Congratulating Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the BJP-led NDA’s “historic” achievement of securing three consecutive victories in the Lok Sabha elections, Sri Lanka’s Opposition leader, Sajith Premadasa on Wednesday reaffirmed support for India’s permanent membership in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).
Making a special speech in the Lankan Parliament, Premadasa emphasized that India, with its status as the world’s most populous country and a significant global economic and military power, deserves this recognition.
“This is of utmost importance as India has the largest population in the whole world. Also, when you examine the world’s economic, security power configuration, I feel that this representation of India in the UNSC must be achieved and must be promoted,” said Premadasa.
“We as parliamentarians, all 225, in this august assembly would like to propose that India be made a permanent member of the UN Security Council. I think it is long overdue and it should be implemented as quickly as possible,” the Opposition leader said, expressing his confidence that the current permanent members of the UNSC would acknowledge India’s rightful place in the global power structure.
“I am pretty sure that the five members who are there right now would have no objection to establishing this world power reality in the UN structure,” he stated.
Premadasa also acknowledged the strong bilateral relationship between Sri Lanka and India and expressed gratitude for India’s significant financial support including grants, loans, and other financial aid totaling approximately six billion USD.
Hailing his visionary leadership, practical policies, and effective governance, the Lankan leader highlighted that Narendra Modi is the first Prime Minister since Jawaharlal Nehru to accomplish the feat of leading the country for the third time. The Lankan Opposition leader also reiterated his commitment to maintain cooperation between the two nations to ensure mutual prosperity and benefits.
Meanwhile, Sri Lanka President Ranil Wickremesinghe also congratulated PM Modi on NDA’s victory and re-election for the third term.
US to send NSA Jake Sullivan to engage with Modi government
US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan is scheduled to visit India to engage with the new government in New Delhi as Narendra Modi is set to take oath as the Prime Minister for a record third consecutive term, the White House said.
Sullivan’s visit was discussed when US President Joe Biden spoke to Prime Minister Modi on Wednesday to congratulate him on his re-election.
“President Joseph Biden Jr spoke with Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India to congratulate him and the National Democratic Alliance on their historic victory in India’s general election,” the White House said in a statement.
The two leaders stressed their commitment to strengthening the US-India Comprehensive and Global Strategic Partnership and to advancing their common vision of a free, open and prosperous India-Pacific region, the White House added.
President Biden praised the “friendship” between the US and India on X. This was followed by similar congratulatory messages by other senior members of his Biden administration, including Secretary of State Antony Blinken.
Right time to reset relations, says China’s state-run newspaper ahead of Modi 3.0
As the BJP-led NDA is all set to form a government under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the third consecutive time, one of China’s leading English-language newspapers said on Thursday that this is an “opportune moment to reset relations” between the two neighboring countries.
“The two countries should demonstrate they have the wisdom to settle the dispute through negotiations in good faith. To that purpose, while maintaining their close
communication through diplomatic and military channels, they should not allow any external power to take advantage of their border dispute to sow discord between them,” state-run ‘China Daily’ mentioned in an editorial.
While highlighting that as neighbors and the two largest developing countries, China and India have “more common interests than differences”, the editorial blamed “some Western countries” for driving a wedge between New Delhi and Beijing.
PM Modi responded to President Biden’s post, saying he was happy to receive the call from his “friend”.

The UK and India share the closest of friendships, and together that friendship will continue to thrive,” Sunak posted on X after the phone call with PM Modi. The two leaders also reflected on the strength of the India-UK relationship and agreed that this will continue to grow in the future.
“Both agreed to stay in touch and looked forward to seeing each other at the G7 Leaders’ Summit in Italy next week,” said a statement released by the UK Foreign Ministry.
Last month, Sunak hailed India’s rise as an ‘economic superpower’, asserting that new and fast-growing economic superpowers like India, Indonesia, and Nigeria are significantly reshaping the global economy.

US to send NSA Jake Sullivan to engage with Modi government
Though Sullivan’s visit has been announced, his travel dates to India are yet to be finalized. However, it is expected to be within days of PM Modi taking oath, which is likely to take place on June 9.
Besides President Biden, Senator Ben Cardin, Chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, also congratulated the Modi administration for conducting the massive elections which saw a turnout of millions in only a few weeks.
“The people of India have again demonstrated their commitment to the democratic process, casting their votes in spite of this year’s intense heat waves,” the White House said.
Maldives to amend laws to ban Israeli nationals from entering
The Maldivian government has decided to amend its laws to ban Israeli nationals from entering the country, local media cited Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusan as reporting.
At a press briefing on Sunday, Ihusan said the decision was taken at a Cabinet meeting held earlier in the day following calls by local citizens to ban Israeli nationals due to devastating attacks in Gaza, Xinhua news agency reported.
He added that the government will make legal amendments to implement the ban and a special committee has been appointed to expedite the process. The Maldives receives more than one million tourists per year out of which an estimated 15,000 tourists are from Israel, local media said.
Foreign policy under Modi 3.0 will be crucial for the entire region, say Lankan experts
As India has completed its elections and results are out, foreign policy experts and academics have viewed the results as proof of India’s strong democracy while the re-election of Prime Minister Modi’s government is proof of strong India which is an advantage for Asia and South Asia. Former diplomat and media and political analyst in Asia, Ranga Kalansooriya viewed India’s general election results as a sign of vibrant democracy.
“This is a sign of a healthy democracy because you need checks and balances in a healthy democracy. India will have a strong opposition as well,” Kalansooriya said in an interview. He said that in the regional context a strong India, or politically strong India is an advantage because the region is looking at India as a regional power and regional leader.
“India is rising up as a leader of the global south. So strong India is an advantage for Asia and South Asia,” said Kalansooriya, who was also the former Director General of the Department of Government Information in Sri Lanka. He added that as Sri Lankans and also citizens of South Asia people should be happy about India’s successful completion of elections and also on the victory of the BJP.
“Congress has also done quite well, more than expected,” he said.
Sri Lankan academic, geopolitics and foreign policy analyst Prof. Asanga Abeyagoonasekera said that in the backdrop where China has reached, the foreign policy of Prime Minister Modi’s third term would be crucial not only for India but for the entire region. Abeyagoonasekera said that the hybrid operations with civil and military nexus are already visible in both South and Southeast Asia regions.
“Submarine bases in Bangladesh such as
the BNS Sheikh Hasina submarine base at Pekua in Cox’s Bazar and in Cambodia Ream Port to Chinese research vessels in Sri Lanka and Maldives are clear military maneuvers by Beijing,” he warned. He said that PM Modi’s third term will be much more challenging than his previous tenures due to China’s ambitions and aggression in the region.
“A delicate balance is required in India’s foreign policy, working with US IndoPacific strategy and also using India’s ‘strategic autonomy’ to work with other nations such as Iran and Russia,” said Prof. Abeygoonasekara, who was also the former founding Director General of the Institute of National Security Studies Sri Lanka (INSSSL). An academic, defense analyst and researcher Nilanthan Niruthan that PM Modi’s coming to power for the third time, the trajectory of the India-Sri Lanka friendship, of the India-China rivalry and of India’s engagement with the world in general is likely to continue in the same path.
Nilanthan Niruthan said that in terms of the impact PM Modi will have on India’s engagement with the world, with the region or Sri Lanka, there is unlikely to be a significant shift in this third term. “We should remember that foreign policy is something that has a certain level of party consensus in India at the moment. So regardless of who the Prime Minister is, many of the long-term plans that India has for the region regarding China, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, this is not likely to change much,” he said.
Guterres congratulates Indian people for ‘massive exercise of democracy’
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres congratulates the people of India for the “massive exercise of democracy”, his Associate Spokesperson Florencia Soto Nino said on Tuesday.
“We, of course, want to congratulate the people of India for engaging in this massive exercise of democracy as they are the largest democratic elections in the world,” she said.
Since the tallying of results was on, she said, “We can’t officially comment until all the voting has all the counting has been done” on its outcome.
“And we hope to have a much more official statement once everything has been said,” she added.
Customarily the Secretary-General sends a message of congratulations to leaders when their elections are officially announced. At the time of noon briefing in New York, 19 results were still pending while Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s National Democratic Alliance had won 292 seats in the 543-member Lok Sabha assuring him of a third term. The opposition INDIA bloc had won 232 seats in the election.
Right time to reset relations, says China’s state-run newspaper ahead of Modi 3.0
“That shows the incredible power, the upliftment, the empowerment that PM Modi has brought to every single Indian on the whole planet. There is no doubt about that all,” Talwar said in an interview after the signing of the MoU in London.
“Although the border dispute has flared up and the Indian government has been implementing protectionist measures targeting Chinese companies, investments and imports since 2020, the bilateral trade volume has remained sizable and stable, staying between $120 billion and $130 billion over the past three years. This should prompt New Delhi not to let its Western supplicants have its ear,” it stated.
Suggesting that the just-concluded Lok Sabha elections present India an
opportunity to “reset its past China policy” and further tap into the potential of Sino-Indian relations, the editorial mentioned that the two sides should support each other and contribute to each other’s success, instead of viewing each other with suspicion and undermining one another.
China’s development, it stated, does not represent risks, uncertainties or threats to India, but rather growth, development and opportunities, as is true vice versa.
“Combined, the population of the two countries accounts for about 37.5 per cent of the global population. The two neighbors should be open to each other’s development and always make joint efforts to approach bilateral relations from a strategic height and long-term perspective. The strong complementarity between their economic structures and development stages makes them good partners; their historical cultural and people-to-people bonds make them good neighbors; and by upholding their strategic autonomy on the world stage, they can safeguard world peace and stability and promote a just and fair international order and multilateral global governance,” the China Daily editorial detailed.

Georgia court halts Trump’s 2020 election subversion case
An appeals court in Georgia halted criminal trial proceedings in former US President Donald Trump’s 2020 election subversion case while it reviews appeals. Trump and 18 others were indicted in August over alleged efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election in the southeastern US state.
Trump has pleaded not guilty and criticized the cases against him as part of a politically motivated attempt to keep him from recapturing the White House.
The order from the Georgia Court of Appeals was issued on Wednesday after the court earlier this week set a tentative October hearing date for the appeal, Xinhua news agency reported.
Trump and several co-defendants in the case have argued that Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis’ relationship with then-special prosecutor Nathan Wade
caused a conflict of interest.
Trump and some of his co-defendants in the sprawling racketeering case have been trying to get Willis disqualified from the
case because of a romantic relationship she had with Wade, the special prosecutor she hired to help handle the case, reported CNN, adding that the defendants argued that Willis financially benefited
Kirby asserts US watching tensions on Korean Peninsula with great concern
The US is watching growing tensions on the Korean Peninsula with “great concern”, a White House official has said, stressing ongoing efforts to ensure that America is “best-postured” to support South Korea.
National Security Communications Advisor
John Kirby made the remarks as tensions have risen due to Pyongyang’s recent actions, including a military reconnaissance satellite launch, artillery drills, its sending of trash-filled balloons into South Korea and jamming of GPS navigation signals.
“Of course, we’re watching the increasing tensions with great concern,” Kirby said at a press briefing at the Foreign Press Center in Washington.
“We have a treaty alliance with the Republic of Korea. It’s an alliance that we take seriously,
continue to make sure that we, the United States, are best postured to support our Korean allies, and that includes across the realm of national power, but certainly in terms of military capability, and we’ll continue to do that,” he added.
Kirby said that he does not have any military posture change in support of South Korea at the moment, but stressed that Washington is
in “close communication” with South Korea on security matters. The official also stressed the US’ continued openness to engage with Pyongyang.
“The offer to sit down with the North Koreans without preconditions stands. We continue to make it clear that we would be willing to sit down with the DPRK without preconditions to talk about the denuclearization of the peninsula, and to date, the Kim Jong-un regime has not taken us up on that offer,” he said.
DPRK stands for the North’s official name, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.
“Instead, they continue to test their ballistic missiles. They continue to fire missiles into the sea. They continue to also conduct provocative, unnecessary actions towards the south, which again just reminds us and underscores how important security and stability there on the Korean peninsula is,” he added.
US won’t send military advisors to Ukraine for training purpose, White House says
The US will maintain its policy of not sending military advisors to Ukraine, a top US national security official said.
“As we’ve said several times on the record, we are not planning to send US military advisors or troops, trainers to train Ukrainians in Ukraine,” said US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan on Tuesday.
Sullivan made the remarks to reporters en route to Paris, France, where he will accompany US President Joe Biden to attend a ceremony commemorating the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings along the Normandy coast during World War II,
followed by the president’s state visit to France, Xinhua news agency reported.
He said the US has been offering training
to Ukrainian soldiers outside of the Ukrainian territory. Such practice, he said, is being carried out in Germany, where “thousands of Ukrainian soldiers” are being trained on how to operate Western-made military equipment.
“We stand ready to continue and, in fact, expand that training,” Sullivan said.
“We will have the opportunity to speak with the French president and the French team on the ground about what they are thinking, and obviously, I’m not going to get ahead of any announcements they make,” he said, in light of recent media reports saying that French President Emmanuel Macron is mulling the dispatch of his country’s military instructors into Ukraine.
from the relationship with Wade, who defense attorneys say covered several vacations for the pair.
CNN pointed out that the new order is the latest indication that a trial in the state-level Georgia election subversion case will not occur before the 2024 presidential election.
Trump, the Republican Party’s presumptive 2024 presidential nominee, has been indicted in four criminal cases -- two by the US Justice Department, and two by state prosecutors in New York and Georgia, separately. The Georgia case is the fourth criminal case brought against Trump.
The Georgia Court of Appeals’ order came just days after Trump was found guilty in the first criminal trial of a former president in US history.
Trump was convicted of felony crimes by a jury in New York last week on all 34 felony counts of falsifying business records in a bid to hide hush money payment to a porn star in 2016, shortly before the presidential election.

