BY PRAMOD KULKARNI HOUSTON: Bullying has taken on more traumatic dimensions in today’s social media. It is no longer restricted to childhood and the playground, but is affecting people of all ages and across personal, social and business realms, possibly leading to depression, and even suicide.

Daya, the community organization which serves South Asian families, presented a discussion titled “Our Experience, Our Voice: Exploring our social reality in the digital age”, at Rice University’s Ley Student Center on Sunday afternoon, September 14. The seminar was co-hosted by the Rice University’s South Asian Society.

At the outset, Daya Board Member Dr. Shaila Patel explained the organization’s services to help victims of domestic violence. “Founded in 1996, Daya’s services have grown in response to client needs.

In 2013, Daya served 310 clients, amounting to five new clients per week.”

The seminar was held as part of Daya’s young adult initiative to create awareness of today’s social realities, Dr. Patel said.

The stage for the interactive sessions was set by seminar moderators Dr. Sindhu Idicula, professor of psychiatry at Baylor College of Medicine, and Anand Ramaswamy, Daya volunteer and marketing manager at Envision Global Leadership.

Together, Sindhu and Anand reviwed the nature of various social media apps such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat.

“We may think of Snapchat as being temporary, but it is out there forever,” Anand explained.

Discussing the nature of cyber bullying, Sindhu and Anand said it involves “sending mean messages or threats to someone’s email or cell phone, spreading rumors online or through text, stealing a person’s account information to send damaging messages, pretending to be someone else online to hurt another person, and even creating a fake profile.”

“Social media is somewhat disconnected,” Sindhu suggested. “It allows us to say things we won’t

to someone face-to-face. In the old days, you could get a break, but now cyber bullying can be 24/7.”

Sindhu and Anand displayed statistics from the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) survey on youth behavior risk surveillance.

The CDC reported on the results of cyber bullying: “As many as 29.9% felt sad or hopeless, 17% considered suicide, 13.6% made a plan about suicide, 8% attempted suicide and 2.7% had injuries that required treatment.”

“According to the United Nation’s World Health Organization, India has one of the highest youth suicide rates in the world. It is the leading cause of death for South Asian females between the ages of 15-24,” Anand explained.

Next came the most heart wrenching portion of the seminar wit a high school teacher coming on stage to explain how her battle with bullying in school led to depression and estrangement from her mother.

This, despite the fact that she is an accomplished educator with a PhD in education.

The father was also on stage to explain how the family coped with the difficult situation.

“I was bullied in school from the age of 11. Kids wouldn’t let me sit next to them on schoolbus, they yelled ‘Gandhi’ as slur,” the victim explained. “There were frequent fights with my mother and I wanted to disappear into the background.”

The concurrent depression followed victim back to Houston after college and the problems were compounded with parental pressure to get married. At one time she even stabbed herself with a pen.

The path to recovery started when a psychiatrist friend talked to the victim’s parents and started her treatment with medicines and therapy.

After a break, the attendees separated into breakout sessions, one for the parents and another one for youth/young adults.

These sessions afforded the attendees an opportunity to discuss their individual issues and express their thoughts and concerns.

The seminar concluded with Sindhu and Anand providing information on tools and resources that could be used to combat cyber bullying.

A Feast, Blindfolded in Darkness, to Understand Challenges of the Blind

HOUSTON: When the main entrée was served it all started to get a bit more difficult and it felt much easier keeping one’s eyes closed behind the sky blue cardboard blindfolds than trying to keep them open.

The pleasant female voice of the server was reassuring, with a soft touch of her palm against the shoulder. “Here’s your chicken,” she said gently, placing the plate in front of me. I nodded, muttered a thank you and reached out for my knife and fork.

They were where I had left them after finishing off the bowl of salad, which I had been able to visually “spot” before placing the blindfold on. Then the lights had been turned off and there were loud exclamations of delight, some shrills of laughter and commotion all around as the room full of 80 people took on the challenge of trying to finish the salad – and sipping from their wine or other drink – from the table laid out for a three course dinner. Most turned to each other, pointing cameras, hoping that they would get a picture of the others at their table. Behind the blindfolds, you could still experience the spill of bright bursts of flash photography, accompanied by titters of joy.

“This is so much fun,” said my neighbor, echoing an often repeated sentiment.

The night had started conventionally enough at the Lighthouse for the Blind building on West Dallas near Shepherd Drive, with a social hour in the hallway and front entrance lobby over drinks and a few hors d’oeuvres as the mostly Indian crowd came together last Friday, September 12.

After they moved in to roundtables set for dinner in the dining hall, they donned white plastic aprons, in case they made accidental spills, and placed the masks over their foreheads.

Lighthouse President Gibson Duterroil – known to most of his staff and Board as Gib – egged the people on to put on the accessories “in case you make a spill”, explaining that the experience “will heighten your sense of what a blind person has to deal with.” He described how the Lighthouse has been started 75 years ago in 1939 by Nellie Mae Wimberly, a legally blind teacher, and James G. Donovan, a prominent lawyer, as the Harris County Association for the Blind which was a daycare for the blind as there were no other opportunities for them.

Over the years, the Lighthouse began teaching sewing skills and the manufacture of household items like pot holders, brooms and so on. In the 1950’s, under its first paid

guests were able to hear from the inspiring life experiences of Sandhya P. Rao, a young woman who has overcome severe physical hardships and her our visual impairment to become a lawyer who works with US District Court for the Southern District of Texas in Houston and in the Board of the Lighthouse.

