July 24, 2015 5 COMMUNITY Rejoicing Devotees Pull the Chariot of the Gods HOUSTON: In what has become an annual event, the Orissa Culture Center, along with the Shri SitaRam Foundation, in collaboration with other local organizations, celebrated the 8th Rath Yatra (Chariot Festival) of Lord Jagannath of Puri Dham this past Saturday, July 18, at the VPSS Haveli. Devotees and curious on-lookers crowded the procession that took the deities from the front entrance of the temple complex, around the corner to the other entrance, marking the symbolic journey of the Gods to their destination. The inspiration comes from the famous Jagannath Rath Yatra festival held each year in Puri, Orissa during the second bright fortnight of the month of Ashad. Hundreds of thousands flock to Puri to get a chance to be part of the procession and pull the chariots that contain the Ratnavedi (jeweled platform) in which Lord Jagannath (considered a form of Lord Vishnu), his brother Balabhadra and their sister Subhadra travel a distance of 2 km from their temple to their aunt’s temple, the Gundicha Temple. They remain there for nine days before returning to their own temple in a procession called the Bahuda Yatra. This tradition has been fostered locally in the Bayou City by the tiny Orissi community here, which has garnered much appreciated support from the Shri SitaRam Foundation which is responsible for one of the largest festivals – Dussehra and Diwali – in the region. Both Gopal Mohapatra of the OCC and Arun Verma of SSRF were ecstatic at the turnout at the day-long event that featured several functions. The morning started with the Havan or fire worship, rooted in ancient Vedic tradition that signifies that divinity is all pervading and is manifested in nature in all its forms. The havan was conducted by the head priest of the Hindu Worship Society, assisted by members of OCC, SSRF and Sri Govinda Ji Gaudiya Matha. Following this, and all day long, the annual free health fair run by cardiologists and family practitioners provided free health check including blood glucose, cholesterol, blood pressure and other laboratory tests. Meanwhile, the deities of Lord Jagannatha, Lord Baladev, Devi Subhdra and the Sudarshana Chakra were presented in their newly decorated and beautified form to shouts of Jai Jagannath in a ritual called Netrotsava or the festival for the eyes of the devotees. A special puja called the Jagannatha Paribara Puja or the worship for the entire Jagannatha Family followed for all assembled devotees seeking the blessings of Lord Jagannath, the Lord of the Universe, concluding at noon with Arati or lighting of lamps. In the afternoon, in the Chapan Bhoga the female members of the OCC offered fifty-

six types of delicious food items to the deities, which they had prepared in accordance with the guidelines followed in the Puri Jagannatha Temple. These were then were distributed as prasadam. The rest of the afternoon was marked by devotional singing of bhajans, chanting of names of the Lords and reciting of the Bhagvat Gita by the Namadwara, Gayatri Paribara, OCC, and Sri Gauddiya Matha organizations. The latter half of the afternoon was focused on a vocal devotional concert presented to a packed hall by internationally renowned artist Pandit Jasraj accompanied by his disciples and local artists. The concert started with a beautiful rendition of the famous Jayadev sloka Jagannatha Swami Nayana Patha Gami, Bhaba Tu Me. This Devotees Pulling the Chariot

was the second visit to Houston in a month by the octogenarian Jasraj, who was accompanied by Suman Ghosh, Tripti Mukherjee and Ratan Mohan Sharma, with Shantilal Shah on table and Jay Gandhi on flute, for a two-hour concert that concluded with a crescendo of chanting of the Lord’s names. As the concert ended, free copies of Nandighosh, a souvenir OCC published yearly by the OCC, which describes different aspects of the philosophy, facts, mythology, historical events, arts and literature surrounding Lord Jaganatha of Puri. The day-long festival narrowed down to the main and most attractive segment with the pahandi ritual in which devotees carry their beloved deities to the beautifully decorated chariot in different steps. After the deities were placed in the chariot, priests of different religious organizations offered prayers to the Lord. Then came the spectacle of the chariot being pulled by hundreds of devotees, showing inclusiveness and the universal brotherhood of Jagannath philosophy where all people, irrespective of caste, creed and belief, are immersed in the devotion of the supreme being we call God. The nama sankirtana and ecstatic dancing of the devotees from ISKON headed up the procession along the route till the final destination in front of the VPSS temple. After the chariot was brought back, all devotees are allowed to offer fruits and sweets to the deities on the chariot and a Maha Arati was performed by priests and a Maha Prasadm dinner was served. The day long festival concluded by 11pm. HOUSTON: The ancient art of Yoga seeks to accomplish one simple goal with respect to the human body: to enhance human life; it therefore stands to reason that if the basic life-bearing mechanisms of the human body can be strengthened, then the quality of life and life itself may be infinitely extended. Indian Student Murdered in Virginia, Suspect Arrested DALLAS: A 27-yearold man is in the Dallas County Jail awaiting extradition to Virginia, where he’s accused of murdering a 23-yearold SMU engineering graduate student from Mumbai earlier this month. The Henry County Sheriff’s Office says Benjamin Tovar should be back in Virginia “fairly soon” Sandesh Dhavan: Sandesh Dhavan, 23, was found murdered to face charges that he stabbed India-born in a Virginia motel room earlier this month
Sandesh Rajendra Dhavan to death in early July in a motel room they were sharing. The two men were spending the summer in Virginia working for GTL Americas Ltd., a telecom company. Two weeks after Dhavan’s body was discovered by law-enforcement officials, there are still more questions than answers. Investigators still don’t have a motive. They still don’t know when the homicide occurred — July 7, when Dhavan’s body was discovered, or, perhaps, a day or two earlier. And they still don’t know why Tovar returned to Dallas following the death of the man with whom he shared the motel room. What is clear is that on July 7, when GTL Americas couldn’t reach the two men and BenTovar: Banjamin Tovar, 27, is awaiting extradition to Virginia from the Dallas County Jail
became concerned about their well-being, they called the manager at the Knights Inn in Collinsville, Va., and asked to check the room. At 11:37 am on July 7, the Henry County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call concerning a body found inside Room 153. Dhavan’s body was taken to the medical examiner’s office in Roanoke, which determined his death was the result of multiple stab wounds. In a release issued July 7, the sheriff’s office said only that Dhavan “was from India and here on a work/study program,” and that they were also “looking for an associate of the victim to check on his well-being, Benjamin Rios Tovar,” who was believed to be driving a rented 2016 Mazda. On July 8 Tovar was arrested in Dallas without incident shortly after he turned in the rental car. Dallas police say he was taken into custody at his residence along the 17700 block of Vail Street in far North Dallas. Lt. D.W. Davis in the Henry County Sheriff’s Criminal Investigations Division says it appears Dhavan and Tovar didn’t know each other in Dallas but met through their employer. He says the two had gone to Virginia to work on assessing the signal of cell-phone towers. SMU says Dhavan was working in Virginia as “part of a co-op internship program.” Davis says authorities aren’t yet sure when the murder took place — “it could have been one or two days previous” to the body’s discovery — and they do not yet have a motive. SMU, meanwhile, extends its condolences to Dhavan’s family. “SMU’s Office of Student Life is reaching out to his fellow students and is offering counseling resources to anyone in the SMU community needing assistance in dealing with this loss,” the university says in a statement released July 21. “A memorial service is being planned for a date after Mr. Dhavan’s friends and faculty have returned to campus for the fall semester.” -The Dallas Morning News

