Moscow warns Washington not to authorize attacks on Russian territory
Friday, 24 May 2024
Moscow has warned Washington not to allow Ukraine to launch attacks with US weapons on Russian territory. “This stance is irresponsible, the position is perilous with its consequences,” Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov told Russian state television on Thursday.
He was commenting on a report in the US newspaper, the New York Times, according to which US Secretary of State Antony Blinken favors such strikes against Russian territory and wants to persuade President Joe Biden to lift the restrictions.
In Washington, but also some European capitals, an escalation is constantly being provoked, said Peskov. There are “hotheads in the US who see it as their job to keep adding fuel to the fire”.
“It is now obvious to all experts that no weapons are capable of somehow turning the tide in the zone of the special military operation,” said the close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, using Russia’s term for the war in Ukraine.
On the contrary, the weapons deliveries are prolonging the war for the Ukrainians, Peskov added.
The US State Department would neither confirm nor deny the New York Times report on Thursday. Blinken had said during his visit to Kiev last week that the US was committed to helping Ukraine win the war.
“We have not encouraged or enabled strikes outside of Ukraine, but ultimately Ukraine has to make decisions for itself about how it’s going to conduct this war, a war it’s conducting in defence of its freedom, of its sovereignty, of its territorial integrity,” he said in the Ukrainian capital.
“And we will continue to back Ukraine with the equipment that it needs to succeed, that it needs to win.”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is demanding that the US and other Western allies allow his country to use the weapons supplied for strikes against Russia. So far, the country has mainly used weapons from its production for this purpose.
No Indian citizen will be left behind in journey to Viksit Bharat, says EAM Jaishankar
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said on Wednesday that in the country’s journey to Viksit Bharat @2047, no citizen of India will be left behind.
“While understanding that everybody cannot move at the same pace, we all have to firm up to move forward. It is also important to create a social welfare system,” the Minister said while speaking at an interactive session on Viksit Bharat @2047 organized by the PHD Chamber of Commerce in New Delhi.
Appreciating PM Narendra Modi for his policy choices, Jaishankar said his strong leadership and good judgment have steered India through many crises besides transforming the economy in the last 10 years.
He also pointed out that the government’s response in handling the Covid pandemic, the China crisis, and India’s stance on Russia and Ukraine

for Trump, triggers V-P slot talk
After running a spirited primary challenge to former US President Donald Trump, Nikki Haley, the former Ambassador to the UN, said on Wednesday that she will vote for him.
“I will be voting for Trump,” the Indiandescent politician said in a speech at Hudson Institute, a think-tank where she will hold a chair.
“She went on to explain her reasons. As a voter, I put my priorities on a President who’s going to have the backs of our allies and hold our enemies to account. Who would secure the border, no more excuses. A President who would support capitalism
and freedom. A President who understands we need less debt, not more debt. Trump has not been perfect on these policies. I have made that clear many, many times. But Biden has been a catastrophe.”
Haley’s endorsement triggered talk of joining the Trump ticket as running mate. Trump, who has stoked speculation about his running mate naming those in consideration, has ruled out Haley.
But if Haley can change her mind about Trump, so and Trump about her.
Running against him for the party’s nomination to run for the White House, she had called him “unhinged” and chaos followed him wherever he went.

Biden accuses Trump of using ‘Hitler’s language’ in newspaper mock-up
President
accused
Trump is using “Hitler’s language. That’s not America’s,” Biden said in a campaign video released on Tuesday.
In the short clip, the Democrat holds a phone in his hand and says, referencing the video: “Is this on his official account? Wow.”
On Monday, Trump shared a video, which was later deleted, on his social media site Truth Social, showing mocks of newspaper articles that would be written if Trump won the presidential election in November.
Among the bits of text featured was a subheading referring to “the creation of a unified Reich.” The term “empire” in German is often associated with the Third Reich under Adolf Hitler’s Nazi regime from 1933-1945.

No Indian citizen will be left behind in journey to Viksit Bharat, says EAM Jaishankar
“It is a combination of making it easier to do business, reducing the cost of living, creating world-class infrastructure, improving our human resources, giving support to small businesses, and building upon the evolving startup ecosystem,” Jaishankar added.
He also pointed out that so far, 25 Crore people have come out of poverty; 35 Crore people have been provided healthcare; Mudra loans have been given to 50 Crore people; while 10 Crore people have benefited under the Ujjwala scheme. But there is a need to completely eradicate poverty, he added.
The Minister said that preparing for the global workforce is also important given the advantage of the demographic dividend that India enjoys today.
Speaking at the event, PHDCCI
President Sanjeev Agrawal said the government’s proactive initiatives and policies have been instrumental in driving India’s growth, which has catalyzed significant progress across different sectors, paving the way for economic resilience and achieving the vision of Viksit Bharat @2047.
The comprehensive support of the government has also empowered industries, enhanced infrastructure, and improved the quality of life, paving the way for a brighter future, he added.
More than 400 industry stakeholders participated in the event.

Washington criticizes ‘announced’ recognition of Palestine
The US government is skeptical about the announced recognition of Palestine as an independent state by several European countries.
“We believe the only way that you are going to achieve a two-state solution that delivers for both Israelis and Palestinians is through direct negotiations between the parties,” US President Joe Biden’s National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said in Washington on Wednesday.
The Biden administration has been working on this for a long time, he added.
In response to a question, Sullivan said that he could not see how the unilateral recognition of Palestine would contribute to any real progress toward a peace process or ceasefire.
Every country has the right to make its own decisions, but the US position on this matter is clear: a two-state solution must be brought about through direct negotiations between the parties, not through unilateral recognition.
US President Biden has repeatedly said this on the record. Norway and the two EU countries Ireland and Spain had earlier on Wednesday announced that they would recognize Palestine as a separate state.
The step is to be made formal on May 28, Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store, Irish Prime Minister Simon Harris, and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez announced on Wednesday.
The three countries hope that this will provide an impetus for the so-called two-state solution, in which Israelis and Palestinians are to live peacefully side by side in the future.
Haley will vote for Trump, triggers V-P slot talk
She had even suggested a mental acuity test for candidates running for President citing some of his many fumbles, which included mistaking Haley for Nancy Pelosi, a former Democratic Speaker of the House of Representatives.
A key reason Trump could change his mind on Haley is her supporters in the Republican Party, who remain so deeply hostile to him that they have continued to vote for her in the ongoing primaries even though she is no longer in the race. And these are not a handful of voters.
She won 21 percent of the votes in the Indiana primary earlier this month even though she has been out of the contest for weeks now.
Haley reminded Trump about her supporters.
“Trump would be smart to reach out to the millions of people who voted for me and continue to support me and not assume that they’re just going to be with him. And I genuinely hope he does.”
Even President Joe Biden’s campaign has been eyeing Haley’s supporters and has been wooing them as a sizable voting bloc.
Trump has a tight grip on the core of the Republican Party, which ensured his victory in the primaries and grants him an extortionist’s hold on the lawmakers of his party who fear the support of his base if they upset him. However, Trump will need to carry his party to come within striking range of the White House and he needs Haley’s supporters.
None of the other Vice-President aspirants who Trump paraded at a recent fundraiser at his Mar-a-Lago resort, have anything similar to offer to the former President. She has secured 14 percent in the Republican primaries even after exiting the race.
The word Reich in the video presumably refers to the founding of the German Reich in 1871, with the text being taken from a Wikipedia entry on World War I, according to US media.
According to the reports, the video was created using a ready-made newspaper article mask. It has also been used in other clips circulating online.
Other newspaper headlines in the video published on Trump’s platform also make reference to World War I.
Trump’s team later confirmed that the clip had been removed from his account. A spokeswoman for his campaign team said that it “was not a campaign video, it was created by a random account online and reposted by a staffer who clearly did not see the word.”
Biden also attacked the Republican, who
is hoping to return to the White House, at a campaign event in Boston on Tuesday.
The 81-year-old said that “the threat that Trump poses is greater in the second term than it was in the first,” according to reporters travelling with him. He called Trump “a little unhinged” and accused him of seeking revenge after losing the 2020 presidential election.
Biden and Trump are guaranteed to face off on November 5 in a rematch of the
2020 vote after both achieved the required number of delegates to be nominated as candidates of the Democratic and Republican parties, respectively.
Trump has been using radical rhetoric in his election campaign, including hateful and dehumanizing language, as well as making racist statements and inciting hatred against minorities. The 77-yearold also compared Biden’s government to the Gestapo, the official secret police of Nazi Germany.

