rime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Brunei Darussalam, the first by an Indian Prime Minister, marks a significant step in enhancing India-Brunei relations. Modi described the visit as productive and reflective of India’s commitment to boosting bilateral ties and advancing its ‘Act East’ policy and vision for the Indo-Pacific. During his talks with Brunei Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah, several agreements were signed, including a Memorandum of Understanding on the operation of telemetry, tracking, and telecommand stations for satellites. Modi emphasized the importance of this visit in strengthening cooperation in areas such as fintech, cybersecurity, and energy, including long-term collaboration on liquefied natural gas (LNG). Both leaders agreed to enhance defense cooperation and connectivity, including plans for direct flights between Bandar Seri Begawan and Chennai. The visit also highlighted their shared commitment to regional stability and countering terrorism.
