, following a thorough search for a leader capable of navigating the company’s current challenges. Ortberg, a seasoned aerospace executive with over 30 years of experience, including a significant tenure at Rockwell Collins, is tasked with reviving Boeing’s jet production and restoring trust with regulators and the public. His appointment led to a 2.9% increase in Boeing’s share price before the market opened.
The appointment comes amid a severe crisis for Boeing, triggered by a January 5 midair incident involving an Alaska Airlines-operated 737 Max 9 jet, which led to a $1.4 billion loss in the second quarter. This accident contributed to the resignation of former CEO Dave Calhoun and intensified scrutiny on Boeing’s safety practices, which had already been under pressure following previous crashes in 2018 and 2019.
In response to the ongoing issues, the U.S.
Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has restricted Boeing’s 737 Max production to 38 jets per month and mandated a comprehensive plan to address systemic quality-control problems. Despite submitting a plan in May, Boeing is not expected to immediately resume higher production levels, which has further strained the company’s financial situation.
Ortberg’s experience in aerospace and defense, combined with his reputation as
a tough negotiator and effective leader, has been met with positive reactions from analysts. However, Boeing’s broader struggles, including a significant downturn in its defense and space business, which reported billions in losses due to cost overruns, continue to impact the company’s financial health. Boeing CFO Brian West has forecasted that the company will burn cash throughout 2024 due to reduced jet deliveries.

Morgan
Former England captain Eoin Morgan has endorsed Brendon McCullum as the ideal candidate to succeed Matthew Mott as England’s white-ball head coach. Morgan expressed confidence that McCullum could handle both his current role with the Test team and the white-ball coaching role.
Mott resigned after two years, during which England failed to defend their ODI and T20 World Cup titles. Marcus Trescothick will serve as interim white-ball head coach for the upcoming series against Australia.
Morgan highlighted McCullum’s credentials: “Brendon McCullum is one of the best coaches in the world. His impact on the England Test team has been significant, and he is wellsuited to the white-ball role.”
Morgan noted that the position requires a highly experienced coach due to the importance of World Cup and Champions Trophy wins. Although Morgan’s name was also suggested for the role, he has ruled himself out, citing personal reasons.

US judge overturns $4.7 billion verdict against NFL in ‘Sunday Ticket’ lawsuit
ACalifornia judge has overturned a $4.7 billion verdict against the National Football League (NFL) in a lawsuit alleging that the league overcharged subscribers to its Sunday Ticket broadcasts for over a decade. U.S. District Judge Philip Gutierrez, based in Los Angeles, ruled that the verdict was unjustified and resulted from a “runaway” jury. The NFL welcomed the decision, asserting that its media distribution model offers fans a range of options to enjoy the game.
Lawyers representing the subscribers have not yet commented on the ruling.
“Sunday Ticket” is the exclusive option for NFL fans wishing to view out-of-market games. Subscribers claimed that prices for the service were artificially inflated to limit subscriptions and protect the distribution rights fees paid by broadcast networks for local game broadcasts.
In his 16-page ruling, Judge Gutierrez dismissed the testimony from two key witnesses for the subscribers and stated that the jury’s damages verdict was “clearly not supported by the evidence and must be vacated.”
The decision, which grants judgment in favor of the NFL, can be appealed to the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco.
The jury’s June 27 verdict had found that the NFL’s restriction of “Sunday Ticket” allowed DirecTV to charge inflated prices as
its former sole distributor. DirecTV was not part of the trial. The jury awarded $4.6 billion for 24.1 million residential subscriptions over the 12-year class period and $96.9 million for approximately 506,780 commercial subscriptions for bars and restaurants.
The NFL argued in court that the damages were “nonsensical” given the evidence considered by the jury and denied that subscribers were overcharged. In response, the subscribers contended that the NFL’s arguments were based on “pure conjecture” and maintained there was no evidence suggesting the jury relied on disregarded evidence.