Iran releases primary investigation report on President Raisi’s helicopter crash
The General Staff of Iran’s Armed Forces has released the first report on the causes of a recent helicopter crash that resulted in the deaths of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and his entourage.
Following the crash, a senior investigation committee composed of experts, specialists, and technicians arrived at the scene on Monday morning, the semi-official Tasnim news agency quoted the report by the General Staff of Iran’s Armed Forces as saying on Friday.
According to the report, the helicopter had remained on its predetermined course all along the way and had not deviated from the flight route. Nearly one minute and a half before the incident, the pilot of the crashed helicopter had contacted the other two helicopters of the President’s convoy, the report said.
After crashing into the mountain, the helicopter had caught fire, it said. “Complications of the region, fog, and low temperature” had caused the search
Trump’s aide urges sanction on ICC officials who sought arrest warrant for Netanyahu
Robert O’Brien, former national security adviser and top aide of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, has said that the US should slap sanctions on officials of International Criminal Court (ICC) officials who sought an arrest warrant for Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Robert O’Brien is in Israel along with John Rakolta, former US ambassador to the UAE, and Ed Mc Mullen, former ambassador of the US to Switzerland to seek a ground report.
He said that they had met Israeli President Issac Herzog, Prime Minister Netanyahu, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and War Cabinet Minister Benny Gantz.
Robert O’Brien, in the statement, said that the US could sanction the bank accounts and travel and can put visa restrictions on the “corrupt” prosecutors and judges of the ICC.
During 2017 and 2021, when Donald
Trump was the US President, the capital of Israel was shifted from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem -a long-pending demand of the Israelis.
With Trump being the Republican candidate for the US presidential post, he is trying to pitch himself as a much more reliable ally to
Israel than Biden.
Sources in Israel’s Prime Minister’s office said that the three policy advisers of Trump have communicated to the Israeli leadership the wholehearted support of the Republican presidential candidate for the Israeli cause.
South Korea President Yoon meets ex-US Secretary Pompeo, discusses Korean Peninsula issues
South Korea President Yoon Suk Yeol met with former US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to discuss issues surrounding the Korean Peninsula, as well as the SeoulWashington alliance, the presidential office said on Thursday.
During the meeting held in Seoul with Pompeo, who served as the top US diplomat under then President Donald Trump from 2018 to 2021, Yoon asked him to continue to pay close attention to South Korea’s efforts to seek peace on the Korean Peninsula backed by the strong
alliance, reports Yonhap News Agency. Yoon also expressed his willingness
to enhance cooperation with the United States on North Korea and to pursue closer trilateral cooperation involving Japan.
In response, Pompeo was quoted by the presidential office as saying that the alliance between Seoul and Washington has become stronger under the leadership of Yoon, whose administration shares common values with the US.
Pompeo added that he hopes the alliance will keep developing regardless of the political situation in the U.S. and wishes for closer bilateral cooperation, as well as strengthened trilateral ties, regarding North Korean issues.
and rescue operations to continue until nightfall and then throughout the night, the report said, adding, “At 5 a.m. local time on Monday, with the assistance of drones, the exact location of the incident was identified.”
No suspicious issue had been detected in the conversations between the watchtower and the flight crew, it added. More details would be provided after further investigations, it said. Raisi and his entourage were en route to East Azerbaijan province when the helicopter carrying them crashed in a mountainous area on Sunday.
Also on board the helicopter were Foreign Minister Hossein AmirAbdollahian and Mohammad Ali AleHashem, the representative of Iran’s Supreme Leader to East Azerbaijan. Raisi was laid to rest on Thursday in the holy shrine of Imam Reza in his hometown, the northeastern city of Mashhad.
Israel war cabinet approves new guidelines for hostage talks with Hamas
Israel War cabinet has approved new guidelines regarding the hostage-ceasefire “indirect” talks with Hamas. Sources said that the war cabinet has communicated to the negotiating team including Mossad Chief David Barnea and Shin Bet Director, Ronen Bar to continue negotiations for the return of the hostages.
The war cabinet had met urgently after the families of the hostages released footage of the abduction of five female soldiers from Nahal Oz base by Hamas on October 7. At least 128 hostages are still in Hamas custody.
Egypt, which is a key negotiator in the “indirect” truce talks between Hamas and Israel, has threatened to withdraw from mediation after it was reported that Egypt mishandled the last round of hostage talks which led to the collapse of the negotiations.
“Attempts to cast doubt and offend Egypt’s mediation efforts will only lead to further complications of the situation in Gaza and the entire region and may push Egypt to completely withdraw from its mediation in the current conflict,” Diaa Rashwan, Head of Egypt’s State Information Service said.
It was reported that Cairo had presented two separate proposals to Hamas and Israel. While the one presented to Israel was closer to its demands, another presented to Hamas supported its requirements.
These proposals, according to media reports, had infuriated the CIA Director, William Burns who was one of the main coordinators in the negotiation talks.

The significance of India’s ongoing Lok Sabha elections
Letter from Publisher
the 543 seats in the lower house of Parliament forms the government and appoints the prime minister. With over 960 million eligible voters, voter turnout is traditionally high, reaching a record 67% in the 2019 parliamentary election.
Starting from April 19, Indians have been participating in a multiphase general election that will conclude on June 1, with the results to be announced on June 4. This election, the largest democratic exercise in the world, will shape the political landscape of India for the next five years.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, aiming for a third term, has become a pivotal figure in this election. Over the past decade, PM Modi has focused on development initiatives while promoting a vision of India as a Hindu-first nation. This dual approach has boosted his popularity among many while also highlighting the nation’s diverse cultural and religious fabric. Despite concerns about election fairness, India’s electoral process is generally seen as credible and the results are typically accepted.
How Does India Vote?
India’s parliamentary system of governance means that the party or coalition winning a majority of
Voting takes place electronically at more than a million polling stations, involving around 15 million election staff. To ensure accessibility, election officials traverse varied terrains using multiple forms of transportation. The cost of conducting elections in India is the highest globally, with expenditures expected to double from the $7 billion spent in 2019.
Who Is Running, and Who Is Likely to Win?
Prime Minister Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) currently holds a significant majority in Parliament. Despite the unpredictable nature of Indian elections, the BJP is in a strong position to retain power due to its substantial resources and effective election strategies. PM Modi’s campaign combines a focus on Hindu majoritarianism with a range of welfare and infrastructure programs that appeal to a broad voter base.
The primary opposition, the Indian National Congress, has seen its influence wane, securing only 52 seats in the 2019 elections. Although opposition parties have attempted to unite against the ruling party under the banner of INDI Alliance or INDIA, but internal disagreements seem to have hindered their efforts.
What Are the Main Issues?
Prime Minister Modi’s campaign
has emphasized India’s global standing and expanded welfare programs. However, as the election has progressed, the BJP has also addressed religious and cultural issues that resonate with its core supporters. Meanwhile, the opposition has focused on social and economic justice, advocating for a fairer distribution of resources based on caste data.
When Will We Find Out the Results?
Due to India’s vast size, voting is conducted in seven phases from April 19 to June 1. This scheduling takes into account various climate conditions and cultural festivals across the country. The votes will be counted on June 4, with results expected to be announced by the end of the day.
Why This Election Matters Globally The outcome of India’s elections has significant global implications. India’s direction under Prime Minister Modi will influence its strategic relationship with the United States. The international community is also keenly observing India’s commitment to democratic principles and human rights. The results of this election will shape not only India’s domestic policies but also its role on the global stage.
As the world watches, we extend our best wishes to the people of India for a successful election. We congratulate them on exercising their democratic right to choose their leaders, ensuring a brighter and better future for their nation.

India abstains on UNGA resolution commemorating Srebrenica genocide
India has abstained on a UN General Assembly resolution to create an annual day to commemorate the 1995 genocide in Srebrenica during the civil war that followed the break-up of Yugoslavia.
The resolution sponsored by Germany and Rwanda was carried on Thursday with only 84 votes in the 193-member Assembly reflecting the deep divisions over it because most such motions are adopted by consensus.
Nineteen countries voted against it, while 68 abstained and 22 altogether stayed away. India did not explain the reasons for the abstention.
With the passage of the resolution, the UN will commemorate every year on July 11 the killing of about 8,000 Bosnian Muslims by Bosnian Serbs, who were Orthodox Christians, as “The International Day of Reflection and Commemoration of the 1995 Genocide in Srebrenica”.
The victims were men and boys separated from the women in the town of Srebrenica in Bosnia and Herzegovina by ethnic Serb fighters who overran it during the three-anda-half-year-long civil war when the ethnic communities fought for supremacy in the nascent nation after Yugoslavia splintered.
Germany’s Permanent Representative Antje Leendertse said her country was sponsoring
the resolution to prevent a genocide like that perpetrated by German Nazis from recurring.
Six million Jews were killed by Nazis during World War II. The commemoration was to honor the memory of the victims of the Srebrenica massacre in Bosnia and was not directed against Serbs, but only against those who committed the killings, Leendertse added.
Aleksandar Vucic, the President of neighboring Serbia, questioned the standing of Germany to make such a proposal given its history and said it was introduced for political reasons and to stigmatize the Serbian people.
Those who carried out the massacre have already been tried, convicted, and sentenced to
prison, he said. The resolution was one-sided and was silent on the massacres of Serbians and people of other ethnicities, he added.
Under the 1995 peace accord ending the civil war in Bosnia, it has a tripartite presidency shared by an ethnic Bosnian, a Serb, and a Croat.
The Serb President of Bosnia, Milorad Dodik, and Vucic came to the UN to campaign against the resolution, which they said was directed against the ethnic Serbs.
In the polarized UN, it was viewed through the prism of the confrontation between the West and Russia, making it appear as directed against Serbia, a Moscow ally, and ethnic
Good ties with Pakistan will benefit India more, says former Pak minister
Urging Prime Minister Narendra Modi to rethink his ‘Pakistan policy’, former Pakistan Minister Fawad Chaudhry said that a good relationship between the two countries could encourage trade and hugely benefit New Delhi.
“We need to have a good relationship with India, especially between the two Punjabs. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is close to Afghanistan, Balochistan to Iran, and Karachi is close to the ocean. So, trade with India can be worked out through the landlocked province of Punjab,” Chaudhry said in an interview.
“If India develops good relations with Pakistan, they get access to Afghanistan and the entire Central Asian region. It will have a huge impact on trade in the region. That is the reason I think Narendra Modi needs to rethink his Pakistan policy. In fact, India will benefit more,” he added.
Chaudhry, who served as the Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting and the Minister for Science and Technology in the government led by former Prime Minister Imran Khan, also admitted that the current turmoil in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) is a result of the poor policies adopted by the current Shehbaz Sharif government in Pakistan.
“Yes, demonstrations and violence have taken place in Kashmir as an elected government was replaced with a dummy one. There is a lot of resentment among the people of the region. This is what we call democracy because when people reject such moves, it shows that the society is alive and thriving,” he said. Chaudhry, who had earlier praised Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, once again mentioned the AAP supremo while highlighting the current situation in Pakistan.
“Inflation is a worldwide phenomenon... Yes, there is a lot of resentment in Pakistan against the government and many protests are taking place because people never voted for such a system.
“Arvind Kejriwal also mentioned the other day about how the largest party in Pakistan was targeted, Imran Khan was put in jail, and leaders were disqualified from
participating in the elections. A fake regime is now running the show and it is quite obvious that the people of Pakistan, who can differentiate between a democratically elected government and a fascist regime, are deeply disappointed,” he said.
The former minister also said that the people of Pakistan are not really “obsessed” with what is happening across the border.
“We in Pakistan are not really obsessed with India. We have our own issues to deal with, and are not really much bothered about the elections that are taking place in India. Also, I don’t know if Rahul Gandhi is popular here, but I can certainly tell that Narendra Modi is quite unpopular,” said Chaudhry.
Prime Minister Modi has been spotlighting the poor state of affairs in Pakistan during his ongoing election campaign, saying that the neighboring nation which has been harboring terrorists is now seen moving around with a begging bowl.
“Whatever I have been watching on the Indian news channels, it seems that the BJP-NDA will bag around 300 seats instead of the 400-plus target that was projected initially. They will face rejection in North India, particularly in Delhi and Punjab. I don’t think that their goal of changing the Indian Constitution and making India an RSS country will succeed,” Chaudhry said.
Serbians in Bosnia, and as a Western attempt to show solidarity with Muslims, who are furious with the Western-backed Israel attacks on Gaza that have killed more than 34,000.
The resolution introduced without a consensus and extensive consultations only ended up showing the rift in the UN.
While most Muslim countries voted with the West on the resolution, they also raised the killings in Gaza.
Egypt’s Permanent Representative Osama Abdel Khalek, for example, while supporting the resolution, criticized the West for not showing the same degree of concern for those killed in Gaza.
Mexico gave a typical reason shared by many who spoke, that it did not contribute to reconciliation in the region.
Mexico’s Permanent Representative Hector Enrique Vasconcelos y Cruz said that “inclusive dialogue among all concerned states and relevant parties of the region is the heart of initiatives such as this one, work towards reconciliation and strengthen efforts to promote the rights of victims to truth, justice and reparations”.
The resolution was “not accompanied by due process of inclusive consultations, especially with countries in the Balkans region,” he added.
US claims Russia likely launched space weapon into orbit last week
The US has claimed that Russia launched what is likely a space weapon capable of attacking other satellites in low Earth orbit, US Pentagon spokesman Patrick Ryder announced. Ryder added that the launch took place on May 16, and the Russian satellite is now in the same orbit as a US government satellite.
When asked whether the Russian satellite threatened the US satellite, Ryder said, “Well, it’s a space defence weapon in the same orbit as a US government satellite.” American UN representative Robert Wood had previously expressed views similar to Ryder’s.
The Pentagon stated that it is not the first time Russia has launched such space weapons, referring to 2019 and 2022. On Monday, a UN resolution tabled by Russia against an arms race in space failed in the UN Security Council. The draft resolution received seven votes in favor, while seven countries, including the US, voted against it.
US representative Robert Wood accused Moscow of using manipulative tactics after Russia vetoed a US resolution against nuclear weapons in space last month. In February, reports in the US warned about Russia’s nuclear ambitions in space, stating that the nuclear potential of weapons directed against satellites could pose a threat to national and international security. The US government responded to the reports, accusing Russia of developing military capabilities for use against satellites, with President Joe Biden assuring that there is no nuclear danger facing Americans or people anywhere in the world.

