Issues with China and Pakistan need to be resolved, says Jaishankar after assuming office
Friday, 14 June 2024
External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar on Tuesday said that China and Pakistan are two distinct countries and India is committed to resolve the issues with both countries.
“Pakistan and China are different countries with distinct relationships and issues. Our focus regarding China will be on finding a solution for the border issues.”
EAM Jaishankar said after assuming office at the Ministry of External Affairs for the second time. On Pakistan, the EAM said that there is a need to resolve the persistent issue of cross-border terrorism.
“Cross-border terror is not a policy of good neighbors. With Pakistan, we aim to resolve this issue,” the EAM said. On resuming his role for the second time, he said, “I am fully confident that under PM Modi’s leadership, the foreign policy of Modi 3.0 will be very successful.”
EAM Jaishankar emphasized India’s commitment to presenting its views confidently on the global stage and contributing proactively to international affairs. Highlighting India’s growing influence on the global stage, EAM Jaishankar said, “For us, the influence of India has been steadily growing, not just in terms of our perception but also in terms of what other countries think. They feel that India is truly their friend, and they have seen that in times of crisis, if there is one country that stands with the Global South, it is India.”
He pointed to India’s successful advocacy for the African Union’s membership during its G20 presidency as a testament to the world’s trust in India.
“The world trusted us and our responsibilities are also increasing. Under the leadership of PM Modi, India’s identity in the world will continue to grow,” the EAM added.
Modi 3.0 lays out 100-day agenda, combating corruption and cyber fraud among top priorities
In keeping with its zero-tolerance policy against corruption, the Modi government, in its third term, has planned an intensive campaign to crack down on all kinds of graft including that in digital space.
On the lines of the 100-day agenda of Modi 3.0, the NDA government has planned a special campaign for clamping down on corruption and cyber frauds. The special campaign is expected to be implemented soon.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his first speech after the 2024 election results, made it amply clear that his third term will see exemplary and vigorous action on all modes of corruption.
Promotion of violence never acceptable, says Canadian envoy on pro-Khalistani elements
As pro-Khalistani elements continue to spread anti-India feelings through their extremist statements and activities in Canada, the country’s High Commissioner in India Cameron MacKay stated on Tuesday that there is no place for hate or for the glorification of violence in the North American nation.
“The Government of Canada is aware of further imagery displayed in Brampton on Sunday. Canada’s position is clear: The promotion of violence is never acceptable in Canada,” MacKay said on X while replying to a message posted by Canadian minister Dominic LeBlanc on June 8.
Public Safety Minister LeBlanc had expressed concerns over the imagery depicting the assassination of former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in Vancouver.
“This week, there were reports of imagery depicting the assassination of Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in Vancouver. The promotion of violence is never acceptable in Canada,” wrote the Canadian Minister.
MacKay on June 8 had said that he was “appalled” by reports of an event in Canada that celebrated the assassination of the late PM Indira Gandhi.
US, Ukraine sign long-term security agreement at G7
The Presidents of the US and Ukraine have signed an agreement laying out Washington’s long-term security relationship with Kiev on the sidelines of the G7 in southern Italy on Thursday.
US President Joe Biden and Ukrainian President Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky signed the bilateral deal that comes after 15 countries concluded similar long-term security agreements with Kiev including Britain, France and Germany.
Biden’s National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said on Wednesday that the agreement would not include the obligation for Washington to deploy US troops to Ukraine, nor would it contain commitments to supply specific weapon systems.
The agreement broadly regulates cooperation between the two countries at all possible levels, including with regard to military equipment, training and maneuvers.

Hamas’ requested changes on truce deal partially ‘workable’, says Blinken
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has said that some of the changes requested by Hamas regarding the latest ceasefire proposal are “workable,” while some are not. Hamas had not explicitly agreed to the proposal, and “we are determined to try to bridge the gaps,” Blinken said on Wednesday in a press conference after meeting with Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, Xinhua news agency reported.
During the meeting, the two sides discussed Hamas’ response to the latest truce deal, the latest developments in Gaza, and the latest updates in the joint mediation efforts to end the war, according to a statement by the Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Qatar and Egypt announced on Tuesday that they have received a response from Hamas regarding the ceasefire proposal.
The mediators “will examine the response and coordinate with the parties concerned regarding the next steps,” according to a previous statement by the Ministry on Tuesday.

“There is no place in Canada for hate or for the glorification of violence. I categorically condemn these activities,” he posted on X.
The Indian government has repeatedly expressed its deep concern and strong protest at the disturbing actions being allowed to continue unchecked at such events in Canada, saying that it illustrates the political space that has been given in Canada to separatism, extremism and violence.
Last month, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar targeted the Justin Trudeau government for giving refuge to proKhalistani elements, asserting that further deterioration in bilateral ties would eventually result in a big loss for Canada.
“Freedom of speech cannot be freedom to advocate violence, freedom of speech cannot be freedom to support separatism and terrorism in a foreign country. It cannot be... A group of Khalistanis have been misusing Canada’s freedom
laws for years. But when the Canadian government has any political compulsions, they accommodate these people who are also their vote bank,” said Jaishankar while speaking at the ‘Vishwabandhu Bharat’ interaction in Nashik, Maharashtra.
As pro-Khalistani elements continue to indulge in anti-India activities, New Delhi has conveyed to Ottawa on several occasions that democratic countries which respect the rule of law should not allow intimidation by radical elements in the name of freedom of expression.
“Our relations have been spoiled today because of the activities of these people who are even threatening our Ambassador and various diplomats posted in the country. They threw smoke bombs inside the High Commission and, at one time, our diplomats were facing great difficulty in getting out of the building. People who supported terror activities against India have been given refuge in Canada. The government there should have a relook at the entire situation,” asserted Jaishankar.

As part of the special campaign, dedicated teams will be formed to redress grievances of consumers related to cyber frauds of various kinds, including those linked with credit cards. Complaints related to non-grant of family pension to relatives of (deceased) government servants will also be taken up during the 100-day campaign. Besides the steps to eradicate corruption and cyber fraudsters, the government has planned to make the grievance redressing mechanism smoother and people-friendly to ensure its wider and deeper reach within the public.
Popular social media tools like WhatsApp and AI chatbots are likely to be roped in. Citizens can lodge their complaints and grievances on WhatsApp. A mobile application is also being planned to facilitate lodging of complaints and grievances by citizens.
The harnessing of technology in the crackdown on cyber fraud and corruption cases is expected to give a major fillip to the drive. According to official data, the grievance redressing mechanism has seen a remarkable improvement in the past few years.
In 2019, the average closing time of public grievances lodged on the central portal stood at around 28 days. It has been brought down to 10 days in 2024. Also, the number of complaints by citizens on the official portal saw a noticeable jump from 19 lakh in 2022 to 21 lakh in 2023.

At the same time, Ukraine is called upon to implement various reforms in the areas of justice, law enforcement and fighting corruption, but also in military capabilities and structures to achieve NATO standards in the future.
As expected, the agreement does not contain any commitments to deploy American armed forces for the defense of Ukraine. Biden has always categorically ruled this out - despite recent appeals from French President Emmanuel Macron to send military trainers there.
Washington says the aim is rather to enable Ukraine to continue to defend itself. The agreement also makes no promises to supply specific weapons systems.
The US government interpreted the agreement with Kiev as a message to Moscow, notably that it is committed to continued and longer-term support for Ukraine.

India brings back mortal remains of 45 killed in Kuwait fire by special flight
Aspecial Air Force aircraft carrying the mortal remains of 45 Indians, who died in a devastating fire in Kuwait on June 12, landed in Kochi on Friday morning.
According to a statement, most of the deceased are from Kerala (23), followed by seven from Tamil Nadu, three each from Andhra Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, two from Odisha, and one each from Bihar, Punjab, Karnataka, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Jharkhand, and Haryana.
Minister of State for External Affairs, Kirti Vardhan Singh, acting on the directions of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, reached Kuwait on Thursday forenoon to coordinate with the Kuwaiti government for the early repatriation of the mortal remains of the deceased as well as to ensure the well-being of those injured in the tragic fire incident at a labor housing facility in the Mangaf area on Wednesday, the statement said.
Out of the 176 Indian workers in the housing facility, 45 have died, while 33 are hospitalized and the rest are reportedly safe.
Immediately upon his arrival, the Minister visited five hospitals (Adan, Mubarak AlKabeer, Jaber, Farwaniya and Jahra), where the injured Indians are being treated, and interacted with them. According to hospital
Pak PM sends ‘felicitations’ to Prime Minister Modi; Nawaz Sharif says let’s replace hate with hope
By: Hamza Ameer
Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday sent “felicitations” to Narendra Modi on taking oath as the Prime Minister of India for the third consecutive time.
In a short message on X, Shehbaz wrote, “Felicitations to Narendra Modi on taking oath as Prime Minister of India.”
Prime Minister Modi and his Council of Ministers took oath in a historic ceremony held at the Rashtrapati Bhawan in Delhi on Sunday.
While dozens of global leaders have sent congratulatory messages, Pakistan PM’s message to his Indian counterpart holds quite a significance considering the tense relationship between the neighboring nations during the past two terms of the Modi government.
“PM Shehbaz’s felicitation message shows clearly the rift that persists between the two countries. The message didn’t show any sign of warmth or express hopes of working towards normalization of relations between the two countries. Instead, it seemed more like a forced formality that the premier had to undertake,” said senior political analyst Javed Siddique.
It should also be noted that PM Modi did not extend an invitation to Pakistan to participate in the swearing-in ceremony like he did in 2014 when then Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was invited.
Interestingly, a vast difference is also seen in the messages sent to PM Modi on Monday by PM Shehbaz Sharif and by his elder brother Nawaz Sharif, the President of the country’s
ruling party, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).
In his message to the Indian PM, Nawaz Sharif congratulated him on assuming office for the third consecutive time and expressed hope of “replacing hate with hope” for better future progress of the two nations.
“My warm felicitations to Modi Ji on assuming office for the third time. Your party’s success in recent elections reflects the confidence of the people in your leadership. Let us replace hate with hope and seize the opportunity to shape the destiny of the two billion people of South Asia,” he posted on X.
While PM Shehbaz enjoys a close relationship with the country’s powerful establishment currently running a coalition government, his elder brother is seen as a leader who refuses to fall in line with the country’s military.
Having failed to secure a majority to form the government after the general polls held in February this year, Nawaz Sharif is managing party politics through his daughter and Chief Minister of Punjab province, Maryam Nawaz Sharif.
PM Modi’s close relations with Nawaz Sharif also became evident when he made a surprise visit to Lahore in 2015 on the latter’s invitation and even spent time at Sharif’s Jati Umra residence.
Analysts feel that considering the stance taken by the BJP-led NDA during campaigning over the past few weeks, it is unlikely that the relationship between the two countries will improve during the third term of the Modi government.
authorities, all the patients are reportedly safe and will be discharged progressively depending on their medical condition.
Kirti Vardhan Singh also called on First Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Defence & Interior, Sheikh Fahad Yousef Saud AI-Sabah, who conveyed the condolences on behalf of Kuwait’s
ruler, Sheikh Meshal AI-Ahmad Al-Jaber AI-Sabah, and assured full support and assistance for early repatriation of mortal remains of the deceased and proper medical care and attention to all those who are hospitalized.
The Minister also called on the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Abdullah Ali AI-Yahya, and Health Minister, Ahmad Abdelwahab Ahmad Al-Awadi, and both assured full support of the Kuwaiti government.
The Embassy, expressing its deepest condolences to the bereaved families, said t hat it has been in constant touch with the local authorities, ensuring all necessary assistance to those injured and those who have been safely evacuated from the accident site.
It said it has been operating a dedicated 24x7 helpline +965-65505246 (Whatsapp and regular call) for the family members of the deceased as well as those injured. Regular updates are being provided through the helpline.
Biden calls France ‘our first friend’ as host Macron says, ‘Allied we are and allied we will stay’
President Joe Biden said France was America’s “first friend” at its founding and is one of its closest allies more than two centuries later as he was honored with a state visit last week by French President Emmanuel Macron aimed at showing off their partnership on global security issues and easing past trade tensions.
“United we stand, divided we fall,” Macron said in toasting Biden at a state dinner. “Allied we are and allied we will stay.”
Biden and Macron attended ceremonies marking the 80th anniversary of D-Day on Thursday last week and met separately the following day with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Paris. The leaders both used those engagements
to underscore the urgent need to support Kyiv’s fight against Russia’s invasion. But Macron and Biden have often chafed at the pace of support for Ukraine, especially as the United States, by far the largest contributor to Kyiv’s defense, was forced to pause aid shipments for months while congressional Republicans held up an assistance package.
The state visit began Saturday with a ceremony at the Arc de Triomphe, including a wreath-laying at France’s tomb of the unknown soldier, and a military parade along the Champs-Élysées leading to the Élysée Palace, where the two held official meetings and delivered public statements. Macron and his wife, Brigitte Macron, hosted state dinner at the palace for Biden and his wife, Jill.

