COMMUNITY BY JAWAHAR MALHOTRA SUGAR LAND: For many people driving by on a Jumah (Friday) night, it is a square brick building with contemporary battlement design along the water’s edge by the weir of Colony Lakes where hundreds of cars drive in and out of in the late evenings onto the tree-lined First Colony Boulevard. When Aftab Ghesani heard this, he first reaction – and that of others at the Ismaili Jamatkhana - was that it is like that every night. And when you go into the inner sanctum of the prayer hall housed inside the building, you can understand why. The enormous prayer hall is a place with subdued lighting; earthtones; plush carpet that cuts out the noise of footsteps; light brown, straight, unadorned walls washed with scalloped lights and a vaulted paneled ceiling. While it can accommodate about 1,800 people for the ritual prayers, it gives off an aura of peacefulness that allows space and time to repose even when surrounded by others. Since it opened 13 years ago, the common belief was that the Ismaili Jamatkhana was not open to the outside community and only on rare occasions could some invited groups go in to the facility which houses the administrative offices, classrooms and meeting rooms in addition to the prayer hall. “This is a common misconception”, explained Ghesani, who is President of the Ismaili community of Houston. “We have held many functions here, like the Asia Society, and want people to know about us and the purpose of our organization”. Which is what led the Indian Muslim Association of Greater Houston to meet this past Sunday morning at 10 am, even though most of the Metro area received heavy thundershowers, and then stay for a guided tour of the facility and have a catered lunch in the large lobby. fascinated by the tour that Ghesani had given him a few weeks earlier and wanted to share that with the rest of the members of his organization. The tour was part of the IMAGH’s outreach to learn more about other faiths and communities and be more involved in them. Hussain recalled how many in his group still spoke fondly about their visit to the Bohra Jamatkhana. “We want to bring different communities together, to learn from them and also teach them our ways”, he continued as he opened up the presentation. “Respect comes from learning”. The event was emceed
by Roja Pakal, the IMAGH’s coordinator for its Club 65 seniors initiative and pulled together by Saleena Jafry, the coordinator for the Ismaili community. Ghesani, a native of Karachi, Pakistan who has been in the US since 1981, explained briefly how the Jamatkhana was laid out. The term is actually an amalgamation of the Arabic jama’a (gathering) and the Persian khana (place) and is used by various Muslim communities like the Sufis, Ismailis and Bohras to denote their community center and place of wor-

2013 Ram Leela Rich in Color and a Tale Told Well to a Full Auditorium

BY JAWAHAR MALHOTRA HOUSTON: This past Sunday, October 27 marked four years running that the Ram Leela has unfolded on stage at the University of Houston’s Cullen Auditorium on the University Park campus on the city’s southeast side. It also marked the ninth year that the dancer, choreographer and Indian classical dance guru Kusum Sharma has been involved in making this ancient tale celebrating the victory of Good over Evil become a trademark festival for the Bayou City. After it was first performed four years ago at Cullen Auditorium, Sharma has expanded the theatrics each year. This year, Sharma has brought Ram Leela to life through her Kalakriti Performing Arts and judging from the full hall on a Sunday evening, the public’s reaction has been one of great appreciation for her art form. For Sharma, a Punjabi and native of New Delhi, and her husband Vipin (who plays the role of Ram), the Ram Leela has been so much of a part of her upbringing that she has a natural affinity for bringing the ritualistic unfolding of Valmiki’s epic story of the Gods, as
conceived for the television serial by Ramanand Sagar. She loved the Fall season in Delhi when a crispiness in the air brought out people in sweaters to see the versions produced by neighborhood temples with local actors lip-synching their lines as they acted out the roles. “Part of the fun of directing was to see how the actors went through their lines, or certain scenes had to be ad-libbed as well as the actual scenes that acted out well”, said a cheerful Sharma by telephone from her home. She was still a little hoarse from directing the 100-plus cast members, stage hands and more volunteers. It took her and the entire cast over three-months to prepare for the three-hour long performance that they gave this past weekend. Prior to the start of the program, Sunil Thakkar of Music Masala entertained the audience with his special style of humor and overall joviality. The show opened with Kusum Sharma giving a brief speech and appreciation to all the shows sponsors and participants. Leading up to the opening act, Ram and Lakshman were led down the center aisle to the stage as the audience showered them with petals. Sharma was able to pull together a fine production of the Ram Leela because she has a fine eye for the pageantry and complexity of the Ram Leela. Midway through the victory scene, once again this year, cannon-blasts of confetti sprayed the first few rows of the audience. There were also the three firedancing acrobats and blasts of sparkler fireworks on each side that have become a feature from the last three years. And there were pyrotechnics with two last two blasts before the entire cast came forward for their final bows, as the audience rushed the to the front rows to shower them with adulation. Daya’s “One Voice Against Domestic Violence” Gets Enthusiastic Honks