US CDC warns of multi-state salmonella outbreak linked to backyard poultry
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on Thursday that public health officials are investigating multistate outbreaks of salmonella linked to contact with backyard poultry. The CDC said that 109 people from 29 states have gotten sick from salmonella after touching or caring for backyard poultry such as chickens and ducks.
The states with the highest number of cases are Missouri, Texas and Oklahoma. No deaths have been reported while 33 people have been hospitalized. The true number of sick people is likely much higher than the number reported because many recover without medical care and are not tested for salmonella, the CDC said.
The health agency advised people to wash their hands with soap and water immediately after touching backyard poultry, their eggs, or anything in the area where they live and roam. The CDC also advised stores selling backyard poultry to clean and sanitize poultry display areas and source them from hatcheries that take steps to reduce salmonella contamination.
Ex-Baltimore prosecutor
Marilyn Mosby avoids prison time for perjury and mortgage fraud convictions
Afederal judge has sentenced Baltimore’s former top prosecutor Marilyn Mosby to time served and 12 months of home confinement – to be served concurrently with 3 years of supervised release – for mortgage fraud and perjury.
In addition, Mosby was ordered to complete 100 hours of community service, according to the judgment.
Mosby, who gained national prominence for charging six police officers in connection with the 2015 death of Freddie Gray in a police van, was convicted in two trials of making a false mortgage application and perjury. US prosecutors had asked the court to sentence Mosby, 44, to 20 months in prison, followed by a supervised release, according to a May 9 sentencing memorandum. That sentence, the memo says, would “make clear that those who break the law, including those in positions of public trust, will be held accountable.”
Mosby has claimed she is innocent and the charges against her are politically motivated. Her attorneys argued in a May 16 response she “has been punished enough,” asking for a sentence of time served with one year of supervised release.
Families of Uvalde victims reach $2 million settlement with city
Families of children killed and injured in the 2022 Uvalde, Texas mass shooting have announced a $2 million settlement with the city, days before the anniversary of the massacre.
Nineteen children and two teachers were shot when an 18-year-old gunman opened fire at Robb Elementary School, with police taking more than an hour to stop him. Multiple lawsuits were filed against Uvalde’s police and local officials over what the Justice Department has described as a chaotic and disorganized response.
The $2 milllion going to families of the 17 children killed and two who survived “demonstrates compassion and respect” without plunging the small city of Uvalde into bankruptcy, their attorney, Josh Koskoff, said.
“The last thing that they would want to do is inflict financial hardship on their friends and neighbors,” he told a news conference on Wednesday. “There’s not enough money in this city,” he added.
A Justice Department report published in January found that a “lack of urgency” plagued the response by more than 370 officers from various local, state and federal departments. They waited over 70 minutes before confronting the culprit, who was eventually shot and killed.
The settlement also includes additional training and “fitness for duty” standards for Uvalde police officers, mental health services for the community, and creation of a committee to coordinate a permanent memorial.
Additionally, the families announced that they will be taking new legal action against 92 individual officers from the
UCLA should have immediately removed protesters, chancellor tells House
The head of the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) told a U.S. House panel on Thursday that the school should have been ready to immediately remove an encampment of pro-Palestinian activists that became the site of a violent clash with counterprotesters last month. UCLA Chancellor Gene Block was one of three U.S. university leaders who testified at a hearing of the Republicancontrolled U.S. House of Representatives’ Education Committee into the wave of protests against Israel’s war in Gaza that has unfolded on American campuses over the past two months.
“With the benefit of hindsight, we should have been prepared to immediately remove the encampment if and when the safety of our
community was put at risk,” Block told the panel.
UCLA was the site of an April 30 overnight mob attack on pro-Palestinian activists that was one of the most violent scenes of the recent protests. The university on Wednesday removed the head of its campus police for its handling of the protests, which included inaction during the attack and the arrests by state and local police of 210 people the next night.
On dozens of campuses throughout the country, students set up tents and held rallies to call on President Joe Biden to do more to end the fighting in Gaza and to demand that their universities divest from companies that back Israel’s government. Some protesters have adopted antisemitic rhetoric, leading some Jewish students to fear for their safety.

Another provocative flag flown at Samuel Alito residence, report says
Another type of provocative flag that was flown during the breach of the US Capitol by extremist supporters of Donald Trump on 6 January 2021 was reportedly flown outside a summer residence of US supreme court justice Samuel Alito –following a similar, prior incident outside his main residence.
Last summer, the “Appeal to Heaven” flag, which originates from the Revolutionary war and has in recent years become a symbol of far-right Christian extremism, was flown outside Alito’s summer home in Long Beach Island, New Jersey, the New York Times reported on Wednesday.
The New York Times report comes just days after it reported that an upside-down American flag was flown outside Alito’s Virginia home just days after the January 6 Capitol riots.