Navigating India’s Foreign Policy in Modi 3.0
Dr. (H) Avi Verma Publisher
By Dr. Avi Verma Publisher
As Narendra Modi embarks on his third term as Prime Minister, India’s foreign policy is poised for significant evolution, reflecting the aspirations of a nation on the cusp of becoming a global leader. Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), supported by its National Democratic Alliance (NDA) coalition, secured a majority, underscoring the Indian electorate’s confidence in his governance. Modi has pledged a ‘new chapter of big decisions,’ aiming to propel India towards becoming the world’s thirdlargest economy by 2027, among other ambitious goals. A critical aspect of this journey will be navigating the complex and multifaceted relationships with major global powers such as China, Pakistan, the United States, the Middle East, and the Ukraine-Russia conflict.
Indo-China Relations
India’s relationship with China will be a focal point in Modi’s third term, characterized by strategic recalibration and enhanced defense preparedness. The ongoing tensions along the Himalayan border necessitate a robust response, including significant investments in border infrastructure and military readiness. The deployment of Chinese advanced military assets close to Indian territories requires a vigilant and proactive stance.
Expect India to continue deepening its alliances through minilateral arrangements like the Quad, comprising the United States, Japan, and Australia, to counterbalance China’s influence in the Indo-Pacific. Economically, India will aim to reduce dependency on Chinese imports by bolstering its “Make in India” initiative and diversifying supply chains. Diplomatic channels will remain open, with efforts to de-escalate tensions through dialogue while firmly asserting India’s territorial integrity.
Indo-Pak Relations
Indo-Pak relations remain one of the most challenging aspects of India’s foreign policy, primarily due to the persistent issue of cross-border terrorism and the Kashmir dispute. Modi’s administration will maintain a zero-tolerance policy towards terrorism, ensuring national security is paramount. Diplomatic efforts will focus on isolating Pakistan globally while seeking to counter its influence through
regional security collaborations, such as the Colombo Security Conclave.
Significant breakthroughs in bilateral relations are unlikely, given the internal political dynamics in Pakistan, dominated by military influence. Nonetheless, Modi’s government will continue to advocate for peace and stability in the region while being prepared for any security contingencies.
Indo-US Relations
The strategic partnership between India and the United States is set to deepen further, building on the strong foundation laid in previous years. Modi’s third term will see enhanced cooperation across multiple domains, including defense, technology, trade, and peopleto-people ties. The Initiative on Critical and Emerging Technology exemplifies the forward-looking approach in bilateral relations.
Defense collaboration will intensify, with more joint military exercises and technology transfers. The space sector, digital infrastructure, and energy transition will be key focus areas, aligning with the strategic interests of both nations. Economically, efforts will be made to finalize a comprehensive trade agreement, boosting bilateral investment and trade.
Strategically, the US-India partnership will play a pivotal role in regional security, particularly in the Indo-Pacific, to counterbalance China’s influence.
The partnership’s growth reflects India’s broader goal of cementing its status as a global leader and a key player in world politics.
Indo-Middle East Relations
India’s relationship with the Middle East is crucial, given the region’s importance for energy security, trade, and the large Indian diaspora. Modi’s third term will focus on deepening ties with key Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, enhancing cooperation in energy, infrastructure, and technology sectors.
Expect increased investments from
the Middle East in India’s infrastructure projects, bolstering economic ties. Additionally, India will seek to play a more prominent role in regional security and counterterrorism efforts, working closely with Middle Eastern nations to ensure stability and peace in the region. Strengthening cultural and people-topeople exchanges will also be a priority, further solidifying the robust ties between India and the Middle East.
Ukraine-Russia Conflict
The Ukraine-Russia conflict presents a complex challenge for India, balancing its longstanding relationship with Russia and its strategic ties with Western nations. Modi’s government will continue to navigate this delicate situation with a pragmatic approach, emphasizing dialogue and diplomacy to resolve the conflict.
India will maintain its defense and trade ties with Russia, recognizing Moscow’s role in India’s strategic calculus. However, Delhi will also advocate for a peaceful resolution to the conflict, urging respect for international law and sovereignty. India’s position will likely involve supporting humanitarian efforts and promoting diplomatic initiatives to de-escalate tensions, reflecting its commitment to global peace and stability.
To conclude, it would be fair to say that Modi’s third term is poised to drive comprehensive foreign policy reforms, strengthen strategic alliances, and solidify India’s leadership role on the global stage. By enhancing regional security, pursuing permanent membership in the United Nations Security Council, and fostering global partnerships, India aims to emerge as a pivotal player in world affairs. The vision of a ‘Developed India’ by 2047, propelled by market reforms, economic resilience, and strategic diplomacy, will guide the nation’s journey in the coming years.

Baltimore shipping channel reopens after deadly bridge collapse in March
U.S. authorities have completely reopened the primary shipping route to the Port of Baltimore following an extensive cleanup endeavor, a few months after the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, which killed six workers. In a news release on Monday evening, officials said the reopening follows a significant cleanup operation, where crews extracted approximately 50,000 tons of steel and concrete from the Patapsco River, reports Xinhua news agency.
On March 26, a container ship collided with one of the bridge’s support columns, causing six road workers who were on their overnight shift to fill potholes on the bridge to fall to their deaths. The cargo ship that hit and destroyed the bridge in Baltimore, Maryland, had experienced a loss of electrical power and propulsion before the incident, according to a preliminary report released by the US National Transportation Safety Board in May. The US Coast Guard classified the accident as a major marine casualty.
The Port of Baltimore, known for handling the highest volume of cars and agricultural machinery in the nation, remained practically shut down for several weeks during the removal of the wreckage. In recent weeks, crews managed to gradually reopen sections of the deep-draft channel, allowing for the resumption of some commercial traffic.
Former US astronaut William Anders, who was part of the Apollo 8 mission which saw the first crew orbit the moon in 1968, has died in a plane crash north-west of Seattle, US media reported last week citing his son. Anders was 90 years old. He was flying alone in a small aircraft when it went down off the coast of Washington state, according to the reports. Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the crash.
During the Apollo 8 mission, Anders took the famous Earthrise photo which depicts the moon with the Earth “rising” in space in the background. The image has been credited with changing human perception of the planet and became a symbol for Earth’s fragility. Some even consider it to be the origin of today’s environmental movements.
Following his NASA career, Anders served as US presidential adviser and US ambassador. He also worked for different nuclear energy and aviation companies, among others. Most recently, Anders lived on the San Juan Islands off Washington state on the US north-west coast. He was married and had six children.
Clarence Thomas fails to disclose 3 Harlan Crow trips, Senate records show
IndoUS Tribune Newsdesk
Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas failed to disclose three trips that were paid for by GOP mega-donor Harlan Crow, according to information obtained by the Senate Judiciary Committee and released Thursday.
According to the panel, Thomas did not disclose information on three trips he took on private jets funded by Crow: a trip from St. Louis to Montana and back to Dallas in 2017; round-trip travel from Washington to Savannah, Ga., in 2019; and round-trip travel from Washington to San Jose in 2021.
The information was obtained through documents and information that Crow delivered to the committee dating back seven years. Also included in the trove of Crow’s documents was information about the 2019 trips to Indonesia and California, which included private jet travel for both and an eight-day yacht excursion in Bali. The committee noted that a recent report totaled the gifts Thomas has received at nearly $4.2 million, far exceeding the totals of other justices.
“Nearly $4.2 million in gifts and even that wasn’t enough for Justice Thomas, with at least three additional trips the Committee found that he has failed to disclose to date,” Senate Judiciary Chair Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) said in a statement.
“The Senate Judiciary Committee’s ongoing investigation into the Supreme Court’s ethical crisis is producing new information — like what we’ve revealed today — and makes it crystal clear that the highest court needs an enforceable code of conduct, because its members continue to choose not to meet the moment.”
California State University moves classes online after demonstrations over conflict in Gaza
California State University, Los Angeles (Cal State LA) has announced that all classes and operations on the university’s main campus will be held remotely until further notice after a night of demonstrations over the ongoing IsraelHamas conflict in Gaza.
“Please do not come to the main campus,” the Los Angeles school noted on Thursday in a protest action alert on its website. A group of pro-Palestinian protesters took over the university’s student services building, which includes the office of the university’s president, on Wednesday afternoon. Some school administrators were reportedly trapped inside the building after the university urged employees to shelter in place, Xinhua news agency reported.
Social media posts showed protesters fortifying their barricades outside the building at night as they waited for President of Cal State LA Berenecea Johnson Eanes to negotiate with them.
By Thursday morning, the group had dispersed from the building, but they left behind significant damage outside and inside the building, reported local KABC television station, adding that proPalestinian graffiti covered many windows on the ground floor, and video from inside showed shattered windows, more graffiti
and debris scattered throughout.
The protest came two days after 25 pro-Palestinian protesters were arrested Monday by police at the University of California, Los Angeles. Students set up a “Gaza Solidarity Encampment” at Cal State LA on May 1, calling for the university and its partners to divest from doing business with Israel.
With 23 campuses enrolling almost 458,000 students and 53,000 faculty and staff, California State University is the largest public university system in the United States. It is one of three public higher education systems in California, which also includes the University of California and the California Community Colleges, according to the university’s website.
Thomas, through an attorney, pushed back on the allegations. Elliot S. Berke, an attorney for Thomas, said the information disclosed by Crow fell under the “personal hospitality exemption” and was not required to be disclosed.
U.S. journalist Evan Gershkovich to stand trial in Russia on charges of spying for the CIA
American journalist Evan Gershkovich will stand trial in Russia on charges of spying for the CIA, prosecutors announced Thursday. Gershkovich, a Wall Street Journal reporter, was arrested in March 2023 on what many in the West consider trumped-up charges by Russian President Vladimir Putin’s repressive government. After more than a year in pretrial detention, the Russian Prosecutor General’s Office said Thursday that Gershkovich’s case would be sent to the Sverdlovsk Regional Court, in the city where he was arrested, for trial at an unspecified date.
The prosecutor’s office said that Gershkovich’s indictment on espionage charges had been finalized following an investigation by Russia’s Federal Security Service, or FSB. It said he had “acted on instructions from the CIA” and “collected secret information” about the manufacturer Uralvagonzavod, a facility in the region that produces and repairs military equipment. It added that “illegal actions were carried out by Gershkovich in compliance with careful measures of secrecy.”
Russian authorities have presented no evidence to support their accusations, which were revealed for the first time in Thursday’s statement. Gershkovich faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted.