NDA’s victory and Modi’s leadership: What now?
Dr. (H) Avi Verma
Publisher
By Dr. Avi Verma Publisher
With the NDA securing 293 seats in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, PM Narendra Modi is set to lead the government for another term. However, the reduced majority compared to previous elections raises significant questions about the stability and effectiveness of the new administration.
Delhi Office: delhi@indoustribune.com Letter from Pub-
A Major Blow to Modi’s Leadership Narendra Modi continues as prime minister, but the manner in which he won represents a major blow. His ruling party, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), expected to dominate the polls but could not secure a majority without the help of allies. The BJP won only 240 seats, relying on the smaller parties within the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) to achieve a majority in the 543-member Lok Sabha. For a BJP that previously enjoyed a majority on its own with 303 seats in 2019, this is a stark shift in its grip on power.
Coalition Dynamics and Kingmakers
With his allies now holding the balance of power, Modi must balance his governing with securing their loyalty. Two of the biggest players in the coalition, the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and the Janata Dal (United) [JD(U)], hold a combined 28 seats and are led by politicians known for switching loyalties. This dynamic makes the coalition’s stability precarious, as these allies could potentially align with the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) if their interests are not adequately addressed.
Challenges Ahead
PM Modi’s leadership has been characterized by a dynamic and proactive approach, focusing on development, national security, and economic reforms. Maintaining this vibrant style will be crucial but challenging given the new political landscape and reduced majority. The NDA’s ability to navigate complex political terrain and maintain unity among diverse partners will be key to sustaining a stable government over the next five years.
Impact of Secularism and Ram Mandir
Secularism played a nuanced role in the 2024 elections. While the BJP’s Hindutva ideology has been a point of contention, the completion of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya resonated
strongly with a significant portion of the electorate, consolidating support among Hindu voters. However, the focus on Hindutva also alienated some sections of the population, contributing to the loss of seats in states like Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra, where issues of economic distress and agrarian crisis were more pressing.
Surge in Rahul Gandhi’s Standing
The 2024 elections marked a significant resurgence for the Indian National Congress, with the party doubling its numbers in the Lok Sabha from the previous election. This surge has significantly bolstered Rahul Gandhi’s political standing, positioning him as a credible leader and a formidable opponent to the BJP.
Challenges and Opportunities for Rahul Gandhi
While the increase in seats is a positive development for the Congress, Rahul Gandhi faces numerous challenges. The new political realities require him to navigate coalition dynamics within the INDIA alliance effectively, maintain party unity, and continue rebuilding the Congress’s organizational strength. The surge in numbers provides an opportunity for Gandhi to capitalize on the momentum and address the issues that resonate with the electorate, such as economic inequality, unemployment, and social justice.
Rahul Gandhi’s ability to overcome these challenges and leverage the increased parliamentary presence will be crucial. The enhanced visibility and influence in the Lok Sabha give him a platform to push forward his agenda and counter the BJP’s policies. However, sustained success will depend on strategic alliances, effective communication, and addressing the diverse needs of the electorate.
Prospects for Another Full Term
The slim majority suggests that internal and external pressures could impact the coalition’s stability. Managing these dynamics effectively will be crucial for
completing another full term. The BJP’s ability to work harmoniously with its allies and address regional concerns will be pivotal. Moreover, fulfilling the agenda of continued economic reforms, infrastructure development, and social policies will depend on effective governance and coalition management.
Conclusion
The NDA’s victory in the 2024 elections, while significant, comes with its set of challenges. PM Modi’s leadership will be crucial in navigating the complexities of coalition politics and maintaining a stable government. The next five years will test the NDA’s ability to deliver on its promises and continue India’s trajectory of growth and development. The evolving political landscape will require adaptability, strategic alliances, and a continued focus on addressing the needs and aspirations of the Indian populace.
The 2024 elections have highlighted the importance of coalition politics in India and the need for inclusive governance. As the NDA prepares to govern with a reduced majority, the focus will be on maintaining stability, fulfilling electoral promises, and ensuring that the diverse voices within the coalition are heard and respected. The political journey ahead will be challenging, but it also presents an opportunity for the NDA to reinforce its commitment to India’s development and democratic resilience.
Simultaneously, Rahul Gandhi’s strengthened position provides a counterbalance and the potential for a more robust opposition, which is essential for a healthy democracy. His ability to navigate the new political landscape and address key issues will determine whether the Congress can sustain and build upon its gains, offering a viable alternative to the electorate in future elections.

Australia seeks inputs on developing ‘new roadmap’ for closer economic engagement with India
The Australian government has invited public submissions as it prepares a new roadmap for the country’s closer economic engagement with India. The roadmap will not only take stock of Australia’s existing economic initiatives with India but also explore innovative ways of doing more together.
“There has never been a better time to engage economically with India, already the most populous country in the world, India’s economy is growing at pace. In 2023, India was our fourth-largest export market and is on track to be the world’s third-largest economy by the end of this decade. Australia is well positioned to both benefit from and contribute to India’s growth story – if we target our efforts wisely,” believes Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT).
The Department mentioned that work on both sides in recent years has delivered results, including through the Australia-India Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (ECTA), the opening of a Consulate General in Bengaluru - which was matched by India’s in Brisbane - and the establishment of the Center for Australia India Relations. Alongside this, the next stage of trading relationship, the Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA), is currently under negotiation between the two countries.

WHO member states extend pandemic agreement negotiations for another year
Member states of the WHO have agreed to extend the talks over the pandemic agreement for another year, allowing for more time needed to finalize the landmark treaty to combat future pandemics and enhance preparedness. The Intergovernmental Negotiating Body (INB), which was established in December 2021 to draft the agreement and guide the negotiation process, will continue its mandate to deliver the agreement by the next World Health Assembly in 2025, or earlier, if possible, at a special session of the health assembly in 2024, Xinhua news agency reported on Saturday.
“There was a clear consensus among all member states on the need for a further instrument to help the world better fight a fullblown pandemic,” said INB co-chair Precious Matsoso.
This year’s World Health Assembly also agreed on a package of amendments to another international instrument, the International Health Regulations (2005) (IHR), introducing a definition of a pandemic emergency to trigger more effective international collaboration in response to a potential pandemic. The amendments will bolster countries’ ability to detect and respond to future outbreaks and pandemics by strengthening their national capacities, and coordination between member states, on disease surveillance, information sharing and response, said WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
continues to expand both strategically and economically, DFAT detailed that there have been as many as 23 Australian ministerial visits to India and 15 Indian ministerial visits to Australia since May 2022.
Besides the “high tempo of senior Ministerial visits,” the India-Australia 2+2 Foreign and Defense Ministerial Dialogue, the annual Foreign Ministers Framework Dialogue, joint hosting of the Indian Ocean Conference in February 2024, and working closely on the Quad initiatives have been the highlights of partnership between India and Australia.
“Our partnership with India will be crucial to the Albanese government’s vision for ‘A
Future Made in Australia’. The new roadmap will help secure Australia’s place in a changing global economic and strategic landscape and help make Australia a renewable energy superpower,” stated DFAT.
The public submissions, which are open till August 5, aim at seeking inputs to the roadmap from voices in Australia and India, especially from businesses working in both countries, research centers and academia, members of Indian-Australian communities, India-focused NGOs and civil society organizations, state and territory governments, etc. DFAT said that it would also be conducting consultations in state capitals in Australia and in India.
Fatah hopes US deal will end Israeli aggression on Gaza, West Bank
Palestinian National Liberation Movement (Fatah) has expressed its hope that the ceasefire deal recently proposed by the US will end the ongoing Israeli aggression on the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, the media quoted a Fatah spokesman as saying.
“We hope that US President Joe Biden’s plan will be earnest to stop the aggression against the Gaza Strip and the West Bank,” Fatah spokesman Abd Al-Fattah Doleh told AlQahera News TV channel in a phone call on Sunday. He also hoped Biden’s plan would not reinforce the geographical separation between Gaza and the West Bank, Xinhua news agency reported.
Doleh’s remarks came while Egypt is working with Qatar and the US to mediate a ceasefire between Israel and Gaza-ruling Hamas in Gaza. A meeting between concerned parties is expected to be held in Egypt later on Sunday. The Fatah official said that Israel targets the presence of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) in Gaza and seeks to make the enclave “unfit for life”.
In a joint statement on Saturday, the three mediating countries urged both Israel and Hamas to finalize the ceasefire agreement recently proposed by Washington as a roadmap to end their conflict in Gaza, which has been going on for nearly eight months now. Although Cairo, Doha, and Washington
managed to mediate a week-long Israel-Hamas truce that ended in late November 2023, Israel and Hamas failed to reach another ceasefire agreement after talks in Cairo last month.
Among the points of disagreement were the number and lists of Israeli hostages and Palestinian prisoners to be released under a swap deal, as well as issues regarding Israel’s partial withdrawal from Gaza to allow free movement of Palestinians in the enclave. Israel has launched a large-scale offensive against Hamas in the Gaza Strip since October 7, 2023, after Hamas carried out a surprise attack on southern Israel that killed about 1,200 people.
At least 36,439 Palestinians have been killed and more than 82,627 others injured since then, according to the figures released by the Gaza health authorities.
Netanyahu accepts invitation to address US Congress
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said that he accepted the invitation to address a joint meeting of the US Congress in Washington. In a statement, the Israeli Prime Minister said last week that he plans to speak to both Houses of Congress and “present the truth” about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Netanyahu was invited on Friday in a letter signed by the leaders of the US Senate and House of Representatives, Xinhua news agency reported. Israel’s state-owned Kan TV news reported that Netanyahu’s speech in Washington is expected to take place within the next eight weeks.
Meanwhile, the channel also reported that Israel and Egypt have agreed on reopening the Rafah border crossing between Egypt and the Gaza Strip to transfer humanitarian aid to the Strip.
US President’s son Hunter Biden goes on trial on gun charges
By: Yashwant Raj
US President Joe Biden’s son Hunter Biden is set to go on trial on Monday on three charges related to firearms possession, facing 25 years of maximum jail term if convicted.
Hunter Biden’s trial comes just days after a Manhattan jury found former President Donald Trump guilty on all 34 charges of falsifying business records to show payment of hush money to an adult film star as legal expenses. Trump faces four years of maximum punishment for each charge, but he is more likely to get away with a lesser punishment, such as community service, or home confinement, or supervised release.
The trial is expected to last two weeks. He is charged with two counts of providing false information on a form he filled when he bought a Colt Cobra revolver in 2018. He had wrongly said he was not using narcotics at the time, which he said at the time in an autobiography. The third count charges him with using narcotics while in possession of a firearm. He has pleaded not guilty.
Hunter Biden is being prosecuted by David Weiss, a US attorney appointed by Trump and elevated to special prosecutor by the Biden administration at his request so as to be able to conduct the case independently. Hunter Biden also faces tax-related charges in California.

Biden imposes sweeping asylum ban at USMexico border
U.S. President Joe Biden on Tuesday instituted a broad asylum ban on migrants caught illegally crossing the U.S.-Mexico border, a major enforcement move in the run-up to November elections that will decide control of the White House.
Migrants caught crossing illegally could be quickly deported or turned back to Mexico under the measure, which will take effect just after midnight. There will be exceptions for unaccompanied children, people who face serious medical or safety threats and victims of trafficking, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security said.
Biden, a Democrat, has toughened his approach to border security as immigration has emerged as a top issue for Americans in the run-up to Nov. 5 elections where he will face Republican Donald Trump, who made a hardline stance on immigration a centerpiece of his administration and vowed a wideranging crackdown if reelected.
Biden took office in 2021 vowing to reverse some of Trump’s restrictive immigration policies but grappled with record levels of migrants caught crossing illegally, a trend that has strained U.S. border authorities and cities receiving new arrivals. During a White House press conference explaining the proclamation, Biden said asylum access would remain available to migrants who registered for an appointment using an app known as CBP One or used other legal pathways instead of crossing illegally.
“This action will help us gain control of our border and restore order into the process,” Biden said. “This ban will remain in place until the number of people trying to enter illegally is reduced to a level that our system can effectively manage.”