Norfolk Southern to pay $15 million civil penalty, cleanup costs over 2023 Ohio derailment
Norfolk Southern agreed to pay a $15 million civil penalty and $57.1 million in past government cleanup costs on Thursday, as well as millions in future costs to resolve a U.S. government lawsuit over a February 2023 train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio. Under a proposed consent decree estimated to be worth more than $310 million, the railroad also agreed to significant safety improvements and training, which includes installing additional safety equipment after the derailment of the train that caught fire and released over a million gallons of hazardous materials and pollutants.
The Atlanta-based railroad will also pay for medical monitoring for health impacts tied to the derailment and release of hazardous chemicals. The settlement will pay for treatment for individual medical needs stemming from the disaster, the Environmental Protection Agency said. Norfolk Southern, which did not admit wrongdoing, said the deal means the company will face no criminal penalties and the settlement is included in the around $1.7 billion in related charges to date for the incident. It added the settlement will not require it to take additional charges.
Hunter Biden’s criminal tax trial delayed to September 5
The start of the criminal tax trial for President Joe Biden’s son was postponed until September 5 from June 20, which Hunter Biden’s legal team requested because of conflicts with a separate criminal trial in Delaware.
Hunter Biden’s attorney Abbe Lowell had argued to U.S. District Judge Mark Scarsi in Los Angeles that the start of a trial on criminal gun charges in Delaware on June 3 created overlap with pretrial deadlines in the criminal tax case.
In addition, Lowell said in court filings he has been pursuing two appeals after Scarsi and the judge in Delaware refused to dismiss the criminal indictments. Hunter Biden has pleaded not guilty to the charges in both criminal cases. Hunter Biden next month will become the first child of a sitting president to go on trial in a felony case.
The Department of Justice charged Hunter Biden in December with failing to pay $1.4 million in taxes between 2016 and 2019, while allegedly spending millions of dollars on drugs, escorts, exotic cars and other big-ticket items.
Judge orders jury and press out of
Trump trial, reprimands witness
The trial against former US President Donald Trump in New York in connection with hush money payments to an adult film star has seen a chaotic day in which the presiding judge cleared the jury and the press from the courtroom and admonished a witness.
Judge Juan Merchan became visibly angry during the questioning of defence witness Robert Costello because he appeared to question Merchan’s authority.
Costello, who Trump’s defence team brought to the stand to attack the credibility of key prosecution witness Michael Cohen, continued to answer several questions after Merchan had already accepted the prosecution’s objection on Monday.
The judge instructed Costello, a former federal prosecutor, that he was not allowed to continue answering after an objection was sustained. In the case of one objection, that was upheld, Costello then said “Jeesh” and rolled his eyes. Merchan then ordered the jurors out of the courtroom and asked Trump’s witness, Costello, to maintain proper decorum in his courtroom.
When Costello continued to scowl at the judge, Merchan blurted out audibly angrily, “Are you staring me down?” He then had the courtroom cleared with the help of loud and cutting instructions from the court staff.
Court transcripts reveal that Merchan forbade comments on his decisions and threatened to have Costello removed from the stand if he did not change his behavior. Journalists and observers were allowed to re-enter the room after a few minutes, and the questioning continued.
Trump’s lawyers have said they do not plan to call any further witnesses after Costello. Closing arguments are expected on May 28. The public prosecutor’s office in New York accuses Trump of wanting to improve his chances of success in the 2016 presidential election by paying $130,000 to adult film actress Stormy Daniels.
The payment itself was not illegal. However, Trump is said to have manipulated documents when reimbursing the amount to lawyer Michael Cohen in order to conceal the true reason for the transaction, making the payments illegal campaign financing.
Trump, who is campaigning to win reelection in November as the Republican Party candidate, has pleaded not guilty to all the charges. If found guilty, he could face a prison sentence.
Trump, without evidence, claims migrants in U.S. illegally ‘building army’ to attack Americans
Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump claimed without evidence on Thursday that immigrants from Africa, the Middle East and elsewhere were “building an army” to attack Americans “from within,” once again using inflammatory rhetoric about migrants in the U.S. illegally.
During a rally in the mainly Hispanic and Black neighborhood of New York City’s South Bronx, Trump sought to portray migrants from China, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and other countries as a violent threat.
“Almost everyone is a male and they look like fighting age. I think they’re building an army,” Trump said to a few
thousand supporters who gathered to hear him in the South Bronx’s Crotona Park. “They want to get us from within.” Throughout his campaign, Trump has repeatedly used incendiary language to accuse immigrants in the U.S. illegally of fueling violent crime, calling them “animals” responsible for “poisoning the blood” of the country. As evidence, he points to individual instances of crimes, rather than aggregate data.
Trump also sought to tie record levels of migrants caught crossing the U.S.-Mexico border illegally with the economic plight of Black and Hispanic voters, arguing, without evidence, that migrants were taking their jobs. Trump is locked in a tight race with Democratic President Joe Biden ahead of the Nov. 5 election. The Bronx rally was part of his effort to exploit Biden’s weakening support among Hispanic and Black voters.
Louisiana Legislature approves bill to classify abortion pills as controlled dangerous substances
Two abortion-inducing drugs could soon be reclassified as controlled and dangerous substances in Louisiana under a first-of-its-kind bill that received final legislative passage on Thursday and is expected to be signed into law by the governor. Supporters of the reclassification of mifepristone and misoprostol, commonly known as “abortion pills,” say it would protect expectant mothers from coerced abortions. Numerous doctors, meanwhile, have said it will make it harder for them to prescribe the medicines that they use for other important reproductive health care needs, and could delay treatment.
Louisiana currently has a near-total abortion ban in place, applying both to surgical and medical abortions. The GOP-dominated legislature’s push to reclassify mifepristone and misoprostol could possibly open the door for other Republican states with abortion bans that are seeking tighter restrictions on the drugs. Current Louisiana law already requires a prescription for both drugs and makes it a crime to use them to induce an abortion in most cases. The bill would make it harder to obtain the pills by placing it on the list of Schedule IV drugs under the state’s Uniform Controlled Dangerous Substances Law.
US forecasters see large number of major hurricanes in 2024
U.S. government forecasters said on Thursday up to seven major hurricanes may form in an “extraordinary” 2024 Atlantic hurricane season beginning June 1. In a May forecast exceeding that issued ahead of 2005’s record-breaking season that spawned hurricanes Katrina and Rita, forecasters expect between four and seven major hurricanes.
Those events are among a projected eight to 13 hurricanes, which could result from an expected 17 to 25 named tropical storms, said Rick Spinrad, administrator of the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
An average hurricane season produces 14 named storms (winds of at least 39 miles per hour or 63 kph), of which seven become hurricanes (winds over 74 mph or 119 kph) and three become “major,” with wind speeds over 111 mph (178 kph).
Warm sea temperatures and falling wind shear conditions at the height of the hurricane season in August and September are expected to contribute to more and stronger storms this year, the forecasters said. “This forecast has higher ranges than 2005,” said lead forecaster Matthew Rosencrans in a news conference webcast from Washington, D.C. “These are the highest ranges we have ever forecast.”
In 2023 there were three major hurricanes that formed among seven hurricanes and 20 named storms, the fourth-greatest number of named storms since 1950. The most damaging, Idalia, tore up the west coast of Florida and made landfall as a Category 3 hurricane.

Indian-origin astronaut Sunita Williams set to fly into space for a third time next month
Boeing’s Starliner first crewed spacecraft to be piloted by Indian-origin astronaut Sunita Williams is expected to be launched between June 1 and 5 after the flight was postponed earlier this month due to a technical snag. Williams, 58, will fly into space for the third time aboard the test flight. A statement from NASA said, “Mission managers from NASA, Boeing and ULA (United Launch Alliance) continue to evaluate a path forward toward launching the agency’s Boeing Crew Flight Test to the International Space Station. The teams are now working toward a launch opportunity at 12.25 pm on Saturday, June 1, with additional opportunities on Sunday, June 2, Wednesday, June 5, and Thursday, June 6.”
Work continues to assess Starliner performance and redundancy following the discovery of a small helium leak in the
spacecraft’s service module, the statement said. It said teams were in the process of completing a follow-on propulsion system assessment to understand potential helium system impacts on some Starliner return scenarios.
Starliner will carry Williams and Butch Wilmore to the International Space Station, marking what could be a momentous and long-awaited victory for the beleaguered Boeing program. An attempt to launch the first crewed test flight for the International Space Station from Cape Canaveral in Florida was postponed on May 6 after a technical snag was discovered moments before the take-off.
Williams received her commission as an Ensign in the United States Navy from the United States Naval Academy in May 1987 and was selected as an astronaut by NASA in 1998 and is a veteran of two space missions, Expeditions 14/15 and 32/33.
Indian students begin turning away from UK universities for Master’s courses
Indian students choosing the UK as their higher education destination have started registering a fall, with over 21,000 fewer Master’s degree applicants than the previous year being registered in official statistics released in London on Thursday.
According to UK Home Office data based on the Office for National Statistics (ONS) figures, there was a 16 percent drop in Indian student applicants over the year ending December 2023 in an overall 10 percent fall in net migration compared to 2022. While the figures will come as a
welcome sign for British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak who has made curbing migration one of his key planks for a general election now set for July 4, the student visa figures will worry universities who rely on overseas student fees.
The fall in numbers follows a visa clampdown on students being able to bring their family dependents, spouses or children, from earlier this year. It comes at a time when university vice-chancellors and diaspora groups are lobbying the government not to safeguard the country’s post-study work visa offer under the Graduate Route scheme.

Canada police warns Hardeep Malik, son of acquitted Air India bombing suspect of potential death threats
The Royal Canadian Mount Police (RCMP) has issued a warning to Hardeep Malik, the son of Ripudaman Singh Malik, who was acquitted in connection with the Air India bombing of 1985.
Hardeep Malik, a Surrey-based businessman, received an official letter cautioning him about potential threats to his life. This comes in the wake of Ripudaman Singh Malik’s murder in 2022, for which two individuals have been charged, CBC News reported.
Despite the lack of concrete evidence, the CBC News report claims that RCMP investigators are exploring the
possibility of the Indian government’s alleged involvement in Ripudaman Singh Malik’s assassination, similar to their alleged role in the killing of Sikh separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar the previous year.
The warning issued to Hardeep Malik falls under the “Duty to Warn” protocol, a measure taken by authorities in British Columbia to alert individuals when their safety is at risk. The RCMP underscored that the threat must be considered likely to materialize.
Hardeep Malik is not the only one to receive such notice; others associated with the Khalistan separatist movement in British Columbia have also been cautioned.
Badhesha, a Democrat, has become the
first Sikh to be appointed to the Fresno County bench and the first Sikh judge in California who observes the practice of wearing the Sikh headdress known as the dastar or pagri, FOX26NEWS reported earlier this month.

According to confessions made by Haoldar, his main task was to de-skin the body of the deceased MP, an art he has mastered being a professional butcher by profession.
Azim, a three-time MP in Bangladesh, came to Kolkata for some treatment purposes on May 12 and initially, he had put up at the residence of his long associate and friend in Kolkata Gopal Biswas at Baranagar also in the northern outskirts of Kolkata.
However, on May 14 he went out of Biswas’s residence and informed the latter he would be coming back on the same day. State police sources said that he went missing since then and his mobile phone was also switched off.
Nirbhaya’s mother speaks out on Swati Maliwal assault case, wants Delhi CM Kejriwal to act
Nirbhaya’s mother Asha Devi on Wednesday demanded stringent action against the culprits who abused and attacked Swati Maliwal, former Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) chief inside CM Kejriwal’s residence.
In an interview, Asha Devi spoke about Maliwal’s fight against atrocities on women and lamented that the upright woman, who stood up for rights for other women was subjected to such abominable treatment by ‘those in power’.
“If Rajya Sabha MP Swati Maliwal is not safe, then what could one expect about the common women,” Asha Devi said. She further said that she knew Swati Maliwal personally as the latter stood with her in Nirbhaya case and also helped many women in distress.
Asha Devi also made an appeal to Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal to act quickly and take strict action against the one, who attacked Maliwal.
When questioned on Kejriwal government’s ‘dilly-dally’ approach to punishing the attacker, she said: “AAP came to power in Delhi while tapping on the anger and outrage of people in Nirbhaya case. Arvind Kejriwal claimed himself to be the son of Delhi, brother of Delhi. It is time for him to walk the talk and take exemplary action.”
Notably, Asha Devi’s 23-year-old daughter, known to the world as ‘Nirbhaya’ was raped and brutally assaulted inside a moving bus in south Delhi by six persons, including a minor before being thrown out of the bus in 2012. She later succumbed to injuries at Singapore’s Mount Elizabeth Hospital.

