EAM Jaishankar launches first overseas Jan Aushadhi Kendra in Mauritius

Friday, 19 July 2024

External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar has launched the first overseas Jan Aushadhi Kendra in Mauritius. The launch, which took place on Wednesday, testifies to “the close cooperation between our countries, especially in the important sector of health,” the foreign affairs ministry said.

The EAM, who was on a two-day visit to Mauritius, held extensive discussions with PM Pravind Jugnauth on various aspects of bilateral ties, including the development partnership, defense and maritime cooperation, economic and trade ties, and people-to-people linkages.

“Delighted to inaugurate along with Prime Minister Pravind Kumar Jugnauth the first overseas Jan Aushadhi Kendra in Mauritius,” EAM Jaishankar said in a post on social media platform X.

“This Aushadhi Kendra is the delivery of the promise made by PM Narendra Modi earlier this year,” he added.

On the India-Mauritius health partnership project, the foreign minister said that it “will supply costeffective, Made-in-India medicines to augment public healthcare and enhance well-being”.

In addition, Jugnauth and the EAM virtually inaugurated 12 India-assisted community development projects, as well as a Mediclinic in Grand Bois.

During the visit, Jaishankar also presented Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cards to the first two 7thgeneration Mauritian citizens and handed over a royalty cheque for the sale of nautical charts, as per the bilateral MoU on sales of navigational charts.

“The visit of EAM underscores the importance India attaches to Mauritius as an important pillar of India’s Vision SAGAR, and ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy,” the ministry said.

It also reaffirms “the continued commitment of both countries to strengthening their multi-dimensional bilateral relationship and deepening their close people-to-people ties,” it added.

Joe Biden ‘more receptive’ to exit talks, says report

As US President Joe Biden self-isolates himself at his home in Delaware with a Covid-19 infection, he will remain under unrelenting pressure to step aside and let the Democratic party find a different nominee for the 2024 Presidential elections. The New York Times has reported that the President has become “more receptive” to hearing plans for his exit although he may still be nowhere near the door. Not yet. But Democrats are pushing him towards it inch by inch. Top Congressional Democrats Hakeem Jeffries and Chuck Schumer met the President last week and convened their caucuses’ concerns about his chances of winning and the impact of his candidacy on the fate of those running for the House of Representatives and the Senate. The control of the two chambers is also up for grabs -- Republicans control the House, while the Democrats have the Senate at this point.

Had God on my side, says Donald Trump in first speech since assassination attempt

Former US President and the Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump recounted his experience of the assassination attempt on his life during a rally in Pennsylvania and said that God was on his side. While delivering his speech at the closing night of the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee where he accepted his third GOP nomination as president, Trump called for unity among Americans. It was his first public address since the attack at a rally in Pennsylvania. He described the moment when the bullet nearly hit him.

“I am not supposed to be here tonight. I am not supposed to be here,” he told the crowd who chanted “Yes, you are”. Trump said the bullet missed him as he leaned forward seconds before the assassin fired the shot.

“I began speaking very proudly about the great job my administration did on immigration at the southern border. Behind

me, to the right, a large screen displayed the number of border crossings. To see the chart I started to turn to my right. I began to turn a little bit further which I am very lucky I did not do,” he said.

The former US president said he heard “a loud whizzing sound and felt something hit me very, very hard on my right ear. I said to myself...’Wow, what was that...It can only be a bullet’...and moved my right hand to my ear, brought it down, and my hand was covered with blood.”

In his speech, Trump promised the “four greatest years in the history of our country” and said, “I’m running to be president for all of America.” Trump survived an attempt on his life on July 13 when a shooter, identified as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, fired multiple shots at him at a campaign rally, injuring his right ear

The shooter was shot dead by Secret Service snipers. The motive behind his attack is not known yet as investigations continue.

US urges India to use ties with Russia to end war in Ukraine

The United States on Monday urged India to use its longstanding relationship with Russia to urge President Vladimir Putin to “end his illegal war and to find a lasting peace” in its conflict with Ukraine. Mathew Miller, the State Department spokesperson, was asked about Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Moscow and his meeting with President Putin, which continues to generate interest in Washington.

“India has a longstanding relationship with Russia,” Miller said, adding, “We have, speaking for the United States, encouraged India to utilize that relationship with Russia, that long-standing relationship in the unique position that they have to urge President Putin to end his illegal war and to find a just peace, a lasting peace to this conflict.”

He added that India should “tell Vladimir Putin to respect the UN charter, to respect Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty. And that’s what we continue to impress upon the government of India which is an important partner of ours when it comes to its relationship with Russia.”

China says US responsible for breakdown in arms control consultations

The US side bears full responsibility for the suspension of a new round of arms control and non-proliferation consultations with China, a Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson said Wednesday.

Lin Jian made the remarks at a regular press briefing when asked to comment on certain US officials’ accusation against China of refusing to engage in the consultations. Li said that for some time, ignoring China’s firm opposition and repeated representations, the US side has continued to sell arms to Taiwan, and taken actions that seriously undermine China’s core interests and damage mutual trust between the two sides, thereby undermining the political atmosphere necessary for continued arms control consultations, reports Xinhua news agency.

“For this reason, China has decided to suspend talks with the United States on a new round of arms control and non-proliferation consultations, and the responsibility for this situation lies entirely with the US side,” Lin said.

China is willing to maintain communication with the United States on international arms control issues on the basis of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation, but the US side must respect China’s core interests and create necessary conditions for dialogue and exchanges between the two sides, the spokesperson noted.

Joe Biden ‘more receptive’ to exit talks, says report

Biden’s efforts to stay in the race were jolted on Wednesday by Adam Schiff, a top Democrat who came out to publicly call upon the President to quit the race.

His defection is especially notable as he is considered very close to former House Speaker and Democratic powerhouse Nancy Pelosi, who recently threw open the question of Biden’s candidacy even as the latter tried to move ahead.

Pelosi has also told the President in a private conversation that polls show he cannot defeat Donald Trump and that he could even wreck the chances of the Democratic party to retake the House and retain control of the Senate.

In a further blow to the President, an effort to lock up the nomination before the start of the convention in Chicago, Illinois, by kicking off the polling virtually has been delayed, if not put off. The intention was to wrap up the nomination so that the campaign could get past the uncertainty dogging it.

Should he quit, Kamala Harris, the Indian American Vice-President, is likely to have the

ticket and campaign funds, which have been raised in the name of the Biden-Harris ticket.

Others in the fray could be California Governor Gavin Newsom, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, Maryland Governor We Moore, and Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear.

A new AP-NORC poll shows two-thirds of Democrats -- 65 per cent -- want Biden to leave the race and let the party find a different candidate. Confidence in his mental capability is also down slightly from a poll in February.

The news wasn’t too good for Harris from this poll either. Her favorability rating is similar to Biden, although her respondents had a less unfavorable opinion of her.