Under U.S. antitrust law, damages awards can be tripled, potentially raising the value of the verdict to $14 billion.
Katie Ledecky becomes most decorated female Olympic swimmer of all time
In a remarkable display of her enduring prowess in the swimming pool, Katie Ledecky has officially become the most decorated female Olympic swimmer of all time. On Wednesday, July 31, at the Paris La Défense Arena, Ledecky won gold in the women’s 1500m freestyle, breaking her own Olympic record with a time of 15:30.02. This victory was not only a testament to her skill but also added to her impressive tally of Olympic medals. “I was thrilled with the time,” Ledecky said after the race. “In my previous swims, it felt like the times didn’t reflect my effort as much as I hoped. This was the first one where the time really showed what I felt. Winning a gold medal is never easy, so I’m just enjoying every moment.”
Ledecky dominated the 1500m freestyle from the start, establishing a significant lead within the first 300 meters. France’s Anasta-
siia Kirpichnikova took silver with a time of 15:40.35, while Germany’s Isabel Gose secured bronze. This gold medal brought Ledecky’s Olympic medal count to 12, including eight golds, equaling the record set by American swimming great Jenny Thompson. Ledecky also holds both the world and Olympic records in the 1500m freestyle. Earlier in the week, she won a bronze in the 400m freestyle and will compete in the 800m freestyle event.
In addition to her individual achievements, Ledecky cemented her status as the most decorated female swimmer by winning silver in the 4x200m freestyle relay. Alongside teammates Claire Weinstein, Paige Madden, and Erin Gemmell, Ledecky helped the U.S. team finish second behind the Australian quartet of Mollie O’Callaghan, Lani Pallister, Brianna Throssell, and Ariarne Titmus, who took gold with a time of 7:38.08.

Paris Olympics: Italian boxer quits bout with opponent who failed gender test
Italian boxer Angela Carini withdrew from her bout with Algerian Imane Khelif in the women’s 66kg round of 16 at the Paris Olympics after just 46 seconds. Carini’s decision was influenced by Khelif’s previous failure in a gender eligibility test. Overcome with emotion, Carini did not shake hands with Khelif after the referee declared Khelif the winner. She was heard saying, “It’s not right.”
Khelif, who had elevated testosterone levels, was disqualified from the Women’s World Championships in India last year for not meeting eligibility criteria. The International Olympic Committee (IOC), overseeing the Paris boxing events, confirmed Khelif’s disqualification from the World Championships but stated that all athletes in Paris comply with the competition’s eligibility regulations.
Carini, who experienced a painful start to the match, decided to stop due to her discomfort, explaining that she wanted to preserve her well-being. She expressed disappointment but emphasized that she did not wish to judge Khelif.
Khelif, for her part, remains focused on competing for gold. The IOC has reiterated that all boxers at the Paris Games are in accordance with the event’s eligibility and entry regulations.

Transform your life with timeless lessons from the Bhagavad Gita
We all have our darkness our fears, doubts, insecurities and our light—our strengths, passions, and talents. We must choose which one we want to nurture and which we want to overcome.
Once upon a time, in the bustling city of Dwaraka, a young man named Arjun found himself at a crossroads. He was overwhelmed by the pressures of his career, relationships, and the relentless pursuit of success. One day, seeking solace and guidance, he wandered into an ancient library where an old, wise librarian named Krishna invited him to sit.
“Tell me, Arjun,” Krishna began, “what troubles your heart?”
With a knowing smile, Krishna pulled out a timeworn book the Bhagavad Gita. “This ancient text has guided many souls. Let me share its wisdom with you through five teachings that can transform your life.”
1. Perform Your Duty Without Attachment to Results
Krishna opened the book to a familiar verse: “Your right is to perform your duty, but never to its fruits. Let not the
Desing and artwork by Rakesh Malhotra from Pause-Tivity
fruits of action be your motive, nor your attachment be to inaction.”