Unable to walk due to severely brittle bones, Rao’s fingers “read” from her speech in Braille as she described how she was born with severe osteoporosis and has broken every bone in her body at least once in her life.

At 18 months old, doctors discovered that her optic nerves were being compressed but surgery damaged the nerve in her right eye rather than correct it, leaving her with par-

executive director, Geraldine Rougagnac, the Lighthouse moved to 3530 West Dallas, which today houses the agency’s Industrial Division.

Since then the Lighthouse has helped the blind to learn Braille and many new skills so that they can enter the workplace and lead productive lives. The Lighthouse serves 9,000 to 11,000 people each year out of an estimated 78,000 who are blind or visually impaired in the Houston area. “We want you to be able to see what they can do, but we need donations to provide the technologies for this to happen,” the affable Duterroil added.

of its Directors and members – Ashok Garg, Pradeep Gupta and Prakash Roopani - are on the Board of the Lighthouse. Club 24 President Asha Dhume said the event was “an opportunity to bring awareness in a most impactful way to the needs of the blind and the good work that the Lighthouse does” and was coordinated by Manisha Gandhi, Nat Krishnamurthy, Lakshmi Murthy and Pradeep Gupta.

After people fumbled with their entrée and tried to identify what the vegetarian and non-vegetarian meals (catered by Mandola’s Italian restaurant) were, they were asked to take off the blindfolds and describe their experience. Most were exhilarated and Dhume described how this type of setting was a huge hit in a couple of restaurants in San Francisco and elsewhere. Krishnamurthy related how he had experienced this at a similar event in Singapore years ago and wanted to explore the same in Houston. “At Club 24, we want to reach the mainstream and find different ways contribute to society,” he added.

Continuing lightheartedly, Rao described how at age 5 she attended West University Elementary School and learnt Braille, “but my Dad had to first learn Braille,” she joked. The Lighthouse got Braille books for her and she went for classes every Wednesday, when she also learnt to play the piano.

Rao warmly remembered a woman who would transcribe the music and print it out in Braille for her, and then Rao would memorize it all.

“The Lighthouse brought reading and music into my life and my adamant parents instilled a love of learning in me and urged me to pursue my dreams,” Rao said beamingly.

“And my sister made me laugh and awakened in me a love of competition.” Confident in her capabilities, Rao graduated from Rice University and later went to Stanford University to get her law degree.

“My dad (Dr. Potu N. Rao) retired early as a cancer researcher and went with me to Stanford to help,” she recalled, adding, “I am more appreciative of what I have. Time is a gift you must not squander.”

HOUSTON: Why do we conduct clinical investigations to prove the benefits of yoga? Are the effects seen in the laboratory similar to those described in the ancient scriptures? Are the results described by the sages still applicable today as the environment and the food we eat is radically different? These were some of the thought provoking questions Dr. Shelley Telles raised during her research based presentation to a packed audience at India House and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston last week.

Dr. Telles is the Director of Patanjali Research Institute at Haridwar and one of the most prominent researchers of yoga. She was invited as the Chief Guest speaker at the renowned Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, NY. She holds an MBBS and PhD in Neurophysiology and has spent years conducting experiments to study the mental and physical effects of yoga, pranayama and meditation on the human body.

According to her, “people are skeptical” and if we are to popularize yoga there is a need for scientific evidence. Experiments are conducted as scientifically as any other clinical investigation - energy expenditure, autonomic variables, blood flow and brain waves of the subjects are measured using state of the art equipment. There is also a strong emphasis on qualitative analysis which is asking the subjects how they feel after a yoga or meditation session.

Dr. Telles described some randomized controlled trials she has supervised and stated that there is a correlation between the ancient texts and present studies. In a study on the effects of various meditative practices, she found that sensory perception and sleep patterns are enhanced after meditation. There are three kinds of sleep – light sleep, deep sleep and dream sleep. Deep sleep is restorative and promotes growth in children and repair in adults while dream

sleep wipes out unnecessary daytime memories. However if one is prone to excessive dreams, the body’s restorative powers are reduced. Dr. Telles found meditation improves deep sleep and reduces dream sleep.

In a survey, 23% of software professionals were found to be taking anti- anxiety medications as well as experiencing muscular discomfort and dry eye or lowered tear formation. The findings of a two month study on 200 software professionals showed those who practiced yoga reduced their “techno stress” while the group which relaxed but did not practice yoga showed no improvement.

Yoga has been used by Dr. Telles in the rehabilitation of blind children who after only 3 weeks of practice showed reduced fear levels and an improved sense of hearing.

Hostility levels reduced in girls in a remand home and in an interesting study on a group of 69 elders, she found 60 minutes of yoga and meditation a day improved memory, gait, balance, sleep and lung functions in them.

Fat cells in our bodies produce Leptin which is a natural appetite suppressant but most people override the body’s signal and overeat.

Dr. Telles found that practicing yoga helped one heed the signal better and thus sustain weight.

In answer to a question about why yoga is better than going to the gym, Dr. Telles remarked that yoga “is a lifestyle which impacts a person’s emotional wellbeing, alleviates stress and helps one face stressors with greater resilience.”

After hearing the proven benefits of yoga, an enthusiastic crowd rolled out their yoga mats and followed Dr. Telles through 45 minutes of chanting cum yoga exercises.