Supreme Court’s no interim directions to ECI on voter turnout after each phase of Lok Sabha poll
The Supreme Court on Friday refused to pass any interim directions to the Election Commission of India (ECI) to disclose the authenticated record of voter turnout on its official website after each phase of polling for the ongoing Lok Sabha elections. Posting the matter for hearing post-summer vacations, a bench of Justices Dipankar Datta and S.C. Sharma said that passing interim directions at this stage would amount to granting final relief in the petitions and a “hands off” approach should be preferred once the election process is set in motion.
The poll body told the top court that disclosing the scanned legible copies of accounts of votes recorded at all polling stations would cause “chaos” in the election machinery. In its affidavit, the ECI said that any change at the close of the election period will cause hardship and confusion in the electoral process as no time is left for providing adequate training to the polling parties which will be on duty for the last two phases of the election.
Last week, a bench headed by the Chief Justice of India (CJI), D.Y. Chandrachud, granted a week to the ECI to respond to the application seeking directions for disclosure on its official website the scanned legible copies of Form 17C Part- I (Account of Votes Recorded) of all polling stations containing the authenticated figures for votes polled, within 48 hours of the close of polling.
The plea also demanded that the ECI should provide a tabulation of constituency and polling station-wise figures of voter turnout in absolute numbers and percentage form for the ongoing general elections.
Referring to the voter turnout data published by the ECI on April 30 for the first two phases of polling, 11 days after the first phase of polling on April 19, and four days after the second phase of polling on April 26, the plea claimed “dereliction of duty” on the part of the poll panel in declaring election results (of the Lok Sabha and Assemblies through Electronic Voting Machines).
“The data, as published by the ECI in its press release dated April 30, 2024, shows a sharp increase (by about 5-6 per cent) as compared to the initial percentage announced by ECI, as of 7 p.m. on the day of polling,” the application said. The reply document filed by the ECI said that the voter turnout App continuously keeps reflecting data on a live basis and on the other hand, Form 17C is given to agents of candidates after the close of poll on polling day itself as per the statutory requirement.
“The voters and the candidates have a statutory remedy to challenge the election in their concerned constituency, by way of filing an election petition. However, the petitioner in the present application has failed to mention a single instance where such candidates or voters
Delhi University walls defaced with slogans calling for election boycott, two FIRs lodged
Slogans to boycott the Lok Sabha elections were found on the walls at multiple places on Delhi University campus on Thursday, the police said, adding that two FIRs have been lodged in this connection.
The slogans, such as ‘Ek hi raasta Naxalbari’, were claimed by Bhagat Singh Chhatra Ekta Manch (BSCEM), a self-proclaimed youth organization that posted photos of the slogans on its Instagram page on Thursday.
“Under the fascist offensive, we must remember Mao Zedong’s thesis that one of the magic weapons for making a revolution successful is a united front. The united front in Marxism is a broad joint forum of multiple classes based on a minimum common program. In a country like India which is
moving towards a democratic revolution, the scope for such unity is very strong,” the caption read.
“Unity can be achieved on the basis of anything, from a democratic transformation of the society to a revolutionary goal. Today, the country is a boiling cauldron as more and more social forces are coming forward which are opposed to the state’s war on people for corporate loot, including various movements in Kashmir, Manipur, Assam, Nagaland, etc.,” it added.
The police said that during morning patrolling on Thursday, a few slogans were noticed on the campus.
“Accordingly, two FIRs under the Defacement Act have been registered and an investigation has been taken up,” said DDCP (North), Manoj Kumar Meena.
had filed an election petition on the basis of the allegations raised by the petitioner with respect to the General Elections to the Lok Sabha, 2019. This indicates that the allegation of discrepancies in voter turnout data made by the petitioner in the main petition as well as the present application is misleading, false and based on mere suspicion,” it said.
The affidavit stated that the elections for the 19th Lok Sabha are at an advanced stage towards its conclusion and it has been a settled principle of law, that no petition, which may have the impact of either creating suspicion and/or impeding the conduct of the process and conclusion of elections, would deserve to be rejected at the threshold itself.
“There are also certain elements and vested interests who keep on throwing baseless and false allegations, creating an unwarranted atmosphere of suspicion - in the close proximity of time of conduct of every election. It is most humbly submitted that there is a consistent mala fide campaign/design/efforts to keep on raising suspicion and doubt in every possible manner and by misleading assertions and baseless allegations regarding the conduct of elections by the Election Commission of India,” it added.

China placed three defence companies in the US on its list of “unreliable companies” for selling weapons to Taiwan, China’s Ministry of Commerce announced on Monday. The three companies added to China’s list of “unreliable companies” are Boeing Defense, Space & Security, General Atomics Aeronautical Systems and General Dynamics Land Systems.
The sanctions are intended to penalize the US for supplying weapons to Taiwan, which Beijing considers part of its territory. The sanctioned companies will be prohibited from making further investments in China, and their managers will be banned from travelling. When the sanctions were announced, Lai Ching-te of Taiwan’s ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) was being sworn in as the self-governing island’s new President. The latest action adds to a series of sanctions Beijing has imposed on US defence companies for selling weapons to Taiwan.
In September last year, China had already sanctioned the US firms Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman due to such arms sales. Five more companies followed in January. Relations between Washington and Beijing have been very tense for some time, as the US also repeatedly places Chinese companies on its sanctions list. The Biden administration cites escalating pressure from China on
China sanctions three US defence companies for arm sales to Taiwan Israel limits Spanish diplomatic services over Palestine recognition
Two days after Spain announced its intention to recognize an independent state of Palestine, Israel has imposed restrictions on the work of Spanish diplomats in the country. The Spanish Embassy in Tel Aviv and the Spanish Consulate General in East Jerusalem will in future be prohibited from offering their services to Palestinians from the West Bank, Foreign Minister Israel Katz posted on the social media platform X on Friday.
Katz justified the measure by pointing to a statement by Spain’s Deputy Prime Minister, Yolanda Diaz, which he categorized as antiSemitic.
“In response to Spain’s recognition of a Palestinian state and the anti-Semitic call by Spain’s deputy prime minister to not just recognize a Palestinian state but to
Taiwan - including increased military activity both in the air and at sea - as justification for delivering arms to the island. China considers the democratically governed island to be part of the People’s Republic and has threatened to invade on several occasions. However, Taiwan maintains a strong sense of independence, and Lai has not signaled any intention to deviate from this stance.
‘liberate Palestine from the river to the sea’, I have decided to sever the connection between Spain’s representation in Israel and the Palestinians,” he wrote.
In a speech shared on X, Diaz used the controversial slogan, “Palestine will be free from the river to the sea.”
It suggests that there should be a free Palestine in an area from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea - which includes the area where Israel is located.
Diaz belongs to the left-wing electoral alliance Sumar, a junior coalition partner of Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez.
Spain, Ireland and Norway announced on Wednesday that they plan to recognise an independent Palestinian state at the end of May. Israel reacted with indignation to these announcements.
Pakistan forms committee to investigate mob attack on its students in Bishkek
The Pakistan government has constituted an inquiry committee to investigate and ascertain why its students were attacked and assaulted in the mob attack in Kyrgyzstan’s Bishkek on the night of May 17.
Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, who travelled to Bishkek on Tuesday to address concerns of the Pakistani students there, said that till date, over 4000 students have been brought back from Kyrgyzstan.
Addressing the media after his return, Dar said that there are about 10,000 Pakistani students enrolled in different universities in Kyrgyzstan, about 6000 of them in the capital Bishkek alone where
the incident of mob attack occurred.
“Additional secretary administration of the foreign ministry, Muhammad Saleem, will head a fact-finding committee to look into the incident, including the reason for such developments and subsequent reaction of the Pakistani mission and the government,” said Dar.
“The committee will coordinate with the Kyrgyz authorities and review all the findings and developments in Bishkek and submit its report within two weeks,” he added.
Of the 4,036 students who have already returned to Pakistan, 3,233 students took commercial flights while 513 availed the special flight facility arranged by the federal
government. The special flight arranged by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government also brought back 290 students.
The mass repatriation of Pakistani students began after the security situation went out of control in Bishkek last Friday following a viral video of a recent brawl that took place between the locals and Egyptian students. The attack caused serious injuries to many international students mostly from Pakistan. This prompted thousands of Pakistani students to confine themselves in their hostel rooms for several hours.
Pakistan has also called on the Kyrgyz government to ensure that the culprits behind the attacks are arrested and brought to justice.

France arrests man over suspected attack plot on Olympic torch relay
French security forces arrested a man suspected of planning an attack during the Olympic torch relay through the western city of Bordeaux, Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said. The local public prosecutor’s office, however, said that the man had not yet chosen a site for his attack and had not mentioned Thursday’s torch relay.
Investigators confiscated a weapon that could fire rubber bullets. The prosecutors said the suspect had shown interest in the violent and misogynistic “incel” movement, which is characterized by heterosexual men who blame women for their failings in life, romantic or otherwise.
The relatives of the man in his mid-20s stated that he was mentally unstable.
Investigators became aware of the man because of a post about a killing spree 10 years ago in California, in which a student killed six people out of hatred of women. He was taken into custody on Tuesday.

It is the moment to decide Britain’s future, he said, to decide whether you want to “build on the future you’ve made or risk going back to square one”.
Israel’s Foreign Minister calls for resignation of UNRWA Chief
Israel Foreign Minister Katz has called for the resignation of the Commissioner General of UNRWA Philip Lazzarini following the presence of Hamas members at the UN agency in Gaza.
The Israel Foreign Minister said that while Philip Lazzarini is denying the presence of Hamas members at the UNRWA compound. However, there is clear proof that the militant outfit was using UNRWA premises and its vehicles.
“There is proof of Hamas members firing at civilians within a UNRWA facility next to UN vehicles in Rafah. No lie from Antonio Gutteres and Philip Lazzarini will hide the truth: UNRWA is an arm of Hamas,” Katz said.
On Tuesday, the Israel Defense Force (IDF) said that during an operation in the eastern Rafah region, Hamas
members were identified in the UNRWA compound. This compound, according to the IDF, is a central point for the distribution of aid and is a logistics distribution center.