North Carolina Hindu Temple Sign Hit with Over 60 Shotgun Blasts HOUSTON: A sign board for a planned Hindu temple in the US state of North Carolina has been fired at, leaving over 60 holes in the sign, prompting authorities to probe the incident that has shocked the Indian community. The incident happened sometime between noon July 4 and about 1pm last Saturday, Forsyth county sheriff's office said in a report. The sheriff's office is investigating the incident in which someone fired a shotgun at a sign for a planned Hindu temple, leaving more than 60 holes in the sign, it said. A deputy found empty shell casings near the sign that were consistent with bird shot being fired two to three times from a shotgun, Winston-Salem Journal quoted chief
deputy Brad Stanley of the sheriff's office as saying. The sign suffered a damage of $200. Investigators have no leads or suspects, Stanley said. The Om Hindu Organization of North Carolina is planning to build a 3,600 sq ft temple in Clemmons and has bought 7.6 acres at the site. "We as American people are fighting hate, standing up to promote tolerance, respect and inclusion," Om Hindu said in a statement on Friday. "We have no doubts that in long run we will be able to practice our religion and live peacefully in this region and work towards a pluralistic society." The group also said it was moving forward with its plan for the temple. The sheriff's office does not have any information that organization was targeted because of its faith, Stanley said. "It appears just to be vandalism," he said, adding that police have increased its patrols in the area. Manujunath Shamanna, a member of the organization's board of directors, said that his group first noticed the vandalised sign when its members visited the site last Saturday. The organization then reported it to the sheriff's office. "It is very disappointing," Shamanna said of the damaged sign. "It could be some kids playing." About 500 Indian families live in Forsyth county. The vandalism will not affect the organization's plan to build its temple, Shamanna said. Former Clemmons mayor John Bost offered his apologies for the incident in a post on the paper's Facebook page. The Reverend Christopher Burcham, pastor at Union Hill Baptist Church, said he and his wife were disappointed when they noticed the vandalized sign on Thursday. His church is about 275 metres from the site of the planned Hindu temple. The incident comes at the heels of reports of vandalizing of North Texas Hindu Mandir in Dallas in April and vandalizing of two Hindu temples in Seattle metropolitan area of Washington State in February last. President of Universal Society of Hinduism, Rajan Zed has demanded swift action against the culprits and said the incident has shocked the Hindu community in the US. -TimesofIndia

