 Why did you start making music? I started making music because I needed to create something positive during a very negative time in my life. Music gave me a way to turn my trials into something real and new. That’s the beautiful thing about music; it can give someone with no hope or way out, an opportunity to be more. What is the inspiration for your music? My music is inspired by life and living life to the fullest on a daily basis. I could’ve died during my heart surgery. So that whole experience gave me a whole new outlook on life. I mean I could have easily died playing football but God wanted me here and I believe that’s for a reason. Therefore, my music is centered on overcoming the negatives in life and becoming something great. My music is a celebration of life and new beginnings. Do you have an idol? If so, who is your idol and why? My music icon is 2pac. I believe that his music had this unexplainable impact on so many people all around the world. 2pac created music that had meaning and purpose and as an artist he stood for something. His fans believed in what he stood for because he spoke on the hardships of life but understood there was a need for change. What is your dream? My dream is to impact music to the point where people remember me as one of the greatest artist of all time. Music is universal in the sense that you can impact the world through music and what you stand for. I want the world to say Jay King’s music sparked a change on the outlook of life. I want to be more than the money and diamonds. I want to make history. I want to live forever through music Where do you see yourself in 10 years? In 10 years I see myself winning multiple grammy awards. I see my music worldwide with a fan base that expects great music. I want to make an impact similar to Michael Jackson but through rap. So many people view rap as a negative genre of music when the truth is people love rap worldwide because our music stands for something. I want to be an icon in music 15

Who is the biggest influence in your life? The biggest influence in my life is my son J’Chaii. He was born around the time I lost everything and his birth influenced me to strive to be more, for him. I made a decision to not return to a life of crime but to use my downfall to become something greater. I want my son to look back and my life and say my father never quit, never gave up. I want him to know that the sky is the limit if you believe in yourself and the truth that we are all here for a purpose. What is a normal day in your life? A normal day in my life starts with a 10-hour work shift and music after that until I go to sleep. I know most rappers are known for starting and funding their music career through selling drugs. But I want to prove to kids that have a dream of making music that you don’t have to have that foundation to make it. I want to prove that if you work hard and invest everything into something you believe in then you will make it, showing them that there is another level of success that has more security and longevity.

@DaRealJayKing

www.jaykingismusic.com When did music become more than just a hobby? Music became more than a hobby for me back in 2009 when I lost my college football career. Everything I worked for, all my hopes and dreams were gone. I moved back to Florida closer to my family and I was broke with no money and no direction. So I made a choice to try something more positive in music than turn back to the streets. I wanted to be something more, my son deserved to have a father that wouldn’t quit What is something you want to do in your life that has nothing to do with music? I want to be a great man. By that I mean I want to be a great father, a great provider, a man overall. My father wasn’t in my life much and as African Americans we are stereotyped as bad fathers. It’s up to us to give our kids a stronger foundation and change that stereotype. What is something you enjoy doing in your spare time besides music? Honestly I don’t enjoy doing anything besides making music.

 I know it’s been a minute but here I am. @lyaness1st asked me to write about the double standards for cheating. So that will be the topic of today. I honestly feel like it’s a good topic to talk about. Why is it when a man cheats, its okay and we are suppose to forgive without any issues? But if we cheat on them, they turn into straight sensitive mutha f*^&%#s. I can write about this because once upon a time I was married and that sucker cheated and had the attitude like s*%# happens and deal with it, and then I have a lot of male friends that cheat on their shorty and they act the same way. Men have the game twisted up. Things happen on both end of the playing field. Now men have big ass egos. They feel like cheating is a part of life and every now and then its okay to sample different chick. So we already know men are dumb as hell and cant cheat without getting caught. They will leave behind all kinds of clues and their body language when they get a call or text messages is a dead giveaway. and then females are spiteful as hell especially when they get mad. So he cheats and he gets away with it. Instead of cheating just once and bust one or two nuts in the session, they wanna keep creeping back. Now shorty is feeling comfortable because they had sex a few time and if it’s a dumb chick then she feeling like it’s a relationship. Ya’ll know the kind of female I'm talking about. Now things gets complicated and he is about to get busted. So the truth comes out and he like I f’ed up and it didn’t mean anything to him. Then you ask him the million dollar question. If your ass wouldn’t have gotten caught, would you have told me? That's when you get to see how dumb he truly is, because he holds his down and say no. Now women are strong creatures by nature, most of us anyway. So in the back of our mind, this dude is about to pay for being stupid. We don’t ask him if the sex was good because we don’t give a rats tail. We might make your ass sleep on the couch or let you still sleep in the bed but no sex. So he goes in to breaking bread and doing whatever he has to do to make things right and get your trust again. What men don’t understand is women expect them to be a man, whether they do the right or the wrong thing, just man da F up when you get caught. Remember 2 can play that game.