BY PRAMOD KULKARNI HOUSTON: The Saturday morning atmosphere last weekend in the Mahatma Gandhi district of southwest Houston was reminiscent of a street scene in South Asia with its saree stores, dhabas and jewellery shops. And lots of honking! The honking was in support of Daya Houston’s 7th annual “One Voice Against Domestic Violence” initiative held in association with the Houston Police Department. More than 112 community participants joined Daya board members, staff and volunteers in the rally against domestic violence The primary sponsor for the event was the Simmons Foundation. Deepavali Celebrations at Sri Meenakshi Temple
BY CHANDANA GOLLA PEARLAND: The day’s celebrations kicked off with an inauguration event of the 18th Annual Free Community Health Fair. In attendance were the Southeast Memorial’s CEO Erin Asprec, the Mayor of Pearland Tom Reid, and Texas House Representative Ed Thomson. “This is a free service. It’s for the community, so we bring not only free services, but we bring awareness of various things.” said Dr. Vaduganathan, the health fair coordinator. Medical staff from Kindred hospital, UT Medical School, and Southeast Memorial Hospital, Cypress Springs Family care provided cancer screenings, vision and dental screenings, Flu shots, EKG, and blood tests (complete blood count, comprehensive metabolic profile, thyroid test and lipid profile). The day’s celebrations continued with the opening of the various booths and the food court. The booths sold clothing, jewelry, and books. “What brings me to Diwali is shopping, shopping, shopping... they give good deals, discounts for Diwali, so everyone comes here to shop,” said enthusiastic customer, Fatema Plumber. Temple offered a raffle which included prizes such as Round trip to Paris and an expensive, gold necklace. The Indian American Cancer Network registered bone marrow donors. “We work very closely with a national marrow donor program. We’re trying to help other Indians by increasing the number of Indians on the registry... so that those suffering from blood cancer can find a matching donor,” said Sarvesh Phavaraju. The booth registered over 50 donors that day. Meanwhile, in the food court, various Indian caterers served South Indian specialties such as dosa, idli, and vada. Ana Jorgensen said “It’s great that there are so many new foods to try... I love the gobi!” Others enjoyed the fun competition offered by the Rangoli competition and kid’s art competitions. Following the competitions, the auditorium was packed with a full house excited to see the cultural

program which included classical Indian dancing and singing. A main feature of the program included a snippet from Houston Grand Opera’s River of Light musical about Deepavali directed by Evan Wildstein, sang by Cecilia Duarte and Lee Gregory and accompanied by Keith Weber on piano. Tupil Narasiman, Chairman of MTS said the performance was awesome. Padma Golla, the overall coordinator of the Diwali Celebration told that HGO is expected to perform the complete opera in March at the temple. Meanwhile, outside, the kid’s carnival offered train rides, rock climbing, a mechanical bull, petting zoo, and magic shows. “I love the rock climbing wall at the carnival,” said Kani Maninckabasakam, 10. The main event of the day was the Lakshmi puja and was well attended followed by the procession of Silver Ratham. At around nine, the temple commenced a spectacular showing of fireworks. Thousands crowded outside to see the professional
fireworks. Still, the night was not yet over. Later, everyone joined in a circle to dance Garba with an accompanying live music band.