ZEEL is the only media company to feature in this prestigious list. In this list (which is not a ranking), Forbes India has picked companies not just on the basis of size or profits, but also for robustness and consistency. These companies have had the gumption to think differently, disrupt the market and also get their act together even after suffering setbacks with the result that the stock markets have rewarded them handsomely.
Forbes India, with knowledge support from PwC India, adopted a robust, multistage process to select India's Super 50 Companies. At the first stage, a set of eliminators was employed to arrive at a critical mass of strong contenders. Out of all listed companies on the stock exchanges, Forbes India then selected those with a market capitalization of more than Rs. 10,000 crore (as on March 31, 2015). All PSUs were eliminated and only the top two companies from any business group were included. These remaining companies were further evaluated on another set of parameters which included shareholder returns exhibited on the stock exchange over a three-year period, sales growth and return on equity. As a final check, Forbes India considered those companies which were more consistent than others - in the context of the parameters - and used relevant eliminators to remove the outliers, thus arriving at a strong list of companies that comprise the first-ever Super 50 listing. ICCL Senior Citizens Honor High School Graduates
HOUSTON: The Senior Citizens of the Indian Cultural Association of Clear Lake (ICCL) hosted its 19th annual high school graduation luncheon to honor the graduates in the Clear Lake area. Since its inception, there have been over 800 graduates that have been honored through this program. This year there were 53 graduates, and 28 attended. This tradition began under the leadership of the late Sanjiva Rao Allam. He had the idea in 1998
to honor the graduates, and organized an event, which has now become an annual event that the community looks forward to. The organization of this event was later taken over by Radha Golikeri. B.G. Harchandani has now taken over the reins for the last 2 years. In the program this year, introductory remarks were made by President Ashok Tripathy and Radha Golikeri, who welcomed the students and their families, and provided some guiding thoughts.
Dr. Ashok Tripathy spoke to students to keep relationship with parents while in college. Radha Golikeri also spoke about the history of this event and she gave students Golden advise “Hard Work”citing an example which is true even 70 years ago, when World War ll_ended,three senior corrspondents from New York Times were sent to interview British Prime Minister Winston Churchil, US general Eisenhower and Eleanor Roosevelt who was
pioneer drafting the” Declaration Human Rights”_All three were intervied independently about same time,” what single factor do you attribute your successful life”. Coincidently,but strangly,all three of them gave an identical answer of just two words HARD WORK. Some of the graduating seniors then got involved with Harshini Ganesh singing the US National Anthem and Perry Alagappan singing the Indian National Anthem. Both did a fantastic job. Perry Alagappan, a salutatorian from Clear Lake High School, was also the student speaker. He gave a motivational speech . The keynote speaker, Balaram Muddapu, was introduced by Radha Golikeri as being intelligent, accomplished and having a terrific green thumb. Dr. Balaram is a former university department head for Mathematics and Computer Science, and currently runs the Quantum Energy Healing practice in Friendswood, Texas. He was heavily engaged in student centered partnerships between academia and industry and encouraged the students to connect with their professors, with industry and government leaders, and with each other to make themselves known. speech was to Connect and Thrive. He identified various opportunities and pathways for students to get more involved at college, to further both their growth and their future careers, through research, grants, internships, government programs like NSF’s STEM program. etc. The value of these partnerships for all those involved is that it helps create good workplace behaviors as students prepare for their future careers vs. having to learn them once they start their careers. He also reiterated several times the value that each student has and the impact they can make in this world by work grounded in love and good energy. The event concluded with each graduate receiving a small gift from the senior citizens. These gifts were distributed by Mohini Harchandani and Syamala Muddapu. A vote of thanks was given by the organizer, B.G. Harchandani. Harchandani thanked the donors, Mogul restaurant, the Sanjiva Rao family, and the ICCL community. Flowers were presented to Dr. Balaram and his wife Syamala. Finally a delicious lunch was attended by 111 community members at Mogul Indian Restaurant on Bay Area Boulevard.

The story thus far….Gandhi permitted a lower caste family to reside at the ashram that he established at Ahmedabad. He met with much opposition. He also amazed and angered the British officers, upper-class Indians, and friends gathered at a foundation stone laying ceremony at Banaras University by speaking out against usage of the English language on the university premises that he deemed “sacred”. The annual meeting of the Congress was held in December 1916 in Lucknow. The Congress was divided as there were the moderates and there were the extremists, but at Lucknow the Congress met without tension between the two wings. The President, Ambika Charan Mazumdar, spoke in terms of Swaraj, which previous leaders had demanded. A resolution was passed appealing to His Majesty’s Government and demanding that a definite step should be taken towards Indian self-government by granting the reforms contained in a referendum prepared by the AllIndia Congress Committee and adopted by the All-India Muslim League. In Lucknow the Congress and the Muslim League came to an agreement. This was later known as the Lucknow Pact. For the sake of the unity of India the Congress conceded many points demanded by the Muslims. For two years Gandhi had traveled extensively in India and had talked at different places. He now wanted to start some work connected with labor. His interest first centered on the problem of indentured labor, the system under which poor, ignorant laborers were enticed away from India to work in the British colonies. He disapproved of this system in South Africa, fought it there, and he wanted to see it abolished. The Viceroy, Lord Hardinge, announced that His Majesty’s Government had agreed to abolish the system in due course. Gandhi, however, wanted a definite date before which the system would go. Gandhi started a great agitation on this issue. He went to Bombay and consulted all the Indian leaders there. They fixed May 31, 1917 as the last date for the abolition of indentured labor. He then went around the country to get support for this view. Meetings were held in important places. Everywhere there

