Austria visit historic, added vigor to ties, says PM Modi after packed Vienna schedule

Friday, 12 July 2024

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday termed his Austria visit “historic” and “immensely productive” and said it has added “vigor” to the two countries’ friendship.

Wrapping up his visit to Austria - the first by an Indian Prime Minister in 41 years, PM Modi, in a post on X, said he was happy to have attended diverse programs in Vienna and thanked Chancellor Karl Nehammer, the Austrian government, and the people for their hospitality and affection.

PM Modi, who reached Vienna on Tuesday evening from Moscow, was accorded a ceremonial welcome at the Federal Chancery on Wednesday morning. He was warmly received by Chancellor Nehammer who had last week called the Indian Prime Minister’s visit to Vienna as a “special honor” as it came at a time when the two countries are marking 75 years of diplomatic relations.

Following their talks on Wednesday, PM Modi said that India and Austria have identified “new possibilities” to further strengthen mutual cooperation besides also deciding to give a strategic direction to their bilateral ties.

In a joint statement along with the Austrian Chancellor, he said that he also held detailed discussions on the current geopolitical situation in the world, including the conflict in Ukraine or the situation in West Asia. He mentioned that mutual trust and shared interests have strengthened India-Austria relations.

The Prime Minister also said that India and Austria will work together in areas such as infrastructure development, innovation, renewable energy, hydrogen, water and waste management, artificial intelligence (AI) and quantum technology and a blueprint for cooperation over the coming decades has been prepared.

He said that the startup bridge will be accelerated to connect the youth and ideas of both countries, and an agreement on mobility and migration partnership has already been reached, as well as on promoting exchanges between cultural and educational institutions will be promoted.

The PM also said that Austria had been invited to join the International Solar Alliance, Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure, and the Biofuel Alliance.

Addressing a group of leading Austrian and Indian CEOs from diverse sectors including infrastructure, automobile, energy, engineering and start-ups along with Chancellor Nehammer, Prime Minister Modi called on the Austrian business stakeholders to look at the fastunfolding opportunities in India, as the country moves to become the third-largest economy in the world over the next few years.

PM Modi receives Russia’s highest civilian award, dedicates it to people of India

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was on Tuesday conferred the Order of St. Andrew the Apostle the FirstCalled, Russia’s highest civilian award. Russian President Vladimir Putin presented PM Modi with the highest state order of the country during a brief ceremony held at the Grand Kremlin Palace following the bilateral talks between the two leaders. He stated that the Prime Minister of India was awarded the award for outstanding services in developing the special privileged strategic partnership between Russia and India and friendly ties between the Russian and Indian people.

“Dear Mr Prime Minister, dear friend, awarding you with the Order of St. Andrew the First-Called reflects the sincere gratitude of the Russian side for the significant contribution you make to strengthening friendship and mutual understanding between our states and people,” said Putin at the start of the ceremony.

India set to make strides in quantum technology, AI with the US: Union Minister

India, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is set to make great strides in quantum technology, artificial intelligence, critical metals and semiconductor sectors with the United States, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology, Dr Jitendra Singh, has told a visiting delegation of the US-India Business Council (USIBC). The delegation led by Edward Knight, Executive Vice Chairman called on the Union Minister and discussed collaboration in different areas, according to the Ministry of Science and Technology.

The minister recalled PM Modi’s recent visit to the US and highlighted the joint statement on the deployment of greenfield renewable energy, battery storage and emerging green technology projects in India. Dr Singh emphasized on the government’s vision in AI and Machine learning and expressed optimism over its integration with the AI task force developed by USIBC.

“Large Language Models (LLMs) are being worked upon by the Department of Science and Technology which are aligned with the task force,” the minister informed.

India is now a frontline nation in next-generation technologies. He also informed the delegation about the ‘Anusandhan NRF’ on the similar lines of the National Research Foundation in the US. Highlighting India’s progress in the last decade in science and technology, the minister recalled that the biotech industry has reached $140 billion with more than 4,000 companies.

NISAR -- a joint mission between NASA and ISRO -- is also evidence of India’s prowess in the space sector. He also referred to the new space policy and its benefits reaped in recent months. Knight appreciated India’s model of ‘JAM’ (Jan Dhan Yojana, Aadhaar and mobile) trinity and direct benefit transfer (DBT), and invited the Minister for the ‘49th India Ideas Summit 2024’.

Biden calls for NATO allies to step up defense production

S President Joe Biden on Wednesday said that the way forward for the NATO alliance is for each member country to strengthen their industrial base so that the group can stay ahead of Russia, which has “ramped up domestic production of defense goods with help from China, Iran, and North Korea”.

Thirty-two leaders of NATO countries, who include leaders of Finland and Sweden, the two new additions, are meeting here in Washington DC for the group’s 75th anniversary, with the Russian invasion of Ukraine bringing back memories of World War II that was started in Europe by a man’s desire to expand his country’s frontiers driven by historical grievances.

He urged Austrian majors to leverage the Indian economic landscape for highquality and cost-effective manufacturing under the Make in India program both for the domestic and international market, and as a global supply chain destination, and utilize the investment opportunities in India.

PM Modi also met Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen who noted that his country needs India as a partner in a structurally sustainable transformation towards climate neutrality. Thanking the Indian Prime Minister for visiting Austria, Van der Bellen stated that both countries can work in several areas, including the fight against climate change.

Prime Minister Modi also met Nobel physics laureate Anton Zeilinger and explored the possibilities around quantum technologies, along with a discussion over spirituality. After the meeting, the Austrian scientist said he experienced that PM Modi is a very spiritual person.

The PM also met distinguished Austrian Indologists Professor Birgit Kellner, Dr Martin Gaenszle, Dr Borayin Larios, and Dr Karin Preisendanz and discussed the rich tapestry of Indian history, philosophy, art, and culture, along with the origins of Indology in Austria. Concluding his visit with an address to the Indian diaspora in Vienna, he said that the world sees India with great hope and everyone across the globe wants to learn more about India. He also said that India and Austria, though geographically distant, have many similarities.

“Democracy connects both countries (India and Austria). Our shared values are liberty, equality, pluralism, and respect for the rule of law. Our societies are multicultural and multilingual. Both countries, celebrate diversity, and a big medium to reflect these values are elections,” the PM said to loud cheers.

“You have always actively advocated for expanding contacts with our country; even when you were the Chief Minister of the state of Gujarat, you put forward the initiative to establish sister-city relations with Russian regions, in this case, with the Astrakhan region,” he added.

The Russian President, in his speech, mentioned that having been the head of the Indian government for 10 years, PM Modi has truly contributed to the fact that Russian-Indian relations have acquired the character of a particularly privileged strategic partnership.

“With your direct support, the largest Russian-Indian projects in the trade, economic and military-technical spheres, nuclear and hydrocarbon energy, high technology and space are being successfully implemented. “It is difficult to overestimate your contribution to the formation of a stable basis for Russian-Indian cooperation in the international arena, where both our countries uphold the principles of multipolarity and strict observance of international law. They work together to ensure stability, global and regional security, and closely interact within the framework of BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation”.

The order has a badge, a star, an order chain and an order ribbon – silk, moiré, blue. Those awarded for distinction in combat are presented with the badge and star of the Order of St. Andrew the FirstCalled with swords.

“Honored to receive the Order of St. Andrew the Apostle. I dedicate it to the people of India,” said PM Modi after receiving the award.

The order was established by Tsar Peter I around 1699 and is the oldest of the Russian state awards. It was abolished in 1918 and restored in 1998 by the Decree of the President of Russia. The Order of St. Andrew the First-Called is awarded to prominent government and public figures, military leaders, outstanding representatives of science, culture, art and various sectors of the economy for exceptional services that contribute to the prosperity, greatness and glory of Russia, ensuring its national security and sovereignty. It is also given to heads and leaders of governments of foreign countries for their outstanding contribution to developing relations with Moscow.

PM Modi is the first Indian leader to be conferred with this award which was announced in 2019.

Biden calls for NATO allies to step up defense production

Speaking cogently and forcefully, perhaps to allay fears of allies who doubt his ability to govern for four more years if he wins, the US President said that the alliance has provided a security shield for member countries to grow and prosper. At a summit two years ago, allies decided to modernize their defense and deterrence. But the alliance is now facing fresh challenges.

“Right now, Russia is on a wartime footing with regard to defense production. They are significantly ramping up their production of weapons, munitions, and vehicles. And they’re doing it with the help of China, North Korea and Iran,” he said, adding, “We cannot in my view, we cannot allow the (NATO) alliance to fall behind.”

To that end, he noted, that every member has taken a pledge to put together plans to shore up defense production at home. “That means as an alliance (we) will become more innovative and competitive. We’re able to produce more critical defense equipment more quickly than we should so that we may need it,” Biden asserted.

Pelosi, Clooney, Democratic senators express concerns over Biden administration

In a surprising turn of events, prominent figures within the Democratic Party, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, actor George Clooney, and several Democratic senators, have voiced skepticism and raised concerns about the current trajectory of the Biden administration.

Speaker Pelosi, known for her staunch support of President Biden’s agenda, indicated growing reservations during a closed-door meeting with party members yesterday. Sources close to the Speaker reported that she emphasized the need for stronger leadership and clearer messaging from the White House on critical issues such as inflation, healthcare reform, and immigration policy.

Similarly, Hollywood actor and philanthropist George Clooney, a vocal advocate for Democratic causes, expressed disappointment in recent policy decisions during an interview with a major news

outlet. Clooney cited concerns over the administration’s handling of economic challenges and urged for more decisive action to address growing discontent

among American voters. In addition to these voices, several Democratic senators have privately

conveyed apprehensions about the Biden administration’s ability to navigate complex legislative battles in a closely divided Congress. Issues such as the Build Back Better agenda, voting rights legislation, and foreign policy initiatives have reportedly been sources of contention among party members.

The emergence of dissenting voices within Democratic ranks comes at a crucial juncture, with midterm elections looming and public approval ratings for President Biden experiencing fluctuations. While many Democrats remain committed to advancing the administration’s agenda, the recent expressions of doubt underscore broader concerns about the party’s electoral prospects and policy effectiveness moving forward.

As the political landscape continues to evolve, the statements from Pelosi, Clooney, and Democratic senators are likely to fuel further discussions within the party about strategy, messaging, and the path forward for the Biden presidency.

US NSA advises prudence in India’s relations with Russia

US National Security Adviser, Jake Sullivan on Thursday said a “bet on Russia as a longterm, reliable partner is not a good idea” for India or any other country and now that Russia has become a “junior partner” to China, Moscow will side with China in any conflict between the latter and India.

Sullivan, who was in India in June for a meeting with his counterpart Ajit Doval to discuss the Initiative on Critical and Emerging Technology, was responding to a question during an interview on MSNBC about Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Moscow earlier in the week - followed closely by the US government and news media as, among other things, it coincided with the ongoing NATO summit here that has been dominated by concerns about Russia and its growing ties with China, Iran, and North Korea.

“We’ve made clear to every country in the world including India that a bet on Russia as a long-term, reliable partner is not a good bet,” he said.