Children’s Diwali Celebrated at BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir
HOUSTON: The BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Houston, held a unique event to showcase the fun aspects of Diwali. On October 26, family and friends gathered at the Mandir to celebrate the “Festival of Lights” with a distinct focus on youngsters. Diwali is the mostly widely celebrated Hindu festival, marking the victory of good over evil and the beginning of the Hindu New Year. However at the BAPS Children’s Diwali Celebration the traditional rituals were combined with patient explanations and fun-filled games to engage a younger audience. Carnival games were set up to illustrate traditions and teachings from the epic story of Diwali. Families participated in events ranging from rock climbing, representing the climbing of a mountain, to making small oil lamps which symbolize the triumph of light over darkness. As children raced from station to station many parents reminisced about their own fond childhood memories of Diwali. Chandrakant Patel a resident of Sugarland, mentioned that as a child in India this would be an exciting time and festive and now today his kids are able to experience the joy of this festival here at the BAPS Children’s Diwali Celebration. Organizers were keenly aware that transmitting traditions from one generation to the next was important to many families in attendance. The inspirer of the festival, His Holiness Pramukh Swami Maharaj, had given his blessing that families should work together to celebrate Diwali. This message was on display as older children guided their younger friends from station to station. The entire event was created by the older children who had volunteered their time for the younger children. With their insights, modern touches were seamlessly incorporated within the event. Traditional Indian snacks and candy were complemented with ice cream and ancient stories were explained using puppets and videos. Reflecting on the scenes of the day, Patel said, “When I see the smiles on my kids as they enjoy the day today, it takes me back to India. A traditional Mandir, festival and traditions is what is not only for the kids but for me too. All this is here because of my guru, Pramukh Swami Maharaj.” Patel’s son, 6-year-old Akshar Patel also shared his amazement, stating, “I got candy, balloons,
and small fireworks today and the other kids talked about Diwali.” Akshar then bounced around the moon walk with excitement. Despite residing in India, Pramukh Swami Maharaj continually inspires devotees all over the world to celebrate their Hindu heritage and customs. These festivals allow for families to meet and celebrate the Hindu festivals and pass on traditions to future generations. The center is set on 11.5 acres among landscaped gardens and includes a collection of Islamic decorative art, exhibition spaces, meeting rooms, private prayer spaces and offices for Ismaili community institutions. The contemporary facility with echoes of historical Islamic elements in its geometry was designed by the Indian architect Ramesh Khosla, whose work includes the former World Trade Center, New York and other structures in Montreal and New Delhi. Texas Governor Rick Perry laid the foundation stone on October 17, 2000 and he was there when the center was formally inaugurated by the Aga Khan, the spiritual head of the Ismailis, on June 23, 2002. The center is actually three buildings, all linked together, with a round multi-pillared connector that functions as a place to leave your shoes and orient you slightly to face the direction of the Kah’ba before you enter the prayer hall. The 150 IMAGH members heard from Shaida Adatia about the Ismaili community and saw a video presentation about the role the current Aga Khan, who is the 49th hereditary Imam of the Khoja Nizari Ismaili’s and is a direct descendant of the Prophet Mohammed’s daughter Fatima and his son-inlaw Ali. Since he first inherited the title in 1957, Prince Shah Karim Al Husseini, the spiritual head of the 15 million Ismailis worldwide, has expanded the renowned work that he spearheads all over the world in education, relief programs, development and maintaining historical Muslim sites. A video showed the current project in New Delhi to restore the 16th century Humayun’s Tomb and uplift the neighboring Nizamuddin Basti area and teach the resident’s as well as train them in artisan and commercial skills. Added to the program were two short presentations on healthcare insurance and the impact of the new Obamacare. Patanjali Yogpeeth (USA) Raises Funds for Uttarkhand Victims HOUSTON: On June 15, the tiny Himalayan state of Uttarkhand was caught unaware by flash floods and massive landslides, trapping and killing thousands of locals, tourists and pilgrims and causing widespread damage to infrastructure and property. Horrific images of gushing waters, submerged villages and shock stricken faces flashed across televisions and newspapers across the world sparking an outpouring of support from the national and international community. The Indian armed and paramilitary forces swung into action spearheading relief operations but two social organizations quickly galvanized relief measures and were the first to reach the calamity stricken areas - Baba Ramdev’s Patanjali Yogpeeth and Bharat Swabhiman Trust. Flagged off by Baba Ramdev, truckloads of food, medicines and drinking water traversed inaccessible hilly terrains to rush lifesaving supplies to those who had been evacuated and had lost their homes and livelihoods in the floods. More than 500 able bodied volunteers helmed by Acharya Balakrishna set up relief camps at railway stations, bus stops and the worst affected areas distributing glucose water, medicines, blankets and food in a calm, organized and efficient way. Patanjali ambulances took the elderly and the sick to makeshift hospitals for treatment while several volunteers were seen applying medical balm and massaging the bruised feet of the elderly who had to walk several miles to safety! On Sunday afternoon, an ensemble of more than 100 actors presented an elaborate dramatic performance: Ram Leela 2013. Organized by Kusum Sharma’s Sri Natraj School of Dance in association with the Kalakriti PerformingArts, the performance exemplified the community’s determination to preserve and celebrate its cultural heritage. On-stage actors and actresses and back-stage volunteers worked and practiced for months to present an eye-popping extravaganza. On Saturday morning, more than 100 volunteers brought to the public their commitment to help confront the scourge of domestic violence. It is but one of the challenges we face in the life we lead here in the United States. It was heartening to see teenagers participate in bringing awareness of domestic violence to public attention. It is this balance we need to maintain in the coming years and decades: celebrating our cultural heritage and also taking on the challenges of the present and the future as they relate to our life here in North America. Farewell to the Little Master How do you adjust to a world without God? That is the question Indian cricket fans are asking themselves after, on October 10th, Sachin Tendulkar announced his impending retirement from international cricket. Millions will remember where they were when they heard the news: Mr Tendulkar, a curly-haired and diminutive Mumbaiker, has, for almost a quarter of a century, been known as the “God of cricket” in a country almost manically obsessed with the game. There is probably no more revered sportsman on Earth. His genius for the game is the main reason for that. Since making his debut for India in 1989, as a 16-year-old schoolboy with a squeaky voice and shy smile, Mr Tendulkar has forged a reputation as one of the best and most enduring cricketers of all time. He has scored 100 international centuries—30 more than his nearest rival, the Australian Ricky Ponting—including a staggering 51 in Test matches, the game’s most gruelling, five-day format. He says he will retire after what should be his 200th Test, against West Indies, in front of an adoring crowd in his native Mumbai. That is another of Mr Tendulkar’s records that it is hard to imagine anyone beating. In Rahul Dravid, V.V.S. Laxman, Anil Kumble and others, Indian cricket has in recent times produced outstanding role models for a youthful nation. Superb players and men, they learned their cricket in humbler times and managed to appear remarkably unchanged by the adulation and fortunes it brought them. But now this crop is gone; Mr Tendulkar is the last of them. And they leave Indian cricket in less certain hands. The Economist