Summer Issue #1

Now when a female cheats, the man finds out because we want you to know. We are better and smarter cheaters then man. We learned their trifling ass ways and took it to the next level. We will sleep with our lover, wash and douche in the shower and come home and have sex the hell out of you. We wont mess up home unless it absolutely necessary. So now we are tired and we decide to tell the truth. Now we all have a been with a man that has cheated on us at least once. If you're over there say no, you lying your ass off and you need to stop.. Now this is where it gets interesting. I’ll use one of my own personal experiences. My ex cheated and he expected me to get over it and in time I did. I didn’t care what the chick looked like nor did I want to know any details. I just sucked it up and made the situation work. Now don’t get it twisted because I was choc mami when this happen. cheating isn’t an option. Now I happened to meet this dude and I made sure he looked better than what I had at home. I was told that if you cheat, make sure everything has to be better than what's at home. So I had that under control. So me and old dude started sexing and I cheated for several months. My man never had a clue. But things started getting crazy with my lover. His sex game was proper but at the end of the day it was wrong and I felt my point had been made and I started to feel guilty. So I came clean. Now when his dirty laundry came out he had the attitude like okay and now he is on the receiving end of the betrayal. He wants to see a picture to see what the guy looks like. Then here comes the questions like was his thing bigger than mine? Did he sex you better than me? Did he eat you out? Please tell me you didn’t suck his thing. Then my ex wants to have sex because his ego was bruised and he wants to prove a point. All I can do is shake my head. Men expect you to put up with their dirt and keep it moving. Or they expect you to chalk it up as that's just what men do. Boy bye! If you don’t want your feelings hurt then stop thinking you can do shit and your girl is going to take that crap laying down and if she is taking it laying down, trust me its on someone else's stick. Cheating is cheating and there should be no double standards. It should be we both did wrong and let's work it out. So men the next time you think about cheating on your girl, her ass may already be giving up her kitty to someone else. Remember we are way smarter than you and we can do way more damage.

 When did you started writing? and what motivated you to write? To be honest my writing endeavors started with writing love letters to the young ladies in Junior High. They were awed because, most young men don't like or know how to communicate. It started to become serious while I was about 17 years old, and become full blown at 19 when I began the first draft of Love Don't Live Here. Growing up a 5 Percenter as a young man I was lucky enough to come in contact with some great older minds of brothers who were also members. They introduced me to many learned thinkers, writers, historians, etc. It is here that I became aware that there are many great writers, and I could become one myself. The icing on the cake is when I was introduced to some works of Walter Mosley. When I began researching who he was, and how his following/readers were of many races and ethnicity I made the decision that this is also what I desired to strive for. My experiences are the foundation for the way I see the world. As an artist I want to convey my thoughts to the world in a manner they can all understand. Who were some of you favorite writers? Walter Mosley, Langston Hughes, Richard Wright, James Baldwin, A.J. Rogers, Allison Walker, Toni Morrison, John Grisham, Manley P. Hall, Napoleon Hill, etc. There are so many other good writers works I've had the opportunity of enjoying. It would take a whole book to name them all, and the experiences. What was your first book? and what was it about? The name of my first book is Love Don't Live Here (revised edition). The story takes place during the 70's between Brooklyn, and Long Island, N.Y. It's about the lives of two black women who are in their early twenties. Both of them become single mothers through different circumstances. One, her boyfriend leaves here while she's six months pregnant. The others husband is a member of the Black Panther Party and winds up being killed. Through chance they both meet while at the supermarket. After speaking they realize they have a common goal, which is to raise their sons to become productive men in a society geared toward their demise. As women they don't know what their sons need. The book is fiction, but very realistic and historical.