“And that’s especially true, in our view, for India because Russia is becoming closer to China. In fact, it’s becoming the

Nikki Haley releases delegates to Republican National Convention, advocates backing Trump

Nikki Haley, who dropped out of the Republican presidential race in early March, has said that she is releasing her delegates to the Republican National Convention (RNC), urging them to support former President Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee. Haley, a former South Carolina governor and former US ambassador to the United Nations, said on Tuesday in a statement that the upcoming nominating convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, is a time for Republican “unity,” as reported by Xinhua news agency. Haley, who had fiercely criticized the former president, explicitly said in a May speech that she would vote for Trump, despite the contentious issues that arose between them during the Republican presidential primaries.

Haley is not invited to the 2024 RNC, but she has made it clear she’s voting for him, spokeswoman Chaney Denton was quoted by CNN as saying. According to The Associated Press’ estimate, Haley earned 97 delegates during the primary process. Trump has garnered 2,265 delegates so far, far exceeding the 1,215 benchmark needed for the party’s nomination.

Haley’s call for “unity” within the Republican Party comes at a time when US President Joe Biden, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, is facing mounting pressure to withdraw from the race due to concerns about his physical and mental fitness. Trump leads Biden by 3.3 percentage points, according to the latest average polling data from Real Clear Politics.

junior partner to China. And in that way, they would side with China over India any day of the week. And … Prime Minister Modi, of course, has profound concerns about the potential for Chinese aggression against India. Which we have seen over recent years.”

Sullivan went on to essentially lay out what has been the Biden administration’s overall approach to India’s long-term relationship with Russia — that is part of a “long game”.

“We’ll keep making that case. But countries like India do have a historic relationship with Russia. So none of this is going to change dramatically overnight. This is playing the long game. It is making investments in democratic partners and

allies around the world including countries like India and we think that will pay off as we go forward.”

India’s long-term ties with Russia have been an issue that the US has sought to deal with a mix of privately expressed misgivings to public statements of understanding. State Department spokesperson Mathew Miller said on Tuesday the US has privately conveyed its concerns in private conversations, including one that took place within 24 hours of the Prime Minister’s meeting with President Vladimir Putin. But he did not share details of this conversation.

Occasionally, the US response hovers between frustration and anger. India’s purchase of Russian-made S-400 air defense systems, for instance, caused considerable consternation. Some US lawmakers called for sanctions under the Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act, which seeks to punish Russia by threatening countries that buy Russian goods of a sizable value with secondary sanctions.

US officials have said India’s Russian arms acquisitions are an impediment to interoperability between the militaries of India and the US and there is fear of US technology landing up in Russian hands.

“We are seeking to develop a much deeper and stronger technological relationship between the United States and India,” said US Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell, who had accompanied Sullivan on the June visit to India, when asked about arms transfers at a news briefing on his return.

“We have been clear which areas are affected by the continuing relationship between India and Russia militarily and technologically. I think we will take what steps we can to mitigate some of those engagements, and we have expressed some concerns, but at the same time we have confidence and trust in India and we’re seeking to advance our partnership in technology even in the context of those enduring ties.”

On the larger issue of India’s ties with Russia, he said, “I do want to underscore that the United States and India are both great powers. We have many areas of alignment, but it is not surprising that there would be areas where we’ve had perhaps different perspectives, views, historical ties. And I think in the context of our strategic partnership, I think what’s been important is our ability to share views on areas where we occasionally have disagreements, do those respectfully, and seek where possible to narrow those areas where there are differences.”

Pakistan seeks better relations with neighbors including India

Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has reiterated the ruling government’s willingness to mend ties with its neighbors, including India.

Highlighting it as one of the priorities of his government’s foreign policy, Dar mentioned about the consistent stance on improving ties with its neighbors during a briefing to the Senate Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs.

“Pakistan cannot change its neighbors. Therefore, it would be better to improve relations with the existing ones,” said the Foreign Minister. Talking about relations with Afghanistan, Dar said that while Pakistan wishes to have better bilateral relations, it cannot ignore the fact that the recent attack on Chinese citizens in Pakistan was planned from across the border.

While Dar refrained from mentioning India, he has been calling for improvement of relations with the neighboring country. His indirect hint towards willingness to deescalate and normalize relations with India during the latest briefing is not the first time such an intent has been shared publicly.

After becoming the Foreign Minister of Pakistan, Dar had called on India to reopen business and trade relations through confidence-building measures and table talks. Dar’s statements on better relations with India were reiterated on various occasions, highlighting the ruling government’s optimism towards paving the way to restart channels of engagement with India.

He again highlighted the importance of better relations with the neighbors, including India and Afghanistan, during the briefing of the new committee, citing it as a part of Pakistan’s prioritized aspects of foreign policy which will lay emphasis on high-level engagements with strategic, traditional and regional partners and neighbors.

Experts say that Dar’s stance on relations with India and Afghanistan indicates a softer position of the democratic coalition government of Shehbaz Sharif towards the neighboring countries. However, the government’s foreign policy stance may not get approval from the powerful military establishment.

“Pakistan’s relations with India are nowhere because of two reasons. First, India has clearly refused to revoke and reverse

the Article 370 decision on Kashmir. And, secondly, Narendra Modi, during his recent election campaign, had made it clear that he has shut down the chapter on relations with Pakistan. In this scenario, I do not see much happening in the near future,” said senior political analyst Javed Siddique.

He stated that Pakistan’s current political setup is duty-bound to take the country’s military establishment into confidence before taking any step forward. Siddique added that the military is on the offensive against TTP and is threatening to even take out terrorists in Afghanistan.

“On the other hand, it (military) has no intent to engage with India if the Kashmir dispute is not settled. Therefore, the current government’s wish to engage with India and Afghanistan may not get a positive signal from the military establishment,” said Siddique.

A call for civility in American politics

In the ever-evolving landscape of American politics, former President Donald Trump continues to set precedents that blur the lines of decorum and civility.

His latest barrage of verbal attacks against political leaders from both parties highlights a troubling shift towards a norm where personal insults replace policy debates and civil discourse.

Recently, Trump has not held back in his verbal onslaught against key figures in both the Democratic and Republican parties.

For instance, he referred to President Joe Biden as “Sleepy Joe,” a nickname meant to undermine Biden’s mental acuity and vitality. This label isn’t new, but its repeated use signals a strategy aimed at belittling the sitting president’s competence and energy.

On the Republican side, Trump has targeted his potential 2024 primary challengers with equal ferocity. He labeled Florida Governor Ron DeSantis as “Ron DeSanctimonious,” a jab meant to mock DeSantis’s perceived self-righteousness. Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie has also been on the receiving end, with Trump

calling him “sloppy” and a “fat pig,” attacking Christie’s physical appearance and political career simultaneously. Nikki Haley, too, was not spared, with Trump referring to her as “birdbrain,” a comment intended to demean her intellect and capabilities.

One of the more disturbing instances was Trump’s comment about Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, whom he dubbed “Crazy Bernie.” This kind of rhetoric not only belittles Sanders but also stigmatizes mental health issues, contributing to a culture of insensitivity and disrespect.

These insults are more than mere name-calling; they are strategic tools that divert attention from substantive policy discussions and create a media spectacle. Trump’s ability to dominate news cycles with his provocations keeps the focus on personalities rather than pressing issues. This tactic can rally his base, who often see his brashness as a sign of strength and authenticity, but it also deepens divisions and erodes the quality of public discourse.

The normalization of such behavior raises significant concerns about the future of political engagement in the United States. Political leaders traditionally viewed as role models now frequently engage in or are subjected to crass and personal attacks. This environment can discourage qualified individuals from entering public service, fearing that their reputations and families might suffer the brunt of public ridicule and personal smears.

Moreover, this shift towards a more antagonistic political climate can have long-term implications for governance and bipartisanship. When the focus is on tearing down opponents rather than building consensus, the possibility of collaborative policymaking diminishes.

The growing hostility can lead to legislative gridlock, where the emphasis

is on obstructing the other side rather than advancing the nation’s interests.

In the broader societal context, the proliferation of such rhetoric can trickle down, influencing public behavior and attitudes. When the nation’s leaders engage in and normalize verbal assaults, it sends a message that such conduct is acceptable, even commendable. This can exacerbate polarization and incivility among the populace, making it harder to find common ground on critical issues.

For the Non-Resident Indian (NRI) community in the United States, this shift in political climate can have specific ramifications. NRIs often look to the American political system as a model of democracy and governance.

The degradation of political discourse can tarnish this image and affect how the NRI community perceives and engages with the political process.

Additionally, the heightened political polarization and hostility can lead to a less welcoming environment for immigrants, affecting their sense of belonging and safety.

To move forward, it is essential for leaders across the political spectrum to recommit to a higher standard of discourse. Voters also play a crucial role by demanding more from their representatives, prioritizing integrity and constructive dialogue over sensationalism and hostility.

The future of American democracy depends on a collective effort to restore decency and respect in political interactions. Only then can the nation hope to address its challenges effectively and unitedly.

Trump vows to stop outsourcing, if elected President

Former American President Donald Trump has promised to end outsourcing if re-elected, which should sound alarm bells across India’s multi-billion-dollar outsourcing industry whose largest customer is the US,

“Stop outsourcing, and turn the United States into a manufacturing superpower,” said Trump’s 2024 Republican Party Platform released ahead of the party convention next week to anoint him as the party nominee for the White House, in his third run.

The platform is a list of 20 promises that articulate Trump’s “vision to Make America Great Again in a way that is concise and digestible for every voter”, said Trump Campaign Senior Advisors Chris LaCivita and Susie Wiles.

“While Joe Biden and Democrats argue about who will be at the top of their ticket and have implemented policies that have raised prices on everyday families, opened the floodgates to migrant crime via wideopen borders, shackled American energy with red tape forced by Washington bureaucrats, and sewn chaos across the world through weak foreign policy, President Trump will Make America Great Again through these America First principles.”

The platform was a mix of the party’s conservative agenda and populist measures. They included promises to “seal the border”, conduct the largest ever deportation programme, “prevent World War Three”, tax cuts for workers, end inflation, build the strongest military in the world, bring peace to Europe and

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant meets with US envoy Brett McGurk to discuss Gaza hostage release deal

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant held a crucial meeting with visiting US envoy Brett McGurk to deliberate on ongoing efforts toward securing the release of hostages held in Gaza. The meeting, which took place on Thursday, underscored the shared commitment of Israel and the United States in addressing this pressing humanitarian issue.

Minister Gallant and Envoy McGurk reviewed progress made thus far in negotiations aimed at facilitating the safe return of Israeli citizens currently detained in Gaza. The discussion also encompassed broader regional security concerns and strategies to advance peace and stability in the area.

The exchange between Gallant and McGurk reflects a coordinated diplomatic effort to resolve complex challenges affecting both nations. As discussions continue, both Israeli and US officials remain dedicated to achieving a positive outcome that prioritizes the well-being and safe return of those affected.

The Indian government and businesses will be alarmed by the promise to end outsourcing, which will bring back memories of a slew of measures announced in Trump’s first term to curb outsourcing and targeting of Indian companies that dominated the outsourcing industry in the US.