India & China: No Zero Sum Games BY SANJAYA BARU
Participating in a China-IndiaUnited States trilateral discussion at a leading thinktank in Beijing, a young scholar had a question that many around the world increasingly ask. “Today, the US is the number one power and China is the number two power,” said the young man. “By 2025, China will be the number one power and the US will be the number two power. A dialogue between us is necessary to manage the transition.” He then wondered aloud, “But why is India here? What is India’s rank? Where will it be in 2025?” There is no use telling today’s young Chinese that for centuries, and till not long ago, the gap between China and India was never wide enough for anyone to view them as unequal. Linear projections that show China becoming the world’s biggest economy by 2025 also show India becoming the third biggest. But linear projections are statistical short-cuts and history takes its twists and turns. China has, for centuries, been ahead of India in terms of income and manufacturing capability. But in the last two decades, the gap has widened sharply in terms of economic performance, military capability and global influence. Even so, an Indian political leader who would have no problem complaining to a domestic audience about being bullied by a developed Western power, even earning public sympathy for it, would only be inviting derision and mockery if she were to make similar complaints about China. Ordinary people understand that the rich and powerful bully the poor and meek. But no Indian political leader can afford to so complain about China, since China is still viewed by the general Indian public as more of an equal than a mightier unequal. Therein lies the challenge for India’s political leadership in managing the transition phase in the medium term, when China remains more powerful but cannot be treated as such. To be sure, China is nowhere as powerful as the US, but it has acquired the ability to impose its will on individual nations around the world. From Australia to Germany, South Africa to South Korea, political leaders are careful not to rub China the wrong way. Indeed,
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has so far been measured in his management of relations with China. He has been firm when firmness was required and accommodating when accommodation was possible. even US President Barack Obama had to postpone a meeting with the Dalai Lama at one point so as not to upset Beijing, and when the British tried to be brave about it, they were shown their place. Given this context, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has so far been measured in his management of relations with China. He has been firm when firmness was required and accommodating when accommodation was possible. When the Chinese protested against the Dalai Lama’s visit to Arunachal Pradesh, the prime minister let it be known that no one can dictate to India who can travel where within the country. After the Depsang incursion, while some of his advisors advocated a cautious response, he let it be known that Chinese Prime Minister Li Keqiang’s visit would be in jeopardy if Chinese troops did not retreat to their earlier positions. More to the point, during the past decade, India has taken steps to strengthen its defence and surveillance capability along the Himalayas. One of Manmohan Singh’s important initiatives in the Northeast was to build the trans-Arunachal highway and bolster border posts. On the other hand, he has been extremely correct
and cordial in his dealings with China, and has never shied away from recognising China’s emerging regional and global role. While some of Manmohan Singh’s advisors continue to seek a cautious approach, overawed by the current imbalance of power and prosperity between the two countries, the prime minister would be well advised to draw a lesson or two from his other host this week, Russia’s Vladimir Putin. The power-prosperity imbalance between Russia and the US is even bigger than that between India and China. Yet Putin showed recently how Russia’s geo-political clout can make up for its geo-economic weakness. If US mistakes in the Middle East helped Putin raise Russia’s global profile, China’s missteps and hubris in East and Southeast Asia, once called Indo-China, have opened up new spaces for India’s profile to be raised. To be sure, India must continue to focus on its domestic agenda of economic growth and development and maintain good relations with all major powers. In pursuing these priorities, India can work with China, being more open to Chinese investment and increased business-to-business links. Over time, both China and India can resolve their border disputes, making sure that incidents like Depsang do not happen again. However, for a long time to come, both countries would have to earn each other’s trust, given the trust deficit that has built up over the past half a century. Both Manmohan Singh and President Xi Jinping have their “five thoughts” on bilateral relations but the one thought that should define their dialogue this week is that both have an obligation and a responsibility to ensure the peaceful rise of Asia in the 21st century. Neither can afford to play zero-sum games, and both would be better off learning to cooperate while competing, avoiding conflict while contending with the trust deficit. Indian Express. She wasn’t alone, though, and turned to family for support – so much so that for her track “The Sun Won’t Set,” she recruited her half-sister, Norah Jones. their work cut out for them before meeting up with Jones. “I sent a rough mock-up to Norah and she liked it,” Shankar says. “Before traveling to New York, Nitin and I redid a rough arrangement for her to sing over.” The track fell into place naturally when they teamed up in person. “Once we were all in a room together, we decided to chuck everything and just record live, and I’m so grateful we did,” Shankar says. “We were able to really listen and respond to each other and somehow really locked in to perform a live take together beautifully, even though the three of us had never played all together before.”
BY RON CHARLES Jhumpa Lahiri’s exquisite stories about Indians and Indian Americans have been appearing in the New Yorker since the late 1990s, steadily building one of the most powerful bodies of work about immigrants and their children. Her first collection, “Interpreter of Maladies,” won the Pulitzer Prize in 2000, when she was only 33. Her first novel, “The Namesake,” was made into a film directed by Mira Nair. And now her somber new novel, “The Lowland,” arrives in the United States already shortlisted for Britain’s Man Booker Prize and longlisted for the National Book Award, an extraordinary double boost it hardly needs to find an eager audience here in her adopted country. Among other things, this multigenerational story is about “the
intimacy of siblings.” The novel begins with a pair of brothers, 15 months apart, in Calcutta, a city Lahiri knows from visits to her relatives. Though different in temperament, Udayan and Subhash appear to be mirror images of each other and frequently answer to each other’s name. We first meet them as youngsters in the late 1950s, sneaking over the wall of a posh golf club built along a sewer canal in the largely Muslim town of Tollygunge. Udayan, the younger son, “was blind to selfconstraints, like an animal incapable of perceiving certain colors. Tauri aur Wadiyan ki Sabzi (Sautted Zucchini Squash) In Punjab there are two types of squash that are most common – the long, smooth and stout leaf green type, which Punjabis call kadoo and the short, thinner and dark green ones which are called tauri and are commonly called zucchini in the US, although I think they are not the same. We had a tauri vine in our front courtyard in Delhi and they looked different from zucchini, which I only saw when I came to this country. There is a distinct difference in texture and taste between kadoos and tauris. Once cooked, they are reduced in volume but depending on the way they are cooked, the two require additional items to make a flavorful dish. Whereas kadoo is eaten peeled; and when shredded and mixed with besan (chickpea flour) makes great koftas (veggie balls); tauriyan have less bulk and are best eaten chopped and with some wadiyan (lentil dumplings). Zucchini is actually the immature fruit of the zucchini flower but it is cooked like a vegetable. While zucchini is easy to grow in temperate climates, it requires a lot of bees for pollination. It is low in calories, has a delicate sweet taste and is high in folate, potassium and vitamin A. Because it is so tender, zucchini cooks very easily and is easy to digest too. For a tasty dish, you have to pay attention to the amount of water vapor it puts out and be gentle in the way you stir the pieces in the kadai (wok) so that it does not become mushy. And since it is slightly sweet, zucchini is best when cooked with some onions and wadiyan - the Punjabi type are the best - to bring in the spiciness and tanginess. There is no need to add adrak (ginger) or lasan (garlic) to this dish since the wadiyan bring out the taste. Ingredients: • 1 kg tauri (zucchini) • 2 medium piyaaz (onions) – peeled and chopped • 1 or 2 Punjabi wadiyan (lentil dumplings) to taste of spiciness • 2 tbsp tael (olive