During her visit to Houston, Dr. Telles also met with doctors and researchers at the MD Anderson Cancer Center to explore the possibility of using herbs manufactured by Patanjali Ayurved Ltd. to benefit people with cancer.

Scene Behind the Scenes

BY ARIF MEMON HOUSTON: The act ended and the audience was clapping for the artist, they took a bow and the curtain fell – the concert had just ended.

It had been over 17 hours for the team and all were dead tired but their work had not ended yet, they had to pack it all and load them into trucks and then maybe call it a day.

When a local promoter takes up a concert first thing they do is sign up a venue and set a date which is normally about 2-3 months ahead of the concert, then the National promoter or the technical team of the artist send in the Technical Requirements which is known as the RIDER in the technical terms.

DMMS based in Houston has over 30 years of experience and has handled various concerts and artist’s like A R Rahman, Strings, Atif Aslam, Daler Mehendi, Mika Singh and Rahat Fateh Ali Khan to name a few. Once the team is in place the RIDER and the budgets have been approved then DMMS

(Technical Directors and Production Manager) start talking to the venue regarding the requirement like POWER, FORK LIFTS, STAGE, and sort them out.

The day of the show begins for a concert at around 7am, when there are trucks lined up on the back of the stage to load in the equipment, the works starts and goes on in a clockwork precision as the things have to be done in a certain manner, the lifts for the Sound and Lighting Trusses are placed and tied to the ground and then the lights are put on the trusses. Some years ago we used to stack the speakers next to a platform on the stage level itself but now with the new technology they have become smaller in size and so we make a line of them (LINE ARRAY) and hang them from the truss itself.

Around 1 pm they all break for lunch which would be mainly sandwiches or pizza and some soda and water. After that back to work.

Around 3:30 or 4 pm the band starts to come in for the sound check and this takes normally

about 2-3 hours to balance them and get them to sound good, here is the real test of the Sound Engineer. The difference in balancing a western band and an Indian band is very wide and DMMS having experience in doing these kinds of jobs are at hand when it is being done.

The show starts – the Star is on stage – the audience is thrilled and that is when DMMS and its team takes some rest but not for long as they have to be on their feet and keep looking out and praying that it all goes well.

This year DMMS has been fortunate to handle all the concerts done by HUMTUM Radio and Rehan Siddiqi and the response that they have got from the concerts has been tremendous. DMMS is looking to tie up with other local associations and promoters all over the US to have quality technical production WITHIN THE BUDGETS of the promoter.

Forthcoming Modi Visit Galvanizes Indo-Americans

BY HAIDER KAZIM HOUSTON: The Indo-American community in Houston is enthusiastically looking forward to the forthcoming visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to hear him spell out his plans for development of his country and provide a new impetus to growth of India-US ties.

The visit, from September 27 to 30, has created such an enthusiasm that a large group of Houston community leaders will be traveling to New York to participate in the community reception to the prime minister on September 28, the largest ever such reception to an Indian prime minister in the United States.

“The visit will open a new chapter in the Indo-American relations because he has won a very clear mandate in the last 30 years on a development and governance agenda,” said Ramesh Bhutada, a prominent businessman who worked tirelessly in building an overseas wave for Modi during the election campaign.

“The whole world is watching Modi after his decisive victory and we are excited to hear his plans,” said India House President Jugal Malani who will be traveling to New York to attend the community reception and other meetings.

Some 20,000 people are expected to take part in the community reception at Madison Square Garden, one of the world’s most famous indoor arena, located in midtown Manhattan. The tickets of the reception, which is free of charge, were booked early and the remaining seats had to be allocated to winners of a lottery from among thousands of applicants.

Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to arrive in New York on September 27 for the annual session of the UN General Assembly. Obama is expected to host a small working dinner for him on September 29, rarely given to a visiting foreign leader. The two leaders will then meet for substantive talks on Sep-

The next performer Hans Vermeersch had traveled all the way from Belgium to be a part of this show. He has the unique achievement of being a solo violinist from Belgium who specializes in playing the music of Rabindranath Tagore, Qazi Nazrul Islam, and several other Indian based themes like the Ramayana, etc. He is the founder and lead violinist of the Rajhans orchestra which has toured all over the world with their IndoEuropean fusion music and have also played with the Indian Army in Flanders Fields.

His passion for Indian music and specially Tagore compositions was very evident in his hour long presentation when he played one piece after the other with effortless ease capturing the audience with his impeccable strokes on the violin and his playful charm.

Although not hailing from Indian roots, he immediately made a connection with the audience as they enjoyed the sounds of the monsoon, “Jhoro jhoro”, the autumn leaves, “Shoroto aalor”, the romance of “Tumi kemon kore” and the drama of Ravana’s battle woes with his army when he fought Lord Rama.

The icing on the cake was the final presentation of the night by the immensely talented Houston trio of Raja- Biplab and Balkar.

The three took everyone to a new musical height difficult to surpass. As the night grew, so did their musicality and the understanding between Raja Banga, the local Tabla favorite, Biplab Samadder the well-known local violinist and Balkar Singh, the man with the golden voice was just perfect. In keeping with the theme of the show , “Confluence”, they brought together different streams (genres) of music. They mesmerized the audience with an introductory piece based on raga Kaushik Dhwani (also known as Bhinna Shadaja, or Hindoli) in Jhaap taal and Teen Taal, then went on to a playful raga Pahadi in the light/semi classical genre in Taal Dadra. This raga derives its melodic concepts from the folk tunes of the hills. Balkar stunned everyone with his original composition of a ghazal in raga Mishra Kirwani and they ended the night with a soothing bhajan

Learning Samskrtam with Laughter A Novel Approach to an Ancient Language

BY PADMASHREE RAO HOUSTON: Even Lord Ganesa must have been smiling when an audience of all ages waited with curiosity on August 29, that Friday evening of Ganesa Caturthi. It was the introductory class of the “Easy Sanskrit (Sulabha Samskrtam)” camp in the Chinmaya Smrti hall at Chinmaya Prabha, Houston.