The administration had targeted the H-1B visa programme that American companies use to make up for the shortage of manpower available locally for high-speciality jobs.

The US accounts for an estimated 62 per cent of the business that the Indian

outsourcing industry gets worldwide. US companies that have outsourced to Indian companies include giants like Ford Motors, Cisco, American Express (Amex), General Electrics and Microsoft.

It’s not unusual for the US President to rail against outsourcing and offshoring as vast swatches of the country were wiped clean of manufacturing jobs that were shipped abroad to low-wage countries in a globalized economy.

President Joe Biden called for an Offshoring Tax Penalty in his platform for the 2020 election and former President Barack Obama called frequently and urgently for US companies to bring back outsourced jobs threatening them with tax disincentives.

Iraqi PM, US official discuss ending coalition mission against IS in Iraq

Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani met with visiting US Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense Daniel Shapiro to discuss ending the US-led coalition mission fighting the Islamic State (IS) group in Iraq. The Prime Minister’s media office said on Monday that the talks focused on procedures for ending the international coalition mission and strengthening bilateral relations between Iraq and the US, Xinhua news agency reported. The meeting also touched on regional issues, with al-Sudani raising concerns about the “suffering of the Palestinian people” and the difficulties of delivering humanitarian aid. He reportedly criticized the international community for not pressuring Israel to halt its actions.

Shapiro, according to the statement, emphasized the importance of Iraq’s role in regional stability and highlighted the need for continued communication and cooperation in areas like military equipment, security, and enhancing Iraqi forces’ capabilities. The meeting follows an agreement in January between Iraq and the US to establish a joint Higher Military Commission tasked with overseeing the coalition’s withdrawal. The Iraqi authorities report that the commission has convened on multiple occasions to develop a plan for troop redeployment.

Record-breaking heat wave grips western US, triggering wildfires, evacuations

Apersistent heat wave is shattering temperature records across the Western United States, putting millions of people under extreme heat warnings and fueling dangerous wildfires that forced evacuations in several states.

Nearly 75 million people, primarily in the West, are under some form of extreme heat advisory on Sunday as a powerful heat dome hovers over the region, according to the National Weather Service, which has issued excessive heat warnings stretching from Arizona and Nevada through California and northward into Oregon and Washington, reports Xinhua news agency.

On Sunday, Las Vegas, Nevada, experienced a new all-time high temperature of 48.9 degrees Celsius, surpassing its previous record by three degrees, the National Weather Service Las Vegas said in a post on social media X, formerly Twitter. The record was officially recorded at Harry Reid International Airport.

California’s Death Valley, known for its extreme temperatures, reached 53.9 degrees Celsius on Sunday. The day before, a high temperature of 53.3 degrees Celsius was recorded at Death Valley National Park, where a visitor died from heat exposure and another was hospitalized for severe heat-related illness, according to a report by NBC News.

Other cities across the region also saw their record books rewritten. Palm Springs, California, reached a blistering 51.1 degrees Celsius on Friday, the hottest temperature ever recorded in the town. This surpassed the previous record of 50.6 degrees Celsius, set four times before, most recently in 2021. The extreme temperatures are not limited to desert areas. Sacramento, California’s capital, has experienced temperatures over 40.6 degrees Celsius for three consecutive days, while inland areas of Monterey County, typically cooled by the nearby Pacific Ocean, have seen temperatures soar well over 43.3 degrees Celsius.

The extreme heat was fueled by a strong ridge of high pressure parked over Central California. This weather pattern prevents hot air near the surface from rising higher in the atmosphere, effectively trapping the heat and creating a “heat dome” effect.

As the region swelters, the risk of wildfires has dramatically increased. Officials across

Western states warned that the combination of extreme heat and winds had spawned many new wildfires in the past week. One significant blaze, the French Fire in Mariposa County, California, began on Thursday near Yosemite National Park. By Sunday night, it had burned through 908 acres (3.67 square kilometers) and was 55 per cent contained, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

In California’s Santa Barbara County, firefighters are battling the Lake Fire, which exploded over the weekend to more than 13,000 acres. As of Sunday morning, it was only 8 per cent contained. The blaze is threatening homes in the area, including Michael Jackson’s former Neverland Ranch. Further north, crews are combating the Royal Fire, which burned in the Tahoe National Forest Sunday night. Forest service officials have reported that the fire was located in remote and rugged terrain, presenting significant challenges for firefighting operations. The heat wave and associated wildfires have prompted evacuations in multiple counties across California, including Santa Barbara, Placer, Tuolumne, Mariposa, Fresno and Butte counties.

As the heat wave continues, authorities are continuing to urge residents to take precautions. These include staying adequately hydrated, minimizing outdoor activities during the hottest times of the day, and never leaving children or pets unattended in vehicles.

Legal challenge against US alleges neglect in assessing risks of delayed offshore oil decommissioning

Alawsuit has been filed against the United States, accusing federal authorities of neglecting to properly evaluate the environmental and economic risks associated with delayed offshore oil platform decommissioning. The legal action, initiated by environmental groups, contends that the government’s failure to conduct timely assessments violates federal laws aimed at safeguarding marine ecosystems and coastal communities. The lawsuit targets the Department of the Interior and the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE), alleging that they have not adequately scrutinized the potential consequences of deferring the removal of inactive oil infrastructure in the Gulf of Mexico and other coastal regions. This delay, according to the plaintiffs, prolongs the exposure of marine life to pollutants and increases the likelihood of accidents that could harm the environment.

Environmental advocates argue that the federal government’s inaction contradicts the requirements outlined in the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and the Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act (OCSLA), which mandate comprehensive environmental impact assessments for activities that affect federal waters. In response to the lawsuit, a spokesperson for the Department of the Interior emphasized their commitment to upholding environmental standards and indicated that they would review the allegations in accordance with legal procedures.

President Biden mistakenly refers to Vice President Harris as ‘Trump’ in press briefing

During a press briefing on Thursday, President Joe Biden mistakenly referred to Vice President Kamala Harris as “Trump,” causing a momentary stir among reporters and viewers alike. The incident occurred as Biden was discussing recent policy initiatives, momentarily confusing Harris’ name with that of his predecessor, former President Donald Trump.

The slip of the tongue led to a brief pause in Biden’s remarks, followed by a correction where he clarified that he meant Vice President Harris.

The mix-up drew immediate attention on social media, with various reactions ranging from humor to political commentary. Biden’s spokesperson later acknowledged the error, attributing it to a simple verbal slip and affirming Biden’s deep respect for Vice President Harris.

The incident comes amid ongoing scrutiny of Biden’s public speaking and verbal gaffes, which have occasionally sparked controversy or speculation. However, White House officials quickly moved to downplay the incident, emphasizing Biden’s focus on current administration priorities and his close working relationship with Vice President Harris.

Trump lawyers invoke presidential immunity in attempt to overturn hush money conviction

Former President Donald Trump’s legal team launched a bid on Thursday to overturn his recent conviction related to hush money payments, arguing that Manhattan prosecutors improperly used evidence of his official acts during his presidency.

In a court filing dated July 10 but released publicly on Thursday, Trump’s defense attorneys asserted that the guilty verdict, issued on May 30 in the first criminal trial of a U.S. president, should be annulled in light of a recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling on presidential immunity.

Attorneys Todd Blanche and Emil Bove contended that the trial’s inclusion of evidence concerning Trump’s official actions constituted a fundamental error under the federal Constitution.

They specifically cited conversations between Trump and former White House aide Hope Hicks, as well as some of Trump’s Twitter posts from his tenure in office from 2017 to 2021.

“The introduction of evidence related to official acts amounted to a structural error,” wrote Blanche and Bove. “Therefore, the jury’s verdicts must be vacated.”

Earlier this month, Justice Juan Merchan postponed Trump’s sentencing for two

months following a request from his defense team. They argued that the Supreme Court’s July 1 decision, which clarified that presidents cannot face criminal charges over their official actions, meant that prosecutors should not have used evidence from Trump’s presidency in the trial.

The Supreme Court ruling specified that evidence concerning a president’s

Arkansas officials reject abortion-rights ballot measure petitions

Arkansas election officials on Wednesday rejected petitions submitted for an abortionrights ballot measure that proponents aimed to present to voters this fall in a predominantly Republican state.

The secretary of state’s office declined the petitions submitted last Friday by supporters of the proposal, citing a failure to include required statements regarding paid signature gatherers. Organizers had submitted over 101,000 signatures, surpassing the minimum requirement of 90,704 signatures from registered voters, with representation from at least 50 counties.

In a letter addressed to organizers, Secretary of State John Thurston explained that even if the signatures from volunteers were accepted, the total fell short at 87,382, below the mandated threshold. Arkansans for Limited Government, the group behind the proposed constitutional amendment, expressed their disappointment and vowed to contest the decision.

“We will vigorously challenge this unjust disqualification with all available means,” the group stated on Wednesday night. “Our commitment to this cause remains steadfast.”

The proposed measure sought to prohibit

laws banning abortion within the first 20 weeks of gestation and permit the procedure later in pregnancy under specific circumstances such as rape, incest, threats to the woman’s health or life, or fetal nonviability.

Following the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2022 ruling that removed the nationwide right to abortion, many states, including Arkansas, have seen increased efforts to allow voters to decide on abortion-related matters through ballot initiatives. Arkansas currently enforces a law that restricts abortion to cases where the mother’s life is at risk during a medical emergency.

The ballot measure faced opposition from state-level abortion opponents and did not garner support from national abortion-rights organizations like Planned Parenthood due to its allowance for potential bans on abortion after 20 weeks of pregnancy.

Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders, a Republican who opposed the measure, criticized its rejection on social media platform X, accusing abortion-rights supporters of being morally deficient and ineffective.

Thurston’s decision cited an Arkansas statute mandating that campaign groups disclose detailed statements identifying paid canvassers by name and confirming that each paid canvasser had been briefed on signature-gathering regulations.

official acts should not be admissible in a prosecution involving private matters. Trump’s lawyers asserted that this principle invalidated the verdict delivered by the Manhattan jury.

A spokesperson for Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office declined to comment on the filing, stating that prosecutors have until July 24 to respond. Previously, they dismissed Trump’s arguments as lacking merit but agreed to delay the sentencing proceedings.

Legal analysts observed that Trump faces significant challenges in overturning the hush money conviction, given that much of the case revolves around actions predating his presidency. They noted that evidence from his time in the White House primarily pertains to personal conduct rather than official duties.

The Supreme Court’s decision stemmed from a separate federal case against Trump, concerning efforts to overturn his defeat in the 2020 election to President Joe Biden. The ruling effectively postponed any potential trial in that matter until after the November 5 election.

In addition to challenging the hush money conviction, Trump’s legal team is seeking a pause in another criminal case where he faces charges related to mishandling classified documents. Trump has pleaded not guilty to all charges across these legal proceedings.

Michigan’s bird flu response amplifies COVID-era concerns among farmers

Some Michigan dairy farmers resist bird flu controls, fearing economic harm and evoking COVID-19 memories in rural areas. Michigan’s stringent measures, including farm visitor tracking, bring back unwelcome parallels to the pandemic in towns like Martin.