More than 34 million Americans are preparing for extreme temperatures, as a heat dome descends on the western part of the US this week. Forecasters are warning residents in California, Nevada, Utah and Arizona to prepare for temperatures to reach around 40C (104F) by Friday.
Later in the week, extreme temperatures are expected to reach parts of the Pacific Northwest.
Similar temperatures last year killed at least a dozen people in the American Southwest. The US Border Patrol in Texas says four migrants attempting to enter the US died over the weekend died due to heatrelated illnesses.
Judge orders Steve Bannon to begin four-month contempt sentence by 1 July
IndoUS Tribune Newsdesk
Steve Bannon, the rightwing podcaster and a Donald Trump cheerleader, has been ordered to surrender to authorities by 1 July to begin a four-month prison sentence for contempt of Congress.
The order was issued by US district judge Carl Nichols – who was appointed to the bench by Trump – after he accepted prosecutors’ argument that Bannon should serve his sentence following the rejection of his appeal last month by a three-judge panel.
Bannon had fought the move to incarcerate him, contending that he was ready to go to the full US court of appeals and even to the supreme court to contest his conviction. He was convicted in 2022 of two counts of contempt of Congress –one for failing to appear for a deposition of the House of Representatives’ select committee investigating the 6 January 2021 insurrection; and the other for refusing to turn over documents related to his role in Trump’s attempt to overturn his 2020 presidential election loss to Joe Biden.
Another close Trump ally, the former White House trade adviser Peter Navarro, is already serving a four-month term in a minimum-security facility in Florida after being convicted of a similar contempt offense relating to the January 6 inquiry. He has reportedly spent the time inside
putting the finishing touches to a book on a future Trump administration’s agenda.
Being imprisoned from next month would mean Bannon missing the Republican national convention, which starts on 15 July and at which Trump is due to be officially nominated as the GOP presidential candidate. It may also result in the suspension of his War Room podcast, which regularly features
British tech magnate Mike Lynch acquitted at US fraud trial
Autonomy founder Mike Lynch was acquitted of fraud on Thursday by a jury in San Francisco, a major win for the entrepreneur who has been dogged by legal problems since the disastrous sale of his company to Hewlett-Packard for $11 billion in 2011.
Representatives for Lynch and U.S. prosecutors said Lynch was acquitted on all 15 charges -- one count of conspiracy, and 14 counts of wire fraud, each connected to specific transactions or communications. Former Autonomy finance executive Stephen Chamberlain, who faced the same charges at trial alongside Lynch, was also acquitted on all counts, the Lynch representative said.
The trial, where prosecutors said Lynch and Chamberlain schemed to inflate Autonomy’s revenue, was the latest chapter in a legal saga stemming from the failed deal. The Autonomy sale was one of the biggest British tech deals at the time but quickly went sour, with HP writing down Autonomy’s value by $8.8 billion within a year.
“I am elated with today’s verdict,” Lynch, who was once compared with Apple cofounder Steve Jobs and Microsoft cofounder Bill Gates, said in a statement. “I am looking forward to returning to the
UK and getting back to what I love most: my family and innovating in my field.”
At the trial, which lasted three months, jurors heard from more than 30 government witnesses including Leo Apotheker, the former HP CEO who was fired weeks after the Autonomy deal was announced. Lynch also took the stand in his own defense at the trial, denying wrongdoing and telling jurors that HP botched the two companies’ integration.
interviews with figures on the right of the political spectrum.
Bannon, 70, has previously described himself as a “Leninist”, in reference to Vladimir Ilyich Lenin, leader of the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution in Russia, whose career in revolutionary politics included serving a year in prison after being arrested for sedition against the country’s Tsarist regime before being exiled for three years in Siberia.
Biden says he would not pardon his own son if convicted
US President Joe Biden has said he would not pardon his son Hunter in the event of a conviction in his ongoing criminal trial for unauthorized gun possession. In a TV interview, Biden was asked whether he was prepared to accept the outcome of his son’s trial in the state of Delaware. He answered with a curt “yes.”
News anchor David Muir asked whether Biden would also rule out a pardon, to which the US president replied in the affirmative, according to a pre-released statement from ABC News.
Hunter Biden is accused of making false statements when purchasing weapons in October 2018 and concealing his drug addiction at the time. If convicted, he faces up to 25 years in prison.
However, it is unclear how severe a sentence the judge responsible would hand down, as Hunter Biden has no criminal record. The US president’s statements are in contrast to the behavior of his predecessor Donald Trump, who is facing several criminal trials and has already indicated that he would reverse their sentences if he wins the election.

9 charged, including warden, in connection with 2 Wisconsin inmate deaths
Nine Wisconsin correctional officials, including the warden of a maximumsecurity prison, have been arrested on charges connected with the deaths of two inmates that the sheriff said showed a “blatant disregard for the safety of human beings.”
Dodge County Sheriff Dale Schmidt said that one of the two inmates at the Waupun Correctional Institution was dead in his cell for 12 hours before his death was discovered — and before that, even after he had collapsed, staff skipped rounds to check on his health and a nurse decided without visiting him that no medical entry was needed. Another inmate died of dehydration and malnutrition, and an investigation showed that officers at his restricted unit failed to feed him nine out of 12 meals over the course of four days, Schmidt said. “These investigations have shown a blatant disregard for the safety of human beings, and arrests must be made and have been made,” Dodge County Sheriff Dale Schmidt said at a news conference.
Two other inmates also died, one by suicide and one by fentanyl toxicity, the sheriff said, but the conduct did not rise to the level of criminal activity. The nine charged include Randall Hepp, warden at the Waupun Correctional Institution, located in the city of the same name around 55 miles northwest of Milwaukee.
Hepp and three other correctional officers — Jamall Russel, Sarah Ransbottom and Jeramie Chalker — were arrested on a count of misconduct in public office, the sheriff’s office said.
SpaceX soars through new milestones in test flight of the most powerful rocket ever built
SpaceX’s Starship, the most powerful launch vehicle ever built launched Thursday and achieved key objectives laid out for its fourth test flight that demonstrated the vehicle’s reusability. The highly anticipated event was the company’s second uncrewed test of 2024.
Launch occurred from the private Starbase facility in Boca Chica, Texas, and the company streamed live coverage on X, formerly known as Twitter, drawing millions of viewers. The Starship launch system includes the upper Starship spacecraft and a rocket booster known as the Super Heavy. Of the rocket’s 33 engines, 32 lit during launch, according to the SpaceX broadcast. The vehicle soared through multiple milestones during Thursday’s test flight, including the survival of the Starship capsule upon reentry during peak heating in Earth’s atmosphere and splashdown of both the capsule and booster.
The Starship spacecraft is coated in about 18,000 lightweight, ceramic hexagonal tiles, which are designed to protect the vehicle during reentry.
Boeing CEO to testify before US Senate panel on June 18
Outgoing Boeing CEO Dave Calhoun will testify before a U.S. Senate panel on June 18 after a series of incidents raised concerns about safety and quality, and led regulators to cap the planemaker’s production of its best-selling 737 MAX.
Senator Richard Blumenthal, who chairs the Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, said Calhoun would testify about a series of issues. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in February barred Boeing from boosting 737 MAX production after a door panel blew out during a Jan. 5 flight on a 737 MAX 9 operated by Alaska Airlines.
Blumenthal said after two fatal crashes in 2018 and 2019 that killed 346 people, “Boeing made a promise to overhaul its safety practices and culture. That promise proved empty, and the American people deserve an explanation.”
Calhoun has said he will leave by the end of the year as part of a broader management shakeup, as Boeing faces multiple government investigations and pressure from investors and airlines to find a new CEO. The longstanding Boeing board member and General Electric veteran took the helm of the company in 2020 after the ousting of his scandal-tinged predecessor.
During a hearing in April before Blumenthal’s committee, a Boeing engineer
testified the company took dangerous manufacturing shortcuts with certain planes and sidelined him when he raised safety concerns, claims the company disputes.
Blumenthal said Calhoun’s testimony was a necessary step to meaningfully address Boeing’s failures, regain public trust and restore its central role in the American economy and national defense.
The U.S. Justice Department said last month Boeing had breached its obligations in a 2021 agreement that shielded the planemaker from criminal prosecution over the fatal 737 MAX crashes. Boeing faces a criminal probe into the Alaska Airlines incident as well. Boeing has said it believes it has honored the terms of the deferred prosecution agreement.
US envoy meets with Egyptian ministers in Cairo over Gaza crisis
White House Coordinator for the Middle East and North Africa Brett McGurk has held separate meetings with Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry and Defense Minister Mohamed Zaki here to discuss the latest developments of the crisis in the Gaza Strip.
During McGurk’s meeting with Shoukry on Thursday, they discussed the recent US proposal for an Israel-Hamas ceasefire deal, including an exchange of Palestinian prisoners and Israeli hostages, highlighting the joint mediation efforts made by Egypt, Qatar, and the United States in this regard, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
The ceasefire deal was proposed in late May by US President Joe Biden to end the conflict between Israel and Gaza-ruling Hamas, which has been going on over the past eight months.
Shoukry and McGurk stressed the importance for the two sides to reach a deal “as soon as possible” and take “serious and real steps” to ensure a ceasefire in the entire Gaza Strip, Xinhua news agency reported.
McGurk’s meeting with the Egyptian Defense Minister touched on “the current regional developments in light of the continuation of (Israeli) military operations inside the Gaza Strip and their extremely difficult humanitarian repercussions”, said a
The Israeli army launched a military operation on Gaza’s southernmost city of Rafah in early May and took control of the Palestinian side of the Rafah border crossing, a lifeline for delivering humanitarian aid from Egypt to Gaza. The move led to the closure of the vital crossing, with Egypt demanding Israeli withdrawal from its Palestinian side.
McGurk and Zaki discussed “the efforts made in light of the current initiatives to cease fire, open the crossings, and intensify the entry of humanitarian aid to the residents of the strip,” according to the Egyptian army’s statement.
The US, Egypt, and Qatar managed to mediate a week-long Israel-Hamas truce in late November 2023. Israel and Hamas failed to reach another ceasefire agreement after talks in Cairo last month.
Bird flu outbreak reported in Minnesota dairy herd, the
state’s first
The ongoing U.S. outbreak of avian flu in dairy cattle reached Minnesota on Thursday as the state announced its first infected herd. More than 80 dairy herds have been infected with the virus across 11 states since late March, and three dairy workers have tested positive for the virus.
The Minnesota Board of Animal Health said the farmer of the affected herd reported more than 40 cows with signs of fever. The animals were tested on Monday and the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) National Veterinary Services Laboratories confirmed the positive test on Wednesday night. The animals are recovering, said Brian Hoefs, the state veterinarian. Milk from the sick cows was disposed of, and the state Board of Animal Health has quarantined the entire herd for 30 days to reduce the risk of the virus spreading off the farm, the agency said.
After 30 days from the last positive test result, the herd can be retested to be released from quarantine, the agency added.
The other states that have reported infected herds so far are Colorado, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, South Dakota and Texas. Dairy cows with avian flu have died or been slaughtered by farmers after not recovering, Reuters reporting found. The USDA said that the vast majority of cows recover from the illness.
Pro-Palestinian protesters
arrested and suspended after barricading inside Stanford University president’s office
Thirteen pro-Palestinian protesters at Stanford University were arrested after they briefly took over the varsity president’s office, authorities said. In the latest campus action calling for divestment from Israel, students and alumni entered President Richard Saller’s office on early Wednesday morning, according to the pro-Palestinian group’s spokesperson.
They vowed to “remain inside the building and are refusing to leave until their demands are met”, the spokesperson said in a statement. After several hours, the building was back in university control after campus police and Santa Clara County Sheriff’s deputies took action, officials were quoted as saying by Xinhua news agency
“We are appalled and deeply saddened by the actions that occurred on our campus earlier today,” according to a joint statement from the university president and Jenny Martinez, Stanford provost. A campus police officer was injured during the clashes, the Stanford administrators said.
Those who are students “will be immediately suspended” and seniors “will not be allowed to graduate,” they added. Wednesday was the last day of classes for the spring term. The Stanford Commencement Weekend is set for June 13 to 16.