US Supreme Court preserves access to abortion pill mifepristone
The Supreme Court on Thursday rejected a challenge targeting the availability of the widely used abortion pill mifepristone, preserving access to the drug in its first major abortion-related ruling since the reversal of Roe v. Wade. The unanimous ruling from the justices was on procedural grounds. They determined that a group of anti-abortion rights doctors and medical associations who brought the lawsuit against the Food and Drug Administration did not have the legal right to do so. In finding they lacked legal standing, the Supreme Court did not address whether the FDA acted lawfully when it took a series of steps in 2016 and 2021 that relaxed the rules for mifepristone’s use.
“Under Article III of the Constitution, a plaintiff’s desire to make a drug less available for others does not establish standing to sue. Nor do the plaintiffs’ other standing theories suffice,” Justice Brett Kavanaugh wrote for the court. “Therefore, the plaintiffs lack standing to challenge FDA’s actions.” The decision does not foreclose other challenges targeting mifepristone, but it means that the FDA’s recent steps that made the drug easier to obtain will remain in place. Those actions included allowing mifepristone to be taken later into a pregnancy, expanding the health care workers who can prescribe it and lifting an in-person dispensing requirement so the pill can be sent through the mail.
Milwaukee mayor hits Trump over ‘horrible’ city comment
Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson fiercely defended his home turf after reports surfaced that former President Trump called it a “horrible city” in a meeting with congressional Republicans on Capitol Hill on Thursday.
“If Donald Trump wants to talk about things that he thinks are horrible — all of us lived through his presidency, so, right back at you, buddy,” Johnson said when asked about Trump’s alleged criticism of the city, which is hosting the Republican National Convention this summer, where Trump is set to clinch the 2024 presidential nomination.
“Look, obviously Donald Trump is wrong about something yet again,” Johnson added.
Johnson noted the political dynamics at play in Wisconsin — one of six battleground states largely seen as critical to winning the general election, in what’s expected to be a close rematch between Trump and President Biden in November.
Johnson called Trump’s alleged remarks “bizarre” and “unhinged, in a way.”
Justice Department probe
finds
Phoenix
police discriminate against minorities, uses excessive force
The Justice Department on Thursday announced the results of a yearslong investigation that found that the Phoenix Police Department uses excessive force and has engaged in conduct that violates people’s rights and discriminates against Black, Hispanic and Native American people.
The Justice Department found a “pattern or practice” of the violations, saying police frequently stop, detain and arrest homeless people without reasonable suspicion that they’ve committed any crime. The city of Phoenix and its police department seize and destroy the property of homeless people without providing adequate notice or fair opportunity to collect their belongings, the Justice Department said. The findings were announced by Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke, who oversees the Justice Department’s civil rights division.
“This finding is historic,” Clarke said. “This marks the first time that the Justice Department has found violations of the civil and constitutional rights of people who are homeless.”
The agency also said the police department has a pattern of treating minorities differently by discriminating against Black, Hispanic and Native
American people when enforcing the law. Police are also accused of violating the rights of people engaged in protected speech and expression.
The city and police department also discriminate against people with behavioral health disabilities when dispatching calls for assistance and responding to people in crisis, the Justice Department said.
Clarke said career attorneys in the Civil Rights Division conducted hours of interviews, participated in ride alongs, reviewed thousands of documents and watched hundreds of hours of body-worn camera video to reach the findings.
US President’s son Hunter Biden convicted in firearms case
AUS jury on Tuesday found Hunter Biden, the son of US President Joe Biden, guilty of all three crimes he was charged with in relation to a firearms case. Biden faces a maximum punishment of 25 years but is more likely to get away with much less being a first-time offender.
President Biden can pardon him, but he has said repeatedly that he will not do so if his son is found guilty. In a statement on the jury verdict, Joe Biden said, “As I said last week, I am the President, but I am also a Dad. Jill and I love our son, and we are so proud of the man he is today. So many families who have had loved ones battle addiction understand the feeling of pride in seeing someone you love come out the other side and be so strong and resilient in recovery.
“As I also said last week, I will accept the outcome of this case and will continue to respect the judicial process as Hunter considers an appeal. Jill and I will always be there for Hunter and the rest of our family with our love and support. Nothing will ever change that.”
This is the first time that the child of a sitting US President has been tried on criminal charges and convicted. The Junior Biden also faces a second trial in September for tax evasion.
Hunter Biden was charged with two counts
of filing false information on forms he filled to buy a firearm in 2018. He had lied that he was not using narcotics at the time. The third count refers to possessing a firearm when he was using drugs. He was tried in a federal court in Wilmington, the family’s hometown in Delaware state. The jury took only three hours to reach the verdict after the two sides wrapped up their final arguments on Monday.
US Supreme Court bars ‘Trump too small’ trademark
The U.S. Supreme Court barred on Thursday a federal trademark for the phrase “Trump Too Small” - an irreverent criticism of former President Donald Trump - rejecting a California lawyer’s claim that the trademark denial violated his constitutional free speech rights. The justices unanimously overturned a lower court’s decision that the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office’s rejection of Steve Elster’s application to register the trademark to exclusively use it on T-shirts violated the U.S. Constitution’s First Amendment.
The case centered on a provision in a 1946 federal trademark law that bans the registration of any trademark that uses a living individual’s name without their written consent. At issue was whether free speech protections for criticism of public figures outweigh the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office’s concerns over Trump’s rights, as the lower court found. The justices unanimously agreed that the “names clause” provision at issue is constitutional, but differed in their reasons for reaching that conclusion.
South Florida faces more storms after days of record-breaking rain, flooding
Thunderstorms reemerged over rainsoaked South Florida on Thursday, further inundating the region with floodwaters, forcing road closures and disrupting hundreds of flights as a daylong stretch of severe weather rages on. The storms, which began on Tuesday and are the result of a slow-moving low-pressure system, pummeled South Florida with upwards of 20 inches of rain drenching some areas, according to the National Weather Service. The downpour prompted multiple rescues and urgent warnings of “life-threatening floods” on Wednesday as major travel arteries closed, including a section of Interstate 95; hundreds of flights at several major airports were delayed and canceled.
A tornado with peak winds of 85-95 mph touched down in Hobe Sound, just north of West Palm Beach, and moved 1.7 miles toward Jupiter Island before entering the Atlantic, a survey team with the weather service confirmed. Across Hobe Sound and several nearby coastal communities, the storms toppled power poles, uprooted trees and damaged homes.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency to coordinate and mobilize recovery efforts; the mayors of Fort Lauderdale, Miami and other cities also made emergency declarations. With many roads still under several feet of water, more rain could be dangerous, especially for Collier, Miami-Dade and Broward counties, which includes the cities of Naples, Miami and Fort Lauderdale.

Indian origin man shoots brother dead, injures mother, kills self in New York
An Indian-origin man shot his brother dead, injured his mother, and then killed himself, according to police.
Karamjit Multani, 33, shot his brother Vipanpal, 27, on Sunday in their home in the Richmond Hill neighborhood and went out and turned the gun on himself at a place about two kilometers away, police said.
Police said that when they went to their house after getting a call about a shooting, they found Vipan Pal “unresponsive” with several gunshot wounds, and their 52-year-old mother with an injury to her stomach. Later, Multani was found dead near a street corner with a gunshot wound to his head and a gun nearby, according to police.
The mother, who was not identified by name, was taken to a hospital where she was said to be out of danger. Richmond Hill has a large concentration of Asians, most of them of Indian descent from India or the Caribbean, accounting for 26 per cent of the area’s population.
According to the city, “The southern portion of Richmond Hill is home to several tight-knit communities, such as the Punjabi Sikh”. CBS New York reported that the men’s father, Bhupinder Multani, told the station that he did not know what set off his older son.
Asked by the station’s reporter if the sons had any issues, he said, “Not big problems. Sometimes little disagreements, no problems.”
He said that the family had settled in for
a quiet evening with pizza when Multani opened the door to his brother’s room and shot him without warning. The father said that he ran to the house of a neighbor to seek help. The neighbor told the station that when she entered the house she found Vipanpal wounded and pleading for help.
“He told me, ‘Please, don’t let me die’,” the neighbor said, and died later “in my hands”.
Jaspreet Singh, the brother-in-law of the two men, told the station that Multani “was one of the nicest, coolest guys, always joking around. What could be going on in his mind to explode like that,” he wondered.
The New York Post reported that, according to his family, Multani was the father of three and was financially sound with no known problems. A neighbor, Alvin Debieen, told the New York Daily News that they thought it was firecrackers going off when they heard the sound, but when they heard the police sirens, “we kind of just figured someone was shot”.

Ms Kaur’s father left when she was young. Her challenges multiplied in 2009 when she found herself homeless at the age of 17 and exposed to the dangers of the streets, including gangs. She was completing her A-Levels at the time. In 2010, by the time she finished her school, her father was in prison. Next, she made her way to Greenford, West London, seeking refuge in the supportive Sikh community. Despite these obstacles, Ms Kaur’s determination never wavered. She pursued a law degree and proudly graduated in 2013. She then completed her Bar studies. In 2019, her efforts paid off and she was called to the Bar. Four years later, in 2023, she secured Pupilage at the age of 32.
Throughout her journey, Ms Kaur was committed to serving others,
which became evident as she dedicated her free time to offering legal help to underserved communities. Her passion for justice and human rights is evident in her multifaceted roles as a Pupil Barrister and a Sikh and human rights activist.
She is also a co-founder of Sikh Lawyers Association, an organization
rooted in the Sikh principle of ‘Sewa,’ or selfless service, aimed at giving back to the community and fostering social responsibility. Additionally, she also serves as the Director of Kaurs Legal UK, where she leads a legal consultancy, specializing in advising and drafting services across different legal domains, offering support to clients in need of legal help.
Punjab man shot dead in Canada, cops suspect targeted killing
An Indian-origin man from Punjab’s Ludhiana was shot dead in Canada’s Surrey on Friday last week. The victim, Yuvraj Goyal, arrived in Canada in 2019 on a student visa and had recently received his Canadian Permanent Resident (PR) status.
Yuvraj, 28, worked as a sales executive. His father, Rajesh Goyal, operates a firewood business, while his mother, Shakun Goyal, is a homemaker. Yuvraj was known to have no criminal record, and the motive for his murder remains under investigation, the Royal Canadian Police said.
The incident took place on June 7 at 8:46 am, when the Surrey Police received a call reporting a shooting in the 900-block of 164 Street in Surrey, British Columbia. Upon arrival, officers found Yuvraj dead. The police have taken four suspects under custody. The suspects, Manvir Basram (23), Sahib Basra (20), and Harkirat Jhutty (23) of Surrey, and Keilon Francois (20) of Ontario, were charged with first-degree murder on Saturday.
“We are thankful for the hard work of the Surrey RCMP, Air 1, and Lower Mainland Integrated Emergency Response Team (IERT), but there is still more work to be done. Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) investigators remain dedicated to determining why Mr Goyal was the victim of this homicide,” said Sergeant Timothy Pierotti
Preliminary investigation into the case suggests that the shooting was targeted, although the reasons behind Yuvraj’s killing are still being explored, he added.
Lawmakers can speak Punjabi in Pakistan’s Punjab Assembly
Lawmakers in Pakistan’s Punjab Assembly will now be able to speak in at least four indigenous languages, including Punjabi, in the House apart from English and Urdu after an amendment was made.
A special committee of the Punjab Assembly, led by Speaker Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan, approved on Thursday amendments allowing lawmakers to address the House in Punjabi, Saraiki, Potohari and Mewati in addition to English and Urdu, The Express Tribune newspaper reported. Previously, a member needed permission from the Speaker to use any language other than English and Urdu, which was not always granted.
The amendment to the rules aimed to enhance accessibility for constituents who speak these languages, fostering a more representative and responsive legislative body, while the change reflects the multilingual nature of the province, enabling legislators to communicate and fully participate in legislative discussions effectively.