oil or vegetable oil) ½tsphaldi(turmericpowder) Spices to taste: 1 tsp namak (salt),1tspmirch(redpepper)
Directions: 1. Wash the zucchini thoroughly and let them drip dry. Cut off the top stalks. It is not necessary to peel the zucchini, but cut them into small pieces. 2. Break the wadiyan into slightly smaller pieces and keep to the side. 3. In the kadai, heat the oil and throw in the onions and wadiyan and stir till they are slightly brown. 4. Now add the turmeric, stir and then throw in the zucchini, sprinkle the salt and red pepper and stir till it is coated. Cover and let it cook in its own steam for 5 minutes over high heat. 5. Take the cover off and check if the zucchini has let off enough vapor and it and the wadi is tender. If the water is low, turn the heat to low and cover again; if not then

return the heat to high till the water is reduced. Stir gently to make sure it doesn’t stick. When the wadi is tender, this means that the zucchini is cooked enough and the dish is ready. Keep covered and turn the heat down to very low for five more minutes, then turn off the heat and crack the cover to let the excess vapor escape.

Movie Review : Mickey Virus
BY MADHUREETA MUKHERJEE Review: We aren’t internet keedas here, but let’s try cracking into Mickey’s (Manish) world of codes, crypts and consoles. This one isn’t so deadly that we can’t decode, or so simple that we just download and ESC (read: escape). So, risk it and hit ENTER! The Delhi cops, headed by ACP Siddhanth (Chaudhari) and inspector Bhalla who can’t tell a ‘hawker’ from a ‘hacker’ (Varun Badola) are investigating a case on cyber crime, where hackers are getting killed in broad daylight. They suspect a hound of hackers who are running this racket, and the only way to vandalize their plot is to find a hacker who can outsmart them and decrypt their devious designs.
There comes Mickey, the fairly unambitious, lazy Delhi boy, whose brain operates faster than any highspeed internet, and his zubaan needs a ‘backspace’ at all times. He is popular as ‘Kung-Fu Chameli’ in cyberspace, and strangely, he meets his woman of web dreams, Kamayani (Elli) in reality. The cops hire Mickey, but as he unscrambles the case he gets ‘spammed’ by a wellprogrammed series of crimes, and he desperately needs to hit Ctrl+S (read: Save) before they take the ‘Mickey’ out of him. Manish is apt for the role, he makes a good debut with confidence and promise. He flavour his lines with Dilliwala twang, though in scenes his repetitive expressions

need to ‘refresh’. From Mickey’s hack-gang, Floppy (Rahgav Kakkar) is funny, and Chutney (Puja) is impressive. Elli looks like an animated creation out of a cybergame. Performance - never mind! Varun Badola kills the other viruses in this game with his brilliant act. Varma allows his characters to flourish in wit and humour. The plot is intelligent; there are laughs (sample: a tee printed - ‘Jab Tak Hai Trojan’), some suspense and surprises too. Though direction is not error-free, it could’ve been more innovative and he often tips the balance between comedy and thriller. This virus won’t crash your system. Watch it!