Arjun frowned. “What does this mean?”
Krishna explained, “Focus on your actions, not the outcomes. You find true satisfaction when you do your best without obsessing over success or failure. Let go of the anxiety tied to results.”
Ma karmaphalahetbhurmra te sango ‘stvakarmani || Bhagavad Gita 2.47”
2. Find Balance and Equanimity
Turning the pages, Krishna continued, “The Gita teaches that maintaining balance in success and failure, pleasure and pain, is key to inner peace.”
Arjun remembered his highs and lows, the rollercoaster of emotions. “Balance sounds impossible,” he sighed.
Krishna chuckled. “It’s challenging but not impossible. Practice viewing life’s events with a calm mind. This equanimity helps you stay grounded and resilient.”
Tato yuddhaya yujyasva naivan papam avapsyasi || Bhagavad Gita 2.38”
3. Embrace Your Dharma
“What’s Dharma?” Arjun asked, curious. Krishna smiled. “Dharma is your true calling, your duty in life. The Gita emphasizes understanding and embracing your unique path rather than imitating others.”
Arjun thought of his passion for art, often overshadowed by societal expectations. “So, following my heart is important?”
“Absolutely,” Krishna affirmed. “Pursue what you’re meant to do. It brings fulfillment and aligns you with the universe’s flow.” “ßfZ¹ff³ÀU²f¸fûÊ dU¦fb¯f: ´fSX²f¸ffʰÀU³fbdâ°ff°fÜ ÀU²f¸fZÊ d³f²f³fÔ ßfZ¹f: ´fSX²f¸fûÊ ·f¹ffUWX:Ý”
Finally, Krishna shared, “The Gita teaches that uncontrolled desires lead to suffering. Master your desires, and you master your life.”
Arjun reflected on his constant cravings for material success. “How can one control desires?”
Krishna said, “By practicing mindfulness and contentment,” appreciating what you have and focusing on inner growth will cause desires to lose power over you.
Epilogue: Arjun’s Transformation Arjun left the library with a lighter heart and a clearer mind. Over time, he applied these teachings, finding peace in his actions, balancing his emotions, and joy in his true calling. He served others selflessly and tamed his desires, transforming his life.
Years later, he returned to the library with a serene smile. “Thank you, Krishna. “The Bhagavad Gita truly is a timeless guide.”
Krishna, now frail but wise as ever, nodded. “Remember, Arjun, the journey of self-discovery and growth is continuous. Keep the Gita’s teachings close to your heart.”
So, Arjun continued his journey, living the wisdom of the Bhagavad Gita and inspiring others to find their path.
In our fast-paced world, the teachings of the Bhagavad Gita remain profoundly relevant. We can navigate life with peace and purpose by performing our duties without attachment, maintaining balance, embracing our true calling, serving selflessly, and mastering our desires. Let the Gita be a guiding light on your journey.

MARKETS
US market ROTATION to smallcaps (SCs) & cyclicals continues. Reasons may be lower inflation & interest rates, rising SC revenues & the upcoming Fed rate cuts. Large AI capex has been a drag on big tech earnings when the expectations remain high & that may pressure the SP500.
Expanding INDIAN stock market & recent stock rally will lead to 20%+ weight for India in the MSCI EM Index next month; about a decade ago, it was only 6-7%. The Indian government bonds have recently been included
in the JPM Global EM & Bloomberg EM Local Currency Government indexes. These developments should benefit the Indian capital markets.
Reelection of the European Commission (EC) President Ursula LEYEN is good for the EU. She has been a good crisis manager. The European stocks are also cheaper than the US stocks & there are several attractive European companies.
The CHINESE PBOC cut rates to provide a boost to the weak economy. But there weren’t any major developments at the “Third Plenum”, a meeting of senior leaders that is held about every 5 years.