Since the U.S.’s first case in cattle in March, Michigan, with two of four known human cases (all dairy workers), has conducted more tests than other states with cattle infections, a survey of health departments found. Testing varies by state.

Health experts warn of a potential new pandemic, akin to COVID-19. Michigan’s proactive response sets a precedent for other states beyond federal guidelines. Early findings, including interviews with producers, health officials, and industry experts, indicate limited dairy farmer compliance. Calls from local officials may go unanswered, dairy research funds unused, and workers continue milking without extra safety measures.

US imposes sanctions on three Israelis, five entities for disturbing peace in West Bank

The US State Department on Thursday said that it has imposed sanctions on three Israelis and five entities for disturbing peace in the West Bank.

“We are imposing sanctions on three Israeli individuals and five entities connected to acts of violence against civilians in the West Bank,” the US State Department said in a statement. It said that the sanctions have been imposed on the Lehava, an organization led by USdesignated Ben Zion Gopstein that has been involved in acts of violent extremism.

“Lehava’s members have engaged in repeated acts of violence against Palestinians, often targeting sensitive or volatile areas,” the US State Department said. It said that the sanctions have also been imposed on four outposts that are owned or controlled by US-designated

In Texas, over 1 million people still without power after Hurricane Beryl

Around 1 million homes and businesses in Texas continued to endure power outages on Thursday, marking four days since Hurricane Beryl battered the state with intense winds and flooding. The situation has caused frustration among companies, officials, and residents alike, who are contending with extreme heat amidst the outage challenges. CenterPoint Energy, serving 2.3 million customers, managed to restore power to just over half of its affected customers by Thursday morning, following Beryl’s landfall near Matagorda. As Texas’ largest electricity provider, CenterPoint’s efforts are crucial in mitigating the impact of the storm.

Meanwhile, restoration hitches are impeding efforts to return to normal operations for several companies, particularly in Freeport, one of Texas’ primary energy hubs. Ongoing rainfall on Thursday further exacerbated these delays. Despite these challenges, the majority of oil and gas firms have resumed regular operations subsequent to Beryl’s landfall as a Category 1 storm. Notably, Freeport LNG, the third-largest producer of liquefied natural gas (LNG) in the U.S., began processing small amounts of natural gas on Thursday, according to data from financial firm LSEG. The company had previously scaled down production, with no further operational updates provided since Sunday.

individuals who have weaponized them as bases for violent actions to displace Palestinians.

“Outposts like these have been used to disrupt grazing lands, limit access to wells, and launch violent attacks against neighboring Palestinians,” the State Department said. The department said that the US strongly encourages the Israeli government to take immediate steps to hold these individuals and entities accountable, adding that in the absence of such steps, it will continue to impose its own accountability measures.

“The financial sanctions actions were taken pursuant to Executive Order 14115, Imposing Certain Sanctions on Persons Undermining Peace, Security, and Stability in the West Bank,” it said.

It said that the Department of the Treasury’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) concurrently issued an alert related to the financing of Israeli extremist settler violence against Palestinians in the West Bank.

“This alert supplements the one issued February 1, 2024, and provides additional red flags to assist US financial institutions in identifying and reporting suspicious activity that finances West Bank violence,” the US Department said.

It said that the US has consistently opposed actions that undermine stability in the West Bank and the prospects for peace and security for Israelis and Palestinians alike.

bring billions in losses to US in first half of 2024

The United States was hit by 15 climate disasters in the first half of this year, each with losses exceeding $1 billion, according to the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

The nation’s premier meteorological agency said in a report released this week that the disasters consisted of 13 severe storm events and two winter storms, Xinhua news agency reported.

Winter storms swept through the US Midwest and around the Great Lakes in January. Nearly 30 million people in the Midwest and around the Great Lakes were under a winter storm warning in early January.

On that day, wind-whipped snow hit the Chicago area, leaving thousands without power and leading to nearly a thousand flight and train cancellations. According to ComEd’s outage map, 2,268 power outages were reported across the city, affecting more than 96,000 customers.

Powerful storms slammed the US West Coast in February. On February 3, a severe storm system struck California, resulting in at least three fatalities, nearly 140,000 people without power, and millions under flood alerts for at least three days. The storm unleashed mudslides, flooded roadways, and triggered widespread power outages.

On February 20, a storm hit California again, bringing heavy rain, snow, and wind, leading to devastating impacts, including destructive mudslides and floods. Severe storms battered the US South in April, stretching from Texas to Florida. During a storm on April 11, one person was killed, more than 10 others injured, more than 100 homes and

buildings were damaged, and hundreds of thousands of people were left without power across the area.

In May, storms hit Iowa, Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Kentucky, killing more than 20 people and leaving numbers in the aftermath. According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, the destructive storms battering Houston, the country’s fourth-largest city, on the night of May 16 killed at least seven people, including a mother of four who was driving in her vehicle and was crushed by fallen trees.

Over the Memorial Day weekend in May, at least 20 people were killed after storms hit the US states of Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Kentucky. It was the deadliest tornado in Texas since 2015. A tornado ripped through suburban Detroit in early June. The tornado hit Michigan without warning, killing a toddler on June 6, while storms in Ohio and Maryland injured at least 13.

The quick-developing tornado struck several neighborhoods in the Detroit suburb of Livonia on June 5, according to the city’s website. The National Weather Service in Detroit confirmed on the social media platform ‘X’ that it was an EF1 tornado with a peak wind speed of 95 mph (153 kmh) that moved through Livonia. The agency said the twister traveled over 5 miles (8 km), uprooting trees and damaging homes.

The United States has sustained 391 weather and climate disasters since 1980, each causing damage of at least $1 billion. According to NOAA data, the total cost tops $2.7 trillion.

Damage averaged roughly $8.5 billion annually from 1980 to 2023, with the average surging over the last five years to $20.4 billion.

Virginia to restrict or prohibit cell phone use in public schools

Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin has issued an executive order aimed at restricting or prohibiting cell phone use for approximately 1.2 million public school students. Citing concerns over mental health challenges and academic performance among adolescents, the order, issued on Tuesday, tasks the Virginia Department of Education with developing procedures to limit cell phone use during instructional hours. Methods such as using pouches or dedicated lockers specifically for cell phones are being considered.

Exceptions will be evaluated for parental communication with children for essential reasons, as well as for students with medical requirements or during emergencies. This decision follows similar actions taken by the Los Angeles Unified School District last month and signals potential changes in New York City’s public schools. The initiative reflects a broader trend in various school districts to restrict phone and social media access due to concerns about their impact on student well-being and learning. Virginia’s Department of Education has until September 16 to finalize guidelines for the new policy, which schools are expected to implement by January 1, 2025.

US and Canada agree to update 60-year-old Columbia River treaty

The United States and Canada have reached an agreement in principle to modernize the 60-year-old Columbia River treaty, focusing on flood control and power generation. Draft amendments are set to commence in the coming weeks, marking a pivotal step in adapting to climate change and evolving community needs along this crucial waterway. U.S. President Joe Biden emphasized the necessity of updating the treaty, originally established in 1964, to better serve contemporary challenges. The amendments will prioritize the inclusion of U.S. Tribes’ and Canadian Indigenous Nations’ perspectives, aiming to rebalance energy coordination between the two nations.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau echoed these sentiments, highlighting the treaty’s potential to mitigate flood risks, advance indigenous priorities, and foster clean energy initiatives. The Columbia River, originating in the Canadian Rockies and flowing through British Columbia, Washington, and Oregon, plays a pivotal role in North American hydroelectric power production and environmental management. The treaty historically facilitated the construction of dams in the Pacific Northwest, with the United States funding their construction and Canada benefiting from hydroelectric power generation, largely through power sales to U.S. utilities.

Singapore sentences two Indian-origin men for scamming US victims

In a recent court ruling, two Singaporean men of Indian origin, Ishan Sharma and Kandhiban Letchumanansamy, have been sentenced for their involvement in a complex scam targeting victims in the United States. The duo operated through over 50 companies, funneling funds through accounts that spanned across multiple countries, including transactions originating from China and the UAE.

Ishan Sharma, 34, received a four-week jail term after pleading guilty to charges under the Companies Act. He was identified as the mastermind behind the operation, which saw more than USD 1 million funneled through two specific companies. His accomplice, Kandhiban Letchumanansamy, 36, was sentenced to one week in jail for his complicity in the scheme, failing to exercise oversight as a director of the implicated firms.

The court proceedings revealed that Sharma, a chartered accountant, recruited Kandhiban in 2017 when the latter was unemployed, offering him a nominal

position at Karmic Circle. Under the arrangement, Kandhiban served as a figurehead director across numerous entities, allegedly unaware of the illegal activities transpiring under his nominal leadership.

Prosecutors outlined that Sharma orchestrated the incorporation of companies such as Quartz Resources and Kiora Worldwide, positioning himself and his associates strategically within their structures. These entities then received substantial sums from victims of various scams, with the funds subsequently routed to offshore accounts.

Both men were implicated in similar fraudulent activities through multiple companies between 2019 and 2020, exploiting their positions to facilitate financial transactions that spanned international borders.

The sentencing marks a significant development in Singapore’s efforts to combat financial fraud, underscoring the severity with which such crimes are prosecuted within the jurisdiction.

Punjab Congress chief seeks CM’s explanation on gangster Bishnoi’s interview

Congress’ Punjab unit chief Amarinder Singh Raja Warring on Thursday said with the state police’s Special Investigation Team (SIT) confirming that gangster Lawrence Bishnoi’s infamous interview in 2023 was conducted within the state, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann must provide an explanation.

“The SIT of the Punjab Police has informed the Punjab and Haryana High Court that the viral interview of gangster Lawrence Bishnoi in 2023 was indeed conducted within Punjab, as we have been asserting since the interview aired. However, both the Punjab Police and the AAP government repeatedly denied this, insisting the interview had not taken place within the state.”

“Not only was the interview conducted in Punjab, but it was also held within the confines of a Punjab jail. This exposes the influence that a criminal like Lawrence Bishnoi has over the administration and the

Will meet Thackeray Sharad Pawar and Akhilesh in Mumbai, says Mamata Banerjee

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday said that she will separately meet Shiv SenaUBT chief Uddhav Thackeray, NCP-SP chief Sharad Pawar and the Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav during her two-day trip to Mumbai to attend the marriage function of industrialist Mukesh Ambani’s son Anant Ambani.

“I will meet Uddhav Thackeray, whom I have not met for quite some time, there tomorrow. I will have political discussions with him. I will also go to the residence of Sharad Pawar and meet him. I heard that Akhilesh Yadav will be there. I will also meet him. I will be coming back to Kolkata on Saturday,” she told media persons while leaving for Mumbai.

However, she did not specify the subjects of her discussion with the three other regional party leaders. The Chief Minister lambasted a section of the media for allegedly creating negative propaganda against her party by bringing some old videos regarding mob violence just before the bypolls for four Assembly constituencies in the state on Wednesday. “This was done deliberately to create false propaganda before the polls. Even an event of 2021 was highlighted. I might adopt legal steps against such things,” she said.