Pakistan minister proposes Kartarpur-like corridor in Sindh to allow Hindus and Jains to visit religious sites
Aprovincial minister in Pakistan has proposed the idea of opening a Kartarpur-like religious corridor in the Sindh province areas, bordering India, to allow Hindus and Jains to visit their historical religious sites in this country.
Sindh Tourism Minister Zulfiqar Ali Shah made the proposal on Wednesday while addressing an event in Dubai related to the promotion of tourism in Sindh province, where the majority of Pakistan’s Hindu population is settled.
Shah said the corridor could be built in Umarkot and Nagarparkar. Umarkot is home to Shri Shiv Mandir, which is considered one of the oldest Hindu temples in Sindh. Some people believe it was constructed more than 2,000 years ago. There are also numerous abandoned Jain temples in Nagarparkar, which has a large Hindu population.
He said there were scores of Hindus and Jains who wanted to visit the religious sites in Sindh.
The Pakistan and Indian governments had until August 2019 run a train service, The Thar Express, that connected the border towns of Munabao in Rajasthan to Khokhrapar in Sindh province.
The service, after remaining closed for many years, was reopened in 2006 during the tenure of late President Pervaz Musharraf. It was the only rail link between Sindh and Rajasthan.
Celebrated Indian singer Sonu Nigam awarded Honorary Fellowship in UK for worldwide impact in music
Bollywood singer Sonu Nigam, who was in the UK for a concert series, has been awarded an Honorary Fellowship by a leading Indian diaspora students’ organization for his worldwide impact in the field of music. The National Indian Students and Alumni Union (NISAU) UK conferred Nigam with the fellowship during his packed performance at Wembley Arena in London last weekend. It was presented on stage by veteran British Indian Labour MP Virendra Sharma and Professor Rachel Dwyer, Emeritus Professor of Indian Culture at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS).

that resonates deeply with what we stand for at NISAU,” said NISAU UK Chair Sanam Arora in her speech at the ceremony.
“We strive to empower, to lead, and to inspire, principles you embody through your actions every day. You are not just a musical icon, but a bridge uniting hearts, minds and nations through music; and fostering community through your philanthropic efforts be it your fight for performers’ rights or your championship of gender equality for instance through launching the world’s first transgender band,” she said.
The Honorary Fellowship, previously conferred upon actor Shabana Azmi, writer Javed Akhtar and spiritualist Sri Sri Ravi Shankar among others, acknowledges individuals who significantly impact Indian cultural exchange, education, and social improvement on a world stage.
Nine-year-old Indian-origin girl ‘fighting for her life’ after drive-by shooting in London
Nine-year-old girl, yet to be formally identified but believed to be from the southern Indian state of Kerala, is in a critical condition in hospital “fighting for her life” after suffering a gunshot wound in a driveby shooting from a motorbike in east London.
The Metropolitan Police said the girl was inside a restaurant in the Kingsland High Street area of Hackney having dinner with her family when the shooting occurred on Wednesday night. Three as yet unnamed men, aged 26, 37 and 42, who were sitting outside the restaurant were taken to hospital for treatment for gunshot wounds and their conditions are said to be “stable, but one potentially faces life changing injuries”.
“A nine-year-old girl, who was inside the restaurant having dinner with her family, suffered a gunshot wound and she remains in hospital in a critical condition. Our thoughts are with her and her family and they are being supported by specialist officers,” Met
Police Detective Chief Superintendent (DCS) James Conway said in a statement.
“We do not believe that the girl and the men injured were known to each other. As with any child, she was an innocent victim of the indiscriminate nature of gun crime...Events such as
Indian-origin astronaut Sunita Williams flies to space for the third time
Indian-origin astronaut Sunita Williams flew to space for the third time on Wednesday along with a colleague, scripting history as the first members aboard Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft to the International Space Station. Boeing’s Crew Flight Test mission carrying Williams, and Butch Wilmore lifted off from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida after multiple delays. Williams, 58, is the pilot for the flight test while Wilmore, 61, is the commander of the mission. Williams also made history as the first woman to embark on such a mission. And it won’t be her first entry in the history books.
In 2012, during a prior trip to the International Space Station, Williams became the first person to finish a triathlon in space, during which she simulated swimming using a weightlifting machine and ran on a treadmill while strapped in by a harness so she wouldn’t float away. That came after she ran the Boston Marathon from the space station in 2007. Williams received her commission as an Ensign in the United States Navy from the United States Naval Academy in May 1987. Williams was selected as an astronaut by NASA in 1998 and is a veteran of two space missions, Expeditions 14/15 in 2006 and 32/33 and 2012.
Indian-American man from Texas charged with federal hate crime against Sikh nonprofit employees
these are rarely spontaneous. Someone knows who is responsible for this shooting that has left a little girl fighting for her life,” he said, appealing for information to assist the police investigation.
Meanwhile, reports emanating from within London’s Malayali community have named the girl as Lissel Maria, daughter of Vinaya and Ajeesh of Gothuruthu in Kochi. They were out having a meal in a busy east London neighborhood when the sudden shooting, believed to be gang related, sent shockwaves within the community.
The investigation is at an early stage and the police said they are keeping an open mind as to the motive. Investigators are keen to identify other witnesses who were in the area around the scene at the time of the shooting and have appealed for footage from a phone or other device.
To reassure and support the local community, the police said there will be a significant police presence in this area, including armed officers, as part of efforts to tackle violence and gun crime.
An Indian-American man from Texas has been charged with a federal hate crime and is accused of issuing interstate threats against employees of a Sikh nonprofit organization. Bhushan Athale, 48, faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison for interfering with federally protected activities by threatening to use a dangerous weapon, a statement by the Department of Justice said. He also faces a maximum penalty of five years in prison for sending an interstate threat. Both charges also carry a penalty of up to USD 250,000, the statement said. According to the complaint lodged on September 17, 2022, Athale allegedly called the phone number of an organization that advocates for the civil rights of Sikh individuals within the United States.
He allegedly left seven voicemails expressing “extreme hatred” towards Sikh individuals working at the organization and threatening to “injure or kill these individuals with a razor”, the statement said. Athale’s voicemails are alleged to have “violent imagery and obscenity, and contained “references to places, people and tenets that are particularly significant within the Sikh religion”, it said.

Indian-origin sepsis survivor hopes to make history in UK general election
An Indian-origin Labor Party candidate is drawing upon a very personal experience of surviving sepsis with the country’s statefunded healthcare service in her campaign for the July 4 general election to be elected from her hometown in Leicestershire, East Midlands.
Hajira Piranie, whose mother hails from Maharashtra and her grandparents on her father’s side from Gujarat, is busy campaigning to be elected as a first-time member of Parliament from the Harborough, Oadby & Wigston constituency in southern Leicestershire.
One of her campaign themes is to highlight that safeguarding the National Health Service (NHS) is more than just a slogan for her and that only a Labor Partyled government, which first created the NHS 76 years ago, can tackle the waiting lists faced by patients.
“In 2019, I survived sepsis and it was a difficult time as my lungs had collapsed and I was on a ventilator fighting for my life,” said Piranie.
“
I have been campaigning for the UK Sepsis Trust as their Ambassador and raising awareness, specifically within our South
4 Indian students drown in Volkhov river near St Petersburg in Russia
Four Indian students who were studying at a university 200 km from St Petersburg in Russia drowned in Volkhov river after getting caught in strong currents even though they were in waist deep water and sober, reported locals at the site of the accident. A girl student was saved with the help of a life buoy from a passing ship while another boy swam back on his own.
All the five students involved in the accident belong to Jalgaon district of
Maharashtra and were between 18 and 20 years old.
The students were from the Yaroslav-theWise Novgorod State University located on Volkhov river which was described as a “crazy river’’ by a Russian diplomat.
The MEA said its consulate in St. Petersburg remains in contact with the university and is providing all possible assistance. Local emergency services have so far recovered two dead bodies from the Volkhov river. The search for the remaining two missing students continues.
Asian communities, on picking up on the symptoms of sepsis. It is a big reason why I’m a Labor candidate because it is the party that created the NHS and we are the only party that can save it and get people those appointments when they need it to save their lives,” she said.
As a mother of a three-year-old, in her late 20s, Piranie has also been actively involved with the work of a charity in Maharashtra with links in the UK that supports victims of human trafficking.
“As a young mother, it’s about creating a better future for my son and the next generation. This ties in with my Indian heritage because as Indians, we’re proud to be the voice for those who don’t feel like they have a voice,” she said.
“I’m deeply connected to my Indian roots. I visit India very often to visit my family there and I also work with organizations there like Kshamta, which is linked to a
charity here called Kindled Spirit where I’m a trustee, helping survivors of human trafficking in Mumbai. I’m so proud that the values that have been instilled in me from my family have brought me here as a British Indian parliamentary candidate,” she shared.
Asked about how confident she feels about overturning the Conservative Party hold in her constituency, Piranie reiterated the Labor line of “change” and welcomed the snap summer election as an opportunity to convince the electorate.
She added, “It’s important that we use our voice to affect change. We’ve had 14 years of chaos. It’s time for the Labor Party to bring stability back into our country.
“If I’m elected, it would be my job to listen and be an accessible, visible member of Parliament, not just at election time but throughout.”
Piranie is among several Indian-origin candidates contesting the July 4 general election, with both the main parties finalizing their candidate lists for 650 constituencies across the UK.
According to a forecast by the British Future think tank, the next Parliament in Westminster is set to be the most diverse yet – expected to increase the current figure of over a dozen MPs of Indian heritage elected to the House of Commons.
Indian immigration agent sentenced to three years in jail for international students fraud case in Canada
An Indian immigration agent at the center of a scam to cheat students from India by issuing fake college admission to procure Canadian visas has been sentenced to three years in jail after he pleaded guilty before a court in Vancouver to immigration offenses, according to a media report.
Brijesh Mishra, 37, was arrested after a Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA) investigation tied him to dozens of fraudulent acceptance letters for Canadian colleges and universities that were provided to prospective international students from India between 2016 and 2020.
Dressed in a red jumpsuit, Mishra on Wednesday stood inside a Vancouver courtroom and apologized for a slew of Canadian immigration offenses.
Mishra pleaded guilty to three charges related to Canada’s Immigration and Refugee Protection Act, including misrepresentation and communicating false information, CBC News reported.
“I’m sorry,” he told the courtroom. “I cannot change the past, but I can make sure I do not do it again in the future.”
Mishra was arrested in Surrey, British
Columbia,
for three years in prison, to which the judge agreed was sufficient.
Mishra’s time in custody since his 2023 arrest counts as time served, meaning he will serve an additional 19 months. After serving his sentence in Canada, Mishra is expected to be deported to India where he faces further criminal charges, including a human smuggling offense. The maximum penalty for that offense is death.

Monsoon advances to Karnataka, Maharashtra & Telangana
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday said that the monsoon has further advanced into most parts of Karnataka and some more parts of Maharashtra, Telangana and coastal Andhra Pradesh.
According to the IMD, conditions are favorable for further advance of monsoon into remaining parts of Karnataka and coastal Andhra Pradesh, some more parts of Maharashtra (including Mumbai), Telangana, some parts of Chhattisgarh and Odisha, and some more parts of the Arabian Sea and West Bengal during the next 3-4 days.
Rainfall is likely to increase in Maharashtra and coastal Karnataka with heavy to very heavy rainfall from June 8, the IMD said. “Monis and Kasim displayed the same Aadhaar card number with the individual’s photo. They made these forged documents under a conspiracy and used them as genuine and Kasim also impersonated Monis,” read the FIR. The FIR further said that all three workers are working under the contractor
Sahnawaj Alam who hired them.
“Furthermore, it seems to be either one or both Aadhaar cards of Monis and Kasim were forged,” it said. They were hired for construction work in the MP lounge.
Rahul Gandhi conspiring to mislead investors: Piyush Goyal’s retort to ‘stock markets scam’ charge
Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal replied sharply to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s ‘biggest stock market scam’ charge on Thursday, saying the latter was conspiring to mislead the investors as he and his party were not able to ‘digest’ the 2024 poll debacle and were ‘anxious’ over formation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government for the record third time.
Holding a presser soon after Rahul Gandhi’s charge, Piyush Goyal said that the absurd allegations by the Congress leader showed that he had not recovered from the disappointment of defeat in the Lok Sabha elections.
He further said, “Rahul Gandhi looks worried about the Modi government coming into power for a third term. That is why he is trying to confuse foreign and domestic investors with his statements.”
Rahul Gandhi along with other Congress leaders held a press conference on Thursday and demanded a Joint Parliamentary committee (JPC) probe into the tailspin in
markets while terming it as the ‘biggest stock market scam’.
Piyush Goyal highlighted that India has become the fifth-largest economy in the world and is slated to become the third-largest in the third term of the Modi government. He said that plenty of retail investors benefited due to the increase in market cap and this has left the Opposition unnerved and apparently prompting it to make baseless and unwarranted charges. The Union Minister also questioned the stance of the Congress on its slew of poll promises while mentioning that many women were gathering outside its offices to seek financial assistance, as promised during the campaign.
Pro-Khalistan slogans in Golden Temple mark Operation Bluestar anniversary
Carrying posters of Jarnail Singh Bhindrawale, radicals on Thursday raised pro-Khalistan slogans in the premises of the Golden Temple here to mark the 40th anniversary of Operation Bluestar. Operation Bluestar was a military action ordered by late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi to flush out militants led by Bhindrawale holed up in the Golden Temple complex.
Operation Bluestar was carried out between June 1 and 8, 1984, and claimed several lives and left the shrine and complex damaged.
Supporters of Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) led by its president Simranjit Singh Maan, who lost the Sangrur Lok Sabha seat, were among those who carried the posters of Bhindranwale and the damaged structure of Akal Takht, raised proKhalistan slogans.
On several occasions, emotions ran high after seeing a glimpse of the bullet-riddled ‘saroop’ of Sri Guru Granth Sahib put on display close to Akal Takht. The ‘saroop’ was ‘injured’ during Operation Bluestar. Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Raghubir Singh read out the customary message.
Appealing to the Sikhs to be united against the anti-Sikh forces, the Jathedar mentioned how Sikhs fought for their rights and against atrocities by the rulers of the Mughal era and Operation Bluestar in the Golden Temple complex. Keeping in view of the anniversary of Operation Bluestar, Punjab Police beefed up security across the state to ensure peaceful observance of the day.