ECONOMY
The US elections may have a profound impact on the FEDERAL RESERVE. Issues: Fed’s dual mandate, Fed independence, whether the new Administration would be hands-OFF or handsON, & the Fed Chair appointment in 05/2026.
Marc CHANDLER (Bannockburn/FFBC) notes that the supply of DOLLARS isn’t just from the US, but also from other countries that get dollars from trade. The dollar is overvalued now, but the current US fiscal policies
are negative for the dollar, & the US fiscal & monetary policies haven’t been in sync. The Fed may start cutting rates in 2024 & the easing cycle may last through 2026 with the total cuts of about 2% (i.e. the fed funds in the range 3.253.50%). Falling dollar will benefit the US exporters, the US holders of foreign funds, the foreign issuers of the dollar-denominated debt, Eurozone, & EMs.
Thinktank Heritage Foundation’s PROJECT 25 document (900+ pages) is a wish list of hardcore conservatives. It has become an election issue, but it hasn’t been endorsed by TRUMP or the GOP. It covers many areas: Eliminating Fed’s dual mandate; eventual elimination of the Fed; slashing Medicaid (especially, LTC for the poor); return to the gold standard; freewheeling banking, etc.
RETIREMENT
The IRS has issued the final SECURE 2.0 that has good & bad news for INHERITED IRAs (& 401k/403b). The good news is clarity in very confusing rules & that minor children include stepchildren & foster children. The bad news is that most nonspouse beneficiaries (designated-noneligible) must resume annual RMDs starting in 2025 if the RMDs had begun but empty the account in the 10th year.
If the RMDs had not begun, then designated-noneligible beneficiaries must empty the account in 10 years in any way they like.
Charles BLAHOUS (George Mason U & Hoover/Stanford) said that both the right & the left are wrong about SOCIAL SECURITY. The solution to underfunding is that the payroll tax receipts & the benefit payments need to be aligned. If nothing is done, then there will be sudden & substantial cuts in benefits around 2035.
FUNDS
Higher inflation is bad for ALLOCATION 60-40 portfolios, according to BoA. The stocks & bonds have higher correlations now, & in 2022, both tanked. Adding alternatives to the 60-40 mix (i.e. multi-asset funds) may improve performance.
Alison SHIMADA (Allspring EMGAX) said the Fed rate cuts & weakening dollar will benefit the EMs. She likes China, INDIA, Turkey, Brazil. India is a positive long-term story, but it’s important to get the sectors & companies right in this expensive market. PM MODI had to form a coalition government, so he will have to scale down his ambitious plans.

Understanding Alzheimer’s disease: Diagnosis, symptoms, and management
By: Dr Avi Verma, MD(h)
Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that affects memory, thinking, and behavior. It is the most common cause of dementia among older adults, leading to a decline in cognitive function severe enough to interfere with daily life. Understanding its diagnosis, symptoms, treatment options, and preventive measures is crucial for managing and potentially mitigating its impact.
Diagnosis of Alzheimer’s Disease
Diagnosing Alzheimer’s involves several steps to rule out other causes of cognitive impairment and to determine the extent of cognitive decline. The process typically includes:
1. Medical History and Physical
Exam: A comprehensive review of the patient’s medical history, family history of dementia, and a physical examination to assess overall health.
2. Cognitive and Neuropsychological Tests: These tests evaluate memory, problem-solving skills, attention, language, and other cognitive abilities. The Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) are commonly used tools.
3. Laboratory Tests: Blood tests help rule out other potential causes of memory loss and confusion, such as vitamin deficiencies or thyroid problems.
4. Brain Imaging: MRI or CT scans can identify brain abnormalities, such as strokes, tumors, or structural changes associated with Alzheimer’s disease.
5. Neurological Examination: This includes testing reflexes, coordination, muscle tone, and strength to assess the functioning of the nervous system.
6. Biomarker Tests: Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis and positron emission tomography (PET) scans can detect amyloid-beta plaques and tau tangles, which are hallmarks of Alzheimer’s disease.