“It’s disheartening that a respected officer like DGP Gaurav Yadav was swayed by the government to claim the interview did not occur in Punjab. I have raised this issue multiple times and will continue to do so. How could such an interview take place within a Punjab jail? I now demand an explanation from the Chief Minister, who previously

dismissed our allegations and confidently asserted that such an interview from within a Punjab Police jail was impossible,” he added.

“How can justice be served for Sidhu Moosewala and his family when the Punjab government appears to be in collusion with a criminal like Lawrence Bishnoi? Bishnoi seems to enjoy immunity, receiving preferential treatment even within prison walls. This raises serious concerns about the administration’s integrity,” the state Congress chief added.

flood situation sees further improvement, 14 lakh people still affected

Assam’s overall flood situation has significantly improved during the past one week and there was no casualty on Thursday while around 14 lakh people remain affected in 26 of the state’s 35 districts, Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) officials said.

However, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday said that fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, is very likely over Andaman and Nicobar Islands, sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Sikkim, Bihar, and northeast India during the next five days.

According to the ASDMA officials, the number of affected people has come down from over 24.20 lakh in 30 districts as of July 5. Till Wednesday, at least 84 people died due to the flood and around 10 more people died due to landslides and other calamities after the monsoon rain started early last month.

The Delhi High Court has ordered the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) to demolish all unauthorized constructions on the Yamuna river bank. A bench, headed by Acting Chief Justice Manohan, directed the DDA Vice Chairman to remove all encroachments and illegal construction on the Yamuna river bank, river bed and drains flowing into the river.

Apart from the demolition of all unauthorized constructions in the Shaheen Bagh area, the plea, filed through advocate Sumit Kumar, further sought a direction to prevent illegal construction on the river

Wild animals in the Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve (KNPTR) were also affected by the flood as a vast area of the park has been inundated and park authorities continued their efforts to rescue the animals and to prevent poaching. Till Thursday evening, 135 wild animals have been rescued while 174 animals, including deer, rhino, and hog deer, have drowned in flood waters, KNPTR Director Sonali Ghosh told the media.

SC to pronounce its verdict on CM Kejriwal’s plea challenging ED arrest on Friday

The Supreme Court will, on Friday, pronounce its judgment on a plea filed by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal challenging his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in the excise policy case and subsequent custody.

As per the causelist published on the website of the apex court, a bench, headed by Justice Sanjiv Khanna, will deliver its verdict on July 12. The bench, also comprising Justice Dipankar Datta, on May 17, had reserved its verdict on CM Kejriwal’s petition contending that the ED is required to demonstrate the “necessity to arrest” on the “materials available” with a “reason to believe” that he has been guilty of an offense under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002.

During the hearing, the apex court had ordered the AAP supremo to be released on 21-day interim bail till June 1 in view of the general elections. Meanwhile, a Delhi court on Tuesday took cognisance of the supplementary prosecution complaint filed by the ED against CM Kejriwal and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).

Taking cognizance, special judge Kaveri Baweja issued a production warrant for Kejriwal for July 12.

Recently, the Delhi High Court stayed a trial court’s order granting bail to CM Kejriwal in the money laundering case, saying that the documents and arguments were not appreciated by the trial court.

bank and floodplains in the near future.

The plea contended that the illegal construction in question has been going on without any permission or regard for environmental concerns and will

endanger the ecologically fragile Yamuna floodplains.

The respondent authorities admitted in the court that the floodplain area is a prohibited activity zone and encroachment in this area leads to diversion of water, leading to floods in adjacent areas.

The Delhi High Court took note of the submission that as per many experts, floods in the national capital are manmade as they have been caused primarily due to encroachment of drains, river banks and river beds. Ordering the DDA Vice Chairman to file an Action Taken Report within six weeks, the Delhi HC directed the matter to be listed on September 9 for compliance.

No peace talks ongoing between Kuki-Zo and Meiteis, says Manipur’s apex tribal body

The Kuki Inpi Manipur (KIM), the apex body of the KukiZo tribals in the state, on Thursday said that no peace talks are being held between the Kuki-Zo people and Meiteis. KIM’s Information and Publicity SecretaryJanghaolun Haokip stated that his organization is completely taken aback by the supposed “peace talks” held between the two communities.

In sharp contrast, the KIM would remain committed to continuing a political boycott of the present Manipur government for “orchestrating and perpetrating the persecution against the Kuki-Zo people”.

“The Manipur state government continues to utilize government machinery in its ruthless campaign against our people inflicting untold damage,” the tribal leader alleged, adding the KIM “cannot negotiate with our oppressors for justice and equality for our people”.

It said that a demand for a Union Territory with a legislature for the KukiZo people has long been forwarded to the Center for a constitutional course of action

and the Kuki-Zo people are resolute to commit to the same until its fulfillment.

“Any supposed peace talk or political negotiations, without the knowledge of the KIM and its constituent organizations, is only illusionary. The KIM and its constituent organizations are the only legitimate bodies to maneuver a way forward for the Kuki-Zo people,” the tribal body stated.

Chief Minister Biren Singh on Wednesday said that talks between

the Kuki-Zo and Meitei communities involved in the ongoing Manipur crisis have begun in order to restore peace under the supervision of the Central government.

At least 220 people have been killed, 1,500 injured and 70,000 displaced since violence broke out between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities on May 3 last year. The ethnic riots began after a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ was organized in the hill districts to protest the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe status.

Kremlin says NATO expansion into Ukraine ‘unacceptable threat’

The expansion of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) into Ukraine is an “unacceptable threat” to Russia’s security, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Thursday. Peskov’s remarks came following a joint declaration adopted Wednesday at the NATO summit in Washington, which stated that “Ukraine’s future is in NATO.” Peskov said that the alliance is “de-facto fully involved in the Ukrainian conflict,” adding that its military infrastructure is progressively moving towards Russia’s borders, reported Xinhua news agency.

“From the very beginning, we said that NATO expansion into the territory of Ukraine is an unacceptable threat to us, our existence, our security,” Peskov said. He said the measures adopted at the summit compel Russia to take appropriate steps to contain the bloc since it may threaten the country’s national security.

“This will require us to form thoughtful, coordinated and effective response measures to contain NATO,” the spokesperson said.

Fire in 11th-century cathedral in France’s Rouen contained, damage unclear

The spire of France’s famous Rouen cathedral caught fire on Thursday, and while the blaze has been contained, the extent of the damage is yet to be ascertained, officials said. The cause of the fire in the gothic Notre-Dame de Rouen’s 150-meter-high spire - the tallest church spire in France - was still unknown, Rouen Mayor Nicolas Mayer-Rossignol posted on X.

The cathedral, built in the 11th century, has been evacuated and a security cordon placed around it, officials said. Images on social media showed flames near the top of the cathedral, where restoration work had been going on since 2015, as per French media.

While the local administration said that the blaze had been contained, the extent of damage to the structure is unclear for now.

Briefing reporters on the incident, Culture Minister Rachida Dati termed the fire accidental. Meanwhile Archbishop of Rouen, Monsignor Dominique Lebrun said that the

South Korea, NATO ink deal on military airworthiness certification

South Korea has officially signed an agreement with NATO to streamline and enhance military airworthiness certification processes. This milestone agreement marks a significant step in bolstering defense cooperation between South Korea and NATO member countries.

The accord, finalized after negotiations, aims to standardize and mutually recognize military aircraft certifications, ensuring compatibility and interoperability in joint military operations. This development is expected to facilitate smoother exchanges of military aircraft and technology between South Korea and NATO allies.

In a joint statement, South Korean and NATO officials expressed confidence that the agreement will strengthen defense capabilities and deepen strategic partnerships in the AsiaPacific region and beyond. The specifics of the certification framework and its implementation timeline will be detailed in subsequent discussions between the parties involved.

This agreement underscores South Korea’s commitment to enhancing its defense capabilities through international collaboration and adherence to rigorous airworthiness standards set by NATO.

UN projects world’s population to peak within this century

The United Nations has released a report projecting that the global population will peak this century. According to the World Population Prospects 2024: Summary of Results, it is expected that the world’s population will peak in the mid-2080s, growing over the next 60 years from 8.2 billion people in 2024 to around 10.3 billion in the mid-2080s, and then returning to around 10.2 billion by the end of the century, Xinhua news agency reported on Thursday. The size of the world’s population in 2100 is now expected to be six per cent lower—or 700 million fewer—than anticipated a decade ago.

“The demographic landscape has evolved greatly in recent years,” said Li Junhua, Under-Secretary-General for

Economic and Social Affairs.

“In some countries, the birth rate is now even lower than previously anticipated, and we are also seeing slightly faster declines in some high-fertility regions.”

“The earlier and lower peak is a hopeful sign. This could mean reduced environmental pressures from human impact due to lower aggregate consumption. However, slower population growth will not eliminate the need to reduce the average impact attributable to the activities of each individual person,” he noted.

The earlier population peak is due to several factors, including lower levels of fertility in some of the world’s largest countries. Globally, women are having one child fewer, on average, than they did around 1990, according to the report.

Israel’s Defense minister calls for state inquiry over Hamas’s Oct 7 attack

Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant has called for the establishment of a national inquiry committee into Hamas’s October 7 attack, which will also probe the conduct of the government, military, and other security agencies. The planned National Commission of Inquiry would be an independent body headed by a retired judge with wide-ranging investigative powers, Xinhua news agency reported.

At the graduation ceremony of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) officers’ course, Gallant said on Thursday that the commission “should be objective ... it should check all of us—the government, the army, and the security agencies. It should check me as well as the Prime Minister (Benjamin Netanyahu), Army Chief, Shin Bet Chief, the IDF, and the national bodies”.

Gallant is the most senior official to call for a national investigation into the attack, during which thousands of Hamas militants caught Israel by surprise, crossing from Gaza and killing about 1,200 people and kidnapping about 250 others.

Tesla granted extension to prepare defense in insurance overcharge class action

Ajudge in California has granted Tesla additional time to prepare its defense against allegations of overcharging for insurance, as the electric vehicle maker cited delays in gathering necessary information. Judge Michael Markman of Alameda Superior Court, based in Oakland, announced during a hearing on Tuesday that a decision on certifying the case as a class action would be postponed until October 2025, a later date than initially proposed by the plaintiff’s attorneys.

The lawsuit, brought by a Tesla customer on behalf of drivers in 11 states, alleges that Tesla inflated insurance premiums based on misleading crash warnings rather than actual driving behavior. The complaint accuses Tesla of

EU accepts Apple’s offer to open up contactless payments

The European Union has accepted Apple’s commitments regarding the operation of Apple Pay, thereby resolving a lengthy antitrust investigation. Margrethe Vestager, EVP of the Commission overseeing competition, announced that Apple’s commitments address concerns about potential competition restrictions in mobile wallets on iPhones.

Starting July 25, developers will be permitted to offer mobile wallet services on iPhones with features like ‘tap and go,’ previously exclusive to Apple Pay. The investigation, initiated in 2020, focused on Apple’s terms for integrating Apple Pay and concerns over NFC technology access.