Even Gandhi admitted that he had not expected so much public support. As a result of the agitation, the Government announced that the system of indentured labor would be stopped before July 31,1917. Then Gandhi had heard about an obnoxious system of agricultural labor prevailing in the Champaran district of Bihar, where the cultivators were forced by Europeans to grow indigo, a blue dye. This imposed on them great discomfort. They could not grow the food they needed, nor did they receive adequate payment for the indigo. Gandhi was told of this by an agriculturist from Bihar, Rajkumar Shukla. He requested Gandhi to go to the place and see the state of affairs there. Gandhi was then attending the Congress meeting at Lucknow and he did not have time to go there. Rajkumar Shukla followed him about, begging him to come and help the hapless villagers in Champaran. Gandhi at last promised to visit the place after he had visited Calcutta. Gandhi went to Champaran with Rajkumar in early 1917. On his arrival the District Magistrate served him with a notice saying that he was not to remain in the district of Champaran but must leave the place by the first available train. Gandhi disobeyed the order. He was summoned to appear before the court. The magistrate said that if Gandhi left immediately the charges would be dropped. “This cannot be,” said Gandhi. “I came here to render humanitarian and national service. I shall make Champaran my home and work for the suffering people,” added Gandhi. A large crowd of peasants gathered outside the court shouting slogans. The magistrate and the police looked nervous. Then Gandhi said, “I shall help you and calm these people if you let me speak to them.” Gandhi appeared before the crowd and said, “You must show your faith
in me and in my work by remaining quiet. The magistrate had the right to arrest me, because I disobeyed his order. If I am sent to jail, you must accept that as just. We must work peacefully. Any violent act will harm our cause.” The crowd dispersed peacefully. The police stared at Gandhi in admiration as he went inside the court. Gandhi wrote about the incident later.“That day in Champaran was an unforgettable event in my life ..... It is no exaggeration, but the literal truth, to say that in this meeting with the peasants, I was face to face with God, ahimsa and truth.” The Government withdrew the case against Gandhi and allowed him to remain in the district. Gandhi stayed and studied the grievances of the peasants. He visited many villages. He cross-examined about 8,000 cultivators and recorded their statements. In this way he arrived at an exact understanding of their plight and the causes. He came to the conclusion that the ignorance of the cultivators was one of the main reasons why the European planters could exploit them. Gandhi set up voluntary organizations to improve the economic and educational conditions of the people. They opened schools and taught the people how to improve sanitation. The Government recognized Gandhi’s strength and devotion to just causes. They themselves then set up a committee to enquire into the grievances of the cultivators. They invited Gandhi to serve on that committee, and he agreed. The result was that within a few months the Champaran Agrarian Bill was passed. It gave great relief to the cultivators and land tenants. Gandhi could not stay longer in Bihar. There were calls from other places. Labor unrest was brewingin Ahmedabad and Gandhi was requested to help settle the dispute. Gandhi hurried back to Ahmedabad. Before taking up the labor dispute Gandhi wanted to move his ashram. The Satyagraha Ashram was in a village near Ahmedabad, but the surrounding was not clean and plague had broken out. It had spread there from Ahmedabad. A rich merchant of Ahmedabad, wanted to buy alternative land for the ashram. Gandhi went about with him looking for land and they chose a place on the bank of the Sabarmati river, near the Sabarmati Central Jail. The land was purchased and the famous Sabarmati Ashram was established. In Ahmedabad there were many textile mills. Prices had gone up and the mill workers were demanding higher wages. The mill owners would not agree. Gandhi sympathized with the workers and took up their cause. He launched a struggle and resorted to peaceful resistance. The workers proudly followed Gandhi and pledged their full support to him. They paraded the streets with large banners, and said they would not go back to work until a settlement had been reached. By most measures, India is set to become the world’s fastest growing major economy this year, outpacing China. Yet, India remains not an easy place to do business in. Infosys co-founder NR Narayana Murthy’s comments about how companies end up losing money in government projects need to be seen in this context. In many ways his remarks mirror India’s poor ranking of 142 in the World Bank’s Ease of Doing Business report. Getting a power connection for a new business takes 105 days, more than three times the Singapore average of 31 days. It takes 47 days to register a property in India compared to 4.5 days in Singapore. It’s not just about private business. It is about government projects as well. Mr Narayana Murthy’s observation that unless the government comes up with an attractive and competitive set of clauses, large companies may not be keen on working with it, should serve as a reminder that GDP growth rates could be masking a few rough edges that need ironing out. While adverse policy pronouncements can spark fears among global investors, domestic entrepreneurs also have a similar tale to tell on India’s business environment. The infrastructure sector is a case in point. The slow pace of implementation is partly attributable to the relatively muted response from private developers and looming questions over the effectiveness of the much-touted public private partnership model over the last few years. Government projects need to have clauses on a par with international best practices to attract Indian players. Initiatives such as ‘Make in India’ and ‘Digital India’ are as much an invitation to domestic and foreign companies as a promise to rectify everything that has kept the country at almost the bottom of the ‘ease of doing business’ index. From energy shortages and land problems to ambiguous tax laws and byzantine labour rules, a barrage of hurdles have kept away large-scale private investments in what should otherwise count as a massive, attractive market. Lack of cooperation between the Centre and states also turns off investors. These issues remain central to the ambition to turn India into a manufacturing powerhouse and make the country more investor-friendly. Hindustan Times

Our Expectations for Our Children BY PYARELAL RAGHAVAN An HSBC study on the hopes and expectation of parents on their children’s education brings out very some interesting insights on how different cultures value learning. The study which covers more than a dozen countries including India shows that though parent’s aspirations differ not only across both developing and developed counties and also within them there are some still areas where their preference overlap substantially. According to the study the most important goal that Indian parents have for their children is that they build successful careers in their adult life. This is the ultimate goal for 51% of the Indian parents surveyed. Only Mexican parents are ahead of India in rating a successful career of the children as the ultimate goal with 52% vouching for it. Asked to ranked three most important goals that they wanted their child to achieve as an adult 51% of the Indian parents choose successful careers, while 49% choose happiness in life, 33% identified a healthy life style, 22% wanted them to earn enough for a comfortable life and 17% rated fulfilling their children’s potential as the ultimate goal. However, parents in most developed countries did not give much weightage to successful careers. Only one fifth of the parents in the United States regards successful careers as an ultimate goal. The share of parents supporting such a goal is even lower in United Kingdom and Australia (17% each). Asian nations like China, Taiwan and Hong Kong also don’t rate successful careers as too important with the share of parents supporting it as an ultimate goal being 15%, 17% and 19% respectively. What is even more interesting is the
substantial differences of opinion between Indian and other parents on the goals they have set for their children. Being happy in life was the ultimate goal of parents in more than a dozen countries ranging from 56% in Indonesia, 58% in Hong Kong, 60% in UAE to 77% in UK, 78% in Canada and 86% in France. However, only 49% of the Indian parents rated happiness in life as one of the three most important goals. Indian parents aspiration also differ substantially from that of other nations in terms of choice of subjects, university education, post graduate qualifications and additional tutoring. What is rather strange is that while Indian parents have the highest preference for engineering as the preferred subject of their wards despite the nation’s frail industrial sector Chinese parents have the least preference for the subject even as their nation is dubbed as the manufacturing hub of the world. When it comes to choice of subjects the largest number of Indian parents wanted their children to study engineering (23%) which was followed by business management and finance (22%), computer and information sciences (16%), medicine (14%) and law (2%). The academic choices Indian parents have for their children varies substantially from that of Chinese parents whose top choice for their children is business management and finance (25%), followed by medicine (15%), computer and information science (7%), law (7%) and