Although Harris has the strongest claim on the ticket should Biden withdraw, it’s still not clear how the party will pick its nominee to take on the Republican nominee, former President Donald Trump, who will accept the nomination later on Thursday, the final day of the four-day Republican convention underway in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Four in five voters concerned over US spiraling out of control after Trump’s shooting, poll suggests

Four in five Americans are concerned about increasing political violence following an assassination attempt on former US President Donald Trump, and fear that the United States “is spiraling out of control,” a Reuters/Ipsos poll. Trump survived an assassination attempt at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday. The shooting became an alarming headline of news and social media forms, and sent political shocks across the country, with only over three months away from the presidential election, Xinhua news agency reported. Some 84 per cent of voters in the poll said they were concerned that extremists will commit acts of violence after the November election, an increase from the 74 per cent of the previous result in May.

Around 80 percent of US voters, including Democrats and Republicans, agreed that “the country is spiraling out of the control.” Only 5 per cent of respondents said it was acceptable for someone in their political party to commit violence to achieve a political goal, down from 12 per cent in a Reuters/Ipsos poll from June 2023. According to the poll, Republican presidential candidate Trump leads a margin over Democratic President Joe Biden, with 43 per cent to 41 per cent. It suggested that the attempt on Trump’s life had not sparked a major shift in voter sentiment, Reuters said after the poll. The poll, which was conducted online, surveyed 1,202 US adults nationwide, including 992 registered voters.

Iran rejects reports on alleged plot to assassinate Trump

Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokesman Nasser Kanaani on Wednesday dismissed US media reports of Tehran’s plot of an assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump.

In a statement released by the Iranian Foreign Ministry early Wednesday, Kanaani made the remarks in response to CNN’s claim on Tuesday that US authorities “obtained intelligence from a human source in recent weeks on a plot by Iran to try to assassinate Trump, a development that led to the Secret Service beefing up security around the former president.”

Kanaani stressed that Iran was determined in Trump’s prosecution owing to his direct role in the “crime” of assassinating top Iranian commander Qassem Soleimani in Iraq in January 2020, Xinhua news agency reported.

However, Tehran strongly rejected any involvement in the recent armed attack against Trump or claims that the country intended

to take such an action, said Kannani, noting, “Such claims are made based on biased political objectives and motivations.”

Trump survived, albeit with an ear injury, an assassination attempt by 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on Saturday, which left one spectator dead and two critically injured.

CNN, in its report, quoted a US national security official as saying that the Secret Service and Trump campaign had been made aware of Iran’s “threat” before Saturday’s rally. The report, however, said there was no indication that Crooks was connected to the plot.

Iran’s UN mission rejected CNN’s claim as “baseless and biased” in a statement issued in New York, according to the official news agency IRNA.

It added that from Iran’s perspective, Trump “should be punished at a court for ordering Soleimani’s assassination,” stressing that, however, Tehran had chosen a legal path to hold Trump to account.

Senator Bob Menendez found guilty in corruption trial

Democratic Party Senator Bob Menendez, who headed the powerful US Senate Foreign Relations Committee, has been convicted of acting as a “foreign agent” for Egypt, and of a slew of corruption charges.

After a trial that featured 13 gold bars and stacks of $480,000 in currency notes found in the New Jersey senator’s home and a Mercedes Benz gifted to his wife, a jury gave the verdict on Tuesday at a federal court in New York.

Prosecutors said that Menendez had met with Egyptian intelligence officials and had tried to speed up millions of dollars of military aid to that country. The conviction capped the 70-year-old senator’s political career of 50 years, which saw the son of Cuban immigrants rise to leadership positions in the Senate where he has served for 18 years.

Chuck Schumer, the leader of the majority Democratic Party in the Senate demanded his immediate resignation, before his term ends on the last day of December. Menendez is planning to run for re-election as an independent.

Protesting his innocence while leaving the courthouse, he said, “I’ve never been anything but a patriot of my country and for my country.”

Menendez was convicted on 16 charges that included wire fraud (using

telecommunications for fraudulent activities), bribery and extortion. Two businessmen were also convicted of bribing him. His second wife, Nadine Menendez, was charged in connection with the case but her trial has been delayed because she is undergoing treatment for cancer.

Iraqi PM, US official discuss ending coalition mission against IS in Iraq

Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani met with visiting US Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense Daniel Shapiro to discuss ending the US-led coalition mission fighting the Islamic State (IS) group in Iraq. The Prime Minister’s media office said on Monday that the talks focused on procedures for ending the international coalition mission and strengthening bilateral relations between Iraq and the US, Xinhua news agency reported.

The meeting also touched on regional issues, with al-Sudani raising concerns about the “suffering of the Palestinian people” and the difficulties of delivering humanitarian aid. He reportedly criticized the international community for not pressuring Israel to halt its actions.

Shapiro, according to the statement, emphasized the importance of Iraq’s role in regional stability and highlighted the need for continued communication and cooperation in areas like military equipment, security, and enhancing Iraqi forces’ capabilities. The meeting follows an agreement in January between Iraq and the US to establish a joint Higher Military Commission tasked with overseeing the coalition’s withdrawal.

Political Turmoil and Project 2025: The Impact of Trump’s Assassination Attempt and JD Vance as VP Pick on America’s Future

Dr. (H) Avi Verma

In the aftermath of an attempted assassination on former President Donald Trump and the announcement of JD Vance as his vice-presidential pick, the political climate in the United States has become even more volatile. These events intersect with the controversial Project 2025, a blueprint poised to drastically alter the federal government, highlighting the deepening ideological divide in the nation.

What is Project 2025?

Project 2025 is an initiative led by conservative think tanks and advocacy groups aimed at preparing a conservative administration to implement significant policy changes and structural reforms. The plan includes reducing the size of the federal bureaucracy, curtailing regulatory powers, and reinforcing conservative social and economic policies. Its architects aim to streamline governmental operations, limit federal oversight, and return more authority to state and local governments.

Key Components of the Plan Government Reorganization: The project proposes a massive overhaul of

federal agencies, focusing on downsizing and consolidating departments such as the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Department of Education.

Regulatory Rollbacks: It advocates for sweeping rollbacks of regulations, particularly those from Democratic administrations, affecting environmental protections, labor laws, and healthcare regulations.

Judicial Appointments: Project 2025 emphasizes appointing conservative judges to federal courts to ensure long-term alignment with conservative principles.

Education and Social Policies: The initiative targets educational reforms, such as school choice and parental rights, and aims to implement conservative values on issues like abortion, gender identity, and religious freedom.

Implications and Controversy

The combination of these developments is expected to have profound and controversial impacts:

Political Temperatures: The assassination attempt on Trump has already heightened tensions. JD Vance as VP may mobilize both conservative and liberal bases, further polarizing the electorate. Project 2025, with its sweeping changes, is likely to amplify these divisions.

Environmental and Labor Concerns: Critics argue that weakening the EPA and deregulating labor laws could have detrimental effects on environmental conservation and workers’ rights, increasing workplace hazards and widening economic inequality.

Social Policies: The emphasis on

conservative social policies could reignite debates over reproductive rights and LGBTQ+ protections, potentially leading to the erosion of civil rights.

The Political Landscape

Project 2025 and the recent political events reflect the broader ideological divide in American politics. Proponents view these initiatives as necessary corrections to liberal overreach, while critics warn of the potential dismantling of critical regulatory frameworks and social protections.

As political leaders and citizens grapple with the implications, the debate is likely to further intensify partisan divisions, serving as a litmus test for the future direction of the conservative movement and the broader American political landscape.