Taiwan reports 49 Chinese warplanes in airspace amid military drills
Taiwan’s Defence Ministry on Friday said it had registered 49 Chinese warplanes in Taiwan’s airspace within 24 hours, the highest number of Chinese daily sorties so far this year. Among them, 35 Chinese military aircraft were spotted crossing the median line of the Taiwan Strait.
In addition, the ministry said it had detected 19 Chinese navy vessels and seven Chinese coast guard ships operating around Taiwan on Thursday. China on Thursday launched a two-day major military exercise around Taiwan, apparently to simulate a blockade around the island.
On Friday, Taiwan’s Air Force also released photos and videos taken on Thursday, which showed the activities of Chinese Navy vessels and coast guard ships in the waters west of Taiwan.
The Chinese military exercises came three days after the inauguration of Taiwan’s new President, Lai Ching-te, of the independence-leaning Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). Tensions across the Taiwan Strait have risen since presidential and legislative elections were held in democratic Taiwan in January.

OpenAI never clawed back any employee’s vested equity, says CEO Altman
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman on Sunday clarified that the company has never clawed back any employee’s vested equity and will never do such a thing in the future. Altman responded to a media report that claimed that the ChatGPT maker revoked employees’ vested equity (or stock option) in the company, following two high-profile departures. Altman said that they will never do this “if people do not sign a separation agreement (or don’t agree to a nondisparagement agreement)”.
“Vested equity is vested equity, full stop,” he posted on X social media platform.
According to him, there was a provision about potential equity cancellation in the company’s previous exit documents.
“Although we never clawed anything back, it should never have been something we had in any documents or communication. This is on me and one of the few times I’ve been genuinely embarrassed running OpenAI. I did not know this was happening and I should have,” he explained. Altman said that the team was already in the process of fixing the standard exit paperwork over the past month or so.
“If any former employee who signed one of those old agreements is worried about it, they can contact me and we’ll fix that too. Very sorry about this,” he posted.

Micron hit with $445 million US verdict in Netlist patent trial
Chipmaker Micron Technology owes computer-memory company Netlist $445 million in damages for violating Netlist’s patent rights in memorymodule technology for high-performance computing, a U.S. jury said on Thursday.
Jurors in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas agreed with Netlist that Micron’s semiconductormemory products infringe two Netlist patents related to technology for improving the capacity and performance of memory modules. The jury also
concluded that Micron infringed the patents willfully, which could lead to a judge multiplying the damages by up to three times.
Representatives for Micron did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the verdict. “We are grateful for the jury’s service, and their recognition of the importance of Netlist’s innovation,” Netlist attorney Jason Sheasby said in a statement.
Netlist won a $303 million verdict against Samsung in the same court last year in a related dispute over highperformance computer memory patents.
Food regulator finds no trace of ethylene oxide in Indian spices
Amid the global furore over the alleged presence of a “cancercausing substance” in certain spices from India, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has cleared more than a dozen samples of spices from MDH and Everest brands.
According to the analysis report, the extensive testing found no traces of ethylene oxide (ETO) in the samples collected from several states.
The rigorous process of testing for ethylene oxide was performed at NABLaccredited laboratories notified by the FSSAI. The food regulator also picked up 300 spice samples of other brands for
Boeing sees free cash burn in 2024 as deliveries remain sluggish
Boeing will burn rather than generate cash in 2024 and deliveries will not increase in the second quarter, the company’s finance chief said on Thursday, as the U.S. planemaker grapples with a crisis that is pinching production of its strongest-selling aircraft.
CFO Brian West told the Wolfe Research Global Transportation and Industrials Conference that he expects Boeing’s full-year free cash flow to be negative, due partly to the delays in deliveries, compared with March’s outlook for positive cash generation in the low single-digit billions. The remarks on the negative cash flow caused Boeing’s shares to fall 7.6% to close at $172.21 on Thursday. The comments add to the company’s problems as production challenges and delayed deliveries to China have weakened a modest 2024 outlook upheld by Boeing just weeks earlier.
Boeing’s jet production has slowed dramatically in the face of increased scrutiny from regulators, airlines and lawmakers following a January incident when a door plug blew off an Alaska Airlines jetliner while in mid-air.

The testing process began after several countries started monitoring spice products manufactured by Indian spice giants MDH and Everest over the alleged presence of a ‘cancer-causing’ agent. Food regulators in Hong Kong, Singapore, Australia and New Zealand warned against using certain products from MDH and Everest over the presence of ethylene oxide at levels exceeding the permissible limit”.
The Spices Board, under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, had said that all spice consignments would be accompanied by a cleared analytical report for ETO issued by the Spices Board. Both MDH and Everest have said their products are safe for consumption.

British tech founder Mike Lynch denies defrauding HP at US criminal trial
Mike Lynch, the tech founder once hailed as Britain’s answer to Steve Jobs, denied wrongdoing at his fraud trial on Thursday in connection with HewlettPackard’s disastrous $11 billion acquisition of his software company in 2011.
Under questioning from his lawyer, Christopher Morvillo, Lynch said he was not involved in the transactions that prosecutors say amounted to a massive accounting fraud at Autonomy, the company Lynch co-founded. HP wrote down Autonomy’s value by $8.8 billion in 2012, saying it had uncovered serious accounting improprieties.
Lynch took the witness stand at the San Francisco trial for the first time earlier on Thursday. He told jurors that others were in charge of accounting and he was focused on Autonomy’s technology and marketing.
The tech entrepreneur defended his company, saying that while Autonomy was not perfect and some things could have been done better in hindsight, it was still a lucrative business.
Lynch and former Autonomy finance executive Stephen Chamberlain face charges of fraud and conspiracy for allegedly scheming to inflate the company’s revenue starting in 2009, in part to entice a buyer.

Elon Musk now says he opposes US tariffs on Chinese EVs
IndoUS Tribune Newsdesk
Tesla founder Elon Musk told tech investors in Paris on Thursday he opposed U.S. tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles (EVs), an about-face from his January warning that trade barriers were needed or China would “demolish most other car companies in the world.”
On Thursday, Musk said he did not favor measures that distorted the market. This month, U.S. President Joe Biden rolled out new tariffs on an array of Chinese imports, including EVs, seeking to support American manufacturing.
The Biden administration has maintained a number of tariffs introduced by former President Donald Trump, while ratcheting up others, including quadrupling EV duties to more than 100%. The White House said the new measures affect $18 billion in imported Chinese goods.
“Neither Tesla nor I asked for these
tariffs, in fact I was surprised when they were announced. Things that inhibit freedom of exchange or distort the market are not good,” Musk said at the Viva Technology conference in Paris via video link.
“Tesla competes quite well in the market in China with no tariffs and no deferential support. I’m in favor of no tariffs,” Musk
said. In January, Musk warned Chinese automakers would “demolish” global competitors without trade barriers.
“If there are no trade barriers established, they will pretty much demolish most other car companies in the world,” Musk said in a post-earnings analyst call at the start of the year.
South Korea to monitor impact of US tariff hikes on Chinese imports
South Korean Finance Minister Choi Sang-mok said on Tuesday the government will closely monitor the impact of Washington’s recent decision to raise tariffs on some Chinese imports. The remark came as the US announced last week its plans to raise tariffs on around $18 billion worth of imports from China, focusing on strategic sectors, such as solar cells, semiconductors and electric vehicles, reports Yonhap news agency.
“While South Korea has been posting export growth for seven consecutive months, the uncertainties in the global economy and trade environment have been growing,” Choi said during a meeting with trade experts,
shareholders reject
proposal to hike royalty to Swiss parent
Nestle India shareholders have rejected a proposal of the company’s board of directors to increase royalty payments to its Swiss parent Nestle S.A., according to a regulatory filing by the company. Shareholders with a total 57.18 percent stake in the company voted against the resolution. The motion called for the royalty paid to its parent to climb to 5.25 percent of net sales, over a period of five years from the current level of 4.5 percent. The increase was proposed at a rate of 0.15 percent per annum.
The proposal was moved as Nestle India
in 2019 had said that it would seek approval of its shareholders every five years for royalty payments to the parent company after receiving investor and proxy firm’s feedback on the issue.
referring to the latest US tariff hikes.
“In response, we need to assess the impact on the South Korean economy based on previous trade dispute cases and the current trade trend between the US and China, and come up with measures to prepare for various potential scenarios,” Choi added.
Experts also urged the government to implement tailored measures for different businesses, including those operating in China and those competing with Chinese firms, as well as to monitor Beijing’s response to the new US tariff policy. Choi added that South Korea will continue to communicate with local businesses to help them maintain competitiveness in the global market.
IMF approves $164.6 million funding for Rwanda
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) on Wednesday announced the approval of 164.6 million U.S. dollars in funding for Rwanda to strengthen its economic resilience against future climate shocks.
The package includes 76.2 million dollars from the Resilience and Sustainability Facility (RSF) and 88.4 million dollars through the Standby Credit Facility, the IMF said in a statement, reports Xinhua News Agency.
“Going forward, the policy mix should prioritize macroeconomic and financial
stability, fiscal sustainability, and the restoration of buffers. Maintaining the strong reform momentum under the RSF will help bolster the country’s economic resilience to future climate shocks,” the IMF said.
Rwanda’s real gross domestic product growth exceeded expectations in 2023, reaching 8.2 percent. Key drivers of this growth included the services sector, construction, and recovery in food crop production despite severe floods.
The IMF recommended that the Rwandan government adopt a carefully planned fiscal strategy to mitigate the impact of last year’s deadly floods, ensuring sustained economic stability and growth.

NBA: ‘This loss is totally on me,’ Pacers head coach admits blunder in game 1 loss to Celtics
The Boston Celtics have taken game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals over the Indiana Pacers after a hard fought battle which resulted in a 128-133 overtime victory in favor of the home team. Following the game, the Pacers head coach took the blame for the loss.
“This loss is totally on me, We should’ve just taken the timeout, advanced the ball and found a way to get it in and made a free throw or two and ended the game But it didn’t happen, and we made some other mistakes,” said Indiana coach Rick Carlisle to reporters after the game.
The Pacers held a five point lead heading into the final minutes of the game and will be ruing the missed golden opportunity to have taken the win at Boston. The Pacers held a three point lead with ten seconds to go and had it not been for a turnover by the Pacers, the Celtics would have been forced to foul and send their opposition to the line. This gave Boston a way back in as an inbounding pass with 8.5 seconds to go was hit for three by Brown, who made no mistake in drowning the corner three point attempt to tie the game 117-117. Celtics outscored their opponents 11-16 in over-time to pick up the victory.