Soon, curiosity melted into light-hearted joy when Swami Ramakrishnananda, the acarya from Chinmaya International Foundation (CIF), Veliyanad, introduced everyone to the beauty, grace, poetry, and timeless value of the Sanskrit language, with easy humor.

From the very first minutes of that opening class, it was obvious that learning Sanskrit from Swamiji was going to be a hilarious adventure!

With curiosity giving way to eager interest, the audience came back the next morning on August 30. All night before, the tune of the great poet Kalidasa’s “Thatham thatham tham thathatham thatham tha…” from King Bhoja’s story that Swamiji had narrated, had been repeating itself in many brains! The way Swamiji had harmonized the interpretations of “Tat Tvam Asi” in deep, yet simple, words had been an eyeopener. There was something fascinating about the way this Swamiji was teaching the ancient language of our scriptures – it was like Sanskrit never before.

The word had spread around in Houston.

Those who had thought that they will just attend the introductory lecture came with

The acarya and author of the “Sulabha Samskrtam” courses in many formats (homestudy, online, DVD etc. at www.chinfo.org ) has made it his life’s mission to make Sanskrit a familiar and loved language. He illustrated how knowing just basic Sanskrit can open the doors to greater understanding. In his concluding session, he presented a few of the very familiar verses from the Bhaja Govindam and the Bhagavad Gita, and helped the audience to read in the light of what they learned so far. To get such insight into a realm that had seemed so unreachable made everyone feel grateful for this unique Samskrtam camp, straight from the land of Sri Adi Sankaracarya.

Nobody wanted that camp to end; such was the magic of the Sanskrit classes taught

When Swamiji concluded and praised Chinmaya Prabha Houston for the excellent organizational support during the camp, the Houston audience of almost two hundred Samskrtam students felt reluctant to leave - the rap tunes, the “rice, mustard, jilebi” jokes, and “the T-dal vs. Cdal” dilemma really made the “Sulabha Samskrtam” camp an experience hard to forget!

18 September 19, 2014 BJP: Think Beyond Modi Wave The BJP’s third straight drubbing in the by-elections, particularly in Uttar Pradesh, after Uttarakhand and Bihar cannot be overinterpreted as a pointer to the national mood where the Narendra Modi phenomenon sustains broadly.

But the party needs serious introspection on the brazenly divisive campaign it ran in UP, where it’s eyeing power in 2017.

In some ways, the party’s electoral pitch led by Yogi Adityanath was reminiscent of its 2008 bid to dislodge Sheila Dikshit in Delhi in the aftermath of Mumbai’s 26/11.

The attempt backfired for its reliance on the macabre. Hoping to exploit the terror strike that shocked urban India, its CM aspirant VK Malhotra went around seeking votes on the promise of sending Parliament House attack convict Afzal Guru to the gallows.

The people of Delhi weren’t impressed. They returned Dikshit to power on the strength of her work.

The Samajwadi Party’s Akhilesh Yadav had no such credentials to flaunt in UP. But his task and that of his father, Mulayam Singh Yadav, was made easier by contradictions inherent to the Yogi’s anti-Muslim agenda and the “development for all” promise that had fetched Modi a thumping mandate.

The politics of fear Adityanath--and myriad RSS outfits at his disposal--knitted around the so-called Muslim ‘love jihad’ flew in the face of Modi’s call for a 10-year moratorium on societal conflict.

It generated apprehensions that the PM looked the other way in tacit approval of the Sangh’s strategy to make Hindus vote as a monolith.

But the game plan had holes. The free hand BJP chief Amit Shah gave to Adityanath wasn’t a study in isolation. It coincided with the marginalisation within the organisation of the party’s known faces in UP: Murli Manohar Joshi, Rajnath Singh, Kalraj Mishra and Varun Gandhi.

A structured sociological project would explain better the anatomy of the vote that felled the BJP. On first glance it seems that these leaders’ exclusion from the campaign--not to mention the short shrift they got in Delhi--could have alienated the forward castes that rooted upfront for Modi in the parliamentary polls.

The BJP’s other mistake ostensibly was of losing sight of the voters’socio-economic profile. Daily wagers abound in hundreds of thousands in UP. They toil daily for a square meal, a prerequisite for which is communal peace, not curfew.

Here the Hindu mobilisation the party attempted against ‘love jihad’ was at cross purposes with the dreams it sold them of a quality life a little over three months ago.

The moral the party would miss at its own cost is that when two-timed, the electorate punish hard. They withdraw affection at the first sign of betrayal.

The NDA allies would be better off without xenophobes and rabble rousers.

EDITORIAL/COMMENTARY India & U.S.: Bounds of Good Will

BY DANIEL MARKEY What would it take to turn the USIndia relationship from a budding, if tumultuous, romance into a committed, cooperative partnership?