NEET (UG) paper leak: SC issues notice on NTA’s plea seeking transfer of pending petition from Delhi HC
The Supreme Court on Friday issued notice on a plea filed by the National Testing Agency (NTA) seeking the transfer of a petition pending before the Delhi Court pertaining to an alleged NEET (UG) paper leak to the apex court.
Agreeing to examine NTA’s transfer plea, a vacation bench of the apex court presided over by Justice Vikram Nath sought the response of the candidate who had instituted a writ petition before the Delhi HC alleging a paper leak and posted it for hearing on July 8.
The Bench, also comprising Justice Sandeep Mehta, allowed the withdrawal of other transfer petitions filed by NTA seeking transfer of writ petitions pending before various high courts pertaining to the award of compensatory marks in view of its earlier order passed on Thursday.
In an order passed on June 13, the
Ajit Doval gets third term as National Security Advisor
Ajit Doval has been reappointed as the National Security Advisor (NSA) for a third term and he will be assigned the rank of a Cabinet Minister, the government said on Thursday.
“His appointment will be co-terminus with the term of Prime Minister or until further orders, whichever is earlier,” said a notification from the Ministry of Personnel and Training. The notification further added that NSA Doval, during the term of his office, will be assigned the rank of Cabinet Minister.

Ajit Doval as NSA and PK Mishra as Principal Secretary, both retired bureaucrats, are set to become the longest-serving advisors to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Supreme Court decided to close the issue relating to the grant of grace marks in the NEET (UG) exam after NTA submitted the scorecards of 1,563 candidates, who were awarded compensatory marks on account of the loss of time, had been withdrawn and canceled. These candidates were given an option to appear in a re-test to be held on June 23 or may appear
in counseling on the basis of actual marks obtained in the exam without normalization.
Before the Delhi High Court, Solicitor General (SG) Tushar Mehta on Wednesday submitted that NTA would file a transfer plea before the Supreme Court to consolidate all related petitions for a unified hearing.
Jarange-Patil ends hunger strike, gives Maharashtra government 30 days to solve Maratha imbroglio
Shivba Sanghatana leader Manoj Jarange-Patil on Thursday called off his indefinite hunger strike on the sixth day after a state government delegation met and cajoled him to give time to resolve the pending Maratha quotas issue.
State Minister Shambhuraj Desai, MP Sandipan Bhumre, MLA Ranajagjitsinh P. Patil and other officials traveled to Antaravali-Sarati village where Jarange-Patil had launched the agitation on June 8. The official team rushed there soon after the Maratha leader issued a stern 24-hour deadline to the government to resolve the Maratha quotas issue failing which he would intensify his agitation from Friday (June 14).
After discussions and a fervent appeal by the delegation, Jarange-Patil agreed to extend his ultimatum by one month - till July 13 –to enable the government to implement the necessary measures for Maratha quotas.
Jarange-Patil reiterated his earlier warning that Marathas would not only contest all the 288 Maharashtra Assembly elections in
As the National Democratic Alliance’s allies aired their grievances over the appointment of Agniveers under the Agnipath scheme, the Centre has expressed its willingness to address the “lacunae” and also promised to make amends in the short-term recruitment to the Armed Forces.

The group of secretaries is expected to give

After the assurances, Jarange-Patil accepted a glass of orange juice from the delegation members, symbolizing the end of his fifth hunger strike in the past 11 months. Shortly after that, Jarange-Patil was driven off to the Galaxy Hospital in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (Aurangabad) for treatment as he had become weak after abstaining from food for the past 6 days.

Residents hold ‘Matka Phod’ protest over water crisis in Delhi
Amid the ongoing water crisis in the national capital, residents -- particularly women -- staged a ‘Matka Phod’ (break pots) protest to vent their anger and desperation against the city government.
The demonstration was led by newlyelected South Delhi MP Ramvir Singh Bidhuri and former MLA Brahm Singh Tanwar. Blaming the AAP government for the water crisis and chaos in several parts of Delhi, they demanded the resignations of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Water Minister Atishi Marlena.
For days, many parts of Delhi have been struggling with a severe shortage of water, leading to conflicts and quarrels among residents. In some neighborhoods, people could be seen engaging in fracas to fill their water containers. Residents gathered at the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) filling station in Chhattarpur and raised slogans against the DJB and the Chief Minister.
The protest, organized by BJP leaders, began in Chhattarpur and culminated at the water-filling station. A significant number of women participated in it, carrying pots on their heads and breaking them while raising slogans.
Excise policy case: Delhi court to hear CM Kejriwal’s regular bail plea on June 19
ADelhi court on Friday adjourned, to June 19, the hearing of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s regular bail plea in a money laundering case related to the alleged excise policy scam. Special Judge Kaveri Baweja of the Rouse Avenue Court had recently dismissed his interim bail plea, seeking seven days bail on medical grounds.
On Friday, CM Kejriwal’s counsel moved an application asking jail authorities to allow his wife Sunita Kejriwal to join Kejriwal’s medical checkup through video conferencing. Another relief he has sought is that when the board sits, they would also like to give their input.
Now, the court has sought a response from the Tihar Jail Superintendent on the aforementioned application. It will be heard on Saturday. Meanwhile, his regular bail plea has been posted for June 19, when his judicial custody is also ending.
Earlier, while dismissing his interim bail, the court had indicated that directions had been issued for specific diagnostic tests for CM Kejriwal, who appeared via video conference from Tihar Jail.
Amaravati farmers end four-year-long protest as Naidu government sworn-in
With the formation of the Chandrababu Naidu-led government in Andhra Pradesh, farmers of Amaravati on Wednesday called off their four-year-long protest against three capitals move of the previous YSR Congress government.
Hours after Naidu and his Council of Ministers took oath at a ceremony at Vijayawada, the farmers removed their protest camps in villages. The farmers, including women, had been protesting for 1,631 days, demanding the YSR Congress government to develop Amaravati as the sole capital.
The protest started in December 2019 after Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy announced that his government would develop three state capitals, reversing the decision of the previous TDP government to develop Amaravati as the only state capital.
The Jagan Mohan Reddy government planned to develop Visakhapatnam as the administrative capital, Kurnool as the judicial capital, and keep Amaravati only as a legislative capital. The farmers of 29 villages, who had given 33,000 acres of their land under a land pooling system when the TDP was in power, came out on the streets. They had been continuing the protest in different forms.
The Amaravati Parirakshana Samithi (APS),
which was spearheading the movement against three capitals, undertook two padyatras during the last two years to mobilize public support for their demand. The return of Naidu to power has given new hopes to farmers and others, who were fighting for justice.
The foundation stone for Amaravati was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi
Rahul Gandhi hints at relinquishing Wayanad, BJP hits out at ‘cheating’
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who is in Kerala on Wednesday, admitted that he was in a dilemma as to which Lok Sabha constituency he should relinquish -- Wayanad or Rae Bareli - but then in Wayanad, dropped enough hints that he will be dropping the Kerala seat. State BJP chief K. Surendran, who had contested against Gandhi and finished a distant third, termed Gandhi’s indication ‘cheating’.
“Speculations have started whether it’s Wayanad or Rae Bareli. Everybody knows the answer except me. In politics, all know except the person who has to make the decision. Don’t worry, the people at Rae Bareli and Wayanad will be happy with the decision I will be making,” Rahul said.
He said he is well aware of the issues in Wayanad. “There are issues of man-animal
conflict, night travel, and the health sector. The Congress and I are well aware of all these and I assure you all issues of Wayanad will be addressed,” he added.
Meanwhile, State BJP chief Surendran said that Gandhi’s decision to vacate Wayanad was cheating the people of the constituency. “We had told the voters that he would ditch Wayanad. Earlier he said Wayanad’s people are his family, but now he says it’s Rae Bareli’s people who are his family... before it was Amethi. He did not even have the courtesy to tell the voters of Wayanad before the elections that he would vacate it. Now that a by-election is thrust on the voters of Wayanad, they will give the Congress an apt reply,” he said.
Gandhi retained his Wayanad seat easily but with a reduced margin of 3.64 lakh votes, against 4.37 lakh in 2019.
in October 2015 when TDP was part of the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre. Naidu had got the master plan for Amaravati prepared by Singapore. With nine theme cities and 27 townships, it was planned in an area of 217 square kilometers with the development in three phases – seed area or core capital, capital city, and capital region.

South Korea vows stern response to illegal acts ahead of doctors’ collective action
Any illegal acts related to the collective action by doctors will be dealt with sternly, the South Korean government said on Thursday, as medical professors and community doctors plan to stage walkouts in protest against the medical school quota hike. The Korea Medical Association (KMA), the biggest doctors’ group, plans a one-day general strike on Tuesday, while medical professors at major hospitals have decided to stage indefinite walkouts starting next week, raising concerns about a potential medical crisis. KMA is demanding that the government suspend the proceedings regarding the medical school quota hike for 2025.
“The government will try to persuade doctors until the last moment to prevent their planned collective walkouts. In the meantime, any illegal acts will be met with a stern response,” Lee Han-kyung, the interior ministry’s chief disaster management official, said during a government meeting. The government will also maintain an emergency healthcare system to minimize the impact of a potential medical vacuum, Lee said, urging doctors to refrain from walkouts.
The UN Security Council has adopted a resolution aimed at reaching a comprehensive ceasefire deal in three phases to end the war in Gaza. Adopted by a large majority with 14 votes in favor and Russia abstaining, Resolution 2735 also urges both parties to the conflict to fully implement the terms of the proposal “without delay and without condition” as quoted by Xinhua news agency report on Monday.
According to the resolution, phase one includes an “immediate, full, and complete ceasefire with the release of hostages, including women, the elderly and the wounded, the return of the remains of some hostages who have been killed, and the exchange of Palestinian prisoners”.
It calls for the withdrawal of Israeli forces from “populated areas” of Gaza, the return of Palestinians to their homes and neighborhoods throughout the enclave, including in the north,

India on Thursday sent 19 tons of Humanitarian Assistance & Disaster Relief (HADR) to Papua New Guinea’s Enga province, which was devastated by a landslide that claimed over 2,000 lives.
The landslide, which also caused significant destruction, prompted India to extend its support as a partner under the Forum for India-Pacific Islands Cooperation (FIPIC).
“In the wake of the devastating landslide in Enga Province of Papua New Guinea, India had announced immediate assistance of USD 1 million to our close FIPIC partner,” said Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for the MEA, in a post on X.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced the humanitarian aid on May 28, highlighting India’s solidarity with the

Additionally, the Indian association in the affected country provided support to the landslidehit region by supplying basic medicines, medical aid, and essential clothing.
Benjamin Netanyahu to defend Gaza war in address to US Congress on July 24
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is set to address lawmakers from both chambers of the US Congress in a rare joint meeting on July 24. Netanyahu’s speech, which will defend his war in Gaza, is controversial in Washington, as President Joe Biden struggles to seal a lasting ceasefire deal in Gaza and his Democratic party grows more divided over the conflict.
Even before the date of the speech was announced, several left-wing Democrats had vowed to boycott it over Netanyahu’s handling of his war with Hamas. The invitation to Netanyahu was issued last
week from the leaders of both parties in the US Congress, including Democrat Chuck Schumer, the Senate majority leader who has been highly critical of Netanyahu.
Schumer, who is the highest-ranking Jewish elected official in the US government, recently called for new elections to be held in Israel. Speaker of the House Mike Johnson, a Republican, announced the July 24 date late Thursday.
“We look forward to hearing the Israeli government’s vision for defending democracy, combating terror, and establishing a just and lasting peace in the region,” Johnson wrote on social media.