Forbes Rich List: Mukesh Ambani is India’s Richest, but Dilip Shanghvi Topples Azim Premji
NEW YORK: With a networth of USD 21 billion, Reliance Industries (RIL)’ Mukesh Ambani has retained his title as India’s richest for sixth year in a row, while the country’s 100 richest persons saw their collective wealth soar by a modest 3 per cent in a year, according to Forbes wealth list. NRI steel tycoon Lakshmi Mittal (USD 16 billion) also continues to hold the second position, while Sun Pharmaceuticals Industries’ Dilip Shanghvi has jumped to third place with about 50 per cent surge in his wealth to USD 13.9 billion, pushing Wipro’s Azim Premji to fourth place (USD 13.8 billion). As per US-based business magazine Forbes’ annual list of India’s 100 richest, released today, their total wealth grew by a modest 3 per cent from a year ago to USD 259 billion. “Growth in wealth was lacklustre due to India’s stumbling economy, which has been hit by inflation and a falling rupee,”

Amid the sluggishness, Reliance Industries chief Mukesh Ambani and ArcelorMittal’s Lakshmi Mittal saw no change in their respective networths, but pharmaceutical industry titan Dilip Shanghvi managed to buck the trend with a surge of USD 4.7 billion in his wealth to USD 13.9 billion. Azim Premji’s wealth also rose by USD 1.6 billion, but he could not retain his third slot. Pallonji Mistry, patriarch of construction giant Shapoorji Pallonji Group which is the biggest shareholder in Tata Sons, has moved down one place to fifth rank with a networth of USD 12.5 billion. His younger son Cyrus Mistry last year succeeded Ratan Tata as new Tata group head. NRI businessmen Hinduja brothers have moved up to sixth place (USD 9 billion), from their 9th position last year. Shiv Nadar (USD 8.6 billion) have moved into top-ten at the 7th
place, while Sunil Mittal has also returned to this league at 10th place (USD 6.6 billion). On the other hand, Essar group’s Ruia brothers and Jindal group’s Savitri Jindal have moved out from the group. Adi Godrej has slipped two places to 8th rank (USD 8.3 billion), while Aditya Birla group Chairman Kumar Mangalam Birla has gained one position to 9th (USD 7.6 billion). Anil Ambani has also retained his 11th rank, although his wealth rose to USD 6.2 billion, from USD 6 billion a year ago. In the top-20, he is followed by Shashi and Ravi Ruia (USD 5.5 billion), Micky Jagtiani (USD 5 billion), Savitri Jindal (USD 4.9 billion), Uday Kotak (USD 4.1 billion), Cyrus Poonawalla (USD 4 billion), Anand Burman (USD 3.7 billion), Kushal Pal Singh (USD 3.4 billion), Desh Bandhu Gupta (USD 3.2 billion) and Bajaj Family (USD 3.1 billion). There are a total of 65 billionaires on the list, four more than last year. Some of these have made their fortunes in the Middle East, including Bahrain resident Ravi Pillai (richest newcomer with USD 1.7 billion) of Saudi construction group, Nasser S AlHajri Corp, and retail mogul M A Yusuff Ali (USD 1.6 billion)
of Abu Dhabi-based Lulu Group. As many as 15 new members have entered the top-100 list even as more than half of last year’s rich listers, including Savitri Jindal whose wealth declined by USD 3.3 billion, have seen a fall in their fortunes. The minimum net worth to make to the list has increased to USD 635 million from USD 460 million last year. Forbes said that the list has been compiled using shareholder and financial information obtained from families, individuals, stock exchanges, analysts and regulators. The ranking lists family fortunes, including those shared among extended families such as the Bajaj family, while the wealth figures were calculated based on stock prices and exchange rates as of October 18, 2013. Privately-held companies were valued based on the valuation of similar publicly-traded companies. Deepavali (Diwali) - The Brightest Festival Diwali is a festival which is celebrated in India and Nepal. While it is particularly sacred to Hindus, practitioners of other Indian religions also celebrate it, and Jainist, Hindu, and Sikh communities all over the world commemorate the holiday with smaller festivals of their own. The timing of this holiday varies, since it is based on the Hindu lunar calendar, but it is generally celebrated in the fall. Diwali festivities in India involve everyone, not just the religious faithful, and the holiday is a major event in the Indian year. The festival celebrates the triumph of good over evil; in Hindi, Diwali means “festival of lights,” and people light rows of lights to commemorate heroic figures in Indian mythology who triumphed over the forces of evil. It is also a propitious time for new endeavors, and many people clean their homes and open all their windows and doors to welcome luck and good fortune during Diwali. The
exchange of gifts is also traditional during this holiday, and many people host dinners and parties. Regional traditions vary immensely when it comes to celebrating Diwali, because each community has developed its own unique way of celebrating this holiday. Technically, the holiday is actually five days long, with each day representing a different facet of the festival of lights. In many communities, people pick one day of Diwali in particular to celebrate, often with fireworks and other large public festivities. Numerous myths and stories are associated with Diwali. Many of these myths center around the defeat of evil demons, or the exoneration and freedom of wrongfully oppressed people. The holiday celebrates religious elevation and enlightenment as well. Many festivals also honor specific Hindu gods like Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, and Ganesha, the god of auspicious or new beginnings. In
many regions of India, people also exchange traditional Diwali greetings when they encounter each other on the street; these greetings express a mutual desire for good luck and fortune in the coming year. If a person happens to be visiting India during Diwali, he or she should be prepared to be swept up in the festivities. Many communities essentially shut down for the celebrations, and it’s a great opportunity to learn about Indian history and culture first hand. Many people are happy to share their religious and cultural traditions with curious and respectful visitors. Diwali is also quite fun, with fireworks, performances, dinners, and other events for celebrants. In other regions of the world, people can visit Indian communities to see the festivals on a smaller scale.