The question has plagued policymakers in Washington for the past decade, and it was surely on the Barack Obama administration’s mind recently as a string of top US cabinet officials visited New Delhi, paying their respects to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s new government and setting the stage for a summit in Washington later this month. Despite warm and apparently productive meetings that spanned a wide range of strategic, commercial and military topics, the question lingers. The grey cloud of scepticism hangs overhead mainly because, over the past several years, red carpets and fine words have too rarely been matched by tangible accomplishments.

The stakes, of course, are far greater than any upcoming summit. For Delhi, the US offers a potential means to accelerate the expansion of India’s national power and prosperity, whether through access to high technology armaments or through billions of dollars in private sector investment.

For the US, India represents a rising power in Asia and the allure of a massive market for American goods and services.

With these aspirations in mind, both sides are inclined to emphasise their similarities, starting with shared political principles and practices. Secretary of Defence Chuck Hagel, for his part, observed that India and the US are unusual for having political systems in which “the son of a tea seller” and the “child of a Kenyan father” can rise to become prime minister or president. The mantra of a “natural partnership” between India and the US has been mouthed religiously by leaders in both capitals ever since the last BJP government sat in Delhi.

A shared attachment to democracy undeniably opens the door to trust and understanding in ways that are never quite managed with non-democratic states. Wars between democracies are — as so many international relations theorists inform us — histori-

For theoretical and practical reasons that are widely appreciated, we have the luxury of taking for granted that military conflict between India and the US is inconceivable. Sadly, this is not true for many of the other players in Asia.

That said, the commonalities of democracy have never been enough to pull India and the US into a trusting embrace. Too many irritants, not to mention genuine differences of national interest, have got in the way.

The Devyani Khobragade incident is but the latest in an intermittent series of spats that have cropped up between Washington and Delhi over the decades. These spats suggest an immaturity in the relationship, for on neither side have the leaders quite figured out how to manage minor differences in ways that serve the greater good.

To their credit, both Modi and Obama have taken early steps to sweep prior diplomatic and personal slights under the carpet in an effort to pick up where the Manmohan Singh government lost steam. Early policy announcements, such as India’s opening the door to greater levels of US direct investment in defence industries and Washington’s renewed push for the Defence Trade and Technology Initiative, offer a glimmer of hope that the two can take their cooperation to a higher level.

In other words, Modi and Obama are off to a fine start. But even leaders of enormous and powerful states are bound by the realities of domestic politics, as well as by the behaviour

of other states in the international system. Indian and US interests in the context of global negotiations on trade and climate change, for instance, will remain at odds because of their vast disparities in wealth and development. In these areas, the average Indian citizen simply has different priorities than the average American, a reality their elected officials ignore at great peril.

Likewise, in the regional context, even though India and the US generally see eye-to-eye on the threat posed

by Islamist terrorism, they have long disagreed on how best to deal with Pakistan. In particular, Indian strategists chafe at US military assistance and arms sales to Islamabad, which US policymakers have tended to perceive as the cost of winning and sustaining Pakistan’s cooperation (however inadequate) in tackling alQaeda and enabling the US military presence inAfghanistan. Compounding that difference, as US forces withdraw from Afghanistan, Indian anxieties about a Taliban resurgence could easily translate into greater frustration with Washington for leaving Kabul in an all-too-precarious position. Here too, US officials are sympathetic to Indian concerns, but Delhi’s preferences have been outweighed by the Obama administration’s other strategic and political calculations.

Historically, all allies and close partners have had divergent interests.

The operative question is whether they have other, more compelling reasons to cooperate, like a common adversary. One could imagine, for instance, that a more belligerent China could lead Delhi and Washington to put other differences aside. But that is not the world in which we live, at least not yet, and as Hagel took great pains to observe, Washington would prefer to “avoid the traps of rivalry” with China and recognises plainly that India — like nearly all other Asian states — would rather not have to choose between the US and China. Cancer is the leading cause of death by disease in children and adolescents, according to the National Cancer Institute, yet funding for pediatric cancer research falls far below that for adult cancers. You can help stop this disease in its tracks—in a surprisingly simple way.

During Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month in September, Stripes Convenience Stores will launch Stripes Stores Celebrates Tomorrows, a multistate campaign aimed at raising more than $1 million in one month for The University of Texas MD Anderson Children’s Cancer Hospital.

For every dollar donation at more than 650 store locations in Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico, cus-

tomers will receive a point-of-purchase mobile to sign and display, as well as double coupons for free in-store items. In addition, the James B. and Lois R. Archer Charitable Foundation will match all donations dollar for dollar.

“Every dollar counts when saving the lives of children with cancer,” says Eugenie S. Kleinerman, M.D., head of MD Anderson Children’s Cancer Hospital. “Since opening our doors in 1941, MD Anderson has saved countless lives, cared for children with grave diagnoses and worked to ease the burden of cancer. But cure rates in many pediatric cancers have not improved in more than 20 years.

This campaign will help change how kids are treated for numerous cancers,

while maintaining their daily routine through education and recreation programs.”

One hundred percent of donations from the Stripes Stores Celebrates Tomorrows campaign will go directly to helping kids with cancer. This includes research to improve cancer treatments for patients nationwide and MD Anderson Children’s Cancer Hospital’s Pediatric Education and Creative Arts Program, one of only two privately accredited K-12 hospital schools in the nation.

“Cancer disrupts the lives of every member of a pediatric patient’s family,” Kleinerman says. “So treatment needs to address the disease and help kids and families maintain a sense of normalcy.”