Delhi court denies interim bail to CM Kejriwal
ADelhi court on Wednesday dismissed a plea filed by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal seeking seven days interim bail on medical grounds, in connection with a money laundering case related to the alleged excise policy scam. Special Judge Kaveri Baweja of the Rouse Avenue Court will now hear the matter on his regular bail plea on Friday.
The court indicated that directions had been issued for specific diagnostic tests for Kejriwal, who appeared via video conference from Tihar Jail. Judge Baweja remanded Kejriwal to judicial custody till June 19. Solicitor General (SG), Tushar Mehta, and Additional Solicitor General (ASG), S.V. Raju, representing the Enforcement Directorate (ED) had last time argued that the bail plea was not maintainable as they criticized CM Kejriwal’s conduct, citing ‘misuse’ of interim bail for campaigning.
Kejriwal’s defense led by senior advocate N. Hariharan had claimed that the interim bail plea was necessitated due to his aggravated diabetes and other health issues. The ED had contended that Kejriwal’s medical tests could be conducted in jail as it accused him of trying to evade surrender.
Shahjahan sold land owned by Sandeshkhali locals through Power of Attorney acquired forcefully: ED charge sheet
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has accessed crucial documents on how suspended Trinamool Congress leader Sheikh Shahjahan sold land owned by the people of Sandeshkhali. Sources said that Shahjahan’s men used to forcefully get signatures of land owners on the Power of Attorney authorizing Sheikh Shahjahan to sell that land to a third party.
This was over and above the other modus operandi adopted by them for grabbing land by rendering it useless after flooding it with saline water. As per the ED’s findings, once Sheikh Shahjahan got the Power of Attorney, the land was sold to a third party at premium prices while the actual land owner was given a paltry sum. Sources added that the ED mentioned this Power of Attorney modus operandi adopted by Shahjahan in the charge sheet field at a special court of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) in Kolkata recently.
ED officials have tracked another source of income of Shahjahan where fisheries owners were compelled to sell the fish, mainly prawn and shrimp, produced at their farms only to agents chosen by the leader at a paltry price fixed by him. Later, the same fish products were sold at a premium in the export market.
In its charge sheet filed last month, the ED accused Shahjahan of collecting Rs 261 crore through illegal land grabbing in Sandeshkhali.
Health Ministry reviews States and UTs preparedness to tackle heat wave, hospital fire
The Union Health Ministry on Thursday conducted a virtual meeting with States/UTs to assess the preparedness for the ongoing heat wave conditions in the country. The meeting led by Atul Goel, Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), also assessed fire and electrical safety measures adopted by various healthcare facilities across the states and UTs.
The India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) long-range outlook for June reveals above-normal monthly maximum temperatures over most parts of the country, except in southern peninsular India, where normal to below-normal temperatures are most likely.
During June, above-normal heat wave days are likely over most areas of Northwest India and adjoining parts of Central India. In the meeting, states were urged to implement a heat health action plan; disseminate early warnings of heat waves issued by IMD; assess the preparedness of all healthcare facilities and ambulance preparedness for prevention and management of heat-related illnesses (HRI); dedicate heat stroke room at all healthcare facilities; issue health advisories.
The states have also been asked to sensitize and do capacity building of medical officers and health care staff of health facilities on
HRI symptoms, case identification, clinical management, emergency cooling, and surveillance reporting.
Further, given several fire incidents at hospitals, the ministry called on states to conduct regular preventive fire risk assessment drills to identify potentially vulnerable areas; and implement appropriate fire prevention measures, such as proper storage of flammable materials and regular and optimal preventive maintenance of electrical circuits and systems.
Besides, the ministry asked the states to provide staff training on fire safety protocols, evacuation procedures, and use of firefighting equipment; installation and optimum maintenance of fire detection and suppression systems, including smoke alarms, fire extinguishers, and sprinklers.
The meeting also asked the states to establish an emergency response plan with SOPs for evacuating patients, staff, and visitors in the

Delhi has also been issued directives and Standard Operating Procedures for firefighting systems to all government and private hospitals, the ministry said.
Porsche case: Minor accused’s remand to juvenile home extended by a week
The Pune Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) on Wednesday extended the remand of a minor -- accused of killing two techies in his Porsche car on May 19 in an allegedly drunken state -- to an observation facility by a week till June 12. The 17-year-old boy was presented before the JJB after his previous remand of 15 days ended, and the police sought a further extension of 14 days.
In the same case, a Pune Sessions Judge V.R. Kachare extended by five days the police remand of the boy’s parents, two senior doctors and a peon of the Sassoon General Hospital -- all accused in a separate case involving the tinkering of the accused minor’s blood sample. Their police custody ended on Wednesday, and they were presented before the court, which granted an extension of police custody till June 10.
Earlier, a Pune court had sent the boy’s father, builder Vishal S. Agarwal and grandfather Surendrakumar B. Agarwal to judicial custody for allegedly abducting the family driver, pressuring, bribing and threatening him to take the blame for the accident to save their son.
As the investigation progressed in the case in the past fortnight, several startling details emerged and the involvement of many others, including the boy’s mother Shivani V. Agarwal, came to the fore.

Musk’s Starlink gets preliminary approval from Sri Lanka
Elon Musk’s satellite-based internet service provider Starlink on Thursday received preliminary approval from Sri Lanka to provide internet service in the island nation. The approval process was fast-tracked after Musk met with Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe last month in Indonesia on the sidelines of the 10th World Water Forum.
Wickremesinghe had discussed the implementation of Starlink service in Sri Lanka with the tech billionaire and also mentioned that he is committed to fasttracking the application process to connect the country with the global Starlink network.
Last month, Musk launched Starlink in Indonesia with the aim to improve access in remote parts of the archipelago. In addition, a day after launching the service in Indonesia, the Tesla CEO announced the availability of Starlink in Fiji.
PM claims assassination attempt not by ‘a lone madman’
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has said here that he did not believe last month’s assassination attempt against him was carried out by a lone madman. The Prime Minister on Wednesday claimed that an activist belonging to the Slovak opposition had tried to assassinate him because of his political views.
Fico also noted he expects to return to work at the end of June or the start of July, if his recovery goes smoothly. He said he bore no hatred towards the 71-year-old attacker and would not take legal action against him.
Fico underwent two operations after the attack and was discharged from the Roosevelt Hospital in Banska Bystrica at the end of last month. He is currently in outpatient care at Saint Michael’s Hospital in Bratislava.
South Korea suspends military agreement with North Korea after trash-filled balloon campaign
The National Security Council (NSC), on Monday, decided to suspend the 2018 inter-Korean reduction pact until mutual trust is restored in response to North Korea’s massive sending of trash-carrying balloons into South Korea.
The North has sent nearly 1,000 balloons carrying trash into the South since Thursday in what it said was a “tit-for-tat campaign” against South Korean activists sending balloons carrying propaganda leaflets denouncing the North’s regime. No human casualties were reported, but some balloons caused property damage, such as a broken windshield.
The NSC meeting, presided over by Deputy Principal National Security Adviser Kim Tae-hyo, concluded that North Korea’s recent provocations have caused harm and threats to South Korean citizens and negatively impacted the military’s readiness posture.
“This measure will enable military training near the Military Demarcation Line, which has been restricted by the agreement, and allow for more adequate and immediate responses to North Korean provocations. The government will take all necessary measures to protect the lives and safety of our citizens,” the office said.
On Sunday, National Security Adviser Chang Ho-jin said that the government would take “unbearable” measures against North Korea in response to its sending of
trash balloons and continued jamming of GPS signals last week. It raised speculation over resuming propaganda campaigns via loudspeakers along the border.
Hours after the warning, North Korea said it would temporarily stop sending trash-carrying balloons across the border into South Korea, though it also threatened to resume such operations if anti-Pyongyang leaflets are sent from South Korea. The North said that its balloon campaign came purely in response to leaflets sent by South Korean activists.
It would be necessary to nullify a 2018 inter-Korean military agreement, which bans hostile acts between the two Koreas, to resume the frontline broadcasts. The loudspeakers were used to air criticism of the Kim Jongun regime’s human rights abuses, news and K-pop songs, drawing angry responses from Pyongyang. The 2018 agreement, signed to reduce tensions along the border, remains effectively scrapped after the North conducted live-fire artillery drills near the western border islands in January.
Businesswoman Tomasdottir becomes Iceland’s next president
Businesswoman Halla Tomasdottir became Iceland’s new President, official data from the state media showed. According to the Icelandic national broadcaster RUV, with more than 210,000 votes counted, Tomasdottir led her opponents with 34.3 per cent of the vote, followed by former Prime Minister Katrina Jakobsdottir, who came in second with 25.2 per cent.
RUV reported that voter turnout among the almost 270,000 eligible voters reached 78.83 per cent, marking the highest turnout in a presidential election since 1996. The margins between the two leading candidates were the smallest in the populous south and southwest. This was Tomasdottir’s second attempt at the presidency. In 2016, she was the runnerup when Gudni Johannesson was elected.
US defense chief welcomes South Korea-Japan agreement in Singapore
US Secretary of Defense Lloyd
Austin has welcomed an agreement by Defense Chiefs of South Korea and Japan to take measures to prevent the recurrence of a 2018 maritime spat over Japanese patrol aircraft. South Korean Defense Minister Shin Wonsik and his Japanese counterpart, Minoru Kihara, announced the agreement last week after their talks held on the sidelines of the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, in a deal that could remove a major hindrance to efforts to strengthen bilateral military cooperation between Seoul and Tokyo, Yonhap news agency reported. In a statement, Austin said on Saturday that the deal between South Korea
and Japan would “strengthen their bilateral defense relationship, including measures to support operational safety and lines of communication”.
US
and Japan were set to hold a meeting on the sidelines of the security forum in Singapore. The dispute flared up in December 2018, when a Japanese maritime patrol aircraft made an unusually low-altitude flyby over a South Korean warship. Seoul decried the plane’s approach as a “menacing” flight, while Tokyo has accused the South Korean vessel of having locked its fire-control radar on the plane.
The incident had remained a source of friction for years until Seoul and Tokyo’s Defense Chiefs agreed to begin working-level talks on the issue at the annual security forum held in Singapore last year, in what marked the first defense ministerial talks between Seoul and Tokyo since November 2019.

France to supply Mirage warplanes to Ukraine, says Macron
France will supply Mirage warplanes to Ukraine and train their soldiers, French President Emmanuel Macron has said in an interview with French media.
“We will launch a new cooperation and transfer Mirage 2000-5s,” Macron said on Thursday evening. The French leader also promised to train a whole Ukrainian battalion of 4,500 troops, to be deployed on the battlefield. He said the delivery of French fighter jets “is not a factor of escalation” and promised, “these weapons will not be used to bomb civilians”. Additionally, Macron did not exclude the possibility of sending military instructors to Ukraine.
“There should be no taboo on this subject,” he said in the interview. Mirage 2000 is a French multi-role, singleengine, fourth-generation jet fighter, manufactured by Dassault Aviation.
Afghanistan restores 11 historical sites
Eleven historical sites are being repaired and reconstructed in Afghanistan’s southern and eastern regions, an official with the country’s Ministry of Information and Culture said.
“Two projects are in the southern Kandahar province and nine in the western Herat province, where recent earthquakes have damaged or endangered them (historical sites). Restoration work on these sites is ongoing,” local media outlet TOLOnews quoted Khubaib Ghufran, spokesman of the ministry, as saying on Wednesday.
According to Ghufran, work will begin on ten projects after financial resources and necessary facilities are determined, reports Xinhua news agency. Recent flash floods and earthquakes have affected historical sites in most parts of Afghanistan, especially in the west and north.
At the end of February, Macron suggested European nations should send troops to Ukraine during a meeting in Paris but many other European countries, including Germany, Britain, Spain, and Italy, voiced their disagreement.
Following Macron’s remarks in February, Russia warned a direct conflict between NATO and Russia would be inevitable if the alliance sends troops to Ukraine.
Earlier on Thursday, Marcon led a ceremony held at Omaha Beach in Normandy, northern France, to mark the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings. According to a live broadcast by French media BFMTV, some 20 heads of state and government, including US President Joe Biden and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, participated in the event.
En route to France for the ceremony, US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan told reporters on Tuesday that the US will maintain its policy of not sending military advisors to Ukraine. The Normandy landings along the French coast on June 6, 1944, marked an important turning point in World War II, paving the way to the Allied’s victory against Nazi Germany.
Indonesia’s Mount Ibu erupts again
Mount Ibu on Halmahera Island in Indonesia’s North Maluku province erupted, throwing thick black volcanic ash over its peak as high as 7,000 meters, according to the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation.
“The eruption happened at 12:45 p.m. local time, lasting for 373 seconds,” said Mount Ibu Monitoring Officer Axl Roeroe on Sunday. It was the largest eruption since Ibu volcano’s danger status was raised to the highest level on May 16, 2024, added Roeroe. The center has issued a Volcano Observation Notice for Aviation warning with code red for the North Maluku area and its surroundings for aviation security. Authorities also advise residents to stay away from the area 7 km north and 4 km around the active crater.
CIA chief in Doha to lead indirect ceasefire talks between Israel-Hamas
The chief of the American spy agency, Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), William Burns is in the Middle East and will head the indirect peace talks between Israel and Hamas. The CIA chief, who has been instrumental in several back-to-back talks between Hamas and Israel, again reached the Middle East at the behest of Qatar and Egyptian mediators.
The American representative to the Middle East, Brett McGurk is also accompanying William Burns.
Sources in the Israel Defense Minister’s office told IANS that Burns will be meeting Qatar Prime Minister, Mohammed Bin Abdulrahman al-Thani and the Egyptian Intelligence Chief, Major General Abbas Kamel in Doha and
Cairo to work on the ceasefire between the two warring factions.
The top American officials will also reach Israel after meetings in Doha and Cairo. Burns and McGurk will meet Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant.
As per the US-brokered ceasefire deal, the first phase would see the remaining female, elderly and sick Israeli hostages being released for a six-week truce. The second phase would lead to a permanent end to the war. The third phase would lead to the release of the mortal remains of those hostages who died in captivity. During the release of the Israeli hostages, Palestinian prisoners would also be released from Israeli prisons.
US President Joe Biden has stated that after the permanent end to the war, Hamas would not be in power in Gaza.
Iraq arrests vandalizers of American, UK companies in Baghdad
The Iraqi Interior Ministry announced on Tuesday that its forces had arrested some individuals responsible for attacking branches of American and UK companies in the country’s capital, Baghdad. According to a ministry statement, sabotage incidents occurred on May 26, 27, and 30, targeting American restaurants Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) and Chili House, as well as Lee’s, a language education center of the British Cambridge Institute, and American heavy machinery company Caterpillar.
Following an investigation, security forces identified and arrested some of the vandalizers after issuing arrest warrants, the statement noted. It said that the detainees confessed to participating in acts of sabotage alongside other fugitive defendants, stressing that arrest warrants were also issued to hunt other vandalizers.
The Interior Ministry expressed its regret that some of the vandalizers were affiliated with the security services, noting that they carried out the sabotage under the pretext of undermining US interests in Iraq. Responsibility for the attacks remains unclaimed. However, local observers speculate a connection to the ongoing conflict in Gaza, suggesting that the targeted companies could be perceived as representing countries supporting Israel.