Moving Forward

As the 2024 election approaches, the effects of the attempted assassination, JD Vance’s VP candidacy, and Project 2025 will undoubtedly remain focal points of political discourse. These developments will shape the nation’s future, underscoring the importance of informed and engaged citizenry in American democracy.

Voters, policymakers, and advocacy groups must carefully consider the merits and drawbacks of these ambitious plans. The outcome of these debates will have lasting consequences for the nation’s future, either helping to reduce political temperatures or exacerbating the existing divide.

Justin Trudeau’s praise for Diljit as ‘guy from Punjab’ earns rebuke from BJP

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday expressed stern disapproval to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s ‘projection’ of actor-singer Diljit Dosanjh as a ‘singer from Punjab’ and termed it a ‘deliberate mischief through wordplay’.

The rebuke came after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau shared a video of him making a brief stopover at one of the concert venues and greeting the noted artiste rehearsing for his upcoming performance at Toronto’s famed Rogers Centre stadium.

Sharing a picture on his X handle, the Canadian PM wrote, “Stopped by Rogers Centre to wish Diljit Dosanjh good luck before his show.”

“Canada is a great country – one guy from Punjab can make history and sell out stadiums. Diversity isn’t just our strength. It’s a super-power,” he added.

BJP spokesperson Manjinder Singh Sirsa took exception to Trudeau’s words of praise for ‘Punjabi singer’ and sought to correct him by noting that it was a ‘guy from India’ who is creating history by holding sold-out stadium shows in Canada.

“Let me correct this, Mr Prime Minister. Your gesture of lauding a fantastic artiste like Diljit Dosanjh has been totally overshadowed by your deliberate mischief

South Korea, Canada agree to enhance regional security, economic cooperation

South Korea and Canada’s foreign ministers, Cho Tae-yul and Melanie Joly, convened to deepen their countries’ relationship across multiple fronts. They agreed on an “action plan” to bolster cooperation in regional security, economic partnerships, technology advancements, supply chain resilience, healthcare initiatives, and climate change strategies. To solidify these efforts, both nations plan to host talks among senior foreign and defense officials and prepare for a high-level “two plus two” economic security dialogue later this month.

The discussions also addressed shared concerns over North Korea’s expanding military and economic collaboration with Russia, particularly in light of their recent comprehensive strategic partnership agreement. Minister Joly reaffirmed Canada’s steadfast support for denuclearization efforts on the Korean Peninsula.

through wordplay,” Sirsa posted on X.

Notably, Diljit, who has been receiving lots of praise for his latest film ‘Jatt and Juliet 3’, held a sold-out show at BC Place Stadium in Vancouver recently.

Diljit kicked off his four-nation ‘DilLuminati’ concert with the Canada tour. The actor with exceptional singing skills will also be seen performing in India soon

along with his troupe. The condemnation by the BJP leader assumes significance as Canada had ‘preached’ India over freedom of expression during the farmers’ protest but was itself seen dealing with its domestic protests with an iron hand.

Also, Trudeau’s attempt to emphasize on Punjab a year ahead of polls is seen as an attempt to woo the vast Sikh community residing in Canada.

Mexican President urges stepping up gun control in US in wake of Trump shooting

IndoUS Tribune Newsdesk

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador urged the US government to better regulate weapons sales following the campaign rally shooting of former US President and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump.

At his daily press conference, the Mexican president also called on Trump and the current US president, Joe Biden, to sign “a commitment to regulate the sale of guns” if they win a second term, Xinhua news agency reported.

“I think it would help a lot to control the sale of weapons in the United States, it is something that urgently needs to be done,” Lopez Obrador told reporters at the National Palace in Mexico City.

The United States is undergoing a “social crisis” that must be resolved from the roots, he added. According to Lopez Obrador, since he took office in December 2018, Mexican authorities have seized 50,000 weapons, about 75 per cent of which were smuggled into Mexico from the United States, particularly the state of Texas.

Mexico’s government has repeatedly called on the United States to adopt tougher gun laws to reduce the supply of weapons and stem arms trafficking into Mexican territory.

Vivek Ramaswamy eyes Trump V-P pick Vance’s Senate seat

Vivek Ramaswamy, the Indiadescent biotech entrepreneur, has thrown his hat into the ring for the US Senate seat that will fall vacant if former President Donald Trump wins the presidential polls, taking away its current occupant J.D. Vance, the Republican nominee for Vice-President.

“To be frank, I would strongly consider it if I were asked to serve,” Ramaswamy told NBC News.

“I have not discussed this with Governor DeWine, but, you know, I look forward to evaluating what the future holds in store. I would strongly consider it if asked,” he added.

Under US rules, Ohio Governor Mike DeWin will nominate someone to complete Vance’s six-year term that started in January 2023, after which that person will have to run for the seat or leave it for others to fight for it.

DeWine is a Republican like Vance and Ramaswamy is from Ohio state which Vance represents in the US Senate.

DeWine has said, “it’s much too early” to name a replacement.

If DeWine picks him, Ramaswamy will become the only Indian-descent member of

the current Senate and only the second of Indian-descent. The first Indian American in the US Senate was Vice-President Kamala Harris. But when she was elected as V-P along with President Joe Biden, her Senate seat fell vacant and because she represented California in the Senate, it fell to the state’s Governor Gavin Newsom to name her replacement. Newsom picked Alex Padilla.

This practice landed a Governor of Illinois, Rod Blagojevich, in jail when he tried to auction the seat vacated by Senator Barack Obama on his election to the White House in 2008.

Ramaswamy may even land a position in a second Trump administration if the former

President wins. He has impressed Trump with his complete embrace of the latter’s MAGA agenda and for forcefully defending him from attacks by critics such as former Governors Chris Christie and Nikki Haley during the Republican primaries; Trump had ignored the primaries while staying miles ahead in polls.

Ramaswamy had quit the race endorsing Trump and had been a part of the starting line of contenders who auditioned for the V-P slot on Trump ticket, but did not make it.

But Trump went on to indicate, according to reports, that if elected, he might name Ramaswamy to head the powerful Department of Homeland Security, which runs, among other things, the country’s immigration services.

So, even as he eyes Vance’s vacated Senate seat, Ramaswamy is keeping his options open.

“I would also want to have a serious conversation with President Trump about the other ways I could have an impact on the country,” he said, adding, “My top passion is taking on the regulatory state.”

He added, “There are ways to address that from the executive branch. Some things need to be done by Congress and the Senate too. So, I look forward to those conversations after President Trump is successfully reelected with J.D. Vance.”

US DOJ says it has made substantial progress toward final Boeing plea agreement

The Justice Department reported on Thursday that it has made significant strides toward finalizing an agreement with Boeing to plead guilty to defrauding the US government. However, additional time is required to iron out the remaining details. Earlier this month, Boeing agreed to plead guilty to conspiring to defraud the United States in connection with two fatal crashes involving its 737 Max aircraft.

This agreement helped Boeing avert potentially more severe repercussions. Initially scheduled to file the final terms of the agreement with a federal court in Texas on Friday, both parties acknowledged in a status report on Thursday that more time is necessary. They indicated that the earliest possible filing date for the plea agreement is now expected to be Wednesday, July 24, 2024.