Katarina, age 15, was a straight-A student when she was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma in 2013. The school at MD Anderson Children’s Cancer Hospital offered her a retreat from her cancer and the help she needed to maintain her strong grades.

Now in remission, she dreams of becoming an oncologist.

“Children’s health is central to Stripes’ pillars of giving and they recognize cancer touches far too many of our children,” Kleinerman says. “We are enthusiastic about this opportunity to align with Stripes and help children fighting cancer celebrate many tomorrows.”

VSGH Gears Up for Durga Puja Celebration

BY SANCHALI BASU HOUSTON: It is that time of the year again and the air is filled with sweet nostalgic memories of sights, sounds and smells associated with the Durga Puja, all welcoming the goddess in all her glory.

The Vedanta Society of Greater Houston (VSGH), like every year is getting ready to celebrate Sri Du-

rga Puja again this year on Saturday, September 27, at the center at 14809 Lindita Drive, Houston, TX -77083. The puja will be performed

by Swami Kripamayananda, head minister of the Vedanta Society of Toronto, under the tent in the open air following the tradition in India.

It is always a very purifying experience watching the Ramakrishna Mission swamis performing the Durga Puja since they are carried out with unequaled sincerity and devotion. With the VSGH choir singing devotional songs as the puja is being conducted, the chanting of the mantras by the pujari swami, the soothing sound of the blowing of the conch shell (shankh) accompanied by the rhythmic beats of the drum

(dhaak), invoking all good spirits and eliminating everything negative, the goddess seems to come alive. Arati is performed, followed by the Pushpanjali and all devotees gather in a spirit of well-being and camaraderie.

The idol of Ma Durga will be carried to the puja mandap early in the morning to the sounds of the drumbeats and conch shells and installed there. The puja will start at 9:30 a.m. The worship will end with Pushpanjali around 1 p.m. and fruit and lunch prasad for all attendees will be served after that. The VSGH book stall will have books available for sale for adults and children, and the Welcome desk will allow new members to register.

It was exhilarating to have BITSians from 1954 batch to 2009, along with their families, reunite for the event.

Katy Gideon Celebrates Sixth Anniversary with a Big Bang

Henna Tattoo and Nail art became one more central attraction in pulling moms and girls like crazy.

Dinkar Nandwana, of batch 2007, had ably put together and emceed the program. Krishna Vavilala, a native Houstonian and the senior most alumni of Pilani from batch 1954, presented Prof. L K Maheswari with a memento who thanked him for the services rendered to BITS, Pilani.

Prof. L K Maheswari, after he receiving his Phd in Electronics from Pilani, has joined the Institution in 1971 and served as Vice chancellor of BITS till 2010 and then as an Advisor till July 2014. Prof. Maheswari shared some of his most memorable and challenging experiences during the expansion of BITS from a single campus at Pilani to four campuses increasing the college enrollment four-folds.

With great sense of pride he mentioned that BITS management was approached by Government of Andhra Pradesh and Dubai to set up

its branch in Hyderabad and Dubai respectively.

He affirmatively stated that BITS stands out from most of the Indian colleges as it admits students solely on merit and not based on quotas or reservations. He also shared the challenges faced by BITS management and his role in introducing the All-India Entrance Examination, called BITS Admission Test (BITSAT) for admitting students in its undergraduate program.

With great pride he announced that BITSAT has set a gold standard among all other competitive exams in the country.

Clinical Trials: Offering New Hope

For the majority of patients diagnosed with cancer, standard chemotherapy and radiation treatments often prove to be very successful in shrinking or killing cancer cells.

Unfortunately, this isn’t the case for everyone. For patients who need an alternative to standard therapies, physicians often recommend participation in a clinical trial.

According to the American Cancer Society, only 5 percent of adults diagnosed with cancer each year participate in a clinical trial. Not all trials are about alternatives to standard therapy.

Another reason to participate in a trial is to help physicians determine which of two proven treatments may be better. Finally, studies have shown that doctors and institutions that participate in research often provide a higher level of care overall.

In the following article, Texas Oncology’s Dr. Gury Doshi discusses clinical research trials as a whole – as well as those currently offered in your community.

BY GURY DOSHI Clinical research is critical in identifying the most effective treatments for cancer patients. By examining how patients respond to different medical approaches for various types of cancer, clinical research studies address scientific challenges and identify better ways to treat, diagnose, and prevent cancer-related diseases.

Ultimately, the results of previously conducted trials drive how we take care of patients today.

Are clinical trials available for all patients with cancer?

Clinical trials are available for all types and stages of cancer. Eligibility is determined by the parameters of individual clinical trials, and the requirements vary based on the treatment being tested. Eligibility for participation may include age, gender, cancer stage and type, medical history, and previous treatments.

How are clinical trials typically conducted?

Clinical trials are conducted over a series of steps, each designed to answer a specific question: • Phase I – determine safety of a drug in humans, identify the safe dose range and identify

possible side effects Phase II – involve a larger group of patients, and determine drug effectiveness and safety • Phase III – include a larger group of patients, confirm drug effectiveness, monitor side effects, compare drug to current available therapy, and collect additional safety data • Phase IV – after drug has gone to market, continue to collect/ observe safety data in the patient population and monitor side effects Where is the research conducted?

Clinical trials are conducted at both large academic institutions and community-based cancer centers.

Texas Oncology is a communitybased oncology practice with 150 locations throughout the state, and on average, has more than 100 open national clinical trials within 129 locations. Through our affiliation with US Oncology Research, Texas Oncology has played a role in 50 FDAapproved cancer therapies, nearly •

one-third of all cancer therapies approved by the FDA to date.