7. Blood Tests for Alzheimer’s: Recent advancements have led to the development of a simple blood test that detects Alzheimer’s disease with up to 90% accuracy by measuring levels of Plasma Phospho-Tau217, a biomarker linked to Alzheimer’s pathology. This test can identify the disease even before symptoms appear and has shown promise in routine health care settings, providing a less invasive and more accessible diagnostic tool compared to traditional methods.
Symptoms of Alzheimer’s Disease Alzheimer’s disease progresses through several stages, with symptoms becoming more severe over time. Common symptoms include:

Beauty & Fashion
Fast fashion vs. sustainable fashion: Which one to choose?
In recent years, the fashion industry has faced growing scrutiny over its impact on the environment and human rights. The debate between fast fashion and sustainable fashion has become increasingly prominent, compelling consumers to weigh their choices more carefully. Fast fashion, characterized by its rapid production cycles and low-cost garments, stands in stark contrast to sustainable fashion, which emphasizes eco-friendly practices and ethical production. This essay explores the merits and drawbacks of both approaches, offering a comprehensive analysis to help consumers make informed decisions.
Fast Fashion: A Double-Edged Sword
Fast fashion refers to the quick turnaround of runway trends into affordable clothing, allowing consumers to purchase the latest styles at a fraction of the cost. This model thrives on a high volume of production and consumption, with brands like Zara, H&M, and Forever 21 exemplifying the fast fashion phenomenon. The primary allure of fast fashion lies in its accessibility and affordability, making it possible for individuals to keep up with trends without breaking the bank.
However, the rapid pace of fast fashion comes with significant environmental and ethical costs. The industry is notorious for its massive carbon footprint, largely due to the extensive use of synthetic fabrics, such as polyester, which are derived from petrochemicals. Additionally, the demand for quick production often leads to poor working conditions and low wages in manufacturing countries. Reports of child
labor and unsafe working environments in factories underscore the human cost of cheap clothing. Furthermore, the disposable nature of fast fashion encourages a throwaway culture, with garments often ending up in landfills after only a few wears.
Sustainable Fashion: A Commitment to Ethics and Environment
In contrast, sustainable fashion advocates for a more mindful approach to clothing production and consumption. This model prioritizes environmentally friendly materials, ethical labor practices, and durability. Brands that embrace sustainability often use organic or recycled fabrics, such as organic cotton, hemp, or recycled polyester, and focus on reducing waste through innovative production techniques. Additionally, sustainable fashion supports fair wages and safe working conditions, reflecting a commitment to human rights.
The benefits of sustainable fashion are manifold. Environmentally, it aims to reduce the fashion industry’s carbon footprint and lessen the strain on natural resources. The use of recycled materials and slower production cycles help mitigate pollution and waste. Socially, sustainable fashion promotes fair labor practices and supports artisans who often work in more equitable conditions compared to those in fast fashion factories.
Despite its advantages, sustainable fashion is not without challenges. It often comes with a higher price tag due to the costs of ethical production and premium materials. This can limit accessibility for some consumers and may contribute to
a perception of sustainability as a luxury rather than a standard. Additionally, the market for sustainable fashion is still growing, and it may be difficult for some consumers to find brands that align with their values.
Making an Informed Choice
Choosing between fast fashion and sustainable fashion involves considering various factors, including personal values, budget, and the impact on the environment and society. While fast fashion offers immediate gratification and affordability, its long-term consequences on both the planet and workers cannot be overlooked. Sustainable fashion, though potentially more expensive, aligns with a growing movement towards ethical consumption and environmental stewardship.
Consumers can navigate this choice by adopting a more thoughtful approach to their shopping habits. Opting for quality over quantity, supporting brands that prioritize sustainability, and being mindful of garment care can help mitigate the impact of their fashion choices. Additionally, second-hand shopping and clothing swaps offer alternative ways to embrace fashion responsibly without compromising on style.