32 November 01, 2013 6th ODI: Kohli, Dhawan Gun Down 350 Again! BY SIDHARTH MONGA NAGPUR (ESPN Cricinfo): Push the boundaries, shift the goalposts, change vocabularies. Three hundred and fifty no longer inspires awe. Not when Indian batsmen batting on flat Indian pitches surrounded by quick outfields with only four fielders outside the circle and two new balls to kill any chance of reverse swing. With Shikhar Dhawan’s assured century at the top, and Virat Kohli’s 61-ball one at No. 3 the third-fastest by an Indian, challenging his own record of 52 balls - India became the first team to have chased down 350 or more twice, both of them in this series, and both without much frenzy. The belief and the absolute absence of any slogging was remarkable once again, but India did face some nerves this time around. The match was doing a pretty fine job of retelling the Jaipur ODI story - Dhawan was dropped early, there was a big opening partnership, and Kohli was bursting through the target - when Dhawan played a rare low-percentage shot and exposed Suresh Raina and Yuvraj Singh. Mitchell Johnson duly removed them, and 62 off 48 required became 35 off 18 at one point. Kohli, though, pulled out some of the most incredible shots of his innings, driving chest-high balls for fours wide of long-off, to take India through with three balls to spare. With this result the series remained alive, and George Bailey, who might have had reason to believe he had booked his Ashes spot with a 114-ball 156, will have to put in the drawer possible plans of going home early for Ashes preparation. Alongside Bailey, adding 168 for the third wicket, was another Ashes candidate, Shane Watson, who scored a century. The two did seem to be struggling against spin, with Australia 89 for 2 after 22 overs, but Watson did enjoy some luck as Ravindra Jadeja overstepped when he edged a slog-sweep to point. Once Bailey
started taking on the spinners, the wheels came off, India began to bowl poorly, and a colossal 261 runs came in the last 28 overs. As the hitherto respectable figures of all the bowlers took a beating, Bailey reached a host of landmarks. He beat the records for most runs in a bilateral series by an Australian or a captain, becoming the second-fastest man to 1,500 runs, and overtaking Misbah-ulHaq as the leading run-getter this year. In the end, he was left with a rueful smile, half marvelling at the quality of the batting, half resigned to the playing conditions and the pitch and the outfield. MS Dhoni, although he won, shared the views about the lopsided nature of the contest, but at one level you can’t take away
from the composure Kohli, Dhawan and Rohit showed for a majority of the massive chase. It was as if they didn’t acknowledge the enormity of the task of maintaining a run rate of seven an over for 50 overs. There was no anxiety, no need to hit out, even if Rohit - for example - struggled to find the gaps early in the innings. Glenn Maxwell, who later took a diving catch at point off a free hit, will rue dropping an easy offering from Dhawan when the batsman was 19 off 22. Crisp shots and lovely placement remained the feature of the rest of the 178-run partnership as Rohit made up for a slow start with two sixes off Glenn Maxwell in the 29th over. He picked out deep midwicket off a long hop, but that only hastened the
chase with Kohli’s entry. From the moment Kohli drove the fifth ball he faced for four through extra cover, he knew he was good for an encore of Jaipur. A few blinks later, the partnership for the second wicket was worth 50 runs, out of which Dhawan had scored just nine runs. Kohli was 40 off 26 then. Dhawan, who was cramping by the time he reached his hundred, walked across next ball, and was bowled, giving Australia an opening. Before Australia could enter that opening, though, Kohli brought up his fifth consecutive score of fifty or more. He would soon make it a third consecutive year with 1000 runs or more. There would be a hiccup before the win, though. Johnson, who had been kept back for the middler order, was brought back on, and he accounted for Raina and Yuvraj in the same over. Out came Dhoni, and India suddenly slowed down. James Faulkner and Johnson both began to get the ball to move away from the right-hand batsmen, and slowly the asking rate began to climb. Dhoni told Kohli to wait for Johnson to finish off, and that the big over can come in the last four. Johnson finished off with three overs to go and 35 to get. Kohli had seen enough. His proximity to the hundred - his 11th in 69 chases, behind only Sachin Tendulkar’s 17 in 242 attempts - didn’t matter. He would charge down the wicket, the bowler would drop short, and he would still manage to drive him to wide long-off. When Australia plugged that gap, he began going wide long-on with similar success. Pak Seeks Series Win SHARJAH: Pakistan have never won a bilateral series against South Africa despite coming close a number of times. Four times out of six, the two teams have gone on to the last match with the fate of the series in the balance, only for South Africa to come out trumps every time. However, with their experienced limited-overs names back in the squad, Pakistan would feel they have a chance to topple a South African side not having its best year in ODIs. South Africa have lost 10 out of their 18 matches this year, including a series against New Zealand at home and more recently, a series in Sri Lanka. It’s the first time since 2004 that they have a winloss ratio less than one. Pakistan, on the other hand, have beaten India, West Indies and Zimbabwe in bilateral series. Only four rating points separate the two teams and a series win will help Pakistan march ahead of South African and occupy the fifth place in ICC rankings. There are obvious areas of concern for Pakistan. For a team that has played more than 20 matches this year, that only three of its batsmen have scored more than 300 runs reflects poorly on its batting. Misbah-ul-Haq has had a stellar year, but the young batsmen on whom Pakistan have invested haven’t paid back yet. So it’s another chance for players like Ahmed Shehzad, Nasir Jamshed and Asad Shafiq to establish themselves.