How do clinical trials benefit the patient?

Clinical research participation allows patients access to therapy that is otherwise not available. For example, in lung cancer, the standard treatment options include two or three possible chemotherapy regimens. A clinical research trial offering a new targeted therapy for lung cancer provides an option that is not yet available, or in this case, a fourth option. The trial may yield a positive result in terms of delaying disease progression, providing a therapy that is better tolerated or even improving quality of life.

Patients who participate in clinical trials are truly on the front lines of cancer research, helping to discover new treatments for cancer that could mean the difference between life and death for future patients. While not all clinical trial patients see their personal health improve, all patients ultimately provide a tremendous service to others. With every clinical trial, the medical community learns more about the best ways to treat cancer.

Mama’s Punjabi Recipes

Hatch Pepper Di Sabzi (Sauteed Hatch Pepper) In the southern US, a large green pepper which is very hot is usually available during the summer months in large quantities. These are called “hatch peppers” and for six weeks are plentiful and really inexpensive.

In India, these types of peppers are not available, and the closest thing is bell peppers which aren’t as big as they are in the US. They are called “Hatch” because they are grown in the Hatch valley, which is an area along both sides of the Rio Grande River in New Mexico.

Hatch peppers are part of the Capsicum family and produce large spicy seeds inside the top part, just below the stem. Their color can be green, although some varieties can turn yellow, orange or brown. The hatch peppers can range in heat from very mild to some which are spicier than jalapenos, but most of those available at local grocery stores are mildly spicy.

So, though not a typically Indian vegetable, I have cooked it in a Punjabi style and the dish not only tasted good with a nice fresh aroma but had the crunchiness similar to cooking with bell peppers. It can be combined with other vegetables like onions and potatoes and the peppers are large enough to be stuffed with mashed potatoes, rice or even minced meats.

This recipe is easy to prepare and can be made fast in 10 minutes – 5 minutes on high heat and 5 minutes on low heat - and is a tasty side dish that can be eaten with roti or paranthas. Some people even eat it with pasta. So, if you don’t have much time to cook, try this easy, fast and nutritious recipe.

Ingredients: • 15 large Hatch Mirch (green Hatch peppers) • ½ cup besan (chick pea flour) • 3 tbsp tael (olive oil or vegetable oil) • 1 tsp sarson ke til (mustard seed) • ½ tsp ajawain (carom seeds) • ½ tsp haldi (turmeric powder) • Spices to taste: namak (salt), mirch (red pepper), lasan (garlic powder), garam masala, amchoor (mango powder)

Directions: 1. Wash the Hatch peppers and dry with a soft cloth. Slice them lengthwise and remove the seeds and the top stalks and keep them in a plate to one side. Some people may want to cut them into small or medium pieces.

2. In a frying pan heat the oil over a medium flame. Throw in the mustard seed, turmeric and hatch peppers, stir to mix. Cover and let it cook in its own steam for 10 minutes over high heat.

3. Take the cover off and check for tenderness. The Hatch peppers should not become too soft, but should stay slightly firm. Stir gently to make sure it doesn’t stick.

4. Now add the besan, salt, pepper and ajawain and mix to coat. There is no need to add any water. Cook

These insects can quickly eat into the kernels of the wheat, rice or lentils and eat into a large part of them, leaving dust and sticky webs that nest with their larvae.

Even though we live in environment controlled homes, the same infestation can happen with grains which are stored for a long time inside the pantries, even if they are kept inside plastic or glass jars with lids. To avoid this, it is important to store the lentils, rice, flours, beans and other grains in plastic bags and place them in the refrigerator drawers, but not in the freezer section.

Movie Review: Finding Fanny

BY SRIJANA MITRA DAS So, Finding Fanny reveals not one but two surprising ladies - Deepika and Dimple, who run away with this lustrous film. Angie (Deepika) is the daughter-in-law of Madame Rosalyn (Dimple), two lovely widows living in the Goan village of Pokolim, a place that’s gently fallen off the map. Time quietly passes Pokolim by until its postmaster Ferdie (Naseeruddin) has his proposal to Stefanie Fernandes returned, unopened after 46 years.

Angie’s determined to help devastated Ferdie find answers. She enlists the rusting Impala of Ruben-like painter Don Pedro (Pankaj Kapoor), lusting after amply endowed Rosie, the group driven by Angie’s snarling, stubbly ex Savio (Arjun). Do they find Fanny - and love?

Finding Fanny sails on the fresh breeze of Deepika’s smooth performance, her lonely Angie happy, yet tremblingly vulnerable, her

face covered with a lace-like tension when she asks Savio, “Are you...married?” Alongside, the movie’s mast is Dimple’s unabashed, terrific Rosie, whose backside drives Pedro to paroxysms of painterly lust, who throatily screams, “Stupppid! I’ll castrate these dogs one day!”

Naseer as bumbling, fumbling Ferdie is the perfect foil to the luminous ladies - he recalls a desi Mr. Bean, showing just enough spark to sidestep being a has-been. As sardonic Don Pedro, Pankaj Kapoor has the funniest lines, delivered with sleazy flourish - “You Casanova of the Konkan!”, he goads Ferdie, while Arjun Kapoor makes a knucklesucking sexy Savio, who adores Angie but can’t say it - till she climbs atop him on a gorgeous, phosphorescent night.