2019 Easter Sunday bombings: Lanka to probe why prior info from Indian intel was ignored
By Susitha Fernando
Sri Lanka President Ranil Wickremesinghe has appointed a Committee of Inquiry (CoI) to investigate the actions taken by the Lankan intelligence services on the prior information received from their Indian counterparts regarding the 2019 Easter Sunday bombings which killed around 270 people.
President Wicremesinghe’s decision follows the findings of the final report of the Commission of Inquiry dated January 31, 2021, which highlighted that Indian Intelligence agencies and other sources had provided advance warnings about the impending attacks.
“The committee’s mandate includes examining whether adequate actions and measures were taken by the State Intelligence Service (SIS), Chief of National Intelligence (CNI), and other relevant authorities based on the prior intelligence, and evaluating the sufficiency of these measures,” the President’s Media Division (PMD) said in a statement on Wednesday.
Libya-Tunisia border crossing to partially reopen after months of closure
The Ras Ajdir border crossing, a vital land link between Libya and Tunisia, has partially reopened on Thursday following months of closure, the Libyan Interior Ministry said. The reopening decision was made after discussions between the Interior Ministers of both countries in Libya’s capital Tripoli. Full operations at the crossing are scheduled to resume on June 20.
Located 170 km west of Tripoli, the Ras Ajdir crossing was closed on March 19 due to an attack by a “criminal group”. It serves as a key passage for travelers between the two North African nations.
During their meeting, Libyan Interior Minister Emad al-Tarabelsi highlighted ongoing issues affecting passenger movement, including smuggling and problems with travelers having similar names. He noted that both sides are conducting maintenance and upgrades at the border crossing to meet international standards.
President Wickremesinghe has given full powers to the committee headed by retired high court judge A.N.J. De Alwis to question relevant officials and examine important documents to thoroughly investigate these matters.
Additionally, the committee will investigate the circumstances surrounding the Directorate of Military Intelligence’s (DMI) initial belief that the Vavunathivu killing of two police officers on November 30, 2018, was connected to the LTTE.
This belief was held for four months before suspects with alleged links to the National Thowheed Jamath (NTJ) were identified. The committee is expected to submit its report, including findings and recommendations, to the President by September 15, 2024. A series of coordinated bomb attacks on three star hotels in Colombo and three churches carried out by ISIS suicide bombers on Easter Sunday in 2019 resulted in the death of 270 people, including at least 45 foreign nationals, besides injuring over 500 others.
Malawi’s Vice President confirmed dead in plane crash
Malawi’s Vice President Saulos Chilima, along with nine other individuals who were on board a military aircraft, have been confirmed dead after the plane went missing on Monday morning, President Lazarus Chakwera announced on Tuesday.
The wreck of a plane carrying the Vice President has been found with no survivors, President Chakwera said. Chilima, 51, was traveling to a funeral of the country’s former Attorney General and Minister of Justice Ralph Kasambara, who was found dead in a room at a lodge in Lilongwe on Friday.
The plane failed to land at its intended destination at Mzuzu Airport in northern Malawi due to adverse weather conditions, and the pilot was advised to return to Kamuzu
Unicef urges Taliban to let girls study 1,000 days after school ban
Marking 1,000 days since girls in Afghanistan were banned from secondary school, a top official at the United Nations children’s agency, Unicef, on Thursday used this milestone to urge the Taliban to allow girls to go back to school.
“For 1.5 million girls, this systematic exclusion is not only a blatant violation of their right to education but also results in dwindling opportunities and deteriorating mental health,” UNICEF
Executive Director Catherine Russell said in a statement. The statement emphasized the far-reaching consequences of the ban, extending beyond the immediate loss of education.
“It exacerbates the ongoing humanitarian crisis and has serious
ramifications for Afghanistan’s economy and development trajectory,” the statement added. Russell appealed for the return of girls to schools, pointing to the fact that no country can move forward when half its population is left behind.
Since returning to power in August 2021, the Taliban has banned girls and women from studying beyond primary school. However, in some parts of the country, women and girls still attend religious schools, as well as midwifery and nursing schools.
Dozens injured during anti-government demonstration in Armenia
Dozens of people have been injured in clashes between protesters and police during a protest called in Armenia’s capital to demand Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s resignation. The crowd threw stones and bottles at the police, who responded with stun grenades. The Health Ministry said at least 55 people required medical treatment. Police said that nearly 80 people were detained.
The protests, which have been running for weeks, are being led by Bagrat Galstanyan, Archbishop of the Tavush diocese in north-eastern Armenia. Galstanyan has emerged as a vocal opponent of Pashinyan. He has called for protesters to block roads and go on strike as a means of putting so much pressure on the government that it resigns.
Pro-Western Pashinyan has faced huge opposition since Armenia lost total control of the long-disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region to arch-rival Azerbaijan in 2023. More than 100,000 ethnic Armenians had to flee following Azerbaijan’s lightning offensive. Azerbaijan has kept up the pressure on Armenia and is now demanding further concessions. Pashinyan enraged many after indicating a willingness to hand over control of several border villages to the neighboring country in return for a peace treaty.
40 world leaders to attend Ukraine peace summit in Switzerland
Around 40 world leaders have signed up to participate in a Ukraine peace conference to be held on a picturesque Swiss mountain next weekend. The Swiss government, which is organizing the talks at a luxury resort on the Burgenstock, a mountain ridge on Lake Lucerne, said around 160 presidents and prime ministers had been invited in total.
About 40 countries will be represented with lower-level officials, Swiss President Viola Amherd said in Bern on Monday. Representatives of the United Nations and other organizations will also be attending. The neutral Swiss government is billing the summit as a “peace conference.” But no agreement is expected between the warring sides, not least of all because Russia is not taking part. China, along with other countries with close ties to Moscow, are also staying away. The Kremlin has dismissed the meeting as a Western propaganda event. Still, diplomats and the Swiss government believe it could serve as a prelude to further talks that may eventually include Russia. Humanitarian issues, nuclear safety, freedom of navigation and food security would be discussed at a high level at the event.

Waymo recalls software in all its cars after its robotaxi crashes into a pole
Robotaxi company Waymo has voluntarily recalled software in all its 672 self-driving vehicles, according to a safety recall report released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The report said that on May 21, a Waymo vehicle driving in Phoenix, Arizona, hit a utility pole while attempting a low-speed pullover maneuver. There were no passengers in the car or injuries related to the crash, according to the report, only damage to the car.
The report noted that the defective software could potentially pose issues in situations where a “pole-like object” was present but there was no hard road edge between the pole and the drivable surface. Waymo estimated that 100% of its cars had the defect that caused the crash, according to the NHTSA report, which contributed to the decision to recall the software in all its cars. Waymo controls all its cars and said that it has issued updates to address the issue in its entire fleet, according to the report.
Elon Musk congratulates PM Modi, looks forward to invest in India
Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his re-election for a record third term to run the country. In a post on X, the tech billionaire said his companies are looking to invest in the country soon.
“Congratulations @narendramodi on your victory in the world’s largest democratic elections,” Musk wrote.
“Looking forward to my companies doing exciting work in India,” he added.
In April this year, Musk postponed his proposed visit to India due to “very heavy Tesla obligations”. He was expected to visit the country on April 21 and 22 and meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Musk later said he looks forward to coming to India later this year.
“Unfortunately, very heavy Tesla obligations require that the visit to India be delayed, but I do very much look forward to visiting later this year,” Musk posted on X.
Musk met PM Modi in June last year in the US, expressing confidence that Tesla would enter the Indian market soon, along with Starlink. Tesla is likely to set up its manufacturing unit in India and make largescale investments. Last year, Tesla approached the Indian government seeking duty cuts to import its vehicles in the country.
Apple accused in lawsuit of underpaying female workers in California
Apple on Thursday was hit with a proposed class action accusing the tech giant of paying more than 12,000 female employees in California less than men with comparable jobs.
The lawsuit filed in state court in San Francisco by two women who have worked at Apple for more than a decade claims the company systematically underpays female workers in its engineering, marketing, and AppleCare divisions.
necessary, to ensure that we maintain pay equity,” the company said.
California has since 2018 prohibited employers from asking job applicants about their salary history with the goal of eliminating pay gaps based on sex and race.
Apple bases workers’ starting pay on their salaries at previous jobs or on their “pay expectations,” which results in lower pay rates for women, according to the complaint. The lawsuit also claims that Apple’s performance evaluation system, which it uses to set raises and bonuses, is biased against women.
Cupertino, California-based Apple in a statement said it is committed to inclusion and pay equity.
“Since 2017, Apple has achieved and maintained gender pay equity and every year we partner with an independent third-party expert to examine each team member’s total compensation and make adjustments, where
According to Thursday’s lawsuit, Apple instead relies on applicants’ pay expectations to set their salaries. But because most workers provide a figure that is slightly higher than what they earned at their last job, the practice has the same effect of perpetuating wage disparities, the lawsuit says.
Apple also rewards employees who are deemed to have “talent” by paying them more but disproportionately grants that designation to men, the plaintiffs claim. The lawsuit accuses Apple of violating California’s Equal Pay Act, which bars sex discrimination in pay, and state laws prohibiting workplace sex bias and unfair business practices.
One of the plaintiffs, Justina Jong, also claims that Apple refused to transfer her to a different team after she complained about sexual harassment by a coworker. The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages and penalties.
Singapore Airlines compensates passengers after turbulence incident
SAirlines has offered compensation to passengers who suffered injuries during a flight that hit major turbulence last month.
A 73-year-old man died of a suspected heart attack, and more than 50 others were injured in severe turbulence during a Singapore Airlines flight from London to Singapore on May 20.
The Boeing 777-300ER plane carrying 211 passengers and 18 crew members plummeted almost 1,800 meters over the west coast of Myanmar and had to be diverted to Bangkok for an emergency landing.
“Singapore Airlines (SIA) deeply apologizes to all passengers for the traumatic experience on board flight SQ321 on 20 May 2024,” the airline said in a statement published on Facebook on Tuesday.
The airline confirmed that compensation will be offered to passengers.
“For passengers who sustained minor injuries from the incident, we have offered US$10,000 in compensation,” the carrier wrote.
“For those who sustained more serious injuries from the incident, we have invited them to discuss a compensation offer to meet each of their specific circumstances when they feel well and ready to do so.”
The airline will offer an advance payment of $25,000 to passengers who have been medically assessed and determined to have sustained serious injuries requiring long-term medical care and are requesting financial assistance to address their immediate needs.
Additionally, the airline said it offered a full refund of the airfare to all passengers who were on flight SQ321, including those who did not suffer injuries and that all passengers were provided $1,000 to cover their immediate expenses in Bangkok. The airline said it has also covered the medical expenses of injured passengers and arranged for their family members and loved ones to fly to Bangkok upon request.