engineering (6%). However, Indian parents emerge almost at the top when it comes to the higher education qualifications they aspire for their children. In fact the survey shows that 91% of the Indian parents wanted their children to have at least an undergraduate degree or more 88% wanted them to secure a masters or even higher degree. In contrast only 60% of the parents in the United States wanted their children to get an undergraduate degree or more while only 31% targeted a masters or higher degree. One thing common to most of the Asian nations was their steady faith in additional tutoring. While China has the largest share of parents paying for additional tutoring (74%), it was followed by Indonesia (71%), India (71%), Malaysia (63%), Singapore (59%) and Taiwan (59%). In contrast additional tutoring was very marginal in advanced countries like France (20%), Australia (21%), UK (23%) and the USA (26%). And Asian countries also believed that university education provided good value for money. The parents who had the highest regards for university education were in Singapore (84%), Malaysia (78%) and India (78%). However, more than half the parents in Brazil, Turkey, Mexico and Taiwan thought that university education offered only a poor value for money. Similarly the preference for international university education is valued very high in most Asian economies. While 69% of the Chinese parent would pay at least 25% more for an international education 59% of the Indian parents too would opt for such a choice. Nations which give preference would international education include Hong Kong (62.5%), Taiwan (59%), Indonesia (52%) and Singapore (50%). This shows that Indian arents have set the bar a bit too high for the children to easily match. ToI

Ghar di Dahin (Homemade Yogurt) The very heart and soul of India is the spirituality that it offers to the people in the country and naturally it is tied into the main religion, Hinduism. One of the chief tenets of Hinduism is the relationship to cows and cow milk, both of which are intertwined with the story of the young Krishna. And in that tale is the episode of the playful Divine baby smilingly scooping up and eating yogurt! Yogurt or dahin has been a part of Hindustan’s past for centuries and is used in many ways. Dahin is considered one of the panchamitras (the others being honey, sugar, milk and ghee) used in Hindu worship and puja. The aspect of being cleansed by dahi is considered an ablution that washes away many sins. Dahin is also used in cosmetics when mixed with turmeric and honey, as a hair conditioner; by itself with spices as a marinade for meats and dahin and honey is a prized mixture. Full fat dahi has 12% calcium and is high in protein, sugar and carbohydrates. Yogurt by itself has live cultures that can prevent antibioticassociated diarrhea. In India, ready-made yogurt is now available in plastic pouches from many mini-markets, but the really delicious variety, with the crust on top is still only available from bazaar halwais (confectioners) who scoop off a glacier-like wedge and serve it in a leaf-bowl or your own dish brought from home. These days when there is so much talk about the taste and creaminess of Greek yogurt, it is curious why more people aren’t drawn to the taste of Indian yogurt and the way to make it at home. But once you learn how to make yogurt at home, you’ll always prefer it to the others!! Ingredients : 4 cups saada doodh (whole milk) or low fat, if desired 3 tbsp dahinn (plain yogurt) for the starter

Directions: 1. Pour two tablespoons of water in a pot to coat it, preferably one with a heavy base, then pour the milk in. 2. Place it over low heat and let the milk slowly come to a boil. As it does,
a soft skin will form over the top and it will start to puff up and rise. Take it off and let it cool down. 3. Take the 2 tbsp of yogurt out of the fridge and let it sit outside to warm up. Don’t use it cold as the fermentation will not take hold easily. 4. Once the milk is lukewarm to the touch, pour in the starter and mix it in thoroughly. 5. Now cover the pot, wrap it with some thick towels and place it in a warm place like inside the oven. 6. It is best to start this overnight. If you start in the daytime, then let the pot sit undisturbed for at least 12 hours.
7.Take off the towels and check the dahin: it should be well-formed, curdled and ready to serve. You can keep a small amount as a starter for the next batch of yogurt. Shakuntla Malhotra is a skilled cook of Punjabi dishes made in the old-fashioned style that she learnt as a young woman in her ancestral home in Lyallpur, India before it became part of Pakistan after the Partition in 1947. People have often admired her cooking for its simplicity and taste that comes with each mouthful. Even in her mid-eighties, she continues to cook daily and agreed to share some of her delectable Punjabi recipes.
MAMA’S TIP OF THE WEEK BOILING MILK FOR YOGURT AND CREAMS
Many people will let milk boil over high heat and then get busy with other things. Before you know it, the milk has started to boil and soon it will give off a burnt smell. Even though it is a liquid, the ingredients in milk thicken quickly, especially the parts nearest the heat. The burnt smell runs through the rest of the milk and you usually have to throw it away. And cleaning the pot later is a difficult chore! When boiling milk, first pour in two spoonfuls of water before adding the milk. This will keep the milk from sticking to the bottom and burning. It is best to keep the heat very low and occasionally stirring it while it is starting to get hot in order to move the portion that is closest to the heat. When a thin skin forms over the top and starts to puff up, you can be sure that the milk is ready to boil. Let the skin rise up, then turn the heat off. To reduce the volume, stir the milk often.