Finding Fanny is funny, dark, yet bright, a shimmering ride through a Goa far from the tight-rooted Trikal, the touristy Dil Chahta Hai. Its drama keeps surprising - but also meanders, including around an overacting Russian and an unnecessarily macabre cat. It evokes an Almodovar-Anderson-Marquez-in-Goa feel, but occasionally, its cleverness grows obvious while little details - catch the changing colours of Ferdie’s petrol can - are overlooked.

However, these are small creases on an otherwise scrumptious cake. Move your fanny for this one. For the most part, it is utterly, bitterly delicious.

India Gears Up to Put Mars Mission in Orbit mands to test-fire the liquid apogee motor(LAM)engineforfourseconds.

Once in orbit around the red planet, MOM will study its atmosphere, mineralogy and morphology. More than the results of the scientific studies, the mission will serve as a starting point for India’s interplanetary exploration.

RAIPUR: Northern Knights 133 for 4 (Williamson 53, Devcich 39) beat Mumbai Indians 132 for 9 (Pollard 31, Styris 3-21, Southee 3-24) by six wickets.

A substandard batting performance from defending champions Mumbai Indians led to their elimination from the Champions League as Northern Knights won their third qualification game in a row. An all-round display from Knights handed Mumbai their second loss in three matches, a six-wicket defeat that ensured Knights and Lahore Lions qualified for the main tournament.

All three teams were in the fray to advance to the next stage and Mumbai had to win the match, by any margin, to qualify. But once they were put in to bat, their task became an uphill one when they were reduced to 46 for 5 by the Knights seamers in the 11th over. The lower order helped them recover, but the chase of 133 was made easy by the Knights openers who steered them to another convincing win.

Desperate to get a strong start, Mumbai never got in the groove as Trent Boult and Tim Southee stifled them with their nagging line outside off, conceding only 11 in the first four overs, and accounting for Michael Hussey. First-change Scott Kuggeleijn conceded 15 in the fifth over, but Scott Styris ensured Knights retained suffocating control over proceedings, running through Mumbai’s batting with three wickets. discuss ways to accelerate economic growth, bolster security cooperation, and collaborate in activities that bring long-term benefits to both countries and the world,” the White House had said in a statement earlier while formally announcing the visit.

“They will also focus on regional issues, including current developments in Afghanistan, Syria and Iraq, where India and the United States can work together with partners towards a positive outcome,” the White House had said adding that Obama looks

forward to working with Modi to fulfill the promise of the US-India strategic partnership for the benefit of both their citizens and the world.

After a dinner on September 29, the two leaders are scheduled to meet at the White House for a substantive talk on September 30. “The fact that there will be interactions over two days is a signal of the importance we place on the US-India relationship,” said Caitlin Hayden, Spokesperson of the National Security Council.

While Modi’s Joint Address to the US Congress could not happen due to the November elections, a large number of lawmakers are believed to have requested a meeting with the Prime Minister. Organisers of Modi’s trip are having a tough time in scheduling these meetings. Modi has also received a request for meetings from the top American business community both in New York and Washington DC. With economic development his key priority, Modi is expected to interact with the American business community in both New York and Washington DC. The visit will mark Modi’s first trip to the US since his party swept to victory in general elections in May. In 2005, the US State Department had revoked a visa that Modi had for travelling to the US in the wake of the 2002 riots in Gujarat.

Kashmir Willow Under Water, Cricket Bat Industry on Sticky Wicket

BY JASVINDER SIDHU NEW DELHI: The cricket bat industry in Jalandhar and Meerut is bracing for a crisis as the recent floods in Jammu and Kashmir have washed away Kashmir willow, worth crores, used for making bats.

The industry is not only predicting a shortage of raw wood in the coming days, but a steep increase in price, which will hit Ranji, under-19 and budding cricketers. Established players may not be affected as most use bats made of imported English willow, which are far too expensive for the local players who prefer

staffs made from Kashmiri wood.

“We have information that whatever willow they had in their yards has either been swept away or damaged by the flood waters. It is bad news for the industry,” Paras Anand, director of marketing at SG, a Meerutbased bat manufacturer, told HT. “Our Kashmiri suppliers are not disclosing the extent of damage but if the inputs we are get-

The willow trees grow best around the Jhelum River but production hubs like Pulwama, Bijbehara, Baramulla, Sangam, Charsu are still submerged. More than 80% of bat-makers in Jalandhar and Meerut depend on J&K for raw material.

Industry sources said J-K produces

more than 25 lakh ready-to-play and raw (cut piece without handle) willow bats. The industry has a turnover of over Rs. 100 crore and provides livelihood to around 50,000 people.

“Huge amounts of raw wood (cut pieces to make bats) have been swept away by the flood. Even if you cut new pieces, there would be spots in them because of the moisture,” said Rakesh Mahajan, MD, BDM. “Once moisture gets in the wood, there will be a black spot on them and you won’t have the required finish,” he added.

“Not only the willow, the cutting machines are under water too,

and according to information we are getting here, majority of them could be damaged beyond repair.

They will need decent money to install new ones, so naturally, the cost of bats will go up,” said Manish Mahajan, managing director of a Jalandhar-based bat manufacturer.

“Bats made of good quality Kashmir willow start from Rs. 3,000 while English willow bats start from Rs. 5,000. Budding cricketers can’t afford English willow bats, so, the Kashmir willow bats are very popular. Besides, they earn huge export revenue for India,” said Anand.