Canada’s border workers reach tentative deal to avoid strike
The Canadian government and the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) said that they have reached a tentative agreement to avoid potential job action at the country’s borders. The Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat said on Tuesday in a news statement that upon ratification, the renewed collective agreement will apply to nearly 11,000 employees, Xinhua news agency reported.
The renewed Border Services Group collective agreement will include wage enhancements and other benefits for employees, said the statement without sharing details of the agreement.
Should this tentative agreement be ratified by members, the government will have reached an agreement with 18 bargaining units covering more than 84 per cent of the public service, the statement added.
Full details of the tentative agreement will be announced once the ratification kit is available for members on June 13, PSAC said in a statement. Job action was postponed on June 7 after mediation talks were extended. More than 9,000 members of the border union threatened to begin job action across the country starting June 14 if an agreement is not reached.
Job action by Canada Border Services Agency personnel in 2021 nearly brought commercial cross-border traffic to a standstill, causing major delays at airports and borders across the country and a marathon 36-hour bargaining session to reach an agreement.
Samsung Chairman meets with Meta, Amazon and Qualcomm CEOs in US
IndoUS Tribune Newsdesk
Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong has met with the heads of Meta, Amazon and Qualcomm in the US this week to discuss future technologies and business collaborations, the company said on Thursday.
Lee, who has been on a two-week business trip in the US, was invited to Mark Zuckerberg’s home in Palo Alto, California, on Tuesday where he had talks with Meta’s founder and CEO, according to Samsung Electronics. It is their second meeting in 2024 after Zuckerberg’s Seoul visit in February.
During their discussions, the two business leaders explored ways to enhance cooperation in the future information technology and software sectors, including Artificial Intelligence (AI), Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR).
The following day, Lee visited Amazon’s headquarters in Seattle, Washington, for a meeting with CEO Andy Jassy.
They shared their views on core business areas, such as Generative AI and Cloud Computing. Amazon, a leading Cloud service provider, is a key business partner for Samsung Electronics, the world’s largest memory chipmaker, in the semiconductor sector.
The US tech giant recently announced plans to enter the Generative AI market and innovate its Cloud-based AI services, with a $150 billion investment plan for AI data centers over the next 15 years.
Earlier this week, Lee also had a meeting with Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon at Samsung Electronics’ Device Solutions America in San Jose, California, to seek ways to enhance bilateral cooperation in the booming AI chip market.
Samsung Electronics and Qualcomm have long been close business partners, with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon platform powering Samsung’s latest smartphones. During his two-week stay in the US, Lee also met with global fabless chipmakers to discuss expanding collaboration in the foundry business and developing new technologies for future semiconductors.
US Fed keeps interest rate unchanged
The US Federal Reserve on Wednesday kept the interest rate unchanged but hinted that there could be one cut between now and the end of the year as they continue the fight against inflation. The Fed announcement came after a two-day meeting of its top officials.
They will meet four more times this year -- July, September, November and December. Fed’s interest rates determine interest on home and auto loans and credit cards. Rate hikes are aimed at slowing down the economy by curbing spending, which is a tool used by Central banks around the world to battle inflation. The Fed increased interest rate multiple times starting in early 2022 when inflation hit a four-decade high and took it up to 5.3 percent in July where it has
been kept since.
The Fed expected to announce three cuts in 2024 as inflations showed signs of coming down, but decided against it every time as inflation stayed stubbornly high. Inflation has cooled down notably since May and the Fed predicted that inflation could be more stubborn than expected and the overall rate could bottom out at 2.6 per cent by the end of the year instead of the 2.4 per cent they had estimated earlier.
The Fed aims to bring inflation under two percent. A report by the US Labor Department released just hours before the Fed announcement showed that the consumer price index -- a measure of goods and services -- remained unchanged from June and at 3.3 per cent over June last year. In April the number stood at 3.4 per cent.
EU slaps extra tariffs of up to 38 per cent on Chinese EVs
The European Commission on Wednesday announced to impose provisional duties of up to 38.1 per cent on the import of Chinese electric vehicles (EVs). An investigation by the Commission concluded that the battery electric vehicles (BEVs) value chain in China benefits from “unfair subsidization”, which is causing a threat of “economic injury” to EU BEV producers.
The individual duties on three Chinese EV producers would be 17.4 per cent for BYD, 20 per cent for Geely and 38.1 per cent for SAIC. Other BEV producers in China, which cooperated in the investigation but have not been sampled, would be subject to the average duty of 21 per cent.
According to the Commission, all other BEV producers in China who did not cooperate
in the investigation would be subject to the residual duty of 38.1 per cent. On October 4, 2023, the Commission formally initiated a probe on imports of battery electric vehicles originating in China.
“Following a substantiated request, one BEV producer in China – Tesla – may receive an individually calculated duty rate at the definitive stage,” the Commission said. Last month, US President Joe Biden announced plans to quadruple tariffs on Chinese EVs and hike duties for solar cells, semiconductors and other “strategic” sectors.
The Biden administration plans to hike tariffs this year on Chinese EVs from 25 per cent to 100 per cent.

Wimbledon serves up record prize pot, plans to honor Murray
Wimbledon announced record prize money of 50 million pounds ($63.94 million) on Thursday and revealed plans to honor Andy Murray should this year’s tournament turn out to be a farewell to the former winner. The total pot is 11.9%, or 5.3 million pounds, more than the All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC) paid out at last year’s tournament and double the amount on offer in 2014. Delhi HC restrains rogue websites from unauthorized streaming of ICC T20 WC
The Delhi High Court has restrained several rogue websites from unauthorized and illegal streaming of the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup being held in the West Indies and the US.
Passing the order, Justice Sanjeev Narula granted Star India Private Limited, the plaintiff, an interim injunction after acknowledging a prima facie case. The court also stressed the urgent need for immediate relief due to the fast-paced nature of T20 cricket matches.
“Swift action to prevent such infringements is crucial to preserving the plaintiff’s investment in the broadcasting rights and maintaining their copyright protections,” the court observed.
Delays in blocking these rogue websites could result in substantial financial losses for Star India and irreparable breaches of their broadcast reproduction rights, it noted. The court also instructed domain name registrars to reveal the details of these rogue websites as it ordered the Internet service providers and telecom service providers to block access to them.
Moreover, during ICC events, Star India can report new infringing websites to the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) for immediate blocking orders, ensuring real-time enforcement.
The court recognized that piracy of copyrighted content remains a persistent threat, especially during major sporting events.

the top-level players.
“Interest in attending Wimbledon has never been greater, with unprecedented demand for tickets through our public ballot and corporate hospitality,” said Jevans. “A thriving, successful Championships gives us the opportunity to give back: to the sport, to our local community, and to strategically invest for the future.”
Jevans also announced that wheelchair competitions would have a prize pot of one million pounds to reflect their growing popularity, with singles and doubles draws expanding to 16 players and eight teams. This year’s tournament could be the last for 37-year-old former world number one Murray, whose 2013 title made him the first British Wimbledon men’s singles champion since Fred Perry in 1936. He also won in 2016.
Messi says he won’t play for Argentina at Paris
Olympics
Lionel Messi has decided not to be part of Argentina’s squad for the Paris Olympics as he is no longer at an age where he can play in every tournament. Messi shared his thoughtful perspective, expressing his gratitude for the invitation from former teammate and under-23 manager Javier Mascherano.
“I talked to Mascherano and the truth is we both understood the situation,” Messi told ESPN. However, with the rigors of Copa America looming large and the demands on his aging physique becoming more pronounced, Messi recognized the importance of pacing himself.
Balancing club commitments, international tournaments, and personal well-being, he conceded that participating in two consecutive tournaments would be too taxing at this stage of his career.

T20 World Cup: Disappointing not to get across the line, says Pakistan coach Kirsten
After a six-run defeat to India left Pakistan on the brink of early elimination in the Men’s T20 World Cup, head coach Gary Kirsten said it is “disappointing not to get across the line” and now it’s up to the players to decide how they should perform well in their remaining two Group A fixtures.
After a brilliant bowling performance, led by identical spells of 3-21 from Naseem Shah and Haris Rauf saw them bowl out India for 119 on a tricky pitch at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium, Pakistan were 72/2 at the end of 12 overs, with Mohammad Rizwan and Fakhar Zaman at the crease.
But with the duo being dismissed in quick succession, Pakistan were strangled under pressure by India and ended up at 113/7. The 2009 champions, are yet to get off the mark in the ongoing tournament and need to win against Canada and Ireland, as well as rely on other results to be in their favor to qualify for the Super Eight stage.
“(We) let it slip at the end. Some maybe
not-so-great decision making when you’ve got the game on, it’s (at) a run-a-ball, eight wickets in hand, (it was) decision making at that point and that’s the game. I think we had the game at 76/2, with six or seven overs left at that point, so (it’s) disappointing not to get across the line from the position we got ourselves into.
Asked on what was the plan Pakistan had before coming out to chase, Kirsten revealed, “The message from all of us was
to look for the odd boundary, try and capitalize on the loose balls and make sure that you can get as many ones as you can through the innings. I thought we did that brilliantly for 15 overs.
“We kept it at a run a ball, and then we lost wickets and then we stopped scoring ones and then we were looking for boundaries and once you’ve got to that point it was always going to be hard. So, the message was to do what we executed on for 15 overs,” he said.
Kirsten also said if players in the Pakistan team don’t evolve with the current times, the chance of being found out will come soon. “So, if you’re not up to it and you’re not improving, you’re going to get found out somewhere. We’ve still got a chance in the tournament. We’re still hopeful that things can play (into) our hands. We’ve got to play a lot better cricket than what we are playing.”
He signed off by saying the pitch at New York, which had come under heavy scrutiny in the run-up to the highly-anticipated clash, wasn’t of much dangerous nature during Sunday’s game.
Max Verstappen mounts back on top in Canadian GP
Red Bull’s Max Verstappen emerged victorious in a race that swung dramatically between wet and conditions, culminating in a tense five-car battle for the lead over the final 10 laps of the Canadian Grand Prix at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.
The race began with a damp track, and drivers faced the challenging task of navigating fluctuating weather conditions. McLaren’s Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri seized the opportunity to lead at different stages, capitalizing on strategic pit stops and skillful driving. However, Verstappen’s keen sense of timing and decision-making proved crucial. He pitted just a lap earlier than Norris each time, allowing him to regain the lead and maintain his advantage.
The decisive moment came after a safety-car period with 11 laps remaining. Verstappen, demonstrating his mastery, executed a flawless restart, quickly pulling out nearly a two-second lead in just one lap. Behind him, a fierce battle ensued as Norris and Piastri found themselves entangled in a thrilling contest with the Mercedes duo of

that potentially cost him a higher finish. Hamilton crossed the line in fourth, followed closely by Oscar Piastri, who delivered a commendable performance for McLaren. The United States cricket team became the first side to be penalized under the new stop-clock regulations designed to speed up the pace of play in T20 international cricket against India in Group A match of the T20 World Cup at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York.
The USA were pulled up for not starting the next over in time and as a result, their opponents India were awarded extra runs.
The regulation, which became a permanent feature in men’s ODIs and T20Is from June 1, stipulates that the fielding side must begin the next over within 60 seconds of the previous one ending. If they fail to do so three times in an innings, a five-run penalty is imposed and runs are awarded to their opponent.
The introduction of the stop-clock was meant to improve over rates, and its trial period showed promising results, saving around 20 minutes per ODI match. However, no team had been penalized for sticking to the stop-clock thrice in a single innings until this match, making the USA the first to suffer the consequences of this new rule.
India capitalized on the penalty and went on to win the match by seven wickets with 10 balls to spare, thanks to crucial contributions from their middle-order batsmen. The victory ensured India’s place in the Super 8s with three wins in three games, showcasing their dominance in the tournament.