IPL 2024: The way we turned things around and qualified was truly special, Kohli sums up RCB’s season
Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) star batter Virat Kohli said it was a ‘special’ Indian Premier League (IPL) season for the franchise after they qualified for the playoffs following a six-match winning streak in the league stage.
RCB were knocked out of the competition after losing to Rajasthan Royals in the Eliminator match at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Wednesday. But before that, they scripted one of the best IPL comebacks as they finished above defending champion Chennai Super Kings to book a place in the last four after just winning one game after the first eight matches.
Sharing his thoughts on their IPL season, Kohli said he will cherish this always for the character shown by the team on the field.
“We started expressing ourselves, started to play for our self-respect and then the confidence came back. The way we turned things around and qualified was truly special, something that I will always, always cherish and remember, because it took a lot of character from each member of this team, something that we can be really proud of. And eventually, we played the way we wanted to play,” Kohli said in the RCB dressing room.
As always, RCB’s 12th-man army was a vocal supporter of the team throughout the
season and captain Faf du Plessis said he was grateful for RCB’s ‘incredible fanbase’.
“We were extremely down halfway through the season. But still the fans, at every stadium, every match, you can hear the chants from a long way away. And once we got the momentum, we just ran with that. Extremely grateful for our incredible fanbase.”
“Sad that we as a group can’t get those final two steps to get to the trophy. But if I look back on the season, from where we were, to where we finished, I am very proud of the boys,” du Plessis said.
Kohli is anticipated to bag the Orange Cap for the season after finishing with 741 runs including a century and five fifties. He has a distant gap of more than 150 runs with the second batter on the list among the teams alive in the competition.

World No.1 Novak Djokovic dug out of an early hole on Thursday evening to down Dutch star Tallon Griekspoor for a place in the semifinals at the Geneva Open.
The 27-year-old Griekspoor could have won the first set as he looked the better player on the court. The Serbian served at 4-5, 0/40 in the opening set, a game during which he fended off four set points. The top seed escaped with either an ace or a hefty first serve that resulted in a missed return from the Dutchman.

Djokovic then held to love to close the topsy-turvy first set. Djokovic saved all seven break points he faced and converted four of his nine opportunities according to ATP Stats.

No doubt the experience here will help me in future tournaments.”
The youngster from Chennai further emphasized that playing Carlsen on his home turf (Norway) is not a challenge. “I

Shahid Saikat and Richard Illingworth have been confirmed by the International Cricket Council (ICC) to be on-field umpires in the upcoming Men’s T20 World Cup opening match between USA and Canada on June 1. Saikat will become the first Bangladeshi umpire to officiate at an ICC Men’s T20 World Cup when he stands in the USA-Canada tournament opener at the Grand Prairie Stadium in Dallas, Texas.
Saikat, 47, took charge of five matches at last year’s ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup and has also been on the panel at two ICC Women’s Cricket World Cups and the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2018.
He will be joined by Illingworth, who won the David Shepherd Trophy for ICC Umpire of the Year for the third time in 2023 and took charge of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup final between India and Australia in 2023. Richie Richardson will be the match referee in Dallas, with Sam Nogajski as the TV umpire and Langton Rusere in place as the fourth umpire. Nogajski is one of five umpires making their senior men’s ICC tournament debut in June, with Rashid Riaz to make his first appearance in the second match of the tournament between Papua New Guinea and co-hosts West Indies in Guyana on June 2. That match will also mark a milestone for match referee Andy Pycroft, who will bring up his 150th T20I.

T20 WC: New York to host India’s only warm-up match against Bangladesh on June 1
The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Tuesday revealed that New York’s Nassau County International Cricket Stadium will host India’s sole warm-up clash against Bangladesh on June 1 ahead of the T20 World Cup, which is incidentally starting on the same day. The warm-up matches are scheduled to be played from May 27 to June 1 across the USA and at two venues in Trinidad and Tobago in the West Indies.
Men’s T20 World Cup debut will be later on June 2 when Namibia and Oman go headto-head in Barbados. The first of Allahudien Paleker’s four on-field group games will be between the USA and Pakistan on June 6, while fellow debutant Asif Yaqoob will line up alongside Nitin Menon for England’s clash with Scotland on June 4.
Illingworth and Rodney Tucker will be the on-field umpires for the eagerly-awaited Group A clash between India and Pakistan in New York on June 9, with Chris Gaffaney as the TV Umpire. Chris Gaffaney and Alex Wharf will be on-field umpires in India’s opening match of the tournament against Ireland on June 5, with Kettleborough as the TV Umpire.
Kumar Dharmasena, Chris Gaffaney, Richard Kettleborough and Joel Wilson are among the other experienced officials returning for more World Cup action, with the knockout stage appointments to be announced at a later date by the ICC.
don’t think playing Magnus on his home turf is a challenge for me. Usually, it matters to the player playing in his home but it won’t matter so much for me,” expressed a confident Pragg, who will also have his sister Vaishali Rameshbabu play the prestigious Norway Chess Women’s Tournament for the first time.
“I am happy to see an exclusive women’s tournament being introduced in Norway Chess. It is a very good initiative because there are not many tournaments for women. This will encourage other organizations to come up with women’s tournaments too. My sister will also be playing there. I am looking forward to seeing how she will do,” he said.

Jeremy Renner recalls how his muscle memory kicked in during ‘The Mayor of Kingstown’ action scenes
Hollywood star Jeremy Renner is back doing stunts after he nearly died in a snow-plough accident. The actor said that his muscle memory kicked in during the shooting of action sequences. The 53-yearold actor, who suffered blunt chest trauma and orthopedic injuries when he was crushed by the 14,000-pound vehicle in January 2023, didn’t expect to be shooting action scenes again, reports ‘Female First UK’.
However, he’s got stuck in during filming of the upcoming third season of his show ‘The Mayor of Kingstown’ and expects to be fitter than ever in the coming months. During an appearance on ‘The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon’, the host asked the ‘Avengers: Endgame’ actor if he was “back up to 100 percent”, to which he replied: “I don’t know what that is. But I expect to be, like, 150 per cent by maybe the end of the year.”
He further mentioned, quoted by ‘Female First UK’: “And doing stunts was like not on the docket for me because I was barely kind of walking around. But you know I went up and just said ‘I’ll just try it’ and put on these tennis shoes. Let me try it. Muscle memory just kind of happened.”

Cate Blanchett gets trolled after describing herself as ‘middle class’ at Cannes
Hollywood star Cate Blanchett is getting mocked for calling herself “middle class” despite her estimated $95 million fortune. The Oscar-winning actress made this statement during a United Nations press conference at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival.
Talking about her experience as a UN goodwill ambassador and giving refugee filmmakers a platform, she said, “I’m white, I’m privileged, I’m middle class, and I think, you know, one can be accused of having a bit of a white savior complex, but to be perfectly honest, my interaction with the refugees in the field and also in resettled environments has totally changed my perspective on the world.”
Blanchett has been a long-standing activist for humanitarian causes, and she stressed how “utterly grateful” she was for the experience and encouraged others with a platform to create a “dialogue with these people”.
However, this did not go down well with netizens, who immediately started to troll her over the “middle class” claim on social media, reports femalefirst.co.uk.
One said, “You think you’re middle class, Cate Blanchett?”
“I love Cate Blanchett, but in what world is she ‘middle class’, she’s been in two major fran-
chises and is worth an estimated $90 million,” said another.
A user said, “Under no circumstances is a net worth of $95 million middle class!!!”
There were some who defended the actress, saying she may have meant she was “middle class” compared to billionaire showbiz figures.

Guru Randhawa ‘honored beyond words’ to work with childhood hero Babbu Maan
Singer-actor Guru Randhawa, who recently collaborated with noted Punjabi singer Babbu Maan for the song ‘Pagal’, had a great moment during the making of the song as he got to work with his childhood hero.
Sharing his experience, Guru said, “Working with Babbu Paaji was an honor beyond words. It feels surreal to collaborate with the artiste who has been a guiding light for me. He is my idol and childhood hero, and collaborating with him on ‘Pagal’ was a huge blessing for me.”
For Guru, the collaboration was nothing short of a dream come true, marking a significant milestone in his career.
The song ‘Pagal’ promises to be a perfect blend of Guru’s dynamic style and Babbu Maan’s iconic vocals.
Babbu Maan is one of the most loved singers in Punjab. In a career spanning over two decades, he has delivered eight studio albums, besides working in Hindi films. Produced by Bhushan Kumar, the track ‘Pagal’ will hit the airwaves on May 27 on the T-Series YouTube channel.
Camila Cabello says Buddhism helps her cope with pressures of fame
Pop star Camila Cabello shared that she has found several “mechanisms” to cope with the pressures of fame, including embracing Buddhist philosophical ideas. “I don’t think I would’ve changed when I started (in the music industry), because so many parts of my personality today are because of the tools and the skills and ... some adaptive and some maladaptive mechanisms that I had to develop to survive and thrive,” Cabello said on the ‘Armchair Expert’ podcast.
“For example, I’m really into Buddhism.
That would have never happened, because I need those tools - being calm and being able to pull through. But also, it carries over to other life stuff where I feel like I’m wiser than I would have been.”
The ‘Senorita’ hitmaker tasted huge success as part of Fifth Harmony and as a solo artist. But, she is constantly making small adjustments in order to find the ideal balance in her life, reports femalefirst/.co.uk.
“Life is like riding a bike and you’re constantly balancing. It’s like ... ‘Oh, a
little more weight here!’ Just, like, tiny adjustments.” Cabello also spoke about how the COVID-19 pandemic proved to be a turning point for her, reports femalefirst.co.uk. The singer managed to develop several new skills - including learning how to cook and how to drive during the pandemic.
“I grew up fast but then there have been times ... like, for example, Covid when I learned how to drive and I learned how to cook, and I was just living the most normal life.”
‘One Tree Hill’ star James Lafferty insists he never got used to fame
‘One Tree Hill’ star James Lafferty said he “never got used” to fame, even though he first rose to prominence almost 20 years ago when he started off in the show.
The actor told E! News: “It’s surreal for everybody involved, including me. I never get used to (it) but in the best way.”
The star recently got together with fellow co-stars Bryan Greenberg, Stephen Colletti, Paul Johansson, and Craig Sheffer for a charity basketball game and raised money for cancer, and he noted it was such a “gift” to be able to reunite with some of his former castmates for the event, reports femalefirst.co.uk.
James said, “It feels great to play a small part in supporting the (foundation’s) progress. It means the world for us to be drawn back together. It means the world for us to be able to interact personally with the best fans in the world and to be able to do it all for a good cause.
“Just being back in this gym in particular, where we actually shot the show, and being with all the guys who originally played on the Ravens basketball team,
it’s surreal and it’s wonderful,” he said.
“Some of these guys, I haven’t seen for a very