The Commission found Apple’s actions potentially anti-competitive, as it limited NFC technology access to rival wallet developers. With the investigation concluded, iPhone users in Europe will soon enjoy using their preferred mobile wallets with all functionalities, including tap-and-go, Double-Click, and FaceID.

During the hearing, Tesla’s attorney, Min Kang, explained that the company was facing significant delays in gathering necessary information due to the involvement of multiple states and the recent departure of a key Tesla employee who had been assisting outside counsel. Tesla, headquartered in Austin, Texas, has previously denied any wrongdoing and faced unsuccessful attempts last year and in June to dismiss certain claims in the case.

As of now, Tesla, Min Kang, and representatives for the plaintiff have not responded to requests for comment on the latest developments in the ongoing legal proceedings.

In a surprising turn, US consumer prices experienced their first monthly decline in four years, according to data released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The Consumer Price Index (CPI) dropped by 0.1% in June, driven by lower prices for used cars and trucks, alongside minor decreases in food and energy costs.

Boeing to plead guilty to fraud in US probe of fatal 737 MAX crashes

Boeing has agreed to plead guilty to criminal charges related to fraud in connection with the U.S. Department of Justice’s investigation into the fatal crashes involving its 737 MAX aircraft. The plea deal comes after a lengthy probe into Boeing’s handling of the design and certification of the 737 MAX, which was involved in two crashes that claimed 346 lives in Indonesia and Ethiopia in 2018 and 2019, respectively.

The charges stem from allegations that Boeing misled regulators and airlines about the safety of the 737 MAX, particularly concerning the Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System (MCAS), a flight control system implicated in both crashes. The plea agreement includes a substantial financial penalty, reportedly totaling billions of dollars, as well as ongoing compliance and cooperation with regulatory oversight.

Boeing’s decision to plead guilty marks a significant development in the aftermath of the crashes, which prompted global scrutiny of the company’s safety practices and regulatory

oversight. The 737 MAX was grounded worldwide for nearly two years following the second crash, leading to massive financial losses for Boeing and significant repercussions throughout the aviation industry.

The plea deal is expected to bring some

According to Costco, the adjustment aims to support its business model amidst economic challenges like inflation. CEO Craig Jelinek and CFO Richard Galanti had previously cited economic conditions as factors influencing the timing of fee adjustments.

Competitors like Sam’s Club and

U.S. appeals court sets test for college athletes’ employee status, potentially eligible for minimum wage

AU.S. appeals court on Thursday established a framework for determining whether college athletes can be classified as employees of their schools and the NCAA, potentially qualifying them for minimum wage protections. In a groundbreaking decision, the Philadelphia-based 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals outlined that athletes may be considered employees under federal wage laws if they primarily provide services for their schools’ benefit in exchange for compensation or benefits, whether explicit or implicit.

The ruling permits a group of former college athletes to proceed with a proposed class action lawsuit against the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and their respective institutions. This follows a significant $2.8 million settlement reached by the NCAA in May to settle class-action claims alleging antitrust violations related to compensation and benefits for student-athletes. Additionally, in March, men’s basketball players at Dartmouth College made history as the first U.S. college athletes to vote in favor of unionization, a decision currently under challenge by the university.

While the 3rd Circuit did not conclusively decide whether college athletes are employees under federal wage laws, it provided a structured approach for courts to determine this status in future cases. The court firmly rejected the NCAA’s argument that student-athletes cannot be considered employees due to their amateur status. Circuit Judge Luis Restrepo, writing for the court, criticized the circular reasoning behind the NCAA’s stance, asserting that the notion that studentathletes should not be paid is increasingly outdated and unconvincing.

Russia compensates athletes excluded from Paris games

The Russian Olympic Committee has provided compensation to 245 athletes who did not qualify to compete at the upcoming Paris Games this month, as reported by the RIA state news agency on Thursday. Athletes from Russia and Belarus, both barred from the Games due to geopolitical tensions and required to participate as neutrals without national symbols, underwent additional scrutiny to ensure they had no ties to the Russian military or supported its actions in Ukraine, which Moscow condemned as an orchestrated exclusion.

“We have compensated 245 athletes who were initially denied participation in international competitions or did not receive neutral status,” stated Vladimir Sengleyev, General Director of the Russian Olympic Committee, as quoted by RIA.

Among those compensated was Artur Dalaloyan, a 28-year-old gymnast and

gold medalist from the Tokyo 2020 Games, who received approximately 500,000 roubles ($5,600). RIA did not disclose details on the compensation received by other athletes or their respective sports.

The number of Russian participants heading to Paris has significantly reduced to just over a dozen athletes, following decisions by several sports federations to withdraw their squads, citing what they perceive as humiliating conditions. Only 16 Russian athletes are scheduled to participate in the Games, compared to 335 athletes at the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics.

Indian President Droupadi Murmu unveils iconic Durand Cup Trophy

There are not many football tournaments that have the rich and deep heritage like the Durand Cup. As the iconic footballing spectacle set for its 133rd edition, the trophies were unveiled by the President of India, Droupadi Murmu in an event hosted at the Rashtrapati Bhavan Cultural Center (RBCC) on Wednesday. The 2024 edition of the tournament will take place across four cities in India. The 2024 edition of the tournament is scheduled to begin on July 27 with the final set for August 31.

Turning his attention to the future of Indian cricket, Afridi singled out Shubman Gill as a promising talent who could follow in the footsteps of legends like Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli. He praised the Indian Premier

League (IPL) for its role in nurturing young talents and enhancing India’s cricketing depth.

“The IPL has created a vast pool of talent in India. They can field two strong teams from the talent available,” Afridi commented, highlighting the league’s impact on Indian cricket. Regarding cricket administration in Pakistan, Afridi advocated for stability in leadership within the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). He stressed the need for a longer tenure for the PCB Chairman to provide stability and continuity, which would in turn benefit the team’s performance under consistent leadership.

“The PCB Chairman should have a tenure of at least three years so that the captaincy of Pakistan can also be stable for 2-3 years. Meritbased appointments will yield positive results,” Afridi emphasized, suggesting that sustained leadership is crucial for achieving success in Pakistani cricket.

Shahid Afridi’s insights reflect his belief in the power of cricket to bridge divides between nations, while also advocating for structural stability and meritocracy within cricket administrations for both Pakistan and India.

European anti-doping agencies urge increased testing oversight in U.S.

More than 30 European anti-doping agencies expressed concern on Thursday, urging a closer examination of testing protocols for professional and college athletes in the United States, particularly those participating in major international events like the upcoming Olympics.

In an open letter addressed to the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), signed by organizations including the Central European Anti-Doping Organisation (CEADO), the agencies highlighted their apprehension that athletes within American college and professional sports systems operate outside the World Anti-Doping Code’s regulatory framework. They called for WADA to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the situation.

While not directly accusing the United States, the letter underscored longstanding concerns among antidoping officials regarding inconsis-

tent testing practices in prominent American leagues such as the National Football League (NFL), Major League Baseball (MLB), National Basketball Association (NBA), and National Hockey League (NHL).

“It is alarming to us that athletes competing at elite levels in the college and professional sports systems are not subject to the provisions of the World AntiDoping Code,” the CEADO stated. “Based on available data, the sampling rates in some of these countries are troubling in relation to the number of athletes participating in major global competitions like the Olympics and world championships. We are deeply concerned that these athletes may not be adequately tested prior to these significant sporting events.”

The call for enhanced oversight comes amid ongoing efforts to uphold fairness and integrity in global sports through rigorous anti-doping measures.

“I’ve been talking about [doing] two albums the past eight years and that’s a dance album and an acoustic album,” she said on Instagram Live. “I haven’t yet made the acoustic album. Well, we never stop writing. But I finally made the dance album, the album I always wanted to make.

Kartik Aaryan lays bare the reason for his most profound break-up

Bollywood star Kartik Aaryan, who was recently seen in the sports biopic ‘Chandu Champion’, has shared that his most profound break-up happened during his college days. Kartik recently appeared on Season 2 of the podcast ‘Be A Man, Yaar’ hosted by Nikhil Taneja. He said on the podcast, “My first heartbreak was in school. I couldn’t muster the courage to express my feelings; I simply smiled at her.”

Sharing the incident from his college life, he said, “My girlfriend told me she couldn’t be with me if I pursued acting. She said she couldn’t handle the life of an actor.” The actor also recalled how he felt after facing rejections in his movie auditions, as he said, “It was very harsh. It’s like you don’t exist. Lagta tha ki aapki koi value hai nahi.”

The fear of being identified as “unfit” led him to be frustrated with the entire process of auditions. However, reflecting on the change that he has seen over the years, he said, “My loneliness has been compensated by my fans.”

He also spoke about getting “bitter” during his early days in the film industry because of how tough it is for outsiders to get noticed.

He said, “Main line mein laga hoon aur dusro ko line mein lagne ki zaroorat bhi nahi

padh rahi (while I stand in the queue, others don’t even need to be a part of the line). Wahan chai pi rahe hain jahan main auditions de raha hoon. There was never an even playing field. Aur wo toh aaj bhi rehta hai (things are the same even today).”

Diljit Dosanjh shares ‘hilarious’ simple tips to cleanse your aura

Punjabi sensation Diljit Dosanjh has shared simple tips for cleansing the aura, which include mountains and his latest film ‘Jatt & Juliet 3’. Diljit took to Instagram and shared a reel.

In the clip, he is seen hiking on a mountain, posing in front of a waterfall, and even drinking from a river.

However, it’s the entertaining voiceover that stands out.

The clip begins with a soothing voiceover by Diljit, saying, “Apne kabhi mehsoos kiya hai ke duniya main kaam karte huye logo se milte huye na chahate huye bhi bahut saare thoughts hum apne saath lele te hai jo shayad humaare nahi the jinka humaare zindagi main koi arth nahi tha aur fir woh humain pareshaan karte hai (Have you ever felt that while meeting people, we unintentionally carry many thoughts with us that perhaps weren’t ours and didn’t mean anything in our lives, yet they bother us).”

He suggests that if these unwanted thoughts bog one down, then going to the mountains can help.

The actor-singer then said that once going to the mountains, one can rediscover their inner child. He calmly advises recalling small moments of happiness and being thankful to God.

In a humorous tone, he adds, “Metvarse ke chakkar main jisko experience karne aaye the kahin woh na reh jaaye… Chinta na karein agar pahaad dur padh rahe hain toh ‘Jatt and Juliet 3’ dekhkar aaye saari zindagi ka maksad mil jayega. Aankhein khul jaayegi over (If, in the pursuit of experiencing something new, you end up losing yourself... Don’t worry, if the mountains are far away, watch ‘Jatt and Juliet 3’ and you’ll find the purpose of life).”

He captioned the video: “Simple way to cleanse your aura.” Directed by Jagdeep Sidhu, ‘Jatt & Juliet 3’ also stars Neeru Bajwa. The film was released on June 28.

Kartik also gave his point of view on the conversations around the misogyny of his monologues during ‘Pyaar Ka Punchnama’, and said if the script is good, he will do a ‘Pyaar Ka Punchnama 3’ today as well.