Movie Review: Bajrangi Bhaijaan BY ROHIT VATS
NEW DELHI: Never mind which side of the divide you decide to stand, here’s one fact of life you ignore at your own peril: Never judge a Salman Khan fan when he’s rooting for the Bhai pulling off the most logic-defying stunts, and even scenes. Because, Kabir Khan’s Bajrangi Bhaijaan is one film that will bring them to the theatres in droves and you’d do yourself a favour by keeping quiet even if you think this film is over the top. But then, chances are that you may also love it. First things first. There is no doubting Salman’s secular credentials. He is one actor who never tires of talking about the multi-religious ethnicity of his family and he has reasons to do so. But now he has decided to extend this ideology to the themes of his films as well. In a way, it started with Jai Ho where Salman’s crusader ‘aam aadmi’ image was built. Kick consolidated this image, and now Bajrangi Bhaijaan completes the picture. This film presents the bhai as the quintessential ‘aam aadmi’ who is forever ready to embrace religious pluralism if that is the last resort. And guess what, Salman does it in a style no one else can. Pawan Kumar Chautrvedi (Salman) enjoys the burden of carrying the legacy of his RSS member father
in Pratapgarh, UP. This is not exactly a load as Pawan grows up to be an extremely religious guy who likes to bow down to every monkey he meets. Turns out, he is least interested in studies and wrestling, two streams his father wants him to excel in. Pawan’s life is turned upside down when his father sends him away to Delhi for, what else, a job. Like it happens in every Hindi film, once in the city, he meets Rasika (Kareena) and her tough-nut father Digambar (Sharat Saxena), a devout Brahmin. Pawan, alias Bajrangi, stays true to his religion in the big city, never miss-
ing a chance to attend anything that has Lord Hanuman’s name next to it. His pursuits lead him to Kurukshetra where he finds an abandoned child after dancing his shoes off to Selfie le le re. Soon, we are told that this child cannot talk, is from Pakistan, and that she is stranded here in India.Not surprisingly, Pawan takes it upon himself to reunite the child with her parents. Just that he has a set of problems that threaten to throw his mission off balance right from the word go: he has no passport, he never lies, and he is a vegetarian. And I was very happy with the way Nawazuddin Siddiqui portrayed me in Bajrangi Bhaijaan,” Nawab told Hindustan Times on phone from Karachi on Monday.“Do you know that all shows of the film have been booked in advance till July 27? It was this same video that inspired the character of Chand Nawab, the Pakistani journalist who helps Salman Khan in Bajrangi Bhaijaan. “I want to thank (director) Kabir Khan, Salman Khan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui for the way they portrayed me and Pakistan in the film. Nawazuddin has done a good role,” said Nawab, a reporter with Karachibased Indus News. “I was on a TV show with Kabir Khan and he suggested I should come to Mumbai and work in films,” he added with a laugh.Nawab said he had been receiving calls from friends and colleagues even at 3am to discuss the character in the film. “Others have been coming to my home with cakes and sweets. My colleagues and bosses have expressed their appreciation,” he said. They responded to recruiters who promised them good jobs in the US, eventually leading to green cards for them and their families. So they hocked family jewels and property to pony up anywhere between Rs 5 lakh and Rs 10 lakh per individual to recruiters and lawyers in pursuit of the American dream. When they arrived at the Signal shipyards in Pascagoula, Mississippi, in 2006, they discovered that not only
their H-2B guest worker visas were meant for temporary non-agricultural workers and would not lead to a green card, but they were also going to be working in slave conditions. Signal International, a Gulf Coast marine services company that was repairing oil rigs in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, was packing them 24 to a trailer in labour camps, and extracting $1,050 per month from each of some 200 Indian workers. When the workers compl8ained about the conditions and of being conned, they were illegally detained, even after they began reaching out to human rights advocates. There were

threats of lawsuits and deportation, testing the fears of men who had already given up everything in India to come to US. The situation was so dire that one worker attempted suicide. None of the company's non-Indian workers were required to live in the company housing. Rights activists who saw the conditions documented staggering exploitation in a report titled "Close to Slavery." On Wednesday, the nine-year ordeal of the workers drew to a close after the workers accepted a $20 million deal to settle their lawsuits after Signal had already been found liable by a federal jury in February this year for defrauding and exploiting them. The lawsuits were coordinated by the ac8claimed civil rights group The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), which intervened in 2008 at the request of the workers. "We are happy to have reached an agreement and hope to see it quickly approved by the court," said Jim Knoepp, SPLC deputy legal director. "This agreement and apology from the company will allow the workers to finally move on with their lives. It also serves as a warning to companies that might exploit guest workers." In February, a federal jury in New Orleans awarded $14 million in damages to five Indian guest workers represented by the SPLC, finding that the company and its agents engaged in labour trafficking, fraud, racketeering and discrimination. The jury also found that one of the plaintiffs was a victim of false imprisonment and retaliation.The case was the first of the dozen lawsuits against Signal to go to trial. Together, the suits are said to comprise one of the largest labour trafficking cases in US history. Another case was set to go to trial this month. The whole issue was watched closely by rights' groups because it involved foreign guest workers of limited means who are often exploited because they have little resources and recourse to justice. "This agreement will ensure some compensation for these workers who only sought a better life when they took these jobs," said Alan Howard, SPLC board chairman. "They persevered and won justice. This agreement sends a powerful message that guest workers have rights and cannot be exploited." -Times of India