Walmart offers bonus program to about 700,000 hourly US store workers
Walmart will pay bonuses to its U.S. hourly store workers, including those at its pharmacy and Vision Center stores, the retailer said on Wednesday, in a move that could boost wages for 700,000 front-line staff.
Both part-time and full-time associates will be eligible for a financial bonus of up to $1,000 a year, the idea for which came from feedback from store workers, Walmart U.S. CEO John Furner said on a call with reporters.
The move follows Walmart’s announcement in January of a bonus redesign for its U.S. store managers, allowing them to earn an annual bonus that’s up to 200% of their salary.
“It’s important that we are competitive on base wages,” Furner said on a call with reporters.
The bonus announcement was made just hours ahead of its annual general meeting where investors voted on seven shareholders proposals, including one urging Walmart to set a compensation policy that provides workers with minimum earnings necessary to meet a family’s basic needs.
An hourly worker has to be with the company for a year to be eligible for the bonus, which is calculated based on stores achieving certain performance targets, Furner added.
Walmart employs about 1.6 million U.S. workers, a majority of whom staff its 4,700 Walmart stores.
Nvidia hits $3 trillion market cap, surpasses Apple on AI booma
Al chipmaker Nvidia has surpassed technology giant Apple to become the world’s second most valuable company, just behind Microsoft. Nvidia’s market cap crossed $3 trillion for the first time due to the AI boom.
Nvidia’s shares rose by 5.16 per cent in the last trading session and the company’s market cap has reached $3.01 trillion. Apple’s shares have increased by 0.78 per cent and its market cap is $3 trillion.
Nvidia’s stock continues to rise due to
increasing Artificial Intelligence (AI) chip demand. In the last year, the company’s stock price surged more than 200 per cent. In the last five, Nvidia stocks generated more than 3,224 per cent return to investors. The company will split its stock 10 for 1 later this month.
Software giant Microsoft is the world’s largest company with a market cap of $3.15 trillion. This is not the first time that Nvidia’s market cap is more than Apple’s. This had happened before in 2002 also. At that time the valuation of both companies was less than $10 billion.
The reason behind the rise in Nvidia’s stock is the increase in the use of AI. Due to this, the demand for chips made by the company has increased all over the world. The company recently decided to design a new AI chip every year. The company’s CEO Jensen Huang has described Generative AI as a new industrial revolution. He had said that Nvidia would play a big role in this transformation.
Apple on the other hand has had to face many challenges since the start of 2024. iPhone sales are declining in China while demands from the European Union remain stable.

The JTFI has underscored the significance of the robust economic relationship between India and Qatar, rooted in shared values, common objectives, and a shared vision for inclusive development, the statement added.
SpaceX will enable anyone to travel to Moon, Mars, says Elon Musk
SpaceX will enable anyone to go to space and even travel to the Moon and Mars, in the future, its CEO Elon Musk said on Saturday.
“Over time, SpaceX will enable anyone to go to space and travel to the moon and Mars,” the tech billionaire posted on X social media platform.
According to him, SpaceX is expected to exceed 90 per cent of all Earth’s payload to low-Earth orbit later this year.
Currently, SpaceX’s rocket Falcon is nearly 80 per cent reusable and its mega rocket ‘Starship’ will eventually take reusability to approximately 100 per cent.
The Starship is likely to land astronauts on the Moon during the crewed Artemis 3 mission in 2026.
The space vehicle has so far had three test flights, and the fourth will take place soon.
According to the company, the fourth flight test of Starship could launch as soon as June 5, pending regulatory approval.
Starship’s third flight test made tremendous strides towards a future of rapidly reliable reusable rockets.
The fourth flight test “turns our focus from achieving orbit to demonstrating the ability to return and reuse Starship and Super Heavy”, the company said.
The primary objectives will be executing a landing burn and soft splashdown in the Gulf of Mexico with the Super Heavy booster, and achieving a controlled entry of Starship.
In the meantime, Musk’s satellite-based internet service Starlink has surpassed 3 million customers in 99 countries.
The affordable service has recently been launched in Indonesia and Fiji.

12 firms fined $7.5 million for price fixing over Samsung’s chip system bids
The country’s antitrust regulator said on Sunday it has decided to impose a combined 10.46 billion won ($7.55 million) in fines on 12 domestic companies for colluding to fix bidding prices over a semiconductor monitoring and control system by Samsung SDS.
PS ENG, Daean C&I, Doota IT, and nine other companies colluded to predetermine a winning bidder through prior discussions about quotations in a total of 334 bids issued by Samsung from 2015 through 2023, according to the Fair Trade Commission (FTC).
They had done so to prevent low-cost bidding and prevent newcomers from winning the contracts after Samsung adopted a bidding system in 2015 with a goal to cut costs, reports Yonhap news agency.
“The collusion had affected the competitiveness of the semiconductor industry and caused damage to customers due to rising prices,” the FTC said in a release, saying it also ordered the companies to take corrective measures.
The system is designed to ensure optimum conditions at semiconductor manufacturing factories and the safety of workers, and it monitors and controls pump, chiller, specialty gas, and overall facilities needed for chip production, among other things.
Meta hit with 11 complaints in EU for using personal data to train AI models
IndoUS Tribune Newsdesk
Eleven complaints were filed against Meta (formerly Facebook) in European countries on Thursday over proposed changes that would allow the company to use personal data to train its artificial intelligence (AI) models without seeking consent, potentially violating European Union (EU) privacy rules.
Advocacy group NOYB (None of Your Business) filed these complaints and has called on national privacy watchdogs to take immediate action to stop Meta from using years of personal posts, private images, or online tracking data for its AI technology.
NOYB raised concerns about recent changes in Meta’s privacy policy, which are set to take effect on June 26. The complaints were filed in -- Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Ireland, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland and Spain.
“Meta is basically saying that it can
use ‘any data from any source for any purpose and make it available to anyone in the world’, as long as it’s done via ‘AI technology’. This is clearly the opposite of GDPR compliance,” NOYB founder Max Schrems, said in a statement.
“Meta does not say what it will use the data for, so it could either be a simple chatbot, extremely aggressive personalized advertising or even a killer drone. Meta also says that user data can be made available to any ‘third party’ - which means anyone in the world,” he added.
NOYB has already filed several
complaints against Meta and other Big Tech companies for allegedly violating the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). This regulation allows fines of up to 4 per cent of a company’s total global turnover for violations.
Meta claims it has a legitimate interest in using users’ data to train and develop its generative AI models and other AI tools, which can be shared with third parties. Schrems mentioned that Europe’s top court had ruled on the issue in 2021.
“The European Court of Justice has already made it clear that Meta has no ‘legitimate interest’ to override users’ right to data protection when it comes to advertising,” Schrems said.
“Yet the company is trying to use the same arguments for the training of undefined ‘AI technology’. It seems that Meta is once again blatantly ignoring the judgements of the CJEU,” he added.
NOYB mentioned that it plans to file complaints in the remaining EU Member States in the coming days.
Google buys Cameyo to bring Windows apps to ChromeOS devices
Google has acquired Cameyo, which develops virtualization tools to run Windows apps on ChromeOS devices, for an undisclosed sum. Recognizing the potential of virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI), Google partnered with Cameyo last year to launch a seamless virtual application delivery experience fully integrated with ChromeOS.
These features ensure users can seamlessly access data and files in a secure, easy, and familiar way within virtual apps.
“By bringing the Cameyo team’s expertise in-house, we are doubling down on our commitment to delivering a streamlined
experience for virtualized applications,” said Naveen Viswanatha, Head of Product Management, ChromeOS.
ChromeOS has long been committed to providing users with the best possible experience for virtual applications. According to the company, for ChromeOS users, this means even greater access to critical legacy applications, without the hassle of complex installations or updates.
The integration of Cameyo’s technology with ChromeOS helps businesses accelerate their adoption of web-based technology, Google added. Virtualized applications can be easily deployed and accessed across organization, regardless of device or location.
“Both ChromeOS and Cameyo provide zero trust security, and together deliver deep protection of data and systems from vulnerabilities,” said the company.
“By combining the power of ChromeOS with Cameyo’s innovative VAD technology, we are empowering businesses to modernize their IT infrastructure while preserving their investments in existing software,” said Viswanatha.
‘Historic’ multi-million euro fine slapped on low-cost airlines in Spain
The Spanish government has imposed fines totaling over 150 million euro ($163 million) on four low-cost airlines for charging an additional fee for hand luggage and other practices deemed unlawful. The companies affected are Ryanair, EasyJet, Vueling, and Volotea, the state television channel RTVE and other media reported on Friday, citing the Ministry for Social Rights and Consumer Protection in Madrid.
The Left-wing government confirmed the reports, but initially refused to provide details.
The Spanish consumer protection organization FACUA, whose complaint prompted the ministry to initiate sanction proceedings last year, have described the penalty as “historic.”
Spain’s aviation industry body ALAwhich says it represents more than 60 airlines operating in the EU - criticized the decision, which in practice amounts to a ban on the hand baggage fees charged by some airlines. This will harm consumers, especially “the 50 million passengers who do not carry hand luggage in the cabin,” it said in a statement.
The investigations into various
controversial rules were launched after several low-cost airlines tightened their hand luggage regulations. According to the ministry, this violated Spanish law because services that were traditionally included in the ticket price were now charged separately.
That allowed the airlines to position themselves better in search engine results due to the low prices offered without hand luggage included, the ministry said last year. The probe also looked into surcharges for seat reservations, especially for people accompanying minors or people in need of assistance. An appeal can be lodged against the ministry’s decision.

World Athletics launches shoe-check app to help athletes follow new regulations
Facing a challenge from technically enhanced shoe innovations that have resulted in super-fast times, and shattering records, the World Athletics has launched a new shoe check application to make it even easier for athletes, coaches, officials, and shoe manufacturers to monitor the compliance of competition footwear.
With technically improved shoes like Nike’s Vaporfly and the recentlylaunched Adidas’ ‘super shoes’ that have resulted in record-breaking spree, the World Athletics, the global body for track and field, has introduced new regulations to curtail the spread of such shoes.
The current athletic shoe regulations were introduced in 2022 to establish a transparent, objective, and fair set of requirements, and to protect the integrity of the sport, the World Athletics informed in a release on Thursday.
The shoes that athletes can wear under these regulations vary between disciplines, with stack height, embedded plates and availability all taken into account. Specific regulations are in place for the development of shoes, which are prototypes that a shoe manufacturer would like to test in competitions before introducing them to the retail market.
It is the responsibility of athletes to make sure that the shoes they are wearing in competition are approved and can be worn in the specific discipline, the release said.
English Premier League clubs vote to continue VAR, focus on enhancements
In a decisive move, Premier League clubs have voted in favor of continuing to use Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology in the upcoming season. Recognizing the benefits of more accurate decision-making, the clubs also acknowledged the need for improvements to enhance the game and the experience for supporters.
During the thorough discussions at the Premier League’s Annual General Meeting (AGM), it was agreed that Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL), the Premier League, and the clubs have significant roles to play in refining the system and improving its reputation. Six key areas were highlighted as part of ongoing efforts to enhance VAR:

Qualifier: Skipper Sunil Chhetri signs
in style, gives one last message to media
On a night in which the spotlight shone on India’s brightest star, an emotional Sunil Chhetri did not make an appearance at the postgame conference. The Indian skipper managed to sign off one last time in a way only he could, one which oozes class.
“To my friends from the media-
Over the last 19 years, I’ve had the opportunity to interact with so many of you, on more than a few occasions. There were times when I had to say a lot less than I would have liked to, and others when I responded to your questions with long monologues.
“There were the answers laced with frustration, the ones that were -- much to your annoyance -- non-committal, and then the press conferences that ended in a hurry. But
through it all, I’d like to believe that I was always honest with you. And that I always chose to have a conversation with you, even if it risked making headlines for reasons beyond those that I would have liked,” read the letter by Chhetri.
Despite the disappointment of the goalless draw between India and Kuwait, the legend of Chhetri got the farewell he deserved, the crowd of Salt Lake rose to applaud and bow down to the man who changed Indian football. He lapped the stadium applauding fans and got a guard of honor from his teammates which also saw the number 11 break down into tears before exiting the pitch.
The game against Kuwait was the 39-yearold’s 151st and final game of a storied national career and will forever be remembered with fondness.
Warner surpasses Finch to become Australia’s highest run-scorer in T20s
Opener David Warner surpassed former captain Aaron Finch to become the most run-scorer for Australia in the T20s. Warner, playing his final T20 World Cup, achieved the feat in their opening match against Oman. In 104 matches for Australia, Warner has scored 3,155 runs at an average of 33.92. He also smashed 27 half-centuries and a century in the T20Is so far. On the other hand, Finch had accumulated 3120 runs in 103 matches including 19 fifties and two centuries.
and communication and lastly, fan and stakeholder communication campaign
The confirmed introduction of SAOT in autumn 2024 promises to bring quicker and more consistent placements of the virtual offside line using optical player tracking. This technology will also produce high-quality broadcast graphics, enhancing the viewing experience for both in-stadium fans and TV audiences.
Additionally, the Premier League and PGMOL will continue to advocate for more flexibility in the Laws of the Game from IFAB (International Football Association Board). This includes lobbying for the allowance of live video and audio broadcasts during VAR reviews, aiming to increase transparency and engagement.
Djokovic undergoes successful knee surgery after French Open withdrawal
Sknee surgery after pulling out of the French Open semifinal on Tuesday. The 37-year-old updated on the injury that forced him to leave the claycourt Grand Slam midway. The 24-time Grand Slam champion aggravated his right knee injury during the fourth-round match against Francisco Cerundolo.
“I am so appreciative of the team of doctors who have been by my side as well as the overwhelming support I have received from my fans.” Djokovic said he is hoping to return “as soon as possible” and is eager to play at the highest level.
The recovery time for a meniscus tear usually takes at least three weeks which makes him doubtful for the Wimbledon that starts on July 1. The seven-time Wimbledon champion had missed out on last year’s title after losing to Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz in the final. Apart from the Wimbledon, the injury will also affect Djokovic’s preparations for the Olympic Games, which start in Paris on July 26.