Tea vs. coffee: A health showdown between the world’s favorite brews
In the realm of popular beverages, tea and coffee stand out as two of the most consumed drinks worldwide. Both offer unique flavors, cultural significance, and a range of health benefits. However, they also have distinct characteristics that may influence their relative healthiness. This essay examines the health implications of tea and coffee by analyzing their nutritional profiles, health benefits, potential risks, and overall impact on well-being.
Nutritional Profiles
Tea and coffee both contain bioactive compounds that contribute to their health effects. Tea is rich in polyphenols, particularly catechins, which have antioxidant properties. Green tea, in particular, is known for its high levels of epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), a compound associated with various health benefits. Tea also contains L-theanine, an amino acid that can promote relaxation and improve cognitive function. Coffee, on the other hand, is a major source of antioxidants, primarily chlorogenic acids. It contains caffeine, which can enhance alertness and improve physical performance. Coffee also has a variety of micronutrients, including B vitamins, potassium, and riboflavin. Both beverages, therefore, offer significant antioxidant benefits, albeit through different compounds.
Health Benefits
1. Cardiovascular Health
Both tea and coffee have been studied for their effects on cardiovascular health. Research suggests that moderate tea consumption may lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of stroke and heart disease. Green tea, in particular, has been linked to improved cholesterol levels and vascular function.
Coffee has also been associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular disease, potentially due to its high antioxidant content. Some studies suggest that moderate coffee consumption can reduce the risk of stroke and coronary artery disease. However, excessive coffee intake may lead to increased blood pressure in some individuals.
2. Metabolic Health
Tea and coffee can positively impact metabolic health. Green tea has been linked to enhanced fat oxidation and improved glucose metabolism, potentially aiding in weight management and reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes. Additionally, tea polyphenols may help regulate blood sugar levels.
Coffee’s impact on metabolic health is also noteworthy. It may improve insulin sensitivity and reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes. The caffeine in coffee stimulates metabolism and can increase energy expenditure, which might aid in weight control.
3. Cognitive Function
Both beverages have cognitive benefits. The caffeine in coffee is well-known for its ability to enhance concentration, alertness, and memory. Regular coffee consumption has been associated with a lower risk of neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.
Tea, particularly green tea, also
supports cognitive function. The combination of caffeine and L-theanine in tea can improve attention and cognitive performance. Additionally, the antioxidants in tea may protect against cognitive decline.
Potential Risks
Despite their benefits, both tea and coffee can have potential risks, especially when consumed in excess.
1. Caffeine-Related Issues
Coffee’s high caffeine content can lead to issues such as insomnia, jitteriness, and increased heart rate in sensitive individuals. Excessive caffeine intake may also cause digestive problems and exacerbate anxiety.
Tea generally contains less caffeine than coffee, but it can still contribute to similar issues if consumed in large quantities. Additionally, certain types of tea, like black
tea, can have significant caffeine levels, especially when brewed strongly.
2. Bone Health and Iron Absorption
Both tea and coffee can affect bone health and iron absorption. High consumption of coffee has been linked to decreased bone mineral density, potentially increasing the risk of fractures. Tea, especially when consumed in large amounts, can also inhibit iron absorption due to its tannin content. This is particularly relevant for individuals with iron deficiency or anemia.
3. Additives and Preparation Methods
The healthiness of tea and coffee can also be influenced by how they are prepared. Adding excessive sugar, cream, or syrups can negate their health benefits. For instance, specialty coffee drinks and sweetened tea can contribute to weight gain and metabolic issues. Ultimately, both tea and coffee can be part of a healthy diet when consumed in moderation and prepared without excessive additives. Choosing between them may come down to personal preference and specific health goals. As with many aspects of nutrition, balance and moderation are key to reaping the benefit while minimizing potential risks.