India to Build a Strategic Uranium Reserve BY PRASHANT S.V. RANGNEKAR NEW DELHI: After a record production this year, India is working on creating a ‘strategic uranium reserve’ to ensure its atomic power reactors do not face shortage of the crucial nuclear fuel. “The reserve pool could be anywhere between 5000 MT to 15,000 MT which can last for 5-10 years,” said a senior government official. A proposal for stocking 5000 MT of uranium has been sent to the Cabinet for approval but the cap is likely to increase in the coming years. Over the past one year, India has been pursuing its case to buy uranium from different countries including Australia and Canada. It is also procuring uranium from Russia for its indigenous reactors. During Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Kazakhstan last week, India renewed a
contract with the Central Asian country to procure 5000 MT of uranium. After Hyderabad another Nuclear Fuel Complex is coming up in Kota in Rajasthan, sources said. “For all these years, we could not think of having a reserve like other countries have due to the impending sanctions. But now we can think of working to build a reserve of nuclear fuel. “We are mostly depending on the uranium from Australia. Once we start getting it, we can start building the reserve. Uranium from Kazakhstan will largely meet the current demand. It is a rare commodity, so one should keep piling it whenever it is available at a cheaper rate in the international market,” the official added. Under the Indo-US nuclear deal, the latter is to support India’s initiative for having a nuclear pool. “The United States will support an Indian

Indian reactors had been “under-performing” as they did not get enough fuel from the outside world prior to the historic Indo-US nuclear cooperation agreement due to sanctions.
However, since its inception, India has started importing uranium from Russia, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and France. In a major milestone, India this year registered a record production of over 1,252 MT of uranium, manufacturing close to double the annual fuel requirement of atomic reactors in the country. The production has far exceeded the country’s annual
fuel requirement of 650 MT for the Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs), which means the country has surplus nuclear fuel that will last several months. Every 700 MW of reactor needs 125 MT of uranium every year. However, with the rising number of power reactors in the country, the demand is expected to rise. In the near future, two nuclear reactors of 700 MW each in Rajasthan Atomic Power Station and Kakrapar Atomic Power Station are coming up. Four atomic reactors of 700 MW each are also coming up at the Gorakhpur Haryana Anu Vidyut Pariyojana. Fuel for Kudankulam plant in Tamil Nadu and Jaitapur in Maharashtra, coming up in collaboration with Russia and France respectively, will be made available by the foreign players. -Livemint.com
Private Equity Funds Join Hands for Big-Ticket Deals in India By Pooja Sarkar
MUMBAI: Bulge bracket private equity funds, who have typically invested alone in India, are now partnering with their peers to make big-ticket investments and acquire management control in investee companies. In April, global PE fund Advent International Corp. and Singaporebased investment firm Temasek International Pte Ltd agreed to buy a 34.37% stake in Crompton Greaves Consumer Electricals Ltd. This was the first time they had joined hands in India to acquire majority control in a firm, in a deal valued at around Rs.2,000 crore.
While Temasek has partnered with other funds globally to acquire majority control in a firm, in India, this was a first for the fund. “In this particular case, both Advent and us have been looking at the transaction independently for a long period of time and both have been engaged in talks with the management and ultimately, we decided to do it together.And it was large enough for us to do it together...” said Rohit Sipahimalani, co-head (investment group, portfolio and strategy group) and head (India) at Temasek, while explaining the deal. Sipahimalani thinks one reason why PE funds are coming together is that the size of transactions in India is getting larger. Temasek is open to
more such deals “...if we find a transaction of a buyout nature”, he said. In another instance, India Value Fund Advisors and global PE fund TAAssociates agreed to jointly invest $500 million in Bengaluru-based broadband and communications services provider Atrium Convergence Technologies (ACT). Dhiraj Poddar, co-head India at TA Associates Advisory Pvt. Ltd said the co-investment model works better in larger deals, which may often involve a controlling stake. In such cases, there is enough for the PE funds to share, he said. “If the funds are complementary, it obviously helps the business and you are working with like-minded partners. And if there is an alignment
in terms of investment horizon and working style, then it is helpful. Like any partnership, the alignment part is important,” said Poddar. Other such deals are in the works as well. Global PE funds Warburg Pincus and General Atlantic are in talks to acquire the retail brokerage firm Sharekhan Ltd in a deal that is pegged at nearly Rs.2,400 crore, according to two people familiar with the development. Sandeep Naik, managing director at General Atlantic, in an emailed response declined to comment for the story. An email sent to Warburg Pincus on Thursday went unanswered. NEW DELHI: Following Sania Mirza’s Wimbledon doubles conquest with partner Martina Hingis last week, the sports ministry has plans to recommend the 28-yearold tennis star for the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, the country’s highest sporting honour. Sania, who rose to the world No. 1 doubles rank in April this year, has not personally applied for the award, sources told TOI. “Sania has not applied for the Khel Ratna but as per rules, if the ministry feels so, it can recommend deserving athletes for the
award. The sports ministry is considering nominating Sania given her performance this year,” sources said on Friday. Sania, who was conferred with the Arjuna Award in 2004 and Padma Shri in 2006, had won a gold in mixed doubles with Saketh Myneni and a bronze in women’s doubles with Prarthana Thombare at the Incheon Asian Games. IPS Officers with Medical, Engineering Degrees are Changing the Face of Policing By Deeptiman Tiwary
NEW DELHI: There is a new 'Kaptan Saheb' in the districts. He is invariably from one of the IITs or top-notch medical and MBA schools. He solves age-old policing problems with heavy use of technology or launches innovative initiatives to prioritize ignored sectors using the lessons he learnt in his college. Meet the new crop of IPS officers who, in a globalized India, have ignored prospects of money-spinning careers and opted for the rigours of police service. Thanks to poor size of IPS batches (as low as 15 officers) between 1999 and 2003, the police service today has more than 40% of its total strength made up of officers with less than 10 years of experience. Most of these young officers come from engineering, medical or MBA backgrounds. In fact, in the batches that passed out in 2011, 2012 and 2013, 70% of officers are either engineers, doctors or MBA. It is these officers who are turning out to be the force behind the Modi government's concept of smart policing. Several of their policing initiatives - implemented in their respective districts with great results - have been picked up by the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPRD) for inclusion in the smart
policing programme. Some of these initiatives include specially designed software to quickly trace stolen vehicles and find owners of impounded ones in Karnataka, digitally connecting all police stations in a district for faster sharing of information on criminals in Gujarat, e-beat books that maintain database of all influential and opinion-making people in an area for quick dissemination of information during communal unrest in Delhi, a comprehensive drive to trace missing children in Ghaziabad and a unique engagement with Kashmiri youth through cricket that has brought incidents of stone-pelting in Pulwama to zero this year. In September 2014, DCP with Bangalore police Abhishek Goyal, a 2005 batch officer and an IIT-Delhi alumnus, played a key role in launch of a social media initiative to bring about seamless communication between police and public. The city police and various officers launched their Twitter handles to communicate with the public. In less than a year's time, the total following of Bangalore police's Twitter accounts is more than 3.50 lakh. Its Facebook page has over 6 lakh followers. Social media is used to take feedback from people and channelize police resources accordingly, be it for traffic management or crime prevention. A research on how the system
made police accountable has already won two Delhi researchers an award in the US. Goyal, who arrested suspected ISIS follower Mehdi Masrur Biswas, also launched a social media monitoring cell - using a software created to scan all social media platforms with key words related to terrorism. Goyal's colleague in Mandya (Karnataka), Bhushan Borase, a 2009 batch IPS officer with an engineering degree from Pune University and MTech from NIT Jamshedpur, is not far behind. A vehicle database management project launched by Borase one-and-a-half years ago has helped restored 786 stolen and impounded vehicles rotting in various police sta-
tions to its rightful owners. Borase got a special software designed for this from the local engineering college. This has already bagged an award for the best e-governance initiative. "There are vehicles stolen from the jurisdiction of one police station lying in another in the same district for years. It's because one police station does not know what the other is doing. After we brought this system, we were able to track a truck to its rightful owner after 15 years of its impounding," said Borase. Ghaziabad (UP) SP Dharmendra Yadav's comprehensive programme to track missing children and restore them to their parents - called Operation Smile - has won a pat on the