Kevin Spacey owes millions in legal fees, but insists he has no money
Disgraced actor Kevin Spacey, who has been accused of sexual assault on many counts, has revealed that his house has been foreclosed on as he owes “many millions” of dollars in legal fees from his sexual misconduct trials.
The actor said on ‘Piers Morgan Uncensored’ that he no longer has a permanent home and barely has any money left to his name, reports Variety. He said, “It’s funny you ask that question because this week, where I have been living in Baltimore is being foreclosed on. My house is being sold at auction, so I have to go back to Baltimore and put my things in storage.”
The actor said that he is not sure where he is going to live now. He has been in Baltimore since he started shooting ‘House of Cards’ there.
“I moved there in 2012. This (house) has
been my home since 2016. I can’t pay the bills that I owe,” he added.
When asked if he is facing bankruptcy, he said: “There’s been a couple of times when I thought I was going to file but we’ve managed to dodge it, at least as of today.”
As per Variety, since claims of Spacey’s alleged sexual assaults and inappropriate behavior first arose in the wake of the #MeToo movement in 2017, several legal cases were brought against the two-time Oscar winner.
In 2022, a jury in New York concluded that he did not molest actor Anthony Rapp, who had accused him of sexual assault in the early 1980s when Rapp was 14. The next year, a UK court found Spacey not guilty of nine charges of sexual assault from four complainants. Several other charges and lawsuits have been dropped. Spacey has denied all the allegations.
wife. When asked whether Darshan is under arrest, he stated that the police have taken him into custody and further legal procedures will follow.
Rapper and singer Karan Aujla, who appeared on the chat show ‘The Great Indian Kapil Show’, revealed that he wrote Diljit Dosanjh’s song ‘G.O.A.T.’, which was released in 2020, in just 10 minutes.
In episode 12 of the show, hosted by Kapil Sharma, the powerhouse talents Karan Aujla, Badshah, and Divine came to promote their latest album, ‘Ek Tha Raja’.Talking about Karan, Kapil revealed, “Diljit paaji ka gaana hai G.O.A.T., wo inhone 10-minute mein likhkar de dia tha (Diljit paaji’s song ‘G.O.A.T.’ was written by him in just 10 minutes).
Further joking about it, Kapil asked Karan, “Paaji, hum restaurant jaate hai, and we ask them to bring tea. If they serve it right away, then we doubt if the tea is boiled properly or not, or if it is old. When you gave the song to Diljit paaji in 10 minutes, did he take it happily or did he ask you to brew it more?”
Adding to the humor, Karan shared, “I had written the song in 10 minutes, but because of this very reason, I sent it to him after a couple of hours. I wanted him to think that I was serious.”
Meanwhile, ‘G.O.A.T.’ is Diljit’s 11th album, featuring 16 songs written by Karan, Raj Ranjodh, Amrit Maan, G Sidhu, and Happy Raikoti. Some of the tracks include ‘Intro’, ‘G.O.A.T.’, ‘Clash’, ‘Navi Navi Yaari’, and ‘Peed’, among others.

What can we do about Senator Tammy Baldwin’s anti-India Resolution?
On November 19, 2023, I published an article in the Indo US Tribune about the anti-India resolution introduced in the US Senate by junior Wisconsin Senator Tammy Baldwin. This article is about its movement since then and what we can do about it and to stop the casual acceptance of slurs and inaccuracies about India.
By Dr. Richard L. Benkin
Junior Wisconsin Senator Tammy Baldwin does not fit the profile of a bigot. As the country’s first LGBTQ senator, she has had to face bigotry more than being one herself. Regardless, that does not excuse her belief that allegations of Indian persecution of minorities—and in particular that Prime Minister Narendra Modi ‘Hindu nationalist’ government seeks to relegate non-Hindus to a second class status—without vetting alleged incidents that appear to support that; contributes mightily to the demonization of Hindus and India, much in the same way that many of her same supporters demonize Israel and the Jewish people based on their ideological assumptions. That India and Narendra Modi are ‘bad’ has become an article of faith among both the hard and soft left, facts be damned. This makes Baldwin an enabler of bigotry, in general, and of anti-India, anti-Hindu bigotry specifically.
Last October, she introduced Senate Resolution 424, ‘A resolution expressing the sense of the Senate that the United States Government engage the Government of India to seek a swift end to the persecution of, and violence against, religious minorities and human rights defenders in India and a reversal of government policies that discriminate against Muslims and Christians on the basis of their respective faiths.’ Unlike Senator Baldwin and many of her informants, and no doubt like many of this paper’s readers, I have spent a good deal of time in India; under both the current BJP government and the previous, Congress-led one. Unlike Baldwin, I do not have to rely on unvetted third-party accusations and believe I can offer her an informed perspective. For instance, the resolution cites allegations by the US Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF), but fails to consider that the US State Department, regardless of the party in power, has never adopted USCIRF’s recommendations or allegations against India. The resolution mischaracterizes India’s Citizenship Amendment Act. The resolution notes that 1.9 million citizens of Assam were found not to have sufficient proof of citizenship and claims that “they are now likely to be stripped of their citizenship by quasijudicial bodies known as Foreigners Tribunals.” And that is simply false. What Baldwin does not know, and what her ideologue informants do not tell her, is that when Assam’s government got the figures and commentary, it put any action on hold
until the data could be scrutinized more closely and any glitches fixed. That’s what a democratic government does and not what it would do if it just wanted to strip minorities of their rights. And, Senator Baldwin, Assam is ruled by Prime Minister Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
The good news is that Baldwin has not been able to get a single US Senator to co-sponsor her resolution, which has languished (untouched) in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee since she introduced it on October 24, 2023. And that’s not for want of trying. I know for a fact that she reached out to several Democratic Senators, all of whom declined to support the resolution. So, this is not even a matter of partisanship or politics, but of ignorance and bigotry that informs Baldwin’s resolution. More good news, this resolution has almost no chance of passing. The bad news is that as long as Senators like Tammy Baldwin remain in Washington, the potential for more resolutions that blithely accept the false narrative that India persecutes non-Hindus also remains. Nor is that an idle threat, as we have seen recently with the left’s drumbeat against Israel and continued efforts at the local level to demonize India. We can expect such partisan efforts to remain a priority for India’s enemies with the re-election of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his ruling BJP; as during Modi’s 2013
campaign, I dubbed him “the left’s favorite whipping boy.”
There is only one way US politicians will understand that they owe their constituents better, and have to validate allegations before slandering one of our greatest partners with false ones. And you are a big part of it.
While some officeholders are committed to certain positions and principles, most take positions based on what the people they serve want; and as I learned more years ago than I would like to admit, a politician’s first job is to get elected. If they see that one approach gets them there, they are likely to believe it reflects their voters and will take it. If they see it loses them votes, they are not going to take it. India’s friends and the NRI community here can send a strong message to all US lawmakers by helping to defeat Senator Baldwin this year. She is running for a third six-year term, and should be in a tight race. She appears to be ahead at the moment, but Wisconsin (for now) seems to be trending Republican. Her presumptive opponent, businessman Eric Hovde, has six opponents in the August GOP primary, but he has received all the major Republican endorsements and has a large fundraising lead over his opponents. The November election will be between Baldwin and Hovde. To send that strong message, help end
the bigoted acceptance of anti-India slanders, and let Washington know how important the US-India relationship is; urge everyone you know in Wisconsin to make sure to vote for Baldwin’s opponent in November. Besides voting, people also can get involved by making calls, urging others to vote for Hovde, and make clear that this is a matter of fighting bigotry, anti-Asian bias (which will resonate with other voting blocs), or even volunteer or make donations to defeat Baldwin. With Hindus comprising about one percent of the state’s population, and Asians about three percent (the greatest number of whom are Indian); this sort of active, principled, effort could tip the scales in what all political prognosticators consider too close to call.
It also should be seen as a way for NRIs and Hindus to let all politicians know that they are a group to be reckoned with and that bias against them will no longer be tolerated. A strong finish will send a message to all US officeholders that they cannot simply accept the unverified claims of ideologues, or hold onto prejudicial assumptions about India and Hindus. It will also demonstrate that politicians cannot afford to ignore the power of this fast-growing demographic group. Special Interview
Narendra Modi’s Third Term: Interview with Avinash Rai
Anew government has been sworn in, with Narendra Modi taking charge as Prime Minister for the third time. Though his party has not been able to secure an absolute majority in the Lok Sabha, as on two previous occasions, it is still the singlelargest party. So, after the last 10 years, India’s polity is reverting to a coalition configuration, which is a more common historic pattern.
The Publisher, Dr Avi Verma of the Indo-US Tribune had the honor of interviewing Avinash Rai Khanna, BJP In-charge of Himacal Pradesh. Khanna has held positions in the Rajya Sabha as well as the 14th Lok Sabha in the past. The two discussed various political issues, including coalition governments, electoral strategies, governance challenges, opposition dynamics, and the reservation system in India. Below are some of the excerpts from the interview:
Indo-US Tribune: What do you have to say about BJP not securing a majority this time? There is a reduction in the number of seats that BJP won. Will it affect the functioning of the government in any way?
Khanna: Even during Atal Ji’s tenure as the PM, we ran a successful coalition government, which is still considered one of the best. In Modi Ji’s two terms, despite having an absolute majority, we always respected our allies. Our current cabinet has been formed with equal opportunity and respect for coalition members. Modi Ji has assured that strong steps will be taken to ensure smooth governance. The NDA partners have expressed their support for Modi Ji’s leadership, and I am confident this government will deliver excellent results. Regarding the reduction in seats, we reached a saturation point in Rajasthan and had a strong margin in UP. We lost
five seats in Haryana. Many people are mentioning issues like the Ram Mandir controversy affecting electoral outcomes in UP. I think elections involve opposition parties coming together, and we must accept the people’s mandate. We lost many seats by narrow margins, and we will analyze the reasons. Our workers have helped nearly 25 crore people rise above the poverty line. We will continue working hard and improve our communication strategies to address bigger issues.
Indo-US Tribune: Two of the main representatives of this coalition are N.
Chandrababu Naidu and Nitish Kumar. Both these politicians have their own ambitions. Will it be difficult for Modi Ji to keep both of them happy and maintain a stable government?
Khanna: Modi Ji is an expert leader. Despite media speculation, he has formed the cabinet smoothly. All coalition members, including Naidu and Kumar, are committed to supporting Modi Ji. They believe only Narendra Bhai Modi can take the country forward, and they have pledged their full support.
Indo-US Tribune: The economic policies of BJP, the ambition that Modi Ji has taken, Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, considering the country being divided on the issue of religion, how easy or difficult will it be for the Modi government to achieve targets along with striking a balanced approach?
Khanna: There are two parts to your question. First, regarding stability, we are close to an absolute majority. Our experienced ministers have taken charge, and we are confident in running the coalition government effectively. On economic policies, since Modi Ji’s government came to power, India has become economically sound and is now the fifth-largest economy. We aim to reach the third position soon. Our policies are designed to uplift the poorest, providing housing, sanitation, and food security. What the Modi government has done over the years was unimaginable until sometime back for a lot of people. His achievements include the removal of Article 370 and the construction of the Ram Temple. We aim for a developed India by 2047, as demonstrated by our successful hosting of G20 meetings and I am sure we will make it happen.
Indo-US Tribune: The Congress party’s seat count has doubled, and it is trying to rebound under Rahul Gandhi’s leadership. Do you see a strong opposition emerging, and what do you think about the role of opposition in the country?