According to the status report, the Justice Department is committed to expediting the process but will provide a further update if the filing cannot proceed as planned.

Under the agreement, Boeing will pay fines totaling up to $487 million and operate under the supervision of an independent monitor selected by the government for three years. However, families of crash victims, who sought significantly higher compensation, have expressed dissatisfaction with the terms.

US appeals court blocks all of Biden student debt relief plan

Afederal appeals court has halted President Biden’s student debt relief plan, known as the SAVE plan, which aimed to lower monthly payments for millions of borrowers. The 8th Circuit Court of Appeals granted a stay requested by Republicanled states, blocking implementation of the plan’s provisions not already stopped by lower courts. This decision coincided with Biden’s announcement of $1.2 billion in loan forgiveness for 35,000 public servants under a separate program.

Education Secretary Miguel Cardona expressed concern over the court’s decision, stating that borrowers in the SAVE plan would be put on interestfree forbearance while legal challenges continue. The Biden administration criticized what it described as politically motivated lawsuits hindering efforts to ease student loan burdens, promising to defend the plan that has benefited millions of borrowers.

US State Department ‘unequivocally’ condemns attempted assassination of Trump

The US State Department has “strongly and unequivocally” condemned the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump as he was holding a campaign rally in the state of Pennsylvania on Saturday.

“We know today that people around the world, governments around the world have questions about what happened on Saturday, just as Americans do. And our message to them is simple. As President Biden has made clear, there is no place for violence in our democracy, period,” State Department Spokesman Matthew Miller said on Monday.

“We condemn this attack and all political violence strongly and unequivocally, just as we condemn political violence in any country, and just as we condemn previous acts of violence in the United States, whether it be the attack on members of Congress practicing for a baseball game, the brutal assault on Paul Pelosi, or of course, the horrific events of January 6, 2021,” he added.

Miller also said that Secretary of State Antony Blinken convened his senior leadership team to ask them to remind their teams and US allies and partners that “America has faced trying times before, but that we have emerged from them stronger because of our core values that we

as a nation”.

President Joe Biden, who called the former president after the shooting, said there is no place in the US for this kind of violence. “It’s sick. It’s sick. It’s one of the reasons why we have to unite this country. We cannot allow this to be happening. We cannot be like this,” the President said.

Senators seek answers from AT&T in massive hacking of US customer call data

Two U.S. senators, Richard Blumenthal and Josh Hawley, have directed inquiries at AT&T following a significant hacking incident in April that compromised approximately 109 million customer accounts. The breach involved the illegal download of call logs and text data spanning six months from 2022, affecting nearly all of AT&T’s customers. In their letter to AT&T CEO John Stankey, the senators expressed deep concerns over the breach’s implications for customer privacy, highlighting the potential for cybercriminals and foreign entities to exploit sensitive personal information.

The senators underscored the severity of the breach, suggesting that the stolen data could facilitate criminal activities and endanger customer safety by revealing details of individuals’ communications, locations, and activities over an extended period. They pressed AT&T on whether the company plans to compensate affected consumers and emphasized the risk of the compromised data being sold or exploited further. Snowflake, the cloud platform provider where the data was stored, was also addressed in a separate letter regarding ongoing security concerns related to other recent breaches involving its clients.

The FBI is currently investigating the incident, which marks the latest

in a series of high-profile cyberattacks affecting large segments of the American population. Both AT&T and Snowflake are under scrutiny, with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) also involved in investigating the breach. This breach adds to a string of cybersecurity challenges faced by major corporations, underlining the vulnerability of personal data in an increasingly digital world.

The FBI has identified the shooter as Thomas Matthew Crooks (20), who was killed by snipers of the US Secret Service that protect the previous and incumbent US presidents and their immediate families.

Federal appeals court upholds Mississippi’s lifetime voting ban for felons

Mississippi’s stringent practice of permanently disenfranchising residents with felony convictions has been upheld by the full Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals. The ruling overturns a previous decision that deemed the practice unconstitutional, stating that lifetime disenfranchisement does not constitute “cruel and unusual punishment.”

Critics argue this disproportionately affects Black residents and perpetuates inequalities in the state’s criminal justice system. The decision, which blocks thousands from voting, underscores ongoing legal battles over voting rights in the U.S.

Trump picks Senator Vance as his VP nominee

Former US President and the putative Republican nominee for the White House, Donald Trump has named J.D. Vance, a first-time Senator from Ohio as his nominee for Vice President. At 39 years of age, Vance is 40 years younger than Trump and brings to the ticket experience in the US military. He is a former venture capitalist and author of “Hillbilly Elegy”, an autobiography about growing up in a working-class American that first brought him to national attention. He is new to politics and was elected to the US Senate in 2022, with, in no small measure, Trump’s endorsement.

“After lengthy deliberation and thought, and considering the tremendous talents of many others, I have decided that the person best suited to assume the position of Vice President of the United States is Senator J.D. Vance of the Great State of Ohio,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, a social media platform he owns.

“J.D. honorably served our Country in the Marine Corps, graduated from Ohio State University in two years, Summa Cum Laude,

US judge dismisses classified documents case against Trump Knife-wielding man shot dead by cops near Republican National Convention

Police officers from Ohio shot and killed 43-year-old Samuel Sharpe, who was wielding knives, near a Republican Party National Convention site in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Sharpe, holding a knife in each hand, allegedly charged at an unarmed individual, prompting the out-of-state officers to open fire. Two knives were recovered from the scene.

Milwaukee Police Chief Jeffrey Norman defended the officers’ actions, stating they intervened to protect a person’s life. The incident occurred amidst heightened security during the Republican National Convention, drawing criticism from local residents over the presence and response of out-of-state officers in their community.

Sharpe’s cousin, Linda Sharpe, expressed outrage, questioning the officers’ use of force in a public park near a local homeless encampment where Samuel resided. Residents lamented the absence of Milwaukee police officers who might have handled the situation differently, given their familiarity with the area’s homeless population.

An autopsy was scheduled following the shooting, with ongoing investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

J.D.’s book, ‘Hillbilly Elegy’, became a Major Bestseller and Movie, as it championed the hardworking men and women of our Country,” he added.

“J.D. has had a very successful business career in Technology and Finance, and now, during the Campaign, will be strongly

focused on the people he fought so brilliantly for, the American Workers and Farmers in Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio, Minnesota, and far beyond…,” the former President posted on Truth Social.

Don Trump Jr, who had emerged as Vance’s most avid advocate within Trump’s inner circle, told CNN that Vance was an “incredible” pick.

U.S. Navy exonerates 258 Black sailors 80 years after Port Chicago explosion

The U.S. Navy exonerated 258 Black sailors on Wednesday, who were unfairly courtmartialed and punished for refusing orders after an explosion that killed over 300 people in a California port 80 years ago. The explosion at the Port Chicago Naval Magazine on July 17, 1944, was nearly as powerful as an atomic bomb, devastating two ships and a train, and claiming mostly Black sailors’ lives who were loading munitions.

Following the explosion, white sailors were granted leave while Black sailors were compelled to resume handling ammunition without proper training or gear. When they refused, the Navy conducted its largest mutiny trial, resulting in 258 court-martials and 50 convictions for mutiny. The convictions sparked widespread controversy, highlighting issues of injustice and racial bias in the military.