 Any other books you wrote? Yes, my second book is No Love Lost- a story which takes place during the cocaine/crack era of the mid 80's into the early 90's within Long Island, N.Y. It's a story about the lives of two black teen males who break away from the middle class lifestyles their mothers strive to provide for them, and turn to the streets. The book is very graphic, realistic and true portrayal of the deadly lifestyle and the destruction it brings to both the individuals involved and the greater community. I co-wrote a book called Love.com which is no longer available from my venture. But is available on amazon.com through other sellers. It is a fun, funny title with a very subtle but serious message about not letting people or life get the best of you. The Secrets of Self Publishing 2 was just released. This is the follow up to the first edition which is my fourth title. My journey in self-publishing started almost a decade ago when most of the industry thought it was just a fad which wouldn't last. If you have watched all of Tupac Shakur's interviews over the last year before he was murdered, then I will say everything he stated about the music industry I will double and say it's also true about the literary world. Therefore the book is an opportunity for aspiring authors to get ahead start in learning the ground floor of the business. Survivor I Changed the Rules, is my autobiography. But it also mirrors the lives of those who were teens in the 80's-90's. It speaks about a generation, and also the power we as individuals have to overcome obstacles, regardless of what statistics or the media state. All You Need to Know to Become An Entrepreneur, isn't a very large book. Instead it is a straight to the point work detailing the ins and outs of entrepreneurship. The book starts right away with the different types of business structures and their pros and cons. I actually started writing as notes for myself, but as they work built I realized it would be a great book for others. There are more books coming right after this article prints, so stay in the know. What message you wanted to share in your books? The messages I share in my works are about enlightenment, and reality. overcoming and progression.

 How you feel about the young black males today and the direction they are heading? Young black males today like the generations before them are being victimized and manipulated by a system of organized chaos which seeks to alter and destroy their images and also identity. There is no profit for many to see them being educated, self aware and progressive. One thing I would like to speak about is the pants hanging off the waist. I understand this was started by some rappers. But to corporate America and some others this was a great opportunity to ensure it had become a part of urban culture. In prison culture it has always been a way for homosexual men to let others know they were available. In no way am I seeking to knock anyone's sexual preference. But I will say young people are being introduced to a lifestyle outside of men and women relationships when they haven't even figured out how to effectively deal with the opposite sex. I don't want to spend too much time on this because, there are so many other things to speak about. So I will move on to gang culture, and the break down and disappearance of rules and regulations. We understand that the streets have always been lawless in some manners, but today it's as if the Older Blind are leading the Younger Blind. So the reckless behavior is at all time high. Peddling, hustling, etc, is no longer a business or means to get out the ghetto. Instead it has become a lifestyle to accept and desire the worst. Any movies in the future? Yes, movies are definitely on the horizon. Everyone tells me No Love Lost should be a movie because, of how graphic, and real it is. I'm writing a few novels right now which will be good movies, and in budget ranges where I can do independently if necessary. My thoughts are projects straight to DVD.. How can we get your book? Right now all of my titles are available via amazon.com You can also go here to read free excerpts and order books www.amazon.com/author/theroneshellman I will begin touring again in August so visit the amazon author page in the future to keep update with my whereabouts and upcoming projects