With giant screen, practice nets T20 World Cup sparks interest in global game of cricket in insular New York
In this insular metropolis where a “World Series” is just 30 local teams from two countries battling out in baseball, the T20 World Cup is setting off a spark of awareness of cricket, a game with 2.5 billion fans around the world.
TV news programs explain the game using the metaphors of bowlers and pitchers, and sixers and home runs. After 273 years since the first recorded match in America was played here in Manhattan, a large outdoor screen at the World Trade Center shows live the games played at 50 kilometres away at East Meadow stadium and across the West Indies and the US. Nearby at practice nets, coaches and visitors try bowling and batting to get a feel for the sport. Hundreds of New Yorkers and visitors to the World Trade Center from around the globe are watching the matches and trying to find out more about a sport that seems mysterious, having faded slowly since the 19th century.
The crowds are expected to swell to thousands on Sunday for the relay of the IndiaPakistan fixture and the other high-interest matches culminating in Barbados on June 29. As the India-Ireland match at East Meadow on Wednesday was playing out on a giant screen for New Yorkers and visitors from around
the world, a Japanese man watching the Irish team bat waited impatiently for the Indian side to take the field while trying to decipher the game and wondering why there were no centuries that he had heard of in T20. Jeanne, an India fan from Barbados wearing a team shirt, was there with Yvonne, a shamrockwearing Irish American New Yorker, for the India-Ireland game at East Meadow on the big screen.
“We’re rivals today”, said Gina. With the team from the land of her ancestors coming to play, Yvonne said she took a crash course in cricket from her friend, but added, “I’m having a problem dissociating from baseball”. Yvonne, a lifelong cricket fan who has developed a love for India, was asked if she saw cricket becoming popular. Pointing to her friend, she said, “Yeah, I think it will do well”.
T20 World Cup:
Visiting from Ireland, Lee Mitchell who said he hadn’t played cricket since he was nine, tried batting at the nets. Afterwards, he said he was hoping Ireland would give India a drubbing, but the match ended with an eightwicket win for India. Mitchell said cricket is “not massive in Ireland, but definitely it’s getting bigger”. Leonard Prasad, a New Yorker from Guyana, tried his hand at bowling and batting at the nets and said, “It’s amazing”. He comes from a culture seeped in cricket, but his two children, he said are interested in tennis and golf.
“I want to get them interested in cricket”, he said. Prasad said he was going for the Netherlands-South Africa at East Meadows on Saturday with American friends. His brother, he said, had managed to get tickets for Sunday’s India-Pakistan match, the holy grail for cricket lovers. The Port Authority, which operates the World Trade Center sponsored the cricket spectacle.
“When we heard about cricket being the second most-watched sport in the world, we wanted to get involved in, offer our platform and our traffic numbers to this sport that really hasn’t been spotlighted domestically,” said Arianna Kane, program manager for the orga-
nization. “Everyone’s been incredibly excited that we’re showing something that is not very popular here, but we’re bringing the popularity domestically, teaching people who’ve never heard about cricket or don’t understand cricket,” she said.
“And then the people that grew up with it in their home countries are excited to see it here because they don’t often get to see it and it’s bringing back childhood memories for everybody,” Kane said. Anderson Economic Group, an economic and business consultancy, has estimated that just the India-Pakistan match is expected to benefit the New York metro region by USD 78 million – USD 46 million in direct benefits and USD 32 million indirectly.
AEG said it arrived at the number by taking into account the ticket sales, direct attendee spending from domestic and overseas travelers, new stadium construction investment, and other impacts on the region. “The Cricket World Cup is an unprecedented sporting event for cricket fans in the US and will also attract thousands of global visitors, likely spurring a positive spillover effect on cricket’s resurgence in the US,” said Shay Manawar, a senior AEG analyst.
ICC admits under-fire New York pitch not up to mark, says it will remedy the situation
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has admitted that pitches at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium have not been up to the mark and has promised to remedy the situation in the remaining matches of the Men’s T20 World Cup to be played there.
In the two matches played at the venue, teams batting first have been bowled out for below 100 and the uneven bounce and extra swing offered by the wicket has meant that teams batting second too have spent some anxious time in the middle.
In the first match of the T20 World Cup played at the venue that has been purposebuilt for this event, Sri Lanka were shot out by South Africa for 77. The South Africans lost four wickets and had to bat for 16 overs to reach the target.
In the second match, India bundled out Ireland for 96 with Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah, and Arshdeep Singh claiming the majority of the wickets. India
Swiatek beats Gauff, continues hot streak to storm into third final in a row
World No.1 and top seed Iga Swiatek moved into a third straight and fourth overall final at the French Open, beating American Coco Gauff in straight sets in the semifinals at Court Philippe-Chatier at the French Open on Thursday. Poland’s Swiatek, a three-time former French Open champion, stormed into the final with a straight sets defeat of her third-seeded rival, winning 6-2, 6-4 to move into Saturday’s final.
reached the target in 12.2 overs losing two wickets.
With India set to play archrivals Paki-
stan at the same venue on Sunday (June 9), there are fears that the pitch may have a big say in deciding the result of the match. The ICC has thus responded with a statement ahead of the big clash at the stadium.
“T20 Inc and the ICC recognize that the pitches used so far at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium have not played as consistently as we would have all wanted,” the statement said.
“The world-class grounds team have been working hard since the conclusion of yesterday’s game to remedy the situation and deliver the best possible surfaces for the remaining matches,” the statement read.
It is now to be seen how the ICC’s team of pitch experts mitigates the situation and salvages the wicket for future matches in the event.

Alex Gibney to direct Salman Rushdie documentary based on his memoir ‘Knife’
Adocumentary centered around Indian-born British-American novelist Salman Rushdie, based on his memoir ‘Knife: Meditations After an Attempted Murder’, will be directed by Oscar-winner Alex Gibney. Gibney is known for making films such as ‘Taxi to the Dark Side’ and ‘Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief’.
Tentatively titled ‘Knife’, the documentary is inspired by Rushdie’s memoir ‘Knife: Meditations After an Attempted Murder’, a gripping account of surviving an attempt on his life 30 years after a fatwa was ordered against him. The book, released in April, not only details the author’s life and career but also recounts the 2022 assassination attempt against the Indian-born, British-American novelist and the long recovery that followed.
Rushdie was stabbed 15 times in Chautauqua, New York, by a 24-year-old New Jersey man with a knife. The attack targeted Rushdie’s neck, eye, and chest, causing him to collapse on stage during a talk he was giving at Chautauqua’s amphitheater stage. He lost vision in one eye and was left incapacitated in one hand.

Kangana says she was ‘slapped & assaulted’ by CISF constable at Chandigarh airport
The newly-elected MP from Mandi, Himachal Pradesh, Kangana Ranaut, has said that she was “slapped and assaulted” by a CISF constable at the Chandigarh airport on Thursday. The incident took place when Kangana was travelling to New Delhi to join her colleagues for the meeting of the new BJP Parliamentary Party scheduled to be held on Friday.
Kangana has posted a video on X to confirm eyewitness reports that she had been “slapped and abused” by CISF constable Kulvinder Kaur when she was on her way to board the Vistara flight UK707 from Chandigarh to New Delhi.
Kaur, Kangana said, slapped her at the security checkpoint because she was upset with the newly-elected MP’s earlier negative remarks on the protests by farmers in Punjab. Kangana clarified that she was safe, but expressed her concern over the “rise of militancy and terrorism in Punjab”.
An independent video shared on X immediately after the incident showed the commotion that followed.
There was reported a minor scuffle before the incident. It followed Kangana’s
Kaur’s brother, Sher Singh, who admitted that he actively participated in the farmers’ agitation as an activist of the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political), told a news channel that his sister has been with the CISF for nearly 16 years.
Cillian Murphy to produce, star in film based on OTT series ‘Peaky Blinders’
Hollywood star Cillian Murphy is set to return as the fearsome gangster in the ‘Peaky Blinders’. However, this time around, the narrative will be condensed into a film. The film is set to be directed by Tom Harper, who directed episodes of the first season of ‘Peaky Blinders’ in 2013, reports Variety.
Cillian said, “It seems like Tommy Shelby wasn’t finished with me. It is very gratifying to be re-collaborating with Steven Knight and Tom Harper on the film version of ‘Peaky Blinders.’ This is one for the fans.”
Tom Harper shared, “When I first directed ‘Peaky Blinders’ over 10 years ago, we didn’t
know what the series would become, but we did know that there was something in the alchemy of the cast and the writing that felt explosive. ‘Peaky’ has always been a story about family – and so it’s incredibly exciting to be reuniting with Steve and Cillian to bring the movie to audiences across the world on Netflix.”
As per Variety, the continuation of the narrative, set in the lawless streets of Birmingham in the 1900s, has been written by the show’s creator, Steven Knight, who will co-produce alongside Murphy, Caryn Mandabach and Guy Heeley. Executive producers include Harper, David Kosse, Jamie Glazebrook, Andrew Warren and David Mason.
“In Punjab, the elections were held in the most peaceful manner. If you don’t allow the farmers to go to Delhi and use force against them, it is not justice,” he said.

Angelina and Brad Pitt’s daughter Shiloh hired her own lawyer to drop father’s surname
Hollywood superstars Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s daughter Shiloh took it upon herself to change her last name. A source close to the matter said that the 18-year-old filed to drop Pitt from her surname, which would make her legal name Shiloh Jolie, and hired her own attorney for the process, reports ‘People’ magazine.
“Shiloh hired her own lawyer and paid for it herself,” the source said, pointing to Jolie’s allegations of an “abuse history” as part of the reason for the name change.
Shiloh filed the legal documents, accessed by ‘People’, to drop ‘Pitt’ from her last name on May 27, which was her 18th birthday. In addition to Shiloh, Pitt, 60, and Jolie, 48, share five other children -- Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Knox, and Vivienne. Two of Shiloh’s siblings also appear to have removed ‘Pitt’ from their last name.
As per ‘People’, Vivienne is listed as “Vivienne Jolie” in the playbill for the Broadway show ‘The Outsiders’, which is produced by Jolie. Zahara, meanwhile, joined the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority at Spelman College in November and introduced herself there as Zahara Marley Jolie.
Jolie filed for divorce from Pitt in 2016 and requested sole physical custody of their six children. An insider said in August 2022 that their lack of connection has been “a sad situation for years”, referring to Pitt’s ongoing custody battle with Jolie.
Demi Lovato reveals she got used to ‘not seeing hope’ amid addiction struggles
Singer Demi Lovato says she found “hope” and “light” after her fifth stint of inpatient treatment amid her addiction and mental health struggles. Lovato has checked into rehab five times to treat her substance abuse issues, eating disorder, and other mental health problems.
Talking at the Center for Youth Mental Health at New York-Presbyterian’s annual benefit, People magazine reports, she said, “I have been to inpatient treatment five times, and it has something that every single time I walked back into a treatment center, I felt
defeated.”
“And I know that experience firsthand, but I think the glimmer of hope was when I started putting in the work and I started to, whether it was work, a program, or talk to my treatment team and build relationships there.”
“I think the glimmer of hope started to change when I started to find joy and the little things in life. And that was something that was so foreign to me before because I was so used to, so used to not seeing hope,” she said.
The singer said things “definitely felt different” during her fifth stint of treatment as she finally accepted she needed to change, reports femalefirst.co.uk.
Lovato said, “It felt like I had hit rock bottom, and I just knew what I needed to do, which was to live a life in recovery. And that was something that I pushed off for so long.”
The singer spoke about how medication has played a part in her recovery and has helped her “tremendously”.