“On the anniversary of the explosion, U.S. Navy Secretary Carlos Del Toro

AUS district judge in Florida has dismissed a case accusing former President Donald Trump of mishandling classified documents, saying the appointment of a special prosecutor leading the government’s case was unconstitutional. Experts expect the government to appeal the ruling.

Judge Aileen Cannon, who was appointed by Trump, argued that because Jack Smith, the special prosecutor, was not appointed by the President and neither was he confirmed by the Senate, his appointment violated the Constitution. The ruling came as a major boost for the former President who is in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, for the Republican party convention that will formally anoint him as its nominee for the White House.

“As we move forward in Uniting our Nation after the horrific events of Saturday, this dismissal of the Lawless Indictment in Florida should be just the first step, followed quickly by the dismissal of ALL the Witch Hunts,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, the social media platform he owns. He went on to list out the cases, including the New York case in which he was found guilty and is awaiting sentencing. The “horrific event” he mentioned was a reference to the assassination attempt on him during an election rally in Pennsylvania last Saturday. The Monday ruling marks a second legal triumph for Trump whose cases for full immunity for actions as President were upheld by the US Supreme Court. The Florida case charged the former President with wrongfully retaining classified documents at his Mara-Lago estate after leaving office.

US officer fired over insensitive comments following Indian student’s death

ASeattle police officer, whose insensitive remarks and laughter following the tragic death of 23-year-old Indian student Jaahnavi Kandula sparked widespread outrage, has been terminated from the force.

Kandula was fatally struck by a speeding police vehicle driven by Officer Kevin Dave while crossing a street on January 23 last year. Dave was rushing at speeds exceeding 119 kmph to respond to a drug overdose call when the incident occurred, flinging Kandula 100 feet upon impact.

Bodycam footage released by the Seattle Police Department captured Officer Daniel Auderer laughing and making callous remarks immediately after the crash, stating, “Uh, I think she went up on the hood, hit the windshield, and then when he hit the brakes, flew off the car…But she is dead.” Following these comments, Auderer audibly laughed for four seconds.

Auderer’s bodycam also recorded him saying, “Yeah, just write a cheque. Just, yeah (laughter). USD 11,000. She was 26, anyway. She had limited value.”

Indian Consulate to aid of students hit by Texas hurricane

The Indian Mission in Texas is currently aiding numerous students from India who have been severely impacted by extensive power outages following the destruction caused by Hurricane Beryl.

Almost a million residences and commercial establishments are still without vital services, creating significant uncertainty in the area in the aftermath of the hurricane. According to reports from US media, the Category 1 storm cut off electricity for nearly 2.7 million customers after hitting Texas last week. Consul General of India, DC Manjunath, has visited local educational institutions such as the University of Houston to evaluate the welfare of Indian students during this challenging period.

During an interview with the Office of Police Accountability, Auderer claimed he was mocking potential city attorneys who would handle a wrongful death lawsuit.

Interim Chief Sue Rahr of the Seattle Police Department addressed Auderer’s hurtful remarks in an internal email, emphasizing that the pain inflicted on Kandula’s family by his words “cannot be erased.” Rahr underscored the

department’s commitment to upholding high standards and maintaining public trust, stating that retaining Auderer would only further tarnish the department’s reputation.

Rahr acknowledged the challenging decision involved in balancing intent versus impact in such cases but concluded that Auderer’s termination was necessary to uphold the integrity of the Seattle Police Department.

Italian police rescue 33 Indian farm laborers from exploitative conditions

Italian police announced on Saturday the rescue of 33 Indian farm laborers from exploitative working conditions in northern Verona province, seizing nearly half a million euros ($545,300) from their alleged traffickers. The operation highlighted ongoing concerns over labor exploitation in Italy, underscored by a recent fatal accident involving an Indian fruit picker.

The victims, brought to Italy on seasonal work permits by fellow Indians promising better prospects, were subjected to grueling conditions. They worked seven days a week, 10-12 hours a day, earning only 4 euros per hour, which was deducted until they paid off their initial 17,000 euro debt. Some were further exploited

to pay an additional 13,000 euros for a promised permanent work permit that was never intended to materialize, according to police.

Describing the treatment as akin to “slavery,” authorities charged the alleged perpetrators with offenses related to human trafficking and labor exploitation. The rescued laborers will receive support including legal residency, job opportunities, and protection from further harm.

Italy, grappling with labor shortages filled by migrant workers, particularly in lower-wage sectors, also contends with systemic labor law violations. National statistics indicate significant illegal employment, particularly prevalent in agriculture, underscoring ongoing challenges in enforcing labor rights.

Advisory issued for Indians in Bangladesh amid unrest

The Indian High Commission in Dhaka has urgently advised Indian citizens and students in Bangladesh to avoid unnecessary travel and limit movement outside their homes due to escalating unrest. This follows recent violent clashes in Dhaka between students and police, sparked by the closure of all public and private universities by the Bangladeshi government. The protests primarily focus on reforming the quota system for civil service jobs, which reserves positions for specific groups, including descendants of 1971 war participants. Demonstrations intensified Thursday, with clashes reported near Brac University in Merul Badda, resulting in injuries and traffic disruptions due to police intervention.

Given the volatile conditions, the Indian High Commission in Dhaka and Assistant High Commissions in Chittagong, Sylhet, and Khulna have issued 24-hour emergency contact numbers for Indian nationals and students:

The Indian Consulate in Perth highlighted the event on Tuesday, praising the Sikh Association of Western Australia (SAWA) for presenting Sikh culture to the wider multicultural society of Western Australia.

According to SAWA’s Facebook page, the mural is described as a “unique and bold statement” showcasing the long history and sense of belonging of Sikhs in Western Australia. Kanwar Yatra: Eateries told to display names of owners, Opposition fumes at government ‘diktat’

Acontroversy has ignited following the Muzaffarnagar administration’s directive for eateries and shops along the Kanwar Yatra route to prominently display the names of their owners. This move, aimed at avoiding confusion among Kanwar Yatris, has drawn sharp criticism from opposition parties. The directive has been likened to apartheid by some, with accusations of discriminatory practices and segregation echoing through political discourse.

Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav condemned the directive, questioning its impact on communal harmony. He expressed concern over potential social unrest and implied a targeted agenda against specific communities. Similarly, AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi criticized the order, drawing parallels to historical injustices like apartheid in South Africa and the boycott of Jewish businesses in Nazi Germany.

Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera condemned what he termed as state-endorsed

bigotry, urging all sections of society and media to oppose such regressive measures. Meanwhile, the Muzaffarnagar police defended the directive as a voluntary measure aimed at ensuring the convenience and safety of Kanwar Yatris during the Shravan month festivities.

The Kanwar Yatra, set to commence on July 22, attracts pilgrims from Delhi, Haryana, and Rajasthan who journey to Haridwar and Rishikesh to collect water from the Ganga river for offerings at Lord Shiva temples.

The Delhi High Court has reserved its verdict on a plea filed by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal challenging his arrest by the CBI in connection with an alleged liquor policy scam. The bench, presided over by Justice Neena Bansal Krishna, also postponed its decision on Kejriwal’s plea seeking interim bail.