By Dr. Avi Verma
The legendary king of Indian cinema comedy and dance, Govinda, will grace Chicago with his presence in a sold-out show tonight, May 24, at the Matrix Club in Naperville, Illinois. The event, titled “Bollywood Retro Club Night,” is hosted by Gaurav Tuteja of Rajshi Events and promises to be a night of unforgettable entertainment. The excitement kicked off the night before, on May 23rd, with a highly anticipated press meet and greet that attracted members of the Chicago media as well as local and international promoters. This event provided a unique opportunity for the media to interact with the beloved superstar and delve into his illustrious career.
During the press conference, Govinda attributed his tremendous success to the
blessings of his mother. He expressed his deep spirituality and grounded nature, emphasizing that his mother’s blessings were the driving force behind his achievements. Reflecting on his days of struggle in the film industry, Govinda shared that his mother would always remind him, “You are Govind, you are Govinda, you are everywhere,” and advised him to chant the Gayatri Mantra.
In an exclusive interaction with the Indo-US Tribune, Govinda addressed a poignant question about the current state of Indian cinema. His candid response highlighted his concerns about the evolving nature of the industry he has
been a part of for decades.
Govinda also expressed a special connection to Chicago, playfully noting that his nickname, “Chi-Chi,” resonates
with the name of the city. This connection, he said, makes his visit to Chicago even more meaningful.
Govinda’s visit to Chicago will not only be a nostalgic journey through his iconic hits but also a testament to his enduring charm and connection with fans worldwide.
The “Bollywood Retro Club Night” is set to be a spectacular celebration of his contributions to Indian cinema, leaving the audience with memories of a night filled with dance, laughter, and heartfelt moments. Understanding type 2 diabetes: A growing health concern
Type 2 diabetes is a chronic condition that affects millions of people worldwide, including a significant portion of the Indo-US population. Characterized by high blood sugar levels, this form of diabetes is primarily influenced by lifestyle factors and genetic predispositions. Understanding the causes, symptoms, management, and prevention of type 2 diabetes is crucial for maintaining a healthy life.
What is type 2 diabetes?
Approximately 90-95% of people with diabetes have type 2, in which the body doesn’t use insulin properly. This leads to high blood sugar levels as insulin, the hormone that regulates blood sugar,
becomes less effective. Over time, this condition can cause serious health complications.
Causes and risk factors
Several factors increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes:
Genetics: Family history plays a significant role.
Obesity: Excess fat, particularly around the abdomen, can increase insulin resistance.
Physical inactivity: A sedentary lifestyle contributes to weight gain and insulin resistance.
Age: Risk increases with age, particularly
after 45.
Ethnicity: People of South Asian, African American, Hispanic, and Native American descent have a higher risk.
Diet: Poor dietary habits, especially high intake of processed foods and sugary beverages, are major contributors.
Symptoms to watch for Type 2 diabetes can sneak up on you. There are often no obvious symptoms that you are prediabetic, or on the verge of becoming diabetic, besides a higherthan-normal blood glucose level. In fact, some people who have type 2 diabetes have symptoms that develop so slowly they don’t notice them. Sometimes, people who are prediabetic experience symptoms of type 2 diabetes, such as:
Frequent urination
4Increased thirst and hunger
4Fatigue
4Blurred vision
4Cuts or bruises that heal slowly
4More frequent infections
4Losing weight without trying
4Tingling, pain, or numbness in the hands or feet
Even if you don’t have symptoms, it’s important to monitor your health, as type 2 diabetes can be a life-changing disease.
Complications
Type 2 diabetes can make people more susceptible to skin infections, such as sties, boils, and infections around the nails and hair follicles. It can make people vulnerable to yeastlike skin infections and itching. The disease can cause nerve damage and foot problems, as diabetes makes the blood vessels in your feet and legs narrow and hard, which makes it hard for blood to circulate.
People who have diabetes are more likely to also have high blood pressure, which can lead to heart problems or stroke. Type 2 diabetes can damage your kidneys to the point where they shut down.
Managing type 2 diabetes
Management of type 2 diabetes involves lifestyle changes, medication, and monitoring blood sugar levels:
Healthy eating: A balanced diet rich in vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats is crucial. Reducing sugar and refined carbs helps manage blood sugar levels.
Regular exercise: Physical activity helps the body use insulin more efficiently. Aim for at least 150 minutes of
moderate exercise per week.
Weight management: Losing weight, if needed, can significantly improve insulin sensitivity.
Medications: Oral medications and sometimes insulin injections are prescribed to help manage blood sugar levels.
Regular monitoring: Keeping track of blood sugar levels helps manage the condition more effectively.
Prevention strategies
While genetics cannot be changed, lifestyle modifications can significantly reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes:
Maintain a healthy weight: Aim for a BMI within the normal range.
Stay active: Incorporate physical activities into your daily routine.
Eat healthy: Focus on a diet low in sugar and refined carbs and high in fiber.
Regular check-ups: Early detection through regular screenings can lead to better management.
Staying on top of your health with your primary care physician is a good place to start. Regular physicals, including bloodwork, will bring any symptoms to light early when they’re easiest to treat. Tell your doctor if you experience any concerning symptoms.
The Indo-US perspective
The Indo-US community faces unique challenges with type 2 diabetes. Genetic predispositions combined with lifestyle changes due to migration and urbanization increase the risk. Traditional diets high in carbohydrates, coupled with sedentary lifestyles, contribute to the higher prevalence. Awareness and education within the community are vital to combat this growing health issue.
Conclusion
Type 2 diabetes is a manageable condition with the right approach. Through a combination of healthy lifestyle choices, regular medical checkups, and proper management strategies, individuals can lead healthy lives and reduce the risk of complications. Stay informed, stay active, and make health a priority to prevent or manage type 2 diabetes effectively.

Ayurveda inspired tips for overall wellbeing of women
A woman is an integral part of the family or the work place or anywhere for that matter.
She is said to be the backbone of the family. Moreover, the back (Mother) undergoes a lot of jumbles in its lifetime to maintain the overall structure of the body (family). Hence, one needs to value it and take care of it in all the best possible ways.
Keeping oneself healthy is the most effective way to compliment self. Ayurveda proposes following the principles of Dinacharya (self-care regimen) that helps one achieve it. One among them is a prime and the easiest regimenAbhyanga.
Abhyanga- Application of warm oil on the entire body, from the scalp to the soles of your feet,
massaging it in the same direction (Scalp to soles). Practicing this regularly excluding the days of menstruation provides many health benefits for women.
A daily Abhyanga practice restores the balance of the doshas; enhances well - being, and longevity. Abhyanga can give a deep feeling of stability and warmth. It nourishes the entire body, decreases the effects of ageing, imparts muscle tone and vigor to the dhatus (tissues of the body), lubricates the joints and promotes firmness to the limbs, stimulates the internal organs of the body, assists in elimination of impurities from the body, increases stamina, calms the nerves, imparts better and deeper sleep, enhances
vision, softens and smoothens the skin, wards off the wrinkles, makes hair grow lustrous, enhances the recovery from various internal and external ailments as a whole. This “one activity Abhyanga” has a potential to transform a condition of disease at any level to ease.
Hence practicing this in the early part of the day for 15 – 20 minutes on empty stomach should be an integral part of a women’s life. One can use essential oils infused with Sandalwood (Pitta type) or Amla (Vata Type) or Tulsi (Kapha Type) or a blend of all. While making a blend always dilute with a base of coconut oil or sesame oil. Another important way to keeping one healthy in all terms is the use of herbal decoctions. Herbal decoctions are primarily made using tougher plant materials such as roots, barks, seeds and stems. The plant material is simmered in boiling water for 15 – 20 minutes to release the active constituents in the liquid. Thus, herbal decoctions deliver the beneficial properties of herbs in concentrated form and help with various health issues: Digestive problems, respiratory issues, immune support, stress management and pain relief. You can try some of these popular herbal decoction with the following recipes:
Place ½ tsp of dried dandelion root coarse powder in 200 ml of water and bring it to boil in low simmer for 10 – 15 minutes. Turn off the heat, strain and drink 50 –100 ml as desired.
Benefits: Promotes liver health, aids digestion, balances kapha and pitta.
Cumin Seed / Coriander Seed Decoction: Add ½ tsp of the seeds in 200 ml of water and bring it to boil in low simmer for 10 – 15 minutes. Turn off the heat, strain and drink as desired.
Benefits: Clears bloating, improves metabolism, relieves headache, supports circulation, balances pitta & vata.
Ashwangandha Root decoction: Place ½ tsp of dried ashwangandha root powder in 200 ml of water and bring it to boil in low simmer for 10 – 15 minutes. Turn off the heat, strain and enjoy 50 – 100 ml with ½ tsp jaggery.
Benefits: Boosts immunity, relieves stress, nourishes body tissues, relaxes the mind, balances kapha & vata.
Ayurveda understands that a women’s body undergoes a lot of changes in her entire lifetime menarche, motherhood and menopause.

Celebrity make-up artist Kinchangthui Bariamtak, who has worked with names such as Ed Westwick, Akshay Kumar, Huma Qureshi, Amy Jackson, and Sunny Leone, shares some tips on how to achieve the look.
1. Hydrated skin: Start with a well-hydrated base by using a moisturiser or hydrating primer to create a smooth canvas for make-up application.
2. Dewy foundation: Opt for a lightweight, dewy-finish foundation or tinted moisturiser that provides coverage while imparting a natural radiance to the skin.
3. Cream products: Use cream blushes and bronzers. Use very little highlighters instead of powders to add a subtle glow to your complexion. Cream products blend seamlessly into the skin for a luminous finish.