Taylor Swift performs ‘Mary’s Song’ for first time in 16 years

Pop icon Taylor Swift finally treated her fans to a song they had waited years to hear live.

The singer-songwriter surprised the sold-out crowd at her Eras Tour show in Amsterdam by performing a mashup of ‘Mary’s Song’, ‘So High School’, and ‘Everything Has Changed’ during the secret songs segment, reports People.

At the end of the mashup, Swift sang the closing lyrics to the 2006 classic ‘Mary’s Song’, which has taken on new meaning since she started dating NFL star Travis Kelce, “I’ll be 87, you’ll be 89 / I’ll still look at you like the stars that shine / In the sky, oh my my my.”

According to People, the ‘Fortnight’ singer had a big smile on her face as she performed the song for the first time since 2008. Fans cheered as they heard those lyrics because the Kansas City Chiefs player’s jersey number is 87, and Swift was born in 1989 (and has an album called 1989).

Kelce was present for this special moment. He has become a fixture at Swift’s record-breaking stadium tour and even joined her onstage for a show in London last month. Among the audience members who experienced the moment live were

Purnima Nath’s candidacy: A commitment to change and leadership Interview

At the heart of Purnima Nath’s candidacy lies a deep-seated belief in the transformative power of inclusivity. Born in India and having immigrated to the United States, Nath brings a unique perspective shaped by her experiences as an immigrant and a woman of color. Her platform resonates with a commitment to championing policies that foster economic growth, educational reform, and healthcare accessibility – issues that directly impact the everyday lives of Wisconsinites.

In a stirring dialogue between Dr. Avi Verma, Publisher of the IndoUS Tribune, and Ms. Purnima Nath, Republican candidate for Wisconsin’s 4th Congressional District, the contours of Nath’s vision for her community and country emerged with clarity and conviction. The conversation, steeped in both her personal journey and political aspirations, underscored the importance of diversity, innovation, and effective governance in shaping the future of America.

Nath brings a unique perspective shaped by her Indian heritage and extensive professional background. During recent discussions, Nath passionately highlighted the plight of legal immigrants, particularly the challenges faced by over a million Indian Americans waiting for green card processing due to country caps imposed decades ago under U.S. immigration laws. She pointedly criticized the disparity where illegal immigrants receive what she described as lavish accommodations compared to the legal immigration process, which she views as neglected and

background or color. Nath aims to foster understanding and cooperation across diverse demographics, believing in the potential for shared values to bridge political divides and effect positive change.

As she continues to engage with voters in a historically Democratic stronghold, Nath remains optimistic about her prospects. Her campaign focuses on principles of equality, justice, and inclusive representation, aiming to challenge longstanding political norms and offer a fresh perspective in Wisconsin’s political arena.

With a background spanning engineering, software engineering, and management, Ms. Nath has traversed diverse professional terrains before embarking on her current path in public service. Notably, she previously contested for Milwaukee County executive as the sole conservative candidate, reflecting her steadfast commitment to civic engagement and community leadership. Her upbringing and experiences as an Indian immigrant in the United States have deeply influenced her worldview, emphasizing themes of faith, hard work, and a steadfast belief in the American dream. Nath eloquently shared her personal journey during recent interviews, portraying a narrative of resilience and determination in pursuit of opportunity and inclusivity.

Central to Nath’s discourse is her passionate advocacy for the Indian community, rooted in her deep appreciation for India’s heritage and history. Her entry into politics was motivated by what she perceived as unwarranted attacks and biased media portrayals, which fueled her commitment to advocating for policies that transcend religious and racial divides. She forthrightly acknowledges instances of discrimination against Hindus while championing policies grounded in the principles of shared humanity and unity rather than divisive categorizations.

This advocacy underscores Nath’s dedication to fostering a more inclusive and equitable society, one that values diversity and respects cultural pluralism as fundamental to the American identity.

During the interview, Ms. Nath articulated a comprehensive vision centered on public safety, economic development, and fiscal responsibility. She underscored her intention to collaborate with governmental departments to identify inefficiencies and redirect resources toward critical community needs, a strategy informed by her extensive experience in management consulting and nonprofit leadership.

Ms. Nath’s platform extends beyond local issues to encompass national concerns such as national security, border security, immigration, terrorism, education, and economic policies. Her perspective as a legal immigrant lends unique insights into geopolitical matters that directly impact the well-being of communities and the nation at large.

A vocal advocate for justice and security, Ms. Nath expressed concerns about the divisive nature of contemporary politics, emphasizing the importance of unity and community development over partisan divides. She highlighted the detrimental effects of political correctness on societal cohesion and stressed the need for pragmatic governance to address corruption, crime, fraud, and educational integrity.

Educationally, Ms. Nath holds an MBA from the prestigious Northwestern University Kellogg School of Business, complementing her technical engineering background with strategic management acumen. She has leveraged her expertise to found Spindle India, Inc., a nonprofit organization, and to organize the successful ethnic festival IndiaFest Wisconsin, demonstrating her commitment to cultural enrichment and community engagement.

Looking forward, Ms. Nath’s candidacy symbolizes resilience and determination in the face of longstanding political dynamics in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, which she argues have been dominated by left-leaning influences since 1949. Her campaign aims to inject fresh perspectives and effective leadership into local and national discourse, advocating for policies that prioritize community welfare and equitable opportunity.

As voters prepare to make their decision, Ms. Purnima Nath invites constituents to join her in a collective effort to build a brighter, safer, and more prosperous future for Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Her candidacy embodies the promise of diversity, inclusivity, and effective governance, offering a compelling vision for progress in the 4th District and beyond.

Ms. Nath’s interview with the Indo-Us Tribune serves as a testament to her unwavering dedication to public service and her commitment to advancing principles of equality, justice, and opportunity. Her candidacy represents a pivotal opportunity for constituents to embrace positive change and shape a more cohesive and prosperous community for generations to come.

Estate & Gift Planning

We hear horror stories of celebrities & billionaires dying INTESTATE (notable examples include Prince, Howard Hughes, etc) & it’s not because they lack access to financial planning. When a person dies intestate, i.e. without a Will or Trust, his/her estate is the default beneficiary. There is also a default plan for distribution of assets to relatives. PROBATE COURT will appoint an EXECUTOR, if one isn’t named already in the Will or trust, for the resolution of debts, bills, last expenses, taxes & distribution of assets among the heirs. The affairs are settled publicly. After probate, all matters related to the deceased person are deemed settled & no further claims remain on the estate or the heirs.

States have SMALL ESTATE exemptions from probate. So, if most assets are transferred through joint accounts, POD/TOD (Totten trusts), living trusts, beneficiary designations (IRAs, 401k/403b, pensions, annuities, insurance), & the remaining assets are under state’s small estate limit, public probate is avoided. It’s important for people with LIVING TRUSTS to keep non-Trust assets (checking accounts, cars, household property) under the state’s small estate limit. These small estate limits vary a lot – CA $184.5K; IL $100K; VT only $10K. In many states, just owing car(s), household furnishings & having some money in checking/saving will make the estate probatable. Wills vs living trusts vs extensive use of joint accounts & POD/TOD is a popular topic of discussion. For estates of moderate complexity, living trust may be worth

the headache & expense. If minors are involved, the trust can specify details such as guardian, provisions for educational & general expenses, arrangements for any disabilities, some life event triggers for release of funds, etc. Multistep succession plans can also be included. Be sure to fund the trust by retitling most assets.

People can give annual GIFTS up to the annual gift exclusion amount (in 2024: $18K for individuals, $36K for couples) to any person(s) without tax implications. For annual gifts in excess of the annual exclusion amounts, Form 709 must be filed. The state 529 annual contribution limits are the same as the annual federal gift exclusion limit, but 5-year pull-forward of these amounts is allowed for 529s. Form 709 filings are to keep track of excess gifts over lifetime that exceeded the annual exclusion amounts. While no taxes are due on these excess annual gifts, these excess gifts will cut into the lifetime UNIFIED/combined estate & gift EXEMPTION (in 2024: $13.61 million for individuals, $27.22 million for couples).

There is unlimited MARITAL EXEMPTION for the surviving spouse. PORTABILITY election for the unused estate & gift exemption for the deceased spouse can significantly increase the lifetime estate & gift exemption for the surviving spouse ($13.61-27.22 million in 2024 with portability election vs $13.61 million without). Years ago, when estate & gift exemptions were low, living trusts used BYPASS TRUSTS to fully utilize individual estate & gift exemptions, but those devices may be less useful now. Accounts such as state 529s & DAFs (donor advised funds) move

assets out of the estate. Except for some short-term clawbacks that may be possible, these asset shifts are irreversible or have penalties & taxes for personal withdrawals. Charitable donations also reduce the estate, provide tax benefits, & the QCDs after 70 from Traditional IRAs reduce future RMDs.

MEDICAID eligible estate planning involves special trusts that are recognized by the Medicare as exempt from the Medicaid lookback period of 5 years. Medicaid eligibility requires drawdown of most financial assets but some assets are left for the subsistence of the other spouse. Federal ESTATE TAX rates are 18-40% on taxable gross estate beyond the lifetime estate & gift exemption; note the distinction between probatable estate vs taxable estate. Most states don’t have estate taxes, but 12 states & DC (CT, HI, IL, ME, MD, MA, MN, NY, OR, RI, VT & DC) have some state estate taxes (for IL, 0.08-16% over $4 million); six states have inheritance taxes (IA, KY, MD, NE, NJ, PA).

2017 Tax Cut & Jobs Act (TCJA) provisions are expiring in December 2025. A big change will be that the lifetime estate & gift exemption will be cut almost in half in 2026. The estate planning actions taken by 2025 wouldn’t be affected whether some provisions of TCJA are extended. Couples may do partial estate planning by completing the estate plan for one spouse now under the current TCJA & leaving the estate plan open/flexible for the other spouse to account for changes, if any, later. BENEFICIARIES come into picture only after the account holder is deceased (unlike joint- or co- owners).

PRIMARY beneficiaries are the first in line, then the CONTINGENT beneficiaries. There can be named beneficiaries, defined beneficiary classes (e.g. all my children, or grandchildren), PER STIRPE specifications (by family branch). In annuities, the terms used may be 2nd ANNUITANT or SURVIVOR (that includes the annuity account holder). People & non-people (trusts, organizations, charities, pets) beneficiaries may have different options & restrictions. There are special considerations for beneficiaries for accounts such as workplace retirement plans (pensions, 401k, 403b), 529, 529-ABLE, UTMA, HSA, DAF.

For most accounts with named beneficiaries (IRA, 401k, 403b, insurance), financial institutions will require the copies of death certificates. But for some account actions, letters from executors & copies of the probate court orders may be required. Prompt notifications of death should also be made to employers, retirement plans/HR, insurance companies, Social Security, credit card companies, etc. It’s important to keep beneficiaries updated, otherwise, a significant amount of money may go unintentionally to a former spouse, or unintended heirs, creating troubles for the current spouse & beneficiaries. It’s best to specify beneficiaries where required, but use the other tools (Wills, trusts) for the rest. Estate planning is a complex topic that has many legal aspects. Laws & rules keep changing. There are complications for noncitizen spouses. Always consult estate lawyers or elder law specialists before taking major actions.