Earlier, the court had instructed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to submit its response by July 17 regarding Kejriwal’s petition questioning the legality of his arrest and subsequent custody. Kejriwal was formally arrested on June 26 after being produced before the Rouse Avenue Court and subsequently placed under three-day CBI custody for interrogation.

In the ongoing legal proceedings, Kejriwal’s application for regular bail in the CBI case is set to be heard on July 29. Meanwhile, the Delhi High Court has scheduled August 7 for hearing the Enforcement Directorate’s (ED) appeal

BJP criticizes INDIA Bloc over atrocities against women in West Bengal and Telangana

On Friday, the BJP strongly criticized the INDIA bloc, singling out Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi, for their conspicuous silence regarding the rising incidents of atrocities against women in West Bengal and Telangana. BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla delivered a scathing rebuke, particularly highlighting a disturbing recent incident in Howrah, West Bengal, where a family endured what he described as “kangaroo justice.”

In a video message, Poonawalla expressed deep concern over the incident, stating, “After the shocking incidents in Uttar Dinajpur and

Two terrorists killed, infiltration bid foiled in J&K’s Kupwara

Two terrorists were killed on Thursday when the security forces foiled an infiltration bid on the Line of Control (LoC) in the Keran sector of Jammu and Kashmir’s Kupwara district. Officials said their bodies were yet to be retrieved.

The encounter broke out when the security forces challenged a group of infiltrating terrorists on the LoC in the sector. Officials said that troops of 6 Rashtriya Rifles and J&K Police had received intelligence inputs about the movement of terrorists along the LoC.

In another encounter between the terrorists and the security forces in the Doda district earlier in the day, two soldiers were injured. The encounter was going on in the Kastigarh area of the district.

On July 14, three heavily armed terrorists were killed along the Line of Control (LoC) in Kupwara district when the Army foiled an infiltration bid by the terrorists. It must be recalled that five security personnel, including four soldiers and a local policeman, were killed by the terrorists in an ambush in the Bhata Dessa area of the same district on July 16.

Chopra, now another horrifying video has surfaced from Howrah. The brutal manner in which a family was attacked, including the barbaric cutting of a woman’s hair with scissors, reflects a dangerous trend. This kind of violence has unfortunately become commonplace in West Bengal under the TMC regime, which claims ‘Maa Mati Manush’, but in reality promotes a Taliban-like mentality and culture.”

He further underscored that incidents of violence against women in places like Sandeshkhali, Cooch Behar, and now Howrah are indicative of the unsafe environment women face in West Bengal, while opposition leaders remain silent.

Poonawalla also drew attention to

a similar incident in Congress-ruled Telangana, where a poor woman was allegedly beaten and tied to an electric pole. He criticized prominent Congress leaders for their apparent indifference, stating, “Where are Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Vadra, Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi, and Priyanka Chaturvedi? None of them have spoken out against these atrocities.”

According to Poonawalla, the silence of opposition leaders on these distressing incidents exposes their true priorities. He concluded by asserting that the BJP will continue to highlight and condemn such acts of violence against women, urging accountability from the ruling parties in both states.

Ukraine approves law on debt restructuring

Ukraine’s parliament has approved a significant law focused on restructuring the country’s debts, securing 231 votes in favor, which surpassed the minimum requirement of 226 votes. This legislative move empowers the Ukrainian government to suspend payments on its external state debts until October 1, 2024.

The decision comes amidst ongoing negotiations with foreign creditors, aiming to alleviate financial pressures and facilitate a sustainable path forward for Ukraine’s economic stability. Earlier discussions indicated that if an agreement on debt restructuring with foreign creditors isn’t reached by August 10, Ukraine may consider freezing its foreign debt payments.

This legislative action follows international creditor approval in August 2022 to postpone payments for 24 months on 13 Eurobond issues totaling $22.6 billion, reflecting efforts to manage Ukraine’s financial obligations amidst challenging economic conditions.

World Court declares Israel’s occupation of Palestine ‘unlawful’

The International Court of Justice, based in The Hague, delivered a significant advisory opinion declaring Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories seized in the 1967 Six Day War as “unlawful.” The court asserted that all nations have a duty not to recognize Israel’s control over these territories and should refrain from assisting in perpetuating the occupation. This opinion, sought by the UN General Assembly, is seen as bolstering the recognition of Palestine by 145 out of 193 UN member states, potentially encouraging others to follow suit.

The court’s opinion also called for Israel to cease building settlements in the occupied territories, remove settlers already there, and provide reparations for damages caused in Palestinian areas. While the advisory holds symbolic weight, it lacks enforceability since the ICJ lacks mechanisms to ensure compliance with its rulings. It urged the General Assembly and Security Council

Eto consider further steps to end Israel’s occupation, although any action in the Security Council could be blocked by a US veto.

Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu dismissed the court’s opinion, labeling it as false and a distortion of history. He emphasized Israel’s historical and biblical

connections to the land, asserting that Jews are not foreign occupiers but rightful inhabitants of Jerusalem and the territories of Judea and Samaria. Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad alMaliki, welcoming the ICJ’s stance, called for international solidarity in rejecting support for Israel’s continued occupation, urging against aid, trade, or any form of assistance that could perpetuate it.

Jordan condemns Israeli parliament’s proposal opposing establishment of Palestinian state

Jordan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has strongly criticized recent Israeli actions, including the approval by the Israeli Knesset of a proposal opposing the establishment of a Palestinian state. The ministry spokesperson emphasized that such decisions do not alter Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories or the applicability of international conventions protecting civilians in conflict. Jordan condemned Israel’s ongoing efforts to deny Palestinians their right to an independent state, labeling them as detrimental to regional security and peace.

Additionally, the ministry denounced a visit by Israel’s National Security Minister to the Al-Aqsa Mosque in East Jerusalem, viewing it as provocative and part of Israel’s broader disregard for international law in its actions in occupied territories. Jordan called upon the international community to condemn these actions and provide protection for Palestinians, particularly in light of ongoing Israeli military operations in Gaza.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said that the routine challenges of working in an active conflict include access constraints, fuel restrictions, an ongoing power blackout and the lack of public order and safety, Xinhua news agency reported.

“During the first 16 days of July, our colleagues coordinated 60 humanitarian missions into the north,” OCHA said.

“Only 24 were facilitated, while 12 were denied access by the Israeli authorities and 20 others were impeded by Israeli troops on the ground. The remaining four missions were canceled by humanitarian organizations due to logistical, operational or security reasons,” it added.

The humanitarians said the restrictions

prevent aid organizations from gaining regular access to the north, where hundreds of thousands of people need humanitarian assistance. It also makes it impossible for humanitarian workers to manage the flow of supplies into Gaza via the Erez West crossing.

OCHA said the UN relief agency for Palestinians, known as UNRWA, reports limited access to hygiene and clean water

Two coal mines in India now ranked among world’s 5 largest mines

Chhattisgarh-based Coal India subsidiary South Eastern Coalfields Limited’s Gevra and Kusmunda coal mines have secured the second and fourth spots, respectively, in the list of the world’s 10 largest coal mines released by WorldAtlas. com.