Lok Sabha Elections
India gives NDA third term, but also a strong message
The results of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, announced on June 4th, have provided a clear yet contentious outcome in India’s political landscape.
By Dr. Avi
The ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA), led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has secured 292-294 seats, ensuring a majority and paving the way for a third consecutive term.
The opposition coalition, Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA), garnered 230233 seats, while independents and smaller parties captured 18 seats. In the aftermath of the results, PM Modi has declared victory, whereas Rahul Gandhi, a key figure in the INDIA coalition, has remained reticent about their next steps.
NDA’s Victory and Modi’s Leadership
The NDA’s performance in the 2024 elections, while securing a majority, fell short of an independent BJP majority and saw a considerable loss of seats compared to the 2020 elections. With 292294 seats, the NDA has crossed the majority mark in the 543-member Lok Sabha, but the reduced numbers highlight the challenges faced by the coalition.
INDIA Coalition’s Performance
The INDIA coalition, though falling short of forming the government, has made a significant impact by securing 230-233 seats.
This performance highlights the coalition’s ability to consolidate antiBJP votes and present a formidable challenge to the NDA. The INDIA alliance’s diverse composition, including regional heavyweights and the Indian National Congress (INC), indicates a broad-based appeal that cannot be overlooked.
The role of independents and smaller parties
With 18 seats, independents and smaller parties hold a potentially decisive role in the formation of the government. Their support could be critical in either bolstering the NDA’s majority or providing the INDIA coalition with a chance to stake a claim. These parties are likely to engage in negotiations with both sides, seeking to maximize their influence and secure favorable terms for their support.
Reasons behind NDA’s loss of seats in key states
The 2024 Lok Sabha elections saw a noticeable reduction in the number of seats won by the Modi-led NDA government, particularly in key states like Uttar Pradesh (UP) and Maharashtra. Several factors contributed to this shift:
1. Anti-Incumbency Factor UP: The BJP has been in power for multiple terms both at the central and state levels. Voter fatigue with prolonged governance by the same party often leads to a search for alternatives. Issues like unemployment, agricultural distress, and inadequate local infrastructure remained prominent concerns for many voters.
Maharashtra: The state government, a coalition between BJP and smaller regional parties, faced internal conflicts and allegations of inadequate disaster management, especially during the pandemic and natural calamities.
2. Strong Opposition Alliances
UP: The INDIA coalition effectively united key regional players like the Samajwadi Party (SP) and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), who managed to consolidate their vote banks against the BJP. The alliance proved formidable in countering BJP’s dominance.
Maharashtra: The Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) coalition, comprising the Shiv Sena (UBT),
Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), and Indian National Congress (INC), presented a united front. Their combined grassroots outreach and voter mobilization efforts were successful in key constituencies.
3. Economic and Social Issues
Economic Concerns: Despite economic growth figures, many young voters expressed dissatisfaction with job creation and employment opportunities. The discontent was particularly significant in urban and semiurban areas. Persistent issues in the agricultural sector, including low crop prices and delayed relief measures, impacted rural voters, especially in agrarian states like UP and Maharashtra.
Social Issues: The opposition effectively leveraged caste-based issues and alliances. In UP, the SP and BSP’s combined efforts addressed the concerns of OBCs and Dalits, respectively, leading to significant inroads into BJP’s traditional voter base.
4. Regional leadership and local issues
UP: Akhilesh Yadav’s leadership of the SP and his appeal to younger voters helped the opposition gain ground. His strategic alliances with smaller parties also played a crucial role.
Maharashtra: The NCP’s Sharad Pawar and Shiv Sena’s (UBT) Uddhav Thackeray effectively communicated local issues and criticized the BJP’s handling of state-specific concerns, resonating well with voters.
5. Campaign strategies and messaging
UP: The INDIA coalition ran targeted campaigns addressing local grievances, focusing on employment, social justice, and anti-incumbency. Their messaging resonated with a broad spectrum of voters who felt neglected by the central government’s policies.
Maharashtra: The MVA’s campaign emphasized the failures of the state government in managing the pandemic, agrarian issues, and urban development. Their narrative of local empowerment and better governance struck a chord with the electorate.
As PM Modi prepares for his third term, his leadership will be tested in maintaining coalition unity and delivering on electoral promises. The INDIA coalition, despite their loss, has an opportunity to strengthen their organizational structure and present a credible alternative in future elections. The evolving political landscape of India continues to reflect the country’s rich diversity and democratic resilience.

OFBJP USA, Bhartiya Seniors Of Chicago organize a live screening of India’s Lok Sabha election result
By Vandana Jhingan
Overseas Friends of BJP, USA along with the support of the Bharatiya Senior Citizens of Chicago organized Great India’s Historical Election Result Counting program at Rana Reagan Center in Carol Stream, Illinois on June 3. The event was attended by over 900 people, who watched the results in anticipation and excitement.
Bharatiya Senior Citizens of Chicago organized the live screening of the entire result on a 85” TV. The program commenced at 9 PM and went on until the counting continued.
While the people watched the results in anticipation, they were served with snacks and tea. Throughout the event, Rakesh Malhotra was giving minute-to-minute updates on the stage. As it was evident that PM Modi will have another term as a PM, Rakesh said, ”I would like to take
this opportunity to profusely thank you all for your uninhibited support in India’s election campaign for BJP and PM Modi. We express our profound gratitude for your selfless hard work and spending all weekends since March 1st for about 3 months. Your laudable hard work brought us victory.”
“This is really a historic victory as PM Modi will be taking oath for a third consecutive term. This is happening after 1962 and we all will cherish this hardearned victory,” he added.
The organizers shared their heartiest congratulations to all of the attendees on the sweet victory of BJP and NDA.
Dr. Bharat Barai said, “I understand that we got little less than expected results but consider the following:
1. BJP is the single largest party.
2. Combined opposition seat count is less than the single largest party, BJP.
3. No single largest party during the Coalition era ever got the seat count as large as that of the BJP in 2024.
4. BJP’s vote share is the same as that of 2019. Unchanged popularity.
5. BJP is forming the government in Odisha for the first time.
6. BJP won a seat in Kerala for the first time.
7. Telangana saw BJP doubling its seats from 2019 earning a vote share of about 40%.
8. Improved vote share in Tamil Nadu.
9. Swept MP, Chhattisgarh, HP, UK, Delhi and Odisha.
“Thus, there is no one reason for getting less seats. BJP as a party will assess the reasons and will make a course correction. But to our delight, Modi ji is taking oath for a third consecutive term and he will continue his reforms and development work unhindered,” he concluded.
BSC President Haribhai Patel, thanked everyone for their tremendous efforts in call campaigning, video creation, tweeting, social media sharing, and on-ground
work. “Your dedication has truly made a meaningful impact in the places where we focused our efforts for this crucial election,” he said.
He added, “I am confident that under the leadership of Shri Narendra Modi ji, we will see a bright future. Let’s continue to think about how we can improve and make even greater strides in future elections. Your hard work is deeply appreciated.”
Community Leader Krishna Bansal also thanked Vandana Jhingan (TV ASIA Midwest Bureau Chief), Prachi Jaitly, Jayanti Oza (News Media Journalist) and food sponsors and BSC Volunteers.

Nourish your heart: Simple diet changes for a healthier life
By Health Corner, IndoUs Tribune
Lipid Panel = Cholesterol
Ahealthy diet and lifestyle are key to preventing various diseases, including heart disease. Making dietary changes might seem daunting, but starting with small steps and building on your successes can lead to improved health and lasting lifestyle changes. Here are some tips to help you improve your diet and enhance your heart and overall health:
Focus on Healthy Fats
Not all fats are bad for you; in fact, your body needs some fats to function properly. Incorporate healthy fats into your diet by choosing olive oil, avocados, nuts, chia seeds, flax seeds, and salmon. These options provide the essential fats your body needs.
Include Fiber
Switch from white bread and rice to whole grain bread and brown rice. In the produce section, opt for colorful fruits and vegetables like dark leafy greens, purple cabbage, and red raspberries. Chia and flax seeds are excellent sources of both healthy fats and fiber and can easily be added to smoothies or oatmeal.
Go Plant-Based
Consider replacing a few meat-based meals each week with plant-based options. Try a veggie burger or tacos made with lentils and avocados. Plantbased meals can significantly benefit your heart health.
Skip the Salt
The American Heart Association
(AHA) recommends limiting sodium intake to 2,300 milligrams per day, with a further reduction to 1,500 mg per day for even better blood pressure control. Use fresh herbs, sodium-free or low-sodium seasonings, and citrus to flavor your food instead of salt.
Limit Saturated Fats
Opt for skim milk instead of whole milk and choose lower-fat cheeses. Avoid packaged baked goods and other high-fat treats. Select lean cuts of meat and limit high-fat options like bacon or sausage. Chicken, salmon, and ground turkey are good substitutes for fatty meats.
Stay Hydrated
Ensure you drink at least 8 glasses of water a day and avoid sugary drinks.
Incorporate Exercise, Reduce Stress, and Maintain Healthy Sleep Habits
Non-dietary ways to improve heart health include regular exercise, reducing stress, and getting sufficient sleep. The AHA recommends 150 minutes of exercise per week or 30 minutes of exercise at least five days a week. The National Sleep Foundation suggests adults should get 7 to 9 hours of sleep per night. Exercise and good sleep can help reduce stress, and practicing gratitude and mindfulness can also lower stress levels.
Heart-Healthy Recipes to Try
4Superfood Beet Bean Burgers
4Caprese Chicken Zucchini Noodles
4Salmon with Strawberry Avocado Salsa
Quick and Easy Food Swaps for Heart Health
4Stir-Fry: Use tofu, edamame, tempeh, or another plant-based protein instead of steak or chicken.
4Burgers: Choose a bean or veggie burger over a cheeseburger.
4Tacos: Use lentils and avocados instead of ground beef or steak.
4Grilling: Opt for salmon or albacore tuna instead of steak or other fatty meats.
4Snacks: Make a healthy trail mix with a bit of dark chocolate instead of grabbing a candy bar or cookie.
4Pasta and Rice: Try zucchini noodles, spaghetti squash, or cauliflower rice instead of pasta or white rice.
4Breakfast: Replace high-sugar cereals with oatmeal topped with chia seeds and berries.
4Seasonings: Use fresh herbs, garlic, or citrus to season foods instead of salty seasonings.
By incorporating these changes into your diet and lifestyle, you can significantly improve your heart health and overall well-being. Small, consistent steps can lead to lasting positive effects.

6 Tips to help you choose the ideal summer fragrance
If summer was an olfactory memory, it would take you down a journey of fresh florals and zesty fruits. Indeed, what’s summer without a spritz of your favorite fragrance? So, as you prepare for the months ahead, here’s what you need to know about choosing the perfect summer fragrance.
Tip 1: Begin with what you like
The chore of spritzing fragrances can be a powerful sensorial experience, and what’s better than picking a note which is attached to a memory. If you’d rather be at a lavender field in the south of France or sun-bathing at a Spanish beach pick similar scents in your perfumes with floral or aquatic notes like lemon, yuzu, lilly, magnolia and cedar, sandalwood and amber. This will not only transport you back to the days but also elevate your mood irrespective of location.
Tip 2: Know your concentrations and where to wear them
When it comes to perfume industry’s nomenclature it’s useful to understand how concentrations work for each of them, namely, Eau De Parfum (EDP) and Eau De Toilette (EDT). An EDT is a better option for summer as it has a lesser concentration of fragrance oil between 8-15%, which gives an airy
and lightweight effect. Conversely, an EDP contains about 15-30% concentration of fragrance oil, making it rather heavy for the warm weather. Now that you know the key difference in their states, pick between the concentrations based on functionality, like a lighter EDT will work well for a day at the office and a strong EDP for the nights.
Tip 3: Keep things light with floral and green notes
Hot summer days seek scents that are within the floral, beachy and exotic range as opposed to sharper and deeper notes like leather and velvet. Look for something that boosts your mood and is refreshing, soothing and relaxing. Try ingredients within the family like rose, vanilla, sandalwood, orange blossom, mandarin, jasmine, lemon, bergamot, neroli, or greener options rosemary, lemongrass and peppermint.
Tip 4: Sniff and spray test
When it comes to buying a scent, try out the sniff and spray test. Smell the bottle and comprehend your feelings, to indulge further into the sensation apply it your wrist as patch text and give it some time to sink in. This is because when you apply a fragrance, the top notes hit you at first but as time passes, the middle and base notes are more pronounced. Trust what your senses tell you to make a decision on your next summer fragrance.
Tip 5: Layer scents mindfully
You can also consider layering scents to create your own signature
scent. The rule of thumb is to go with complementing fragrance families. So, for instance, sweet notes of vanilla and caramel pair well with floral summer fragrances like rose and jasmine. On the other hand, citrus notes of mandarin, lemongrass and the like work perfectly together with spicy notes like cinnamon, nutmeg and pepper.
Tip 6: Consider other skincare formulas for long-lasting scent
A combination of elements such as a body wash and lotion to prepare the skin followed by your fragrance of choice can help preserve the scent during the summer. Since these concoctions are rich in nature, they can trap scents within the body as you glide through your day.
