Background
NAICS Codes
As you might guess from the name, the NAICS system covers Canda, the United States and Mexico. Since it was first released in 1997 it has largely taken over from the older Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) which uses 4-digit codes and only covers the United States. NB: you will still see SIC codes used.

Each NAICS code is made up of a series of digits. XX---- Sector XXX--- Sub-sector XXXX-- Industry XXXXX_ Sub-industry XXXXXX National sub-industry This guide does not contain every NAICS code. We’ve cut the total down to make things a little more manageable, but we still cover about 600 codes.
How do I use it? If you are in the process of filling out an Action Plan, don’t worry about the codes so much as the finding the name of your sector and industry. That said, knowing your NAICS code will unlock troves of infomration, both online and in your public or school library as you do your research. Keep in mind, it’s not just about the numbers. Familiarizing yourself with the system is like taking a tour of the entire economy.