Located in Korba district of Chhattisgarh, these two mines produce more than 100 million tonnes of coal annually, accounting for about 10 per cent of India’s total coal production, the Ministry of Coal said on Thursday.

The Gevra opencast mine has an annual production capacity of 70 million tonnes and produced 59 million tonnes of coal in FY 23-24. The mine started operations in 1981 and it has enough coal reserves to meet the country’s energy requirements for the next 10 years.

The Kusmunda opencast mine produced more than 50 million tonnes of coal in FY 23-24, only the second mine in India after Gevra to achieve this feat.

These mines have deployed some of the world’s largest and most advanced mining

machines such as the ‘Surface Miner’ that extracts and cuts coal without blasting for eco-friendly mining operations, according to the Coal Ministry statement.

For overburden removal (the process of removing layers of soil, stone, etc. to expose the coal seam), the mines use some of the world’s largest HEMMs (Heavy Earth Moving Machinery) such as 240-tonne dumpers, 42 cubic meter Shovel along with Vertical Rippers for environment-friendly and blast-free OB removal.

South Eastern Coalfields Limited CMD Prem Sagar Mishra said it is indeed a proud moment for Chhattisgarh that two of the world’s five largest coal mines are now in the state.

Chicagoland witnesses a star-studded concert brimming with ‘musical magic’

Naperville’s Yellowbox Theater recently hosted a mesmerizing concert featuring a stunning blend of Western and Indian instruments performed by renowned maestros. The electrifying saxophone of George Brooks, the scintillating sitar of Krishna Mohan Bhatt, the ever-popular guitar of Fareed Haque, and the divine Indian bamboo bansuri flute of Chethan Anant created an unforgettable evening. They were expertly accompanied by the dynamic tabla duo, Raj Deshmukh and Arun Sabapathy.

This concert marked the miraculous comeback of Krishna Mohan Bhatt after a nearly fatal accident that led to a five-month hospital stay and multiple surgeries. His return to the stage was a testament to resilience and the transformative power of music.

The philosopher Plato once said, “Music gives flight to the soul and imagination to the mind,” and this concert embodied that sentiment. Music, as the universal language, transcends faith and brings humanity into perfect

harmony.

The second half of the concert featured the faculty and students of the “Sadhana School of Music,” and it was equally enthralling. Masterminded by the school’s artistic director, Nirmita Ashok Dholakia, the performance showcased a picturesque “Raagamalika” of Taranas in various Raagas. The segment began with a divine invocation to Lord Ganesha, followed by a classically based Bhajan in Raag Bhupali, dedicated to Lord Shiva. Led by their guru, Nirmitaji, and accompanied by the school’s most talented students, the performance transported the appreciative audience to a realm of divinity.

The concert continued with captivating film songs, including “Mere Dholana” in Raag Malgunji by Khushi Jain and “Kuhu Kuhu” featuring four Raagas— Sohini, Bahar, Jaunpuri, and Yaman— sung by Vidhi Patel. The students then performed in Raaga Chhayanat, Bahar, and Malkauns. The maestros joined this stunning performance, culminating in the most melodious Raaga Bhairavi.

This concert highlighted the importance of nurturing children’s innate

talents through proper training in the arts, allowing them to shine like the sun and delight like the moon. This is the best way to keep our traditions alive through the ages.

Additionally, the concert supported two very worthy causes:

“Smiles” - Limb Replacement CenterIndia: Providing prosthetic limbs to those in need, helping them regain mobility and

independence.

“Omkara” - Chinmaya Mission NWIndiana: Teaching children and adults about scriptures, traditions, and the philosophy of universal love, encapsulated in the phrase “Sarve Bhavantu Sukhinah” (May all be happy).

These causes underline the concert’s mission to blend artistic excellence with meaningful contributions to society.

MARKETS

The US stock market continues to rally & there is also some broadening. Several global markets are also rallying - INDIA, Australia, Singapore, Japan, EAFE index, EM index.

Barron’s Midyear ROUNDTABLE

features Todd AHLSTEN, Parnassus CIO & PRBLX; Scott BLACK, Delphi Management; Abby COHEN, Columbia U; Sonal DESAI, Franklin Templeton; Henry ELLENBOGEN, Durable Capital Partners; Mario GABELLI, Gabelli Funds; David GIROUX, T Rowe Price CIO & PRWCX (PRCFX, TCAF); Rajiv JAIN, GQG Partners; William PRIEST, Epoch; John ROGERS, Ariel Investments; Meryl WITMER, Eagle Capital Partners.

SOUTH AFRICAN stocks (ETF EZA) are attractive with reforms likely under the new coalition government (ANC + DA). Global investors may return if the government can control crime, corruption & keep the economy growing at +2%.

ARGENTIAN President MILEI (The “Chainsaw”) has followed unconventional political & economic policies under limited emergency powers. He has chopped off government departments, considered privatizations, ignored foreign creditors (bonds trade at 40c). But the budget has a small surplus. Argentinians are hoarding dollars for protection from

inflation (it fell to 4% from 25%) & local currency controls. An ETF is ARGT.

ECONOMY

STEEL TARIFFS will hurt the US steel industry (NUE, CLF, X, etc) & the US consumers as lot of imported steel is used in American products. China may avoid tariffs by routing its steel via Asia & Lat Am. Top global steel producers now are #1 China, #2 INDIA, #3 Japan, #4 US; if Nippon Steel buys X (deal in limbo), Japan will become #2, India #3.

DOLLAR, a reserve currency, is high & is expected to weaken. Lot of the US stock market outperformance vs the foreign markets has been due to dollar strength. While the Fed policy is in limbo, most other countries are cutting rates, except Japan. Several countries are reducing their exposure to the dollar by adding gold to their reserves & by trading more in regional & local currencies.

By revoking “Chevron”, the SUPREMES have put regulating AGENCIES (Fed, FTC, EPA, SEC, etc) on notice. The statutes of limitation for regulatory challenges have been set aside, deference to agencies won’t be the norm, & precedences won’t hold routinely. But new tech regulations (AI, data privacy, etc) won’t be easy. So, uncertainties may linger for quite a while hurting the business sentiments & planning.

RETIREMENT

Cooling inflation is good, but it may reduce the SOCIAL SECURITY COLA for 2025 – used is the Q3

average data for CPI-W (pending) & the current estimate is +2.7% (vs +3.2% in 2024).

FUNDS

MUNI BONDS are attractive for investors in higher tax brackets. Inflation is moderating & expectations for Fed rate cuts are rising. State & local governments finances are in good shape due to stimulus during the pandemic & stronger economy. TCJA is expiring in 2025, & if not extended, income taxes will rise. Higher-quality munis are MUB, VMLTX; lowerquality FAARX, CGMU.

In 2024/Q2, funds with exposure to Nvidia/NVDA &/or Eli Lilly/ LLY did well, especially the largecap growth (LCG) – HCMGX, FOCPX, VPMCX, VIGRX; ETFs QQQ, IWY, VUG. Other fund categories that did well include INDIA, precious metals, utilities. The top performing ACTIVE funds in categories were US large-caps GQEPX, US small-caps AVALX, HFCGX, NEAGX; balanced/hybrids DGIFX, FPURX; international GSINX, BISAX, MSMLX; bonds LCTRX, FAGIX.