A 2006 batch IPS officer, Yadav spent considerable energy in mapping missing children trends, training and sensitizing his constabulary and connecting various police stations for quick dissemination of information and traced 800 missing children in a matter of months. Further north, a national-level sportsman-turned-IPS officer is changing the face of his district through cricket. A 2008 batch IPS officer, Tejinder Singh is SP of Pulwama, a volatile district in south Kashmir both in terms of militancy and law and order. Singh came to the district in December 2013. Once a national level athlete, Singh saw sports as the right medium to channelize the restive energy of Valley youth. Organizing various junior and senior-level tournaments, Singh not only forged a relationship between police and local youth but also built a database of youngsters which he taps into for help whenever there is unrest in the district. The initiative has helped Singh bring down law and order incidents in his district from 18 in 2014 to zero in 2015. -TimesofIndia
Maharashtra Sees 1,300 Suicides by Farmers in Only 6 Months this Year MUMBAI: As the farm crisis rocks the state assembly, there is no escaping the fact that the despair in Maharashtra's countryside is only deepening. The farmer suicide count in the six-month span from January to June this year stood at 1,300 cases, the state's revenue department figures show. So in just six months this year, the farmer suicide toll has already touched 66% of the 1,981 cases recorded in the entire year of 2014. The figure has also crossed the 1,296 cases recorded in the state during the
12-month span of 2013. The data suggests that the toll for 2015 is likely to cross the number of cases recorded in 2014. Critics say the revenue department figures are an underestimation. Data on farmer suicides in the state from the National Crime Records Bureau has always been much higher. The bureau has also consistently reported that Maharashtra has the highest number of farmer suicides in the country. Significantly, only 55% of the suicides recorded by the revenue

department so far have been declared eligible for compensation. To be considered an "eligible suicide", the land has to be in the victim's name and there should be evidence of indebtedness. The government claims only these cases are linked to agrarian distress. As the opposition pushes for a loan waiver for the state's farmers, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis is expected to make a statement in the assembly on Monday. Significantly, the cotton belt of Vidarbha—from where chief minister

This accounts for slightly more than half the number of farmer suicides so far. The arid region of Marathwada recorded 438 cases till June, accounting for 34% of the total cases. The north Maharashtra belt has recorded 158 cases. The sugar bowl of western Maharashtra accounted for 32 cases while the Konkan region has reported only one case so far this year.