Unmasking the dark nexus:

The Hathras incident, exploitation by fake godmen, and the political patronage corruption

In recent years, India has witnessed a troubling rise in the influence of selfstyled godmen, who exploit the faith of millions for personal gain, political power, and perpetration of heinous crimes. The tragic Hathras incident, involving a stampede at one of Swami Bhola Nath’s gatherings, which claimed over 100 lives, starkly highlights the dangerous consequences of blind faith and unchecked power.

This incident is a chilling reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by women, particularly those from marginalized communities, and the sinister activities of fraudulent spiritual leaders.

The Chilling Hathras Incident In Hathras, Swami Bhola Nath, also known as Baba Bhola Ram, was convicted in 2018 for raping a woman who sought his spiritual guidance. This case epitomizes the broader pattern of abuse perpetrated by these fraudulent leaders, who often operate with impunity due to political connections and the blind faith of their followers. The subsequent stampede at one of his gatherings, resulting in over 100 deaths, underscores the unchecked power these godmen wield, often at the expense of their devotees’ safety.

Prominent Cases and Crimes

The exposure of fake godmen in India has revealed a disturbing pattern of abuse and exploitation committed under the guise of spirituality. These self-styled spiritual leaders have been implicated in numerous heinous crimes, including sexual assault,

fraud, and even murder. Despite their criminal activities, many of these godmen continue to wield significant influence due to their political connections and the unwavering faith of their followers. The following cases highlight the most notorious examples of such figures, detailing their crimes and the impact on their devotees.

Asaram Bapu: A prominent spiritual leader, Asaram Bapu was convicted in 2018 for raping a minor girl at his ashram. This conviction revealed a network of sexual abuse and other criminal activities disguised under spiritual practices. Despite his imprisonment, Asaram continues to

command a significant following, highlighting the deep-seated faith people place in these figures.

Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh: The leader of the Dera Sacha Sauda sect, Ram Rahim Singh, was convicted in 2017 for raping two female followers. His conviction triggered violent protests from his supporters, demonstrating the immense control he wielded. He was also convicted for the murders of a journalist and a former Dera manager.

Sant Rampal: Arrested in 2014 after a standoff with police, Sant Rampal was wanted for murder. The discovery

Opinion

of five women’s bodies and a child’s corpse at his ashram exposed the lethal dangers of blind faith.

Swami Premananda: Convicted of multiple rapes and murders, Swami Premananda’s case underscores the extreme violence some godmen can inflict under the guise of religion.

Narayan Sai: Following in the footsteps of his father Asaram Bapu, Narayan Sai was convicted of rape, reflecting a disturbing pattern of abuse within certain godmen’s families.

Swami Amrita Chaitanya: Accused of financial fraud and sexual exploitation, Swami Amrita Chaitanya’s case highlights the wide-reaching criminal activities of these godmen.

Ichchadhari Sant Swami Bhimanand: Known for his claims of miraculous abilities, Bhimanand was arrested for running a prostitution racket, revealing the manipulative tactics used by some godmen.

Virendra Dev Dixit: Currently absconding, Virendra Dev Dixit is accused of wrongful confinement and sexual exploitation, showcasing the difficulties in bringing such individuals to justice.

Paramahamsa Nithyananda: Despite

numerous allegations of sexual abuse and fraud, Nithyananda maintains a significant following, showing the deep influence some godmen have over their devotees.

Radhe Maa (Sukhvinder Kaur): Accused of dowry harassment and running a cult-like organization, Radhe Maa’s opulent lifestyle starkly contrasts with her spiritual teachings. Swami Om: Known for his controversial behavior, Swami Om has faced accusations of assault and fraud, damaging the reputation of genuine spiritual leaders.

Nirmal Baba: Exploiting people’s superstitions, Nirmal Baba charges exorbitant fees for entry to his ‘darbar,’ preying on the emotional distress of his followers.

Political Patronage and Exploitation

Political patronage plays a significant role in the unchecked rise of these godmen. Politicians often seek the support of these influential figures to mobilize large voter bases, providing them with protection and legitimacy. This symbiotic relationship enables godmen to operate with impunity, running their ashrams and organizations as virtual parallel states. The support from political leaders often emboldens these godmen,

making them feel invincible and above the law.

The deep dissatisfaction and blind faith, however, turn truly noxious when politics gets mixed into it. Godmen wooing gullible individuals would not be a problem if politicians did not use them to influence voters. That politicians vied with each other to get the favor of dubious Baba Ram Rahim during elections is too well known. This political patronage at times allows some better-organized godmen to run parallel states, with their armies and untrammeled power. They start thinking that they are invincible, indomitable, and above the law.

The Need for Oversight and Regulation

As regulation by the government may not be feasible and is likely to be opposed, society must evolve some credible mechanism (an agency consisting of independent learned scholars and retired judges, etc.) to monitor the functioning of the organizations/ashrams headed by babas so that any nefarious/antisocial or dubious activities may be curbed before they assume menacing proportions. India badly needs some kind of cleaning of the weird world of ‘babalok/babadom.’ The scope for

taxing the income, other than that used for genuine charitable or public welfare purposes of such organizations (which virtually run businesses), needs to be explored. Further, all such organizations should be required to register themselves with the societyevolved overseeing authority. The public should also be educated by NGOs, police, and the overseeing agency so that they do not easily fall prey to the evil designs of the babas.

India’s journey towards cleaning the realm of ‘babalok’ is essential for preserving the sanctity of its spiritual heritage and protecting the innocent from exploitation. Only through collective societal efforts and stringent legal measures can the menace of fake godmen be effectively addressed.

Conclusion

India’s struggle to eliminate fraudulent godmen is crucial for preserving its spiritual integrity. By addressing the root causes of this phenomenon and implementing necessary reforms, the nation can protect its citizens from exploitation and uphold the true values of spirituality and justice. The Hathras incident, alongside the crimes of these godmen, highlights the urgent need for societal and systemic change to protect the vulnerable and ensure justice for all.

Knowing when: 6 clear signals to see your doctor

You’ve been feeling well lately, and a visit to the doctor is the furthest thing from your mind. But then, out of nowhere, you notice some strange new symptoms.

While some issues may pass with time, others warrant a conversation with your doctor. “Don’t hesitate to bring things up with your doctor, even if you think it’s not a big deal,” said Dr. Jane Smith, a family medicine physician. “Issues that seem insignificant could be a symptom of something we can address and improve your health.”

Here are some key signs it’s time to schedule a visit with your doctor:

1. Shortness of Breath

Feeling like you can’t catch your breath can be unsettling. Healthy people may experience shortness of breath due to high altitude, strenuous workouts, air pollution, or extreme temperatures. However, if it occurs unexpectedly during routine activities or doesn’t align with your current fitness level, it’s a signal to see a doctor. If shortness of breath is accompanied by chest pain or pressure, nausea, or weakness, seek emergency medical attention immediately.

2. Persistent Depression

Sadness is a natural emotion that everyone experiences. However, if you’ve been feeling persistently sad for weeks or months, it’s time to consult your doctor. Depression can manifest as anxiety, restlessness, fatigue, and an overwhelming sense of emptiness. It can occur without an obvious reason or be triggered by life events like the loss of a loved one or job. Symptoms include a loss of interest in activities, feelings of hopelessness, and changes in sleep patterns. Early intervention is crucial for managing depression effectively.

3. Unintentional Weight Loss

In a world where many strive to lose

weight, shedding pounds without effort might seem like a blessing. However, unexplained weight loss can indicate underlying health issues, ranging from depression to gastrointestinal problems. If you notice significant weight loss without changes to your diet or exercise routine, it’s important to consult your doctor to rule out any serious conditions.

4. Changes in Bathroom Habits

Significant changes in urination and bowel movements lasting more than two weeks can signal health problems. If you notice blood in your urine or stool, experience abdominal pain during elimination, or observe consistently pencilthin or watery stools, it’s time to see your doctor. These symptoms could indicate a variety of issues that need medical evaluation.

5. Severe Headaches

Headaches are common and often manageable with over-the-counter medication. However, certain types of headaches require medical attention. If you experience a sudden, severe headache, the worst headache of your life, or headaches accompanied by pain in your eye or ear, fever, convulsions, or incapacitation, seek medical care promptly. These could be signs of a more serious condition.

6. Insomnia

Occasional sleepless nights happen to everyone. But if insomnia persists for more than three weeks, it’s time to talk to your doctor. Insomnia can be caused by various factors,

including poor sleep routines, pain, medication side the day, it’s worth discussing with your

Intermittent fasting (IF) has gained significant popularity in recent years, not just as a trendy diet, but as a lifestyle choice with profound health benefits. This dietary regimen cycles between periods of eating and fasting, promoting metabolic efficiency and overall well-being. Understanding the benefits of intermittent fasting and implementing it effectively can lead to transformative changes in one’s health.

One of the primary benefits of intermittent fasting is its ability to promote weight loss and fat loss while preserving lean muscle mass. By restricting the window of eating, typically to 8 hours or less each day, intermittent fasting helps control calorie intake naturally. This approach not only reduces overall calorie consumption but also enhances metabolic rate, encouraging the body to burn fat more effectively during fasting periods.

Moreover, intermittent fasting has been shown to improve insulin sensitivity and regulate blood sugar levels. By giving the body extended periods without food, insulin levels decrease, which helps cells become more responsive to insulin. This can lower the risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases over time.

Beyond the metabolic advantages, intermittent fasting also supports cellular repair processes, a phenomenon known as autophagy. During fasting periods, cells initiate autophagy to remove damaged components and regenerate new ones. This cellular rejuvenation may contribute to a longer lifespan and reduced risk of chronic diseases associated with aging.

Cognitive function and mental clarity can also benefit from intermittent fasting. Studies suggest that fasting may enhance brain function, improve focus, and protect against neurodegenerative conditions like Alzheimer’s disease. This mental resilience is further supported by reduced inflammation throughout the body, a common benefit reported by many intermittent fasters. Implementing intermittent fasting successfully involves careful planning and adherence to healthy eating habits during eating windows. Here are some practical tips to get started.

1. Choose the Right Protocol: Experiment with different fasting schedules such as the 16/8 method (16 hours fasting, 8 hours eating) or the 5:2 method (eating normally for 5 days and severely restricting calories for 2 non-consecutive days).

2. Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water during fasting periods to stay hydrated and support detoxification processes.

3. Focus on Nutrient-Dense Foods: Make every meal count by prioritizing whole foods like lean proteins, fruits, vegetables, and healthy fats to meet nutritional needs.

4. Listen to Your Body: Pay attention to hunger cues and adjust fasting periods accordingly. It’s essential to strike a balance between discipline and flexibility.

5. Combine with Exercise: Incorporate regular physical activity to maximize the benefits of intermittent fasting, promoting muscle growth and overall fitness.

Intermittent fasting offers a holistic approach to health by optimizing metabolism, enhancing cognitive function, and promoting longevity. By integrating intermittent fasting into a balanced lifestyle with nutritious food choices and regular exercise, individuals can unlock their full potential for improved wellbeing and vitality.