ROTATION from large-caps to small-caps may be taking shape. The popular SMALL-CAP (SC) R2000 / IWM is more cyclical after its June 28 rebalancing. Better passive SC ETFs are IJR, SPSM, & an active SC-quality ETF is DFAS. Hot SC-growth (SCG) funds are CTASX, JSJAX, CWSAX, HRSRX, HISGX.

Understanding the causes of sudden cardiac arrest in young athletes

It’s a heartbreaking scene: a seemingly healthy young athlete collapsing on the field due to sudden cardiac arrest. Surprisingly, this tragic event happens more frequently than many might realize.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, approximately 2,000 individuals under the age of 25 die from sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) each year in the United States. SCA is the leading cause of death in young athletes, occurring when the heart stops beating due to an irregular heartbeat, known as an arrhythmia. Young athletes often appear healthy and show no symptoms. However, if symptoms do arise, they may include shortness of breath, a

racing heartbeat, chest pain, or dizziness. These signs are sometimes mistakenly attributed to intense physical activity and are not recognized as potentially life-threatening. Many young athletes are unaware of their risk for SCA, but it’s crucial to understand that screenings for underlying risks are available in most communities. While sudden cardiac death in young people is rare, understanding the causes and available screenings is vital.

Several conditions can lead to SCA, including:

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy: This condition involves the thickening of the heart’s lower chamber muscles, leading to an abnormal heart rhythm. It is often inherited and frequently undiagnosed, making it the most common cause of SCA in young people.

Long QT syndrome: This arrhythmia causes a rapid and chaotic heartbeat.

Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome: This condition involves an extra electrical pathway in the heart, leading to a potentially life-threatening arrhythmia that stops the heart from pumping blood.

Arrhythmogenic right ventricular dysplasia (ARVD): An inherited disorder where scar tissue replaces part of the heart muscle.

Depending on an individual’s family history and other risk factors, a physician might recommend screenings such as an electrocardiogram (EKG) or an echocardiogram.

While most screenings do not reveal any issues, they can identify heart conditions that may lead to sudden cardiac arrest in some cases. If a screening test indicates potential problems, doctors may suggest further tests, recommend avoiding competitive sports, or propose treatments to address the underlying condition.

Mastering personal style: Essential grooming techniques for men

In recent years, grooming has evolved from a basic routine to a nuanced practice that enhances personal presentation and boosts confidence. For men, grooming encompasses a range of techniques that go beyond mere hygiene to encompass skincare, hair care, grooming of facial hair, and overall self-care. These techniques not only contribute to physical well-being but also play a significant role in self-esteem and social perception.

Starting with skincare, a fundamental aspect of grooming involves cleansing and moisturizing the face daily. Men are increasingly recognizing the importance of skincare products tailored to their specific needs, such as those addressing oiliness, sensitivity, or signs of aging. Regular use of sunscreen is crucial to protect the skin from harmful UV rays, preventing premature aging and reducing the risk of skin cancer.

Hair care is another vital component of grooming. Whether sporting short or long hair, using appropriate shampoos and conditioners suited to hair type ensures cleanliness and promotes hair health. Styling products like gels, pomades, or waxes help achieve desired looks, whether it’s a sleek professional style or a casual tousled appearance. Regular trims by a skilled barber or stylist maintain the shape and health of the hair, preventing split ends and promoting thicker growth.

Facial hair grooming has seen a resurgence in popularity with the rise of various beard and mustache styles. Proper care involves washing and conditioning facial hair to keep it clean and manageable. Trimming and shaping the beard or mustache regularly with quality grooming tools maintain a neat appearance and prevent unruliness. Beard oils or balms can be applied to moisturize the hair and skin underneath, promoting healthy growth and a soft texture.

Maintaining oral hygiene is essential not only for fresh breath but also for overall health. Brushing teeth twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, flossing regularly, and using mouthwash help prevent cavities, gum disease, and maintain a bright smile. Routine dental check-ups ensure any potential issues are addressed promptly.

Body grooming encompasses practices such as showering daily with a suitable body

wash, using deodorant or antiperspirant to control body odor, and trimming or shaving body hair as desired. For those preferring a smoother appearance, techniques such as shaving or waxing can be employed, using appropriate products and techniques to minimize irritation.

Nail care often goes unnoticed but is equally important in grooming. Regularly trimming nails and keeping them clean prevents dirt buildup and reduces

the risk of infections. Applying hand cream or moisturizer keeps the hands soft and hydrated, enhancing overall appearance.

Beyond physical grooming, overall well-being includes maintaining a healthy diet, staying hydrated, exercising regularly, and getting enough sleep. These habits contribute to skin radiance, hair strength, and general vitality, complementing grooming efforts.

Caring for women’s health beyond 40: Key concerns and strategies

As women enter their 40s and beyond, they often face a variety of health concerns that require careful attention and proactive management. This stage of life, marked by perimenopause and menopause for many, brings about significant hormonal changes that can impact overall health and well-being. In addition to hormonal shifts, aging itself presents new challenges that necessitate a focus on preventive care and lifestyle adjustments. One of the primary health concerns for women in their 40s is the onset of menopause. This natural biological process typically occurs between the ages of 45 and 55 and involves a decline in estrogen production by the ovaries.

Menopause brings about symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats, mood changes, and changes in menstrual cycles. Managing these symptoms effectively can improve quality of life and often involves hormone replacement therapy (HRT) or other medications prescribed by healthcare providers. Beyond menopause, cardiovascular health becomes increasingly important. Post-menopausal women are at a higher risk for heart disease, making regular cardiovascular screenings and assessments crucial. Adopting heart-healthy habits such as regular exercise, a balanced diet low in saturated fats, and managing stress levels can significantly reduce this risk.

Osteoporosis is another significant concern for women over 40. Decreased estrogen levels can lead to bone density loss, increasing the risk of fractures. Preventive measures include adequate calcium and vitamin D intake, weight-bearing exercises, and, if necessary, medications to preserve bone density.

Breast health remains a priority throughout a woman’s life, but vigilance becomes even more critical after 40. Regular breast self-exams and mammograms are recommended to detect any changes early, which improves treatment outcomes in case of breast cancer. Maintaining a healthy weight and managing metabolic health is essential as women age. Changes in metabolism and hormonal balance can lead to weight gain, particularly around the abdomen, which increases the risk of diabetes and other metabolic disorders. A balanced diet, regular physical activity, and routine screenings for blood sugar levels are key preventive measures.

Mental health also deserves attention. Women in their 40s may experience increased stress due to various life changes, such as career shifts, caregiving responsibilities, or children leaving home. Practicing stress management techniques, seeking support when needed, and maintaining social connections can all contribute to emotional well-being. Lastly, regular health screenings and check-ups with healthcare providers are crucial for detecting and managing any emerging health issues effectively. These screenings may include cholesterol checks, thyroid function tests, pelvic exams, and others based on individual health histories and risk factors.

To conclude, addressing these health concerns proactively can empower women to lead healthier and more fulfilling lives beyond their 40s. By prioritizing preventive care, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and staying informed about their health needs, women can navigate this stage of life with resilience and vitality.