IndoUS Tribune Newsdesk
Special Interview
Term: An Rai Khanna
Khanna: The government and opposition have their own paths. A constructive opposition can help fulfill the dream of a developed India. The Congress party’s leadership crisis is a significant issue for them. While Mallikarjun Kharge plays an important role, the Gandhi family still dominates the party. A good opposition role will undoubtedly accelerate our development.
Indo-US Tribune: At what level do you see yourself in the third tenure of the Modi government? How do you think your role can benefit Modi 3.0?
Khanna: I have held many important political roles across different states and performed my duties with transparency and dedication. My intention is to help the party move forward. Despite BJP’s large membership, we have a long way to go. Success requires an honest and dedicated approach.
Indo-US Tribune: Reflecting on the incident that happened with Kangana Ranaut in Chandigarh, do you feel
that the politics of India is going in the wrong direction?
Khanna: What happened with Kangana should not have occurred. Such misbehavior by a uniformed officer is unacceptable. Politicizing the incident was also wrong. Politics should maintain integrity and standards. The fear of a new trend of destructive behavior is concerning.
Indo-US Tribune: How do you view the issue of reservation?
Khanna: We respect the Constitution and the reasons for reservation to marginalized classes. However, we also focus on empowering youth through entrepreneurship. Initiatives like ‘Startup India’ and ‘Stand-Up India’ encourage capable individuals to carve their own paths. To conclude, I congratulate the BJP, NDA, and Modi Ji on the third term. I hope this tenure will bring more stability and make the path to 2029 smoother. I remain confident in Modi Ji’s leadership driving India’s growth and stability.
Highlights of the conversation:
1. Coalition Governments and Electoral Strategies: The conversation touches upon the history of successful coalition governments, highlighting Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s term and the current NDA government led by Shri Narendra Modi Ji. It acknowledges the importance of allies and the need to respect their contributions.
2. Election Results and Losses: The conversation delves into the recent election results, analyzing the reasons behind losing seats in certain regions. Khanna mentioned issues like the Ram Mandir controversy affecting electoral outcomes.
3. Government Stability and Economic Policies: Despite a reduced majority, there’s confidence in the government’s ability to govern effectively. The current economic stability and the implementation of various welfare schemes are cited as indicators of successful governance.
4. Role of Opposition: The importance of a strong and constructive opposition is acknowledged by Khanna, as it serves as a check on the government’s actions. However, there’s also criticism of the opposition’s leadership crisis and lack of clear direction.
5. Personal Role and Responsibility: Khanna expresses readiness to take on any responsibility assigned by the party and emphasizes the goal of party unity and growth.
6. Political Incidents and Public Behavior: The incident involving Kangana Ranaut is discussed, with an emphasis on maintaining decorum and respectful behavior in politics.
7. Reservation System: The conversation addresses concerns about the reservation system and its impact on merit-based opportunities. It suggests a focus on creating avenues for entrepreneurship and job creation rather than solely relying on government jobs.
Overall, the discussion reflected on various challenges and opportunities in Indian politics, with an optimistic outlook for the future under the leadership of Narendra Modi and the BJP.

Health Corner Supporting Mature Students
IndoUS Tribune Newsdesk
The traditional medical school model, which requires students to uproot their lives and shoulder significant debt, is a barrier to the mature student aiming to make a career change and commence their medical studies. In contrast, the International University of the Health Sciences (IUHS) stands as a pioneer in medical education, placing innovation at its core. At IUHS, we believe that leveraging technology can profoundly reshape the learning experience, allowing students to stay in their local communities while pursuing
their studies. The hybrid education model is particularly significant, delivering the university to the student through awardwinning technology. This empowers mature students, who often must continue working or have family commitments, to fulfill their dream of becoming a doctor without disrupting their current life. IUHS removes the obstacles to pursuing their passion for a medical career.
Furthermore, IUHS is committed to investing in curriculum development, learning tools, and student academic support instead of physical facilities. This approach enables us to offer tuition fees that are a fraction of those charged by other private medical universities. Reduced tuition fees make the prospect of affording a medical degree while supporting a family a reality, especially through monthly payment plans or discounts for upfront payment.
The average time a mature IUHS student takes to complete the postgraduate Doctor of Medicine degree is 7 years, despite the program being designed to be completed in 4 years. This extended time reflects the culture of flexibility within the University. Students at IUHS embark on a personal journey, recognizing that life events may necessitate a temporary pause in studies. This flexibility, coupled with the understanding and support from the dedicated staff and faculty at IUHS, is particularly crucial for mature students facing significant life circumstances, such as caring for an elderly parent.
At IUHS, we believe we have a deep understanding of mature students undergoing a career change. That’s why IUHS offers flexibility, affordability, a hybrid learning methodology, and a personalized approach to each student through the Student Support Services Team.
We take the time to listen to each student’s situation and strive to assist in every possible way, including extending deadlines to allow students to navigate personal circumstances without compromising their studies.
The average age of a student at entry into the University is 37 years of age with an age range of 29-68!
If you’re still contemplating what it would be like to study later in life, watch some student videos on our YouTube channel. You’ll frequently encounter the comment, “When I found out about IUHS, it was like a dream coming true.” Contact our Admissions Team for a consultation at admissions@iuhs.edu. The truth about testosterone: Why supplements may not be the answer for aging men
By IndoUs Tribune
You’ve probably heard the commercials for testosterone supplements, promising to restore the vigor and strength of your youth (not to mention weight loss). These advertisements often paint an enticing picture of regaining lost vitality with just a simple pill or injection. However, the reality is far more complex, and for most men, supplementing with testosterone is unnecessary and can even be hazardous to their health.
The Natural Decline of Testosterone
“Testosterone levels typically peak in late adolescence and early adulthood. After middle age, a man’s testosterone level usually drops about 1 percent each year,” said Angel Garcia Otano, MD, a family medicine physician with Endeavor Health Medical Group. This gradual decline is a normal part of aging and does not necessarily indicate a health problem. However, it’s important to understand what can cause low testosterone levels and how they can impact your health.
Causes of Low Testosterone (Hypogonadism)
Apart from aging, several other factors can lead to low testosterone levels, or hypogonadism. These include:
4Genetics: Some men are born with conditions that affect their hormone levels.
4Undescended Testicles: This condition at birth can lead to reduced testosterone production later in life.
4Mumps Orchitis: This mumps
complication can result in testicular damage.
4Injuries: Physical damage to the testicles can impair hormone production.
4Cancer Treatment: Chemotherapy and radiation therapy can adversely affect the testicles.
Symptoms of Low Testosterone
Low testosterone can manifest in various ways, affecting physical, sexual, and emotional health:
4Changes in Sexual Function: This may include reduced sex drive, erectile dysfunction, and infertility.
4Changes in Sleep Patterns: Sometimes, low testosterone causes insomnia or other sleep disturbances.
4Physical Changes: Increased body fat, reduced muscle bulk and strength, decreased bone density, hot flashes, enlarged breast tissue, shrinking testicles, and body hair loss. You may also experience a general decline in energy levels.
4Emotional Changes: Low testosterone may lead to decreased motivation, selfconfidence, depression, or difficulties with concentration and memory.
However, it is important to note that these symptoms could also be caused by other factors, such as medications or diseases like diabetes, depression, or thyroid problems. The only way to accurately determine if your testosterone levels are low is through a blood test conducted by a healthcare professional.
Risks of Testosterone Therapy
Testosterone therapy carries several risks, and its efficacy in treating symptoms related to age-related testosterone decline is still uncertain. Potential risks include:
4Cardiovascular Issues: Increased risk of heart disease and stroke.
4Prostate Health: Potential stimulation of prostate growth and an increase in the risk of prostate cancer.
4Sleep Apnea: Exacerbation of existing sleep apnea.
4Blood Clots: Elevated risk of blood clots.
4Skin Reactions: Irritation or rash at the site of application for topical treatments.
Natural Alternatives to Boost Energy
and Vitality
For middle-aged men who haven’t been diagnosed with hypogonadism and are experiencing fatigue or weight gain, Dr. Garcia Otano recommends lifestyle changes over testosterone supplements:
4Increase Exercise: Regular physical activity can boost energy levels, improve mood, and aid in weight management.
4Get More Sleep: Quality sleep is crucial for overall health and can help mitigate some symptoms of low testosterone.
4Eat Healthier: A balanced diet rich in nutrients supports overall well-being and hormonal health.
Consulting Your Doctor
If you suspect you may have low testosterone, it is essential to talk to your doctor. They can perform the necessary tests to determine your hormone levels and recommend appropriate, individualized treatment if needed. Self-medicating with testosterone supplements without medical advice can lead to significant health risks and should be avoided.
In conclusion, while testosterone supplements are heavily marketed as a solution to aging-related symptoms, they are not suitable for everyone and can pose serious health risks. Focusing on healthy lifestyle choices and consulting with healthcare professionals are the best steps towards maintaining health and vitality as you age.

The earnings grow taxdeferred and qualified withdrawals are taxfree; non qualified withdrawals are taxable, have penalties, and may have clawbacks
of state incentives. 529s can be used for vocational, community college, college/university, graduate and professional education. Many 529s have state tax benefits for state residents (IL deduction $10K individuals, $20K couples); if not, people can
select any other state 529 plan. Annual contribution limits apply ($18K in 2024); 5 years worth of contributions can be pulled forward (IRS Form 709 required). Parents, grandparents and others can open 529 for a beneficiary. Several states offer $50-250 incentives (IL $50) for opening new 529 accounts for newborns. SECURE 2.0 (2022) allowed limited and conditional rollover of excess 529 funds into beneficiary’s Roth IRAs, but some states may treat these rollovers as non qualified and may impose clawbacks of state incentives (IL 529 made them qualified in May 2024). 529 assets are no longer counted in the owner/grantor’s estate but there can be clawbacks by creditors.
There are complex financial aid eligibility implications. Many students may use a mix of financial aid, part-time work, 529 funds, and other savings. Recent financial aid FAFSA removed hurdles for grandparent 529. Many parents may also use UTMA, Roth IRAs and taxable accounts for funding college. Make-up is an art and can be daunting for those trying it for the first time. From understanding your skin type to mastering basic techniques like blending and contouring, here’s a complete guide on how to apply make-up for newbies. Celebrity make-up artist Penaz Mithuji, shares some tips on eight essential make-up tips for beginners.
1. A clean canvas: Start with a clean face before applying any make-up. Ensure it is clean and moisturized. A good skincare routine helps your make-up go on smoothly and last longer. Cleanse, tone, and moisturize your skin to create a healthy base.
2. Invest in quality: Quality makeup brushes and products can make a significant difference in your application. They provide better control and a more polished finish. Begin with a few essentials, a foundation brush, a fluffy powder brush, an eyeshadow brush, and a beauty blender.
3. Understand your skin Type: Choosing the right foundation according to your skin type is very important as much as selecting the right foundation. Test shades on your jawline, not your hand, to find the perfect match. Consider oil-free formulas for oily skin, hydrating foundations for dry skin, and mineral makeup for sensitive skin.
4. Blending is key: To achieve a natural and flawless look, blend your foundation, eye shadow, or blush seamlessly into your skin. Use gentle, circular motions with your brush or beauty blender.
5. Define your brows: Well-groomed brows frame your face and complete your look. Use a brow pencil or powder that is one shade lighter than your hair color. Avoid using black. Fill in only the sparse areas with light, feathery strokes, and blend with a spoolie brush for a natural finish.
6. Master eyeshadow basics: Start with neutral shades that complement your eye color and shape. Different eye shapes require different blending techniques. Use one that flatters your eye shape.
7. Perfect your lip game: Choose lip colors that flatter your skin tone. Start with a lip liner to define your lips and prevent feathering. Fill in with your chosen lipstick or gloss. For a fuller look, dab a bit of gloss in the centre of your lips.
8. Practice makes perfect: Make-up is an art, and like any art, it requires practice. Don’t be discouraged by mistakes. Experiment with different looks and techniques to find what works best for you. Over time, you’ll develop your style. Don’t forget to have fun.