Patna Blasts: Is Ranchi’s Sitiyo Village the New Terror Address?
Azamgarh in Uttar Pradesh, Bhatkal in Karnataka … and now will Sitiyo in Jharkhand, practically in Ranchi’s backyard, be known as the new address of Indian Mujahideen (IM) terror? Investigators probing Sunday’s blast in Patna say all four suspects -- Mohammad Imtiaz Ansari, Mohammad Tarique Ansari, Mohammed Toufiqe Ansari and Mohmmad Noman -- belong to a village that lies just over 2km from Ranchi. And it was here the conspiracy to attack Patna was hatched. The group’s boss is alleged IM operative Mohammad Tahseen Akhtar, a resident of Bihar and an aide of IM leader Yasin Bhatkal. Akhtar gave the suspects lessons in making improvised explosive devices (IED). The arrest of Imtiaz in Patna on Sunday provided the key break. In the evening, his
house in Sitiyo was raided. “We found electric fuses, wires, a handbook on making pressure cooker bombs, JIhadi literature and a photo of Osama bin Laden,” said additional director general of police SN Pradhan. Experts are working on a pen drive and some CDs that were found in the house as well. The arrest of Imtiaz also led to the detention of Toufiqe, Tarique and Noman. Police claim all of them are in the age group between 21-25 years. Imtiaz is an uncle of Toufiqe’s, who died in Patna on Monday morning. Akhtar had been frequenting Ranchi and had met Imtiaz a couple of months ago, said additional director general of police SN Pradhan. Eight unidentified people supported the IM module in their execution of the Patna plan, said a senior police offi-
cer on condition of anonymity. Jharkhand’s vulnerability as a potential terror centre was first established in 2002. Two Pakistani terrorists - Zahid and Salim -- who were allegedly involved in the Kolkata American Centre attack -- were gunned down in Khirgaon village of Hazaribagh district. Later, the state was found to have a link with the banned Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) too. In 2011, SIMI’s Madhya Pradesh chief Abu Faizal was arrested from a house in Jamshedpur. In 2012, police arrested a Kashmiri youth from Hazaribagh’s Palwal area, who was allegedly planning attacks in Delhi. In March 2013, one Manzar Imam was arrested in Ranchi in connection with the 2008 Ahmedabad serial blasts.

Govt Decides to Take Away Five Gas Blocks from RIL NEW DELHI: The government has decided to take away five gas discoveries announced by Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) in the KG-D6 basin, off the coast of Andhra Pradesh. These five blocks are believed to hold gas worth $10 billion (about Rs. 62,000 crore). British Petroleum Plc has a 30% stake in the block. The Directorate General of Hydrocarbons, the oil regulator, had recommended that eight gas producing blocks be taken away from Reliance as it had failed to submit plans to commercially exploit the fields. It has been alleged that RIL had been hoarding its discovered gas so that it wouldn’t have to sell it at the prevailing price of $4.2 per unit. Gas prices have been revised to $6.7 per unit wef April 1, 2014. But petroleum minister Veerappa Moily had, on October 9, approved the decision to take away five of these blocks. The company has been allowed to retain three of the blocks under review. Reliance has announced 18 oil and gas discoveries in the KG-D6 basin. There is no dispute over the other 10 discoveries. “The contractor (RIL) should be
asked to relinquish areas pertaining to five discoveries (814 sq km) with immediate effect,” sources familiar with the development said. The RIL spokesperson refused to comment on the development. But in August, RIL executive director PMS Prasad had written to the oil ministry: “…projecting RIL as a defaulter and forcing it to relinquish discovered resources will not only hurt investors but considerably reduce the chances of many of these discoveries ever being produced”. Ambani and British Petroleum CEO Bob Dudley had met finance P Chidambaram and Moily on October 18 and had also made a detailed presentation to show RIL had not defaulted on the production. RIL, in its August letter, had also said it has “spent enormous amounts of time and money on bringing these discoveries to fruition” and would “suffer immensely if pushed to a situation of forced relinquishment of rightful discoveries.” RIL was awarded the KGD6 block in 2000 and has been producing gas from three fields since September 2008-09.
